Venice Cruise and Stay Holidays

There are 118 islands, 177 canals and 450 bridges in Venice with 170 ancient buildings lining its main waterway, that unforgettable Grand Canal. This colourful and ancient city quite literally ‘floats’ on the water. Criss-crossed by dozens and dozens of waterways, it is also a place that can possibly best be admired from the water.

For cruise passengers, sailing into or out of ‘La Serenissima’, the ancient name for Venice, and through the gorgeous Lagoon of Venice is an awe inspiring experience. As you would expect, the cruise terminals and piers are located outside of the historic centre so you will need transport to get to the heart of everything. Public transportation on the water is possibly the best option and it is not terribly difficult to get to the top spots like the San Marco’s Piazza by water bus.

Top Mediterranean FAQs

Where do Mediterranean cruises go?

Whether you love art, history, natural wonders, fine cuisine, or all of the above, a Mediterranean cruise lets you experience something amazing at every stop. The Mediterranean region is vast, including many countries each with its own personality, cuisine, and scenery.

Celebrity’s Mediterranean cruises sail from Athens, Barcelona, Rome, Southampton, and Ravenna (Venice).

Feel like an old-fashioned movie star on the French Riviera, learn about military history in Malta, explore Biblical history in Israel, and delve back more than 4,000 years in time to Egypt.

How long are Mediterranean cruises?

Mediterranean cruises on Celebrity last from six to 12 nights. Spend seven nights visiting popular ports in Spain, France, and Italy, or longer voyages that include Greece and Turkey.

When’s the best time to cruise?

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean will vary depending on your particular interests and schedule. The main Mediterranean cruise season runs from April through November each year, with June to September the peak months. But with Celebrity you can cruise Europe year round.

July to September is the peak summer season in the Mediterranean, when most Europeans take their summer vacation. April, May, June, later in September, and October are all great months to visit, too. You can sail the Mediterranean with Celebrity right up to November, which is a wonderful time for sightseeing with fewer people around. The best time to head to the far south of the region is from February to April, when the climate is perfect for exploring Israel and Egypt.

What should I pack?

When you’re packing for a Mediterranean cruise, swimwear and beach outfits are essential. You’ll need comfortable shoes for sightseeing, whether this involves walking over uneven cobblestone roads or clambering over the rocky paths of the Acropolis in Athens.

A good sun hat is essential If you want to visit churches, synagogues, and cathedrals we recommend long pants or skirt and a scarf/shawl to cover your shoulders.

If you’re traveling at the beginning or the end of the season, the weather could be cool, so bring cover-ups and a light waterproof jacket.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What can I see while I’m there?

From the history-lined canals of Venice to the sun-soaked playgrounds of the French Riviera to the iconic architecture of Spain, our array of award-winning Europe vacations offers something special for every discerning world traveler.

Get up close to historic sites like the ancient Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens, and the charming Old City of Dubrovnik. Take stellar photos at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. See Michelangelo’s remarkable Renaissance artwork on the Sistine Chapel ceiling as you tour Vatican City.

In Portugal, experience the spectacular medieval architecture in Lisbon and taste a variety of Port wines in Porto. Explore our port of call in Italy, Trieste, and its ancient architecture, lively cultural scene, and Venetian-inspired coffeehouses. We’re also returning to Kusadasi, and Istanbul in Turkey.

Some of the most beautiful natural sights you’ll ever see may be the view of the whitewashed buildings and turquoise waters in Santorini or the pastel-colored fishing villages in the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Where are the best beaches?

The Mediterranean is fringed with  dazzlingly beautiful beaches . Here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world, wild dunes, craggy cliffs, rocky coves, and aquamarine shallows on others.

For long sweeps of sand, great watersports, and a lively scene, try Mykonos. If black or red sand intrigues you, head for Santorini. For old-fashioned glamor, visit the beaches around Italy’s Amalfi Coast or the chic beach towns along the French Riviera.

Sardinia arguably has the most beautiful turquoise water. Ibiza is fringed with pretty coves, some sleepy, some with cool beach bars and DJs spinning tunes all afternoon.

What is there for families to do on a Mediterranean cruise?

The Mediterranean is fantastic for families. It’s educational, it brings history to life, the shopping is great, the ice cream unsurpassed, and the beaches superb. Mediterranean cultures love kids, too, and children are welcomed everywhere.

Families can enjoy the Colosseum in Rome, gondola rides in Venice, the old walls of Dubrovnik, and cable cars for stunning city views or off-road buggy experiences. You can also experience Pompeii, the cave houses of Matera, and for soccer fans, Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.

Should I book tours ahead of time?

If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions around the Mediterranean are extremely popular.

Booking a shore excursion  with Celebrity also means you’ll be visiting attractions with a professional guide, and on a tour that guarantees to return you to the ship on time.

Whether you're looking for a private, customizable experience, a carefully curated guided tour with a small group, or an unforgettable trip to iconic local landmarks, we have the right option to discover any destination, granting in-depth knowledge, expertise, and a truly extraordinary experience.

Can I get around with English?

Many languages are spoken around the Mediterranean, from Maltese to French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, and Hebrew. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak some English.

Do I need a visa?

You will need a passport to travel to the Mediterranean, but the vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

Best Mediterranean cruises in 2024 and 2025

Fran Golden

The Mediterranean region has it all — amazing food and wine, famous historical and cultural landmarks, scenic seaside towns and gorgeous island beaches.

You'd be hard-pressed to experience Spain , France , Italy and Greece on one land tour without transportation issues. A Mediterranean cruise, however, is the perfect way to get a taste of many coastal countries with ease; you can transit between destinations while you sleep aboard your ship.

Most cruise lines operate trips in the Mediterranean over the summer, whether on tiny ships with a few hundred passengers or giant megaships with several thousand people. Some vessels even sail the region year-round.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Most Mediterranean cruises focus on one region (usually the eastern or western halves of the coastline), but longer itineraries might encompass more. While choosing a ship is important, so is picking which route to take and which countries you want to see.

Consider what's on your bucket list. Cruise lines offer a variety of options, making it possible for culture vultures, beach lovers, history buffs and family travelers to prioritize different ports of call and onboard amenities.

Here are some of the best Mediterranean cruises departing in 2024 and 2025 to whet your appetite for a European adventure by sea.

Best cruise for romantics: Windstar Cruises in the rivieras

med cruise and stay

For romance seekers, few experiences beat a cruise that lingers along the French and Italian rivieras. France's Cote d'Azur, with its coastal mountains and crystal blue sea, has inspired artists and romantics for centuries. The equally stunning Italian coast is perfect for a romantic stroll around secluded harbors and an indulgent, delectable lunch at a table for two overlooking the ocean.

Another popular port of call on riviera itineraries is Monaco, where you might visit the royal palace of the Grimaldi family and stop by the glamorous Monte Carlo Casino to pretend you are James Bond enjoying a night on the town.

Related: Western Mediterranean vs. Eastern Mediterranean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

You'll find these cruises on small and luxury ships. Our pick for romance is Windstar Cruises ' seven-night "Yachtsman's Harbors of the Rivieras" sailing between Rome and Barcelona (or vice versa) on multiple spring, summer and fall dates in 2024 and 2025.

The five-masted Wind Surf is as picture-perfect as the ports you'll visit, and the 342-passenger ship can follow all the luxury yachts into smaller harbors and off-the-beaten-track destinations. Your onboard meals, with many dishes created by James Beard-affiliated chefs, might even rival the fresh Mediterranean cuisine you'll find in port.

Ports of call vary by sailing date but can include Port-Vendres, Sanary-sur-Mer and Cannes, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; and Portofino and Portoferraio, Italy. For the ultimate riviera experience, book one of Windstar's Prix du Monde sailings with exclusive access to the Formula One racing events.

Best cruise for budget-conscious travelers: Celestyal Cruises in the Greek islands

med cruise and stay

Visiting the Greek islands is a magical experience. Lessons in ancient history and the development of Western civilization come to life surrounded by astounding natural beauty.

Your jaw might drop as your ship navigates the sunken caldera that leads to Santorini, where whitewashed villages dot the tops of steep cliffs. In Mykonos, you can head to one of the island's famous beaches or catch a ferry to explore the ancient ruins of Delos, known as the birthplace of Apollo. Budget-conscious travelers can skip the tours and stroll the narrow streets and city walls Rhodes' Old Town.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise tips to enhance your European vacation

For less pricey ways to see the Greek islands, consider Celestyal Cruises ; it sails three- and four-night minicruises in addition to affordable one-week sailings. A four-night cruise packs a lot into a short sailing with visits to Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion and Santorini, as well as Kusadasi, Turkey. Don't forget to spend time in Athens before or after your cruise.

Celestyal's two ships carry between 1,200 and 1,700 passengers. You'll enjoy all the amenities of a large cruise ship — such as multiple pools, restaurants and bars, and spa and fitness facilities — without feeling inundated with many thousands of fellow cruisers.

Best cruise for history lovers: Viking in the Eastern Mediterranean

med cruise and stay

Eastern Mediterranean cruises of a week or more immerse you in multiple ancient civilizations. They take you to the historical places you have traveled to see, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Extraordinary itineraries visit Athens for the Acropolis, Istanbul for the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace, and Kusadasi for the impressive ancient city of Ephesus and sites associated with the Virgin Mary. Dubrovnik, Croatia's medieval Old Town (a filming location for HBO's "Game of Thrones") will wow you. From Naples, Italy, you can explore the ancient city of Pompeii.

Cruises that start or end in Rome will treat you to such sights as the Colosseum and the Vatican.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

True history lovers will not be satisfied with only a week in this rich landscape. Choose Viking for your Eastern Mediterranean cruise, and look for longer itineraries, such as the 15-day "Ancient Mediterranean Antiquities" sailings throughout 2024, 2025 and 2026. The one-way sailing between Rome and Istanbul hits most of the ancient civilization highlights: Naples and Sicily, Italy; Rhodes, Crete and Athens, Greece; and Ephesus, Troy and Istanbul, Turkey.

Viking also offers complimentary shore excursions in every port, so you'll have access to knowledgeable guides who can explain the historical sites you're touring. On board, you'll find a comfortable home base on Viking's 930-passenger identical ships, with multiple included dining venues, inviting lounges with Scandinavian-inspired decor, and comfortable cabins with thoughtful details, such as quiet-closing drawers and heated bathroom floors.

Best cruise for explorers: Celebrity Cruises in the Holy Land

med cruise and stay

Note: Many cruise lines have altered Holy Land itineraries for 2024 to exclude Israel or canceled the sailings completely. However, most lines still have Holy Land voyages, including Israel, on their schedules for 2025.

Travelers who really want to double down on the ancient civilizations should look for longer Eastern Mediterranean cruises that combine Greece, Turkey and Italy with port calls in Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Depending on the specific Holy Land itinerary, you might see Cairo and the pyramids of Giza, Jordan's ancient rose-hewed rock city of Petra, and biblical locations in and around Jerusalem.

Celebrity Cruises is a terrific choice for your Holy Land cruise, as the company offers 10- and 11-night Egypt and Israel sailings. For example, a 10-night, round-trip Athens cruise visits Haifa and Ashdod, Israel (for Jerusalem) and Alexandria, Egypt; it has overnights in each port except Haifa. The extra time in port allows for overnight tours, so you can venture farther into each country to see all the key sites. The 11-night version adds a stop in Kusadasi for a visit to Ephesus.

Celebrity's ships are known for their foodie culture, with multiple specialty restaurants, as well as a happening bar scene. (Do not miss the martini flights.) With a range of rooms, from windowless inside cabins to comfortable suites, you can tour the Holy Land at any price point.

Best cruise for culture vultures: Norwegian Cruise Line in the Western Mediterranean

med cruise and stay

For foodies, fashionistas and art lovers, it's hard to top a Western Mediterranean cruise to the renowned resort towns and famed coastal cities of Italy, France and Spain.

This is your opportunity to see Antoni Gaudi's fantastical Sagrada Familia church and other creations in Barcelona; visit Michelangelo's David sculpture and other Renaissance treasures in Florence, Italy; learn about the iconic film festival in dreamy Cannes, France; and stroll through the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik.

You can shop for Italian, French and Spanish designer fashion when you're not dining on the best Italian pasta and gelato you've ever tasted (or bouillabaisse and escargot in France, or paella and tapas in Spain). All are accompanied by local wines, of course.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of Western Mediterranean cruises to key ports in Spain, Italy and France. Norwegian Escape sails the Mediterranean in the spring and fall of 2025. It offers 10- and 11-night cruises that call on a variety of major ports.

For example, 11-night cruises on select dates in 2025 sail from Barcelona to Trieste, Italy. They visit Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Cannes; Florence, Rome, Naples and Taormina (Messina), Italy; Valletta, Malta; Corfu, Greece; and Dubrovnik and Split, Croatia.

It's a shame that the itinerary has no sea days because the ship offers plenty to keep cruisers busy on board. There's a wealth of dining options, from a French date-night restaurant to a tapas bar. There's also a water park, a ropes course and a spa with a salt room and a snow room.

Best cruise for families: Royal Caribbean in the Mediterranean

med cruise and stay

When looking for a cruise with children , you'll want to have a mix of time exploring on land and time playing on the ship. Ships offer kids clubs as well as attractions like video arcades and waterslides. Look for an itinerary that includes one or more fun-filled days at sea.

Kids will enjoy such sights as the Colosseum, where they might pretend that they are gladiators; the flower market in Nice, France; and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (on a shore excursion from Livorno, Italy). They will also enjoy visiting the beaches in the Greek islands and eating pizza in Naples. If you can find a cruise that includes the Italian seaside villages of Cinque Terre (accessible from Genoa, Livorno and Portofino), fans of Disney's animated feature "Luca" will be ecstatic.

Family favorite Royal Caribbean has a variety of ships and itineraries sailing around Europe, but a top option for 2025 is a seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise aboard Allure of the Seas. The round-trip itinerary departs from Rome. Additional ports of call include Naples and La Spezia, Italy (for Florence); Palma de Mallorca; and Marseille, France.

Family-friendly entertainment on board is plentiful. On sea days, you can access three main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

For more than 2,000 years, these azure waters have provided a valuable connective route for both trade and travelers. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

nacho_gutierrez/Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

If the biggest luxury is convenience, Scenic is among the top cruise lines to pick. The Australian-based company features all-inclusive trips — no upgraded drinks package needed — on a 228-passenger, all-suite ship for an intimate experience. Guests can travel in six-star luxury with a personal butler assigned to each cabin. Turn to helicopters (and even a submersible) for a different view of a destination.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Escape: Spain & the French Riviera

This eight-day itinerary moves along the coast of Spain to the French Riviera. With stops in hallmark ports such as Barcelona, St. Tropez, and Monte Carlo, there's no need to worry about missing out on these popular destinations. Quiet, less-visited ports include Costa Brava's Roses and Villefranche-sur-Mer just outside of Nice. Take to the sky for an aerial view of Sanary-sur-Mer inside Scenic Eclipse 's private helicopter. On the island of Corsica, visit the historic citadel and old town, which Napoleon Bonaparte freed from Italian rule in 1791. This journey spans the bright lights of elegant cities to quiet, luxurious beaches, giving travelers the best of both.

Michel Verdure/Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn cruises are made for those who enjoy a touch of grandeur. The cruise line offers all-inclusive options, making it easy to relax on board and just enjoy the ride. A wide range of Mediterranean destinations and cruise lengths, from seven to 30 days, means everyone can find the right fit.

Trip to Try:  7-day Classic Greek Isles and Ephesus

The weeklong trip on the Seabourn Encore offers a glimpse of a few of Greece’s best islands. Departing from Athens, the journey stops in Patmos, Agios, Mykonos, and Skiathos. The itinerary sprinkles in a few Turkish delights, including Kusadasi and Bozcaada, before disembarking in Istanbul. Excursions include guided tours of historical sites like the Grotto of St. John in Patmos and wine tastings in Bozcaada.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Edgardo Contreras/Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Synonymous with luxury and comfort, The Ritz-Carlton's superyachts are an extension of the company's hotels. Each of the three boats can accommodate around 400 passengers with its smallest ship, Evrima , holding just 298 people. Fine dining abounds on board with five restaurants and six lounges to choose from. Guests can expect plush furnishings and modern design. Though all rooms are terrace suites, there are also two-story loft suites and owner's suites with spacious private terraces.

Trip to Try: Evrima Barcelona to Barcelona

Travelers will see the western Mediterranean on a six-night, round-trip voyage to Barcelona. After departing the lively Spanish city, settle into a suite and enjoy the yacht's amenities with a full day at sea. In Gibraltar, venture to Gorham's Cave, which dates to the days of Neanderthals. The ship returns to the Spanish coast with stops in Málaga (Picasso's hometown), Cartagena with its notable Roman ruins, and the picturesque island of Ibiza.

Viking Cruises

White Rain/Viking Cruises

Those looking for an adults-only option will find exactly what they need with Viking Cruises. Since the company's offerings are strictly for guests ages 18 and up, you can expect a mature cruising environment. With itineraries ranging from western Europe to holy lands on the eastern Mediterranean, finding a cruise that fits your travel desires is a snap. The cruise line offers free shore excursions, enabling guests to fully experience the ports.

Trip to Try:  Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn

Spend 22 days with Viking on the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn. The trip takes guests to seven countries including Greece, Montenegro, and Monaco, with stops in both major and smaller ports. Enhance the journey by booking additional excursions tailored to specific interests such as architecture or cuisine. Book pre- and post-trip stays to further explore ports of call.

Explora Journeys

Launched by the Aponte family, the founders of shipping and cruise company MSC Group, Explora Journeys offers high-end vacations with uncompromising, livable cruise ship cabins, which are more like small apartments. With a maritime heritage in the region that stretches back to the 17th century, the family has carefully selected ports that reflect their own travels.

Trip to Try: A Journey to UNESCO Malta & Balearic Bliss

Spend 10 days sailing across the western Mediterranean aboard an all-suite ship designed with clean, simple lines. Bookended by Rome and Barcelona, this voyage includes stops at classic Italian destinations such as Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia. But what sets it apart from other Mediterranean itineraries are stops in Malta, Tunisia, and Menorca. Sicily's best beaches, fortified walls, and whitewashed mosques are just a few of the varied landscapes guests will see. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the spacious suites, penthouses, ocean residences (up to 1,064 square feet), and multiroom owner's suites make cruising feel like home.

Azamara is a sumptuous option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The company also emphasizes hyperlocal experiences that allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, and culture at ports, if only for a day. There are a variety of destinations and trip lengths, including 10-, 12-, and 15-night voyages, some of which include overnight stays in ports so guests can get the full scope of a destination.

Trip to Try:   11-night Egypt/Israel Intensive Voyage

Make your way through four counties (Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, and Greece) on this 11-night adventure. The voyage emphasizes the region’s dramatic history, highlighting destinations ruled by famed pharaohs, kings, and emperors. Shore excursion options include exploring the famed Acropolis of Athens, seeing the biblical destinations of Nazareth and Galilee, and simply soaking in the ambience of Limassol, a city on the southern coast of Cyprus, for an entire day.

Emerald Cruises

Cultural experiences are central to Emerald Cruises. Whether you enjoy private performances from local musicians or active adventures like hiking to a city's fortified walls, guests aboard these sleek yachts will see the best of a destination. No need to worry about tipping, upgrading a drinks package, or purchasing standard excursions; the fare is all-inclusive. Onboard accommodations range from spacious, minimalist rooms with an ocean view to yacht suites featuring a private terrace with lounge chairs.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Enchantment

Journey from Athens, home of the Acropolis, to Croatia's renowned walled city, Dubrovnik, during this seven-night trip. Emerald notably does not skip over Albania, though there are plenty of stops along Greece's west coast and nearby islands. One of its coastal towns, Sarandë, features stunning lapis waters and serves as a gateway to UNESCO-recognized Butrint. Other notable tours include the ruins of Corfu and Kotor's walls.

Oceania Cruises

Want personalized service at every turn? Book an Oceania cruise. With a low guest-to-crew member ratio, your every need is easily met. Mediterranean sailings include seven-, 12-, 21-, and even 30-day cruises for those who can’t get enough. With this company, you’re almost spoiled with choices, making it hard to pick just one itinerary. So maybe, think about this year’s trip — and next year's.

Trip to Try:   Monte Carlo to Athens

The 10-day trip takes travelers through affluent ports, including visits to Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez, Florence, Rome, Valletta, Rhodes, and Athens. From the old villages to the glittering casinos, this journey's shore excursions abound. There’s plenty to do on board too, including wine tastings, guest lectures, and fun-filled trivia nights with fellow guests.

Celebrity Cruises

Bernard Biger, Chantiers de l'Atlantique/Celebrity Cruises

Travelers vacationing with the entire family — from children to grandparents — should check out Celebrity Cruises and the 16 ships that make up its fleet . With ample options for everyone on board (think kids clubs to casinos), varied shore excursions, and affordable pricing, these trips are viable for larger groups.

Trip to Try:   Best of Italy and Croatia

The 11-night trip takes guests to 10 ports through Italy and Croatia, providing varied terrain and plentiful shore excursion options. Visit beautiful seaside towns like Portofino, explore the fortified walls of Dubrovnik, and enjoy the ship's amenities during days at sea.

wellsie82/Getty Images

Silversea is tailor-made for those who like to cruise with fewer passengers on board. The line offers ships with 51 to 364 suites, which enables more personalized service and refined amenities. It also offers packages to reduce the stress that comes with pay-as-you-go travel.

Trip to Try:   Venice to Athens

This 11-day trip makes its way through 11 ports in four countries, including Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. Walk cobblestone streets, see the distinctive windmills of Santorini, discover buzzing nightlife and secluded beaches on the Croatian island of Hvar, and more. On board, dine in one of the ship’s restaurants, take a dip in the pool, or lounge in a common space to discuss the day’s adventure with fellow guests.

A lavish French cruise line, Ponant has been sailing since 1988. Today, the small boats, Ponant Explorers, are outfitted with just 92 suites that can serve no more than 184 travelers. Throughout the boat, guests will find light-filled spaces and cozy cabins. These ships feature Blue Eye, an unusual lounge set below sea level for an underwater view of the ship's surroundings. From polar expeditions to countries nestled along the Mediterranean, Ponant is a reliable option for those seeking an immersive experience.

Trip to Try: Ancient Wonders and Culinary Delights: Cruising Southern Italy and Sicily

Partnered with Smithsonian Journeys, Ponant offers a gourmand's Italian dream on this eight-day cruise. This trip begins in Valletta, Malta, before sailing to Sicily and up the Italian coastline to Livorno. Guests can drink volcanic wines in Taormina, eat Neapolitan pizza in Naples, and see fresh mozzarella made in Agropoli. Back on board, a guest chef prepares destination-inspired dishes. In addition to Italy's culinary delights, there are plenty of opportunities to see classic sites such as the Vatican and the Trevi Fountain.

Holland America

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Holland America Line

Holland America doesn’t have the wide-ranging options like other cruise lines on this list, however, the sailings it does offer are top-notch. Cabins range from 151-square-foot interior staterooms to 712-square-foot suites to stretch out in.

Trip to Try:  14-Day Adriatic Dream

The 14-day trip includes stops in Italy (including Venice, Sicily, Amalfi, and Rome), Greece (including Katakolon, Souda, and Mykonos), Albania, and Malta (including Valletta and Mgarr). Take advantage of the ship’s luxurious spa on days at sea with the bonus of rocking waves that lull you into tranquility.

Princess Cruises

Danny Lehman/Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is another that may not have a massive selection of Mediterranean options, but the line more than makes up for it with stellar excursions, plentiful onboard entertainment, and kids and teen programming. Sink into the plush beds, which were created in collaboration with a sleep expert, for a great night's rest to feel fully recharged.

Trip to Try:  10-day Mediterranean and Israel

The 10-day trip stops in six ports across Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. It offers dozens of shore excursions to take part in, including historical tours, vineyard tours and wine tastings, local market visits, and much more. Room options range from interior staterooms to massive premium suites with oversized balconies.

Cunard Line

moisseyev/Getty Images

Classically elegant, Cunard Line is the cruise to choose if style is your top priority. Its boats are opulent, including the Queen Elizabeth , which features art deco-influenced interiors and plush sundeck furnishings. Of course, high-end dining experiences are included.

Trip to Try:  Western Mediterranean

Take the seven-night journey on Cunard’s Western Mediterranean cruise from England to Italy. Visit Seville from Cadiz, see Gaudí's architecture in Barcelona, tour Napoleon Bonaparte's childhood home on the island of Corsica, and shop your way through Rome. With several days at sea, you can make the most of onboard amenities.

Virgin Voyages

There's no doubt that Virgin Voyages is a departure from traditional cruising. With plush cabins and the promise of a party atmosphere, the cruise line has ditched many industry mainstays. Instead, guests will find PJ parties, pop-up circus installations, and open seating for over 20 meals designed by Michelin-starred chefs.

Trip to Try: The Irresistible Med

When you set sail on The Irresistible Med from Barcelona to Ibiza, there are plenty of opportunities to explore beaches, museums, and historic sites. For those hoping to visit the quaint villages of Provence, the French port of Toulon provides an easy access point. Other stops include Marina di Carrara, known for its sumptuous marble, and the island of Corsica. Enjoy a day of relaxation by sweating it out in the sauna or lounging poolside when out at sea. Ibiza is the final port-of-call, which gives guests plenty of time to enjoy the party capital on their own.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean is the one to choose for groups with varied interests. Think, kids who want to play all day, adults who want to lounge by the pool, friends who want to take a historical tour, or those who want to stay up enjoying the onboard entertainment. It's also one of the few cruise lines to offer Mediterranean options for those short on time or who want to add a quick sailing to a longer trip.

Trip to Try:  Three-Night Western Mediterranean

Spend three perfect days sailing from Rome to Barcelona. The quick cruise is a great way to hit the water if you want to spend a weekend at sea on an otherwise land-bound trip. With a day in Naples, and access to Capri, check out a few shore excursions, or go it alone, knowing you have a comfortable place to call home each night.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean

Y ou might think the best time to cruise the Mediterranean would be summer because that's when the most ships are cruising in Europe. However, I'd argue that other times of the year are better.

Ships cruise in the Med year-round, so there's never a time when you can't cruise at all. You'll find the most ships and itinerary choices in summer during peak season and the fewest during winter's offseason. Spring and fall are considered the shoulder seasons when the Mediterranean cruise season is gearing up or winding down.

Considering price, weather, crowds and choices of ships and ports, I believe the best time to cruise the Mediterranean is during the shoulder season. Specifically, I prefer April. As your decision might be based on entirely different factors, let's dive into the variables to determine the best time for you to head to the region and hop on a cruise ship.

Introduction to Mediterranean geography

The Mediterranean Sea consists of 11 smaller seas. Shopping for Mediterranean cruises can be confusing because some cruise lines like to label their itineraries according to the smaller sea names.

You might find cruises to the Adriatic, between Italy's east coast and the central European countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania; these will take you to ports such as Venice, Italy, and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Aegean cruises traverse the large open sea between Greece and Turkey and go as far south as Crete, with stops in Athens and Santorini in Greece and Istanbul in Turkey. Sailings through the Ionian Sea, located between the sole of Italy's boot and western Greece, bring you to the Italian island of Sicily and the Greek island of Corfu.

All of these cruise destinations are considered Mediterranean, along with Monaco, the southern coasts of France and Spain and even Israel (note that some cruise lines have canceled port calls to Israel for 2024 due to the conflict in Israel and Palestine). Ports in Portugal are also included in Mediterranean cruise itineraries. Even though it doesn't have any coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, Portugal is considered part of the Mediterranean region.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean based on choices of ships and itineraries

Cruise lines that sail the region all year include Viking , MSC Cruises , Costa Cruises , Celestyal Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line . But while you might be able to cruise the Mediterranean in winter, your choice of ports is somewhat limited. We found no sailings to the popular ports of Corfu, Dubrovnik or Koper, Slovenia, in December or January.

Most of the winter offerings cruise the western ports of Italy, plus France and westward to Barcelona. A handful of longer itineraries sail from Athens or include Istanbul, western Turkey, Israel and even Alexandria, Egypt. Among popular cruise lines, only Viking includes stops in Santorini in winter, and only Costa offers cruises that include Venice in winter. Norwegian's winter Mediterranean itineraries are focused on Spain and Portugal.

Spring and early summer bring more ships and more port choices. Beginning in March, we found dozens of ships scheduled to visit Venice, Corfu and Santorini. Holland America , Princess Cruises , Seabourn , Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises all have ships ready to sail the Med in March. In April, the list of mainstream, premium and luxury lines cruising Mediterranean waters grows larger and includes Windstar , Royal Caribbean , Silversea and Celebrity Cruises .

By June, the choice of cruise lines and itineraries is at its peak. Among the mainstream lines, only Carnival Cruise Line is still absent in June, opting instead to sail a short season of nine- to 11-night cruises in September and October.

Most ships stay in Europe through summer before beginning a global dispersion between October and November. Disney Cruise Line is the first to leave, with its last summer Mediterranean sailing usually falling in July. Celebrity is among the last to leave, often continuing its Mediterranean cruises well into December and even January, incorporating the holiday season.

If your dream is to see Venice or Santorini or to cruise with one of the mainstream lines, you can rule out winter but should find ample choices between March and October. By the end of November, the number of ships calling at Mediterranean ports has dropped to winter levels.

The best time for a Mediterranean sailing based on prices and crowds

If your ideal Mediterranean cruise doesn't include crowds, winter is a good choice, other than December holiday weeks. But most travelers will prefer a little more warmth and a larger choice of ports while still prioritizing a good price and lighter crowds.

Across the board, from mainstream to luxury, Mediterranean cruise fares peak in June, July and August. Prices for big-ship cruises varied by as much as $60 per person, per night between spring and summer sailings. On luxury lines like Silversea, spring cruise fares were hundreds of dollars cheaper per person, per night compared to summer fares. March sees an upward tick in rates due to spring break travel. The best deals we found outside of winter fell in April and November.

To decide what crowds would look like in various months, we looked at two popular ports where the effect of multiple ships is felt the most — Santorini and Venice. Visit Santorini in June or July, and you will find yourself fighting for breathing room among as many as 15,000 other cruise ship passengers.

Compare that with an April or November stop there, where the daily cruise passenger load tops out at around 3,000. We found days in April when only one or two midsize ships were scheduled to be in port.

I've been to Santorini when four midsize ships (approximately 5,000 passengers) were in port and found it challenging to walk through the narrow maze of shops, restaurants and hotels. It was crowded enough that I was concerned about returning to the ship on time because the lines at the cable car that takes cruise passengers down the cliffs to the tender dock were so long. With 15,000 people in port, I don't know how you'd be able to walk through town at all. Santorini is a decent-size island, but most of the things cruisers want to see are perched on the narrow rim of the cliffs.

Venice has recently cut back on its cruise tourism capacity, in part by forcing some ships to dock in alternate ports and bring guests to the city by bus. We included passenger counts from Venice, Trieste and Ravenna, Italy, and found June numbers as high as 6,000 passengers arriving but as low as 4,000. Cruise passenger arrivals in April are typically below 3,000 per day. The numbers are lower than Santorini — but then, Venice has a far more complicated crowd control scenario.

If avoiding high prices and crowd congestion is your priority, rule out the summer months and stick with either winter or the shoulder seasons of spring and fall.

The best time to cruise the Med based on weather

Temperatures remain moderate across most of the Mediterranean year-round, but even Istanbul can be chilly, with an average high temperature of 48 degrees in January. Athens, Rome, Barcelona and most of the Greek islands see temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s in December and January, warming slightly in February.

Summer temperatures can be brutal in the larger cities. Athens regularly reaches 90 degrees and higher in July and August. Rome and Barcelona average roughly 2 degrees cooler than that in summer.

Rain is more common across the Mediterranean in October and November than most other months, but the average monthly rainfall, even in fall, is 3 inches or less. The northern ports in the Adriatic see a bit more rain than most of the Med. Don't forget the famed Acqua Alta, or mega-tides in Venice, which will leave you sloshing through St. Mark's Square in rubber boots. Though a genuinely rare occurrence, the high tides are most likely to happen in November and December, making them a concern when booking a cruise on one of the handful of ships with November stops in Venice.

If chilly, hot or wet weather is a deciding factor for your Mediterranean cruise, rule out January, February and December for the chill, July and August for the heat and October, November and December for rain and tides. That leaves March, April, May, June and September as the best weather months for cruising in the Mediterranean.

Bottom line

Everyone has their own reasoning for the timing of a cruise. Yours might include traveling while school is out or maximizing time at the beach. Perhaps you are loyal to one particular cruise line or have your heart set on cruising on a newly launched ship.

Whatever your reasons, there is not a bad time to cruise the Mediterranean. My favorite is April for the confluence of reasonable fares, pleasant weather, manageable crowds and an abundance of itinerary and ship choices, but I have loved sailings in other months as well.

My advice is simple: Even if I think shoulder season months are the best time to cruise the Mediterranean, go when it works best for you and your travel partners. Because a dream cruise in Europe, even with less-than-ideal weather or annoying crowds, is better than no cruise at all.

The Kremlin as we know it today was rebuilt as a stone structure during the beginning of the 14th century but the actual site has been inhabited and used as a fortified city wall for centuries before this period. The Kremlin is truly a fascinating structure - at the same time it is an ancient tower, the city's former military fortification, a palace and the workplace of the Russian President. The Kremlin is the center of Russia's political life and State power and has been home to Tsars, General Secretaries of the Soviet Union and Russian Presidents.

Moscow  is Russia's political and financial capital as well as a major world class cultural center. The city includes many must see attractions from the Kremlin and Red Square to the Assumption Cathedral. Moscow is the largest city in Europe. It is unique in that it blends the ancient with the modern. See medieval structures among modern office buildings, walk down crooked old city streets opening up to wide, busy boulevards. It is a fantastic city and truly a site that shouldn't be missed.

Uglich : You will be taken on a walking city tour with visit to the  Kremlin , the  Church of St. Demitrius on the Blood  and the  Transfiguration cathedral .

Uglich  was founded in 1148 as a small princedom bordering on Muscovy and is one of the most beloved towns in Old Russia. The view of the town as you approach it from the Volga River is breathtaking with the Cathedral of the Resurrection and St. John's Church rising on the horizon. The history of the town is fascinating; At the end of the 16th century, Maria Nagaya, seventh wife of Ivan the Terrible, lived in honorary exile at the Kremlin in Uglich. It was here in her garden that the 10 year old Prince Dmitry of the Rurik Dynasty, heir to the Russian throne was murdered by Boris Godunov who wanted to seize power for himself. On the spot of his death, the Church of St. Demitrius of the Blood was built and still stands today. The death of Prince Dmitri brought on the start of the Time of Troubles, a dynastic and political crises and one of the most tumultuous periods in Russian history which ended 15 years later after the election of a new Tsar, Mikhail Romanov (the first Tsar of the Romanov Dynasty). Inside the Kremlin the oldest building in Uglich, the Palace of Tsarevich Dmitry also stands. During your time in Uglich you will learn more about the town's past and walk along the paths of Russian history.

Arrival in the ancient village of  Goritsy . Tour of the  St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery  and the  Museum of Icons .

Goritsy  is a tiny settlement 7 kilometers from the St. Cyril on the White Lake Monastery. The remains of the Nunnery of the Resurrection that sits on the banks of the Sheksna River can be visited and is within a quarter of a mile of where the ship stops. Goritsy is definitely a site to see for anyone with an interest in Russian history. St. Cyril on the White Lake was founded in 1397 by Kirill Belosersky on the shore of Lake Siverskoye. The monastery had wide trade in the 15th to 17th centuries and was used as a fortress to protect Russia's nobility during the Times of Troubles.

After the tour you will return to your ship and set sail in the direction of St. Petersburg along the Volga Baltic Canal. The Volga Baltic Canal is a series of canals and rivers that connect the Volga river to the Baltic Sea.

You'll cruise along Europe's second largest lake,  Lake Onega  and arrive on the island of  Kizhi . Here you will visit a fascinating open-air museum containing numerous examples of elaborate Russian, wooden architecture.

Kizhi Island : Via the Volga Baltic Canal, our cruise takes us to the tiny island of Kizhi, located at the northern end of Lake Onega. The island is renowned for its open-air  Museum of Architecture , which is assembled from over 80 monuments of wooden architecture from various areas of the country and restored to form a glimpse of the past. The most impressive site on the island is the  Church of the Transfiguration or Preobrazhenskaya  (the church of twenty-two wooden domes). This masterpiece of architecture, featuring five tiers of 22 domes, was built in 1714 without the use of a single nail, only an axe and pine trees. The church magically changes color as the day grows old, it is certainly one of the most interesting things you will see during your time in Russia.

We will have a fantastic barbeque picnic on the banks of the river featuring one of Russia's favorite specialties - shashlik (meat shish kebab prepared on an outdoor fire). You will love it!

Mandrogui  is really more of a living museum than a live-in village. It features a collection of old wooden houses and is geared towards showing visitors what a traditional Russian village resembled in the past. One of the features here is the Vodka Museum, which contains thousands of different brands and types of Russia's favorite pastime.

The Hermitage

Arrival in the imperial capital of Russia -  St. Petersburg . Your time in St. Petersburg will begin with a  Panoramic City Tour . There you will see some of the city's most interesting architectural monuments including the Kazan Cathedral (exterior) and the Winter Palace. One of the highlights of your entire cruise will be a visit to the  Hermitage , Russia's premier museum containing one of the largest art collections in the world. The museum consists of five historical buildings including the Winter Palace - the residence of the Russian Tsars. The museum contains over 3 million pieces of art with dates ranging from high antiquity to the present day. Among the Hermitage's treasures are artworks by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens and many others.

On the last day of your cruise you will say goodbye to Russia, your ship's crew and the many new friends we are sure you will have met during your time with us. We are sure that your memories of the trip will last a lifetime and we look forward to welcoming you to Russia sometime in the future. Our driver will meet you at the ship and take you to the airport to see you off (transfer is optional).

St. Petersburg  is Russia's second largest and second most important city - the Northern capital of the country, Russia's cultural center, and considered the world's 'Northern Venice' due to its extensive system of canals and islands. Walk along Nevsky Prospect and experience the grandeur of pre-revolutionary imperial Russia. Pass palaces from the past and gaze at the famous embankment of the Neva River with its numerous bridges and striking architecture. St. Petersburg is also home to Russia's largest and busiest port and with its many world class theaters and museums has a very high level of cultural life.

The trick to avoiding cruise passengers at the Med’s busiest ports

Overtourism has become a 21st-century curse, turning the joy of travel into an intolerable endurance as tourist hotspots flounder under a flood of visitors.

Cruise lines are regularly singled out as the main culprits of this unsatisfactory state of affairs and are the easiest and most obvious target, despite the continuing growth of budget flights and meteoric rise of Airbnb.

However, it’s impossible to ignore the impact of larger cruise ships when they pull into ports to disgorge thousands of passengers for the day, as anyone who’s queued for the cable car at Santorini’s capital Fira can testify when even one or two are in town.

It is estimated that nearly 11 million cruise passengers will visit popular Mediterranean destinations this July and August, with some of the most sought-after spots attracting up to 25,000 a day.

An unlikely source, in the shape of sustainable women’s clothing brand Nomad the Label , has crunched the numbers, looking at cruise schedules in ports including Dubrovnik, Santorini, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona , to calculate the busiest and quietest days in each.

This has enabled the company to pinpoint the best and worst times to visit, including precious days when no ships are scheduled to dock, thus enabling other travellers to avoid the worst crowds, or conversely when multiple ships are due, bringing thousands of extra day-trippers.

Nomad’s founder Louisa Warman said its analysis showed that more needs to be done to address chronic overcrowding during peak season. “Hopefully our research can help tourists planning to visit some of these destinations this summer choose their dates better, so they might enjoy the best of these beautiful locations in a more peaceful and relaxing fashion,” she added.

The company has compiled a list of the top 30 busiest cruise destinations during the two peak summer months, with the top spot taken by the Italian town of Civitavecchia, which is expecting more than 756,000 arrivals. This isn’t surprising. As the gateway to Rome , it is a marquee port for Mediterranean sailings, with passengers passing through as they make their way in fleets of coaches (or efficient and reasonably-priced trains) to the Italian capital.

Subsequent slots are occupied by destinations which are no strangers to the problems of overtourism, with Barcelona in second place – 660,000 cruise arrivals – followed by Mykonos – nearly 536,000 – and Santorini – more than 530,000.

Other ports which have hit the headlines over this issue include Palma de Mallorca, in eighth place with in excess of 393,000 cruise visitors and Dubrovnik , in 18th place with nearly 200,000 arrivals.

The figures make interesting reading as they show a gulf between the busiest days in the ports and the quietest.

Take Barcelona, where nearly 25,000 cruise passengers are due to descend on Sunday August 4, for example, yet just a few weeks later the number drops to just over 3,000 on Thursday August 22, while seven dates will see none at all.

In Mykonos, the difference is also dramatic, with a high of just over 16,000 on Tuesday August 27, a low of 1,300 on Friday August 9, and one day with no cruise ships due to visit.

For anyone who’s suffered the jam-packed streets of Santorini, it’s worth bearing in mind that according to these statistics, Saturday July 27 and Saturday August 3 are days when no ships are scheduled to call at the island, while Saturday July 13 chalked up the month’s lowest tally with just 298 cruise visitors.

For anyone planning ahead, these figures throw up some interesting pointers. While Barcelona is busiest on Fridays and Sundays, its least crowded days are generally Wednesdays and Thursdays. No cruise ships call at the Catalan city on any Wednesday during August.

In Santorini, weekends are the time to visit to avoid the worst of the cruise crowds, which arrive en masse on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Interestingly, Mallorca’s capital Palma has five days in July and two in August when there are no cruise calls at all, while Dubrovnik has four August dates with zero cruise ships.

Yet such is the weight of day-trippers and those staying in hotels or rentals, the absence of cruise ships or even reduced numbers of cruise passengers, brings only a partial solution to this growing problem.

Vociferous objections against the rising number of cruise ships plying Mediterranean waters and the growing size of such ships, the largest of which can hold more than 6,000 passengers, has already prompted some destinations to bring in rules limiting cruise ships.

Venice is a case in point, having barred vessels over 25,000 tons from the centre, resulting in lines calling at Marghera across the Venetian Lagoon or alternatives such as Ravenna, Trieste or Fusina .

A cap on cruise visits to Dubrovnik, which allows just two ships (carrying no more than 8,000 passengers) to dock each day, has led lines to introduce alternative cities such as Split or Sibenik.

With mounting numbers of travellers, overtourism is a problem that is unlikely to disappear soon. However, cruise companies are working together to stagger calls at some of the worst-affected destinations to mitigate overcrowding problems which, at the end of day, don’t just have a negative impact on the destinations, but on their own guests too.

Home >> Russia >> Russian River Cruise from St Petersburg To Moscow.

Have you ever dreamed of strolling through Moscow’s Red Square or seeing the ballet in St Petersburg – A city where opulent palaces offer a glimpse into one of the world’s most  intriguing royal dynasties .

Russia’s two great cities still invoke the old school romance of travel – a journey into the enigmatic and exotic. However, in a country as immense as it is fascinating, there is so much to see beyond the metropolis of Russia’s great cities.

A Russian River Cruise , St Petersburg to Moscow on Viking Cruises Waterways of the Tsars cruise will take you to Russia’s great cities and beyond.

Take a Russian river cruise from Moscow to St Petersberg to see sights like Moscow's famous Red Square. We enjoyed our Viking River Cruise.

Sailing the rivers and lakes of Russia from St Petersburg to Moscow takes you into Russia’s heartland. It is deep in the country where you find the Golden Ring cities, charming towns and iconic, sometimes forgotten monuments that helped define Russia’s history.

A Russian river cruise opens up possibilities to visit parts of Russia that may otherwise be logistically difficult. It also offers a very efficient and cost-effective way to see the best of this vast country.

Visiting Russia

Unfortunately, Russia is a country too often sidestepped by many travellers. It has been more than two decades since Russia emerged from behind the Iron Curtain and began welcoming tourists with semi-open arms and a cold stony smile.

However, Russia still carries the stigma of being a difficult country to travel to and in. Thanks mostly to a reputation of complicated, bureaucratic visa processes and rumoured corruption.

Russian Visa Requirements

If you are travelling through Russia on a river cruise, unless you are eligible for the new 16 day e-Visa, most foreign nationals must have a tourist visa.  The Russian visa process can take up to a month or two. It is important to check your visa requirement and make sure you get it submitted well in advance of your intended travel date.

The gradual introduction of the new e-visa is making the process simpler but is restricted for visits of only eight days and specific entry points. Based on this, the e-visa is not suitable for a river cruise in Russia.

Applying online for your Tourist Invitation Letter is quick and simple, allowing you to proceed with your application. You can read more about planning your trip to Russia here .

Travel in Russia

As independent travellers, our biggest dilemma with Russia is logistics. Russia covers two continents and nine time zones, and the highlights and must-sees are spread far and wide, with nothing in between.

When you don’t have unlimited time or an unlimited budget, the distances can pose some issues. Transport through Russia can be expensive and less than comfortable, and car hire could be a costly alternative.

Is a River Cruise The Best Way To See Russia?

We would say yes, a river cruise is a fantastic way to see Russia. For most, Russia is a once in a lifetime adventure, so, it boils down to how much of Russia do you want to see.

A river cruise makes sense for most travellers to Russia and most travel budgets. A cruise enables visitors to experience more of Russia than perhaps they would on their own.

Much like some of the unreliable, uncomfortable transport methods available in Russia, some of the Russian cruise lines are shall we say, still a little Soviet.

Viking Cruises, on the other hand, offers a product in Russia to the same high, 5- star standard as their river cruises throughout Europe. A full-service luxury river cruise from the moment you make your booking to the time you disembark.

And much like Viking’s European itineraries, the Viking Russian Cruise itineraries are destination focused with high quality shore excursions and enrichment experiences.

Viking’s All-Inclusive Cruise Packages

The big appeal of cruising for some is the all-inclusive aspect, so they know what to expect. With Viking Cruises, you can expect so much more than just an all-inclusive cruise package of meals and drinks.

In addition to optional excursions, there are also lots of free shore excursions throughout the cruise.

Fly Cruise Packages

You can book your Russian river cruise inclusive of flights from your home port, wherever in the world that may be. An attractive option for those wishing to take the guesswork out of arranging flights, knowing you have access to Vikings Cruises discounted fares and upgrades.

Fly cruise packages include all taxes and airport transfers in Russia. Helpful for those who don’t like to navigate the taxi hustle on arrival in a new country. (Speaking from first-hand experience, Russia certainly has some good taxi scams running from the airport).

Information to assist you with the visa process is also included, the most daunting prospect of visiting Russia for many.

Shore Excursions and Tours in Russia

During the river cruise, a high quality tour itinerary of shore excursions and tours are included to ensure you experience the best things to do in Russia.

There are also some delightful surprises, such as an evening at the ballet in St Petersburg. The tour schedule is designed with the arts and culture in mind, not just the big tourist hot spots.

Additional or Optional Tours can also be purchased at each destination such as our traditional Russian Banya experience in Mandrogy or the vodka tasting on board.

On Board Lectures, Demonstrations and Activities.

In addition to activities during cruising times, such as cooking demonstrations and traditional Russian tea’s, the guides also offer daily lectures on Russian history and politics.

The lectures are one of the highlights of the trip. Engaging and well-researched lectures, delivered from a Russian perspective, provide an entirely different and refreshing perspective on Russian culture and politics.

Russian Cuisine on Board

Viking River Cruises always excel when it comes to onboard dining. Interchangeable a la carte menus are available at all meal times showcasing Russian cuisine and produce.

The less adventurous are well catered for with an excellent “always available” a la carte menu. Portions are sensible to allow for all courses to be tried and savoured. Unlike the glutenous portions or “ all you can eat” buffet’s some cruise ships favour.

Viking River Cruises Fine Dining

Drinks are complimentary with all meals, including a tipple of champagne at breakfast if you are so inclined.

A Silver Drinks Package can be purchased, which gives you unlimited drinks from the bar for the entire cruise as well as a vast selection of wines.

The Convenience and Comfort of River Cruises

There is a lot to be said for having your floating hotel accompany you on your journey through Russia. Unlike some ocean cruises where the focus can be on shipboard life at the expense of the destinations, on this Russian river cruise, the destinations are the focus.

You get the complete package of the best things to see in Russia without having to navigate multiple modes of transport or having to unpack, pack and move accommodation all the time.

And it is not only the tour guides who are tourism professionals. You also have at your disposal a 5-star hotel team — professional food and beverage staff, well versed in the art of fine dining and world-class chefs.

There are also plenty of comfortable public spaces, both indoors and out with panoramic views to relax and take in the vista while you are cruising.

Cruise St Petersburg to Moscow

For us, opting to travel through Russia on a river cruise was primarily motivated by the itinerary. Most people would be happy to visit Moscow or St Petersburg. But why make an effort to visit this intriguing country and miss all the beautiful and exciting things to see outside of the main cities despite the vast geographic distances.

The Cruise Itinerary

The river cruise itinerary is what sold us on this mode of travel. The itinerary enabled us to spend ample time in St Petersburg and Moscow; then with our floating hotel in tow, we took to the river.

It is here where we saw the other Russia. Stunning countryside, small villages, abandoned churches and majestic cathedrals dotted along the river banks. A view of Russia that speaks volumes about the country’s history and culture.

As we slipped down the river, we had the  White Nights  in our favour so could take advantage of the long days and very short nights of summer. Enjoying the sights of the Russian countryside en route to our next destination. Each day a different destination with a cruising schedule set to maximise time spent ashore.

Waterways of the Tsars Schedule

Seven different destinations are visited in the 13 days onboard. This includes three full days in both Moscow and St Petersburg. We would not have achieved this on our own in the two weeks we had.

Commencing either in St Petersburg or Moscow, the itinerary allows for three days in each city. You can read about the cruise itinerary and shore excursions in St Petersburg and Moscow here.

Mandrogy Russia

Mandrogy, built in 1996 as an open-air museum, is a replica of   Verkhine Mandrogi , a Russian village destroyed during WWII. The enterprise was intended to give travellers cruising between St Petersburg and Kizhi a feel for traditional Russian life.

Unfortunately, we found Mandrogy to be very much that – a fabricated tourist attraction including costumed craftsmen and women with innumerable craft stalls and workshops selling the same trinkets.

Mandrogy Russia

Paint your Own Russian Matryoshka Doll

The central premise for this village appears to be shopping and, of course, the famed Russian Matryoshka Dolls. You can partake in a workshop to learn how to paint your own nesting dolls or, watch any number of the local artists paint dolls in their style. These, of course, are available for purchase.

While Mandrogy was not our cup of tea, there was a silver lining to this little settlement – the traditional Russian Banya.

Mandrogy Russia

Experience a Russian Banya

The banya is one of those quintessentially Russian experiences.  One of the oldest Russian traditions dating back centuries. A tradition that has not lost its appeal and is still popular today.

Essentially the banya is a steam room or sauna where water is poured over hot rocks to create steam with temperatures often exceeding 93ºC. However, the banya comes with a little more ceremony than your average steam room or sauna.

Specific brooms are used in the banya called veniks . These are usually bunches of birch or oak branches which are dipped into cold water in the sweltering steam room. They are then smacked briskly over the body.

Typically,  there will be a person responsible for this task – a banschik.  As the banya is considered a very social activity, a  banschik  is often not required as friends will usually smack each other with the veniks.

branches tied together and hanging on a rail waiting to be used to whip the hell out of you in a russian banya. viking river cruises will stop here and allow you to be beaten to a sweating pulp by local russian folk

Thankfully our experience included a banschik as we would not have known the sequence of events nor the protocols for polite smacking! So, how does one banya?

  • Enter the banya and wait for temperatures to become almost unbearably hot.
  • Relax while the banschick  completes a ceremonial beating of everyone’s bodies with the veniks.  It includes intense rustling of the branches either side of your head, which is repeated several times.
  • Leave the banya and allow the  banschick  to pour freezing cold water over you.
  • Adjourn to the adjacent room for tea and jam.
  • Repeat steps 1 & 2.
  • Leave the banya house and run to the river to plunge into the icy waters.
  • Repeat step 6.

Traditional Russian Banya Mandrogy with man serving tea to two viking guests after being in the banya. this really is a unique thing to do in russia

You get the gist! Used as a method of bathing in Russia for centuries, the banya is said to have a myriad of health benefits. There are many communal or public banyas in the cities and towns, and some people still have private banyas in their homes.

The banya is one Russian experience we highly recommend, providing you have the constitution to withstand the intensity of it.

Near the centre of the Lake Onega, the second largest lake in Europe, you will find the wild and isolated island of Kizhi. Kizhi is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed open-air museum.

At only 6 km long and 1 km wide, this tiny island is one of Russia’s most visited. The settlements buildings date back to the 15th century, some of which were moved from various Karelian villages during Soviet times to help preserve them.

However, the islands most notable and recognisable attractions are the famous wooden onion-domed buildings- the twenty-two domed Transfiguration Church and the nine domed Intercession Church.

Locals will tell you; both churches were constructed without the use of a single nail. The unknown builder is also said to have destroyed his axe on completion of the Transfiguration Church. He is quoted as saying: “ There was not and will not be another to match it”.

Within the smaller Church of the intercession, you may hear the local clergy, a beautiful and moving baritone choir intone the ancient liturgy. The islands ancient settlement gives insight into the harsh realities of life in the Russian heartland. Places where entire settlements were isolated for much of the year throughout long winters. You can read more about  visiting Kizhi Island here .

Along the Volga – Baltic waterway you will find the urban settlement of Kuzino approx. 600km north of Moscow.

In addition to some fascinating churches, some abandoned or in various states of repair that are worth exploring, the highlight of this region is the Kirillo – Belozersky Monastery. More like a fortress than a monastery, the magnificent complex sits on Severskoye Lake.

the Kirillo - Belozersky Monastery set against the river with 5 steeples around the outer perimeter.

Severskoye Lake is deemed so pure no motorboats are allowed on it. According to urban myth, the waters were blessed, giving them qualities similar to those of the mythical fountain of youth.

From humble beginnings in 1397 when two monks founded the monastery in nothing more than a cave dug by two men. By 1494, now a stone structure, it was the largest church in medieval Russia.

Defended by thick walls and towers it was a refuge for not just monks and peasants, but also a place of pilgrimage for Tsars and so benefited from generous donations and tax breaks. Ivan the Terrible was said to be a regular visitor and big tipper. The financially favourable guest list enabled the monastery to grow in size and importance.

Kuzino Russia

By 1764, Catherine the Great had stripped the monastery of its land and converted the complex into a prison. In 1924 the Bolshevik government shut the complex down and executed or arrested the monks. Interestingly, unlike most monasteries, it was not converted into a concentration camp but rather a museum.

Yaroslavl, the largest city on the Volga, lies just 250 km’s north of Moscow which makes this Golden Ring city a popular weekend getaway.

Perhaps this quaint city of six hundred thousand should be called the city of churches because here you will find an impressive kaleidoscope of onion domes. At the convergence of the mighty Volga and Kotorosl rivers is the historic part of the city, a listed UNESCO World Heritage site.

white church with gold topped green parapets in Yaroslavl Russia. these are the amazing things you will see on a viking river cruise st petersburg to moscow

The city dates back to Prince Yaroslav or Yaroslav the Wise  when he came ashore in around 998, slew the sacred bear worshipped by the local pagan tribes and converted them to Christianity. Hence, the bear on the city’s coat of arms.

Yaroslavl Russia

While these events may have attributed to the city’s religious fervour – the churches that now adorn the skyline were the work of 17th and 19th century merchants on a quest to outdo each other in a bid to beautify the city.  To this day it remains a magnificent city, one that appears to have remained unscathed by the soviet facelift given to much of Russia.

4 golden domes atop a church in Yaroslavl Russia

Uglich, another of the Golden Ring Cities. A picturesque riverside city filled with inviting parks and brightly coloured church domes. The history of Uglich is steeped in a murder mystery that changed the history of Russia.

Ivan the Terrible was never quite right following the death of his wife Anastasia and so instituted a reign of terror that earned him his name. Although respected for his military victories and management of Russian interests, he was also feared for some terrible deeds.

Uglich Russia

One such deed was accidentally killing his son and heir with a blow to the head. Due to this faux par on Ivan’s behalf, his crippled son Feodor, who by all reports was not well in mind or body, ascended to power. However, the country was being run by Feodor’s brother in law, Boris Godunov.

Uglich Russia

Quietly in the wings was Dimitry, Ivan’s younger son who could have succeeded the throne in light of Feodor’s lack of interest in political issues. In 1591, at the age of ten, Dimitry was found dead thanks to a stab wound. It was decided Dimitry slit his own throat with a sword during an epileptic fit.

At the risk of stating the obvious – it was widely assumed the boy was murdered. However, those who dared to accuse Boris Gudunov only did so once. The mystery remains, and so does this beautiful city close to Moscow.

LOVIN TRAVELS: Why Moscow Needs To Be On Your Bucket List

Anika Eliz Baby

My fascination with Russia began when I was 13 years old, among the many tea shops in Karama. Not many people know why the tea in this area tastes so good—the secret lies in a large metal contraption known as the samovar.

The samovar is a Russian invention, a steel boiler that is constantly heating water or tea- a necessity for the colder climates. Many moons ago, Russian traders carried this samovar to Kerala, India during their trade journey. The Malayalis carried it to the shores of (old) Dubai…brewing and brewing until it reached my lips.

Delicious tea, Leo Tolstoy, a fascination for the history of Communism, and Tchaikovsky. I was already in love. So when the Moscow City Tourism Committee invited 3 journalists from the UAE to come visit…I jumped!

DAY 1: Landing in Moscow and visiting the iconic Red Square

Zdravstvuyte! (a formal hello in Russian) Privet if you are my friend.

I settled into my room at the Baltschug Kempinski . This hotel is right on the banks of the Moscow River , and the view of the Kremlin from your window is one you just cannot get used to! After marvelling at my heated bathroom floors, I went ahead for a walk in the “heart of the capital”

The Red Square and the architectural wonders that adorn it are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. (One glance and you’ll understand why!) It is a historical place, a must-see for foreigners. Muscovites love celebrating the New Year here. With paving stones, beautiful lights and colours…it’s straight out of a storybook!

*Travel tip: Keep your plans for Day 1 light, as you may need to spend some time at the airport for special protocols, if any

Day 2: Diamonds at the Kremlin, Panorama views, and a dinner cruise along the Moscow River

The oldest part of Moscow! The Moscow Kremlin is an irregular triangle with an area of 27.5 hectares. Its southern wall faces the Moskva River, the north-western wall faces the Alexander Garden, and the eastern wall faces Red Square.

I passed by the Red Square and walked into the beautiful spread of Alexander Gardens. Paid my respects at the War Memorial and watched the guard change near the eternal flame. Then I marched myself into the grand gates of the Kremlin, ready to see historical secrets!

The Armory is the treasury of the Moscow Kremlin

it is a royal treasury filled with precious jewellery, magnificent weapons and regalia of Russian monarchs. These masterpieces were created in XII-XX centuries by Russian, European and Oriental masters. It is here that one of the symbols of Tsarist Russia, the famous Monomakh’s cap, is kept.

The Diamond Fund

Opened in 1967, The Diamond Fund consists of masterpieces of jewellery art of the XVIII-XX centuries, rare precious stones, order insignia, and nuggets of noble metals of great historical, artistic, scientific and material value.  The collection is undoubtedly one of the most significant and largest collections in the world and is the most famous part of the State Fund’s treasury. I also strayed away from my itinerary and visited the Moscow Metro

Each station in this grand underground system is dedicated to it’s own theme. Soviet era, Sportivnaya, Mayakovskaya, and more.

I entered a few churches and after understanding a little bit of grand Russian history and Pyotr the Great and Ivan the Terrible, I made my way to the future 4km away from the Kremlin…Moscow City.

“Moscow City” is an ultramodern architectural complex of skyscrapers made of glass and concrete.

This is a ‘city of the future’ in the middle of the capital, located on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment in the bend of the Moskva River. The architecture of the buildings combines art nouveau, high-tech and neo-constructivism. Here, I also visited the PANORAMA360 observation deck – the highest observation deck in Moscow and Europe, located on the 89th floor of one of the skyscrapers.

I ended my day on a scenic cruise on the Radisson Yacht. This 2.5-hour cruise will take you around the city and you can marvel at the old factories and grand statues.

Day 3: A royal estate, caviar tasting, and the ever-elegant Bolshoi theatre

Nature in Moscow is something else! (Think Studio Ghibli) The beautiful summer day was perfect for me to head to

Arkhangelskoye, one of the most picturesque residences of the Moscow region.

This sprawling estate has a history of being loved by famous princely families of pre-revolutionary Russia…and you can truly see the royal touch! Make sure you wear a bow on your hair and keep your camera ready for this beautiful spot often called ‘Versailles near Moscow’

After that relaxing morning smelling beautiful flowers near Moscow Lake, I rushed back to my hotel and put on my finest evening wear- because the night was about to be so fancy!

I took a quick walk past the Red Square to Beluga – home to some of the finest Russian delicacies and 15 kinds of caviar! Combining it with fresh bread and butter and you are in for a treat. Once I was well-fed, it was time to watch my first-ever ballet performance!

In the very centre of Moscow on a beautiful square is the main temple of Russian culture – the Bolshoi Theatre

The pride of all Russia, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the most significant opera and ballet theatres in the world. One can only enjoy its immortal work with bated breath and admire the magnificent building, which also serves an outstanding example of Russian architecture. I watched the Benois de la Danse Stars and was completely mesmerized by the skill, dedication, and talent it takes for ballet. Massive respect!

Day 4: A futuristic park, high tea, and a much-needed massage

My morning started bright and early. I was very excited to go check out the newest symbol of Moscow, located very close to the Red Square.

Built between 2014-2017, Zaryadye is a cultural and educational centre

This park has unusual architecture, high-tech attractions, a modern scientific and educational centre for children, a museum and exhibition space and a unique botanical collection from all over Russia.

Then I got the opportunity to visit the Ritz Carlton- perhaps the most beautiful hotel in the centre of Moscow. I went to the O2 lounge on top for a very fancy (and delicious!) high tea. I also took time to visit a Soviet era supermarket. It was truly a surreal experience. The staff still dress like the old days, certain products still have the soviet era packaging, and the recipe for certain cakes in these bakeries (you’ll know it when you see it) has not changed since the Soviet era!

Day 5: VDNKH, UAE Culture Day, a circus and heading home

My last day was utilised until the last minute!

Opened on August 1, 1939, VDNKh is a unique space for museum and exhibition projects, international business exhibitions and congresses, festivals and holidays. It is the largest exposition, museum and recreational complex in the world. It is so large that you could spend a whole day just wandering around. I explored three main pavilions.

The International Exhibition-Forum “Russia”

is dedicated to the country’s traditions, history and achievements. Although this was limited time only, it turned VDNKh into a platform where people could get acquainted with advanced Russian achievements and innovations, national traditions of different parts of the country, and products of domestic farmers and enterprises in the 21st century.

Pavilion 43   The Center of National Equestrian Traditions and a sports equestrian club .

This pavilion familiarizes visitors with the history and traditions of horse breeding in Russia, and also teaches horseback riding to those who wish to ride!

The “Cosmos” Space Pavilion

Russia’s space advancements are monumental, just like this building which is a tribute! Here, you can get inspired by models and original space equipment, the rarest documents, and multimedia exhibits and interactive zones.

Then I proceeded to the Red Square for a sight I never thought I’d witness. It was phenomenal to hear the UAE National Anthem playing out loud in Moscow!

On Friday, July 28, the Days of UAE Culture were launched on the Red Square

This culturally rich programme introduced Moscovites and Emiratis in Moscow to the culture and tradition of the UAE. There were live stalls for luqaimat, henna, gahwa, and so much more. It was truly amusing to see how the warm Emirati hospitality is embraced by other countries.

The last stop before the airport was catching the Nikulin circus

Located on Tsvetnoy Boulevard , this is one of the oldest circuses in Russia and the most famous circus in Moscow.

I watched The “Matryoshka”- a brand new show of the Nikulin Circus, featuring clowns, gymnasts, acrobats, as well as trained horses, bears and other animals. The circus performers present their best sets all while playing with the themes of traditional crafts. (Please note: Live animals are a part of this circus.)

And with that, we packed up and left for the airport… but I know I will be coming back for sure.

Spasibo Bolshoe (thank you very much) for reading, hope to see you in Moscow soon!
