Clutch at the Fillmore in Detroit

by Chuck Marshall | Jan 2, 2022 | Music

Clutch invites us to celebrate 30 years of Rock and Roll with them at the Fillmore in Detroit with guests Nate Bergman and Stöner.

Clutch @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

Rocking for 30 years with Clutch

I’m not sure why it feels amazing to think that the guys in Clutch (Tim, Neil, Jean Paul, and Dan) have been rocking together for 30 years. I’ve got friends I’ve known for over 40 years. I suppose the key is that I’m not working and traveling with my friends for a good portion of each year. Clearly, the members of Clutch have a deep love for each other, their music, and their fans which have kept them bonded for all this time.

I remember first seeing Clutch on Headbanger’s Ball playing the video for “A Shogun Named Marcus”. The burly jams struck a chord. From the first sweaty pit in Royal Oak, the intimacy of The Machine Shop in Flint, t he old Orbit Room in Grand Rapids , to here at The Fillmore in Detroit , myself and my buddy Jeff have loved experiencing the pure rock fury of Clutch.

Clutch @ Orbit Room - Grand Rapids 15-Oct-2015

My very first concert photography gig was Clutch . I emailed them saying I had a ticket and would it be cool to photograph them. It was clear, I had no business being in the pit. I’d taken a few pictures with a point and shoot at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads festival and figured how hard could it be? Fuck around and found out. Thankfully Clutch has been cool enough to have me back a few times since.

Splurging on VIP

As a Christmas gift, I sprung for the VIP soundcheck with Clutch. Sadly, due to the pandemic, there isn’t a traditional meet and greet. However, I’m grateful we can at least see a show with a bit of safety knowing everyone is either vaccinated or tested negative. We arrived early to validate our vaccinations with the venue staff and mask up for the soundcheck.

Clutch treated us to three tunes that weren’t on tonight’s setlist including “Wicker”, “Willie Nelson”, and a new called “Slaughter Beach” from their forthcoming album which should be out sometime in 2022. It was a thrill to get a taste of being behind the scenes. It was also sort of odd not to be yelling my head off or feel the press of the crowd. After three tunes, Clutch thanked us for our support and we headed out. With some time to kill before the show, we made a break for some grub and a couple of pregame beers.

Nate Bergman

The VIP line allowed us to get in first and snag a sweet spot in the Fillmore to catch the show. Not long after doors, the house lights dimmed and the solo voice of Nate Bergman filled the air.

Nate Bergman @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

If you’ve seen the band Lionize , then you are already somewhat familiar with vocalist Nate Bergman. Nate received a last-minute call from Clutch to cover the opening slot. Native Howl had been slated to do this run with Clutch, but unfortunately had to drop out after a couple of shows.

Where Lionize plays rock, Nate is more soul with brushstrokes of Americana and blues. He kicked things off an acapella song, his voice high, clear, and emotive. Working with a Gibson acoustic and a Fender telecaster, Nate played music that brings to mind greats such as Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, and Steve Winwood.

Nate Bergman @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

Referring to the stack of Marshall’s behind him, Nate joked with the crowd that this bit of Newport Folk fest was nearly over. I’m sure some fans were anxiously awaiting Clutch, but I found Nate’s performance uplifting and very satisfying.

Palm Desert legends Brant Bjork (guitar) and Nick Oliveri (bass) have teamed up with Ryan Güt (drums) to form Stöner . Riding in on a woolly mammoth of fuzzy riffs and sonorous rhythms, it is time to enjoy some heavy grooves.

Stoner @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

Opening up with “Rad Stays Rad” sets the tone. Nick and Ryan slide into the pocket with a groove that you can feel. Brant’s easy vocals and warm guitar add to the feeling of cruising. Top down man, we aren’t hitchhiking anymore, we are riding.

Stoner @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

Nick takes on the vocal duties on the post-punk thrill ride called “Evel Never Dies”. The bite in his vocals adds to this tune’s brilliance. Stöner ended their set with the epic and super doom-licious “Tribe / Fly Girl”. This psychedelic sabbath caps off a sweet set. Stöner rules!

Under blood red lights, Jean Paul rolls on the snare and we are bouncing to “Passive Restraints”. This got the pit roiling just a few feet from the stage. Security was great and let folks release some steam, but kept the crowd surfing to a minimum. After talking with a security guard pre-show, I don’t envy having to handle a bunch of bodies flying over the barricades.

Clutch @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

Clutch continued on with the first side of the Passive Restraints EP with “Impetus”. While everyone in the band sounds tight, I have to call out Jean Paul and Dan. The drums and bass are hearty shots of rock steady groove played with a belly full of fire. The electric shock of live music runs up my spine as Neil barks “I will not relent! I will not relent!, I will not relent! I AM DRIVEN!”

Clutch @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

The beers are flying and the pit keeps busy with “Power Player”, “A Quick Death in Texas”, “Rats”, and “Pury Rock Fury”. I took a look over to my right where Jeff had been to find he was no longer there. I figured he’d gone out to get a beer, yet he returned somewhat sweaty and without a beer. He shouts over “Yeah, I had to get into the pit. I may be 58, but I just had to. The call was too strong.” Laughing into the roar of Clutch and remembering great fun in the pit, I’m glad my friend still has it in him.

Clutch @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

The new song “Strive for Excellence” off the forthcoming album is true to the Clutch stylings while swinging the time signature just a tad. As always, Tim is the master of the riffs creating another highly addictive tune. Clutch closed out their set with the crowd favorites (or at least my favorites) “X-Ray Visions” and “Firebirds!” before heading off stage.

Clutch @ Fillmore Detroit - Dec 30, 2021

After a break just long enough to maybe grab a quick swig, Clutch is back in action. They go old school with “The Mob Goes Wild”, “Escape From The Prison Planet”, and the bongzilla of hard rock masterpieces “Spacegrass”.

One lyric from this final monumental song rings out “Whenever it feels right”. This show with Clutch feels right. Yes, it feels so damn good. It feels like home. It feels like I’m living the best I can. Oh yeah, it feels right.

CLUTCH & RIVAL SONS “ Two-Headed Beast Tour” with special guest Fu Manchu

Hard-working road hounds Clutch have been proving themselves on stage night after night for more than three decades – vocalist Neil Fallon declaring “If you're gonna do it, do it live on stage, or don't do it at all” in their 2013 track “Earth Rocker.” It’s an ethos the band still cleave to today.

Since their emergence in 2009, Rival Sons have reignited and recharged rock ‘n’ roll with towering vocals, uncompromising guitar playing, and thunderous grooves to enthusiastic fans the world over.

Fans will soon get another chance to witness the electrifying live magic these skillful musicians conjure, with the announcement of Clutch and Rival Sons’ upcoming fall co-headline tour, The Two Headed Beast Tour, making a stop at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m.

"We are incredibly excited to hit the road again," states CLUTCH . "We've missed the shows, the fans, the venues and the opportunity to watch the other bands we share the stage with. It's going to feel like our first show all over again and we can't wait! Come out and let's make some rock and roll!"

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m. at ClutchOnTour.com .

CLUTCH tour dates:

Dec. 27 - Baltimore, MD - Rams Head Dec. 28 - Sayreville, NJ - Starland Ballroom Dec. 29 - Cleveland, OH - Agoura Theatre Dec. 30 - Detroit, MI - Filmore Theatre Dec. 31 - Cincinnati, OH - The Icon

CLUTCH drummer Jean-Paul Gaster recently told the Chicago-based webzine Metal Kaoz that he and his bandmates have "written a lot of songs" in the last year for the follow-up to 2018's "Book Of Bad Decisions" LP. He said: "We've been writing now for our new album that we will record in the fall, and I think we're spending more time than ever in the studio, just trying out different ideas. And most of the ideas don't ever really make it to the end; we try 10 things and we keep one.

"I think we are even more selective than we were before as to which ideas we really decide to focus on. And I think it is because we have so much more time. Before, we would come home for a tour and maybe we would have three weeks off. So, the first week, we don't do really much of anything — everybody goes back home to their families and we rest — and then the next two weeks we would get together and we would just jam really hard and get a bunch of ideas, and then on the road and play those ideas, and then come back and do it again. And that process might go on for a year and a half. This has been different. This is the first time where we've had so much time at home to work on ideas and never really tried them in a live setting. So I'm not sure how it's gonna impact the record. But I think it's gonna make for a different album — whether it's good, bad or otherwise, it's too early to tell. But, for sure, it's a different dynamic, and it requires more of us.

"So often, when we have new ideas and we put them in front of an audience, you can really tell right away — we know right away if the song is the right tempo, we know right away if the riffs are where they need to be, if the chorus is the way it needs to be," Gaster added. "It's a testing ground. And we don't have that right now. So, for that reason, I think we are being a lot more careful about what ideas we really wanna focus on, and which ones we think, 'You know what? We've done that before. Let's do something a little different.'"

Gaster went on to say that the new CLUTCH album will likely arrive in early 2022 — "hopefully before we start really hitting the road again. And it'll be fun to get back out there," he said. "Man, I just miss it so much."

"Book Of Bad Decisions" was recorded at Sputnik Sound studio in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Vance Powell . The record sold 26,000 copies in America during its first week of availability, giving the group its third consecutive Top 20 album on the Billboard 200.

Clutch To Play Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre Friday, July 28

(DETROIT – March 14, 2023) – Clutch announced the “No Stars Above Tour” with special guests Dinosaur Jr. and Red Fang which includes a stop at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on Friday, July 28 at 7:15 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 17 at 10 a.m. To purchase tickets in the Crest Ford pavilion, luxury seats and on the lawn, visit 313Presents.com , LiveNation.com and Ticketmaster.com .

About Clutch

Clutch shares more in common with The Grateful Dead, Rush, and the Allman Brothers than their heavy riffs and heady twists-of-phrase might suggest. Because like those bands, the supporters who adore Clutch are there for the experience, community, and authentic connection.

Seneca Valley High School classmates Neil Fallon (vocals), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass), and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums) share an unshakeable musical and personal bond now three decades strong. Shaped by the same region which birthed Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and Rites Of Spring, Clutch crafts hyper-literate and libertine jams informed by hardcore fury and fuzzy, athletic, stoner rock.

A worldwide cabal of fans and critics cherish the band’s dense and diverse catalog of underground classics, released through major labels, indies, and since 2009, Clutch’s own Weathermaker imprint. Sunrise On Slaughter Beach, the band’s thirteenth studio album, is a slamming summary of everything that makes the band great and another giant leap forward into career longevity.

“There’s no question that Clutch etched themselves a name in the pantheon of great rock bands,” Lambgoat wrote in 2004. Classic Rock Magazine counted 2013’s Earth Rocker and 2015’s Psychic Warfare among the 50 Best Rock Albums of the 2010s. Rolling Stone described 2018’s Book of Bad Decisions as “bathed in the grit and liberal fuzz tone that have made their live shows legendary.”

Those live shows over the years include tours with Slayer, System Of A Down, and Marilyn Manson, and more recent co-headlining treks with Dropkick Murphys, Killswitch Engage, and Mastodon. Like Slayer or Iron Maiden, Clutch outlasted rock bands anchored to “hit songs” and the pressure of replicating them. The foursome from Germantown, Maryland, isn’t bound by trends. Across 13 studio albums and assorted releases since 1991, they’ve earned a reputation as one of the best around.

About Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr.’s released its fifth studio album Sweep It Into Space during the 13th year of their rebirth. In the decades since the release of Dinosaur Jr.'s original triptych of foundational albums, it has become clear that their sound -- once hailed as a sort of almost-tamed noise -- is/was/always-has-been fully functioning pop music of a sort. The subsequent generations of bands who grew up breathing Dino's fumes managed to tinker around with the edges of their original post-hardcore song-forms enough for listeners to realize there had always been melodies at the center of everything they did. What Dinosaur Jr.. produces is nothing but a beautiful new version of the rock continuum -- riff, power, beat and longing, created with an eye on the infinite future.

About Red Fang

Red Fang is comprised of guitarist and vocalist Bryan Giles, bassist and vocalist Aaron Beam, guitarist David Sullivan and drummer John Sherman. The band just released its fifth studio album titled Arrows.

Arrows was recorded at Halfling Studios in the band’s hometown of Portland, OR, with longtime collaborator Chris Funk, who produced Murder The Mountains and 2013’s Whales and Leeches. “Chris is a major influencer as far as the weird ambient stuff in between the songs and the creepy incidental noises within the songs,” Giles points out. “I think he definitely creates an added layer of atmosphere that we wouldn’t have otherwise.”

After the woozy opening salvo of “Take It Back,” Arrows launches into a super-rock trifecta of what Red Fang does best—from Melvins-esque power dirge “Unreal Estate” into the anthemic title track into up-tempo banger “My Disaster.” It’s been nearly five years since 2016’s Only Ghosts, but your favorite beer-crushing, zombie-killing, air-guitar-contest-judging metal heroes are back in action, doing what they do best—AND MORE.

7 Detroit tours that tell a deeper story of the city: What to know

A s a little boy, about 8 years old with his brown hair spiked in the late ‘90s style, Gabriel Gutierrez would take his brother’s hand and cross the street from his parents’ tortilla business, enter a heavenly smelling donut shop, pass the lively store patrons, and order a coffee for his mom or their employees.

For himself, he’d order a white cream Long John, somewhat like an éclair, just to eat the cream.

These days, Gutierrez owns that hand-cut donut shop, Donut Villa, in southwest Detroit, which has ties not only to his personal history but that of his family, whose first southwest Detroit business opened in the 1940s. It is part of the greater fabric of community histories that make up Detroit’s story, as told by the City Institute on one of their "Detroit in Context Learning Journey" tours.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The City Institute is one of a number of organizations to offer tours that go a bit deeper than sightseeing and basic headlines in Detroit. The groups seek to give context to where Detroit is now, where it is going, and often to correct the record on where it’s been.

Some tours explore the once prominent Black Bottom neighborhood, some explore Detroit’s history with the Underground Railroad, some explore Corktown, and ones like the City Institute’s "Learning Journey" also bring the city’s story forward to today and look to the future.

Though not a definitive list of all the tours in Detroit, here are some tour groups and guides to help deepen your knowledge:

City Institute

The "Learning Journey," on which Gutierrez’s business was featured , is a yearly, all-day bus tour that goes neighborhood by neighborhood so that attendees can hear from business owners, investors, and nonprofit and city leaders on the history of the neighborhoods, what’s currently offered there, how it supports itself, and future projects. A shorter version of the tour is also offered, primarily for private tour groups.

The City Institute’s mission is to equip residents and stakeholders to build an inclusive, equitable and thriving future for Detroit. Southwest, with its shifting demographics over the last century, is just one neighborhood that can serve as a foundation for those seeking to understand the city a bit better, said Gutierrez.

“There's a lot of history and a lot of stories,” Gutierrez said of the city. “Not always great, right? And for people to just understand that the communities that they are involved with, they have extensive roots and histories of their own that can provide context.”

Learning the city’s wins also encourages retention and keeps energy to fight for Detroit’s future, by the telling of Jeanette Pierce, founder and president of the City Institute.

“We believe it's important for people to understand how we got to where we are … then come to today, where we actually meet and hear about and talk to people doing amazing work in the city,” said Pierce.

  • Topics: Public tours include a virtual one on redlining, a form of housing discrimination, walking ones on architecture, specific neighborhoods including New Center and Black history, as told by those who lived it
  • Cost: Public tours - free (with donations welcome) - $20, with "Learning Journey" tours $125 including meals; Private tours and private "Learning Journey" tours: $20 -$100 per person
  • Length: 1.5 hours for virtual redlining history tours; generally 2 hours – all day for others
  • Mode of transportation: Walking, bus or virtual
  • Where to register: thecityinstitute.com/public-tours

(Note: Tour costs, lengths and topics vary for most organizations named in this story. Many are open to creating special programs upon request. Contact each tour guide and group for further details)

Black Scroll Network History & Tours

Jamon Jordan, Detroit’s first official historian, was appointed to his role in 2021 by Mayor Mike Duggan. Before that, however, he was already known as a prominent unofficial historian of the city, founding the Black Scroll Network History & Tours.

While Jordan said he encourages folks to do the tours that exist on restaurants, bars, the auto industry and the like, he said he realized they were leaving out a big part of the Detroit story – African American history.

On his various tours, Jordan may point out the neighborhood where three Detroit music legends grew up or talk about the presence of Black people in the region in 1700s. Some tours also explore the once thriving Black neighborhood and business district that were destroyed through racist officials, urban renewal and highway building , with Jordan pointing out the still present apartments, townhouses and school building that were given the space instead.

“A big portion of Detroit’s history is invisible, and you have to have someone help you see what is no longer present,” he said.

  • Topics: Motown, slavery, African origins, Black Bottom, the Underground Railroad, the 1967 rebellion and more
  • Cost: Generally $5 - $50 for walking tours, $60 per person for bus tours, and $50 for virtual tours
  • Length: 2 hours for most
  • Mode of transportation: Walking, bus and virtual
  • Where to register: Black Scroll Network's Eventbrite page for public tours, and [email protected] or blackscrollnetwork.weebly.com for private tours

Wheelhouse Detroit

Another way to get a deeper knowledge of the city? By bike.

Wheelhouse Detroit is a bike shop along Detroit’s riverfront, but tours have been a part of its mission since its opening in 2008 thanks to owner Kelli Kavanaugh and her founding partner’s backgrounds in community development.

“It was important for us to tell a story of Detroit that isn’t necessarily the one that the masses hear or understand to be true,” she said, later adding: “We’re not cheerleaders, we’re trying to tell a real story of a very interesting and complicated city.”

This story includes discussion of history and current developments. On the Corktown tour she gives, Kavanaugh delves into how freeway development, urban renewal, and parking for Tiger Stadium shaped the neighborhood as it is now, along with gentrification there. She also uses history to counter any belief that it only got “cool” now.

  • Topics: Poletown churches, Eastern Market, Hamtramck, the auto industry, techno and more.
  • Cost: $30 for shorter, weekday tours ($40 including bike rental), $45 for 3-hour tours ($55 with rental) and private tours starting at $200-$250 for up to six people.
  • Length: 2 hours for shorter, weekday tours, 3 hours for others
  • Mode of transportation: “Pedal power,” using bikes or e-bikes, used manually. Attendees can bring bikes or rent from Wheelhouse Detroit
  • Where to register: wheelhousedetroit.com

Ken Coleman

As a Detroit historian, journalist and communications professional, Ken Coleman likes to say he’s been dedicated to chronicling Black life in Detroit since 1991.

His extensive historical knowledge goes back way further, of course, and it’s his passion to share Black history as an independent tour guide, covering whatever topics in that area a client may want.

Some favorite stops include the Gateway to Freedom International Memorial along the Detroit riverfront which pays homage to those who used and were involved in the Underground Railroad . There’s also the Second Baptist Church of Detroit, which lays claim to being the oldest religious institution owned by the Black community in the Midwest, a former station on the Underground Railroad and establishing the city’s first school for Black children.

  • Topics: Motown, the Underground Railroad, Black Bottom and more
  • Cost: Prices starting at about $50 per hour per small group, and generally $300-$500 for a 3-4 hour tour for a larger organization
  • Length: 1-2 hours for walking tours, 3-4 for bus tours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking or bus, if provided
  • Where to register: Email Coleman at [email protected] or call him at 313-551-1304

Preservation Detroit

Preservation Detroit was founded in 1975 as a student organization fighting the demolition of historic campus buildings at Wayne State University. These days the group works to preserve historic sites throughout Detroit, and it hosts tours on the history of architecture, sculptures and more to educate the masses.

A high point of downtown tour coordinator Davis Zaleski’s walking excursion is a visit to the Guardian Building, the 1920s, cathedral-like, Art Deco skyscraper. There’s also a quick stop by the recently reopened 38-story, Italian Renaissance-style Book Tower.

“During the early part of the 20th century, with the advent of the auto industry and all the other industries, they built like crazy and they built some of the most beautiful buildings in the country,” Zaleski said.

Some of that history has been torn down or poorly developed, but preservation has increased over the years, Zaleski said. Preservation Detroit likes to emphasize good development, and Zaleski said he hopes attendees walk away with an appreciation for what Detroit was and could be.

  • Topics: Ferry Street, Midtown, Eastern Market, downtown, public art, cemeteries, churches and more
  • Cost: $15 for members, students and seniors; $18 for all others on public tours; private tours, per the website, can be arranged for $100 for groups of five people or less and rates of $20 per person for larger groups
  • Length: Between 2 and 2.5 hours
  • Mode of transportation: Walking
  • Where to register: preservationdetroit.org or through Eventbrite

Detroit History Tours

Detroit History Tours, along with the Detroit History Club, serves several purposes, said Bailey Sisoy-Moore, executive director of the two. Key among its motivations are the ideas that Detroit’s history should be written by Detroiters and that it’s hard to defund or vote to implode historic sites that are fully understood.

“History education helps make sure that the important parts of our history don't disappear quietly,” Sisoy-Moore said.

The tour group tells the history of the city starting with the Native American tribes that were here first through to present day and even future development plans.

  • Topics: Suffragettes, the Detroit People Mover transit system, cops and mobsters, LGBTQ history and more
  • Cost: $27 for walking tours, $30-$65 for bus tours, $5 - $20 for self-guided mobile app tours with lifetime download; food tours are $80 - $120, including the meals and tips. Private tours start at $250 if transportation is provided, $450 for walking and $1,525 for tours with the van or bus provided by Detroit History Tours.
  • Length: 2 hours for walking tours, 90 minutes to 3.5 hours for bus tours
  • Where to register: detroithistorytours.com

Detroit Historical Society

Founded in 1921, the Detroit Historical Society now boasts tours at not only the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, but also at locations throughout metro Detroit.

Guided tours at the historical museum take groups of 15 or more people through the indigenous populations that were here, auto history, culture and more, said Kimmie Dobos, manager of education and public programs. There are also tailored museum tours that dive deeper into the African American experience and what led to the 1967 rebellion.

The Great Lakes museum, on Belle Isle, also features a maritime history tour exploring Detroit’s long history on the water from canoes to freighters and more.

For some off-site explorations, there are “Behind The Scenes” tours of historic locations including neighborhoods, a gallery, and a battlefield.

  • Topics: The summer of 1967, Temple Beth El, Boston Edison, Eastern Market, tiny homes and more
  • Cost: Guided tours at the museums are $11 for adults and $10 for seniors, the 1967 rebellion tour is $12 for adults and $11 for seniors, and the “Detroit’s African American Perspectives” tour with Jamon Jordan is $300 for up to 20 people.“Behind The Scenes” tours are $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers.
  • Length: Generally 1- 1.5 hours
  • Where to register: detroithistorical.org

Of course, these are just some of the tour offerings in the city. You also can see the sights with a Segway tour , by boat and there’s even a tour to learn some Detroit history on a historic bar tour , among others.

App maps out tours of murals in Windsor and Detroit

Motorcitymurals.tours provides directions to — and information about — 150 murals.

Social Sharing

Software company Parallel42 has created an app called MotorCityMurals.tours to help people explore street art in Windsor and Detroit.

The app allows people to take a self-guided tour of murals in the cities.

"We created this app [to] share the art in Windsor and Detroit with both communities," said Parallel42 owner Doug Sartori.

One of the pages on the MotorCityMurals.tours app that explains one of the murals on the tour.

Sartori says he has catalogued 100 locations in Windsor and 50 in Detroit in the app. The murals are marked on the maps of Windsor and Detroit with icons. Once the user gives the app permission to access his or her location, the software draws a route from the user's location to whichever mural they have chosen.

Sartori says the free app contains pictures of the murals and information on their history, each piece's message and — where available — information on the artist.

The app lists murals in downtown Windsor and Detroit, as well as various other locations around Windsor such as Ford City.

"We wanted to make sure that everywhere that we're sending people, there is a good density of art to see and that you're not going to waste your time walking," said Sartori.

This Ford City mural located on Drouillard Road is one of the stops on the mural app tour.

"Anything that brings people downtown for a unique experience that they can't get somewhere else are the things we're trying to promote," said DWBIA chair Chris MacLeod. "It's really cool it tells you something about the artist and the piece of work and when it was done. And it's a great walking tour, great opportunity to get out downtown and we hope that while you're downtown you'll spend a little bit of time in one of our shops or restaurants."

The map is still a work in progress — Sartori hopes to add more mural locations in the future, and says he's open to having users send in suggested additions.

Cam Davis wins Rocket Mortgage Classic for second time after Akshay Bhatia three-putt

Daily Wrap Up

Change Text Size

DETROIT (AP) — Cam Davis won the Rocket Mortgage Classic for the second time, closing with a 2-under 70 on Sunday that gave him a one-shot victory when Akshay Bhatia three-putted from 32 feet on the final hole.

“I wouldn’t wish what happened to Akshay on anyone,” Davis said. “But I’ve done a lot of grinding to kind of get myself out of a hole and just all of a sudden to do that, it’s pretty good.”

Davis, a 29-year-old Australian who won his first PGA TOUR title three years ago at Detroit Golf Club, had not finished better than 38th in sixth starts since he tied for 12th at the Masters in April.

“I started working with a hypnotherapist a few weeks ago just to take another angle into trying to get myself sorted out,” he said. “I saw a little bit of a spark last week, but nothing to show this coming.

"This is crazy.”

Davis pulled into a tie with Bhatia with a birdie on the par-5 17th hole.

Cam Davis' clutch up-and-down for birdie on No. 17 at Rocket Mortgage

“Just a little bit of nerves, honestly,” Bhatia said. “I’m human.”

Davis finished at 18-under 270 on a day of missed opportunities for the final pairing of Bhatia and Aaron Rai, each of whom shot an even-par 72. Davis Thompson (68) and Min Woo Lee (69) also finished one shot back.

Davis became the first two-time winner of the event since its debut on the PGA TOUR schedule in 2019.

The 22-year-old Bhatia was seeking his third PGA TOUR title and second this year after leading or sharing the lead after each of the first three rounds. He was coming off a fifth-place finish at the Travelers Championship, where he was in the final group that was disrupted by climate protesters storming the 18th green.

“I know how to close a golf tournament. I’ve done it before,” Bhatia said. “Just today wasn’t my day.”

Cam Davis' interview after winning Rocket Mortgage

Cameron Young shot 73 and plummeted to sixth place with two bogeys over the last three holes.

The pressure to win for the first time on TOUR may have gotten the best of Young, who has been a runner-up seven times, on the par-5 14th when his drive traveled 254 yards into the rough way left of the fairway.

With the ball in flight, Young pushed his driver into the tee box and broke the shaft. He was unable to replace it for the rest of the round.

Davis surged into a tie for the lead with three birdies in a five-hole stretch on the front nine.

He lost a share of the lead with a bogey on the par-5 14th, where his approach landed in rocks bordering a pond, but one birdie and three pars over the final four holes ended up being good enough.

Playing just behind Davis, Bhatia hit his second shot into a greenside bunker on the 17th. He blasted out to 9 feet, but pulled the putt to the left and settled for par.

That was the first of two costly misses.

Earlier in the afternoon, there were signs that it might not be Bhatia’s day.

Rai, who shared the second- and third-round lead with Bhatia, went ahead on the first hole after hitting his approach from 142 yards to 5 feet for birdie.

Bhatia fell two shots back on the par-4 third hole, where his approach settled in thick rough. He only advanced his chip 9 feet, leading to bogey.

He responded with a 31-foot birdie putt on the par-5 fourth, the first of just two birdies on the day.

Detroit Golf Club made an important decision that probably saved its course and its future

clutch tour detroit

A year from now, the excavators, bulldozers and dump trucks will be standing at the ready to begin the first major transformation of Detroit Golf Club’s North Course since it opened more than a century ago.

If all goes according to plan, the course could be unrecognizable to most golf fans when the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the annual PGA Tour stop in Detroit, tees off in 2026.

“It will look like a completely different course,” club president Michael Pricer said matter-of-factly.

Under architect Tyler Rae’s direction, right after next year’s tournament ends more than 100 trees will be removed, native grasses and ditches will be added, greens will be moved and enlarged and bunkers will be added.

For television viewers, the 14th and 18th holes will receive dramatically noticeable changes. The signature pond in front of the 14th green that features sponsor signage during the tournament will be removed and replaced by two large bunkers. The oval-shaped 18th green will be refashioned as a rectangle and moved forward and away from the clubhouse.

About the only people who might recognize Detroit Golf Club in 2026 will be the most astute Donald Ross scholars, or members who have spent significant time in the club’s archives studying Ross’ original 1914 design plans and grainy 1950s-era black-and-white photos.

“We're trying to get it back to the original Ross design,” Pricer said. “So keeping with the legacy and the history of the club, and really honoring the heritage, that you know Donald Ross has created.

“And we believe that this will be a top-100 course when we're done.”

That’s certainly possible because pedigree goes a long way with golf’s cognoscenti who judge those sorts of things.

WAIT, HE'S HOW OLD: Advice for Miles Russell: Stay confident after missing Rocket Mortgage Classic cut at 15

But if you aren’t an annoying golf nerd who drops obscure terms like “redan green” in casual conversation , Pricer has a more accessible comparison to what DGC might look like when Rae’s renovation is completed in November 2025.

“I think it's gonna look a lot like Pinehurst, to be honest with you,” he said, invoking this year’s U.S. Open site. “We're really bringing back the original green complexes that Ross intended to design. They're going to be a lot more open, they're going to be a lot bigger.

“So you're going to get a much more expansive view of the entire golf course. Yeah, I don't think it's going to be anywhere near as drastic as Oakland (Hills Country Club's renovation) , but it'll be opened up quite a bit.”

Just like its more famous Ross cousin to the north, DGC also faced some resistance from members — perhaps akin to hitting a lob wedge into a two-club wind — when it came to approving the $16 million project. In March, it moved forward after 57% of voting members approved it.

Of course, no one wants to spend thousands on a membership, thousands on annual dues and food and other fees and then also have to fork over thousands more for a course renovation.

But this wasn’t a mere vanity project. Pricer and club treasurer Keith Hazely worked hard to explain over several meetings with members that the renovation was a necessity not only to improve the course’s health and playability but also to ensure its future.

Removing trees will assist in growing grass. There will be enhancements to tee boxes and fairways. Then there’s the unseen stuff that probably matters the most, like addressing the 24-year-old irrigation system and the original 1920s drainage infrastructure.

Pricer said DGC’s greens can drain 6 inches of water in one hour, whereas Oakland Hills can drain roughly 20-plus inches in an hour.

“So if we get an inch and a half of rain over 36 hours, we're essentially flooded,” he said. “So we lose cart revenue because we can't put carts out there because it's too soft.”

That turns into a trickle-down problem. Fewer people on the course means less food and beverage revenue, too.

“It just really economically impacts the club in a pretty tough way,” Pricer said. “At the end of the day, the golf course is the reason why we're here. And so it's time to make the investment.”

That investment cost the top-tier Class A members a one-time assessment of $5,800 and then $170 per month in perpetuity. Not exactly cheap, but hardly bank-breaking for a private club whose parking lot is filled with Cadillacs and Mercedes.

And since the renovation will be done separately on the North Course’s front and back nines, members will still have 27 of 36 of DGC’s holes open for at least two months after next year’s tournament.

PROS TAKE OVER: PGA Tour players' belief in selves gets a boost at 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Maybe it just took time for the cost and logistics and the reality to sink in for some members, because who wants to pay more for anything? But a week and a half ago, Pricer was walking off the driving range when one member who voted no in March pulled him aside and apologized.

“And you know, it was a nice validation,” he said. “We still got it through but I think a lot of people are starting to realize that when spring and summer come, when it happens, it becomes much more reflective like, ‘Oh, we do need this.’”

Pricer explained all of this while sitting in a cluttered club office. He was surrounded by papers and folders and the rest of the fiscal and logistical detritus of getting a $16 million project underway. The commotion and cacophony of a PGA Tour event whirled outside the window.

And then Pricer mentioned a chilling prospect.

“Because, this is my personal opinion,” he said, “if we don't do this, this course dies.”

24 hours in Detroit: Michigan Central Station, Eastern Market and the Motown Museum

DETROIT, Michigan – In December 1913, a massive fire destroyed Detroit’s historic downtown train station. Fortunately, a new, larger train station was already under construction, and was rushed into service without fanfare.

More than 100 years later, that replacement station -- newly restored -- is finally getting the grand opening it deserves.

The massive Michigan Central Station, which opened in 1913 and closed 75 years later, reopened last month, after a stunning renovation.

Ford Motor Co. bought the abandoned structure in 2018 and spent nearly $1 billion to bring it, as well as an adjacent building and surrounding property, back to life.

A star-studded concert last month featuring Diana Ross, Eminem, Jack White and others helped inaugurate the space.

The building’s first floor is open to the public for self-guided tours on Fridays and Saturdays all summer. Touring this symbol of the city’s resurgence was the highlight of my quick trip to Detroit last month.

There were other highlights as well. I wandered through Eastern Market, explored the Motown Museum and took a Segway tour through town -- all recommended.

One thing I didn’t do was catch a Guardians game at Comerica Park (the White Sox were in town on the weekend of my visit).

The Guardians are playing the Tigers six times in Detroit in the next few weeks (July 8-11 plus July 29-30), which makes this month a great time to check out what’s new in the Motor City.

Michigan Central Station

The last time I was in Detroit was 2019, shortly after Ford bought the abandoned train station in the city’s Corktown neighborhood, just west of downtown.

The 18-story building had become a symbol of the city’s decay – filled with trash, damaged by water and vandals, covered with graffiti.

Indeed, the building may have been unsalvageable if the restoration had begun just a few years later, according to exhibits inside the structure.

Visitors start their tour in the women’s waiting room, where a short film covers the building’s past, present and future. Then it’s onto the Grand Hall, with soaring ceilings, massive arched windows and gorgeous architectural detail, some of which was recreated using Ford laser scanners and other equipment used in auto manufacturing. (”It’s basically a part. It’s just not going into an automobile,” said one of the workers on video.)

Michigan Central was the tallest train station in the world when it opened, a Beaux-Arts beauty with marble floors, bronze chandeliers and Corinthian columns. Designed by the same architectural firms that worked on New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, it featured a three-story depot at its base with 15 floors of office space above.

And its height, it welcomed as many as 4,000 rail passengers a day.

The station started its decline in the 1960s, fueled, ironically, by the rise of the automobiles being built by Ford’s own factories. The last train left the station on Jan. 5, 1988.

Twenty years later, a Detroit City Council resolution called for the building’s demolition. Fortunately, the city didn’t have the money to bring it down.

In addition to the Grand Hall, visitors can tour:

* The train station’s former restaurant, now filled with a curated catalog of the restoration effort, including numerous items discovered during the renovation. Shortly after Ford announced it was buying the building, an anonymous “donor” reached out to reveal that they had the station’s 700-pound Carriage House clock, missing for decades. It was returned – along with dozens of other items, including staircase finials, window trim and fire extinguishers.

* The former reading room, serving now as a portrait gallery, filled with the photos of people whose lives have been touched by the station, including immigrants who arrived here, men who went off to war here, people who worked here and people who helped in the restoration.

* The former ticket office, dubbed the poster vault, with vintage train posters, concert announcements, sports team memorabilia and more.

The building’s South Concourse includes kids activities, a large interactive piece of artwork, plus some preserved graffiti art on hallway walls.

Ford, which envisions the building as the centerpiece of an innovation district, plans to relocate 2,500 employees here by 2028. Other companies plan to rent space here, as well, including Google.

Look for retail and dining options to be added in the future, too.

In a letter to the community displayed inside the building, Bill Ford, executive chairman of the Ford Motor Co., calls the restoration “a bold declaration that Detroit’s best days lie ahead.”

That’s a big statement, considering all that Detroit has been through.

Still, seeing is believing. And all of us who are rooting for the comeback of so many great American cities including Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Cleveland, should put this place on their bucket list of places to see.

More information: The first floor of the station is open 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 31 (closed July 5-6 and closing at 2 p.m. July 20). Self-guided tours are free, no ticket required. Information: michigancentral.com

Eastern Market and Segway Tour

To see more of the city, I booked a tour with Detroit Segway, owned by long-time Detroiter Maureen Kearns. Her 90-minute Strait to the Point tour starts at Eastern Market, heads south toward the river and then meanders through downtown.

I had never before been on a Segway, those two-wheeled, back-to-the-future transportation devices introduced in 2001. I’m happy to report that the machines are easy to use, even for those of us who are athletically challenged. After a 10-minute primer, we were ready to go.

We wheeled first along the Dequindre Cut Greenway, a 2-mile multiuse trail east of downtown that follows the former Grand Trunk Railroad line and is mostly below street level. The path is known for its colorful displays of urban artwork and graffiti, which I perhaps unwisely attempted to photograph while speeding past at 10 mph. We were joined on the trail by cyclists, scooters and a few walkers.

The Dequindre Cut deadends at the Detroit River, within lovely Milliken State Park, where we connected with the Riverwalk, the scenic waterfront path that travels 5 miles between Belle Isle and the Ambassador Bridge.

Along the river, we passed a Viking cruise ship docked for the day, then turned north toward downtown, past the iconic Renaissance Center, a collection of skyscrapers completed in 1977 and currently owned by General Motors.

Earlier this year, GM announced it was leaving the Renaissance Center and moving a mile away to Hudson’s Detroit, the new tower under construction by Bedrock, the development firm founded by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who owns another 100-plus buildings in town.

The fate of the Renaissance Center is unclear, said Kearns, who would like to see it turned into residential units. “Bringing it down is a real possibility,” she lamented.

Downtown Detroit, while geographically much larger than Cleveland, has a population of about 7,000, or roughly one-third the size of Cleveland’s, according to recent estimates.

Downtown felt busy on the weekend of my visit, but without ball games and other events, I’m sure it feels pretty empty.

After wheeling through downtown – past Campus Martius Park, the historic Guardian Building and the Belt alley, which doubles as an outdoor art gallery – we wound our way back to Eastern Market and set off on two feet.

Eastern Market, founded in 1841 and on this site since 1891, is the largest outdoor farmers market in the country, spread across 43 acres.

For the full effect, come on a Saturday, when as many as 225 vendors are set up throughout the space, selling everything from produce to prepared foods to flowers, artwork, T-shirts and more.

The market adds extra hours in the summer, when it’s open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

We strolled and shopped for about an hour on the Sunday of our visit, until it was time for one last only-in-Detroit experience, across town at the Motown Museum. For information: easternmarket.org , detroitsegway.com

Touring the Motown Museum

Berry Gordy, who founded Motown Records in Detroit in 1959, relocated the company to Los Angeles in 1972.

His sister, Esther, stayed behind and continued to work in the offices where the business was founded.

Eventually, fans started stopping by, asking for tours. And the Motown Museum was born.

During its heyday, Motown encompassed eight houses on West Grand Boulevard, a few miles north of downtown. Today, the museum tour takes visitors through two of those houses, including Hitsville U.S.A., where Berry Gordy lived in a second-story apartment (complete with bright orange sofa and 1960s-era playpen), and the studio where future stars including Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye got their start.

Museum exhibits cover Gordy’s early years, as he struggled to break through in the music industry, and the many record labels he eventually created (in part because radio stations limited how many artists per label were played on the air).

A special exhibit covers the life and work of Claudette Robinson, aka the first lady of Motown, Smokey Robinson’s first wife and a singer with the Miracles, Motown’s first big act.

Also here: a black fedora and sequined glove donated to the museum by Michael Jackson in 1988.

And don’t miss the 1960s-era vending machine stocked with candy from several decades ago that is the centerpiece of a very sweet story.

The vending machine always carried Baby Ruth bars third from the right, so that a young Stevie Wonder, who is blind, could always find his favorite candy. Decades ago, fellow musicians started depositing dimes on the top of the machine for Wonder to use – a tradition that continues today.

The tour ends in Studio A, where visitors are invited to channel their inner Temptations by belting out the first verse of “My Girl.” Our guide also encouraged us to dance, scooping our arms right and left (“like shoveling snow,” he said). Let’s just say, I won’t be quitting my day job.

The museum is in the midst of a major expansion, expected to open in 2026 behind the historic homes, which will include a new 50,000 square foot exhibit space, small theater and outdoor plaza.

More information: The Motown Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday; admission is $20 and by guided tour only. Buy in advance, particularly on weekends in the summer. See motownmuseum.org
