Comedian Louis C.K. , whose career derailed after he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women in 2017, is making a return to stand-up comedy in a nationwide tour beginning next week, he announced on his website.

Revealed on Wednesday, C.K. has shows in 30 cities, including New York, Chicago, Detroit, San Diego, Philadelphia, Boston and more. His first stand-up show is set for the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden on August 13, with a follow-up show the next night. The tour ends at the Orpheum Theater in Boston on December 11.

In 2017, C.K. was accused by multiple women of masturbating in front of them during the onset of the #MeToo era. In a report by the New York Times, comedians Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov alleged that C.K. invited them to his hotel room during the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colo., in 2002 and stripped naked and began to masturbate. Comedian Rebecca Corry also told the Times that while she was working with C.K. on a TV pilot in 2005, he allegedly asked her if he could go to her dressing room and masturbate while she watched.

Last year, C.K. released a comedy special on his website where he made light of his sexual misconduct allegations .

Popular on Variety

“How was your last couple of years? How was 2018 and 2019 for you guys? Anybody else get in global amounts of trouble?” he asks the crowd in the special. He continued, “I learned a lot. I learned how to eat alone in a restaurant with people giving me the finger from across the room.”

In addition to his U.S. tour dates, C.K. also has international shows set for Ukraine, Germany, Denmark and Romania in 2022.

Louis CK Announces 24-City Comeback Comedy Tour Starting This Month

Multiple women accused the comedian of sexual misconduct in 2017

louis ck

Disgraced comedian Louis C.K. will be returning to the stage this month as part of a 24-city comeback tour around the country.

The tour kicks off Aug. 13 and 14 with two nights at New York City’s Madison Square Garden and concludes with two nights in Boston in mid-December. Some dates on this current tour are rescheduled from a 2020 tour that C.K. had planned but was forced to cancel due to the coronavirus pandemic.

C.K. plans to also take the tour overseas; he is scheduled for appearances in the Ukraine, Denmark, Germany and Romania in 2022.

According to C.K.’s website and an email promoting the tour first reported by the New York Post , the comic said he will try to avoid spreading the coronavirus at his gigs and plans to “comply with the local governments of each city in terms of health standards and practices. Like everyone else, we will just do our best under the circumstances.”

Harvey Weinstein Los Angeles Court Appearance

The comedian, whose real name is Louis Székely, went on hiatus after multiple women came forward with sexual harassment allegations against him in November 2017. He was accused of masturbating — or asking to do so — in front of women who were seeking to work with or learn from him. Comedian Rebecca Corry was one of the five women C.K. was accused of trying to expose himself to, and she told The New York Times that C.K. “told me he had issues.”

After initially staying mum on the allegations, C.K. did admit to them. “These stories are true,” C.K. stated at the time . “At the time, I said to myself that what I did was OK because I never showed a woman my d— without asking first, which is also true.”

C.K. continued in his statement, “What I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at your d— isn’t a question. It’s a predicament for them. The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly.”

Following his admittance of the sexual misconduct, C.K. suffered a massive career fallout — he was dropped by his management team at 3 Arts Entertainment and his APA agency and publicist Lewis Kay also cut ties. C.K.’s film he was working on at the time called “I Love You, Daddy” for distributor The Orchard was shelved and streamers FX, Netflix, HBO and TBS all distanced themselves from the former star.

C.K. himself said he lost $35 million in an hour after the allegations were made public.

The comedian whose show “Louie” won three primetime Emmy Awards did try to get back onstage prior to this tour, but his standup sets were not exactly well-received. In particular, C.K. was torn up online after telling a joke at a December 2018 gig in Long Island about school shooting victims — which, understandably, was deemed by most to be in poor taste. “You’re not interesting because you went to a high school where kids got shot,” C.K. said during the gig.

Louis C.K. , the controversial comic whose career all but vanished in 2017-18 amid reports of sexual misconduct , has announced a major U.S. comedy tour that will launch next week with a two-night stand at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theatre in New York City.

The stand-up tour, with more than 50 shows in 30 cities, begins Friday, Aug. 13, at the Hulu and conclude on Dec. 11 in Boston. Stops along the way include Syracuse, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Spokane, San Diego, Long Beach, Stockton, Philadelphia, Oklahoma City, Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago, among others. A European tour will follow, he said.

C.K. announced the tour in an email to his fans and followers today and posted the tour dates on his website.

“Hello Person that you are being right now,” he began the email, obtained by Deadline. “I am writing to you today because I am going to be touring around the United States of America, performing stand-up comedy in theaters in several different cities.”

Acknowledging that Covid “ is still a factor around the country and world,” C.K. notes, “We will see how this goes. Our intention is to do every show we can do. We will comply with the local governments of each city in terms of health standards and practices. Like everyone else, we will just do our best under the circumstances.”

The six-time Emmy-winning actor, writer and producer concludes: “I’m really looking forward to seeing your faces as I tell some rather impolite jokes and stories.”

The career of the comic and creator of FX’s Louie imploded in 2017 after The New York Times reported that five women said C.K. masturbated either in front of them or while he was on the phone with them. The comic acknowledged the behavior and largely withdrew from public appearances until making small, sometimes unannounced stand-up gigs from New York’s Greenwich Village to Dayton, OH, some of which drew protesters . A 2020 tour was planned but canceled due to Covid.

Disgraced Comedian Louis C.K. Is Going on a Comeback Tour

louie c k tour

By Chris Murphy

CENTURY CITY CA SEPTEMBER 16 Louis C.K. attends FX and Vanity Fair Emmy Celebration at Craft on September 16 2017 in...

Brace yourself, because Louis C.K. may be coming to a city near you. The disgraced comedian announced this week that he’ll be embarking upon a 24-city comeback tour, which kicks off in New York at Madison Square Garden on August 13th and August 14th, and concludes at the Orpheum Theater in Boston on December 11th.

C.K.’s career was derailed in 2017 at the onset of the #MeToo movement, after multiple women accused the veteran comic of sexual misconduct, alleging that he had masturbated—or had asked to do so—in front of them. Several of the accusers were aspiring comedians themselves. C.K. ultimately admitted to the misconduct, saying, “These stories are true. At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman my dick without asking first, which is also true.”

Following these revelations, C.K. was dropped by his management team at 3 Arts Entertainment, his APA agency, and publicist Lewis Kay . His Emmy-winning FX series, Louie , was also cancelled, as networks and streamers like FX, HBO, Netflix, distanced themselves from the comedian.

C.K. briefly retreated from public life before returning to standup in 2018, drawing intense criticism for jokes that targeted the victims of mass school shootings. “You’re not interesting because you went to a high school where kids got shot,” C.K. said during a gig in Long Island . More recently, C.K.—who claims he lost $35 million in an hour due to the allegations—has used his performances to downplay his own situation. In his 2020 comedy special “Sincerely, Louis C.K.,” C.K. joked about his misconduct: “How was your last couple of years? How was 2018 and 2019 for you guys? Anybody else get in global amounts of trouble?” he asks his audience. “I learned a lot. I learned how to eat alone in a restaurant with people giving me the finger from across the room.”

Along with New York and Boston, C.K.’s new tour will travel to Chicago, Detroit, San Diego, Philadelphia, and others. He also plans to take his show overseas, with scheduled stops in Ukraine, Germany, Denmark, and Romania in 2022.

Louis C.K. to Embark on Nationwide Comedy Tour Nearly 4 Years After Sexual Misconduct Scandal

The five-month tour begins Aug. 13 in New York

Almost four years after his sexual misconduct scandal , Louis C.K. is preparing for a nationwide comedy tour.

The controversial stand-up comedian announced in an email Wednesday that he will be embarking on a cross-country, multi-city tour, beginning Aug. 13 in New York and concluding in December in Boston.

"Hello Person that you are being right now," he wrote in the email, per Deadline . "I am writing to you today because I am going to be touring around the United States of America, performing stand-up comedy in theaters in several different cities."

C.K., 53, acknowledged that COVID "is still a factor around the country and world," adding that "we will see how this goes."

"Our intention is to do every show we can do. We will comply with the local governments of each city in terms of health standards and practices. Like everyone else, we will just do our best under the circumstances," he continued. "I'm really looking forward to seeing your faces as I tell some rather impolite jokes and stories."

The full list of dates for the five-month tour are posted on his website.

In November 2017, the New York Times published a report in which five women detailed their experiences with C.K., including that he masturbated in front of them.

Comedians Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov said that while with C.K. in his hotel room after their show at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in 2002, he "proceeded to take all of his clothes off, and get completely naked, and started masturbating."

Comedian Rebecca Corry said C.K. "asked if we could go to my dressing room so he could masturbate in front of me" while filming a TV pilot in 2005, and writer Abby Schachner said she heard him masturbating through the phone during a 2003 call. A fifth, anonymous woman said that while working on The Chris Rock Show in the late 1990s, C.K. masturbated while she sat with him in his office, and a co-worker corroborated her story to the Times .

C.K. responded with a lengthy statement in which he admitted that "these stories are true."

He added, "The hardest regret to live with is what you've done to hurt someone else. And I can hardly wrap my head around the scope of hurt I brought on them … I have spent my long and lucky career talking and saying anything I want. I will now step back and take a long time to listen."

Louis CK is widely recognized as one of the best comedians on tour today and he has earned every bit of that reputation. I have seen Louie several times, most recently in Georgia in 2012 at The Classic Center, and every show has been hilarious.

Louie is not one of those comedians that engages with the audience by insulting people close to the stage (unless they’re heckling him) or making silly noises, doing impressions, etc. Louie tells relatable, funny stories from his own life, but then interjects them with twisted, profane, and sexually explicit thoughts that most people have but are afraid to say.

Every time that I have seen him we easily got what we paid for. Louie performed for at least an hour, often more, and seemed to have so much material that he could have gone on for hours more.

At the show in Georgia we sat next to an older couple who really had no idea who he was and were told to attend the show by their kids. I could tell they were uncomfortable at the start of the show because of some of the sexually explicit thoughts Louie was sharing and the way he was using profanity. But by the time he started sharing stories and jokes about his children, the couple was laughing hysterically. I even heard the older gentleman make a comment, “That’s just like our daughter.” While you may not always agree with him or like what he says, Louie will always win you over and make you laugh.

Louis C.K., Back on Tour, Looks to Accelerate His Comeback

After admitting to #MeToo accusations, the comedian will kick off a three-month tour on Saturday in Virginia. Those going might want to read the fine print.

louie c k tour

By Maya Salam

Louis C.K. is back on the road. Starting Saturday night in Richmond, Va., the onetime comedy king, who’s been in comeback mode for more than a year, is taking further steps to reestablish his career after admitting to sexual misconduct in 2017.

On Sunday, he sent a message to fans and others on his email list , letting them know about his plans to tour and to bring back his website . (The first sentence in the missive asks those who don’t want to be on the list anymore to “scroll now all the way to the bottom of this email and click the unsubscribe option down there.”)

On Friday, his website’s home page read: “Hey. Hello. I am on the road doing professional stand-up comedy. Which consists of sharing jokes, stories, observations, lies, non-lies, and being generally ridiculous for the benefit of a laughing audience.”

He directs visitors to his list of tour dates currently through January — which include performances in North Carolina, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan, as well as in Israel, Italy and Slovakia. “Click on the links to buy tickets so you can be there,” he says. “Or don’t.”

But those looking for a casual night of comedy might want to read the fine print before attending. The tickets come with a host of stipulations: Not only will the performances be phone-free experiences ( Yondr cases will be provided and required, an increasingly common practice in comedy and theater), but attendees will not be allowed to take notes, even on paper.

“Recording of any kind, including note taking,” is not permitted, the rules say. And no part of Louis C.K.’s “materials” — a.k.a. his jokes and sketches — are allowed to be “copied, translated, transmitted, displayed, distributed or reproduced verbatim,” in any form. Those who violate these rules are subject to legal repercussions, it reads.

It’s not the first time Louis C.K. has tried to eliminate leaks with the threat of legal penalties. Similar language was used in May for his four-night surprise residency at the Acme Comedy Company in Minneapolis.

It was just weeks after the October 2017 takedown of Harvey Weinstein, triggering the #MeToo movement, that Louis C.K. was accused by several women in the comedy world of sexual misconduct, including instances in which he masturbated in front of them. Shortly after, he admitted in a statement , “These stories are true.”

The revelations led to the end of his production deal with FX Networks and Productions and the canceled release of a film he directed and starred in. For months after, the comedian kept a low profile. But in August 2018, he made an unannounced appearance at the Comedy Cellar in Manhattan, performing for apparently the first time since he admitted his wrongdoing.

He did a 15-minute set to a sold-out crowd of about 115, who greeted him with an ovation. For the next couple of months, he performed sporadically at the club, and by that October, he was no longer simply popping in, but making scheduled appearances — marking a new phase of his comeback attempt. “Hell is not that bad,” he told the crowd. “I’ve been there.”

Louis C.K. will perform standup at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 13 and 14.

Despite fierce backlash following his infamous 2017 sexual harassment scandal , it appears that Louis C.K. hasn’t been canceled yet.

The disgraced comic announced in a Wednesday email that he will embark on a nationwide comedy tour, starting with gigs in New York City next week.

The 53-year-old C.K. — whose real name is Louis Székely — wrote in the announcement: “Hello Person that you are being right now, I am writing to you today because I am going to be touring around the United States of America, performing stand-up comedy in theaters in several different cities.”

Per the email, the nationwide tour will kick off at New York City’s Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 13 and 14.

During the course of the proposed five-month tour, the “Louie” star will perform in 24 cities, including Albany, San Diego, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Portland, Chicago and Boston. C.K. will also do a series of stand-up shows in Europe next year, according to his website.

In order to prevent the spread of COVID during the gigs, the “Horace and Pete” creator promises to “comply with the local governments of each city in terms of health standards and practices. Like everyone else, we will just do our best under the circumstances,” the humorist wrote.

C.K. signed off the email by writing, “I’m really looking forward to seeing your faces as I tell some rather impolite jokes and stories.”

The tour announcement comes several years after the comic’s shocking sexual misconduct scandal, in which he confirmed allegations that he’d masturbated in front of several women without their consent.

Louis C.K. performs onstage at Comedy Central Night Of Too Many Stars at Beacon Theatre on February 28, 2015 in New York City.

“These stories are true,” C.K. said in a statement at the time. “At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman my d–k without asking first, which is also true.”

He continued, “But what I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at your d–k isn’t a question. It’s a predicament for them. The power I had over these women is that they admired me. And I wielded that power irresponsibly.”

The scandal sparked a fierce backlash, which resulted in several of the funnyman’s major projects being pulled from production, and prompted many comedians to cut ties with the comedy icon.

Following the incident, the Emmy-winner attempted to make a comeback by popping up at various comedy clubs around town. However, C.K. found himself in hot water yet again after a tone-deaf 2018 set in Long Island, in which he mocked survivors of the February 2018 Parkland, Florida, school shooting.

In 2017, C.K. admitted to masturbating in front of, or on the phone with, several women without their consent.

I Saw Louis C.K. Perform an Arena Gig on the Fifth Anniversary of #MeToo

I learned some things..

When his boss asked about his plans for after work tonight, the guy I invited to come to see Louis C.K. with me panicked and gave a vague answer about “going for drinks.” Even as a journalist’s plus-one, it’s not a great look to be at a comeback gig for one of the most high-profile men to fall from grace as a result of allegations of sexual misconduct.

Not that we were likely to run into anybody. The OVO Arena Wembley is some way out of the city center in a quite vibeless corner of North West London: new build flats, chain restaurants, and the enormous Wembley football stadium. This is where C.K. has decided to do one of two shows in London, his first big gigs in the city since multiple women came forward a month after the dawn of the #MeToo movement, detailing their experiences being coerced into situations where the comedian would masturbate in front of them .

So who’s going to a Louis C.K. gig in 2022? Not all that many people, is the answer, or certainly nothing like the numbers he could command in his heyday. This is a man who sold out Madison Square Garden eight times. The OVO Arena was not full, even though the upper levels of raked seating had been curtained off. C.K did sell out a 4,000-capacity venue elsewhere in the city the night before, though, where he apparently announced himself from a mic backstage as “the disgraced, the disgusting Louis C.K.” So there is at least some appetite for his comeback. Tonight, there was no such introduction, and he doesn’t need one. I would be flabbergasted if there was anyone in the room who was not aware of how Louis CK’s reputation has tanked over the past five years. And the crowd were a very mixed bunch. I expected edgelords, overtly right-leaning people. There were some of those types, sure, but otherwise there was nothing to unite the people in the arena, really. Just a bunch of people at a comedy show.

We were told we weren’t allowed to use phones, not only for photographs but for any reason, including text messages. This has become de rigueur for the post-cancellation comedy circuit, and when C.K. has been playing smaller gigs in the run up to these big shows, the policy has been the same, a “fuck you” to the online outrage machine that would pore over clips of his off-color jokes with new intensity now he’s been exposed as a wrong’un.

As he came out, one kind of unassuming looking guy—it’s always those guys—yelled “we love you, pervert!” C.K. seemed surprisingly ill-equipped to respond to this, smiling a little and saying “whoa, whoa” in a “calm down” kind of way.

This is not the first time people have seen C.K. since the 2017 revelations, by any means. In 2020 he self-released a stand-up special called Sincerely , in which he showed some remorse, but not a lot, for what he did. This was followed last December by another special, Sorry , in which he did not mention the scandal at all except by standing in front of giant letters reading “SORRY” for the duration of the set.

If Sincerely was him grinning as he held up his hands, this tour is him dusting them off and getting back to business as usual: edgy jokes about everything and everybody, from abortions to Japanese people to fart porn to Auschwitz to having sex with children. Which is, I suppose, what most of the #MeToo-accused will eventually be able to do, no matter how many times they’re described as “canceled”: get back on the horse. He did not refer once to the allegations against him, but the specter of his misconduct haunts the set, the unspoken context to jokes about his dating life and his sexual preferences.

Which isn’t to say the show is not funny. Some of the show feels like it’s too easy, sure, a little too jaded, too wed to the shock tactic over the well-constructed joke. But of course some of the show is really funny: This man is an extremely successful and once very widely beloved comedian. That is the entire problem with people like Louis CK and the crux of the power they’re able to abuse. He’s a legend in his field. That’s why he was able for years to do the things that he did with impunity.

After the show, I asked some of the other audience members what they made of it. Most people acknowledged in a vague way that he shouldn’t have jerked off in front of women he held sway over but said they enjoyed the show. I asked a woman in her early 30s in the foyer, and it feels too on the nose, but we were immediately interrupted by two of her male friends who wanted to argue between themselves about whether the problem with Louis CK is that he’s “cancelled” for the jerking-off incidents or that he makes “offensive” jokes.

“Is there ever a way back, for someone like Louis, who held substantial power in his industry, did something wrong, and held his hands up?” one of them said, munching on the dregs of his popcorn. “It’s had an impact on his career and, well, rightly so, but … ” he paused. “I dunno. I feel conflicted about the whole thing. I don’t know how to feel about it. Like, I love Louis C.K. He did some bad shit. How do we define whether he’s paid his dues or not?”

Two guys in their mid-20s from Israel who gave me the pseudonyms Roger and Abraham, told me that this was their third Louis C.K. show. “At first we felt like, ‘Whoa, he got so old. He looks like a grandpa.’ But he is the greatest of all time, in my opinion, and he just killed it.” I asked them whether the revelations about his abusive behavior affected their enjoyment of the show. “Not really,” Roger said, “I separate the artist and his personal life.”

But it’s a pretty difficult thing to do, to separate the art from the artist in confessional, observational standup comedy. Louis C.K. is the protagonist of Louis C.K.’s standup shows. Watching old gigs in which he used to mime masturbating as part of his act (not to mention the extended masturbation material on his show ) necessarily has a different flavor now that we know what he got up to offstage.

Five years on from #MeToo’s inception, the rooms he plays might be smaller, but Louis C.K. hasn’t shuffled off into the shadows. If people want you back after “cancellation,” that road is far from blocked. At the end of the show, he received a standing ovation, and then another after his encore.

But not everybody was impressed. During the first ovation, I turned to the woman sitting behind me, who was making disgruntled noises to her friend. I asked her why. “I came because my brother said this guy was funny,” she said. “I dunno. I just think it’s not hard to be funny without being really offensive.”
