The Santa Clara Historic Home Tour began in 1978 to showcase unique homes in the City and to benefit local nonprofits. A few years later the tour became a holiday event sponsored by the Historic Preservation Society of Santa Clara (HPSSC) with assistance from the Old Quad Residents’ Association (OQRA). Last year our efforts benefited the following community programs and sites: the Santa Clara Elks Lodge #2347 ENF Scholarship Fund, the Santa Clara Mission Branch Library Renovation Project & Historical Collection, the Santa Clara Central Park Library for the Heritage Pavilion, the South Bay Historic Railroad Society, the Saint Claire Hook & Ladder Historical Society, the Santa Clara Woman’s Club Adobe Restoration Project, the Bill Wilson Center-Quetzal House Upgrades, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps and the Santa Clara Parade of Champions.

The tour demonstrates how vintage buildings have been restored to create delightful structures. Sharing these city jewels helps demonstrate the value of keeping historic neighborhoods intact. This tour has become a Santa Clara tradition. A special thank you to the dozens of volunteers who work long hours throughout the year to bring this event to our community. We appreciate City Historian Lorie Garcia’s beautifully written and thorough home histories and descriptions. ROBERTO ADOBE & SUÑOL HOUSE MUSEUM

About the museum.

The Roberto Adobe & Suñol House are among the oldest and most historically significant homes in Santa Clara County. The adobe was built by Native American Roberto Balermino c1836. In 1847, Antonio Suñol built the brick Suñol House adjoining the adobe. Suñol owned San José’s first store; he was the alcalde (mayor), sindico (city attorney), sub-prefect (assistant governor), and the first postmaster of San José. The non-profit California Pioneers of Santa Clara County acquired this property to create a free museum for the benefit of the public. It is located at 770 Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen, San José, California. The adobe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic Roberto Adobe & Suñol House

San José has only two extant adobes, one of which is the Roberto-Suñol Adobe, located at 770 Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen, San José, California. On May 31, 2013, the owners – siblings John Bruzzone Jr., Jeanette Bruzzone, and Joyce Lo Franco — donated the adobe, as well as the two-story historic landmark Suñol House and grounds to the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County. The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County created a museum for the benefit of the public. The adobe is included in the National Register of Historic Places.

“This is a unique opportunity for our community to enjoy a museum that will showcase the five major eras of our valley’s history, with each period being represented in a very tangible way at the site,” said Superior Court Judge Paul Bernal, who is also the Official Historian of San José and the president of the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County. “The story will span the Native American era, the Spanish era, the Mexican era, the Early American era, and the modern era. We specifically tell the story of how the residents of the homes influenced local history, and how local history affected the occupants. There are fun interactive learning games for children in every room of the museum. The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County is thrilled to have received this gift from the Bruzzone family, and we are humbled to be the next stewards of this outstanding historic resource. This is a monumental donation not only to the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County but also to the community.”

For thousands of years, the indigenous people known as the Tamien lived in what was later called Willow Glen.

In 1775-1776 Spaniard Lt. Col. Juan Bautista de Anza led a settlement expedition that resulted in the founding of Pueblo San José de Guadalupe. San José was the first civil settlement in California, and would later be California’s first state Capital. Mission Santa Clara was founded in 1777, and what became Willow Glen was part of the mission lands, used for grazing 10,000 sheep and raising pigs.

A Native American named Roberto Balermino was born c1782 and grew up on this part of the valley in a rancheria called San Juan Bautista, where the Guadalupe and Los Gatos Rivers came together in Willow Glen. His adult occupation was that of a cook, probably serving food to the army of Indian shepherds at this site. Around 1836, Roberto Balermino built the Roberto Adobe, which still stands today. He petitioned the Mexican governor for a land grant called Rancho de los Coches (Ranch of the Pigs). He was granted the 2,219 acres in 1844.

By 1844, Spaniard Antonio Maria Suñol was living upon Rancho los Coches with his wife Maria Dolores Bernal and their children. Suñol was among the most educated citizens of San José, having been schooled in France. In 1847, Suñol acquired Rancho los Coches, and built a brick house adjoining the Roberto Adobe. It was the first brick house to be completed in Alta California. At this residence, which still exists on the historic site, Suñol entertained members of the first California Legislature.

In 1853, a Dalmation sea captain named Stefano Splivalo purchased the Suñol home, and the surrounding ranch. Splivalo added a second story and encased the brick walls in wood siding. In the 1870s he added three eastern rooms. This is how the home looks today.

In 1906, Italian immigrant Julio Bassoni acquired the houses and four acres. He and his descendants maintained a typical Willow Glen orchard here until 1966.

The Bruzzone family founded the Pied Piper Exterminator Company in 1934 and settled on Willow Street, in San José. John Bruzzone Sr., inherited the business. He owned the land behind the adobe site. In 1973, Bruzzone first laid eyes on the adobe and Splivalo’s home, which carried the name “Laura Ville.” When Bruzzone learned how unique the buildings were, he spent much time and money restoring them to their earlier glory. He hired adobe expert Gilbert Sanchez, an architect, and contractor, to re-enforce and rebuild the Roberto-Suñol Adobe and the Suñol-Splivalo House. They lifted the second story off the first story, used concrete and steel to strengthen the building, and placed the second story back down on the first story. It took three years and $300,000. The buildings were reopened in 1977. Laura Ville was rented as law offices until 2012.

On May 31, 2013, the three children of the late Julia and John Bruzzone Sr., sought a reliable historic organization to take possession of the property. Their wish was in line with John Bruzzone Sr.’s love of local history. They chose the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County.

The California Pioneers of Santa Clara County was created in 1875 in San José, California, with the purpose of celebrating those pioneers who came before us. It was founded with about 450 members. Today, the organization is proud to still have about 450 members.

Private home tours, most often organized by heritage, community and charity groups as fund-raisers, give those of us in the public the chance to see the inside of unique, charming, historic and impressive dwellings as inspiration and aspiration. Those on the tour can also get to know a community and satisfy their curiosity.

Springtime is popular for such tours in Southern California. We have made a list of those that have scheduled dates for 2019, as well as information on two design showcase homes that feature the work of local interior designers. Some of the tours sell out, so be sure to check on availability early if interested. All tours will be held rain or shine unless otherwise noted.

Historic Homes & Gorgeous Gardens Spring Home Tour in Pasadena

The Pasadena Heritage preservation group offers a tour featuring houses that emphasize indoor-outdoor living. From the homes’ curb appeal to their private interiors, tour-goers experience how various styles of architecture and landscape influence each other. Past tours have included homes in nearby Sierra Madre and Altadena as well as Pasadena.

The eclectic collection of homes in this north Santa Ana community is on display at the annual event presented by the Floral Park Neighborhood Association. A few of the original farmhouses remain in the neighborhood that dates back to the 1920s, and the range of architectural styles also include Beverly Hills bungalow, Mediterranean villa, English Tudor, Cape Cod, California ranch, storybook and art deco. More than 200 homes and gardens in Floral Park have been part of the annual event, now in its 27th year. A classic vehicle show and an antiques and collectibles sale are also part of the festivities.

La Cañada Spring Home Tour

9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3:30-6 p.m. (tour); 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. (marketplace)

Tickets: $45 presale, $50 day of event.

Four local homes, all selected and showcased for their architectural interest and inspirational design, make up this year’s 33rd annual tour. The well-known community event is the chief fundraiser for the La Canada High School PTA, providing funding for programs and supplies to the school’s seventh-through 12th-grade students. An all-day marketplace features boutique vendors and dining options, and an after-party ($35-$40) caps off the day.

Tustin Area Historical Society’s Annual Home and Garden Tour

The theme for the 23rd annual event is “Walkin’ and Rockin’ Thru Old Town Tustin.” Tour takers will see vintage homes that have been updated while maintaining their original charm. Each home has a unique story, interesting décor and objects of particular interest collected by their owners. The day’s events also include a horse-drawn trolley, vintage vehicle displays and Old Town history walking tour, as well as live music and craft vendors. The historical society uses the money raised to support the Tustin Area Museum as well as an education program and other historical activities. The tour begins at the Tustin Presbyterian Church, 225 W. Main St.

Newport Harbor Home and Garden Tour

The highly anticipated tour, celebrating its 22nd year, includes seven homes in the Newport Harbor area that feature inspiring architecture, design and landscaping elements that incorporate the beautiful surroundings. Local interior designers’ work is highlighted. The event also includes a luncheon and specialty boutique. Presented by the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation, the tour’s proceeds benefit academic support programs in the area.

Now in its 55th year, the 2019 Pasadena Showcase House of Design is returning to the Boddy House at Descanso Gardens for the first time in 12 years. This year’s showcase features the work of 22 local interior design firms as well as four exterior design firms for the surrounding gardens.

The design house is the annual fundraiser for the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, which funds music programs and education and furthers the work of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

About 25,000 guests visit the design house event annually, and the event is one of the oldest and most successful house and garden tours in the country, according to organizers.

Parking is not allowed at the house, only rideshare/pickup and drop-off. The address is 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge. Free parking and a shuttle to the house is available at 1919 Verdugo Blvd., Glendale.

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County hosts its 26th design house, a 7,200-square-foot Hamptons-style home atop a bluff with sweeping ocean views.

Local interior designers transform the home’s rooms into inspirational spaces full of details and ideas for tour takers. An on-site cafe and boutique are also offered.

The society’s House of Design annual fundraiser benefits its nationally recognized Youth Music Education programs. With an emphasis on luxury and high design, previous design houses have been in exclusive communities like the Strand at Headlands in Dana Point, Shady Canyon, Ritz Cove, Coto de Caza and Crystal Cove.

Free parking and shuttle service for this year’s house is available at Strand Vista Park, 34111 Selva Road, Dana Point.
