About The Book

Bono—artist, activist, and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2—has written a memoir: honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he’s lived, the challenges he’s faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him.

“When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. The people, places, and possibilities in my life. Surrender is a word freighted with meaning for me. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book. I am still grappling with this most humbling of commands. In the band, in my marriage, in my faith, in my life as an activist. Surrender is the story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress . . . With a fair amount of fun along the way.” —Bono

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him.

Surrender’s subtitle, 40 Songs, One Story, is a nod to the book’s forty chapters, which are each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created forty original drawings for Surrender, which will appear throughout the book.

Out Of Control – ‘SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’ by Bono

Bono reads an extract from his book – ‘SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’ – in an animation which illustrates an extract from the chapter titled ‘Out of Control’, in which he tells the story of starting to write U2’s first single on 10th May 1978 – his 18th birthday, exactly 44 years ago today. In ‘SURRENDER’ – out on 1st November – Bono writes about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with—from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his 20 years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. The title ‘SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story’ refers to the book’s 40 chapters, which are each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created 40 original drawings for ‘SURRENDER’ which will appear throughout the book, and also feature in this animated video.

About the Author

The lead singer of U2, Bono was born Paul David Hewson in Dublin. He met The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr., and Adam Clayton at school, and in 1978, U2 was formed. The band released their first album, Boy, on Island Records in 1980 and to date have released a total of fourteen studio albums that have sold 157 million copies worldwide. Heralded by Rolling Stone as “a live act simply without peer,” the band’s record-breaking 360° Tour (2009–2011) remains the highest-grossing concert band tour of all time. U2 have won numerous awards, including twenty-two Grammys, more than any other duo or group, as well as an Academy Award nomination and the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award. In 2005, U2 was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Alongside his role in U2, Bono is a ground-breaking activist. A leader in Jubilee 2000’s Drop the Debt campaign, he next took on the fight against HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty, co-founding sister organizations ONE and (RED). ONE is a movement of millions of people dedicated to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease. With ONE, Bono has lobbied heads of state and legislatures all around the world, helping to ensure the passage of programs, such as the U.S. PEPFAR AIDS program, that have helped to save tens of millions of lives over the past twenty years. (RED)—which partners with companies to raise public awareness about, and corporate contributions for, the AIDS crisis—has to date generated more than $700 million for the Global Fund to treat and prevent AIDS in Africa. Since 2020, ONE and (RED) have also been fighting COVID-19 and its impact on the developing world.

In 2016, Bono co-founded the Rise Fund, a global impact fund investing in entrepreneurial companies driving positive social and environmental change in alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Bono has received a number of awards for his music and activism, including the Freedom of the City of Dublin (with U2), Chile’s Pablo Neruda Medal of Honor, the Légion d’honneur from the French government, an honorary British knighthood, the Fulbright Prize for International Understanding, and TIME magazine’s Person of the Year (along with Bill and Melinda Gates). He lives in Dublin with his wife Ali Hewson.

Bono at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston

Original story by aaron j. sams (2022-11-05).

Tonight was the second stop on Bono’s book tour, “ Stories of Surrender “, which is playing in theatres in North America and Europe. The show tonight is at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, MA. Bono first played the Orpheum theatre 41 years ago this month, on November 14, 1981. U2 would also play there twice in 1983, one of the performances supplying “11 O’Clock Tick Tock” for the Under A Blood Red Sky album. The venue has a capacity of 2700 people, making it the seventh largest venue in use for the tour.

Bono arrived at the venue in the late afternoon. He did not stop to greet fans upon entering, but later came out to say a quick hello to those gathered near the stage entrance. There are no reports yet that Bono stopped to sign books in Boston today. There were long line ups later for people to enter the theatre.

Bono’s band for this tour includes former U2 producer, Jacknife Lee on keyboards and percussion, as well as Kate Ellis on cello and Gemma Doherty on harp, backing vocals and keyboards. Bono and the other performers are on a bare stage, with little for props (table and chairs in one area, an arm chair and a table in another area.) The stage does have writing from Bono’s hand which can be seen at various points in the show. Accompanying Bono are images that he has created, animated behind him, including his drawings and text. The show is a mix of music and stories from his book, and features a mix of full length songs and shortened versions of songs. Others from U2’s past collaborators have been involved in the show, including Willie Williams and Gavin Friday. Joe O’Herlihy is providing sound for the tour.

The set list and performance is very similar to what was performed two nights previously in New York. One additional song was identified as part of the transitions, “Into the Heart”. The team are still working out the bugs in places, and at one point Bono had to ask Willie Williams to adjust the lighting to better see the teleprompter, leading to a few moments of humour. When talking about America, and mentioning various ethnicities, there was a huge roar of support when Bono mentioned Ukrainians. The show was also scattered with mentions of local references to Boston and the local area throughout. He mentioned how U2 had played the Orpheum when they were starting out in the 1980s, and later when speaking of the One and ( RED ) campaigns he said he needed a bigger brain and he hadn’t gone to “that fancy school” in Boston.

Ahead of the show the music played was mostly from Bono’s “60 Songs that Saved My Life” playlist including songs by This Mortal Coil, Prince, The Clash, Patti Smith, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and others. The playlist ended after “Bittersweet Symphony” played, and Bono took the stage to “Empire State Human” for the second night in a row.

Thanks to Alison, Christopher, Kristal, Suzanne and Antonio for their assistance with the set list.

Tickets went on sale on Friday, October 7 at 10am local time. A presale opportunity through U2.Com for subscribers was available a day earlier at the same time. Each ticket came complete with a copy of Bono’s new memoir, Surrender , delivered the night of the show. Face value for tickets was $55 – $250, and dynamic pricing was not in use for the event. There was a two ticket per person maximum in effect for the event. The event was presented by Live Nation and the Orpheum Theatre Boston.

The tour is being held “phones free”. As ticket holders enter the venue, they show their mobile ticket on the phone, and then are asked to put their phone into a pouch which is then locked for the duration of the show. Pouches are unlocked as people exit the show at the end of the night, and there is a special area inside the venue where you can go to use your phone while in the building.

“I miss being on stage and the closeness of U2’s audience,” Bono comments in a statement. “In these shows I’ve got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell… Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, Surrender, which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here”.

Spanning 40 chapters, each named after a U2 song, Bono’s book walks readers through his early days in Ireland, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was 14, to U2’s journey to the top, and his years-long commitment to good causes.

“When I started to write this book, I was hoping to draw in detail what I’d previously only sketched in songs. Growing up in Ireland in the seventies with my fists up (musically speaking), it was not a natural concept. A word I only circled until I gathered my thoughts for the book.”

Bono is no stranger to the stage. As a member of U2, the band re-wrote the history books with the 360° Tour which, in 2011, passed the $580 million mark, making it the then-highest-grossing tour in Billboard Boxscore history (Ed Sheeran has since overtake that figure).

The 62-year-old singer has also flirted with writing. In 2007, he was tapped as the first-ever guest editor of Vanity Fair , a year after filling-in for the same role at the U.K.’s Independent .

Live Nation and Penguin Random House announced a 14-city book tour in support of SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story, the forthcoming memoir by Bono-artist, activist and U2 lead singer -which will be released worldwide on Tuesday 1st November 2022

LATEST NEWS

The book tour, titled 'Stories of Surrender' and produced by Live Nation, is a limited run of theatre dates to mark the release of a memoir in which one of the world's most iconic artists writes for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. Bono will bring the stories of his life to life - live and in person- to 14 cities across North America and Europe.

Kicking off at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Wednesday 2 November, 'Stories of Surrender' will make stops in Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Nashville, San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, Glasgow, Manchester, Berlin, Paris-and Bono's hometown of Dublin- before wrapping on Monday 28 November in Madrid.

Tickets go on sale starting Friday 7 October at 10am local time and will be available at: LiveNation.co.uk Each ticket purchased comes with a copy of Bono's forthcoming book, Surrender, to be released on 1st November 2022. All tickets purchased online will be delivered as secure mobile tickets. There will be a two-ticket limit per person.

"I miss being on stage and the closeness of U2's audience," said Bono. "In these shows I've got some stories to sing, and some songs to tell... Plus I want to have some fun presenting my ME-moir, SURRENDER, which is really more of a WE-moir if I think of all the people who helped me get from there to here."

On November 1, Bono will release his memoir titled SURRENDER: 40 Songs, One Story, the story of the remarkable life he's lived, the challenges he's faced, and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him. The subtitle, '40 Songs, One Story,' refers to the book's 40 chapters, each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created 40 original drawings which will be featured throughout the book.

In his unique voice, Bono takes readers from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2's unlikely journey to become one of the world's most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life-and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him.

U2 lead singer Bono sings his heart out onstage.

In 2014, Apple gave iTunes users U2’s newest album, “Songs of Innocence,” free of charge.

Eight years later, their lead singer and frontman Bono is embarking on a short tour promoting his new memoir “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story,” and let’s just say… these tickets have been popular, with or without you.

Now, it will cost a pretty penny to hear the “Sunday Bloody Sunday” singer live at one of his 14 gigs spanning the globe.

Case in point, the lowest price we saw for tickets to Bono’s Nov. 2 appearance at New York City’s Beacon Theatre was $278 before fees on Vivid Seats after the event sold out on Ticketmaster in less than 20 minutes.

That’s not to say the shows won’t be a good time, though.

At each stop, Bono promises “some stories to sing, and some songs to tell” in a night full of “words, music and some mischief.”

Enough beating around the bush.

Noah Kahan Fenway Park tickets: Cheapest price to see Boston concert on 2024 ‘We’ll All Be Here Forever’ tour

H e may be from Vermont, but Boston loves Noah Kahan as their own. The New England native heads back to the city to wrap up the U.S. portion of the 'We'll All Be Here Forever' tour at none other than Fenway Park.

One of Kahan's most memorable times in Boston wasn't when he threw the first pitch for a Red Sox game in April but when he performed at Boston Calling in 2023. The singer drew a crowd of hundreds of people, even during a mid-day set, a sign of his continued success. So it's no surprise fans rushed at the opportunity to see him play at the iconic baseball stadium.

The folk-pop singer, known for his song "Stick Season" off the album by the same name, has taken over music, collaborating with artists Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves and Hozier as he's emerged as one of the biggest musicians of his style. It helps that he's dedicated to his craft, performing on a scooter in Berkeley, California, after a pickleball-related accident .

Whether you enjoy his music or his humor, there's few better places better suited to host Kahan than at Fenway Park. Here's how to get tickets to his shows in Boston, which include performances by Mt. Joy and James Bay.
