Winlock Woman Starts Travel Company Catering to Seniors

Three decades of students knew Diane Byrnes as a teacher at Winlock’s middle and high schools. Now senior citizens are getting to know her as a travel coordinator.

Byrnes, who retired from the Winlock School District in 2007, has started Freedom Tours Northwest, a travel company catering primarily to the elderly. The company, which operates out of her home for now, was borne from a love of travel.

“During spring breaks and summers when I taught, I always traveled. I’ve been to 42 different countries,” Byrnes said. “Ever since I’ve retired, I’ve wanted to travel.”

Byrnes worked as a tour guide for Discovery Tours in Centralia for a time, but said she wasn’t happy with the way things were working out with the company. She said she lost thousands of dollars herself to the company, which went underwater amid mounting customer complaints in 2013.

Realizing the void Discovery Tours’ departure left led Byrnes to seriously consider starting a company of her own, and she did earlier this year despite the death of a friend and business partner.

“I received a lot of calls from people who said I should think about starting a tour company,” Byrnes explained.

Freedom Tours Northwest was born earlier this year, and Byrnes hosted the company’s first trip in May. Nine people took a trip to Camano Island for an art tour.

Byrnes began advertising in a senior newspaper in Olympia, and said most of her business so far comes from the Thurston County area. An initial list of 20 people on the company’s mailing list has grown to 600 in just a few months’ time, Byrnes said.

She has invested a tremendous amount of her assets in the company, buying a giant tour bus used in most of the company’s trips.

“I no longer own my house,” Byrnes laughed.

Since Freedom Tours Northwest started, Byrnes has accompanied groups on trips to Mariners games in Seattle, scenery in Rogue River, Oregon, and camel races in Reno, Nevada. In fact, she and a group just returned from their Nevada trip last week.

Byrnes said past events have reinforced a commitment to run her business ethically and respectfully.

“If we have to cancel a trip ahead of time, I give the money back usually before the day the trip was set to start,” Byrnes said. “I want to be above board with everything I do.”

The company is using volunteer help for now, with two commercially-licensed drivers piloting the bus with Freedom’s name on it. 

Byrnes says her commitment with the company is to reach a population that is advancing in age and still wants to see the world. 

“There are a lot of seniors out there that just need an avenue to get out and travel,” Byrnes said. “I really want to help them out.”
