Amboseli Safari Lodge

In the land of giants.

An intimate lodge in the heart of Kimana Sanctuary, Kenya’s first community-owned conservancy, renowned for its lush landscape and remarkable density of wildlife — along with its famed backdrop, Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Set within a Fever Tree forest where some of Africa’s last Super Tuskers roam — elephants with tusks so large they drag along the ground as they walk — Angama Amboseli is a gentle start or finish to any East African safari.

A Wilderness Jewel

With just 10 Guest Suites in a private wildlife conservancy, Angama Amboseli is respite from the world. A haven for the prolific elephant population in this ecosystem, get up close to the relaxed resident herds and their calves as they saunter through the Sanctuary just as you do. The rough texture found on the exterior of the buildings is also a gift from the elephants — their dung, mixed with concrete.

Exclusive traversing rights and unrestricted game viewing, guests can enjoy everything from night drives to early morning Pyjama Safaris

With nods to Angama’s other properties and designed by the same team, the inspiration here is the elephants — their rounded shapes and bold, playful nature

Each Guest Area and Suite has been designed around uninterrupted views of Kili even from the bed to the vanity mirror

Guests can explore Amboseli National Park, a 45-minute drive from the lodge to the gate, home to over 400 bird species and an array of wildlife

Explore the Lodge

The guest suites.

Another contemporary take on African design with nods to the giants of this landscape — including concrete mixed with elephant dung for the unique exterior texture — each of the 10 Suites is a mix of canvas, concrete and stone accented by woven rattan and grass, all in earthy, neutral colours. What’s an Angama suite without a view to wake up to? Each is orientated so that Kili can be seen from nearly every corner — from the bed to the shower — while floor-to-ceiling screened doors are all that lies between you and the mountain.

Guest Areas

‘Kimana’ means ‘a place to stay awhile’ and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do just that. The main Guest Area offers flexible indoor-outdoor dining with a baraza to wind down the days by the fire, telling stories with a drink in hand or marshmallows for roasting. The nearby Studios house a Safari Shop, Games Room, Art Gallery, Weaving Studio and a Photographic Studio, perfect for capturing Amboseli’s iconic scenes.

A special viewing tower built for watching the elephants who like to visit the marsh surrounding it. You’ll see plenty of other wildlife too, including 360 degree views of Kimana, the Chuylus Hills and of course Kili. Come for a picnic lunch, a lazy afternoon with a book, or for sundowners to toast the day.

The Swimming Pool

For cooling off or dozing off, watching the mountain or a little elephant theatre. The raised rim-flow Swimming Pool features a drinking trough just below, made especially for resident herds. It’s perfectly placed as the ellies like to while away the hours in this area of camp, too.

Discover the Location

The sanctuary.

Kimana Sanctuary is the first community conservancy established in Kenya, and is owned by 844 Maasai family members. Thanks to its perennial stream, the Sanctuary boasts the greatest habitat diversity and wildlife density in the area attracting scores of eland, reedbuck, warthogs in their hundreds, along with giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Even the elusive leopard, cheetah and serval can be seen here along with many species of bird.

The Super Tuskers

Elephants are the real stars here as large breeding herds move in procession through the Sanctuary. There’s also a good chance you’ll see one of the famed Super Tuskers — elephants whose tusks weigh more than 100lbs each. Some of the last remaining Tuskers in Africa love to feed on the lush vegetation around the lodge, in particular.

Amboseli National Park

Derived from the Maasai word for ‘salty dust’, Amboseli National Park is just a 45-minute drive from the lodge which guests can enjoy as a half- or full-day excursion with a picnic lunch at a private Angama spot. This is one of the best places in Africa to see huge herds of elephants marching single file across dusty pans or having a bath in the dry lake beds. In the savanna and woodlands, you may spot lion or cheetah, while in the wetlands, hippo, flamingo and some of its other 400-odd species of birdlife can be found.

The Corridor

The entrance to Angama Amboseli is located at the ‘pinch point’ — all that remains of a centuries-old migratory path connecting Amboseli National Park to the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo West National Park. Supported by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, this portion of the corridor is just 85 metres wide at its narrowest, running between agricultural land and across a busy highway making it a striking example of human and wildlife co-existence. The sights and sounds of the neighbouring communities and farms that guests may encounter highlight the complexities of conservation in the 21st century.

Amboseli Experiences

The perfect stay.

We’re often asked, ‘How many days should one stay’? The truth is, there is never enough time, but the perfect stay might look something like this:

Arriving at Kimana’s private airfield, your first glimpse of Angama Amboseli is the sweeping canvas fly sheets tucked into a verdant Fever Tree forest. After a welcome tour and settling into your Suite, enjoy a delicious lunch on the patio of the Guest Area, then get ready for your first bumble in the Sanctuary. A stop for sundowners to toast the first day with Mount Kilimanjaro in necessary, followed by a lantern-lit dinner back at the Guest Area — and maybe a night cap under the stars around the Baraza.

Wake up to the sun illuminating Kili and after an early breakfast, depart for a full-day safari in Amboseli National Park. As you leave, visit the ‘Pinch Point’ — the smallest segment of a critical wildlife corridor.  Spend the day exploring the Park’s famous marshlands and dry lake bed looking for Super Tuskers. After a picnic lunch at a private Angama site, return to the lodge in time for a visit to the Studios. Dinner this evening is served outdoors by the stream — follow the scent of wood-fired pizzas.

Start your day with a gentle guided walk around the Sanctuary, learning about the fauna and flora endemic to the ecosystem, while a surprise picnic breakfast awaits under a Fever Tree. Returning to the lodge, enjoy an in-suite massage or try your hand at watercolour painting on your patio. Take a lazy lunch at the Swimming Pool and spend the afternoon watching the ellies pass by. End the day with sundowners at the Mnara and a night drive before or after your private dinner in the Gallery.

Your Butler gently wakes you with coffee before first light to catch your sunrise hot-air balloon flight. Float along with Kili, admiring the views below before touching down for a champagne breakfast. A much-needed siesta and lunch are followed by an afternoon with our conservation partner, Big Life Foundation — visit HQ for control room and camera-trap monitoring or go out with ranger patrols and canine tracking units. Dinner is served on the private patio of your Guest Suite as the moon rises slowly over Kili.

At dawn, roll out of bed and straight onto the awaiting vehicle for a signature Pyjama Safari. Let the Photographic Studio capture the moment of you posing (or dancing) with Kili in the background. Back at the lodge, it’s time to freshen-up and pack before breakfast in the Guest Area and a gentle drive to the airfield for your onward flight.

How to Get There

There are daily scheduled flights with Safarilink landing at Kimana Airfield in the Sanctuary, as well as Amboseli National Park, about a 1h drive. Private charters are always welcome at the Sanctuary’s airfield, whether to or from the Mara or Naiorbi. Its also an easy 3h30min drive on a paved road  from Nairobi to the gate.

Where to start from? This Hotel is magnificent! Since the pick up from the airstrip to the very little detail inside the room, it has been a perfect experience. Location is beautiful, in the middle of the nature respecting its environment and yet making the most comfortable rooms and social living rooms. Birds, squirrels and little monkeys come to your window and you can see the Kilimanjaro mount through your door! The pool is gorgeous, the food is great and the game drives are amazing! Staff is so committed on making unforgettable memories. I wanted to see hippos, so they searched all over until we saw one. Plus, rangers know a lot about the park so they give great explanations and knows the perfect spots to find the animals. Also about the staff: they are super polite, super friendly, always asking whether you need something. Manager is super nice! he helped us printing some papers we needed. the SPA service is amazing! Totally worth the money. I recomend this Hotel to everyone and I will definetly come back with my family.

Ol Tukai Lodge Amboseli

Located in the heart of the Amboseli National Park and offering stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Ol Tukai Lodge Amboseli offers a pool, restaurant and guest lounge. Ol Tukai Lodge Amboseli offers a restaurant and 2 bars for snacks and drinks. The dining room opens onto a veranda in the garden.

safari lodges amboseli

The location is truly unbelievable. You can walk out of your room to see Mount Kilimanjaro (when there are no clouds) or so many animals at the fence line (saw baby elephants, Zebras, Buffalos, Wildabest, Hippos, and more). The staff went above and beyond, they were knowledgeable and friendly, and they even tracked my flight arrangements for me. I very much appreciated that the food is buffet style (plus delicious), and the activities such as the game drives are very reasonably priced as are the extra drinks! I am a tough critic who has traveled the world and this place sticks out as one of the best. If you are looking for a place to stay in Amboseli, you can stop your search. I kept debating my choice when I was looking but I am so glad I went with my gut instinct. I would go back and I would love to bring my family one day. I will highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Kenya. This place is worth the value.

Amboseli Eco Camp

Everything about the eco camp is impressive.

Amboseli Sopa Lodge

Amboseli Sopa Lodge offers accommodation, a restaurant, a bar, a shared lounge and a garden. Both WiFi and private parking are accessible at the lodge free of charge. Buffet and Full English/Irish breakfast options are available every morning at Amboseli Sopa Lodge .

The grounds were beautiful, the views of Mt Kilimanjaro were breath taking, the pool was one of the nicest I have ever been in. We traveled with our kids, but my wife commented on how romantic it would be as just a couple. The food is incredible and plentiful. They will even pack you a big lunch if you're doing a full day game drive. The Masai on site are friendly and fun. And there are happy hour drinks and snacks everywhere you turn.

8 Questions About Amboseli Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

safari lodges amboseli

When is the best time to go on an Amboseli safari?

“June to October: this is the Dry season proper and, as for so many parks and reserves you’re likely to visit on your Kenya tour, it’s the perfect time for Amboseli safaris for that familiar combination of clear skies, dry safari trails and wildlife gathering around a shrinking number of waterholes. June could be my favorite month, with, for the most part, low- or shoulder-season prices. October is good for finding wildlife, but can also be fiercely hot. The short rains in November and December leave a lovely green tinge to the land through December, January and February. As a general rule, avoid March, April and, to a lesser extent, May, when the long rains can turn many trails into quagmires and most of the wildlife disperses beyond the park’s boundaries. Easter can also be overwhelming, with epic crowds of expats and locals flooding in from Nairobi and Mombasa.”

What are the best reasons to visit Amboseli?

“The wildlife is outstanding, but it’s given an added sense of grandeur by the killer Kilimanjaro views. It is almost the signature image of the African safari – an elephant grazing in the greener-than-green swamp grasslands in the center of the park with perfectly proportioned Mt Kilimanjaro behind. Africa’s highest mountain may lie in Tanzania, but easily the best views of the mountain are from Amboseli, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Normatior, otherwise known as Observation Hill, is one of very few places where you can get out and stretch your legs, and also take in wonderful views in every direction. Elephants are everywhere in Amboseli, with big tusks and an untroubled demeanor – the elephants here have been studied at length by legendary scientist Dr Cynthia Moss for decades and they’re well accustomed to vehicles. There’s plenty of other wildlife, too, and the long sight lines make for more iconic African views – the savannah plains with acacia, the endless horizon, a silhouetted giraffe…”

Can you visit Mt Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?

“No. The grand old mountain may look so close that you can reach out and touch it, and the Kenya–Tanzania border is not far away (somewhere close to the lower foothills of the mountain), but there’s no crossing here. The nearest crossing if you wish to actually climb the mountain is east of here, at Oloitokitok, a busy Maasai border town with an immigration post. All told, you can expect to drive for half a day, including time spent at the border, from Amboseli to Marangu, one of the gateway towns to a Kili climb, or on to Moshi where many of the climbing tour operators have their base.”

What animals can I expect to see on an Amboseli safari?

“Elephants are easily the main draw of any Amboseli safari – they’re big, they’re beautiful and they’re always found in the Enkongo Narok, Ol Okenya and Longinye swamps that lie in the park’s heart. Bad-tempered hippos also lurk in the waters, occasionally emerging to do battle for territory. I’ve always been really fortunate on Amboseli tours with lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas (including a den), while giraffe are often sighted amid the acacias in the park’s east. Other plains animals include zebras and Thomson’s gazelle in abundance, while baboons and vervet monkeys are similarly prolific. The swamps draw hundreds of bird species, especially waders, year-round but with a discernible spike in numbers from November when migrating species arrive from Europe.”

How long is the drive to Amboseli?

“From Nairobi, it’s a four- to five-hour drive, although traffic levels along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway vary greatly. The most commonly used park gates are Iremito and Kimana. It’s also possible to drive from the Kenya–Tanzania border at Namanga, although you’ll need a 4WD vehicle for this route along the rough tracks of the park’s western reaches. There are a number of airstrips in the Amboseli Basin, and flying is a good alternative to the road journey. You can arrive for Amboseli tours in an hour from the capital’s Wilson Airport, through which there are connections to other Kenyan safari destinations, such as the Masai Mara or Samburu National Reserves.”

What condition are the roads in within the park?

“Although I always prefer to travel in a 4WD vehicle, most Amboseli safari tour trails (with the possible exception of the western sector of the park) are accessible in a normal 2WD vehicle. Indeed, the most commonly sighted safari vehicle in Amboseli is the ubiquitous white minivan with a pop-up roof. I have seen minivans crossing the park with ease in April (the heart of the rainy season), but Amboseli’s poor soils quickly turn to mush after rains and only an experienced local driver should consider visiting the park in a 2WD at this time. There are, of course, no paved roads in Amboseli.”

What are the pros and cons of different accommodation types?

“With Amboseli safari packages, the question is whether to stay inside the park or just beyond its boundaries. In the center of the park, there are two long-established but extremely comfortable lodges, a luxury tented camp and campsites, meaning a range of Amboseli safari prices. Whichever you choose, the advantage is that you don’t have to wait until the park gates open at 6 AM before exploring the heart of the park. It also means you can linger a little longer as the sun nears the horizon – it’s forbidden to drive inside the park after sunset. Staying outside the park means you’ll have more choice, from campsites, lodges and tented camps to luxury options on nearby Maasai lands. You may also save a little money on park entry fees, although not necessarily.”

What lodges or camps would you recommend?

“Inside the park, I’ve always had a soft spot for the aging Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, a sturdy structure and the first safari lodge I ever stayed in, while Ol Tukai Lodge has a fabulous location and rather lovely grounds. Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli is an elegant and nicely secluded luxury tented camp away from the busier areas of the park but still with fantastic Kilimanjaro views. Beyond the park, two places rank among the most storied and luxurious of Kenya safari accommodation options, and both boast Kilimanjaro views. Ol Donyo Lodge, out beyond Mbirikani northeast of the park, is quite possibly the most beautiful lodge I’ve stayed in while on a Kenya tour, while Campi ya Kanzi, away to the east off a trail to Tsavo West National Park, has a real Maasai feel to it and is a beautiful tented camp.”

It was big, we saw almost all the animals except the rhino (but the rhino doesn’t live in Amboseli) and no cats. But we went on safari on for 1,5day. But the experience was so cool and wonderful, we would definitely go again.

Italy

Amboseli is great, but you can not see all the animals you can find in Maasai Mara. It is iconic for the view of mount Kilimanjaro and the many elephants. It is also recommended for birdwatching and has wonderful landscapes.

Slovenia

Amboseli was quite hot and dusty. We saw Kilimanjaro, elephants (even the one with huge tusks), lions setting hunting formation. I was still amazed, but if I compare it to Masai Mara, I cannot give it the same rating.

Because of the swamps the National Park concentrate a really high quantity of animals. It is absolutely beautiful and you see A LOT of animals all together. In really large quantities, it felt like a movie. Another unique thing is the view...

Game Drives

Amboseli’s fragile ecosystem displays an impressive wildlife variety, with more than 50 mammal species. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants among other wildlife species. Another attraction at the park is the opportunity to meet the Masaai and of course the spectacular view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Game drives, if not already included in your package, can be booked at Kibo Safari Camp.

Kibo safari camp.

Kibo Safari Camp lies within the Amboseli National Reserve with splendid views of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.

Amboseli, meaning “salty dust” in maa, the language of the Maasai, is a place of stark contrast. The park provides the classic Hollywood image of Africa. Set in rolling savannah scenery the park is dwarfed by the presence of the pink-tinged, snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

“In sync with Nature”

Kibo is special. This lovely gem nestled in the Amboseli National Park caters for the traveller who wants to enjoy nature in all its fullness. Their are tents as well as lodge rooms which give you a sense that you are in the wild-and still with all the proper necessities one needs e.g. hot water, mosquito nets and every tent has a veranda outside that faces Africa’s highest mountain. Was referred to the place by their Facebook page that has adequate information and I have to admit, my time there was nothing but lovely. I enjoyed the food too as well as their highly refreshing swimming pool.

David J. Nairobi, Kenya

“Excellent!”

The best service, very good and fresh food, very clean and value of everything. A very nice pool area with a spa, the bar attendant Morris, is extremely courteous and efficient. The Camp has a vegetables garden…for any family or group safari this will be ideal place to stay.

RoseMuriuki Nairobi, Kenya

“Great place to stay”

I’ve been here twice now and for good reason. The tents are roomy, well appointed, and clean. The grounds offer a few places to stretch the legs and a pool. The food is excellent and varied, and it tends to be a little busier than other camps, which I enjoy as it keeps the atmosphere lively while never feeling crowded. We happened to be there over Christmas and the festive dinners and vibe were great! Lots of fun.

Amboseli National park lodges

Amboseli national park lodges are categorised into three categories each category is in the different levels of stars. The first category is the upmarket commonly known as the Luxury hotels or Lodges . These are always from 4 to 5 star hotels and most of them are located inside the national park. They have great unique features as later discussed on this article. The second category is the mid-range hotels or lodges. These are 3 star hotels or lodges. Then finally the budget or one-star hotels, they are mostly camps or tents some few are located inside the park but the majority are found at the neighbourhood of the park. The classification that is used is more reliable and it can even be greater than then city town system. They check more details, facilities, amenities and services that the lodge has. The tier main objective is to address the current needs of the traveller whose aim is to achieve his or her lifetime dreams of visiting and exploring Africa especially the Amboseli national park . The classification goes as far as checking the lodge staff members and their capabilities as well as qualifications.

The different categories of Amboseli national park lodges is a significant factor that has attracted more guests to the park since all budgets are catered. The lodge or hotel is one of the factor that determines the cost of your Amboseli safari. Its only the level of accommodation that differentiates budget safari from luxury safari yet the wildlife experience remains the same. Amboseli national park is one of the premium national parks in Kenya that receives more travellers daily. Due to high concentration of Elephants and other big game, this has attracted more hotel investors to build more hotels or lodges at the park to accommodate the number of guests that visit the park

We treasure much the kind of accommodation that guests will stay during their safari in Amboseli national park with us.  Through this, we ensure utmost safari satisfaction for the guests with the rightful Amboseli national park lodges. The selection of the park lodges directly affects the safari experience of the guests as it contributes psychologically. We have visited different park lodges and made signed contracts with them on behalf of the guests. This has made us serve our guests with the best safari experience at the most affordable prices. The routine checking on the contracted Amboseli national park lodges has made it easy to rate and monitor the service delivery of the lodge to our guests. It is rare or not even there for our guests to complain for our service in any of our contracted Amboseli national park lodges.

Our contracts with some of the park lodges has made our budget guests to enjoy mid-rage services and lodges at fair costs. We bargain on behalf of our guests and we give them our negotiated costs since we do not want a commission on lodges but get only some little in our safari cars. Our Amboseli national park lodges start from mid-range lodges which have highly qualified staffs. They provide the best excellent services to the guests with good location at the park that gives guests opportunities to view wildlife while on the balcony of their tents or lodges.

Choosing Amboseli national park lodges is a key factor when planning for Amboseli national park safari. Lodges that are found inside the park gives you more accesses to the park activities all the time. Even the park entry fees expire after every 24 hours compared to the lodges that are found outside where the guests has to pay entry fees every time you want to access the park.

The park has a good number of lodges that are found in all the three categories below are some of the most common and best Amboseli park lodges.

They are mostly located inside the national park with great service delivery with qualified and skilled staffs that ensure your stay at the lodge is excellent. Some of the Mid-rage park lodges are Sentrim Amboseli lodge, Porini Amboseli Camp, Ol Tukai Lodge , Gamewatchers Adventure Camp, Tawi Lodge Amboseli, Satao Elerai Amboseli, Amboseli Tortils Camp which has over 18 tented rooms. Amboseli National park lodges

The lodges give you the true feel of your dream safari in Kenya, only let the local reputable tour operator help you choose the best. They seem to be all good online but on ground some of them are not especially for the guests looking for budget lodges. For all categories of Amboseli national park lodges, you have to book them in time. The prices depend on the season from green season also called low season to the peak season. During low season you can get the availability of accommodation even a week to your trip while in high season you have to reserve your room as early as 3 to 4 months early. The cancellation policy keeps differing from lodge to the lodge. You can consult the lodge directly for more information and the prices. Top 10 Safari Parks in Africa

C an't decide where do you want to start your next (or first) safari in Africa? We collected the top 10 safari parks in Africa places to see wild African animals in their natural habitat. If you want to know what to be on the lookout for, read our article on the top 10 safari animals you can spot on your travels!

There's always more to explore so feel free to check out our article on the top 10 countires for safaris! For some Safari fun you can check our blog post on how a Family Safari completely errupted into chaos!

Read ahead or jump to any section that interests you:

Introduction

A safari (Swahili: journey) in one of Africa's national parks is an exciting thing: many people can observe a larger number of wild animals and even have the oppurtunity to see the famous Big 5 of africa.

The focus is on the savannah and bush landscapes, where savannah elephants , lions , buffalos , and other well-known wild animals feel at home.

Whether it's Africa for the first time or safari connoisseurs, there should be something for everyone. And it attracts attention: There is no best destination in Africa, but there are the best destinations.

So, where should the next safari lead?

10th place: Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Where else can wild animals be observed in front of one of the most famous mountains on earth? The Amboseli National Park at the foot of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania serves both as a postcard motif for Africa and as a photographic object. Giraffes, elephants and all sorts of other wild animals strut in front of the snow-covered summit of the "Kili" and give great photo motives.

Ancient elephants still live in the park. This allows visitors to observe the almost intact social behavior of the pachyderms in their herds.

The Kilimanjaro usually wraps itself in thick clouds during the day. The chances of seeing it are best in the morning and evening.

9th place: Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa

Number 9 on the top 10 safari parks in Africa is Addo. Known for, as the name suggests, its elephants, the Addo is more than a convenient destination near South Africa's Garden Route. The park is home to lions again after a resettlement program; black rhinos and leopards are also found here. Due to the extension to the south, the coast with its sharks and whales is also part of the park, which now advertises with the "Big 7".

In conclusion, the park is ideal for exploring with your own (rental) car. Please make sure to ask in advance what you have to consider for the self-drive safari.

In addition, holidaymakers in their cars should ensure they do not run over pill turners (African dung beetles), hundreds of which run across the roads depending on the weather.

8th Place: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Namibia's most important park is home to countless wildlife, including the white and black rhino who are critically endangered, something you can read more about in one of our other articles about these ancient and disappearing creatures. There are also several predatory cat species and many antelopes. "Etosha" means "big white square," which describes the landscape well. The vegetation is extremely sparse; in the dry season, many animals gather at artificial waterholes.

In the dry season, many animals can easily be observed at the park water holes and camps. 114 different species of mammals live in the park.

Every coin has two sides: The park is completely fenced in and cuts the animals off their original routes in search of water in the Kuene region. The waterholes are not comparable to the actual environment and natural migration behavior for true lovers.

7th place: Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

The Tarangire National Park is one of the most underestimated parts of the continent. Many visitors only make a short stop at the Serengeti or do not ebaobabven include the national park in their travel plans. But the park is home to large herds of elephants and many other species in a remarkable landscape of boabab trees.

The park is known for its elephant herds, which run through a prehistoric landscape along the Tarangire River.

The park is home to the tsetse fly, which transmits sleeping sickness. Visitors should urgently pay attention to consistent protection.

6th place: Chobe National Park, Botswana

"Land of the Giants" is written on the sign at the park entrance and already announces the park's main attraction: Elephants, one of the savannah's most social creatures . Between 80,000 and 100,000 pachyderms are estimated to live in the park and adjacent areas, where they migrate depending on the season.

Botswana pursues an exemplary animal and species conservation policy and no longer kills elephants if they become too numerous for the ecosystem. Instead, fences were dismantled to create more space for the animals. Kaffir buffalos and warthogs are also common. As a result, always check the weather forecast before you go.

A safari with the boat on the Chobe river belongs to the experiences, which holiday-makers surely do not forget so fast.

During the high season the Chobe River can be very narrow.

5th place: South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

On the Luangwa River, the wilderness awaits: no fences, no radios to communicate with the rangers. Those who travel to the South Luangwa National Park will experience the bush unadorned, without much traffic and wild. It is not uncommon for your own jeep to be the only one at a spectacular sighting, giving visitors more time and peace to enjoy the encounter with the animals. Night safaris and bushwalks, i.e. safaris on foot, are allowed in the national park.

Pure wilderness. The park is known for its hippos and leopards . Many camps are not fenced and often wild animals run through the lodges. The park is also home to numerous endemic species and subspecies, i.e. animals that can only be found here. Sometimes you can even see the endangered Pangolins and the even more threatened Rhinos . Two species of Animals we explore in more detail in another article.

These include the Cookson gnu, the Crawshay zebra and the Thorneycroft giraffe.

The season plays an important role in the South Luangwa National Park. While in the dry season many large wild animals gather at the water and are so easy to discover, during the rainy season bird lovers get their money's worth.

4th place: Kruger National Park, South Africa

For most vacationers the Kruger National Park is the first safari experience in the African bush . It is one of the largest national parks on the continent and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. In contrast to the open savannahs in East Africa, the landscape is bushy and the animals are harder to spot.

This may be described as the best South African Safari.

In the Kruger National Park live some very rare animal species like wild dogs. Another animal worth further exploration in another one of our articles.

Animals in Vermont

The good infrastructure, the developed roads and the fences around the national park make it clear that the park is used and marketed commercially.

This partly causes a lot of traffic in the park and has at some corners only little to do with the real wilderness feeling.

3rd place: Ngorongoro Nature Reserve, Tanzania

While driving over the edge of the burglary crater into the nature reserve, visitors can rarely suppress the "wow" that involuntarily comes over their lips. The view can take your breath away. The safari through the crater, which has the highest predator density in Africa, becomes the photographic highlight of many Africa journeys.

The wildlife hike through Masai Mara and Serengeti also touches on the protection of the wildlife.

Overall, the high density of animals naturally attracts many visitors and some have the feeling of driving through an open-air zoo.

Some of the jeeps obstruct the way of the animals or hinder cats of prey during the hunt. Tell your driver that you don't approve of such behaviour.

2nd place: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Hardly any other national park in Africa is as famous as the Serengeti. This is of course due to the diverse fauna and one of the largest animal migrations in the world .

On the other hand, the Serengeti is almost always threatened: Many people have an interest in the place and in the fertile savannah, on which millions of wild animals cavort and planned large-scale projects would probably mean the end of the national park. The battle for the Serengeti has been fought for decades and culminated in the documentary "Serengeti must not die" by Michael Grzimek and his father Bernhard in the 1950s.

Really one of the Top 10 Safari Parks in Africa.

The migration of wild animals, where millions of wildebeests, zebras and antelopes travel in a large circle through the Serengeti and the adjoining Masai Mara in Kenya during the course of the year. This is known also as one of the great wilderbeast migration , a topic you can do further reading on with another one of our articles .

The Serengeti is exposed to constant threats. The plans to build a highway through the area are not over yet. There are also frequent conflicts between wildlife and humans.

In addition, organizations are now warning that too many tourists are coming to the park. It is best to drive in the low season and avoid facilities that require a lot of water (swimming pools etc.).

1st Place: Masai Mara Nature reserve, Kenya

Number one on the top 10 safari parks in africa list! When tears shoot into the eyes of the viewers of a lion documentary because the pictures are so overwhelming, the reportage is mostly shot in the Masai Mara (or Maasai Mara).

Wide landscape with green hills as far as the eye can see. The view is interrupted only by Wildebeest , zebras, giraffes, Elephants ,, antelopes , lions , hyenas… The Masai Mara could pass for an African cliché if it were not real.

Word has got around of course that the Masai Mara is a paradise on earth. It is therefore frequently overcrowded and the many cars already have influence on the behavior of the wild animals. Some cars leave the tracks in search of the best view. If this happens to you, it's best to tell the driver that you don't want them to.

The park also serves as a Rhino sanctuary and is home to some 60 white and black rhinos, who are guarded around the clock by armed rangers. An absolute must for rhino fans, who are almost guaranteed to meet some of the animals here.

The impressive Murchison waterfall, where the Victoria Nile plunges over 43 metres into the depths, is also a must see. The park is home to the endangered Rothschild Giraffes (also Uganda giraffe or Nubian giraffe). To the south of the park is the Budongo chimpanzee forest.

The park is in some places tsetse fly high area. Be sure to take care to protect yourself against insects.

When to go on a Safari

The best time is always present, but if you are looking for the most enjoyment from your trip, the best time to go is from July through October, when the animals are easy to find and in substantial numbers. However, deciding when to go on a safari depends on  what  country you want to visit and when you can plan your trip. As well as the type of wildlife you hope to encounter.

The best months for an African safari are therefore varied.

What to pack/ best luggage for African safari

Some of the most recommended basics:Here's the "must-haves" to  pack  for your  safari :

  • T-shirt, shirt or blouse – long sleeves and collars help to protect from the sun and mosquitoes
  • Fleece or warm jacket.
  • A pair of  safari  trousers – those that zip off at the knees are very handy, too.
  • Comfortable walking shoes (or boots) and socks.

Above and beyond the comfortable basics, there are niche items which could enhance your experience on safari. We've researched the best of these items to take with you.

Best insect repellent for African safari: Natrapel 8  Hour insect repthatellent: this is a CDC recommended product based on 20% Picaridin formula and is  DEET  FREE. It is safe to spray on your skin and clothing.

Best binoculars for African safari : Celestron 71347 Outland x | 10×25 |  Best compact Binoculars  for Travel.

Best camera for African safari : Best -buy cameras for  safari  in Africa: At Canon, it would be the Canon EOS Rebel series. Often you can get a kit ( camera  + lenses + accessories). Best for travelling and easy shots.

Best shoes for African safari :  light trail  shoes  and hybrid  shoe /sandals (Keen, Teva, Merrel, North Face, HiTec, Garmont, Salomon etc) are adequate for regular travel and normal  safari  conditions. Even fly-camping trips and walking trails on fairly rough terrain don't warrant hiking boots when conditions are dry.

It is important to find out what you need for specific areas as well as administrative documents and permits.

Summary on Top 10 Safari Parks in Africa

The landscape is very bushy and visitors often only see the animals when they are standing directly in front of or next to the car. Slow driving is therefore all the more important.

Frequently Asked Queastions (FAQs)

Safari experiences are generally safe, but it's important to follow guidelines and instructions provided by your guides or tour operators. Wildlife should be observed from a safe distance and never approached or provoked. It's also recommended to stay within designated areas and camps, especially during night hours. Adhering to these precautions ensures a safe and enjoyable safari experience.

Many safari operators and lodges prioritize sustainability and conservation efforts. They work to minimize the ecological impact by implementing responsible practices such as supporting local communities, conserving natural resources, and participating in wildlife conservation initiatives. When choosing a safari operator, it's advisable to opt for those with strong environmental ethics and credentials.

Interacting with or touching wildlife is strongly discouraged and, in most cases, prohibited during safaris. The well-being of the animals and the safety of visitors are of utmost importance. Safaris promote responsible wildlife viewing, which involves observing animals from a safe distance and respecting their natural behaviors. Touching or disturbing the wildlife can cause stress or potentially dangerous situations for both humans and animals.

Several ways to contribute to conservation efforts during a safari include supporting eco-friendly lodges or tour operators that actively participate in conservation initiatives. Additionally, you can choose to visit parks and reserves that allocate a portion of the entrance fees to conservation projects. It's also encouraged to learn about and respect local customs, traditions, and wildlife protection regulations while engaging in responsible tourism practic
