ITCM flight-tested, India achieves success in indigenous cruise systems

Indigenous technology cruise missile being test fired from ITR off Odisha coast on Thursday

BHUBANESWAR: In yet another milestone in cruise technology, India successfully flight-tested Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM) from a defence facility off the Odisha coast on Thursday.

Designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile with turbofan engine Manik was test-fired from launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR). The test demonstrated the reliable performance of the indigenous propulsion system developed by Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), Bengaluru. Along with the propulsion system, all subsystems were validated during the developmental trial.

ITCM is a technology demonstrator programme, launched to validate the capability of Made in India small turbofan engine, upgraded radio frequency seekers and other subsystems developed for the indigenous cruise missile. Equipped with the new turbofan engine, defence sources said, the missile was tested in full operational configuration. The propulsion system performed very well and the missile reached the desired cruise altitude as expected. The flight of the missile was monitored from the Sukhoi-30-Mk-I aircraft of the Indian Air Force.

“The missile followed the desired path using waypoint navigation and demonstrated very low altitude sea-skimming flight. The performance was monitored by several range sensors like radar, electro-optical tracking system and telemetry deployed by ITR at different locations to ensure complete coverage of the flight path,” sources said.

It achieved a second consecutive success after a failed attempt on October 28, 2022, as the system developed a snag in the engine after separation of the booster stage. Fitted with an upgraded radio frequency seeker and Manik engine, the missile was test-fired successfully on February 21, 2023. Based on the subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay, the ITCM is also equipped with advanced avionics and software to ensure better and more reliable performance. The missile has been developed by Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a lab of DRDO, along with contributions from other laboratories and Indian industries.

The DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment developed the missile featuring advanced avionics and software.

The test established the reliable performance of the missile’s indigenous propulsion system, developed by Gas Turbine Research Establishment, the defense ministry said.

The twin-spool generic turbofan engine has a thrust of 460 kilograms (1,014 pounds).

Precursor of Long-Range Cruise Missiles

The missile is based on the Nirbhay long-range subsonic cruise missile, which features a Russian NPO Saturn 36MT engine.

It is the springboard of India’s long-range land attack cruise missiles being developed for land and sea, which are expected to have ranges of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) and 1,500 kilometers (932 miles).

India Accelerates Cruise Missiles Production through Public-Private Partnership after Successful ITCM Test

Source : IgMp Bureau

India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is spearheading a collaborative effort between public and private sector enterprises to bolster the manufacturing of sub-sonic, long-range cruise missiles. This initiative comes in the wake of the successful testing of the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM), marking a significant leap forward in India's missile capabilities.

Indian Military strategists acknowledge the imperative of amassing a substantial arsenal of precision-strike conventional missiles, estimated to number in the thousands. This strategic build-up aims to effectively counter emerging threats along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LOC).

The genesis of this program lies in the triumph of India's maiden indigenous cruise missile, the Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM), derived from the earlier Nirbhay Long Range Subsonic Cruise Missile project. Following a series of successful developmental trials, the ITCM is now primed for mass production, signaling a pivotal moment in India's missile development journey.

This collaborative endeavor transcends mere component manufacturing. The MoD envisions both public and private entities engaging in the complete assembly process, fostering a symbiotic partnership aimed at enhancing India's missile manufacturing capabilities.

While currently deployed from mobile launchers, efforts are underway to adapt the cruise missile for deployment from sea and air platforms. This strategic adaptation promises to augment the missile's operational versatility, allowing for enhanced deployment options across varied terrains and scenarios.

Central to India's quest for self-sufficiency in cruise missile technology is the indigenously developed Manik engine. Conceived by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) and slated for production by Godrej, the Manik engine represents a significant milestone in India's indigenous missile propulsion capabilities. Its successful development sets the stage for broader public-private collaboration in India's burgeoning missile production landscape.

India's concerted efforts to ramp up cruise missile production through a strategic public-private partnership underscore its commitment to bolstering national security and advancing indigenous technological capabilities. By leveraging the synergies between public and private entities, India aims to cement its position as a formidable force in the realm of missile technology.

What is a Cruise Missile?

  • It is a guided missile used against terrestrial or naval targets, that remains in the atmosphere (unlike ballistic missiles) and flies the major portion of its flight path at an approximately constant speed, before hitting the target.
  • Precision: High, up to a few metres — fit for small, moving targets.
  • Subsonic Cruise missiles: These cruise missiles travel at less than Mach 1.
  • Supersonic Cruise missiles: Cruise missiles travelling at supersonic speeds are called supersonic cruise missiles.
  • Hypersonic Cruise missiles: Cruise missiles powered using scramjet engines to realise speeds greater than Mach 5 are designated as hypersonic cruise missiles.

Q1: What is Avionics?

It is a category of electronic systems and equipment specifically designed for use in aviation.
