A breakout moment for virtual care

Kaiser Permanente’s fully integrated telehealth capabilities place quality and safety at the center of each visit.

Kaiser Permanente conducts more than 40,000 video visits on average each weekday.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaiser Permanente’s telehealth capabilities have made it easy for our members to stay home and receive quality primary and specialty care. Members can schedule a video or phone visit with their clinician, or securely email their doctor with questions about their ongoing care needs. They can complete online physical therapy programs, chat online with a clinician in many areas, or complete an e-visit to receive a fully personalized online care plan.   

These robust telehealth capabilities have allowed Kaiser Permanente to continue to deliver time-sensitive care virtually. More than 80% of our appointments were conducted by phone or video during April 2020 compared to 15% prior to the pandemic, and video visits continue to set new records with more than 40,000 visits on average each weekday. Even better, as we’ve expanded, our telehealth options have received 5-star reviews from our members:

• “Honestly, a wonderful experience. This was my FIRST video visit and I am really impressed.”

Virtual first

As Kaiser Permanente gradually welcomes patients back to our facilities, telehealth continues to enable members to get great care from home if they wish. Virtual care is not only convenient and efficient, it helps protect members, patients, doctors, nurses, and staff. It reinforces social distancing protocols and helps save critical personal protective equipment for those who need it most.

As virtual care accelerates across the health care industry, some providers may be using third-party vendors or launching new apps. In contrast, Kaiser Permanente members are benefiting from decades of active investment and innovation not only in technology but in the telehealth experience — research indicates that 89% of members who complete a visit are interested in another — and in the safety, quality, and effectiveness of care we deliver virtually.

Delivering the full care experience

Kaiser Permanente’s telehealth services are fully integrated into Kaiser Permanente’s electronic health record. During telehealth appointments, Kaiser Permanente clinicians have immediate and secure access to a complete picture of the patient and can prescribe medications, order lab tests and imaging, or put in a referral to connect the patient directly with other needed care.

For members, this enables a consistent patient experience and coordinated care during and after the visit. The result is high-quality, evidence-based care that is centered around each member, based on what he or she needs.

Integration is also key to Kaiser Permanente’s remote monitoring capabilities, including glucose monitoring for diabetes, blood pressure monitoring for high blood pressure, and virtual cardiac monitoring through wearable devices for patients who are recovering from heart attacks. Data from remote monitoring is sent directly into the electronic health record where it is immediately available to clinicians, playing a critical role in chronic disease management and recovery for at-risk patients.

Get care where and when it’s most convenient for you

Why go out of your way for quality care when you can have a video visit anytime, anywhere? A video visit 1 is a virtual chat you can have with your primary care physician from any remote location, using your smartphone, tablet, or other camera-equipped device.

When you’re dealing with a cold, the flu, or physical pains, the last thing you want to do is leave the comfort of your home to make a trip to the doctor. With video visits, your doctor can come to you instead.

Video visits are available for many conditions, including:

• Cough, cold, sore throat, allergies, and sinus conditions
• Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
• Aches and pains
• Minor injuries
• Skin conditions
• Urinary issues
• Sleep or mood problems

Video visits are also great for getting quick, easy advice from your physician regarding previous conditions that have not improved, chronic and mental health conditions, and the proper use of medication for various conditions.

Because your primary care physician can access your health information via your electronic medical record, your care is always seamless, convenient, and connected. You get the same quality care from a video visit that you would when visiting your personal physician in their office.

Making the most of video visits You can schedule video visits online at kp.org or by using the Kaiser Permanente (KP) app. If you are unsure whether your symptoms qualify for a video visit, call the Kaiser Permanente appointment line at 800-777-7904 (TTY 711 ), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To schedule a video visit, you must be registered on kp.org and have either a computer with a webcam, 2 or a smartphone or tablet with the KP app downloaded. To join your scheduled video visit, 3 log in to the KP app on your mobile device, or log in to kp.org on your computer, then navigate to the Appointment Center and click “Join Appointment.”

1 Video visits are available to Kaiser Permanente members who have a camera-equipped computer or mobile device and are registered at kp.org. You must be present in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC, for visits with your primary care physician or mental health provider. For urgent video visits with an emergency doctor, you may also be present in West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, or Pennsylvania. Video visits are for certain medical or mental health conditions. For video visits with a mental health provider, appointments can be scheduled for follow-up care. 2 Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox are not compatible browsers. 3 If you are under 18, please have a parent or legal guardian present by video or by phone at the scheduled time to provide verbal consent.

Save time and money with telehealth

Get the care you need with no drive, no wait, and no copay  (for most plans) . With Kaiser Permanente’s many telehealth options, you can visit the doctor without the visit. Your care team will even have access to your medical records to personalize your care.

Same-day telephone & video visits 1

Now you can get same-day or next-day adult care—by phone or video appointment. Get care quickly for certain minor symptoms such as sore throat; cold, cough, or allergy symptoms; nausea; or bladder infection. Your Kaiser Permanente doctor will be able to view your medical record, prescribe medicine, order lab tests and X-rays, and make future appointments, if needed. Appointments are available Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is also available on holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

There’s no copay for most plans except HSA-qualified high deductible health plans (HDHPs).

Specialty telephone & video visits 1

Get care from wherever you are with telephone or video appointments for specialties including Behavioral Health, Dermatology, Ear/Nose/Throat, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology/Sleep Medicine, Ob/Gyn, Oncology, Pain Management, Urology and more. These visits can be conducted right from your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Ask your doctor if a video visit is right for you.

Send an email to your doctor’s office for answers to non-urgent health questions or email a pharmacist. Just sign on to kp.org, or register if you haven’t already.

Fill out an online questionnaire, and based on your responses, you’ll be shown self-care advice or recommendations for the best way to get the care you need. You can even get a prescription written and sent to the pharmacy. It’s great for certain common symptoms like fever, coughing, stuffy nose, and pain when urinating. From a computer, log on to kp.org; go to the ‘Appointment center’ and view ‘Upcoming appointments’; then click ‘Join appointment.’ 2

From your smartphone or tablet, log in to the Kaiser Permanente app; go to ‘Appointments’ and select the ‘Upcoming’ tab; select your visit; then click ‘Join now’ in the ‘Appointment details’ window. 2

1 For members  who are registered on kp.org and have seen their doctor in the past year. For phone and video visits, due to IRS rules, if you have a HSA-qualified high deductible health plan (HDHP), you’ll pay the full cost for scheduled phone and video visits until you reach your deductible. Once you reach your deductible, your copay will be $0.
