Nairo Quintana disqualified from 2022 Tour de France after tramadol positive

• Colombian had finished sixth overall in the race last month
• Positive test infringes UCI rules but is not a doping violation

The Colombian rider Nairo Quintana has been disqualified from the 2022 Tour de France after infringing an in‑competition ban on using the drug tramadol, the world cycling governing body (UCI) said on Wednesday.

Quintana finished sixth in the general classification for Team Arkea‑Samsic in the Tour last month, but analysis of two dried blood samples revealed the presence of tramadol and its two main metabolites.

“In accordance with the UCI medical rules, the rider is disqualified from the 2022 Tour de France. This decision may be appealed before the court of arbitration for sport (Cas) within the next 10 days,” the UCI said in a statement. “As this is a first offence, Nairo Alexander Quintana Rojas is not declared ineligible and can therefore participate in competitions.”

Since 2019, using tramadol has been an offence under the UCI medical rules because of the side-effects of the substance that include dizziness, drowsiness and loss of attention. Testing positive for tramadol does not constitute a doping violation.

Tramadol has been used frequently in the past by professional cyclists – figures from UK Anti-Doping state that, between 2012 and 2019, 4.4% of in-competition tests showed the use of the painkiller, while 68% of urine samples that contained tramadol, from across 35 Olympic sports, were from cyclists.

Two Colombian climbers prevailed on Stage 18 of the Tour de France on Thursday, the first of three hard days in the high Alps.

First, Nairo Quintana, who won the stage with a masterful charge that took him over two hors catégorie climbs and down a fast, technical descent with no serious challengers for the victory. He sailed to the line solo, with loads of time to celebrate and what looked like a spilled gel having stained the front of his kit.

Second, Egan Bernal, the 22-year-old who co-captains Team Ineos with Geraint Thomas. Alone among the remaining overall contenders who put in time on race leader Julian Alaphilippe , Bernal attacked the yellow jersey group in the last few kilometers on the day’s final climb, the hors catégorie Col du Galibier.

Though the other favorites made up some ground on the 19K descent to the finish in Valloire, Bernal kept them at bay, finishing the stage in eighth and jumping to second place on the General Classification, 1:30 behind Alaphilippe.

Thomas mounted a defense a few minutes after his teammate’s attack, and the yellow jersey group soon split in the final run-up to the Galibier summit. Alaphilippe was temporarily dropped toward the end of the climb, and it looked as though his 10-day stretch in yellow might have finally come to an end.

However, Alaphilippe is a great descender, and the Frenchman had plenty of time to catch up on the long, winding downhill on the far side of the mountain. The GC favorites (save Bernal) regrouped here, then finished together after the road straightened out in the last 5K.

So Thomas, now in third, remains 1:35 behind. Steven Kruijswijk sits in fourth at 1:47 behind, Thibaut Pinot in fifth at 1:50 behind, and Emanuel Buchmann in sixth at 2:14 behind.

Quintana’s performance boosted him from 12th to seventh in the overall rankings, though he still has almost four minutes between himself and Alaphilippe. The 29-year-old Movistar rider has won both the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España in his decade-long pro career, but never the overall title in France. He remains a long shot for the yellow jersey, but proved his dominance in the mountains on Thursday.

Bernal, who currently wears the white jersey in the Best Young Rider competition, entered the day in fifth with a 2:02 deficit. But he was only 12-27 seconds behind the three others in the GC top five, putting him now in the best position to challenge Alaphilippe for the overall win.

The young Colombian—who previously had only competed in a single Grand Tour, last year’s Tour de France—was considered a pre-race favorite , perhaps even more so than returning Tour champion Thomas. But Thomas proved that he wouldn’t cede the Ineos leadership so easily, especially with a strong ride on Stage 6’s summit finish on La Planche des Belles Filles.

But after today, the Ineos team leadership, like the competition for the Tour victory itself, remains up in the air.

Romain Bardet, who had a disappointing Tour this year and saw his overall chances crumble early on, survived in a two-man chase group behind Quintana on the final climb. Determined to win a stage this year, Bardet kept the pressure on and dropped his companion, Astana’s Alexey Lutsenko. But he only managed to take second, finishing 1:35 behind, while Lutsenko crossed the line in third, 53 seconds after that.

Still, Bardet put in an admirable ride, stealing the polka dot jersey from Tim Wellens as leader of the King of the Mountains competition.

As if the long, technical downhill into Valloire wasn’t enough, riders had to deal with rain at the finish line making the course slick. George Bennett, the 29-year-old New Zealander on Jumbo–Visma, crashed on the descent off the Galibier. Though he reportedly sought medical attention afterward, Bennett finished the stage in 27th place and said that he will start the race on Friday.

Nairo Quintana says he's the outright leader of the Movistar team for the Tour de France in July, despite riding alongside Alejandro Valverde and Mikel Landa.

Quintana, currently training in his home country of Colombia, is likely to return to competition at the Critérium du Dauphiné in June having not raced since the GP Miguel Indurain in early April.

The 29-year-old started his European season at Paris-Nice in March, where he finished second overall behind compatriot Egan Bernal (Team Ineos), before heading to the Volta a Catalunya where he finished fourth overall. His only win of the season so far came at the Tour Colombia with victory on stage six.

The Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España winner has made no secret of the Tour being his major objective for the 2019 season, with the route extremely favourable to his attributes.

This year's Tour de France features just one individual time trial (27km), but has five summit finishes, three of which finish at over 2,000m in altitude, meaning the 106th edition could be Quintana's best opportunity yet.

"I come to the Tour with more experience, knowing more about my body, the team and the route," Quintana told the press at a conference in Bogotá.

"I am focused on this goal and I trust in my preparation, I always give the best. For me this Tour is simply a new opportunity that I will take full advantage of and I hope that things go well."

In last year's Tour, Spanish team Movistar went with a three-pronged leadership of Quintana, Valverde and Landa, with Landa taking the best GC finish in seventh place at over seven minutes down on winner Geraint Thomas .

Quintana, a three-time podium finisher at the Tour, took 10th place overall but salvaged the team's only win of the race with victory atop the Col du Portet on stage 17.

While all three riders are again likely head to the Tour in the same team, Quintana says that team boss Eusebio Unzué has been clear that he will lead the squad. He added that he would also like to have current Giro d'Italia leader Richard Carapaz as part of the squad in July.

"Eusebio Unzué has told me that I will be the leader for the Tour, so I have been preparing for that and I hope to count on the support of my team-mates," Quintana said.

"I hope [Carapaz] can keep the pink jersey for his country, for Colombia and for all of Latin America. I'd like to have him with me on the Tour as I would like to have Winner Anacona, but the directors choose the best riders; in contention there's also big riders like Valverde."

Quintana has been rumoured to be leaving Movistar at the end of the season, with French team Arkéa-Samsic touted as frontrunners to sign him as they look to move up from Pro Continental to WorldTour level.

The Tour de France 2019 begins on July 6 and ends on July 28.

Tour de francia: nairo quintana: “veo el podio más posible y sigo con el sueño amarillo”.

Col du Granon (Francia), 13 jul (EFE).- El colombiano Nairo Quintana se mostró este miércoles muy satisfecho del resultado de la primera etapa de alta montaña del Tour de Francia, en la que fue segundo de la etapa y ascendió al quinto puesto de la general, lo que le acerca a su objetivo de subir al podio final.

“Hoy solo puedo tener alegría, nos sentimos bien, la idea es seguir remontando (…) Creo que se puede llegar al podio, tengo el sueño amarillo y vamos a seguir trabajándolo, con paciencia, poco a poco, sin volvernos locos”, dijo el de Arkea, que está a 2.37 del líder, el danés Jonas Vingegaard, y a 15 segundos de la tercera posición.

El colombiano estaba en el grupo de los favoritos cuando comenzó el ascenso al puerto de Granon, donde estaba situada la meta. En las primeras rampas, el de Boyacá lanzó un potente ataque que no pudieron seguir el resto de los favoritos, lo que le permitió ganar una renta y ascender en solitario una cima que se subía por segunda vez en la historia.

“Había equipos con varios corredores y me he lanzado a probar”, dijo el corredor, que consideró que, al no tener un equipo capaz de hacer la selección en el grupo tiene que buscar las oportunidades que le ofrezca la carrera.

Quintana fue atrapando a ciclistas supervivientes de la escapada del día, hasta que solo tuvo por delante a su compañero francés Warren Barguil, al que superó quedando solo como cabeza de carrera.

Por detrás se sucedieron los ataques, como el del francés Romain Bardet, que acabó por alcanzarle, pero también el de Vingegaard, que logró dejar al esloveno Tadej Pogacar.

El danés, segundo el año pasado en París, fue el más fuerte de la jornada y acabó arrebatando el maillot amarillo al ganador de las dos últimas ediciones.

“La carrera estaba muy lanzada. Me puse a mi ritmo, pero sabía que tanto Vingegaard como Pogacar podían superarme”, señaló Quintana, que se quedó a un minuto de su tercera etapa del Tour.

Pese a ello, aseguró que la primera cita con la alta montaña le permitió acercarse a su objetivo en este Tour, que es lograr volver al podio de París, donde ha estado en tres ocasiones, los segundos puestos de 2013 y 2015 y el tercero de 2016.

El colombiano tiene ahora por delante en la general a Vingegard, al francés Romain Bardet, segundo en el Tour de 2016 y tercero en el de 2027, que está a 21 segundos, Pogacar a 15 y el británico Geraint Thomas, vencedor del Tour de 2018 a 19.

Quintana indicó que seguirá tratando de arrancar tiempo a sus rivales, aunque dijo que será “cauto” y que buscará “las situaciones que se puedan aprovechar”.

“No vamos a volvernos locos, actuaremos sin tirar cohetes por ahora. Es la primera etapa de alta montaña y mañana nos espera otro gran reto, la carrera se va a mover muy fuerte, esperamos responder bien”, señaló el ciclista del Arkea en referencia a la etapa que acabará en el Alpe d’Huez.

Peor le fue a su compatriota Rigoberto Urán, que entró en meta a más de 28 minutos del ganador y se hundió al puesto 30 a casi 39 minutos del líder.

Quintana señaló que en el Tour de Francia los días malos pueden hacer perder mucho tiempo, como se demostró con el caso de Pogacar, al que ya se daba por ganador y que perdió el maillot amarillo.

“Cuando estás bien tienes que aprovecharlo y cuando estás menos bien aguantar”, señaló el de Arkea.

Col du Granon (Francia), 13 jul (EFE).- El danés Jonas Vingegaard dio este miércoles un golpe de efecto en el Tour de Francia, con una victoria en la cima del Granon, de categoría especial, que le permitió arrebatar el maillot amarillo al esloveno Tadej Pogacar, mientras que el colombiano Nairo Quintana fue segundo.

El subcampeón de la pasada edición atacó al ganador de las dos últimas a falta de menos de 5 kilómetros de meta y puso en evidencia las debilidades que el esloveno no había mostrado en los dos últimos años.

Al término de una etapa en la que el Jumbo de Vingegaard acosó desde el primer kilómetro al líder, el danés, de 25 años, logró su primer triunfo de etapa en el Tour, por delante de un Quintana que entró a un minuto.

Pogacar, con el rostro descompuesto tras un brutal desfallecimiento, entró en meta a 2.51 del danés, por lo que ahora es tercero de la general, a 2.22 del nuevo maillot amarillo, por detrás del francés Romain Bardet, que fue tercero en la meta a 1.10 y que aventaja en seis segundos al esloveno.

Cuarto es el británico Geraint Thomas, ganador en 2018, a 2.26 del líder, mientras que Quintana se coloca quinto a 2.37, por delante del también británico Adam Yates, a 3.06.

El español Enric Mas no pudo seguir el ritmo de los mejores y entró a más de 8 minutos en meta, por lo que ahora es décimo de la general a 9.29.

(CNN Español) -- Nairo Quintana ocupó el sexto lugar en el Tour de Francia de 2022. Se dice fácil, pero el ciclista colombiano, el mejor de la historia de su país y de Latinoamérica, compitió contra más jóvenes y lo hizo tras unas temporadas difíciles. Tiene 32 años y parece decidido a dejar su nombre marcado en la historia del ciclismo mundial, con la conciencia de que en Colombia es un héroe absoluto que puede seguir demostrando mucho con sus piernas.

El 20 de julio no fue una fecha cualquiera para Nairo: más allá del Día de Independencia de Colombia, se cumplieron 9 años exactos del día en que ganó etapa y se coronó campeón de montaña, mejor joven y subcampeón del Tour de Francia en 2013.

Ese día defendió el cuarto lugar después de que el martes subió dos puestos en la clasificación general. Su experiencia en altitud fue clave.

El vencedor del Tour de Francia , Jonas Vingegaard, tiene 25 años. El esloveno Tadej Pogačar, segundo, tiene 23 años. Un ejemplo de la tenacidad y la experiencia es la de Geraint Thomas, de 36 años y quien completó el podio en la gran carrera de este deporte.

Nairo, campeón del Giro de Italia (2014) y de la Vuelta a España (2016), dos veces segundo en el Tour de Francia (2013 y 2015) y una vez segundo del Giro (2017) lleva 5 años sin conseguir podio en una de las tres grandes vueltas del ciclismo del mundo.

Pero este año, ya como un veterano en un deporte muy fiscalizado y exigente, se ha destacado por sus victorias en el Tour La Provence y en el Tour de los Alpes Marítimos y de Var, además de quedar de quinto en las carreras París-Niza y cuarto en la Volta a Cataluña, y ahora por aguantar en el top 10 en medio del calor en la prueba reina del ciclismo mundial.

El colombiano, otrora gran rival de Chris Froome en el Tour de Francia, es uno de los ciclistas más seguidos por el público en la vuelta gala. Tras su paso extenso y exitoso por el Movistar Team, ahora es líder en el equipo francés Arkéa Samsic el deportista de Tunja, Boyacá, quiere volver a la gloria. El esquivo Tour es la carrera que siempre ha querido ganar y ha estado cerca. Quizá sin su impulso en esos subcampeonatos, su compatriota Egan Bernal no habría llegado al título en 2019. Este año Nairo descartó el Giro justamente para apostarle al Tour, como lo confirmó a principios de año Emmanuel Hubert, director del Arkéa.

Nairo fue el segundo ciclista latinoamericano en ganar una gran vuelta, después de su compatriota Lucho Herrera. Ahora lo acompañan el ecuatoriano Richard Carapaz (Giro 2019) y Egan Bernal (Tour 2019 y Giro 2021).

Quintana está en el puesto 62 del Salón de la Fama del Ciclismo de la UCI (el mejor latinoamericano), solo dos puestos detrás del esloveno Primož Roglič, triple ganador de la Vuelta España entre 2019 y 2021, quien en esta edición del Tour de Francia se retiró en la etapa 15.

El boyacense fue el primer ciclista en la historia que obtuvo la camiseta de montaña y la de los jóvenes en un Tour de Francia (en 2013). Además, fue el cuarto ciclista de la historia en conseguir podio en las tres grandes vueltas de forma consecutiva: fue tercero en el Tour 2016, ganador de la Vuelta a España 2016 y segundo en el Giro 2017.

Su hoja de vida es una carrera de triunfos y resistencia. En 2022 Nairo Quintana ha demostrado que no tiene planes en detenerse.

Nairo Quintana linked with 2023 move to French team

Report suggests Colombian will switch Arkéa-Samsic for one of AG2R Citroën, Cofidis, or Groupama-FDJ

Following his announcement on Friday that he would be leaving Arkéa-Samsic at the end of the season, Nairo Quintana has been linked with a move to another French team in the WorldTour.

In a social media post the Colombian said that his three years at the ProTeam would come to an end this year, despite having signed a three-year contract extension back in August.

However, it appears that the deal was never signed and was instead only agreed in principle, meaning that Quintana is free to leave and find a new squad for 2023.

The team confirmed his departure in a short announcement on Saturday, stating, "The Arkéa-Samsic team confirms that Nairo Quintana's contract with the team will not be renewed in 2023."

Despite rumours that the non-renewal of his contract was linked to his ongoing tramadol case and disqualification from the Tour de France , the team made no mention of the affair.

Sunday brought new rumours of Quintana's future, with French newspaper L'Equipe linking him with a French WorldTour team for next season.

The report cited "sources close to the Colombian", noting that a French team had already made him a contract proposal.

Current French WorldTour teams number AG2R Citroën , Cofidis, and Groupama-FDJ , with each squad boasting several spaces for next season. As of yet no other teams have been strongly linked with Quintana's signature.

Quintana is still awaiting the outcome of his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over his Tour de France disqualification. He had returned positive tests for tramadol on two stages of the race, and subsequently missed the Vuelta a España in order to fight his case.

The 32-year-old will not race again in Arkéa-Samsic colours, having brought his season to a close at the UCI Road World Championships last week.

Quintana has unexpectedly become a major name on the transfer market this winter, providing a jolt a market which had been drying up. Other major names yet to decide their future include sprinters Mark Cavendish and Fernando Gaviria.

FLORENCE, Italy (VN) — Nairo Quintana (Movistar), twice second in the Tour de France, has inspected all the important stages of the 2018 edition — what he called “a difficult, a hard route.”

The Colombian is lining up as a race favorite with teammates Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde. They will face four-time Tour winner Chris Froome (Sky), Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale), Rigoberto Urán (EF Education First-Drapac), Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), and Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) as they contend for the yellow jersey.

To be ready, Quintana rode the Roubaix cobbles of stage 9, climbed in the Alps and Pyrenees, and mounted his time trial bike for stage 20.

“The first week is one which instils respect, but it’s all the same for everyone,” Quintana said. [related title=”More Tour de France news” align=”left” tag=”Tour-de-France”]

The race starts July 7 in Vendée with a flat sprint stage. The first phase continues with a team time trial. Stage 9, before the first rest day, the peloton will face 21.7 kilometers over the cobbles as they ride into Roubaix.

“There’s no better or worse rider for such terrain before stage 9, because it’s mainly about good or bad luck. You can struggle, you can suffer from misfortune, but it’s all the same for all competitors,” Quintana said.

“We already saw how Froome was sent home by a crash in 2014, and Contador also falling down and leaving the race a few days later. We know the Tour could come down to such things this year, making you withdrawing or maybe losing much time and having to rekindle your goals for the remainder of the Tour.”

Team boss Eusebio Unzué said the first nine days should probably sort out who will lead Movistar in the overall classification fight. After that, they will need to take control in the big mountains.

“The second half of the Tour — for those climbers who have gotten safely through week one and have good legs — could be good for us, because it’s all big mountains,” Quintana added.

“The strategy will be important, because there will be riders with time losses and things to prove. For any team trying to defend themselves from a leading position it will be harder, because we’re all one man down from previous editions.”

In April, Quintana previewed the Roubaix stage cobbles with Valverde and Landa. After returning from Colombia, he rode some of the climbs he had not yet seen.

The race features a tough new climb, the Plateau des Glières midway through stage 10. Its gradient averages 11.2 percent and it includes pitches of 20 percent. From the HC point at the plateau, the stage continues another two kilometers over lighter gradients on hard-packed gravel to the Col des Glières.

Quintana needed to inspect that climb and some of the others to give himself the best possible chance of taking on Sky and Froome.

“I’ve been able to inspect almost all important stages — I’ve ridden all Alps and Pyrenees stages as well as the time trial on the penultimate day,” Quintana said.

“It’s a difficult Tour, a hard route, where the most important thing will be staying safe and lucky on the first half and strong on the second.”

Quintana is racing his first grand tour after last year’s Tour de France. He finished second in the Giro d’Italia behind Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb), but he suffered in the Tour and finished 12th.

“We really focused our efforts this year on tackling the longer climbs and also improving our consistency on time trials. The main goal was to reach Tour time with fresher legs,” added Quintana.

Quintana won the 2014 Giro and the 2016 Vuelta a España.

“Our goal is winning the Tour. It’s the grand tour I’m still missing in palmarès, one that I’ve always dreamt of,” he said. “We’ve got a great team. Let’s hope we can get safely through the first few days, working together as we’ve always done, and hopefully best our rivals for the victory.”

Cuándo empieza el Tour de Francia 2024: La fecha de comienzo y recorrido de la histórica Gran Vuelta

El Tour de Francia es la carrera de ciclismo más famosa del mundo y la edición 2024 vivirá un hecho histórico al no terminar en París, regla que se había cumplido desde que la competencia comenzó a disputarse en 1903. Los organizadores tomaron esta determinación debido a que la capital recibirá los Juegos Olímpicos desde el viernes 26 de julio.

The Sporting News presenta todos los detalles sobre cuándo empieza y el recorrido en esta oportunidad. En 2023 la victoria quedó en manos del danés  Jonas Vingegaard , que también había festejado en 2022.

Cuándo empieza el Tour de Francia 2024

La 111ª edición del Tour de Francia 2024 comenzará el 29 de junio en Florencia y tendrá su cierre el domingo 21 de julio en Niza. Serán 21 etapas con un recorrido total de 3.492 kilómetros. Así como por primera vez no terminará en París, el inicio en Italia también es inédito. Esta es la 26ª ocasión que empiezan fuera de tierras francesas.

Jonas Vingegaard , que sufrió una fractura de clavícula y de varias costillas a tres meses del inicio, de competir, irá detrás del tercer título en fila y sumarse a la corta lista de los que pudieron lograrlo: estos son Louison Bobet, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Miguel Induráin y Chris Froome.
