There’s something for everyone here, and you can reach the Uluwatu area in about 1 hour of driving from Kuta, Canggu, and the other popular tourist hotspots in Bali Indonesia.

We’ve visited Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula many times over the years, but it seems like we’re always discovering new things to do and see here.

How To Get Around Uluwatu Bali

The Uluwatu area is big and spread out, so if you want to go exploring all the beaches and such, then you’ll need transportation.

The main way to get around Uluwatu is to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online). Airport transfers to Uluwatu from the Bali airport can also be arranged with your hotel or booked online .

Ride-hailing apps like Grab and Go-Jek can be used for short taxi rides around Uluwatu Bali, but since it’s such a spread out area there aren’t a lot of drivers available. Hopefully that’ll change in the future.

Top Things To Do In Uluwatu Bali

1. uluwatu temple.

Of course you have to start your Uluwatu travels by visiting the epic 1,000 year old temple that gave this area its name!

Uluwatu Temple sits on the edge of a big sea cliff and it’s one of the most popular places to watch the sunset in Bali, Indonesia.

Hide your sunglasses! The monkeys at this temple are known for trying to snatch anything they can.

2. Bingin Beach

Bingin is a photogenic beach with exotic boulders and seaweed covered rocks. It’s great for photos or surfing, and it’s less crowded than some of the other beaches in the area.

There’s a bit of trash and rubble lately from hotel construction, but some high quality accommodation and restaurants are starting to spring up here.

3. Pemutih Beach

Pantai Pemutih is a popular surfing spot with some cliffside hotels and a small (but nice) white sand beach.

Not too many people seem to know about this beach, which makes it that much better. If you want to stay directly on the beach, check out Rock N Reef Hotel Uluwatu !

4. Padang Padang Beach

Padang Padang is a neat little beach tucked into the cliffs. To get to it, you have to squeeze through a narrow passage in the rocks and then walk down some steps.

This beach is a popular spot for surfing, or you can just sip a fresh coconut and hang out on the white sand with the monkeys.

5. Balangan Beach

This is a nice free beach with white sand and blue waves. Like many beaches in Uluwatu, it’s a great spot for sunset.

Balangan Beach is also popular for prewedding photoshoots because of the cliff above the beach, where you can get amazing views of the ocean scenery and the whole coastline.

It’s still fairly quiet here and not too commercial. You can access the beach by going down some stairs, and there are two parking areas — one for the beach, and one on the cliff above it.

6. Thomas Beach

This is one of Bali’s nicest beaches, and chilling here is one of our favorite things to do in Uluwatu. It has a long strip of white sand scattered with boulders, and not too many people.

7. Suluban Beach

Suluban is a secluded beach with caves and huge rocks to explore, plus surfable waves, but my favorite thing is the restaurant view. This little warung on top of the cliffs has amazing views of the coastline.

We pulled up a chair here and enjoyed some drinks with the scenery, and even got greeted by a monitor lizard sneaking around on the cliffs! It’s an epic place to grab breakfast while exploring Uluwatu Bali.

8. Batu Jaran Hill

This is a huge cliff near Uluwatu Temple, but there are no crowds and no safety fences to block your view of the waves crashing on the rocks below. It’s undoubtedly one of the best things to do near Uluwatu Temple!

You can see the Uluwatu pagoda in the distance, and we even spotted a few sea turtles swimming in the waves. It’s an incredibly photogenic spot that most tourists don’t seem to know about yet.

9. Karang Boma Cliff

This is another steep cliff near Uluwatu, but it’s on the south side of the temple and requires a short walk from a separate parking area.

It’s a great spot for sunset, and you should have the place mostly to yourself. We just discovered this viewpoint recently, but it’s one of our new favorite things to do in Uluwatu!

Karang Boma Cliff

10. Nunggalan Beach

Also called Nyang Nyang, this is one of the longest white sand beaches in south Bali. The walk down and back up is a bit of a killer, but you’re rewarded with a huge private beach and a cool wooden shipwreck for pictures!

11. Melasti Beach

Melasti is a highly developed beach with a road carved into the tall limestone cliffs, giving it a stunning background.

This beach has a long strip of white sand, clean turquoise water, plenty of parking space, and a bunch of different fancy clubs lining the beachfront: Cattamaran , Minoo , and Palmilla . You can also reach Karma Beach Club from here by walking.

Normally I’m not a big fan of seeing once-empty beaches get so developed like this, but I think Melasti was actually done pretty well. There’s sometimes a little bit of trash, but overall it’s surprisingly clean and nice.

12. Green Bowl Beach

Green Bowl is one of my favorite hidden beaches in Uluwatu.

It may not be a very big beach, and the steep walk down is tiring, but it’s a nice white sand beach with good sunset views.

Surfers come to Green Bowl for the waves, and there are two caves to explore on the beach as well. This can be a nice place to hide if the sun gets too strong.

13. Gunung Payung Beach

This is a hidden beach overlooked by cliffs and a quiet Hindu temple.

You have to go down a long stairway to reach the beach, but then it’s all yours. If you walk along the coast, there’s even a big sea cave.

Gunung Payung Beach

14. Dreamland Beach

Dreamland has a nice long stretch of white sand lined with sunbeds you can rent.

Sadly this beach has gone a bit downhill in recent years because of trash washing up from the ocean, but hopefully things improve again.

Dreamland Beach

15. Tegal Wangi Beach

Tegal Wangi is a pretty small beach, but it’s still a secret to most Bali tourists, so it’s never crowded.

This beach has two sea caves. The first one is pretty small, but if you keep walking further down the beach there’s a second bigger cave. At low tide, there are also natural pools you can sit and soak in while enjoying the views.

We came here at sunrise, but actually the best time to visit is at sunset. Since the beach is facing west, you’ll have a great view of the sunset from inside the caves!

UPDATE: Tegal Wangi is currently closed to visitors, but hopefully they reopen it soon.

16. Uluwatu Cafes

The Uluwatu area is loaded with hip cafes and restaurants to suit every niche.

Some of our top picks would be Suka Espresso , Nalu Bowls, La Baracca (Italian), Mango Tree (Mexican), and The Loft .

17. Uluwatu Beach Clubs

The beaches and cliffs around Uluwatu are just perfect for clubs, so naturally it has quite a few of them.

The way these clubs usually work is that you pay an entrance fee (anywhere from 100k to 500k Rupiah), and then you get to use that as a food and beverage credit, plus you get access to a lounge with a pool, sunbeds, and WiFi.

Depending on the club, your view from the lounge could be a nice beachfront, or an infinity pool — or both! Sipping drinks by an infinity pool is a great way to watch the sunset in Uluwatu.

Some good clubs to check out are Ulu Cliffhouse , Sundays Beach Club , Palmilla , El Kabron , and Oneeighty .

Our absolute favorite club for sunset is the Oneeighty cliff pool at The Edge! The pool has a glass bottom and amazing views of the Uluwatu cliffs.

18. Uluwatu Massage & Spa

Practically every third building in Bali is a massage shop, and Uluwatu has plenty of them too.

Balinese massage is fantastic and the prices can be very affordable, at 100k Rupiah ($7 USD) or less for a 1 hour body massage or foot massage.

A few of the highest rated massage places in Uluwatu are Laniakea Spa , Zahra Spa , and OurSpa Uluwatu . These places are terrific and you may need reservations, although honestly you can go to just about any spa in the bukit peninsula and get a good experience.

Many of the high end resorts in Uluwatu also have their own spa and massage centers, which are usually pricey but top notch.

We’ve never had a bad massage anywhere in Bali. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a full day of hiking or touring.

19. Surfing Uluwatu

The Uluwatu area is famous for its world class surfing spots.

There are a bunch of them, but check out Padang Padang or Pemutih Beach for starters. Another popular spot is Dreamland Beach.

20. Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK)

This is a cultural park in the center of the Bukit Peninsula, about 20 minutes from Uluwatu Temple.

It’s used for exhibitions and Balinese cultural events, but most people know it for the giant statues of Hindu figures.

The centerpiece of the park is a statue of the god Vishnu riding the mythical bird Garuda. At 120 meters tall (400 feet), it’s one of the tallest statues in the world.

Things To Do In Uluwatu At Night

There are lots of good things to do in Uluwatu at night.

If you’re looking for a cultural experience, you can catch the sunset at Uluwatu Temple and watch the Balinese ‘Kecak’ (fire dance), otherwise you can head to one of the many beach clubs and cliff bars in the area.

The Uluwatu sunset is legendary in Bali, and there are so many good places to experience it. Check out the Ayana Rock Bar for a romantic dinner by the waves, or Sunset Point Uluwatu for a more budget friendly option.

Is Uluwatu Bali Safe?

Yes, Uluwatu is very safe. It’s generally known as one of the safest areas in Bali, and violent crime is rare in Indonesia in general. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues.

The main thing to watch out for is drive-by phone snatchings, which do happen in some parts of Bali from time to time, so just remember to put away your phone when you’re by a busy road with passing motorbikes.

Want to Stay in Canggu?

Come visit  Tribal Bali  – Bali’s first specially designed, custom-built hostel…

Bali’s most special backpacker hostel is finally open…. Tribal Bali is a  custom-designed, purpose-built hostel in Canggu  – a place to work, rest, play and stay. A place to find your tribe and hands down the best place in Bali to hustle hard and make new friends…

These are the absolute must do activities and must see attractions for your stay in Uluwatu !

1. Spend the day at Balangan (and don’t forget the cliff at sunset)

If you’re looking for one beach in Uluwatu that has a little bit of everything, Pantai Balangan is an excellent choice when backpacking Bali . It has great restaurants, beach bars, not too many people, some great little walks, and, of course, is gorgeous. What more could you want from it?

There are plenty of things to do at Balangan Beach. Some of the best surfing in Uluwatu is here If you’re not up for surfing, there are lounges and umbrellas around for beach bums and a Bintang is never hard to find either.

Aerial view of Balangan Beach with waves and stairway up to the top of nearby cliffs

On a slightly odder note, one of my favorite things to do in Uluwatu is to visit the New Kuta Golf Course. This is not because I necessarily like to play golf (I really don’t) but because I like to walk around the grounds. Located on the edges of the cliffs of Uluwatu, this course may have one of the prettiest views in the world. Plus, I like to yell “FOUR” and fuck with the golfers a little.

Insider Tip: There is a trail leading up to the New Kuta Golf course directly from the beach. Just look for the stairs.

Watch out for: The cliff viewpoint to the north of Balangan – this is a great place to watch the sunset.

2. See a kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple

This is probably one of the most touristy things to do in Uluwatu. People travel from all over Bali to see the sunset at Uluwatu Temple and many stick afterwards to see the Kecak Fire Dance performance.

Though it can be pretty busy, the kecak fire dance is pretty damn cool to watch. The performance involves about eighty people and zero musical instruments. A large group of seated men use their own vocals to produce a sort of rhythmic melody to which a group of costumed dancers perform to. The effect is very hypnotic and you’ll soon fall into a trance after listening long enough.

Kecak fire dance performance at Uluwatu temple

Tickets can be bought at the offices of Uluwatu Temple or ahead of time with an organized tour. If you choose the latter, you’ll also get to see the temple itself as a part of the deal. Check out the deals for the fire dance here !

  • Watch out for: the monkeys – they’re deft thieves around the temple.
  • Insider Tip: consider buying your tickets ahead of time – most of the seats are reserved for organized tours.

3. Run away to Nyang Nyang Beach

Without a doubt, Nyang Nyang is the absolute best beach in Uluwatu ; NAY one of the best beaches in all of Bali. It’s perfect white sand stretch on for almost 2 kilometers and are touched by some of the most beautiful turquoise water you’ll see in Bali. This place is an absolute gem and should be on everyone’s what to do in Uluwatu list.

Nyang Nyang Beach is located on the far southern edge of the Bukit Peninsula beyond Uluwatu Temple. You’ll drive about 5 minutes east from the latter before reaching the Nyang Nyang turnoff on the right. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see a parking lot with a local warung and some construction on each side.

After a 10-minute or so walk down a dirt road ( wear good shoes ), you should arrive at the beach and be greeted by splendor. More surprisingly is that you won’t be greeted by hordes of tourists either! Compared to Bali’s usual attractions, Nyang Nyang is very quiet. Come here, and you’ll have lots of space to lounge and just chill.

  • Watch out for: The makeshift huts on the beach. Perhaps a place to spend the night? (Maybe bring your backpacking tent just in case.)
  • Insider Tip: Don’t stop in the parking lot – you can actually drive a bit more down the road.

4. Surf everywhere

You can’t visit Uluwatu and not consider surfing! The surf in Uluwatu is absolutely legendary and practically put the town on the map in the first place. Even if you’ve never surfed before, you should still consider a lesson or at least watching the pros from a bar while beach hopping.

The surfing in Uluwatu is as diverse as it is epic. The waves come in all shapes and sizes here, from tubes that stretch on like highways to reasonable swells for beginners to behemoths that look like they could swallow the entire island. There’s a wave for everyone in Uluwatu and no one, regardless of their skill level, should feel left out.

Person riding surfboard on teal-colored waves

There are a ton of places to surf in Uluwatu but some do stand out. Suluban Beach gets some pretty gnarly waves and plenty of surfers looking to conquer them. Balangan is a more lowkey spot with some super long pipes. Nyang Nyang is a bit of a hidden gem that gets very few crowds and some excellent surfing conditions.

These are only a handful of the surfing locations in Uluwatu. Visit yourself and find your own favorite spot!

  • Watch out for: Coral reefs – they’re everywhere around Bali and can hurt a lot.
  • Insider Tip: Get the latest Uluwatu surf reports at magicseaweed.com !

5. Drop (not literally) by Karang Boma Cliff

The Karang Boma Cliff is a fantastic viewpoint. It offers a similar vista to the one at Uluwatu Temple but receives nowhere near as many visitors. This means one can actually enjoy this place without having to push and shove (which isn’t a good idea near cliffs anyways).

Karang Boma is located in between Uluwatu Temple and Nyang Nyang Beach. The marker for the turnoff is pretty basic – pretty much a laminated sign that’s way too faded – so keep your eyes open. Once you hit the turn off, it’s about a 5 minute drive to the cliff.

Aerial view of Karang Boma Cliff with waves on beach

Bare in mind that some entrepreneurial locals have set up a toll gate of sorts before the viewpoint. They’ll ask you for 5,000 rupiah to continue down the road and there doesn’t seem to be a way around. In my experience, the locals are only there later in the day though when it’s busier. If you arrive at sunrise or early in the morning, you may get there before anyone sees you.

  • Watch out for: The edge because there’s practically no fences or protection.
  • Insider Tip: There are some pretty cool photo opportunities here so bring that camera you’ve been traveling with as well.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

6. Have a drink at Blue Point Beach

It may be touristy as hell but I can’t resist going to the bars at Blue Point first thing when I arrive in Uluwatu. I grab a beer, find a good spot near the edge of the bar, and watch the surfers catch some waves as the sun sets. It’s one of the most timeless things to do in Uluwatu, and I always recommend that everyone do it at least once on a backpacking trip to Bali.

Just to be clear: when I use the term “Blue Point,” I am referring to the general area around Single Fin . Whilst Blue Point is the unofficial name for this place, Single Fin is probably the most well-known establishment around, not to mention one of the most famous beach clubs in Uluwatu.

Sunlight coming through between rocks at Blue Point

That being said, I usually don’t like hanging around Single Fin. It’s overpriced and there are plenty more bars down the cliffs that offer better views and prices. Pick any one of them and you’ll be sitting pretty.

If you’re feeling up to it, you should consider walking all the way down the steps to Suluban Beach . Located on the other side of an epic sea cave, Suluban is super intimate and a popular place at sunset. When the water’s low, you can also walk pretty far out into some tide pools!

  • Watch out for: The tides as Suluban Beach may not be accessible at when the water is high.
  • Insider Tip: Park back on Jalan Pantai Padang-Padang and walk to Blue Point to avoid paying for parking.

7. Make a road trip to Melasti Beach or Green Bowl

Visiting Uluwatu can sometimes be a bit hectic these days. No longer the remote, undiscovered corner of Bali, Uluwatu is becoming more developed and, as such, more crowded with people.

If you want to get away from the center of attention in Uluwatu, then consider driving to the far southern shores of the Bukit Peninsula. Aside from finding well-known oasi like Sundays Beach Club and Karma Beach Club , you’ll find some very nice beaches to go with them.

People walking along the shoreline at Melasti Beach in uluwatu

Green Bowl is probably one of the quietest beaches near Uluwatu. Due to its remote location, hardly anyone visits here aside from a couple of surfers or beach bums. Green Bowl Beach is small but if you’re looking for peace this is the place.

Melasti Beach is a relatively new development but is already grabbing people’s attention. The water here is a magnificent blue and the white cliff behind the beach are something to behold. Unlike Green Bowl Beach, there are actually some beach bars and restaurants at Melasti so you won’t have to worry about packing a lunch.

  • Watch out for: The lack of development at Green Bowl. There are no beach chairs, bean bags, bars, toilets, anything here.
  • Insider Tip: It’s possible to visit Melasti, Green Bowl, and maybe a beach club all in one day. Make it an epic road trip!

8. Join the hordes at Suka Espresso

Suka Espresso is a local legend that usually tops the lists of “Best Cafes in Uluwatu.” The hype is real too: the breakfast (served until 3pm!) is exceptionally good here. Suka uses very high quality ingredients and offers arguably some of the best food in Uluwatu and Bali.

Problem is the lines can be ridiculously long here. We’re talking brunch lines at noon in Portland, Oregon long. (For those who have never visited Portland, people go absolutely nuts for brunch in this town; I don’t make this comparison lightly.)

Espresso drink in teal cup and saucer at Suka Espresso

If you want to get a table at Suka, you absolutely need to arrive early in the morning; I mean early. If you’re planning on arriving at 9am, then you’re already too late. Get there at 7:30am the moment the doors open – it’s the only way my friends.

  • Watch out for: The Banana Brulee Hotcakes, which look divine but are probably a major cause of diabetes.
  • Insider Tip: Suka Espresso also serves lunch/dinner and these aren’t slouches either.

9. Or have a more peaceful breakfast at Land’s End

If you want to have a nice, peaceful breakfast and don’t want to deal with the madness at Suka Espresso, there are other places to eat in Uluwatu. One of my favorite breakfast cafes in town is Land’s End . This small, unassuming cafe is easily overlooked but totally worth checking out.

Land’s End Cafe is simple: a cashier’s counter, a bathroom, a kitchen, and some wooden tables. The dishes on offer don’t seem that interesting either at first: just the usual fair of smoothie bowls, breakfast burritos, and espresso drinks.

a large light pink smoothie bowl with bananas granola pineapples and peanut butter in a clear glass bowl on top of a wooden table

But what Land’s End lacks in diversity they make up for in quality. The coffee is perfectly prepared, the food is made with 100% organic ingredients (and love), and the staff is very warm. To be honest, you couldn’t ask for much more out of a restaurant in Uluwatu.

  • Watch out for: The homemade truffles that come with coffee.
  • Insider Tip: Glutards will enjoy this place as it has a respectable gluten-free menu.

10. Spend the afternoon (or all day) at an extravagant beach club

It just wouldn’t be an  epic Bali itinerary without visiting some sort of beach club, right? Luckily, Uluwatu has plenty of these and most of them are worth spending the day (and night) at.

There are some staples to Uluwatu’s beach club scene. They are:

  • Ulu Cliffhouse: A hot-spot in Bali that is usually the center of conversations. Big, shiny, and often the first club in Uluwatu that everyone goes to.
  • Sundays Beach Club: A staple of the beach club scene with a long beach, elegant food, and languid vibes. A good place to run away to without leaving any luxuries behind.
  • Karma Beach Club: A very secluded beach club hidden away below the cliffs and through the jungle. It actually requires a cable car to get to. It’s a pretty small space too, which means you’ll need to arrive early to get a chair.

11. Discover the secret Pantai Cemongkak

Pantai Cemongkak is one of my favorite beaches in Uluwatu for several reasons:

  • It’s strikingly beautiful: The crystal-clear water and white cliffs make it look like a remote Greek cove.
  • It’s close to Bingin Beach and Dreamland Beach: In fact, it’s right in-between the two and both are 5-10 minutes walk away.
  • It’s absolutely deserted: Seriously, I never see anyone here aside from a fisherman or two.

Shoreline view of Bingin Beach and the nearby cliffs

So next time you’re visiting Pantai Bingin or Dreamland Beach, consider making a slight detour to Pantai Cemongkak. You’ll be shocked at how empty it is and, at the same time, how pretty the beach is.

  • Watch out for: The sun – there’s not much shelter here aside from some ruined beach shacks.
  • Insider Tip: Since there is no development at Cemongkak, be sure to eat in Dreamland or Bingin Beach before.

12. See a cultural show at Garuda Vishnu Kencana Park

Garuda Visha Kencana is a cultural park that is mostly known for the gigantic statue that stands in the middle of it. The colossus, which stands 120 meters high, depicts the Hindu god Vishnu riding his trusty steed, the winged beast Garuda. (Fun fact: the Gardu-Vishnu is higher than the Statue of Liberty.)

The cultural park also holds daily cultural shows for visitors. These shows are careful recreations of traditional Balinese dances and performances, like the Barong Dance , and usually include 20 or more performers. For those who are interested in Balinese dance, which is pretty cool actually, attending one of these is a great opportunity.

Dancers in traditional Balinese costumes for the Barong Dance

Admittedly, there isn’t a whole lot else to do in Garuda Vishnu Kencana. When I visited, I got the feeling that the park was only halfway done. There were times when I felt like the staff just didn’t have their heart in it as well.

  • Watch out for: the parades – there’s usually a couple of small ones per day.
  • Insider Tip: if you just want to see the statue, don’t bother entering the park – you can see easily from outside.

13. Chill out at Padang Padang Beach

Pantai Padang Padang is one of the most beloved beaches in Uluwatu that attracts all kinds of travelers. Whilst hanging out here, I saw families playing with their kids, Brazilians playing fresco , and backpackers sharing beers; all in one place. Padang Padang is just an easy beach to visit, plain and simple.

Long, teal boat paddling out of Padang Padang with swimmers in the water

Padang Padang Beach is easy to get for that matter as well. It’s located right off the main road and you can actually see the beach itself from a bridge overhead. There’s a dedicated parking lot across the street from the entrance that charges a reasonable 5,000 rupiah.

Note that you will have to pay another 10,000 rupiah to enter the beach itself.

  • Watch out for: The satay – make sure it’s cooked thoroughly and correctly.
  • Insider Tip: Head to nearby white sand Thomas Beach if you want a little space. It’s larger and usually pretty calm.

14. Find the sea cave at Pantai Tegal Wangi

There is a pretty cool sea cave located at Pantai Tegal Wangi that makes for some great photos. At sunset, the cave is particularly beautiful as the westward-facing cave lights up wonderfully at this time. For Instagrammers in Bali, this is a great spot to drop by and a welcome break from the usual tree swings and temple settings ( don’t be these people please ).

Pantai Tegal Wangi is located on the edge of Uluwatu and is actually quite close to Jimbaran. It’s a bit out of the way and I suggest that trippers use some sort of navigation app like Maps.Me or Google Maps to get there.

Fishermen standing on a small mound of rocks near Pantai Tegal Wangi cave

Once you arrive at Pantai Tegal Wangi, go for a mission to find the sea cave! (I won’t spoil it for you ;)) Feel free to take a break whenever and enjoy the scenery as well. Tegal Wangi is a very popular place to catch the sunset and having a Bintang here at the end of the day is just as rewarding as finding that cave.

  • Watch out for: The small temple complex that marks the entrance of the beach. It’s called Pura Segara.
  • Insider Tip: bring beer with you if you want one because the vendors at Tegal Wangi usually run out fast.

15. Head to Jimbaran for fresh seafood

Uluwatu is technically right next to the Indian Ocean (no shit Ralph…) but that doesn’t mean it has the best catches of the day. Whilst there is some fresh seafood caught around Uluwatu, most of it actually comes from neighboring Jimbaran.

A plate of Jimbaran-caught fish covered in colorful peppers and two different sauces next to the plate

Jimbaran, located north of Uluwatu, is famous for its seafood restaurants. A lot of people actually travel to Jimbaran from all over Bali just to eat fresh fish . The quality of the catch is that good and you can find just about anything here, from grilled mahi-mahi to sushi to bakar (fried).

So if you really want the best fish in Uluwatu, you shouldn’t necessarily stay in town. Take the short trip north to Jimbaran and really treat yourself.

  • Watch out for: Fresh red snapper – the most delicious of fish in the ocean.

16. Join a CrossFit Class at Bali Training Centre

Even on vacation, you don’t wanna miss out on getting your workout in. In Uluwatu, Bali Training Centre is a beautiful and tropical gym offering all types of classes, personal training sessions and body-building options.

Filled with high-quality equipment, and led by excellent, experienced trainers, it is one of the best places to get your pump on in Uluwatu.

17. Go to some local restaurants outside Uluwatu

The neighborhoods surrounding Uluwatu usually don’t get much attention. They’re pretty raw compared to Uluwatu and usually the latter looks pampered in comparison to the former. Most people just make a b-line through these areas in search of surf and beach clubs.

But there are some very good reasons to actually make an excursion out into the nether-regions of Uluwatu. For one, the food you find outside of the touristy areas is actually very good and often very inexpensive. Gone are the boutique cafes and delis; say hello to the warung culture.

Nasi Campur style buffet in a warung in Indonesia

Indonesian Warungs are local food stalls, usually run by a family. They’re about as close to a mom n’ pop diner as you’re going to get and serve up some mean food. One of my favorites when I visit Uluwatu is a little place called Bakso Solo Baru . It’s a literal hole in the wall but they make bomb spicy chicken.

So be adventurous and try some food outside your comfort zone. Some may be surprised to know there is more to Balinese cooking than smoothie bowls and satay.

  • Watch out for: The crowds – lots of people next to a stand usually means good food.
  • Insider Tip: Not all street food is necessarily safe. Go easy at first and pick your location wisely.

When to Travel to Uluwatu

Uluwatu has a wonderful climate – not too hot, and never too cold . It is located on one of the most luxurious and beautiful islands in the world after all, one that is famous for its regularly amazing weather.

Winters in Uluwatu (May-October) are the dry season and the best time to visit Bali in general. Temperatures around this time are lower than usual but still very comfortable at around 28 Celsius or 82 Fahrenheit. Rain is very infrequent during these months, which means that there can be water shortages. Please be mindful of your water consumption in Uluwatu while visiting.

The surf in Uluwatu is also best during the dry winter months. During this time, the waves reach their legendary heights, which means the surfers will be out in droves.

Rows of pink beach umbrellas on a sunny day at Dreamland Beach in Uluwatu

Summers in Uluwatu (November-April) are hotter and definitely more rainy than winter. Although Uluwatu gets a fair bit of rain (it is still tropical) it receives far less precipitation than the rest of the island. Its location on the arid Bukit Peninsula makes it drier than other places in Bali.

Still, when I visited in mid-March it heavily rained 3/4 days which definitely wasn’t ideal. The conditions were so bad that the famous Thomas Beach I’d seen in pictures was filled with trash and the water was far from turquoise blue.

If you wanted to avoid the crowds, you will have to stick to the (short) shoulder seasons. April and October are good months as there usually isn’t too many people or high prices.

How to Travel to Uluwatu

Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula are located on the far southern tip of the island. Outside of the far north, traveling to Uluwatu from most of Bali’s top destinations should be painless. Granted, you’ll have to deal with Bali’s torturous traffic but this comes with the territory.

Most people travel to Uluwatu by private car or taxi. By far, these are the most convenient form of transport in Bali because they are relatively quick and affordable.

A busy intersection in Canggu in Bali. Multiple lanes of bikes are crossing paths.

You can arrange a private transfer to Uluwatu in many ways. You can either have your previous accommodation in Bali arrange one for you, use a ride-share app like Grab or Gojek or hail a taxi (the worst choice).

If you have your own form of transport i.e. a scooter or car than just remember to be careful when driving to Uluwatu. Traffic can be very bad near the Jimbaran area, especially around 5 pm when everyone is heading to Uluwatu Temple for the sunset.

To get a better idea of how long it takes and how much it costs to arrive in Uluwatu, refer below to the following estimates:

  • Kuta to Uluwatu: 30 minutes – 100,000 rupiah / $7
  • Ngurah Rai Airport to Uluwatu : 30 minutes – 100,000 rupiah / $7
  • Sanur to Uluwatu: 45 minutes – 150,000 rupiah / $10
  • Canggu to Uluwatu: 1 hour – 200,000 rupiah / $14
  • Ubud to Uluwatu: 1.5 hours – 250,000 rupiah / $18
  • Padang Bai to Uluwatu: 1.5 hours – 250,000 rupiah / $18
  • Amed to Uluwatu: 2.5 hours – 400,000 rupiah / $28

Traveling from Uluwatu to either Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida is very easy! Just head to Sanur and catch one of the many ferries. You can buy tickets ahead of time with Direct Ferry .

How to Get Around Uluwatu

There is really only one way to get around Uluwatu and that’s by scooter. Having your own scooter will allow you the most freedom for the least amount of money. You will need to be mindful of the road as always, but with the usual precautions, you’ll get to experience Uluwatu to the fullest.

You can usually rent a scooter in Uluwatu at your hotel. The proprietors usually have some sort of contact – be it a business or just a local with a bike – and should be able to organize something for you.

Three motor scooters with passengers driving down a dirt road with palm trees in the background

If your hotel or villa in Uluwatu should strike out in arranging a scooter, then there are plenty of independent rental agencies around town. Just go for a walk and start looking. Don’t pay anything over 80,000 rupiah per day.

It must be said though that riding a scooter in Uluwatu is just as dangerous as anywhere else in Bali. Please be smart and drive safely while you’re visiting. This means:

  • ALWAYS wear your helmet.
  • Never drink and drive.
  • Don’t take blind corners too fast.
  • Being mindful of road conditions and debris.
  • Driving aggressively or recklessly.

If you don’t want to ride a scooter, there are some more options of getting around Uluwatu but they aren’t as convenient. You could walk but the distances will be enormous. Or you could hire a private driver but I only recommend this if you’re willing to spend the extra $25-$30 per day.

Also, be aware that whilst ride-shares are easy to organize to Uluwatu they are not easy to organize in Uluwatu. For one reason or another, the area is often devoid of Gojecks or Grabs, which makes them an unreliable form of transport.

The Best Bars and Restaurants in Uluwatu

When I first visited Uluwatu, the clubs were just being built; ramshackle beach shacks and bars were the overwhelming majority of “business.”

Nowadays, there are all kinds of cafes and restaurants in Uluwatu. Fancy bistros, quaint cafes, international delicatessens, local warungs; all of these can be found in abundance at the moment.

Aerial view of a Beach Club in Uluwatu with the ocean and sunset in the background

I find Uluwatu’s restaurant scene to be more low key than those in Seminyak or Nusa Dua. Chalk it up to the chronically chilled-out surfer culture if you’d like but, for whatever reason, you shouldn’t have to dress up or look the nines if you want a good meal.

That being said, there are definitely some classy joints here. The opulent beach clubs in Uluwatu , like Sunday’s Beach Club, Ulu Cliffhouse, and OMNIA, are prime examples of how exclusive Uluwatu’s nightlife can be. But getting into these just requires a little extra money and time in front of the mirror.

To give you an idea of where to eat and drink in Uluwatu here are some of our favorite establishments:

  • Land’s End Cafe – best breakfast in Uluwatu
  • Suka Espresso – best coffee in Uluwatu
  • Ulu Cliffhouse – best nightlife in Uluwatu
  • Aunty Warung – best local food in Uluwatu
  • El Kabron – fanciest meal in Uluwatu
  • Bingin Bagus Seafood BBQ – best beach food in Uluwatu
  • Sushi Ulu Wasabi – cheap and high quality sushi in Uluwatu

Here are some quick answers to common questions about what to do and see in Uluwatu.

What are the top things to do in Uluwatu?

Spend the day at Nyang Nyang , the best beach in Uluwatu maybe even the whole of Bali. The white sand and turquoise waters are absolute paradise!

What are some things to do in Uluwatu at night?

Explore the diverse nightlife of Uluwatu. From exclusive beach clubs, to local Warungs – it has it all. I love a good cliff sunset, or one of the cafes on Bingin Beach.

What are some fun things to do in Uluwatu?

So many! After you’ve seen Uluwatu Temple at sunset then stick around for a unique Kecak Fire Dance performance, it’s freaking insane!

What is there to do in Uluwatu for the day?

Mate, there’s too much! Beach hop from Uluwatu Beach, to Hidden Beach and beyond, hang at the cliffs at sunset, check out the Uluwatu Monkey Temple (aka Pura Luhur Uluwatu), or hit up the bars, restaurants, and clubs. There’s also heaps of culture and it’s sick for surfing as well!

Get Insured Before Traveling to Uluwatu

Make sure you’ve got good travel insurance checked off your packing list!

And there you have it – all the deets on the very best attractions in Uluwatu!

I fell hard and fast for this chill lil’ surf town, and while it’s definitely expanded a lot since it was my home base, it’s still one of the most relaxed places to visit in Bali.

Home to the island’s very best beaches, wave breaks that will even have experienced surfers in awe, and plenty of iconic bars and cafes, it doesn’t surprise me that so many travelers fall in love with the place.

With so many stretches of sand, cultural activities, and other spots to hit up, I’d plan to spend at least 3 days on Bali’s southern tip. Let me know which Ulu thing to do ends up being your favorite!

11 Top Things To Do in Uluwatu, Bali [With Map]

Last Updated on July 23, 2024

uluwatu tourist spot

Emily Tarrier

Hi, I’m Emily, a full-time travel writer from London who has spent almost 2 years exploring every corner of the beautiful island of Bali! I have a background in Cultural Anthropology and love unique cultural experiences, hunting out hidden gems, and eating great food. All photos on this blog are taken by us.

Sitting along the southwest coast of the Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu is the dreamy postcard beach destination that most people imagine when they picture Bali.

Home to many of the island’s most world-class surf breaks and luxurious beach clubs, Uluwatu is the ideal spot for both relaxation and adventure seekers alike.

So if you’re wondering what to do in Uluwatu, here’s a list of our favourite activities.

Top Things To Do

1. relax on uluwatu’s beautiful beaches.

uluwatu tourist spot

Most people would agree that Uluwatu is home to the majority of mainland Bali’s most beautiful beaches, hidden behind towering limestone cliffs and leading out to vibrant turquoise waters. Here are some we recommend visiting:

Melasti Beach – Good for swimming

uluwatu tourist spot

Sitting at the southernmost point of Bali, Melasti is a well-developed stretch of soft white sand beach. At high tide, there’s room to paddle and swim in the shallow azure waters between the beach and the breaking waves.

Toilets, showers, and changing rooms are all available for a small donation. There’s a mix of small beachside warungs and large beach clubs along the coastline.

Melasti is one of Uluwatu’s more popular beaches, but there’s enough room along the spacious 2km stretch that it never feels too crowded.

Nyang Nyang – Untouched haven

uluwatu tourist spot

Nyang Nyang is an untouched stretch of dreamy white sand beach. It’s much quieter than others in the area, likely because it can only be reached via a windy path down the cliffside.

Bikes can drive down to the beach, but the steep incline is only suitable for more experienced riders. For most people, it’s best to park at the top and walk down (takes 15 mins).

Nyang Nyang is also where you’ll find the unique Bubble Hotel (more below).

Uluwatu/Suluban Beach – Something unique

uluwatu tourist spot

Uluwatu Beach is a small secluded beach surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. You’ll need to climb down a steep staircase into the sheltered bay to reach the beach.

The real draw is the secret section called Suluban Beach which can only be accessed by ducking through a sea cave at low tide.

Thomas Beach – Quiet beach day

uluwatu tourist spot

This long, narrow beach lined with sunbeds flies somewhat under the radar making it perfect for a relaxing beach day away from the crowds. There’s a short but steep walk down to Thomas Beach , but it’s worth it and there’s no charge.

Dreamland Beach – great sunset spot

uluwatu tourist spot

Our go-to beach when we visit Uluwatu. Dreamland Beach is easily accessible, with scooter parking just a few metres from the sand and is well-equipped for tourists.

It’s one of the few west-facing beaches in Uluwatu making it great for watching the sunset over the ocean each evening. Many people climb up the neighbouring cliff (known as Dreamland Cliff) for sunset. But we prefer to grab a drink from the restaurant at the back of the beach.

Should You Visit Padang Padang Beach?

Padang Padang is one of Bali’s most famous beaches thanks to its appearance in the 2010 movie Eat Pray Love. But a victim of its own success, the tiny beach gets overcrowded very easily. Unless you’re a die-hard Julia Roberts fan or a keen surfer, we suggest you skip it.

🚕 Hire a Private Driver

Private drivers are the best way to get around in Bali. The safest ways to book are through your hotel, a friend’s recommendations, or this private driver booking form.

2. Enjoy the world-class surf scene

uluwatu tourist spot

Uluwatu is also one of Bali’s top surfing destinations, with consistent and powerful waves that are best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers rather than complete beginners.

Most of Uluwatu’s top surf breaks are located along the western coast of the Bukit peninsular. The most famous surf spots are:

3. Go kayaking at Pandawa Beach

uluwatu tourist spot

If surfing in Uluwatu isn’t for you, head a little further along the coast to Pandawa Beach for some more peaceful paddle sports instead.

The picturesque white sand beach hides behind a wall of towering limestone cliffs, yet is easy to reach thanks to a road that cuts through the rockface.

Numerous cafes and shops along the beach rent out canoes and kayaks. You can expect to pay around 50,000 IDR per hour for a single or 100,000 IDR for a double.

There’s plenty of room to paddle up and down the 1km long stretch of crystal-clear waters. Just try not to go too far out or you’ll end up hitting the surf break and maybe even a rogue surfer.

The entrance fee for Pandawa Beach is 15,000 IDR per person. There’s an additional 5,000 IDR fee for car parking or 2,000 IDR for scooter parking.

4. Check out the beach clubs

uluwatu tourist spot

There’s certainly no shortage of luxurious beach clubs in Uluwatu, from more peaceful beachfront bars to modern megaclubs perched on the cliff edge.

Whether you’re looking for a day of quiet relaxation by the water or a place to party the night away overlooking the ocean, Uluwatu has something to suit everyone.

Sundays Beach Club

uluwatu tourist spot

Located on a private stretch of sand just along the coast from popular Melasti Beach, Sundays is one of our favourite beach clubs in Uluwatu and a great spot for a relaxing beach day with family or friends.

The beautiful beachside club has plenty of seating right on the sand, as well as complimentary water sports, nightly beach bonfires, live music on weekends, and a fantastic menu of food and drinks.

The club sits within a peaceful private bay partially secluded by towering limestone cliffs. You can reach the beach from the clifftop via its famous cable car.

Savaya, Bali

uluwatu tourist spot

Sitting on a cliff edge with amazing panoramic views over the ocean from its wrap-around infinity pool, Savaya is perhaps Uluwatu’s most famous and luxurious beach club.

The modern and stylish megaclub is known for its huge late-night parties and for hosting some of the world’s biggest DJs and artists.

In recent years, Savaya has seen the likes of Fisher, Diplo, Calvin Harris, Jason Derulo, Kygo, Rüfüs Dü Sol, and many others have graced its central stage.

Check the online schedule to see who’s playing in the coming months and make sure to book your tickets in advance. The biggest nights at Savaya often sell out completely.

In an otherwise peaceful area of the Bukit Peninsula,  El Kabron  is a lively beach club perched on the clifftop above Dreamland Beach.

El Kabron is best known for its elaborate sunset pool parties, with live music including incredible live sax and trumpet performances. Watch the videos on  their Instagram .

5. Watch a movie under the stars at Ulu Cliffhouse

uluwatu tourist spot

Ulu Cliffhouse is another of Uluwatu’s most luxurious all-day beach clubs. Perched on a clifftop overlooking the Indian Ocean, the high-end club is a fantastic spot to enjoy lunch with a view, watch the sunset from the infinity pool, or party at the downstairs ocean deck.

But our favourite thing to do at Ulu Cliffhouse is to attend their Tuesday night cinema nights, with a different movie playing under the stars at the clifftop bar each week.

To watch the movie, you’ll need to pre-book a daybed. Each day bed has a 500,000 IDR minimum spend and can seat 2 or 3 people. You can order food and drinks which are delivered directly to your bed during the movie.

6. Party all night at Single Fins

uluwatu tourist spot

Sitting above Suluban Beach and overlooking the famous Ulu surf break, Single Fins is a laid-back beach club by day and one of Uluwatu’s best party spots by night.

The clifftop club is most famous for its Sunday Sessions, one of the biggest weekly parties in Uluwatu. Live music and international DJs draw in huge crowds of locals and tourists and keep the party going until the early hours.

Once the party finishes at Single Fins, most people move just along the road to a mini-mart ( here ) with large speakers where you can dance in the streets until the sun comes up. Parting at a mini-mart is more fun than it sounds, trust us!

Single Fins also hosts a slightly more laid-back party every Wednesday night. The rest of the week, it’s a great spot to enjoy the sunset over the ocean with a beer or coconut.

uluwatu tourist spot

We’re also big fans of the Italian restaurant just below Single Fins, La Terrazza . The large terrace is the perfect spot to grab a pizza and drink for sunset before heading to the party.

7. Shop at Uluwatu’s weekend markets

uluwatu tourist spot

If you can draw yourself away from Ulu’s beautiful beaches for an hour or two, head to Uluwatu’s weekend market to pick up some locally produced souvenirs.

The Uluwatu Artisans Market pops up in two different locations each weekend. On Saturdays, you’ll find the market at Seed Bingin , a French-Asian fusion restaurant set within a large garden in northern Uluwatu. While on Sundays the market moves down to Hatch , a lively restaurant and late-night bar close to Padang Padang.

The market sells a range of handcrafted goods made by local artisans, including clothes, jewellery, homeware, crafts, and lots more. You’ll often find live music, street food stalls, and kid’s activities at the markets too.

8. See the Kecak Fire Dance at Uluwatu Temple

uluwatu tourist spot

The Kecak fire dance is a traditional Balinese dance known for its dramatic choreography and use of fire.

The unique dance is performed in several locations around Bali, but the most famous has to be the stunning backdrop of Uluwatu Temple perched on cliffs overlooking the ocean.

Kecak is performed by a huge chorus of 50-60 men who chant “cak-cak-cak” throughout. Starting at dusk, the performance tells stories from the Hindu epic, Ramayana, focusing on Prince Rama’s quest to rescue Sita.

Once the sun sets, the dance culminates in a fiery climax where bamboo torches are lit, illuminating the temple in an enchanting orange glow.

How authentic is Kecak dance? Kecak was only created in the 1930s and is predominantly performed as a form of entertainment for tourists. However, it does originate from an ancient Balinese ritual called “Sanghyang”, in which dancers fall into a trance to repel evil spirits and ward off danger.

uluwatu tourist spot

The show lasts for one hour. You’ll need to cover your knees when entering the temple – sarongs are provided at the door.

Arrive a little early so you can see Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu), one of Bali’s nine directional temples. It’s not huge so 30 minutes is plenty to explore. Careful when bringing your own food or drinks as there are some rather cheeky monkeys running around.

If the Kecak show at Uluwatu Temple is fully booked during your visit, you can also now see the same show on nearby Melasti Beach.

9. Stay at the Bubble Hotel

uluwatu tourist spot

Hidden along secluded Nyang Nyang Beach, the Bubble Hotel is one of the coolest places we’ve stayed in Bali – earning it its place on this list of the best things to do in Uluwatu.

The unique little hotel features just five air-conned bubble rooms (see photos), each set within its own private beachfront garden with a seating area, infinity pool, swing, and netted terrace overlooking the ocean.

uluwatu tourist spot

All guests receive a private transfer (by bike) down the cliff to reach the tucked-away accommodation. Breakfast can be delivered directly to your bubble and even served on a floating tray in the pool.

Other add-ons including a flower bath, a romantic ocean-front dinner, or an evening bonfire and marshmallows are available to add to your booking.

uluwatu tourist spot

We had the most incredible stay at the Bubble Hotel and would definitely consider it one of our favourite Bali experiences. From the unique accommodation and unbeatable beachfront location to the friendly and attentive staff, we can’t fault it!

The Bubble Hotel is perfect for a romantic date night or special occasion. Plus the unusual rooms are reasonably affordable compared to many other luxury resorts in Uluwatu.

10. Visit the GWK Culture Park

uluwatu tourist spot

While the GWK Culture Park isn’t technically in Uluwatu itself, it does sit nearby in the very center of the Bukit Peninsula. You’ll need to pass the park to reach Uluwatu, so we thought we’d include it anyway.

The GWK Cultural Park is one of Bali’s biggest cultural attractions . It’s home to the iconic Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue, which at 121-meters tall (including the base) is the tallest statue in Indonesia and one of the tallest in the world.

The huge statue is devoted to the Hindu god Vishnu, and his mount, Garuda, the mythical bird who became his companion.

In the base is a free museum explaining the statue’s meaning and the 28-year construction process. For an extra fee, you can take an elevator up to the 23 rd floor and enjoy a 360 view across southern Bali. Don’t forget to walk across the glass floor if you dare.

The statue sits within a 60-hectare cultural park where you can learn all about Balinese culture through its museum, amphitheatre, art/sculptures, and regular cultural performances (including a Kecak dance each evening at sunset).

You can wander around the large park on foot or hire a segway or bike to explore. Expect to spend at least a couple of hours in the park. There’s a small food court and some shops and cafes on-site too.

Book Tickets: GWK Cultural Park – online tickets are cheaper and you’ll avoid standing in line!

11. Paraglide over the Bukit Peninsula

uluwatu tourist spot

The tall cliffs and picturesque views of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula make it an ideal destination for paragliding. Although several launch sites can be found around the coast, most beginner paragliding experiences take off near Timbis Beach.

You’ll be in the air for around 10 minutes where you can enjoy spectacular views of the turquoise blue waters and white sands below.

This is a tandem adventure so you’ll be assisted by an experienced paragliding instructor who’ll take charge of all the technical parts and ensure the experience is captured on photo/video to re-live later.

uluwatu tourist spot

The Loft – Our favourite all-day dining spot in Uluwatu, with fantastic brunch and coffee options and a great variety of healthy and indulgent lunch and dinner dishes. The holy potato rosti and the halloumi and pumpkin salad are some of our fave dishes in Ulu!

Warung Local – A traditional Balinese warung that’s tailored towards foreigners rather than locals (i.e. less chance of it being too spicy or giving you Bali belly ). Serves a great nasi goreng (fried rice), plus a huge counter full of dishes for a pick-and-choose style meal. Also serves a few Western dishes and some fantastic desserts.

The Cashew Tree – A rustic outdoor restaurant with a variety of Western and Indonesian dishes and live music every Thursday evening. Great for families and big groups.

Pink Coco   Uluwatu  [top pick] – A real-life Barbie’s dreamhouse with quirky all-pink decor, luxurious private rooms, two large pools, an on-site restaurant, and the most welcoming staff. Great location in a walkable area near Padang Padang and many cafes and restaurants.

Things to Know Before Visiting Uluwatu

Everything is fairly spread out.

Unlike more concentrated coastal areas like Canggu and Seminyak, Uluwatu’s many beaches, resorts, and restaurants are well spread out.

Only a few small pockets of the region are walkable. You’ll either need your own bike or to use private drivers/taxis to get around.

The coastline is steep and rugged

Uluwatu is known for its dramatic rugged coastline. However, the region’s steep limestone cliffs can make many of the beaches fairly difficult to reach.

While roads have been built through the rocks to reach a couple of the beaches (Melasti and Pandawa), many require you to leave your bike/car at the top and walk down a steep staircase or pathway to reach them. Research how accessible each beach is before you visit.

Some beaches charge a small fee

The beaches in Uluwatu that are more built up and easiest to reach tend to have a small fee to enter (usually 10,000 – 20,000 IDR per person).

Most beaches only accept cash, so make sure you have enough with you if you’re beach hopping around the region.

The Complete Guide to Uluwatu, Bali – Everything You Need to Know

uluwatu tourist spot

What's In This Guide?

Welcome to Uluwatu – the surfing paradise and beach haven on the southern tip of Bali, Indonesia !

As someone who has spent several days exploring this special area of Bali, I’m excited to provide you with my personal guide to making the most of your own visit to Uluwatu.

Whether you’re a first-timer looking for the top things to see and do, or a returning traveler hoping to uncover some hidden gems, I’ve got you covered. So, let’s get started with the need-to-know basics!

The Best Time to Visit Uluwatu

One of the biggest factors in planning your perfect Uluwatu vacation is when to go. As an equatorial destination, Bali enjoys year-round warm temperatures and sunshine – but the weather does vary slightly throughout the year.

The dry season between April and October is generally considered the best time to visit Uluwatu. During these months you can expect hot, sunny days perfect for surfing, swimming, sunbathing and exploring the temples and landscapes. September and October are the busiest tourist months.

From November to March, the wet season brings increased humidity, daily rain showers and occasionally strong winds. But the weather is still warm and prices are lower, so it can be a good option if you don’t mind a little rain. Surfing conditions also remain excellent.

If you’re flexible with dates, April-June and September-October are ideal times with mostly dry sunny weather, fewer crowds and lower prices before peak season.

Getting to Uluwatu

Uluwatu is located on the southernmost tip of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula. The most common way to reach it is from Bali’s airport in the south.

From Ngurah Rai International Airport: Uluwatu is only 30-60-minute drive south of the airport. The best option is to pre-book a private airport transfer which will take you directly to your hotel. Expect to pay around $15-25 USD each way.

A cheaper option is to take a taxi from the airport arrivals area. Make sure to negotiate the fare first – it should be 400,000 to 500,000 IDR ($25-35 USD).

You can also catch a bus from the airport to Kuta, then transfer to a minibus to Uluwatu. Total journey time is 1-2 hours.

From Kuta/Seminyak: If you’re already in Kuta, Seminyak or elsewhere in south Bali, you can take a taxi or pre-book a driver for the 30-60 minute drive south to Uluwatu.

Minibuses also run regularly during daylight hours for just 50,000 IDR ($3.50 USD) per person each way.

Tip: Be sure to check what part of Uluwatu your hotel is located in, as some areas like Padang Padang Beach are up to 30 mins drive from central Uluwatu.

Hidden Gems in Uluwatu (Only Locals, and Now You, Know Of)

1. visit pura luhur uluwatu, aka the famous uluwatu monkey temple.

Visit Pura Luhur Uluwatu - the famous cliff-top monkey temple

Arguably Bali’s most breathtaking temple with its ocean backdrop and dizzying perch, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is a must-visit if you’re looking for cultural things to do in Uluwatu. Located high above the crashing waves, this sacred temple was built for the spirits of the sea in the 10th century, laced with ancient architecture, intricate sacred sculptures, and… hundreds of monkeys. Yup, this popular spot is also known as the Uluwatu Monkey Temple, famous for its winding cliff-edge pathways guarded by families of mischievous macaques. Prepare for one helluva Instagram opportunity , and read on for why you can’t miss a Kecak Fire Dance here every evening…

2. Bay-watch at Uluwatu’s best beaches

AWESOME THINGS TO DO IN THE BUKIT thomas beach uluwatu

Bali’s black sand beaches in the north are undoubtedly spectacular, but if you’re after picture-perfect powder-white sands with a dramatic backdrop of rugged cliffs and green foliage, then Uluwatu’s best beaches are for you. Check out the famous caves at Suluban Beach in Uluwatu, or soak up the laid-back boho vibes on Bingin Beach . Want to escape the crowds? Hunt for the multitude of hidden bays that fringe this seemingly untouched coastline…

3. Eat at Uluwatu’s best restaurants

the cashew tree - Eat at Uluwatu’s best restaurants

Bali’s food scene once revolved around Seminyak and Canggu , but Uluwatu is fighting its way up the ranks with its ever-growing collection of super-cute cafes, cliff-side fine diners and everything in between. Uluwatu’s best restaurants range from family-friendly hangouts to award-winning culinary greats . Try Drifter for brekkie, The Cashew Tree for lunch, and  Mana Uluwatu for a sunset dinner.

4. Spend the day at a cliff club

Beach club El Kabron dengan kolam renang infinity di pinggir pantai

With its impressive clifftop perch above the crashing Indian Ocean, it comes as no surprise that Uluwatu is where you’ll find a collection of jaw-dropping cliff clubs designed to elevate your island itineraries – literally. Choose from ultra-chic destinations like Savaya , El Kabron Cliff Club and Ulu Cliffhouse , or kick back with a cold beer and cocktail at the easy-breezy cliff-bars that perch above Uluwatu beach.

5. Stay on Bingin Beach and wake up to the waves

Stay on Bingin Beach and wake up to the waves

We’d never say no to a fancy six-star hotel , but there’s nothing quite like staying on Bingin Beach in a humble, bohemian-style boutique abode. Wake up to the sounds of the waves and a salty sea breeze at oceanfront pads like The Sun & Surf Stay , or bring your friends and rent Bingin Cliff House – an island-chic private villa teetering above the sand…

6. Surf Uluwatu’s most famous breaks

Right up there with the world’s very best surfing destinations, Uluwatu’s waves are high priority on every board rider’s itinerary. Novices need not apply – the waves here regularly barrel onto sharp reef with strong currents to boot, attracting pros (and wannabes) from around the world. Learning to surf? Try nearby Jimbaran instead, or try Dreamland during a smaller swell.

7. Watch a Kecak Fire Dance

uluwatu tourist spot

Culture vultures, if you’d like to witness a traditional Balinese performance, then securing a seat at a breathtaking Kecak Dance is an absolute must. Performed by over 100 men in an open-air amphitheatre centred by plumes of fire, expect hypnotic chanting, dancing and dramatic movements under the night’s sky as the tale of a prince and a monkey king unfolds. You can witness this epic production at both Pura Luhur Uluwatu (Uluwatu Temple), or at the GWK Cultural Park , but our fave is at the temple, thanks to the epic cliffside backdrop. Performances start at 6pm every day, but you’ll want to arrive early to secure your ticket and get the best seat.

8. Cruise along the coastline in a local fishing boat

There’s nothing quite like sailing across the open ocean with the salty sea air in your hair and a cold drink in-hand. Well, Uluwatu is one of the best places to do exactly that, aboard a local fishing boat that skirts the cliffy coastline, stopping at breathtaking bays and hidden coves for a refreshing splash. Our fave is the Black Pearl which sets off from nearby Jimbaran at around 4pm and cruises along the coast just in time for sunset . It comes with a box full of cold beer and drinks, and boasts a fleet of local boats in differing sizes. Bookings are essential.

9. Have your “Eat, Pray, Love” moment on Padang Padang Beach

Pantai Padang-Padang - tempat syuting film Eat, Pray, Love

Remember when Julia Roberts fell head-over-flip-flops for a Brazilian hunk in the movie “Eat, Pray, Love”? Well, the beach they frolicked on is no other than Padang Padang Beach in Uluwatu. And chances are, you’ll fall in love here too, not only with the bronzed surfer crowds, but with the calm cove-like waters rolling off the bright white bay, framed by dramatic rock formations and bordered by world-class waves. It’s actually a relatively small beach, so the best time to visit is early in the morning around sunrise when you can see Padang Padang in all its dazzling, natural glory – and before the throng of visitors descend in the hope of spotting Ms Roberts.

10. Explore the Bukit on a scooter

Unlike Seminyak , Canggu or Ubud , The Bukit is spread out over vast terrain, with wide roads and plenty of space to get lost. So to make the most of this sprawling landscape, why not rent a trusty two-wheeled whip and explore The Bukit by scooter? It’s the best way to find hidden bays and undiscovered clifftops – just make sure you wear a helmet and don’t give it a go unless you’ve got an international licence from back home; the roads can seem lawless at times, with bumps and potholes hidden on every bend…

11. Sun & sip at Uluwatu’s best beach clubs

Sundays Beach Club in Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia

While Uluwatu may be famous for its clifftop perches, a handful of world-class beach clubs have made a home on the bright white sands below, accessible via private inclinators and winding roads. Our forever-fave in Uluwatu is the always-stunning Sundays Beach Club , or head slightly out of town to Jimbaran to Sundara Beach Club . Want to tick off as many beach clubs as you can in one day? Head to Melasti Beach where you’ll find four beach clubs on just one stretch of sand.

12. Bliss out with a beach massage

Checking in to a top Bali spa is an absolute must on any island itinerary , but in Uluwatu, you can take your ahh-inducing massages to the oceanfront with a beachside bliss sesh. At almost any Uluwatu beach, you’ll spot local ladies wandering up and down the sands offering $5 – $10 massages directly on your sunbed. Or, you can up the luxe-factor by heading to a fancy ocean-view resort spa .

13. Go luxe at a six-star resort

Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali - Sunset Cabana six star resort

While there are plenty of charming bohemian-style stays on the beaches of Uluwatu, you’ll want to blow the budget for at least one night at one of the Bukit’s swanky hotels. There are ultra-fancy all-villa clifftop resorts like Alila Villas Uluwatu and Bulgari Bali Resort as well as fabulously modern hotels like Radisson Blu Bali Uluwatu . Butlers, tennis courts and jaw-dropping views? Yes puh-lease.

14. Shop Bali-born brands at Uluwatu’s best boutiques

With its laid-back island vibes, it’s no wonder Uluwatu is home to an entire collection of humble boutiques selling all of your beach essentials – most of which are made right here on the island. You’ll find Bali-born bikinis from ELCE and FAE , island-grown ocean apparel at Drifter (Uluwatu’s OG surf hub) and even homewares and island vacay essentials from Cove – a lifestyle boutique that slings boho beachwear, artwork and handcrafted treasures.

15. Dive into Uluwatu’s best infinity pools

Oneeighty beach club di Uluwatu, Bali

If you haven’t dipped into a glittering infinity pool, did you even holiday in Bali? Luckily for us, Uluwatu is home to some of Bali’s very best infinity pools , from the glass-bottom cliff-hanger at Oneeighty cliff club , to the jaw-dropping and world-renowned infinity pool at Alila Villas Uluwatu that appears to defy gravity…

16. Feast on a seafood beach BBQ

With a rich and lively ocean all around, Bali is where it’s at for fresh-from-the-net seafood. Well, right here in Uluwatu you can watch local fishermen head out for the day’s catch, before bringing ocean delicacies back to shore to cook up on a BBQ. While nearby Jimbaran is most famous for its seafood sunsets, you can also settle in to a beach BBQ on Bingin Beach too, and the best bit is, this option comes without the crazy crowds. No need to book either – just head down before sunset and look out for the plastic tables and chairs being set up on the sand.

17. catch golden hour at uluwatu’s best sunset bars.

Spend golden hour at Uluwatu’s best sunset bars | single fins

Thanks to its elevated perch and west-facing vista, Uluwatu is in prime position for epic sunset viewing – and that’s before we mention the world-class sunset bars and creative cocktails that top it all off. For swanky sundrops, perch up at El Kabron, Ulu Cliffhouse or Mana Uluwatu, or hang out with the surfie crews at Single Fin.

18. Get wet with some wild water sports

With its aquatic playgrounds on every shoreline, Uluwatu is a mecca for every kind of water sport under the Bali sun (and sea). Head to Sundays Beach Club for one of the best stand-up paddle boarding spots, or head to neighbouring Nusa Dua to try jet skiing, banana boating and wake boarding. Whatever aquatic path you prefer, water sports in Bali is a must.

19. Stroll around the GWK Cultural Park

uluwatu tourist spot

Officially one of the largest monuments in the world, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue at the 60-hectare GWK Cultural Park has been dubbed the most iconic landmark in Bali. The 122m-tall statue stands higher than both the Statue of Liberty and Christ the Redeemer, and it depicts the Hindu God Wisnu with the mythical eagle, Garuda – the national emblem of Indonesia that symbolises independence. But this Balinese beauty isn’t all you’ll experience at GWK. You can also watch a Kecak Fire Dance here every evening (above), as well as feast on Balinese delicacies , stroll around the gardens, and even catch one of the outdoor annual music festivals.

20. Spend the day poolside at a pool club

We love Uluwatu’s beaches and cliff clubs, but sometimes, all we need is a refreshing pool, a bottle of bubbles, comfy cabanas and plenty of lolling spots to soak up the sun away from the sand and sea. That’s why we love Uluwatu’s pool clubs and lounges. For boutique vibes and fab food, head to Banana Lounge Bali , or for ocean views, try Mana Uluwatu.

21. Sip epic Almond Milk Lattes at BGS

BGS Bali cafe dan restoran untuk sarapan dan makan siang di Uluwatu

If you want to know where both locals and expats hangout pre-beach or post-surf – BGS is it. This surf store meets coffee shop is Uluwatu’s community mecca for great beans, and their Almond Milk Latte comes with a cult following. Creamy and slightly spiced, just one sip and you’ll understand why BGS is an Uluwatu staple. And psst – they now have two locations in the Bukit (one near Dreamland and the other in Uluwatu) as well as one cool Canggu address, too.

22. Party all night at Single Fin Sundays

Think that Sunday is the day for rest? Think again. In Uluwatu, Sunday night is the biggest and most raucous, thanks to the iconic Single Fin cliff bar that kick-started this unholy trend with its cult-like Sunday session. Teetering atop the Uluwatu clifftops overlooking the ocean, there’s no better place to party ‘til the wee hours with live music, big crowds and the OG surf crews mingling amongst the masses. Dancing feet are mandatory.

23. Catch live bands and dance beneath the stars

uluwatu tourist spot

If live music is your jam, you’ll want to head to Ulu Garden . Sitting in the heart of Uluwatu, this breezy tropical garden shifts with the rise and fall of the sun; by day, Ulu Garden is a relaxing and wholesome restaurant, then by night, the amps are plugged in for a more lively atmosphere at night. Armi (the founding musician from Bali’s legendary reggae band, Ulu Roots) manages the agenda, bringing in local talents for cultural talks, traditional Balinese dances, and of course, awesome live music. Check out the weekly schedule on Instagram , then swing by as the stage lights up for a night of dancing beneath the stars…

24. Break a sweat at Uluwatu’s best gyms

Gym junkies, if surfing and beach-hopping doesn’t qualify as your WOD, head to one of Uluwatu’s best gyms . Not only will you get to work out amongst the island’s most babe’n bodies (think tanned surfer dudes and beach babes aplenty), you’ll also get to select from an enormous range of classes, daily schedules and unique workouts. Head to Fondue for Pilates, Bambu Fitness for CrossFit, or Bali Training Centre for group HIIT training (before filling up with a post-workout feed at The Cashew Tree next door!).

25. Downward dog at a yoga studio with a view

morning light | Downward dog at a yoga studio with a view

Ubud may well be the epicentre for getting your “Om” on, but if you like to pair your Asanas with ocean views and open-air shalas, then Uluwatu’s yoga scene is for you. Head to the stunning Morning Light yoga studio at Uluwatu Surf Villas for breezy classes above the waves, or go local with sunset yoga every evening on the cliffs at Balangan Beach. Happy to travel? Here’s our full list of Bali’s best yoga studios across the island.

26. Make and paint ceramics at Jenggala

For both kids and adults, Jenggala in nearby Jimbaran invites you to create your own ceramics, before painting and decorating them and taking them home as great souvenirs or gifts. Anyone can take part in this fun little outing, no matter your age or artistic experience. All ceramics are fired in Jenggala’s on-site kilns, taking four to five days from start to finish, so you’ll need to plan ahead if you want to collect your creation before flying home.

27. Eat like a local at a warung

Warung Local - where to eat in Uluwatu

Not so long ago, Uluwatu’s food scene consisted of mostly local warungs (street-side restaurants) rather than cool cafes and bars. Luckily, many of these traditional eateries still remain, serving up some of the best Indonesian and Balinese dishes around. For just $3 – $4 you can feast on a mountain of delicious, authentic grub including nasi goreng, babi guling , beef rendang , tempe manis and so.much.more. Ask the locals for recommendations on their faves, or try tourist-friendly options like Warung Local, Yeh Yehs, Stop Makan Yuk, and Warung Cempaka.

28. Sway to acoustic sessions at The Cashew Tree

A local favourite, The Cashew Tree in Bingin is one of The Bukit’s most famous cafes (and for good reason, too). But if you’re into live music without the raucous party atmosphere, then head in on a Thursday evening for an unplugged acoustic set from local and visiting bands. Grab a cold beer or cocktail from the bar, mingle with new friends and sway beneath the stars to the smooth sounds of guitar and vocals.

29. Graze all day on a gourmet Sunday brunch

Best brunch in Uluwatu - Segaran Dining Terrace at Jumeirah Bali

Bali’s brunch scene rivals some of the best in the world, and down on the Bukit peninsula you will find some of the island’s very best spreads. In Uluwatu and in neighbouring Nusa Dua and Jimbaran , you can laze your Sunday away with a Champagne banquet, grazing on the island’s best bottomless brunches and free-flow drinks, with ocean views and first-class service included. Check out our top picks for brunch in Bali if you’re not sure where to start.

30. Battle it out with paint-balling

If spending an afternoon running around a makeshift battlefield and firing at your friends sounds like your kinda fun, then head over to the Jimbaran Hill Paintball Arena with its bushes and bunkers. All equipment is provided including overalls to protect your clothes, so you only need to bring your own sneakers – and a keenness for combat!

31. Have a bonfire on the beach

uluwatu tourist spot

For a magical experience beneath the stars, make your way down the cliff face to Sundays Beach Club where a nightly bonfire crackles as the sun sets. Toast marshmallows on the sand and settle in to the comfy beanbags – and while you’re at it, graze on the gourmet menus and stellar cocktails too.

32. Raise your heart rate!

For your hit of holiday adrenaline, sign up to any number of adventure activities in Uluwatu, from Karting Star in Jimbaran (an outdoor go-kart race track with Honda Go-Karts) to paragliding above the cliffs of Pandawa or Nyang Nyang. There’s even places to ride ATVs, with bumpy and winding tracks that take you well off the beaten path.

Uluwatu & Pecatu – Guide & Insights

Being on the western side of the Bukit Peninsula, it’s an amazing place for stunning views of the coastline . Far removed from the wild excitement allows Uluwatu to enjoy the serene side of Bali along the shore. From backpackers who are looking to stay in beach shacks and bungalows to elegantly furnished villas for the modern, luxury traveller. Nevertheless, Uluwatu offers nothing short of breathtaking views .

Most budget accommodations are aimed at surfers and backpackers and are plentiful around the Uluwatu surf break. Some newer and fancier cliff-side hotels are also available with high-end beach resorts for big spending travellers who are able to splurge. Many stunning private villas are also on offer for long and short-term rental. Plenty of these places are situated on gorgeous cliffs designed in bohemian decor for a casual atmosphere overlooking the ocean.

Local food options are relatively limited in this area. Still, some nice little warungs cater mostly to tourists, as well as an increasing number of small restaurants serving high-quality international fare. You’ll find great cafes located nearby the beaches and main streets serving excellent coffee, smoothie bowls, and sandwiches . Excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner will usually cost you a pretty, but still affordable, penny and offer a variety of tastes.

Many beach clubs open till late every weekend. DJs from around the world are usually invited by the bigger clubs during the holiday season. Most of these places will charge you an  entrance fee  or have a  minimum purchase  policy, so you better ask in advance and make a reservation before your arrival.   Age restriction  and  dress code  policies may also be applied.

For the less rowdy bunch, some humble cafes around the Uluwatu surf break have live music shows at night, meanwhile the bars in the area are always busy but tend to close early.

By day, conquer the waves of Uluwatu’s beaches. By night, sleep in a laid-back escape at a boutique resort, where exotic views meet sophistication. Here you can find the best guide to enjoy your luxurious holiday in Uluwatu.

Beaches in Uluwatu are good places for sunbathing and swimming , although sometimes these can be hard to access as they are situated at the bottoms of cliffs. At the north side of the temple, there are several hidden beaches such as  Suluban, Padang-Padang, Bingin, and Dreamland , which is considered the new Kuta beach with pristine sand.

Massive left-hand barrels are routine at surf spots nearby, makes it perfect for intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginner surfers are strongly advised to hire an instructor when surfing in Uluwatu.

Uluwatu is one of the must-visit areas in Bali. It has several iconic attractions you shouldn’t miss on your Bali vacation. Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is a large structure that is almost 1,000 years old . The complex is set on breathtaking limestone cliffs with crashing surf below. It is also home to a large colony of mischievous monkeys, so visitors should watch their loose possessions carefully!

Kecak  dances  are regularly performed here at sunset . At the surf break of Uluwatu, steps and paths lead down to a cave and beach that open onto one of the world’s most famous surf spots. Along the cliffside, warungs, surf and souvenir shops, cafes, and restaurants serving the never-ending crowd of surfers who travel from around the world to give the wave a try , as well as visitors who want to enjoy the view.

The present Uluwatu temple complex was built under the instructions of a Javanese Hindu sage in the 11th century  and later developed by Hindu priests. However, it is said to have been the site of a temple for much longer. It is considered to protect the island of Bali from evil spirits. The surf break of Uluwatu first gained international attention in the  1970s,  and since then has attained almost mythical status as one of the world’s best waves.

Most of the upscale hotels and villas in Uluwatu provide  transportation service  for their guests. Some beach clubs, spas, and restaurants offer return  shuttle service  for their VIP guests. Though be aware, free shuttle is not always applied, some business will charge you extra to get free transport. If you prefer more privacy,  hiring a car rental with a driver  is the perfect choice.  Renting a scooter  from a rental is also a great idea; but only if you have experience to ride two-wheelers.

However, some tourists are prone to accidents when driving under the influence in the dimly lit and narrow roads , so it’s highly recommended to ask for a taxi after a night out instead of driving on their own.

Planning a trip around Bali and searching for the best things to do in Uluwatu in 2023? Well, you’ve come to the right place, as I just spent the last 3 months living in the Uluwatu area – and it’s easily my favorite area of Bali!

There’s this really unique and relaxing vibe down there that is hard to explain, but it aligns perfectly with the laid-back surfing culture you’ll encounter while exploring Uluwatu.  There are so many incredible Uluwatu attractions, restaurants, bars, beaches, beach clubs, spas, and hotspots that you could easily spend weeks soaking up the paradise life.

Renting a moto and exploring all the different beaches is a must, but a personal favorite is being constantly amazed at the jaw-dropping sunsets that occur most nights down in Uluwatu!

With the relaxing atmosphere, incredible dining options, luxurious beach clubs, and so many other amazing things to do in Uluwatu – I guarantee you’ll fall in love with this Bali destination just as much as I have!

While you could easily spend weeks down in Uluwatu, you really can see and do just about everything here in 3-4 days!  If you’ve been there recently, and have any recommendations you think I need to add to this list – shoot me a message on  Instagram !

Things To Do in Uluwatu

Best Places to Stay in Uluwatu

First things first, let’s talk about accommodation.  You really shouldn’t do Uluwatu just as a day-trip, so please stay down there for a few days to explore everything the south of Bali has to offer!

  • Radisson Blu Bali Uluwatu   (HOTEL)  — This is one of my favorite places to stay (location wise) in Uluwatu! The rooms are luxurious but the prices are pretty affordable, and you’ll be right in the center of everything Uluwatu has to offer.
  • Mu Bungalows   (BOUTIQUE HOTEL) —  I’ve actually mentioned visiting this place on my list of Uluwatu things to do, but it’s also an epic place to stay because it has stunning views from an iconic infinity pool. I first discovered this place as a backpacker back in 2014, and it’s a hotel I’ve returned to many times!
  • Alila Villas Uluwatu   (LUXURY HOTEL) —  If you’re not traveling on a budget, then look no further and book your stay at the Alila Villas! Not much else needs to be said, because it’s a total 5* experience that’ll truly blow your mind.
  • Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa   (MARRIOTT PROPERTY) —  If you’re anything like me, you’ll be loyal to a hotel brand, and I personally love Marriott properties. I stayed here at the Renaissance for 6 weeks, and it’s such a gorgeous property with everything you need for a top-notch vacation experience. It’s a bit of a drive from the downtown Uluwatu area, but well worth it. The breakfast buffet is absolutely incredible!
  • SR Hostel Uluwatu   (HOSTEL)  : If you’re a backpacker on a strict budget in Uluwatu, then look no further than staying here at SR Hostel Uluwatu which has a free buffet dinner every night!!  It’s got everything a backpacker wants: a cheap, clean, comfortable place to sleep, a place where you can meet other backpackers.

Getting Around Uluwatu

If you’re new to traveling around Bali, you’ll quickly learn that renting a scooter is the most common form of transport when exploring different parts of the island!

I’d also say that it’s the BEST place to learn how to drive a scooter in Bali. The roads are well maintained, and while Uluwatu is gaining a lot more visitors than in the past, it’s still not as busy/chaotic as Canggu, Kuta, and Ubud.

Whenever I go to Uluwatu I rent a scooter through Uluwatu Scooter Rental – and they’ve always been amazing to deal with. They’ve even organized hotel drop-0ff/ pick-up services, which makes my travels A LOT easier. Their What’s App Number is: +62 857-9232-8771. They offer great bikes and good rates (even better if you rent for a week/month).

If you don’t feel comfortable driving a scooter in Bali (lots of people prefer to hire cars) — one of the best things to do in Uluwatu is hiring a private-driver for an entire day. It’s super affordable (especially if you’re traveling with a partner or group of friends), and all the drivers in Bali are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They can help you organize a full-day itinerary of places to go (temples, secluded beaches, clubs, etc), and you can make the most of your time without worrying about driving.

Top 25 Things To Do In Uluwatu

Alright, let’s break down what all my favorite things there are to do and see in the area! Originally when I wrote this article I only had a Top 10 list, but since returning I’ve updated it to include a TON more. While it may be difficult to visit ALL of these places, it’s definitely worth a shot!

1. Visit Uluwatu Temple & Kecak Fire Dance

Uluwatu Temple Cliffs

Exploring this Balinese Hindu sea temple is one of the most amazing Uluwatu things to do and a must-visit! It’s built on the edge of a 230-foot sea cliff, providing tremendous views from the temple of the iconic Uluwatu cliffs. Most of the temple was constructed by Empu Kuturan during the 11th century, so you can be sure there’s plenty of history to learn about.

Don’t be surprised by the number of Macaque monkeys that inhabit not only the cliffs but the temple itself. It’s best to leave all your jewelry at home as these monkeys have a knack for thievery. The monkeys have also learned the skill of bartering, so if your jewelry does happen to get pinched, offering them some fruit may earn you your belongings back.

The Uluwatu Temple does have a small entrance fee of 50,000 Indonesian Rupiah , but it is worth every penny. Enjoy the scenic strolls along the cliffs, marvel at the beautiful temple, and take pictures of the cute by mischievous monkeys.

Uluwatu Temple

My main travel tip for visiting Uluwatu Temple would be to go during sunset, as you’ll get the chance to witness the traditional Kecak Fire Dance . It involves dancing, chanting, elaborate costumes and loads of excitement.

All this takes place in the temple while the setting sun acts as a beautiful backdrop. It’s a cultural experience in Uluwatu not worth missing out on. I’ve done it a couple different times and always enjoy it! For first-time visitors to Bali/Uluwatu – it will absolutely be a highlight!

Uluwatu Temple Kecak Fire Dance

2. Surfers & Sunsets at Pantai Suluban | Uluwatu Beach

The most popular and lively part of Uluwatu is Suluban Beach (most commonly known as Uluwatu Beach), which offers tons of restaurants, bars, and surf shops.

You simply can’t go to Ulutwau without watching the insanely talented surfers from up above from one of the many bars/restaurants.  You’ll be blown away about the size of the waves, but even more blown away by the beautiful sunsets every night.

There are tons of epic viewpoints to choose from, but probably the most popular spot would be  Single Finn  (see below).

Uluwatu Things to Do

Can you spot the Uluwatu Beach surfers down there…?

3. Sunday Sessions at Single Finn Club & Restaurant

There’s arguably no better place to be on Sunday in Bali than at the legendary  Single Finn in Uluwatu ! It’s located at the very top of Suluban Beach, and is the prime spot to watch the talented surfers from above while destroying a delicious meal and cold beer.

As the night progresses, the music gets louder, and the party vibes are seriously amazing! It’s free entry, there’s always a good turnout, and the music tends to be quality house music!

Travelers in Bali all flock down to Uluwatu for the Sunday night parties at Single Finn, and you’re guaranteed to meet a ton of awesome people. The food and drinks are great (albeit a bit pricey for Bali standards).

Single Finn Sundays Uluwatu

4. The Istana

The Istana quickly became one of my favorite places to visit in Uluwatu, mainly for their Sauna / Steam Room / Infrared Sauna + Cold Plunge spa experience. It’s such a refreshing and rejuvenating experience that always makes me feel like a million bucks.

It’s also at an absolutely stunning location with panoramic Uluwatu cliff views that will leave you speechless. They also offer a ton of other activities like yoga, guided meditation, cryotherapy, massages, and so much more! It’s become a Uluwatu must-visit in the past couple years!

If you’re wondering what to do in Uluwatu for some relaxation – look no further than the Istana!

5. The Cashew Tree

The Cashew Tree is hands down one my favorite places to eat in Uluwatu! It’s located really close to Bingin beach, so you’ll definitely need to swing by for a delicious meal and one of their healthy smoothies. Every time I go to Uluwatu I eat here as much as possible, and my mouth is watering just thinking about their refreshing smoothies, entrees, and desserts.

They’ve been offering weekly specials recently, so go their once and check out what the week’s menu is. Last time I was there I got a delicious curry for only 50K IDR (which is about $3.50 USD).

6. Infinity Pool Sunset Bliss at Mu Bungalows

During my first trip down to Uluwatu – I was lucky enough to have friends tell me about this place.

The infinity pool will blow you away, there’s a jacuzzi perfectly located to watch the sunset, and it’s one of my favorite boutique hotels in Bali!  Every time I take people to Uluwatu, I make sure I take them for an infinity pool sunset swim at Mu Resort!  It’s also a really amazing options if you want a nicer / more luxurious stay in Uluwatu.

For Uluwatu travelers who aren’t staying at Mu Bungalows, they offer Day-Passes – so you can swing by for epic views and sunset swims for a small fee. They’ve also recently opened up a new restaurant there and the food is amazing (especially the pastries).

7. Sunday’s Beach Club

Finns Beach Club - Uluwatu

2023 Update : After two years of being closed, Sunday’s Beach Club is back open!

I was fortunate enough to spend a day at Sunday’s Beach Club during my first trip to Bali, and it completely blew my mind! Yes, it is a bit expensive for Indonesian standards, but it’s worth every penny.  T his private beach is amazing , the food is incredible, and it’s simply a fantastic way to spend a day.  There are dozens of incredible resorts and hotels nearby, there’s also a decent happy hour selection, and  nighttime bonfires.

There is an entrance fee for a day-pass, but that goes towards your food and drink. If you do decide to spend a day here at Finn’s, it might just be your favorite day you spend in Uluwatu! Everything there is honestly just so lush, and they treat their guests super well.

Bring a book, some sunscreen, and relax on the beach while you knock back some cocktails or fresh coconuts!

8. The Edge in Bali

The Edge - Uluwatu, Bali

If you’ve been on Instagram in the last five years, chances are you’ve seen this famous Uluwatu hotspot!

Known for its infinity pool alongside the cliffs of Uluwatu, The Edge in Bali is a hotel/resort, but guests can also come and experience the pool on a day pass as well. While there is an entrance fee (that goes towards the purchase of food) and prices are quite expensive, it’s worth every penny to swim in the pool and admire the epic Uluwatu coastline views.

You could easily spend all day drinking and swimming in the pool to escape the heat, but it’s another place I highly recommend coming here an hour or two before sunset! The way the light hits the coastline during golden hour is magical, and it also makes for a pretty cool photo!

9. Savaya Bali

Savaya Bali - Uluwatu NIghtlife

Simply the coolest and best place for nightlife in Uluwatu & Bali

While there are tons of places to enjoy some drinks and dancing in Uluwatu, I’d say that Savaya Bali is the most beautiful and EPIC club on the entire island. When the biggest DJ’s and artists from around the world come here, THIS is where they play.

It has everything you look for in a club – epic views, sunsets, lights, production, swimming pools, bottle service, tasty food, drinks, and so much more. Check out their parties on the weekends for an incredible experience.

I recently attended two back-to-back nights here at Savaya for Rufus Du Sol & Black Coffee, and partying and dancing while swimming in the infinity pool was an experience I’ll never forget! They are CONSTANTLY organizing parties, so if you plan your trip in advance you can schedule it and attend a wild party.

You can also follow them on Instagram for event details — plus they regularly announce contests/ promos where you can get free tickets/ guest-list. Either way though, if you’re looking for a good night out in Bali – YOU MUST check out Savaya while traveling around Uluwatu.

10. Padang Padang Beach

Padang Padang Beach - Uluwatu

Padang Padang Beach is one of Uluwatu’s most beautiful and iconic beaches, and for good reason! It’s quite spacious (with some places with shade for my fellow fair-skinned folk), and is a fun place to spend a couple hours. It’s one of the quintessential Uluwatu attractions, and you’ll drive by it many times as you explore the Bukit.

Padang Padang Beach is also home to one of the most unique weekly parties in Uluwatu! Bali is one of the best party islands in Southeast-Asia, and you definitely need to check out the weekly event at Padang Padang every Saturday night! While it wasn’t happening when I was living there recently, events are starting to pop back up again!

Padang Padang Beach - Bali Itinerary

11. Uluwatu Beaches

Whether you’re  backpacking through Bali  or enjoying a stay at some of the best luxury resorts in Uluwatu, the best part of your stay should be the gorgeous beaches. Each and every one of them is picture-perfect and should be added to your  Bali Instagram checklist .

Uluwatu Beaches

While some of them are great for swimming, others provide the perfect waves for surfing. But all of them can offer a fantastic beach day with stunning scenery and crystal clear waters.

And having your own moto to is pretty much essential when visiting Uluwatu (or else you’ll be spending a ton of money on taxis/ Gojeks) and wasting a bunch of time. Uluwatu is a fantastic place to learn how to ride a moto though, and renting one should only cost about $5-6 USD per day.

The Best Beaches in Uluwatu include:

  • Suluban Beach
  • Tegal Wangi Beach
  • Padang Padang Beach
  • Bingin Beach
  • Dreamland Beach
  • Nyang Nyang Beach
  • Nunggalan Beach
  • Melasti Beach
  • Green Bowl Beach (A really cool secluded beach but the hike down can be intense)
  • Pandawa Beach
  • Karma Kandara Private Beach (Club)

TOP 5 BEST BEACHES IN ULUWATU AREA 🌏 SOUTH BALI, INDONESIA

All of these are fantastic beaches and worth a visit! If you don’t have your a moto, what you could do is hire a driver for the day (which is super affordable in Bali), and you could do a full day of beach hopping. All of these are within a 15-20 minute drive max from the main area of Uluwatu.

Travel Advice |  PLEASE make sure you have proper travel insurance coverage if you rent a moto and drive around Bali.  Unfortunately, accidents do happen (especially when people drink & drive), and you want to make sure you are covered if something happens.

I personally suggest HeyMondo due to their extensive range of cover for all situations and trip lengths, their fair pricing, and their handy app which allows you to not only manage any claims within the app, but also access free assistance online so you don’t need to rack up an expensive phone bill while abroad!

12. Ulu Cliffhouse

Ulu Cliffhouse is a relatively new beach club located on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean, and it’s simply an Uluwatu must visit! They have a pool with plenty of loungers, so prepare to feel pampered in this stunning location. Order cocktails while you relax by the pool, or head down to the private beach at the end of a narrow pathway.

The views from Ulu Cliffhouse are unrivaled and provide some wonderful photo opportunities. This is one of the Uluwatu attractions that you’ll want to document for ‘the Gram’.

The food is delicious, the staff are super nice, and it’s also a great place to do some co-working (I’ve brought my laptop there many times to work from their beautiful oceanfront tables).

13. Tuesday Cinema Night at Ulu Cliffhouse

One of my favorite things to to do in Uluwatu is watching a movie every Tuesday night! They transform the chic beach club into a movie theater and offer the same menu for dinner and drinks.

It’s my new favorite way to watch a movie, and I went at least 5 or 6 different times when I was living in Uluwatu. Movies start around 7PM, but I’d recommend getting there a bit early to enjoy a fresh coconut or bintang and watch the sunset.

Tuesday Cinema Night at Ulu Cliffhouse

14. Balangan Viewpoint

Just to the right of Balangan Beach, you’ll find the stunning Balangan viewpoint, situated on top of a cliff. It’s easy to get to and provides panoramic views of the beach, ocean, and coastline.

It’s a beautiful place to take photos, but be warned that in the evening just before sunset the viewing point does get rather crowded. For this reason, it may be best to visit in the afternoon. After taking in the wonderful sights, head to the beach for a light meal at one of the beachfront restaurants.

15. Explore The Cave at Pantai Tegal Wangi

The cliffs at Pantai Tegal Wangi are a popular sunset location. But breaking free from the crowds is often the best option. Take the small staircase down to the secluded beach and explore the small rock pools that line the shore.

There’s also a cave on the beach which provides some great photo opportunities. Just be sure to check the tides before heading to the beach. It’s important to visit at low tide as the beach becomes very small during high tide which can become dangerous.

Suluban beach in Uluwatu Bali - Indonesia

16. Uluwatu Surfing

Surfing is by far one of the best things to do in Uluwatu! The locals have found some amazing spots, so whether you’re an avid surfer, or just starting out, there’s a surf spot suitable for you.

Padang Padang is one of the more popular surf spots in the area. The best part is it’s suitable for both advanced surfers and wave seekers that are just beginning their surfing journey. The two breaks make this possible. If you’ve got a lot of experience under your belt, head to the famous left break and ride the barrels. If you’re just starting out, surf the gentle beach break to the right.

Suluban, Bingin, and Dreamland Beach are other locations ideal for expert surfers. They’re also wonderful locations to watch some pro surfing. So, if the waves are calling you, be sure to add surfing to your Uluwatu itinerary.

17. Bali Paragliding

paragliding in uluwatu, bali

For those adrenaline junkies looking to take to the sky, there are daily paragliding flights that take off from the cliff that overlooks Nyang Nyang Beach! I haven’t personally gotten the chance to do this yet, but I’ve seen paragliders and it looks incredible!

Make sure you’re wearing closed shoes, as the company won’t let you fly in slip-slops. It’s also a great idea to bring a Go-Pro if you have one as you’ll want to preserve these memories for as long as possible.

It costs around $100 USD for a 30-minute tandem flight – Contact the people at  Bali Paraglide Tours  for reservations

18. GWK Cultural Park

gwk cultural park - places to visit in Uluwatu

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park  is an impressive 240 hectares and features some incredible works of art. The main attraction at this cultural complex is a 492-foot statue of Vishnu, as well as one of the mythical bird Garuda.

Apart from strolling the grounds and admiring the statues, you can also visit the on-site reflexology center, the souvenir store, and the theater. Often you’ll be able to catch a performance by traditional dancers – this always takes place by the big statue of Vishnu.

I’ve actually been fortunate enough to attend a music festival here, and it’s such an awesome place to visit in Uluwatu! Just be sure to bring plenty of water, as you’ll get tired exploring in the Bali humidity.

19. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day

Beauty treatments in Bali are extremely cheap, and Uluwatu is no exception. It’s not uncommon that you end up paying one-eighth of the price you would pay in the USA. You’ll find nail bars, massage parlors, reflexology centers, and hair salons scattered all over Uluwatu. So, why not spend a day making the absolute most of them.

Taking some time off will allow you to recalibrate after all the exploring you’ll be doing. This is one of the top things to do in Uluwatu for those wanting to relax.

If you’re not on a tight budget, you can also visit world-class spa facilities at resorts like the Spa Alila at Alila Villas Uluwatu .

Things To Do in Uluwatu 2022

20. Karang Boma Cliff

Karang Boma Cliff offers spectacular views, similar to those at the viewing point near Uluwatu Temple but with far fewer people crowding the area. The viewing point is located between Uluwatu Temple and Nyang Nyang Beach – the turnoff is marked by a laminated sign.

There are a couple of locals that have set up a toll gate of sorts to make money off the tourists. They don’t charge much to get through but if you’d like to skip the informal payment make your way there earlier in the day. They only seem to set up shop in the afternoons when they know there’ll be a fair amount of people wanting to visit. There is very little in the way of protection toward the edge of the cliff, so be careful and don’t venture too close to the edge.

Karang Boma Cliff

21. Jimbaran Bay Beach Dinner

Not exactly in Uluwatu, but having dinner and watching the sunset go down in Jimbaran is an absolute must for all visitors to Bali.   Complete with deliciously fresh seafood, candle-lit ambiance, and cold bintangs…it’s a perfect way to spend an evening.

Read all about the  Best 10 Restaurants at Jimbaran Bay , and don’t miss out on a gorgeous sunset dining experience.  I’ve tried a few of the restaurants on the list, and every one of them was incredible!  Oh, how I miss the food in Indonesia!

Uluwatu Things to Do

22. Travel Photoshoot

Uluwatu is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Bali, so where better to hire a photographer and document the most picturesque moments of your vacation or honeymoon.

There are many photographers all over Uluwatu, so sourcing one is never difficult. They’ll be able to take you to the most stunning locations in the area. As well as having a photographer, they’ll act as a guide to hidden locations you wouldn’t have otherwise have discovered.

You’ll end up with a stunning collection of photographs to remember your trip by, and have an awesome time creating those memories. Set aside at least one day of your trip to go on a photo mission. If one of your fellow travel companions knows what they’re doing with a camera, this can even become a free activity.

23. Pre-Game / Afterparty at a Mart Party

Before and after the major club events, parties, and festivals down in Uluwatu – all the party-goers head to one of the Mart’s to have some drinks.  It might sound a bit funny, but these can be so fun and get pretty wild!  I brought my portable music player there several times, and had kick-ons for hours!

It’s a younger/ backpacker crowd full of international travelers and surfers, and some nights can be hit/miss, but if you’re there during a good mart party, you’ll love it!

24. Relax in the Sea Jacuzzi Pools

There are incredible natural ‘jacuzzi’ pools at Tegal Wangi Beach. It’s not a very popular beach amongst the locals, so you’ll often find it very quiet. Wedding photographers seem to be the only locals interested in this hidden gem.

It’s a great place to relax on the beach during the day, and you’ll have access to the ‘jacuzzi’ pools as soon as the tide is low enough. The sunset is also absolutely magnificent from this spot, like most other places in Uluwatu. But the privilege of being able to watch it without a crowd around you is a rare treat.

Spend the day lazing in these natural pools for a free spa-like experience. You’ll also be able to take some unique photographs in the pools, especially if you have a waterproof camera to make use of.

25. Never Miss A Sunset

Last, but not certainly not least…I personally think that Uluwatu is simply best place in Bali to watch the sunset.  There are so many amazing viewpoints to choose from, but my favorites are Uluwatu temple, Uluwatu Beach, or Mu Resort.

Am I Missing Any Epic Things To Do in Uluwatu?

Here is your complete list of the 25 best things to do in Uluwatu Bali.

Go Beach Hopping In Uluwatu

Let’s kick off this list of what to do in Uluwatu Bali with the most popular activity in the area – beach hopping.

It’s without a doubt that Uluwatu is home to some of the best beaches in Bali, so visiting them is a must.

With plenty of stunning white sand beaches to explore, you can surely work on your tan, go surfing, or simply swim in crystal clear waters.

I have put together a separate guide on the best beaches in Uluwatu which I highly recommend checking out.

I don’t want to crowd this blog post with every single beach in the Bukit Peninsula, so below you will find a taster of the top 7 beaches to visit .

Bingin Beach

Bingin Beach is one of the more popular beaches that requires a bit of a journey to get to but it’s 100% worth it!

There are no roads that lead directly to the beach so you’ll have to park your scooter or car in the parking lot at the top of the cliff.

From there it’s about a 10-minute walk down the cliffside via a set of concrete stairs.

Once you climb down, you’ll be welcomed by stunning blue waters, a perfect left-hand barreling wave, and a few bars and restaurants.

Nyang Nyang Beach

Nyang Nyang Beach is one of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches on the Bukit Peninsula.

The glistening white sand and turquoise waters make this beach a must-see location during your visit to Bali.

The easiest way to get down to the beach is via the west entrance because there is a newly constructed road that leads from the top of the cliffs all the way down to the shoreline.

Upon arrival, there is a small ticketing booth where you’ll have to stop and pay an entry fee of 10,000 IDR to access the beach.

I recommend visiting Nyang Nyang Beach earlier in the morning before it gets too hot in the midday sun and you can enjoy a few hours down on the beach to yourself before it gets crowded.

If you do decide to visit Nyang Nyang Beach later in the day, I highly recommend sticking around for sunset which is generally around 6 pm.

You’ll also find a few local beach vendors where you can grab something to eat and drink during your visit.

Thomas Beach is a hidden gem and you’ll most likely get to enjoy this beautiful beach almost entirely to yourself.

Boasting limestone cliffs, golden sands, and turquoise waters, this is a beloved beach that’s not to be missed.

Pantai Dreamland is located halfway between Balangan Beach and Bingin Beach, and it’s easy to get to via the access road.

Dreamland is one of the South Coast’s famous surf spots. The waves are fun and, on most days, suitable for all levels.

A short paddle out to the beach break takes you to short rights and quick lefts, that work best on low tide.

As the name suggests, the beach is a dream location that is not only good for surfing but makes a great spot for relaxing, tanning, and enjoying dips in the clear blue water.

Green Bowl Beach, also known as Pantai Green Bowl , is one of the most secluded beaches on the east coast of the Bukit.

Perched at the base of verdant cliffs, this beautiful white sand beach surrounded by a coral reef and turquoise waters is not to be missed.

From the parking lot, you will have to descend around 300 concrete steps to reach the shoreline. Going down is the easy part, it’s coming back up that can be unforgiving.

A small patch of glistening white sand, no more than fifty meters long, welcomes you at the bottom of the stairs.

The turquoise water to go with will have you in disbelief that this stunning beach actually exists.

What to say – coming and relaxing here is just one of the best things in Uluwatu!

Single Fin Bar is best renowned for its famed ‘Sunday Sessions’ where resident and international DJs play hourly long live sets.

It has people flocking down to Uluwatu to party and experience a Sunday session at Single Fin .

Apart from partying, it is one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Bali, though you have to get here early as it gets super crowded and it’s sometimes hard to find a seat.

Uluwatu Kecak Fire Dance

Another one of the best things to do in Uluwatu is to go watch the sacred Kecak Fire Dance.

The Kecak Fire Dance is a beautiful performance of ancient Balinese tradition featuring dramatic chanting, hand clapping, and mouth clicking of about fifty male dancers.

A fire is lit up at the center of the circle adjacent to the temple and costumes of fiery colors are used for a spellbinding effect.

Why is it a must-do in Uluwatu? Simply because it’s original, it reflects the true Balinese culture, and it’s something you can’t see anywhere else in the world!

I recommend  booking the Kecak Fire Dance online in advance , including private hotel pick-up and drop-off, the entrance ticket, a guided tour of Uluwatu Temple, and the show.

Last but not least is Savaya , an all-day party destination atop a cliff, 100 meters above the ocean.

They host events daily with different DJs and styles, and the entrance tickets are around 125,000 IDR.

Visit Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is one of the most famous temples in Bali along with Tanah Lot in Canggu and Pura Ulun Danu Beratan near Munduk . Uluwatu Temple is one of the coolest things to do in Uluwatu as it’s one of the six key temples that are Bali’s spiritual pillars.

The spiritual significance is not the only reason why you should visit this Balinese Hindu temple.

It’s the incredibly scenic sights that you’ll get from the cliffs that draw visitors to this place. Uluwatu Temple sits on a steep cliff 70 metres above sea level overlooking the Indian Ocean. It’s also where you can catch an epic sunset.

Beware of the monkeys here, they are seriously something else and are the worst behaved monkeys I have seen in all of Southeast Asia. Make sure you do not wear sunglasses (even glasses if you can manage) or jewelry.

Don’t bring in plastic water bottles or food. I had a monkey jump on me here, a friend had her phone stolen out of her hand by a monkey and I even saw one try and take a guys flip flop right off of his foot!

The Uluwatu Temple entrance fee is 30,000 and round-trip transfers are available.

Watch a kecak ‘fire’ dance

A stop at Uluwatu Temple isn’t just in order to see the temple itself but also to see the well-known kecak ‘fire’ dance . Yes, there is fire involved. It’s not the fire that makes this Balinese dance so iconic though.

It’s unique even to Balinese dancing because no music is used but instead human vocals from a large group of men as the dance is performed. Like all Balinese dances, it tells a story.

Watching the kecak dance in Uluwatu is the #1 place in all of Bali to see it, at the amphitheater at Uluwatu Temple because you get to see an incredible sunset behind the performers.

Soak up the sun at these top beaches

Besides the temple, Uluwatu is most famous for its stunning white sand beaches and surfing. While not all beaches are ideal for swimming, they certainly are worthy of visiting to hangout in the sun, to watch surfers, see boat ruins and more.

Uluwatu beaches are one of the best things to do in Uluwatu. Some of the best beaches in Uluwatu are:

  • Padang Padang Beach (a scene from Eat, Pray, Love was also filmed here and is okay for swimming)
  • Bingin Beach (stick to swimming on the left-hand side)
  • Melasti Beach (my personal fav and okay for swimming)
  • Dreamland Beach
  • Balangan Beach
  • Nyang Nyang Beach

Many beaches charge entrance fees that typically range from 10,000-15,000 rupiah.

Join a surf and yoga retreat

Surfing and yoga often go hand-in-hand and Uluwatu has a number of Bali retreats that offer both so you can spend your days in the sun while riding waves and your evenings and mornings stretching it out. With retreats that are only a couple of days to those that are a week long, you could easily book a Bali yoga retreat as your entire trip or add it on to your already incredible vacation!

Catch sunset

Easily another one of the top things to do in Uluwatu is sunset. It’s one of the best places in Bali to watch sunset from, mainly because of its location on the southwestern coast and the steep cliffs that give you an amazing viewpoint over the Indian Ocean.

For a unique sunset experience watch the Uluwatu Temple sunset.

If you’ve been there and done that then a stop at Single Fin is in order so you can sip on a cocktail while watching the surfers hit the waves below as the sky explodes with colour. Some other stellar places for sunset are Rock Bar and Delpi Rock Lounge.

Have a Sunday session at Single Fin

Single Fin in Uluwatu is the equivalent to Old Man’s in Canggu and is one of the best things to do in Uluwatu at night. It’s the top spot to party and Sunday’s are their biggest night. Single Fin beach club is worth visiting any day of the week though for sunset or to enjoy food and drinks overlooking the surfers.

It’s a great view any day and they’ve got awesome music, great food and delicious drinks so don’t miss out on visiting one of the best places in Uluwatu!

Visit the beach clubs

Uluwatu is known for its epic beach clubs that are either on the beach or on the edge of a cliff for stunning views over the blue waters. These cliff beach clubs are unique to Uluwatu and are unlike any of the other beach clubs in Bali. A day of beach club hopping is the perfect way to experience the top choices.

A few of the top ones to visit include Sundays Beach Club , that has direct access to the beach, Omnia which is the most unique beach club in all of Bali with million dollar views, Oneeighty which has one of the most insane infinity pools you’ll ever see, Ulu Cliffhouse which is known for its DJ’s, and Karma Beach Club Bali , a more private and secluded club right on the beach.

Zen out at YinSide Yoga

Uluwatu is a very chilled out area of Bali and it’s the perfect spot to lean more into the practice of yin yoga, the most relaxing kind of yoga out there.

The YinSide studio is a dreamy place to practice yoga with instructors that will guide you effortlessly through classes designed for surfers, for relaxation and to get your energy moving through your body.

Founder Hayley Wenn is an absolute pleasure to practice with and her vision for this studio and the eco-friendly products that support local Balinese people that are sold in the shop are truly worth checking out.

You can find the class scheduled on the YinSide Yoga Instagram and be in the know for when retreats are offered!

See the cave at Suluban Beach

Suluban Beach, nicknamed Blue Point, is not an ideal beach for sunbathers but a trip here is in order to see the cool cave that you have to walk through to reach the water. It’s a hot spot for surfers who use it as a point to surf out from into the strong waves.

To get down to the beach you have to walk down many steps and work yourself through the limestone cave (more stairs lead you down).

It’s an Instagram worthy beach, its cool to watch the surfers paddle out and if you walk up the steps on the opposite side then you’ll find yourself at a luxury beach club with a pool and local warung with epic coastal views.

Have Green Bowl Beach all to yourself

One of the more secluded places to go in Uluwatu is Green Bowl Beach, a paradise for beachgoers who wish to have some solid beach time to themselves. Because getting to this beach requires walking down 75 metres of steep stairs down a cliff means that only those who are adventurous enough dare to go.

If you choose to make the decent then you’ll be rewarded with a small 30 metre white sand beach almost to yourself. It’s best to go during low tide when it’s also best for snorkelling.

Soak in the jacuzzi pools of Tegal Wangi Beach

This beach is not very known by the locals, despite it being in a very obvious destination, just below the temple of the same name that sits atop the limestone cliff that rises up from the sand. It was kept secret for quite a while by wedding photographers for its scenic, rugged coastal views.

When you visit the beach make sure you check it out just before sunset during the ‘blue hour’ for epic sunsets and during low tide when the ‘jacuzzis’ are made accessible.

Surf the epic waves

Uluwatu is a surfers paradise for the stellar waves that hit along the coast. You’ll find an abundance of Uluwatu surf camps around here and lessons too as the waves are one of the top Uluwatu attractions. Some of the best surfing beaches are:

  • Uluwatu Beach
  • Green Bowl Beach
  • Suluban Beach

There are even more places to surf, but these are just some of the top places to surf in Uluwatu.

Try paragliding

I can’t think of a better area in Bali to go paragliding as Uluwatu has the most dramatic views from above. So why not get strapped in with an instructor who will tandem paraglide with you and fly over a sea temple, the cliffs and more before landing right on the beach!

Go on a day trip

As wonderful as Uluwatu is, it is also a great jumping off point for the Nusa Islands . Nusa Penida is the most famous of the three, known for Kelingking Beach (T-Rex Cliff) and its other top spots that are oh so picturesque.

From Uluwatu it’s a shorter drive than other areas of Bali to get to Sanur where the boats take off from so you can spend less time in a car and more time exploring!

How to Get to Uluwatu

Uluwatu is a great destination to start your Bali trip in because it’s one of the closest destinations to the Bali airport. It’s a 45-minute drive and you have the option to find a taxi once at the airport or book a private driver to pick you up. Many places to stay in Uluwatu will help you organize a private driver and some even offer shuttles. Expect to pay 125,000 for a taxi or private car.

I personally recommend arranging a transfer before you arrive to avoid the hassle of dealing with taxis.

From other areas of Bali you can choose to take a taxi, hire a private car or use Grab, Uber or Go Jek (the Indonesian version of Grab and Uber).

The price will vary depending on what area you are coming from with taxis being the most expensive, private drivers being well priced and ride sharing apps about the same price, sometimes slightly cheaper.

Getting Around Uluwatu

Uluwatu is big and there is no way that you will be able to walk to the majority of places you’ll want to go sightseeing in Uluwatu. Unfortunately, private drivers run the area and are ridiculously expensive. But you still have options.

The cheapest option is to rent a motorbike which costs 50,000 per day which can get you to all of the activities in Uluwatu. The roads in Uluwatu are smooth but there are plenty of hills and curves. You will have to pay for parking which is never more than 5,000. I highly recommend having experience before driving a motorbike in Bali.

If you don’t want to drive you can use Grab, Uber or Go Jek for drop-offs for all places to see in Uluwatu. Many areas in Uluwatu do not allow drivers from these apps to pick up at the main tourist sites. Some accommodation options have shuttles organized that are affordable.

Enjoy your time in Uluwatu!

An Uluwatu Bali travel guide: The best things to do, see and eat

Updated On 26th February, 2024

Uluwatu is located on the western cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula in Bali (the bit right at the south of the island) and is one of the most beautiful spots on the island for kicking back, in and around some chilled surfy vibes.

Uluwatu is also, funnily enough, home to the famous Uluwatu Temple locally known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu. The temple sits right on the cliff edge and attracts millions of tourists each year. But really, for me,  an adventure in Uluwatu is all about the ocean.

Whether you’re keen to learn or ready to surf the world class breaks that sweep in from the Indian Ocean surrounding Uluwatu. Uluwatu has some of the most consistent surf breaks in the world, the waters are warm, clear and idyllic for any level surfer.

I first visited Uluwatu 6 years ago in 2013 and I’ve just spent another 2 weeks there. Whilst things are most definitely changing as words catches on about this haven, Uluwatu is still way behind the likes of Seminyak and Canggu when it comes to western development.

There’s fancy shops popping up on many streets and of course Single Fin is still the hottest place to be on a Sunday night but, Uluwatu still feels very untouched. It’s a calm place to explore and did I mention… surf?

Getting around Uluwatu…

The best way to get around Uluwatu, just like most of Bali is by scooter (moped) or car.

If you’re staying for a little while or just want the cheapest and most convenient option, I’d say rent a scooter. Unless you’re staying on a resort and don’t plan to explore much beyond it – you’ll want some transport of your own.

Either hire a car from the airport when you land in Bali or get to your accommodation and sort yourself a scooter. Most companies in Bali will deliver the bikes to your door and you’ll pay them in cash.

Some will want you to pay upfront, I usually pay half at the start and the rest at the end, just to be safe.

Price guide for renting a scooter in Uluwatu:  60-75,000IDR a day

The longer you rent the scooter for, the more of a bargain you’ll be able to arrange. Of course new / larger scooters may cost a little more.

Restaurants I loved in Uluwatu…

In between these dreamy cafes you will find an abundance of Warungs (snack huts), where you can indulge in the finest Indonesian cuisine too. A combination of Nasi Gorengs and dragonfruit açai bowls is what I call heaven.

Some of my favourites in Uluwatu for eating:

  • Breeze Cafe  – The Vegan Nasi Campur was the bomb here.
  • Suka  – All around winner. I recommend: the avo on sourdough, the pita and dips, the grilled chicken burrito.
  • Nalu Bowls  – the PB smoothie bowl. PB for the win.
  • Gelato factory  – ice cream cookie sandwiches!
  • Nourish cafe  – the mahi mahi fish and chips and the vegan cheesecakes!
  • Mana  – for the tacos, views, WIFI working and everything really!!
  • La Baracca / Casa Asia  – pizza and italian galore
  • Yeye’s  – Local cheap but great Indonesian food
  • Drifter  – Great all around surf vibe, cocktails, raw treats, smoothies, coffee, lunch and dinner!

Coffee spots I love in Uluwatu:

Yet to find anywhere that does oat milk, let alone Oatly!

Best Things to do in Uluwatu…

As well as surfing, there are also a plethora of things to do to keep you occupied and keep your adventure doses running high in Uluwatu.

During your time in Uluwatu consider…

  • Head down to Bingin beach for a sunset swim and fresh fish on the BBQ!

An Uluwatu Bali travel guide: The best things to do, see and eat | Where's Mollie? A travel and adventure lifestyle blog

  • Taking a yoga class at one of the centres

Morning light yoga @ Mana, Uluwatu

Yoga @ Yoga Searcher

Sannyas Yoga Academy

  • Do the Detox Chilly Night at Yoga Searcher

Pay 220,000 IDR and dive into the ice pools, hot pools, herbal steam and infrared sauna rooms to completely cleanse your body and mind at sunset. These nights are available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm – 9pm. They also light a bonfire by the outdoor pools to enjoy.

Showers, body wash, tea, water and towels provided and included in the price.

  • Watch sunset at Sunset Point with food and drinks

The ultimate spot. It used to be just a point to drive to but it’s insane popularity has led to the locals building the below there.

An Uluwatu Bali travel guide: The best things to do, see and eat | Where's Mollie? A travel and adventure lifestyle blog

  • Grab a SUP from Thomas Beach and paddle around in the gorgeous clear waters

This beach is dreamy for just a swim and a sunbathe too! Watch out for the steps heading down to the beach.

  • Rent a board at Padang Padang and enjoy the waves!

There are a few locals renting boards down on the beach (will save you carrying one down) so you’re guaranteed a board down there. Sunloungers can be rented and there are warungs too for a post surf nasi goreng and fresh coconut!

Boards are 50,000IDR – 100,000IDR (depending on the mood of the guy lol). You can always barter these prices!

  • Grab an ice cream sandwich at Gelato Factory

It’s opposite Hatch and is the perfect post surf / post dinner treat for those with a sweet tooth!

An Uluwatu Bali travel guide: The best things to do, see and eat | Where's Mollie? A travel and adventure lifestyle blog

  • Visit the Uluwatu Temple

People say it’s the best temple to see whilst in Bali, second to Tanah Lot and I agree – it’s pretty beautiful. It’s set right on the cliff edge and on the perfect side of the island for a clear sunset.  Watch out for the monkeys!

During the evenings, kecak dances are regularly held at the open-air theatre just south of the complex. It’s a local fire dancing thing – i’ve heard it’s super touristy but it’s also on most peoples bucket lists and could be worth checking out!

  • Have a night at Hatch

This is the main ‘club’ type place in Uluwatu. You won’t miss it as you drive through, it’s got the most colourful walls that have people getting that ‘gram shot all day long. They often host themed evenings here like ‘Latin Night’ where you can learn salsa, eat tacos etc and have a dance. Fun switch up to your evening if you fancy a cocktail.  I also saw they served roast dinners on Sundays!

  • Drive 20 minutes to paraglide with Melasti Cliff!

Honestly one of the most beautiful experiences i’ve had in Bali. Flights will be worked around the wind on each day but if you can, try and fly at sunset! It’s absolutely magic and nowhere near as scary as you think!

Book your paraglide flight  here.

An Uluwatu Bali travel guide: The best things to do, see and eat

  • If you’re a confident surfer, surf the world class Uluwatu beach break!
  • If you’re not so confident, grab a cocktail at one of the warungs and watch the surfers on the Uluwatu break

At the top of the beach is a super dreamy place to get a sunset drink. Single Fin is here but cocktails are a little more expensive than the warungs around it. Support the locals if you can and grab a Bintang in one of them.

  • Hire Hari for the day and having him show you all the local spots.

We had Hari as our tour guide for the day and he took us through all the rice fields, explaining and showing us all that grows in the wild and all the natural remedies this island provides to its people. He is an absolute sunshine of a human and you can book him and his car for a day of tailored adventures.

Drop him a WhatsApp on +62 813-3855-5633 or Instagram @hari_made_

Getting In and Around Uluwatu

Write down a few tips about how to get around in Uluwatu , and make your way between its landmarks and hot spots. Just like any other city worth visiting, Uluwatu has a variety of transportation options. Your hotel can provide the best options, depending on your sightseeing itinerary, and many Uluwatu attractions are simple to reach by foot. When you’re out and about, don’t be leery of asking locals for directions, as Balinese people are usually very friendly and helpful, and there is normally a fellow traveler nearby who can most likely steer you in the right direction.

Travel Times to Uluwatu

If you’ve chosen to make this the first stop on your itinerary, you’ll spend about 45 minutes heading south from Ngurah Rai International Airport . From other destinations, your travel time may be longer or shorter.

  • From Kuta , it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • From Seminyak , it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • From Nusa Dua , it takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

You could choose to make Uluwatu your base camp for a stay in Bali . Day trips to many Bali destinations are easy from Uluwatu .

Uluwatu Transportation

Once you’ve settled into your hotel or villa, you’ll be ready to get out there and see what there is to do and experience. Make transportation easy on yourself when you know a few of the local customs ahead of time. Many travelers like to have their own transportation arranged for the duration of their stay. In fact, this is the recommended approach and the most popular.

  • You can take a taxi from the airport into town in order to cover the long distance quickly and easily. Marked taxis in Bali are safe to use and frequented for airport trips.
  • Once you’ve made it to Uluwatu , the local regulations are designed to maintain the ambience of the town. This isn’t a place full of honking taxis or waving down ride shares. Both are prohibited in order to keep the peaceful vibe.
  • Try a scooter to get around. If you’ve never driven or ridden a scooter, you may find that it’s a fairly easy skill to pick up. Wear your helmet and follow local laws as posted.
  • For those who prefer to skip the scooter, hire a private driver. While Uluwatu is a luxurious area, you can find one for a relatively reasonable rate, especially with some haggling as needed. Ask your hotel concierge to help you connect with a comfortable car.

Explore Uluwatu Beaches

Everyone who travels to Bali comes with the expectation of spending much of their time lounging on gorgeous sands and skipping into beautiful water to swim, snorkel or surf. Throughout Bali , many of the beaches are absolutely sublime, so pack your swimsuit and sunblock. The beaches are also a major social draw, where you can meet other travelers and locals.

In Uluwatu , the beach scene is largely about surfing. Waves swell and are topped by white caps, while the water remains warm almost all of the time. The direction of the tide is different, however, depending on which section of the coast you choose, so along with surfing, you can find other watersports, perfect for any day out on the beach in Uluwatu .

  • Bingin Beach offers jaw-dropping views of the Indian Ocean and strong waves that make it a high-demand spot for surfers who take their sport seriously. Sand is dazzling white beneath a jagged rise of cliffs.
  • Padang Padang Beach is a smaller beach with an entry fee, but it’s a favorite among locals and travelers who stay long enough that they start to feel like locals. The steps to the beach here are steep, giving you a chance to warm up before hitting the waves.
  • Thomas Beach is a low-key beach with beautiful white sand. Sometimes considered a hidden beach, it still draws a good number of people on days when the waves are good. This beach is between Bingin Beach and Padang Padang .

Enjoy Day Clubs in Uluwatu

While you’ll definitely want several beach days, there’s a lot to be said for hanging out at the tops of the cliffs in Uluwatu , too. Here is where you’ll find resorts designed to entertain you as you relax.

If you’ve never been to a day club, you’re in for a treat, whether you’re the type of person to enjoy a nightclub or not. The concept of a day club is almost the same as a nightclub, but the ambience is totally different. There’s still a focus on signature cocktails, premium service and gorgeous lighting and decor — although much of the lighting is simply from the sun — but the tenor of day club events in Uluwatu is much more relaxed.

Listen to electronic music, dance by the pool or dine on a patio or in a restaurant. When you get warm, take a dip before laying on chaise lounges, rented beds or in private cabanas. Day club dress often focuses on highly stylish swimwear and other beachwear looks, like upscale sunglasses, layered jewelry, refined sandals and sarongs, lightweight dresses or cute shorts to move between resorts or head in or out.

Check with locals to see which resorts feature music or a quieter vibe, depending on the day, since schedules change frequently.

  • Go to Sundays Beach Club at The Ungasan clifftop resort for one of the most popular spots to hang out during the day.
  • At Ulu Cliffhouse , you’ll find a bar, a restaurant, day beds and a pool for a day of utter relaxation in luxury with incredible views.
  • Another popular spot is OMNIA Dayclub Bali , considered a relatively newer entry to the scene in Uluwatu and full of comforts and luxuries for the traveler who wants an authentic resort experience.

Visit Uluwatu Temple

Chances are one of the main reasons you decided to travel to Bali is an interest in the temples. Balinese temples are called pura , so you might see a name that seems familiar, but instead of calling it a temple, a sign or a local may call it pura .

Temple life is a major part of the history and culture of Indonesia. Experience these holy sites to understand more about the true spirit of the place and to show your respect for their beauty and significance. Temples are a breath-taking aspect of life on Bali and make it clear why it’s known as The Island of The Gods.

General information about Uluwatu Temple

Uluwatu Temple is the one temple many visitors travel to Bali to see. This gorgeous temple is renowned for its clifftop location and is dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, the Supreme God of Indonesian Hinduism, in his manifestation as Rudra, a Rigvedic deity known as the mightiest of the mighty.

If you’ve never heard anyone speak of a culture of deities in these terms, you’ll find learning about temples fascinating. If this is a topic that has long held your interest, seeing Uluwatu Temple with your own eyes is a fantastic opportunity that is sure to remain one of the best travel experiences of your life.

While you’ll definitely understand more about this temple upon visiting it, you can get excited in advance with a few fast facts about its history, layout and significance.

  • The temple sits 230 feet above the ocean at the top of a cliff. Local folklore claims the cliff is the petrified barque, or wooden sailing ship, of the Balinese water goddess, Dewi Danu.
  • There are two entrances to get inside the temple. One is from the north and the other is a hall from the south. A forest with many monkeys surrounds a path that leads up to the temple.
  • The temple is an expansion of the original site. Starting in the 11th century, Javanese sages and pilgrims constructed additions. One of them is said to have obtained moksha or emancipated enlightenment inside the expanded temple.
  • You are welcome to pray or meditate as you see fit within the temple or on the grounds. Many travelers like to visit early and then make their way to another location in order to take pictures or just gaze in admiration as the sun sets.

Uluwatu-Temple monkey

Temple monkeys

Macaques live all over the area surrounding Uluwatu Temple . These descendants of Old World monkeys can be a little bit cheeky, grabbing visitors’ belongings when unattended or even while you’re holding your things. They proceed to hold bags — or even phones — hostage until given fruit. This kind of behavior has been studied by primate experts in the area, who found the trade is taught to younger generations, simply because it works so well on humans. Remember at all times these are wild animals and watch valuable belongings closely.

Sad Kahyangan

Uluwatu Temple is considered one of the sad kahyangan or six sanctuaries of the world. The Balinese people believe these temples provide spiritual balance to the island as a whole and are just one example of the pervasiveness of spirituality on an island full of candles, floral offerings, prayer, blessings and other rituals.

Watch a Kecak Dance in Uluwatu

At sunset at Uluwatu Temple , guests can see the kecak dances performed by locals who refined this art in the 1930s. The dances are based on the Ramayana , a Sanskrit epic, and is sometimes called the Ramayana monkey chant for its consistent chant of the percussive sound chak .

  • The dance portrays the battle between the Vanaras, led by Hanuman, the monkey god, and the armies of the evil King Ravana.
  • Inspired by exorcism dances and originally meant to induce trance, the kecak dances are performed by up to 150 men in checkered cloths tied at the waist and other key dancers dressed in ornate monkey costumes. Audience interaction may occur.
  • To see the kecak performance at Uluwatu Temple , ensure you arrive well before sunset when the dances take place. These are popular attractions both for their authenticity and the chance to see the temple lit from behind by the drama of a sunset amid a crowd of high-energy travelers.

If you miss the dance the day you visit the temple, there are many other places throughout Bali to see kecak performances. Just ask your hotel concierge for assistance in reserving a time to attend one.
