13 Best California Wine Tours for Learning, Sipping, and Sightseeing
Sip your way through the Golden State on these California wine tours.
Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.
Large swaths of beautiful California countryside are dedicated to the production of wine, with boutique and big-name wineries alike producing some of the most famous varietals in the world. After all, Napa Valley wines are up there with Burgundy and Bordeaux in terms of clout.
Idyllic vineyard visits are a lovely part of the California experience, but they're not without their behind-the-scenes stressors: There's the Google mapping, the hours-checking, and of course, the driving or arranging of transportation. Plus, there are literally thousands of California wineries and vineyards to choose from — 3,600 by one count. Even after narrowing it down to a certain region, you're looking at dozens (if not hundreds) of prospective properties.
There is an easier way. Guided wine tours take the legwork and logistics out of the trip. All you have to do is admire the rolling scenery and sip delicious wines at each stop. Maybe take a note or two, if you're so inspired, and doze off as your driver gets you home safely.
The best California wine tours can be geared toward anyone, from total newbies and nightly sippers, to pinot lovers hoping to discover more great reds and couples looking to relive a trip to Provence. They're intimate affairs that favor luxury vehicles and small vans to 50-person buses. The following California wine tours have earned high praise for their tailor-made itineraries and unfailingly kind, informative — and sober — guides and chauffeurs.
Painted Ladies Wine Country Tour
Painted Ladies Tour Company is beloved for their San Francisco city tours tootling around in a (very on-theme) vintage VW bus. The family-run operation also spins their retro wheels through legendary Sonoma Valley on small-group tours to up-and-coming wine producers. Past guests rave about the friendly guides, great road-trip vibe, and the thoughtfully selected lineup that includes an Italian winery for lunch. And don't worry — you'll get a Golden Gate Bridge photo op.
Toast Tours
If your group has some beer and whiskey fans in the mix, this Paso Robles company is an excellent choice. Groups aboard Toast's 12-person shuttle buses can visit distilleries, micro-breweries, and even a cidery, as well as local wineries. ( Tablas Creek Vineyard is a favorite for its organic Rhone-inspired wines and herd of cute alpacas.) Other tours can combine wine country with two classic California sites: Hearst Castle and Pismo Beach.
Edge of the World Tours
This local favorite does tours around San Francisco and Sonoma Wine Country. They visit both boutique and commercial wineries, highlighting local flavors and generous pours. Take the nine-hour Great Wine Tour with up to 13 other people in a van that takes you to three different wineries, lunch in historic Sonoma village, through scenic Sausalito, and to a photo stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. Or, create your own bespoke tour like a walk through the Giant Sequoias followed by a wine tasting in the Sierra foothills.
Bin 415 Private Tours
Something that sets Bin 415 apart is the fact that its guides are certified sommeliers, so they really, really know their stuff. The SF-based tour group organizes private, totally custom wine trips (via Mercedes SUVs, no less) exploring Sonoma and Napa's celebrated varietals. Guides and the vintners themselves illustrate everything from harvesting grapes to bottling. Lunch is a highlight, with past stops including French country cooking (at The Girl & the Fig in Sonoma) and farm-to-table New American (at Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in St. Helena). For those looking to splurge, Bin 415 will try to snag coveted French Laundry reservations.
Squire Livery Tours
While some winery tours embrace the flash factor — Segways! limo vans! party buses! — the three-person team at Squire Livery Tours keeps things sweet and simple with a two-car fleet and a hosting style that's nothing short of a delight. Run by the knowledgeable Kent Higginbotham, a true Napa/Sonoma connoisseur who's lived in the valley most of his life, Squire lets you be as hands-on or -off as you'd like — let them know what you'd like to try (you could, for example, mention that you're a sucker for riesling or want to learn more about cabernet sauvignon) or simply leave everything to the guides. When possible, they'll arrange for private tastings at times when the estate is closed to the public, something vintners often do for VIPs and industry insiders. Past guests regularly gush about Squire guides' expertise and genuine warmth, and report never feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Baja California Wine Tours
If you're visiting San Diego, consider swapping the craft breweries of North Park and Ocean Beach for the highland vineyards of northwest Mexico. With San Diego as its starting point, Baja California Wine Tours leads day trips or even overnights to the famous Valle de Guadalupe, where the altitude, soil, and Mediterranean-like climate grow everything from chardonnay to malbec. Spectacular mountain scenery is a given, and tours can include stops at a 19th-century horse ranch, the studio whose water tanks were used to film Titanic and Deep Blue Sea , and laid-back Mexican beach towns like Ensenada and Rosarito for fresh ceviche and horseback-riding on the sand.
Food & Farm Tours
A day dedicated to wine, cheese, and baby goats? Irresistible. Food & Farm Tours celebrates Northern California's glorious food scene with tours to artisanal food producers and organic farms in Marin and Sonoma counties. The most popular circuit goes to Hog Island Oyster Farm , Cowgirl Creamery , and Brickmaiden Breads , but tailored tours can include sampling crave-worthy sparkling honey wine at Heidrun Meadery or certified organic whites and reds at McEvoy Ranch .
Sustainable Wine Tours
Sustainable Wine Tours specializes in day trips exploring Santa Ynez Valley, one of the five viticultural areas in Santa Barbara wine country. At the helm of Tesla SUVs or Mercedes Sprinters, tour guides bring small parties to a handful of the region's friendly, family-owned wine operations for private tastings. While sampling bottles and charcuterie boards, guests learn about the winemaking process — from picking fruits to fermenting — from estate owners and winemakers.
Noble Wine Tours
Even if you consider yourself somewhat of a wine expert, trying to nail down which of Napa and Sonoma's hundreds (and hundreds ) of wineries to visit is daunting. Noble Wine's Austin Smith takes research out of the equation with his bespoke itineraries based on guest likes, preferences, and interests. Have a thing for pét-nat? Want to visit the winery that put Napa on the map after famously dethroning noble French wines in a blind-tasting competition? (Wine rookies without a clue where to begin are in great hands, too.) Nearly everyone who's vineyard-hopped with Noble praises Smith for his courteousness, professionalism, and insane knowledge on all things California wine. He also doubles as a photographer, keeping a pro camera on hand to help capture the day.
Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley
YinYang/Getty Images
This hand-built replica of a San Francisco street car takes guests on six-hour tours through Sonoma Valley. Tours include a history of the area in addition to three different tasting sessions at local wineries and a boxed lunch. Sonoma Valley Wine Trolley tours are perfect for all kinds of oenophiles and highlight the best of the region’s sprawling estates and wine caves.
West Wine Tours
West Wine Tours are designed to provide both a fun intro to Sonoma wines and easy transport — in this case, courtesy of bright VW vans refurbished with chic seating nooks ready for their moment on social media. The company's "Women in Wine Country" tour focuses on woman-led wineries, with stops at Fantesca Estate & Winery , St. Clair Brown Winery & Brewery (owner Elaine St. Clair is the only female commercial winemaker and brewer in the United States), and the ultra-friendly Crocker & Starr in St. Helena, where co-owner Pam Starr and winemaker Evyn Cameron produce superlative, sustainable wines, including well-loved cabernet francs and sauvignon blancs.
Green Dream Tours
If you’re looking for a more intimate wine-country experience, consider one of Green Dream Tours ’ private tours. The company specializes in full and half-day tours of Napa and Sonoma wineries. Spend the day riding through the gorgeous landscape in a luxury vehicle like a BMW convertible, limo bus, or executive coach with a private guide. They also do open tours that still feel special as Green Dream keeps the groups small and puts a lot of attention into curating the selection of boutique wineries you’ll visit. The Combo Tour of Napa and Sonoma is one of the most popular options — all tasting fees are included and you’ll make a stop at Oxbow Public Market for lunch.
Napa Valley Wine Train
Pair a glass of sparkling wine with the classic glamour of train travel on the Napa Valley Wine Train . This popular tour, which runs on a rail line originally built in 1864, travels three hours from Downtown Napa to St. Helena and back. In addition to sipping varietals from Napa vineyards like Castello Di Amorosa and Sequoia Grove and enjoying picturesque wine country views, tours include winery visits and multi-course gourmet meals of dishes like yellowfin tuna tartare or pan-seared Pacific halibut. You can choose from a variety of experiences, ranging from three to six hours, like the Romance on the Rails trip or a special murder mystery dinner.

Napa Valley Wine Excursions
Proud Winner of the LuxeSF
Rising Wine Star Awards
~ Specializing in Custom Wine Tours Guided by a Napa Native ~
"Napa Valley Wine Excursions is the ONLY tour company I will ever use again in wine country. Our family had an amazing experience with the tour, the wineries, the service. There is not a rating high enough to give this company. From the moment we arrived till the moment we left, it was one of the best experiences we have ever had while on vacation. The service was phenomenal. I would say, 'It's like the French Laundry of tour companies.'
You will not be disappointed." ~ L. Ayers, NC (March, 2020)
With over five hundred wineries in the Napa Valley and nearly four hundred in Sonoma , planning the perfect trip to Wine Country can be overwhelming. Additionally, many of the most remarkable winery experiences – barrel tastings, tours in the vineyards, and meeting with the winemakers themselves – are hidden gems off the beaten path and very easily missed.
As the owner of Napa Valley Wine Excursions, i t is my pleasure to create a unique wine tour experience for you that only a Napa native can provide. Having lived here my entire life, I have been fortunate enough to have established strong relationships with many of the most exclusive wineries in the Valley. With a background in the wine industry as well, I am equipped to create an experience that will give you a true taste of what the Napa Valley has to offer.
Whether you are a novice or a wine expert, new to the Napa Valley or planning your annual visit here, we are happy to customize an itinerary for you. Your day can include visits to the vineyards, caves, and tasting rooms of Napa’s most famous wineries. In addition, you will enjoy the charm and intimacy of exceptional wines in the cellars and private homes of family-owned, boutique wineries. During your tour, we will also provide you with context on the history of the Valley, as well as information on vineyard management, grape-growing, and wine-making.
Contact us via e-mail or through our "Contact Us" page to begin planning your visit to Wine Country (please do not send text messages). For more information on Napa Valley Wine Excursions' range of services, have a look at our website. We look forward to hosting you in Wine Country!

What an awesome day! Cat and Santino took excellent care of the 9 of us as we spent a lovely morning biking to 2 wineries for tastings and then lunch. And after lunch we had a relaxing paddle down the Russian River. We could not have asked for a better experience!
Cat was an amazing guide! She was very knowledgeable about the Russian River, the history of Jenner, and the lunch she prepared was absolutely AMAZING. She knew a lot about the wildlife around the river as well. This is something that I would recommend to anyone that is looking for a fun California adventure!
We really enjoyed our bike wine tour in Healdsburg! Our tour guide, Cat, had so much information on the various wineries we visited and being North Dakota gals, we loved the agricultural aspects she shared about the vineyards. If you love riding bike and drinking wine, this is the tour for you. Ask for Cat-she is the cat's meow!
I really enjoy this kayak guided tour. It was our first experience with my teen daughter on the Russian River. Everything was organized perfectly well, on time, good lunch prepared. Special thanks to our tour lead Camille, because of her our trip was safe, interesting and not boring at all. We definitely recommend this company.
Great trip thanks to good planning by David, our tour guide. He made sure to coordinate with the wineries and pick up the bottles at the end of the trip. We had the pleasure of meeting and talking with one of the wine makers. Thanks Getaway !

Why Trust U.S. News Travel
Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. Itinerary idea in detail
Ask us if you would also like us to arrange your international flights at our preferred rates.
Upon arrival in Sonoma County, relax and unwind in your room before heading to the nightly wine tasting in reception. Spend the evening enjoying a decadent dinner in the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant, which uses local and organically produced ingredients to create a unique culinary experience.
This morning, you will be picked up for a private wine-tasting tour by your experienced guide. You will visit four boutique wineries and have the chance to meet with local winemakers and vineyard managers who will talk you through the history of their wines. Enjoy a picnic lunch under the shade at one of the wineries and swap stories with your guide before being transferred back to your hotel for the evening.
Today, we recommend spending the day at leisure. Indulge in a luxurious spa treatment, relax poolside, or visit some more wineries in the area. If you wish, you can take advantage of a number of complimentary tastings at nearby vineyards. If you're feeling more active, head out to the coast to spot whales at Bodega Bay or kayak through the lush forested river at Russian River.
Today, you will wave goodbye to the lush vineyards of Sonoma and head to the coast. Upon arrival in Carmel, take the time to settle into your Relais & Chateaux hotel. After a long drive and a short walk to the sea to stretch your legs, we recommend dining at the hotel's award-winning restaurant, on their leafy outdoor terrace.
Spend the day at leisure exploring the Carmel Wine Walk on a self-guided tour. The town is dotted with a number of boutique wine tasting rooms and enjoying them at your own leisure is the best way to experience the town's local wines. Alternatively, you may wish to head out into the countryside and explore Carmel Valley or Monterey's River Road Wine Trail. Whatever you fancy, your Audley specialist can recommend some of the most unique.
This morning, we recommend getting up early and starting your drive to Santa Barbara. Heading down the Pacific Coast Highway, spend the day stopping off at viewpoints and admiring the dramatic scenery. A stop at the Big Sur Bakery is a must for any foodie. Upon arrival in Santa Barbara, enjoy some downtime in your room before walking out to State Street for dinner.
After a busy day sightseeing yesterday, take the day to relax and explore at your own pace. We have hand-picked Hotel Californian for its location and proximity to local wineries and restaurants. We recommend wandering the Urban Wine Trail to sample the local grape. However, with over 200 wineries in the county, you will be spoiled for choice whether you wish to explore the town's tasting rooms or head out to nearby vineyards. Your specialist will be able to advise how best to spend your day.
On your final day, you will enjoy a private bicycle tour of the Santa Ynez wine region. Your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel so you can enjoy a full day of tasting. A deli-style picnic lunch is included and will be enjoyed at one of the wineries. Upon return to your hotel, visit the Funk Zone this evening for farm-to-table food in a stylish setting.
After a leisurely breakfast, leave Santa Barbara for your onward arrangements.

Good evening
"California is a dream destination, from star-gazing in LA and sipping world-class wines in Napa, to marvelling at the national parks, and even diving into Disneyland, the happiest place on earth."
Travel Director
Take a city tour of San Francisco
San Francisco is one of the most incredible destinations in California, and we’ll take you on a sightseeing tour of all the highlights from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and the scenic Fisherman’s Wharf dotted with sea lions, to the bustling Union Square, the gorgeous 1,500-acre Presidio Park and the historic neighborhoods like North Beach and Chinatown.
See the quaint Carmel-by-the-Sea
This charming Monterey city is a little slice of heaven, famed for being dog-friendly and home to an inspiring community of artists. With over half of the residents once devoted to the arts (Clint Eastwood was the town’s Mayor!), you’ll find writers, poets, actors and musicians at every turn as you stroll down Ocean Avenue lined with cafés, boutiques and galleries.
Take a scenic drive through Napa Wine Country
As one of the world’s most famous wine regions, you’ll love driving through the beautiful hillside vineyards and countryside scenery of Napa Valley. We’ll even stop at a local winery to explore their stunning vineyards, learn all about the process of winemaking, and of course, enjoy a tasting of the finest Napa Valley wines.
Visit Yosemite National Park
California is renowned for its spectacular national parks and Yosemite is the jewel in its crown. This UNESCO-listed park is packed with wonders, from cascading waterfalls, blooming meadows and emerald valleys, to the iconic El Capitan, glowing in the setting sun. We’ll even stay overnight in a cosy lodge just a stone’s throw from Yosemite Falls.
Discover 'The Salad Bowl of the World' in Salinas Valley
You’ll dive into the world's salad bowl with a Local Specialist, as you take a private farm tour to learn all about the advanced farming techniques and fruit and vegetable production in the incredible Salinas Valley. Admire the lush crops, discover the fascinating history of the valley, and taste some fresh produce for yourself.
Our top 5 things to do in California
There are so many incredible places to visit in California and we’ll show you the very best of the state, from the Golden Gate Bridge to Salinas Valley.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art
As the largest art museum in the western United States, the LACMA is not to be missed. Over a million visitors wander the halls every year, marvelling at the diverse collections, including Asian art, Islamic art and Latin American art, with pre-Columbian masterpieces and contemporary works from the likes of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.
Autry Museum of the American West
The glory days of the Wild West may be over, but they live on in the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. You’ll discover over half a million artworks and artefacts from the American frontier, ranging from Western film memorabilia and a replica movie set of an Old Western town, to Annie Oakley’s engraved golden pistols, and a mahogany saloon with a roulette wheel.
California Science Center
Located in Los Angeles, the California Science Center is one of the most hands-on museums you’ll find in the country. From the world’s largest display of Lego art and the space shuttle Endeavour, to a 7-storey IMAX theater, high-wire bicycle, climbing wall, earthquake simulator, and a virtual reality exhibit, this museum is hours of fun.
Best museums in California
Our California tour packages will show you where to find the most fascinating museums in the state, from amazing aquariums to the story of the American West.
Avocado Toast
If you love avocados, you’ve got to visit California. These creamy green delights have been mashed, sliced and spread on toast in California for over a century, and it’s only in the last few decades that this trendy dish really took off around the world. Just ask your California guide where to find the very best avocado toast and lose yourself in avocado heaven.
Hailed as the signature dish of San Francisco, this seafood stew was developed by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s. Cioppino is traditionally made from the catch of the day, like shrimp, squid, scallops, clams, crab and fish, then melded with a tomato and wine sauce. Be sure to mop up every last drop with a piece of crusty sourdough bread. Delicious!
Known as ‘California’s Cut’, tri-tip is a Santa Maria style barbecue that takes a triangle cut of top-block sirloin and grills it to perfection. It can be sliced into steaks or cooked as a whole block, but either way, the meat is juicy, tender and packed with flavor. Pair it with Santa-Maria style salsa and grilled garlic bread and you’ve got the ultimate Californian dish.
Best food in California
With multicultural influences, fresh produce and farm-to-table experiences, California’s dining scene is truly special and our California holidays will show you where to taste the best.
What to pack for California
With miles of golden, sunny coastline, you can’t resist taking a dip in the ocean or soaking in a pool on your California tour.
Reusable water bottle
California is one of America’s greenest states and you can help reduce your environmental footprint by refilling your own bottle at free water stations around the state.
Big appetite
With so many diverse cuisines and everything from gourmet fine dining to delicious food trucks, prepare to loosen your belt when you travel California.
Sun protection
With almost 300 days of sunshine a year, you’ll need to stock up on sunscreen and bring your sunglasses and a hat on your California trip.
A warm jacket
Despite the heat and sunshine, it can get cold in some parts of California, especially the misty redwood forests, so come prepared with a cosy jacket.

After five years of closure, ‘glamping’ back again in Yosemite National Park

After five years of pandemic- and snowpack-related closures, Yosemite National Park has reopened “glamping” campsites where visitors will have access to showers, gourmet meals and a view of the park’s wild back country.
Camping hopefuls can now enter a lottery to experience three of the five available campsites at the High Sierra Camps from June to September.
The two other sites, Vogelsang and Merced Lake — respectively the highest elevation campsite and the oldest and most remote campsite, established in 1916 — will remain closed throughout the 2024 season. Neither park officials nor Aramark, the park’s concessioner, could be reached to explain why these two campsites remain closed.
According to their website, more than 13,000 visitors stay at the High Sierra Camps each year, and another thousand backpackers passing through each year stop for food at the campsites.
“Glamping,” a more comfortable or glamorous version of camping, has grown in popularity in the past couple of decades. Visitors have the option of paying $1,403 for a guided tour of the park with a weeklong stay, or paying $172 to $185 per night to reserve a bed.
‘Bring a shovel’: Yosemite partly reopens after blizzard brings as much as 45 inches of snow
Yosemite Valley — the most popular part of Yosemite National Park — received about 25 inches of snow. Winds hit 50 to 60 miles per hour.
March 3, 2024
There’s been controversy among certain environmentalists who take a hard line against any type of development in the pristine wilderness, said Jane Simpson, chair of the leadership training program at the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club. But Simpson said she is glad to hear that the campsites are reopening to the public this year.
“The experience is phenomenal,” said Simpson, recalling her own High Sierra Camp visit back in 2015. “The people are very hyper aware of their impact.”
As an avid hiker and backpacker herself, Simpson is used to having to carry all of her own supplies when visiting Yosemite National Park. But the amenities of the High Sierra Camps allow visitors to leave behind tents and cooking necessities, as they have running water and three meals a day prepared by professional chefs.
On their website, Aramark and the national park service express their commitment to protecting the environment. “We take our role as stewards very seriously and actively work to protect the resources for generations to come,” says the website for the High Sierra Camps.
Opinion: My Colorado home was once a YMCA camp. In thousands of people’s memories, it still is
Former campers keep coming back, cruising past our driveway. I relish their stories, because this land will always belong to them too.

Jeff Jenkins, assistant professor of parks and protected areas at UC Merced’s Sierra Nevada Research Institute, said that the National Park Service has to strike a balance between protecting national parks and making them accessible to everyone.
“I remember we saw a woman hiking the route of these High Sierra Camps that was pushing 90,” Jenkins recalled when his family stayed at the High Sierra Camps together. “She was able to get out there too.” First-time, inexperienced campers, the elderly, and families might prefer to stay at the High Sierra Camps because of the amenities.
By having designated areas where semi-permanent shelters are set up, Jenkins said, the “sacrifice zones” allow for a much larger swath of wilderness to remain untouched. “Impact has been constrained to mostly the trail corridor and these areas of the wilderness, these hotspots,” said Jenkins.
The urgency of mitigating human impact on the environment has forced the National Park Service to innovate by adding features like the bear-proof lockers that prevent bears from finding easy food sources near human dwellings, Jenkins noted.
But the debate around these High Sierra Camps isn’t anything new. Dave White, the director of global institute of sustainability and innovation at Arizona State University, describes it as the “fundamental paradox” of the national parks as they balance access and protection.
White said the social and cultural impact of visiting parks also helps to shift the conversation around sustainability and changing personal habits to preserve the environment. For visitors, “it helps them to have greater awareness and understanding about critical environmental issues that we’re facing, including things like climate change,” he said.
The wonder of Yosemite National Park never grows old for White, who has visited several times. “It is some of the most spectacular natural beauty that exists anywhere in the world,” he said. White said it’s the scale of the natural features, and the history of the Indigenous tribes who were violently forced off the lands to make Yosemite, that still humble him today.
“When you’re there, you just feel as a human, you feel insignificant in an important way,” said White.

Strike it rich on this California Gold Country road trip from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe
April 17, 2024 // By Tamara Gane
By Tamara Gane April 17, 2024
The California gold rush was one of the most exciting times in U.S. history, defined by prospectors, outlaws, and enterprising madams who journeyed to towns like Placerville, Folsom, and Sacramento with dreams of striking it rich.
Today, this history is preserved throughout California. On this California Gold Country road trip, you'll explore towns in Sacramento and El Dorado counties, stopping at museums, pop culture landmarks, and wineries, before ending in South Lake Tahoe.
Note: Although you can start and stop anywhere, budget at least two days to explore each town.

Rancho Cordova and Sacramento
Start your California Gold Country tour in Rancho Cordova. During the gold rush, the town was a significant supply stop between Sacramento and Folsom. It remains the ideal place to gear up for a road trip since there are dozens of shops, restaurants, and hotels in Rancho Cordova. (Most Rancho Cordova hotels are chains, so keep those loyalty numbers handy.) While you're here, check out the city's vibrant beer, wine, spirits, and mead scene in the Barrel District of Rancho Cordova .
A short distance away, visit historic gold rush buildings dating back to the mid-1800s in Old Sacramento. Today, these buildings hold shops, bars, restaurants, museums, and other tourist attractions. Top attractions include the Sacramento History Museum , the California State Railroad Museum , and a riverfront park with a carousel and waterfront Ferris wheel.
Where to stay in Rancho Cordova: The Courtyard Sacramento Rancho Cordova provides easy access to the freeway and the area's shops and restaurants.
Ten miles from Rancho Cordova, the Folsom Historic District bursts with gold rush-era architecture in upscale boutiques, eateries, coffee shops, inns, and museums. The town square offers a slice of California Gold Country with a historic train depot, turntable, and seasonal activities like gold panning and blacksmithing.
Folsom was founded in 1849 but didn't become a household name until 1955 when Johnny Cash released his single, "Folsom Prison Blues." The singer later recorded two shows and a live album here, cementing its status as one of the most famous penitentiaries in the world. Folsom still operates as a prison, and you can hike or bike past its walls on the wheel-chair accessible Johnny Cash Trail .
Where to stay in Folsom: Bradley House , a bed and breakfast in the middle of Folsom's historic district, is within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and The Square.
Placerville
Twenty-five miles away from the Folsom Historic District, Placerville blossomed from a mining camp to California's third-most populous city during the gold rush.
Today, Placerville is one of the best-preserved Gold Country towns in California. You can easily spend a day admiring the architecture and popping into museums, restaurants, and eclectic shops. Don't miss the El Dorado County Historical Museum , which features artifacts and life-sized displays to showcase the area's history.
The Gold Bug Park and Mine carries visitors on a journey back in time with a mining museum, blacksmithing demonstrations, gold panning, and a mine tour.
When it's time for lunch, stop by The Original Mels Diner , part of the nostalgic restaurant chain featured in movies like "American Graffiti" and the television series "Alice." After, head to Apple Hill , where you'll find lovely pastoral views and a collection of farms, orchards, and wineries.
Where to stay in Placerville: The gold rush-era Historic Cary House Hotel offers reasonably priced rooms within walking distance of museums, restaurants, and old-time saloons.
When you leave Placerville, drive 10 miles via Highway 49 to Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma. That's where the California gold rush ignited in 1848. At its peak, 10,000 people called this area home; today, Coloma only has about 200 year-round residents. Historic buildings include two churches, a tiny post office, a schoolhouse, and a blacksmith shop. There are also several replica buildings, including a sawmill and a cabin.
The Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park museum tells stories of the California gold rush through interactive exhibits, artifacts, and live events. Guided walking tours, gold-panning lessons, and a junior ranger program are among the most popular programs in the park.
Where to stay in Coloma: Coloma Resort offers accommodations for nearly every type of traveler. Guests can choose between campsites, cabins, or glamping options in tent or wagon villages.
South Lake Tahoe
End your California Gold Country road trip in South Lake Tahoe, about 70 miles from Coloma. The area exploded with commerce during the gold rush due to its prime location between the Comstock Lode in Virginia City and the Central Pacific Railroad near Truckee.
By the time the gold rush waned, many fortunes were made, and wealthy families began summering in Lake Tahoe. You can get a glimpse of what their lives were like at the Tallac Historic Site , a 74-acre lakefront property with three historic estates and the ruins of what was once advertised as "The Grandest Resort In The World."
From May through October, a free museum, special events, and tours of one of the residences are available. The property is free, open to the public year-round, and connects to beaches and hiking trails.
Where to stay in South Lake Tahoe: The century-old Camp Richardson Resort offers traditional hotel rooms, cabins, and campsites within a mile of the Tallac Historic Site.
