A Mediterranean city and naval station located in the Region of Murcia, southeastern Spain, Cartagena’s sheltered bay has attracted sailors for centuries. The Carthaginians founded the city in 223BC and named it Cartago Nova; it later became a prosperous Roman colony, and a Byzantine trading centre. The city has been the main Spanish Mediterranean naval base since the reign of King Philip II, and is still surrounded by walls built during this period. Cartagena’s importance grew with the arrival of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century, when the Navidad Fortress was constructed to protect the harbour. In recent years, traces of the city’s fascinating past have been brought to light: a well-preserved Roman Theatre was discovered in 1988, and this has now been restored and opened to the public. During your free time, you may like to take a mini-cruise around Cartagena's historic harbour: these operate several times a day, take approximately 40 minutes and do not need to be booked in advance. Full details will be available at the port.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has some of the largest ships at sea. The company sails around the globe, offering itineraries for all interests and a handful of world cruises that can last several months.

Similar to airline and hotel brands, cruise lines also have loyalty programs, and Royal Caribbean is no exception. Its Crown and Anchor Society rewards repeat cruisers interested in maximizing their onboard perks. Here’s what you need to know about the loyalty program and why “It pays to be loyal to Royal" as the cruise line says.

How do you earn points for Royal Caribbean’s Crown and Anchor Society?

After completing your first cruise, you will earn points every time you sail with Royal Caribbean, accruing one point for each night you’re on board. You'll earn double points per night if you stay in a suite. The more points you earn, the higher your elite status.

Note that elite status earning requirements are based on lifetime point accrual — not a calendar year like most other loyalty programs.

Don't worry if you forget to sign up; taking your first cruise automatically enrolls you in the program. However, you will need to create a Crown and Anchor login to view your online account, which will help you keep track of the points you earn.

Can you earn points with a Royal Caribbean credit card?

Even though Royal Caribbean has its own co-branded credit card , you can’t use it to help you reach Crown and Anchor elite status. Instead, the points you earn by spending with the card can be used to enhance your cruise experience.

You can redeem points for onboard credits, cruise discounts, room upgrades and companion fares. The only way to earn points toward Crown and Anchor elite status is by sailing on a cruise.

Crown and Anchor Society elite status levels

There are six elite status levels in the Crown and Anchor loyalty program. As an added benefit for those who cruise with their family, children younger than 18 automatically hold the same status as their parents (with the exception of the Pinnacle Club tier).

Here’s what you can expect to receive at each tier of the Crown and Anchor Society.

Gold is the first elite status tier, which you'll reach after earning 3 points. As a Gold member, you receive:

A newsletter with advance notice of new ships, itineraries and special deals.

Exclusive rates on some sailings and itineraries.

Access to a private lounge with continental breakfast before departure.

One additional cruise point for each night when paying a single rate in a double occupancy stateroom.

Discounts on Wi-Fi, spa, food and beverage options.

Platinum is the next elite status, which members reach after accruing 30 points as a member. In addition to all of the Gold perks, as a Platinum member, you’ll receive:

Exclusive rates on balcony and suite staterooms.

Reciprocal status with Celebrity Cruises Captain’s Club.

A special onboard event on sailings five nights or longer.

Robes in the cabin.

Laundry discounts.

» Learn more: Tips for getting the best deal on your next cruise

Once you reach 55 points, you move to the Emerald tier, which provides all the perks of Gold and Platinum plus these additional things:

Welcome water in your stateroom (two bottles per adult).

Lapel pin to recognize your Emerald status.

Now you’re starting to crack the code on special perks with Royal Caribbean. Once you earn 80 points, you reach the Diamond level and receive the benefits of all the lower status tiers plus these extras:

Chef’s choice welcome gift on sailings five nights or longer.

Four complimentary drinks per day.

Priority waitlist for shore excursions and spa appointments.

Access to the Crown or Silver lounge with complimentary snacks and nightly happy hour.

Priority waitlist for preferred seats in the main dining room.

Four daily complimentary nonalcoholic drinks for kids.

One day of free Wi-Fi.

Plus, a commemorative crystal block is awarded when you accrue 140 points and again for every 70 points afterward.

Diamond Plus

The Diamond Plus level is for serious cruisers since it kicks in once you’ve earned 175 points. It comes with all the perks of the lower tiers as well as these benefits:

Dedicated call center for reservations.

Choice of a special in-room amenity, such as wine, strawberries or cheese plate.

Five complimentary drinks per day.

Deluxe beverage package discounts.

Priority seating at entertainment venues (theater, Ice show and AquaTheater).

Two days of free Wi-Fi.

One free laundry service on sailings five nights or longer.

Complimentary add-on spa treatment.

Five daily complimentary nonalcoholic drinks for kids.

Although still in the same elite tier, for members who have earned at least 340 points, there are even more benefits:

Lunch and wine with an officer on sailings seven nights or longer.

Upgraded bathroom toiletries.

Reduced single supplement cruise fare.

» Learn more: How to plan a cruise in 6 steps

Pinnacle Club

Once you accrue 700 points, you’re awarded Pinnacle Club status. This is the highest tier you can earn, and it includes all of the benefits of the lower tiers plus:

Specialty dining discounts, exclusive daily breakfast and access to a private restaurant.

Free Wi-Fi for one device for the entire sailing.

Six complimentary drinks per day.

Personalized lapel pin.

Complimentary cruise.

Another complimentary cruise for each additional 350 cruise points earned.

Six daily complimentary nonalcoholic drinks for kids.

The free cruises are a great bonus, and the first two cruises earned (at 700 and 1,050 points) are eligible for a balcony stateroom on a seven-night Caribbean sailing. You can also choose to redeem a $2,400 credit toward another cruise. The cruise must be taken within one year of earning it, and the ship must have been sailing for at least one year.

Any additional complimentary cruises earned can be redeemed for a junior suite stateroom on a seven-night Caribbean sailing or as a voucher for $3,200 on any other sailing. They’re not valid during the holidays or peak summer months, and the member has to pay taxes, fees and port surcharges.

Are there any Crown and Anchor partner benefits?

There are several partner perks that Crown and Anchor Society members can take advantage of when they’re not sailing. Here’s what you can expect:

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

Go immediately to the car without stopping by the counter at certain locations.

Choose cars from the Gold Plus area at select locations.

MGM Rewards

MGM elite tier status match.

Celebrity Cruises

Elite tier status match (for Crown and Anchor Platinum level and higher).

Is it worth joining the Crown and Anchor Society?

When sailing with Royal Caribbean, it is worth joining the loyalty program — after all, you’re automatically enrolled after your first cruise. Once you reach elite status, you’ll enjoy plenty of perks, which increase the more you sail.

After reaching Platinum level, you’ll enjoy elite status perks on Celebrity cruises. While you can’t spend your way to elite status with the Royal Caribbean credit card, using it can provide discounts on your next cruise. And any time you sail, you can get closer to the next tier of the Crown and Anchor Society program.

Autumn is one of the best times to visit New England, with comfortable temperatures, crisp air and colorful fall foliage. Most New England cruises start, stop or finish in Canada, so make sure you have both Canadian and U.S. currency on hand. Depending on the season during your New England cruise, you'll need different clothes and footwear. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes as many New England ports are best experienced on foot. Packing layers is a good idea when visiting the region too. In the summer months, the weather can cool down at night so it's always best to have a sweater or light jacket on hand!

Some 31.7 million passengers sailed on cruises worldwide in 2023 - almost two million more than in prepandemic 2019, according to a report by the Cruise Lines International Association, and cruise ships are expecting to reach 35.7 million passengers in 2024. The industry pumped $138 billion into the global economy in 2022.

About half of cruisers are baby boomers and Generation X, (age 59 and over) and 84% of both groups plan to cruise again, CLIA says.

The appeal of a cruise lies in its all-inclusive floating hotel/restaurant concept - once you're on it, it takes you from place to place without any need to pack and unpack. Boarding those big cruise ships the first day can be an all-day affair-and you don't want to miss your ship, so many people fly in a day early and stay in a hotel near the port. That adds time and expense to the trip.

So if you cruise a lot, or plan to in retirement, being within driving distance of a major port can open up the world to you.

There are cruise ports all over the coastal U.S., including New York, New Jersey, Alaska, Seattle and Oregon. (Cruise ships will no longer start their journeys from Charleston, S.C., by the end of 2024, the South Carolina Ports Authority said.) Most of the busiest cruise ports in the U.S. are in warmer climates in Florida, Texas, Louisiana and California. Here are some places to retire less than three hours drive of some of those biggest cruise ports.

Florida: Close to the three largest cruise ports in the U.S.

There are three major cruise ports in the Fort Lauderdale-Miami area: Port Canaveral, PortMiami, and Port Everglades, and they happen to be the three busiest in the nation.

Florida's favorable tax structure makes the state popular among retirees, with no state income tax and no tax on Social Security benefits, pensions, IRAs 401(k)s or other retirement income.

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades is a port of call and departure point for most major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean (RCL), Disney (DIS), Holland America, Princess, Celebrity and Viking Ocean Cruises. It's north of Miami and is known as an embarkation port for cruises to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Cuba, Caribbean and the Panama Canal, as well as repositioning cruises where travelers can often score bargains when a ship is moving to another port for the season.

Fort Lauderdale was chosen as one of Livability's 100 best places to live in 2023, thanks to its blend of leisure and luxury, golden beaches, year-round sunshine, easy access to water sports, vibrant arts and entertainment district and diverse economy.

It was also No. 3 on WalletHub's 2023 list of best places to retire, which considers activities, cost of living, healthcare and quality of life.

It's just over an hour's drive to PortMiami, another major cruise port and three hours from Port Canaveral.

Fort Lauderdale:

Pop.: 183,146 (Miami -Ft. Lauderdale metro area is over six million)Median home sale price: $573,000 (Redfin RDFN, Feb. 2024)Rent, 2BR average: $1,413 / moCost of living: 10.5% higher than the U.S. averageClimate risks: Heat risk is highest: 95/100 (where 100 is worst) according to ClimateCheck.com.

Boca Raton, Fla.

A longtime favorite and traditional retirement community for New Yorkers, Boca was ranked the No. 3 place to retire by Livability in 2016, citing its slower pace of life than its busier Miami and Fort Lauderdale neighbors just to the south. It's popularity as a retirement spot is evidenced by its high percentage of residents over age 65 (21%).

Boca Raton was WalletHub's No. 3 best place to retire in Florida in 2021, ranking in the top four for both healthcare and activities, it was also ranked as a top destination for snowbirds in 2021. It's about an hour's drive to PortMiami, and even closer to Fort Lauderdale's port.

This upscale community offers a serene environment with luxury amenities, golf courses, and beautiful parks.

Outdoors lovers will enjoy Boca's beautiful beaches and parks, including Red Reef Park, which has a nature center with trails, a butterfly garden and a sea turtle sanctuary. There are numerous golf courses in the area too.

Boca Raton:

Delray Beach, Fla.

Just north of Boca Raton is the smaller city of Delray Beach, Fla., where homes are much cheaper. Delray is also on the ocean, it has lakes and golf courses, and there's plenty to do, from wine tastings, festivals and cultural experiences to golf and other sports. Stroll along the boardwalk and look at the wildlife in Wakodahatchee Wetlands, where you can see birds, turtles and alligators. There is an arts district with public art and galleries, too. Delray Beach is a little over an hour's drive to PortMiami, and even closer to Fort Lauderdale's port.

Delray Beach, Fla.:

Close to the Port of New Orleans

The Port of New Orleans is the country's seventh largest cruise port with cruises to Mexico and the Caribbean on major cruise lines including Carnival, Norwegian (NCLH) and Royal Caribbean. But it is also a launching point for river cruises up the Mississippi.

Baton Rouge, La.

Baton Rouge is about a 90 minute drive from New Orleans. Louisiana's capital city provides a blend of southern charm, cultural attractions, and outdoor activities. It's one of the cheapest places on this list, with cost of living and median home prices below the U.S. average. It ranked No. 74 on WalletHub's 2023 ranking of 189 places to retire. Home to Louisiana State University, the city is packed with football fans during the fall and there's a lively nightlife scene too.

Baton Rouge:

Pop.: 221,453Median home sale price: $220,000 (Redfin, Feb. 2024)Rent, 2BR average: $970/mo.Cost of living: 6.8% lower than the U.S. averageClimate risks: Heat is the highest risk here, (98/100) followed by precipitation (67/100) (where 100 is worst.)

Covington, La.

Located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, Covington is a charming town with scenic parks and a historic downtown known for its art galleries and small public areas called ox lots, where vendors once sold their wares from wagons and oxcarts. It's less than an hour's drive across Lake Pontchartrain - on the world's longest continuous bridge over water - to get to the New Orleans port. Southern Living recently named it a best small town in Louisiana.

Pop.: around 12,000Median home sale price: $281,500 (Redfin, Feb. 2024)Rent, 2BR average: $1,065 /moCost of living: 1.6% lower than the U.S. averageClimate risks: Heat (95/100) and storms (67/100) are the greatest risks (where 100 is worst.)

Close the Port of Galveston, Texas

Houston itself ranks middling on WalletHub and US News & World Report's retirement lists- No. 118 and 119 respectively. While the big bustling city has low home prices well below the country's average, according to ClimateCheck, flooding is a risk here: of 1,675 census tracts in Houston, there are 1,567 where more than half of buildings have significant risk of flooding, as evidenced by 2017's hurricane Harvey.

The Woodlands, Texas

But north of the city, The Woodlands, a master-planned community built around the old town square, is 1.5 hours' drive to the port and flood risks are minimal. The Woodlands is still close to all the amenities of Houston: such as professional sports, museums and shopping.

The Woodlands has 151 parks and 220 miles of hike and bike trails, and is also known for its golf, corporate headquarters, schools, places of worship, shopping, dining, hospitality and healthcare.

The Woodlands, Texas:

Pop.: 118,402Median home sale price: $537,500 (Redfin, Feb. 2024)Rent, 2BR average: $1,525/mo.Cost of living: right around the U.S. averageClimate risks: Heat risk is high here, 98/100 (where 100 is worst.)

Close to ports in Southern California

Over on the West coast, the biggest cruise ports are located in San Diego and the Los Angeles area. Cruises from these ports on major cruise lines take you to places like Mexico's Baja peninsula, Hawaii, the Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, Pacific coast, South America and Alaska. You can even take a cruise around the world out of Los Angeles.

If money is no object, there are plenty of lovely oceanside places to retire in San Diego, such as upscale La Jolla or charming Coronado. Median home prices in San Diego and L.A. are above $900,000, and cost of living is well above the U.S. average. But a little farther inland is the Coachella Valley.

Palm Springs, Calif.

Once a popular destination for stars, with streets named after Gene Autry, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore and more, Palm Springs is less than 2.5 hours to the ports in San Diego, Los Angeles and Long Beach. It's one of California's longtime favorite retirement communities, drawing active adults from all over the world with its beautiful landscapes, interesting architecture, rich culture, fine restaurants, diverse communities, and outstanding attractions, according to TopRetirements.

The city of Palm Springs can be pricey, but real-estate experts recommended the Coachella Valley, which includes Palm Springs, as a best place to retire in Travel & Leisure last year. There’s an international airport, many types of housing in a range of prices, excellent healthcare, plenty of great shopping, museums and lots of outdoor activities, including golf, tennis and hiking, with Joshua Tree National Park nearby. Summers can be extremely hot in the desert, so the population fluctuates somewhat.

  • Pop.: about 45,000. The Coachella Valley is about 370,000.

  • Cost of living: 31.2% higher than the U.S. average
