REVIEW: Everything you need to know before visiting Woburn Safari

AD|Press trip

Thinking about buying tickets for Woburn Safari ? I’m going to give you all the info you’ll need in this post.

woburn safari in the rain

📍 Crawley Rd, Woburn, Ridgmont, Bedford MK43 0TU

Parking is FREE! The nearest station is Ridgmont.

£27.50 for 16+

£20.00 for 3-15

Under 3s are FREE

Unfortunately you’re still unable to use Tesco Clubcard vouchers for discounted tickets and I’m not sure when or if you’ll ever be able to use them again.

I’ve had a look on Kidspass and the tickets on there seem to have sold out.

You can get discounted tickets on the Little Bird website but they’re limited so be quick!

You have two options when it’s comes to Woburn Safari. You can do the drive-through Safari or the walk through Safari. They’re both the same price!

We opted for the drive-through experience and it was so good! We saw Elephants, Lions, Bears, Tigers, Giraffes and more! You can repeat the circuits as many times as you like which is good as you might be able to see certain animals you may have missed the first time.

One annoying thing was people being selfish and not moving their cars along quickly enough! I would suggest going as soon as it opens which is 9:30 am. Hopefully, this will allow you to not be stuck in Safari traffic.

Please be aware that this is quite different to West Midlands Safari as you are unable to feed the animals.

At the end of the drive-through Safari you can park your car and see the rest of the animals on foot. Here you’ll be able to see Sea Lions, Meerkats, Wallabies, Penguins and more! The Elephant Medow is currently closed and I’m not sure when it will reopen.

Kids are going to love the Mammoth Play Ark! It’s a huge soft play area with very cool slides!

Giraffe trail high ropes is for kids 5-12. It’s £6.99 per child and card payment only.

The dragon and swan boats are fun for the whole family! They’re super easy to find! You can’t miss it! This activity is also included in the entry price. The Swan and Dragon Boats are open from 10:30am – 5.30pm every day.

Outdoor play areas are there for the kids to enjoy! You have the inflatables for toddlers, the jungle jamboree playground and the bobcat run!

There are a number of places where you can grab some food! Pizzas, sandwiches , kids snack boxes, the usual kind of food you get at places like this! Toilets and baby changing facilities are also available.

It was a really good day out. I would highly recommend doing the drive-through Safari if you can! Seeing the animals up close from the comfort of your car is awesome!

woburn safari in the rain

Fabulous family fun (in the rain!)

Visited on the wettest day in August (having pre-arranged the date and bought the tickets!). Easy to find from the M1 and easy entrance. Really well sign-posted throughout the park too. We were 2 cars with 4 adults and 3 kids (6, 9, 15) and everyone had a really great day out. Even in the rain there was enough to do to justify the price (expensive when there are 7 of you but a whole days entertainment). We did the road safari twice (beginning and end) and saw/noticed different things both times. The kids LOVED that the monkeys climbed all over us on our second round! The cafe served lovely hot food and was clean (if maybe a little tired). Most animals could be seen in the rain, although not all looked thrilled, but we didn't see any meerkats (who can blame them!). The madder members of our party even went on a (free!) swan pedalo and we all rode the train. The train was the most disappointing part as it didn't really go anywhere worth going! Apparently it stops at the deer park - but not in the rain. The seals were fun (we didn't do the show), as were the penguins and the kids loved spending half-an-hour in the ark play centre. Taking a wrong turn (looking for the cafe entrance) we found the Rainbow Landing. DO NOT miss this as you get to buy a small pot of "nectar" and feed the birds - a really great close encounter. We were at Woburn for 5 hours and still didn't manage to do everything. Will be back next year.

Dear MrsJClancy, Many thanks for taking the time to write a review of your recent visit to Woburn Safari Park. We've very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your day. The African Forest is home to two troops of Barbary Macaques and Patas Monkeys, all of which love nothing more than hitching a ride around their enclosure on top of visitors' cars. We hope their hilarious antics provided you with lots of laughs - they're great to watch! However, we were sorry to hear your comments regarding the Great Woburn Railway train ride. This passes through the Deer Stop and I have passed your comments on to the relevant department. Thanks again for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Kind regards, Debra Knox, Marketing Executive

Really enjoyed the safari route and like the idea that you can go round as many times as you like. The walking safari was a little sad.

We all enjoyed our visit to Woburn Safari Park and saw a lot of animals on the drive through. The tigers and lions were lying down. The bears and the wolves were loping around. The giraffes were very close, as were the rhinos and the elephants. And of course the monkeys and apes hanging onto cars and climbing on the roofs. On a warm day you do need drinks in the car and the air-con as your windows have to be closed most of the time. A loo break at the ticket office before you start the drive is a good idea! The traffic moves pretty slowly so you might think twice about bringing a very small child because it's difficult for them to see and they may get restless. The walking safari is interesting though some areas are being re-developed. There is a farm area with lots of goats you can walk around. The meerkats are in a new area where they can easily be seen along with the porcupines. The highlight for us was the lemur enclosure where they are incredibly tame, just lying around or coming up really close. On the downside - There weren't as many insects and snakes in the disscovery centre as in your average garden centre! The Australian section was also a bit sparse. No kangaroos, koalas or possums, just lots of wallabies. The cold food in the cafe is pretty good, but a bit pricey. The cafe, toilets and eating areas could all do with modernising. My only real issue was that the boating lake was completely unfenced. A nightmare with the toddlers and small children running around nearby.

As our friends had organised the VIP Tour, we had absolutely no idea what to expect. The whole experience turned out to be amazing for everyone. Both the children and the adults said it was the best thing they have ever experienced. Bob, our guide, was both informative and fun, and turned our tour into a huge adventure for us, which included feeding the elephants and giraffes, getting super close to all the animals and some great off road driving to entertain the children. A great experience, and couldn't recommend this highly enough. Bob - you were fantastic!

Very disappointing day, cost was over £70.00, Penguin World consisted of 4 penguin's? meerkat breached their fence so had been locked away and the tigers were asleep quite away so difficult to see ( I appreciate you can not control this part) the ice cream.machine dribbled out varying sizes which upset my kids, we just found it boring and disappointing. I've contacted the park however I am awaiting a response to my email. We shall not re visit, wish I had gone back and visited Twycross instead, better value all-round.

Dear Beth M, Thank you for your post. Your email that you sent to us yesterday morning (25-08-15) has been received and we are currently investigating your complaint. We will respond to you directly within 24 hours. In the meantime, should you wish to contact us, please call Adele Clegg on 01525 292124 or on [email protected]. Kind regards, Adele Clegg, Duty Manager

What a great day. Saw so many animals on the drive and on the walk about. Beats any other wild life park we've been to. Only complaint... there was only one Penguin and he looked like he was trying to entertain everyone on his own, making up for his lack if friends.

Woburn Safari Park review for families

Woburn safari park

  • Meena Hindmarch

In a nutshell

Part Road Safari, part Foot Safari, this offers some truly magical moments to get up close with the animals, but the VIP packages come at a cost.

What we tested

  • Fantastic Road Safari which you can circuit as many times as you like, huge soft play area, fun all-weather activity, Foot Safari is easy to get around with young children
  • Uninspiring food options, soft play café ran out of food when we were there, disappointing sea lion show, inquisitive animals may damage your car

COVID-19 safety update

Woburn safari park

When we visited:

Meena visited Woburn Safari Park with her husband and 3 children aged 5, 3 and 9 months, on an extremely hot and sunny day in July.

Fellow reviewer, Georgina, visited with her husband and children aged 7 and 10, during a rainy day with sunshine, showers, and thunderstorms in May.

What’s Woburn Safari Park like since Covid-19?

  • Tickets are only available to purchase online to reduce all unnecessary contact with ticket lane cashiers.
  • As per the Government advice, they recommend that visitors wear face coverings in indoor areas.
  • Visitors must wear face coverings in the Land of Lemurs, based on vet advice, because lemurs are vulnerable to Covid-19.

What age is Woburn Safari Park best for?

Best for: Children aged 3-10

Still good fun for: Older children and teenagers

Avoid if: You have a baby who isn’t fond of their car seat

How much does it cost in 2022?

  • Online prices: Adults £28.99, children (3-15 years) £20.99, under-3s free, disabled and carer (2-person ticket) £28.99, additional carer £17.99
  • The Safari Saver ticket, which includes admission to the Road Safari and Foot Safari, all free leisure attractions, a guidebook and bottle of water on arrival and a meal and drink in one of the two restaurants, costs adults £40.00 (saving £7.94) and children £30.00 (saving £5.47).

Are there discounts or cheap tickets available for Woburn Safari Park?

  • Check out Picniq for any ticket offers.
  • You can’t currently use Tesco Clubcard vouchers to pay for your Woburn Safari Park tickets, but keep an eye on the website in case this changes.
  • If you plan on staying overnight, save money on a ticket and accommodation package with Holiday Extras .

Any extra charges once I’m there?

All talks and demonstrations are free except for the sea lion show, which is an extra £2 per person. Having seen some great shows at similar attractions, we were disappointed. We found the show short and unimpressive, and it was followed by a seemingly unrelated 3D movie about a boy discovering he is part Big Foot. Personally, we wouldn’t recommend it.

Woburn safari park

Fellow reviewer Georgina was lucky enough to try a VIP experience. There are different options available that allow visitors to go off-road in a VIP Land Rover to get closer to the animals, including the elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, or rhinos.

She said: “My 10 year old loves big cats, and we went on the ‘Meet the African Lions’, which included a 30-minute experience with our own tour guide. The Kingdom of Carnivores is 32 acres and is one of the largest exhibits in Europe. We were thrilled to get close to the Amur tiger, Vera, some black bears and their pride of lions. The experience is expensive (from £179 for 2 people), but it was incredible to get so near to these animals. Our guide, Barney, was hugely knowledgeable and answered the many questions from my children. This would make an incredible gift for any animal lover, and you get free entry into the park afterwards.

Woburn safari park

“When we were there, they offered mini-VIP experiences to meet the meerkats and giant tortoises at £15 per person. We saw one mum and daughter sitting in the meerkat enclosure as the meerkats were fed. It is definitely worth looking out for what they might be offering on the day.”

“Another attraction was the Giraffe Trail High Ropes, aimed at kids aged 5 to 12, which involves 30 minutes of adventuring, whilst in a harness, before whizzing down a zipline. There is an additional cost (£6.99 per child) for this, and it was raining quite a lot when we were there, so we skipped this.”

How long will we spend at Woburn Safari Park?

This would be a full day out, which would comfortably give you time to go around the Road Safari more than once (which we would highly recommend) and see everything in the zoo. Each time we went around the road safari it took around an hour, but the time seemed to fly by. The speed at which you can get around is largely dependent on other cars stopping and animals deciding to block the road. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend entering it if you are in a hurry.

Woburn safari park

Georgina added: “It is worth spending the whole day here and driving around more than once. You never know what you might see during each circuit, and if you go round during the late afternoon, which may be quieter, you may see different animals. During one of our circuits, the two resident wolves came really close to the car, which was amazing.”

What does Woburn Safari Park offer for families?

There are more than 1000 wild animals to see at Woburn Safari Park . Leave plenty of time to enjoy spotting them all, as a day out here includes unlimited repeat circuits of the Road Safari drive through animal reserves, plus the Foot Safari with a daily programme of keeper talks and demonstrations. The Road Safari was definitely the highlight for the whole family and well worth planning for multiple circuits as we saw different things each time we went round.

Georgina added: “We also enjoyed some informative talks. Older children will love hearing more about the resident red panda, Maisy, the bush dogs, and the birds of prey.”

“For adventurers, there is a Go Ape Tree Top Adventure for kids aged 10 and over. It was closed when we were there, and additional charges apply (£33 for 16 years + and £25 for 10-15 year olds) – see the website for more details.”

What shouldn’t be missed?

Highlights for our family were:

  • Entering the Road Safari and spotting a rhino in the distance immediately caused a ripple of magical excitement throughout the car.
  • We felt like we were in another world as a herd of giraffes crossed the road in front of our car and paused to look through the window.
  • The Road Safari gives you and your family a place to escape the weather and still have fun. On our visit the issue was the heat, but it would also work for cold weather and probably even the rain.
  • Walking among the lemurs on the Foot Safari and encountering some cheeky new friends!
  • Georgina adds: “We absolutely loved getting close to the big cats on our VIP tour and also enjoyed a number of talks on offer.”

Woburn safari park

What was the Foot Safari like at Woburn?

Compared to the Road Safari the Foot Safari was relatively small with much less to see, and some of the areas looked a little tired. Our highlight of the Foot Safari was definitely the lemur enclosure, where you get to walk through among the lemurs. They are very inquisitive and playful creatures, and one particularly cheeky black footed lemur leapt into my husband’s back carrier searching for food, much to the joy and excitement of our children and many others.

Georgina added: ‘I agree with this; some areas are tired, but there is loads to see if you explore it in its entirety. We loved looking at the penguins, squirrel monkeys, sea lions, lorikeets, and The Discovery Zone. There were reptiles, amphibians, and insects, including the teeny tiny golden mantilla frog. We also enjoyed walking through the Australian Walkabout and seeing two wallabies with babies in their pouches looking out.”

Woburn safari park

What else is there to do once you’ve seen the animals?

There is a small outdoor play area suitable for younger children and a large indoor soft play which the kids loved. Also included in the price of your ticket are swan, dragon, and pelican pedalos and a train ride. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try either of these as the queue for the pedalos was large and the train was broken on the day of our visit.

Georgina said: “We hopped on the train and had a fun ride on the pedalos. There is also the bob cat slide, which was closed when we visited.”

What you need to know before you go?

  • Book your tickets online – walk up tickets are not available.
  • Learn some facts about some of the animals you will see on the Road Safari at home – there is nothing to read as you go around and you can entertain your kids with your impressive knowledge.
  • We were unimpressed by the cafes so would recommend bringing your own lunch. By 4pm the café in the soft play had run out of most food options on our visit, so we had to make alternative plans for the kids’ dinner.
  • If you are very car proud this might not be the best day out for you, as the animals do come up to your car and can cause damage. This is not just limited to the cheeky monkeys as our wing mirror was given a firm nuzzle by a passing water buffalo.
  • Long sleeves, trousers and socks must be worn on the red and blue slides in the Mammoth Play Ark soft play area at all times. Height restrictions also apply – 1m for the blue slide and 1.2m for the red slide

Can any cars go on the Road Safari?

Almost all types, but be aware you can only enter Woburn Safari Park in your own vehicle, and you cannot enter the park on foot.

There is no height or weight restriction on vehicles, but if you have a soft top convertible then you will not be able to enjoy all the areas of the Road Safari (in case the carnivores fancy a snack!).

Georgina added: “If you wish, you can bypass the monkey area. When we went around a very determined monkey was trying to get something off a man’s van. One jumped on our car and had a good inspection of the windscreen wipers but thankfully, moved on!”

Woburn safari park

What to bring?

Snacks! The real draw of Woburn is the Road Safari, meaning you will be spending quite prolonged periods in the car (each circuit took us around an hour). Although you can take routes to shorten the circuit it is not easy to abandon a route once you have begun. Therefore, bring plenty of snacks, or perhaps entertainment such as crayons to keep the kids happy in the car if they are prone to getting bored.

Georgina advised: “There are plenty of places to shelter in the Foot Safari on a busy day, but bring rain jackets and umbrellas if the weather is changeable.”

What are the food and drink facilities like at Woburn Safari Park?

There are several different places to eat, but we felt the food was uninspiring and overpriced for what it was so would recommend bringing your own. We ate lunch at the main restaurant which was fine. Later we attempted to get the kids some pizza at the Mammoth Play Ark, but they had largely sold out of food by 4pm. There are several other cafes dotted around selling standard fare.

Georgina agreed: “We were also not that inspired by the food and ate before we came into the park. We bought teas and drinks at The Lookout Café later in the day and also ice creams – there are a lot of places dotted around the Foot Safari to buy snacks.”

Can you take a picnic?

Yes. There were some lovely places to sit and have a picnic around the lake, which could be a great option on a sunny day, but there were also covered picnic areas if the weather leaves much to be desired.

Georgina added: “A picnic would be a great option for money-saving, as there are lovely areas to sit and eat and plenty of bins to dispose of any rubbish.”

What are the toilets like?

There are plenty of loos scattered throughout the park, all of which appear to have baby change facilities. There are toilets at the entrance, so make sure you use these before going on the Road Safari because once underway, you cannot get out of your car.

Was it pushchair friendly?

When you’re in the car you won’t have to worry about that, and the Foot Safari is quite small and easy to navigate with a pushchair. There were some areas, such as the lemur enclosure, where you couldn’t take a pushchair and there were quite steep steps down to the sea lion show, should you choose to watch it.

Opening dates and times:

Open daily from 27th March until 15 October; the park is open daily from 9.30am to 4.45pm (last entry), closing at 5.45pm.

These hours may change periodically, so always check the website .

When is the best time to visit Woburn Safari Park?

The park is quietest on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday 10-12pm is the busiest time to visit.

Georgina said: ‘Our tour guide recommended going around the Road Safari either first thing (so you are one of the first cars) or later in the day. Our family also benefitted from being in the Foot Safari when it was quieter in the afternoon.”

How to get to Woburn Safari Park:

Woburn Safari Park is in Milton Keynes (approximately one hour’s drive from London, Oxford, Cambridge and Birmingham).

  • We drove there and it is easy to navigate to and well signposted once you get close. The best satnav postcode depends on where you’re approaching from (there are two entrances).
  • From J13 of the M1: follow signs to Woburn Safari Park and use MK17 9QN for the entrance gate on High Street in Ridgmont.
  • From the A5: follow signs to Woburn village – Woburn Safari Park is signposted. Use the postcode MK43 0XB for the entrance gate on Turnpike Road, Husborne Crawley.
  • Woburn Safari park is only accessible in your own vehicle, so you will have to drive there.

Do you have to pay for parking?

No – parking is ample and free in the Foot Safari area.

Worth a long car journey?

It took us an hour to get there and I personally would not recommend travelling much further than that as you will also be spending a lot of the day in the car even after you arrive.

Georgina agreed, saying: “It also took us an hour, and I agree with this. There is a lot of driving once you get there, so factor that into any driving time.”

Which hotels or holiday accommodation are near Woburn Safari Park?

  • Set on the same beautiful estate as the safari park is The Woburn Hotel , which has interconnecting family rooms in an 18th-century building, plus an award-winning restaurant
  • The family-friendly 3-star Heath Inn has comfy family rooms and is a 12-minute drive to Woburn Safari Park
  • For a home-away-from-home feel, look for deals on Vrbo and Airbnb .
  • Find family-friendly hotel deals in Woburn on Booking.com

Nearby attractions for a longer day out:

If your children can’t get enough of animals, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is a 30-minute drive away, and if they’re acting like little monkeys they can burn off some energy at Go Ape Woburn . Nearby, Woburn Abbey and Gardens is home to 1,200 deer and a rather nice-looking tea room.

MFM verdict:

It was a fun day out with some truly magical moments during the Road Safari, but this wasn’t our favourite animal experience in the UK and the cost of entry was relatively high.

Georgina added: “For our family, this day out offered value for money if you see everything you can, enjoy the talks, and are lucky to enjoy some animal encounters on the Road Safari.”

4 bear cubs take time to 'paws' and reflect during lazy afternoon on water at England safari park

Keepers said they were delighted to see the four younger cubs, named harvard, maple, colorado and aspen, named for their north american origins in the wild, head right over to the swan boat to "investigate" their new friend.

A video shared by the Woburn Safari Park in England showed four bear cubs enjoying an afternoon on the water after a small lake formed after recent heavy rain.

RIDGMONT, England – A sloth of North American black bears was recently treated to a relaxing afternoon on the water at the Woburn Safari Park in England after recent heavy rain created a small lake within their enclosure.

So, please. Bear with us. You’re about to read some em bear issing bear puns.

Staff came up with the idea to keep the bears entertained after the lake formed and noticed one of the park’s swan boats was waiting for new pedals.

"So, we had the idea of turning this into interesting enrichment for them," said Tommy Babington, Deputy Head of the carnivores section of the park.

The swan boat was then placed on the lake with the hopes that the bears would find the new addition bear y interesting.

Babington said the bears were "immediately intrigued" and "wasted no time in investigating the swan paddle boat."

Woburn Safari Park shared photos and videos of the bears discovering their new friend on the water and showed them taking some time to take in the sights and paws and reflect on their short lives so far.

"It was great fun for visitors to see them climb on board," Babington said. "We love devising new ways to provide food, scent and habitat enrichment that stimulates their natural foraging behaviors."

The park says the young sibling black bears, two males and two females, spend a lot of time foraging, play fighting, eating and sleeping.

The park said that bears are naturally very curious animals, and keepers will encourage that behavior with different kinds of activities for them to help keep their minds and bodies active.

While it may be a "less conventional approach" to keeping them stimulated, the park said "it certainly was a hit."

And the story of the bears is quickly going viral after the park shared a video of the bears enjoying their time at the newly formed lake on TikTok .

Fantastic day out, even on a rainy day!

We wanted to do something with our last day off over the Christmas holidays (new years day) but the weather was awful and we couldn't think of anywhere to go where we wouldn't get soaked, until we thought of Woburn Safari Park, which is about 40 mins away from us. We are very glad we decided to go as it was a great day out for all of us. We went as a young family with a 13 month old who loved it too. Although the weather was wet and windy, we did see a lot of animals. They put a lot of the animals shelters near the track, so even if the animals are seeking refuge from the weather (you can't blame them!), you can still see them (and in my experience much better and clearer than in any zoo!). We saw lots of animals, and due to it being a quiet day, we were able to drive around as many times as we wanted, and able to stop for as long as we wanted to see the animals. We visited the cafe at lunch time and we each bought a meal, I had a chicken curry hot dinner which was very nice and my husband had a sandwich which compared to the hot meal seemed quite pricey but its what you expect in these places! Still, our food was very nice, the cafe was very basic, you can tell it was built a fair few years ago, but all the more all of the facilities were very clean and looked after. If it is a cold day, don't leave your coat in the car thinking the cafe will be warm, it seemed to have no heating and everyone in there was wrapped up in coats etc!! We had a wonderful day, we ended the day by paying a visit to the Ark indoor play centre; a very good soft play area with a separate, reasonable sized part for under 5s. The bigger child's play area seemed also very good, although I didn't experience this part myself, there appeared to be lots of children having fun, and there were lots of fun slides for them, including one which seemed to be a really fun (but scary!) vertical drop slide, which even the parents where having a go on and loved! My only niggle would be, that although they did warn us that some attractions may be closed (on the foot safari/leasure area), they didn't specify which, which made us walk around in the awful weather aimlessly walking up to closed attractions not knowing if they were open or closed until we tried the doors. It would have been helpful if there was a notice or an A-board in the main centre part before the cafe, listing what is open and what is closed, or a notice by the time table of shows. I have the same niggle for lack of signeage with the Ark play centre, as we followed the signs to the entrance, which asked us to walk right the way around the whole thing to get to the entrance, where we then came accross a lift which was out of order (we had a heavy buggy) meaning we carried the buggy down very steep (and slippery as we and the buggy were wet) steps, only to realised when we got the the ground level where the play area was, that they had opened the other exits so people could come and go without climbing steps etc, something that would have been very handy for us had we seen a sign directing us that way!!! Over all we had a fantastic day (I'm sorry for pointing out 'niggles' but these seemed like very common sense organisational aspects that can easily be resolved if noted!) We were not bothered that quite a few areas were closed, as we understood it was 'low season' as well as awful weather, and the ticket price reflected this (price is reduced during low periods) so we were happy with this. We are most certainly planning on going to the park again, we will come again in the summer and hopefully be able to make the most of the foot safari section!

This was the second trip to Woburn for my partner and I and we enjoyed it even more than the first time, three years ago. I think what made the difference was coming early shotly after the opening time. Not only were there fewer people but we also saw more animals out and about on our first circuit driving round than on the second later in the afternoon. (Admittedly, it was a very cold and windy day so you can't blame the animals for seeking refuge.) Among the hightlights were the scampering lemurs and monkeys jumping all over the car.Coming early also allowed us to go to as many of the keeper talks as possible, one of the highlights. Even then, it was difficult to get to them all as the animal areas are quite far apart and the talks themselves are not very long. Also, a couple of them weren't running as advertised in the programme, so it's worth checking at the entrance if there were specific ones you were interested in. Book online to save a pound per ticket. Overall, we had a wonderful day and stayed until closing.

Thanks to Ranger Bob and his team or or safari today organised by Sam Bertho of Woburn Inn. The tour was amazing. Its so lovely to see how all the staff know the animals names and are so affectionate to them. The animals live in a wonderful environment and we could get really close for fabulous shots. The most amazing thing was an affectionate ostrich at the car window. Thank you ranger Bob for a fab day!!!

Well having not been to Woburn for over 20 years I was looking forward to seeing how it had changed. We brought the all inclusive ticket, this included admission to the park, a souvenir programme/book, admission to the sea lion, 3D show and a meal with a drink (about £30 each I think) - Great value for your money best way to do it. The park has really grown up and was a great day out, we went mid-week which meant it was not to busy. The animals all looked in great shape and you could get really close to those in the Safari park and go round numerous times, the staff were very clued up and clearly enjoyed working with the animals. Would go again, well worth it, a great day out.

We had the most magical experience at Woburn today. The staff were universally helpful and warm and obviously very clued up about all of their charges but Ranger Bobs VIP tour is something we will all remember for years to come. I have never been so close to so many awesome animals and to see a bear lolling around up a tree, soaking up the December sun was simply amazing. The monkeys were a clear winner amongst the boys for their cheeky antics and they laughed about them all the way home. Thank you Woburn, some serious memories were made today.

Just had a VIP off road safari here, and I simply can't recommend it enough. Ranger Bob clearly loves the animals and certainly knows his stuff. Was an absolute joy being driven and talking with him! Amazing how close we got to some absolutely beautiful animals and would do it all again in a heartbeat. It was so great to see the animals with so much space to roam around and they all look incredibly healthy. Brilliant. Simply brilliant!

Thank you very much for your fantastic review, it's wonderful to receive such an enthusiastic response a customer and we are delighted you enjoyed your time at the Safari Park. The animals at the park are cared for by a dedicated team of keepers, working hard to give them the best care and I'm sure they will appreciate getting your wonderful comments. We hope you'll visit us again soon! Kind regards, Abigail Crowley Leisure Marketing Manager

How to do San Diego, from Beaches to Zoos.

9 Reasons to Visit San Diego Safari Park in the Rain

Oh no! Rain’s forecast for San Diego Safari Park. Should you go? What’s their rain policy? Can you still see elephants & other animals, the tours & shows?

San Diego Safari Park’s worth visiting in the rain. Many animals are more active when it’s wet. It’s less crowded. Africa Tram waiting times are shorter. Cheetahs still run. Shows go on but may be closed in a downpour. Paid for a tour? If it’s canceled you’ll be contacted for a refund or reschedule.

Visiting San Diego Safari Park in the rain is fun! Collage image by Nancy Ulrich.

There are actually some advantages to going to Safari Park when it’s raining. There are also a few downsides. Read on to discover what you need to know to enjoy a rainy day at the San Diego Safari Park.

San Diego Safari Park’s Rain Policy

San Diego Safari Park is open 365 days a week. Rain or shine. Call 760-747-8702 for information on restaurants that are open or closed and animals that are off-exhibit.

Rain Forecasts in San Diego Are Often Wrong

A typical San Diego TV weather expert...just kidding.

Precipitation prognostication in San Diego is an inexact science (I’m being generous here…). The TV meteorologist’s “STORM WATCH” announced (with barely concealed glee) 2 to 4 days in advance in San Diego is often wrong.

Severe wet weather tends to veer north into Orange and Los Angeles counties. San Diego often gets a mild sprinkle when a deluge of biblical proportions has been forecast days before.

If it’s the day before or the day of, and there’s still a 100% chance of precipitation, check the hour-by-hour forecast . They’ve become much more accurate in recent years. You may find that the hardest rain is supposed to happen when it won’t interfere with your Safari Park visit.

If it’s raining now and you’re wondering if you should go, use some common sense . Stay where you are if you turn on the television and see reporters wading hip-deep at flooded street intersections, Order a movie and eat in. Also, some San Diegans don’t know how to drive in wet weather. Their brains get soggy and they don’t think to slow down.

However, if you don’t need a boat to get to Safari Park you can have a wonderful time.

Why Visit San Diego Safari Park in the Rain? (Here are 9 Reasons)

1) many safari park animals like rain.

They’re more active because they’re not feeling heat lethargy. But if you have your heart set on seeing a particular species call the Safari Park information line at 760-747-8702 before you go. Make sure that your favorite critters aren’t off-exhibit due to the weather.

  • Are San Diego Safari Park elephants out in the rain? YES. Elephants love rain. They’re like little kids. They splash in puddles, roll in the mud and throw it around. Watching them is TONS of fun, like docking with your inner child.
  • Rhinos, especially young ones LOVE the rain . Definition of cuteness; chubby baby rhinos scampering in the mud.
  • Cape buffalo don’t like the rain much . They’ll probably be sheltering under trees. But they’re impressive as they glower at you as you go by in the Africa Tram.
  • Giraffes’ long eyelashes look marvelous sprinkled with glittering raindrops. When they’re out it the rain they tend to put their butts to the wind. Most will be facing in the same direction. It’s rather eerie.
  • Tigers sit next to the windows in the rain. They like swimming, but would rather nap in a dry spot. The Tiger Trail exhibit was designed so that there are overhangs in front of the windows where the cats can rest out of the rain. The Sambutan Longhouse will also keep you dry as you take amazing close-ups and selfies with these regal cats.
  • Lions also sit close to viewing windows in the rain. They often lay with their HUGE feet against the glass on the faux rocks on the north side of their enclosure. Comparing the size of your hands to their feet is humbling. They also take shelter by the window close to the jeep. In both places, you can stay dry while spending quality time with some big kitties.

2) Shows and Keeper Talks go on

In mild drizzles and even light rains, you’ll still be able to experience them. But all shows and talks can be canceled due to inclement weather or other conditions.

The Frequent Flyers bird show

(Temporarily canceled due to avian flu)

It’s a free-flying bird show and they don’t want any of their birds blown off-course or lost due to severe winds.

Training Talk

More free-flight birds. Again, the keepers don’t want to risk harming or losing any of their charges.

Tiger Keeper talks – these 15-minute tiger interaction sessions usually take place at 11:45 AM. Tigers don’t mind getting wet, and they do like their treats. But sometimes it’s too wet for the keepers’ comfort.

Also, thunder and lightning make kitties of all sizes skittish. Especially since thunderstorms are rare in San Diego. You can hardly blame keepers for not wanting to get their fingers close to an agitated 300-pound tiger.

3) Reserve a Tour or Safari Without Worry

If your paid Safari is canceled due to bad weather, you can either reschedule or get a refund. Your safety and that of the animals are the biggest concerns at Safari Park.

The staff at the park works very hard to notify you of cancelations as soon as they know. They understand that many people have to travel almost an hour to get there. So they do their best to save you from making an unnecessary trip.

The very popular Caravan Safaris have canvas roofs on the trucks. So you don’t have to sit still while being dripped upon if it is raining.

The following 3 attractions are sometimes shut down or canceled because of bad weather. You can reschedule or get a refund:

  • Cheetah Safari – Wet. Cat. Enough said.
  • Balloon Safari – Will close if it’s windy. Sometimes this attraction closes down on bright, sunny days because of strong breezes.
  • Ziplines may not be operating. If the lines are too wet they aren’t safe.

4) Sun Up Cheetah Safaris still happen

cheetah face

The free Cheetah Run has been suspended due to COVID. But you can still see a cheetah run at full speed in the Sun Up Cheetah Safari . It’s brain-boggling and should not be missed. Light rain or drizzle doesn’t stop cheetahs from hunting in the wild. And it doesn’t stop the Safari Park’s spotted speedsters from chasing a lure. But sometimes, being cats, they just don’t feel like running in the wet.

A heavy downpour is a different matter. Keepers don’t want their cheetah to lose their footing and potentially injure themselves. That would be an accident happening at 60+ mph. That’s not healthy whether you’re in a car or if you’re a running cat.

5) No raincoat? No problem!

If you didn’t pack a raincoat or umbrella for your vacation don’t let that stop you from seeing the animals. Purchase an inexpensive plastic rain poncho at Safari Park. Stop at the Safari Outfitters store on your left as you enter. One of the red-shirted (jacketed) volunteers will point you in the right direction.

6) No wait lines for the Africa tram

If it’s raining there will be no wait lines. On sunny weekend days, you sometimes have to wait an hour or more to board the passenger cars.

And if you do have to wait a bit until the next tram arrives you will be under a roof. On very cool days the park has propane-powered heaters to warm those in the front row waiting to board.

7) Super fast restaurant service

Call the Safari Park information line at 760-747-8702 to ask which restaurants they plan to open that day. Especially check to see if the upscale Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook will be opening that day. And eating establishments at the park will close down if there’s no one there. Ask one of the red-shirted or jacketed volunteers for more information when you get into the park.

Eateries that are most likely to be open are Thorntree Terrace , Safari Coffee Outpost and Congo Kitchen . They are all close to the entrance/exit and get the highest foot traffic throughout the day.

To help you choose where to eat, here’s an article that I wrote on where’s the best food at Safari Park .

8) You’ll find a great parking spot

No need to pay for upgraded parking. You’ll find plenty in prime row 3 and row 4 spots.

9) It’s a unique experience

Visiting Safari Park in the rain is an unforgettable experience.

It sounds different because the park is quieter. You can hear rhino & elephant feet swishing in the mud.

Raindrops on flower in San Diego Safari Park.

It looks like someone sprinkled diamond glitter on the flowers. And the foliage is all green and shiny. San Diego Safari Park is a world-renowned botanical garden as well as a first-rate zoo. And it is worth seeing just for the plants (along with the famous Balboa Park gardens ).

It even smells different. The air in southern California usually has a slightly automotive taint. But that vanishes in the rain. You smell the growing things and the musty animal scents.

Don’t let a little rain keep you from having a wild time at Safari Park.

Now that you know that going to this attraction when it’s wet won’t be a waste of time and money, check out all there is to see and do at Safari Park . That page has a full summary of the activities, animal exhibits, shows, keeper talks, and Safari tours for you. So you can have even more fun exploring San Diego Zoo Safari Park in the rain.

TOP-11 Moscow Parks to Visit

I have chosen the best 11 Moscow parks to visit and spend a beautiful time for you. Do not miss and choose one that you like the most – cycling, festivals, flowers, panoramic views and many other things are waiting for you!

Gorky Park (The Central Park of Culture and Leisure) – The main one of the Moscow Parks

In my opinion this park could be called the main park of the city. Why? Because of its huge territory, the central location and the amount of people visiting the park daily.  It was founded in 1928 and in 2011 it was totally reconstructed. Now it pleases visitors with modern objects and soft green lawns.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 9

The Gorky park is a the right choice for everyone! The youth will like a free WiFi, bicycles, skateboards and other rentals; the couples will enjoy spending time near the river, watching a sunset; parents will appreciate colorful playgrounds and a room for mother and child. Everyone can find something for themselves: from yoga classes  to watching movies in a cozy summer cinema, from dance classes to volleyball playground. Gorky Park is also the venue for all kinds of exhibitions, festivals, events for children and adults. During the winter there is one of the biggest skating rinks in the park.

Museon Art Park – A Second Gorky they say

“Museon” is located on the opposite side of Krimsky Val street. And right now some people believe that Gorky and Museon together is a one space sharing the same beauty.

  • Oktybrskaya or Park Kultuty metro station, Krimsky Val, 2

The Park of Arts was named this way because there is the largest composition of open-air sculptures in Russia. In its territory there are already more than 1000 unique exhibits: from monuments of the socialist realism era to various kinds of contemporary art. But this is not all the attractions of the park. In recent years, “Museon” has become an important cultural site of the city. The park regularly hold many different concerts, festivals, educational projects in the field of art and design. There is a Central House of the Artist, a comfortable summer cinema and other attractions on territory. Be sure to stroll pedestrian Crimean embankment, which looks like a modern park.

Neskuchny Garden – True Russian Nature is Here

Neskuchny garden is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. Today it is also seen as a part of the Gorky Park. This landscape park is one of the oldest in the city and is protected by the state. Its name was received from the Neskuchnoye Estate of  Prince Trubetskoi which is still located in the park.

  • Leninsky Prospekt metro station, Leninsky Prospect, 30

This park is famous mostly for its location close to the Gorky park. It is a quite place with true nature, lots of trees and squirrels and also ancient architecture. As in every park, there are sports and playgrounds, cafes and even a football field.

Zaryadye Park – 5 Steps Away From The Red Square

The area of this brand new park was opened only in September 2017 and located in the very heart of Moscow – right near the Red Square.

  • Open from 10AM to 10PM
  • Teatralnaya, Okhotnyi ryad, Ploschad Revolutsii

The park has 4 zones, each of them represent different parts of Russian landscapes. Above the river there is a floating bridge from where you get to see one of the best panoramic views on Moscow. Other attractions of the park are 5D cinema where you can take a flight above Moscow, few cafes and restaurants, pretty lakes with fishes and old preserved churches. In addition there is still being built a  philharmonic hall, covered with a huge dome and an Ice cage where the temperature will always stay below zero degrees.

When you are on the Red Square do not miss it!

All-Russia Exhibition Center (VDNKh) – The Soviet Style Moscow Park

Park VDNKh – one of the most famous parks in Moscow. This park is one of the sights of the city as it hasn’t changed much since the Soviet era.

  • VDNKh metro station, Prospect Mira, 119

The symbol of VDNKh is a fountain with 16 women symbolizing the friendship of the nations of the USSR. Around this fountain there are all the pavilions representing 16 republics. Now inside the pavilions you find various shops, cafes and exhibitions. If you go deep inside the park you will find a rocket Vostok and and an aircraft. What is funny the inside of the aircraft there is actually a photo exhibition. Near the northern entrance you there is a famous sculpture “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman”. It is extremely famous among Russians as all the movies by Mosfilm corporation used to start with the picture of this statue. But if you go further inside the park you will reach a very calm area. A lake is there, forest and birds singing. Since the park occupies a large area I suggest you to rent a bicycle.

Sokolniki Park – A Place For A Hunt Or For Leisure?

The park got its name because of the royal falconry, which took place there in the past when there was a dense forest. (Sokol means a falcon.) In 2011 it was significantly transformed: updated lawns, landscaped ponds and picnic areas, restored summer cinema and theater, a large rose garden, sports grounds, bicycle paths and other things.

  • Sokolniki metro station, Sokolnichesky Val, 1, p. 1

From the main entrance along the alley you can walk to the Sokolniki circle, where 8 alleys form 9 sectors, in each of them you will find trees of the same breed.  The park is famous for its rosary, as well as flower decoration. On the territory of the park there are concert halls, a library, amusement zone, dances zone and many many other attractions. In winter the park has a skating rink (a free of charge one) and ski runs. During the warm season you can rent a bicycle.

Tsaritsino Park – A Different World Inside Moscow

Here you can walk for hours, admiring the most beautiful nature and magnificent architecture.

  • Open from 6AM to 12AM
  • Tsaritsyno metro station, Dolsky, 1

The most amazing part of the park is the lake with a light and musical fountain. Every evening the fountain starts the show. Lights and music combined make you feel like you are not in Moscow but in a fairy tale. The park is also well equipped for sports lovers and healthy lifestyle. There are volleyball and basketball courts, a tennis court, sports facilities for acrobatics, bodybuilding equipment.

What I personally like about this park is the atmosphere. This place is actually far from the city center but I love going there anyway. Whenever I go there I feel like I left Moscow with all its hectic lifestyle. It is the place where I relax, enjoy myself or a company of my friends and feel kind of different. By the way totally suggested for a date!

Kolomenskoye Park – Combination Of Reserve and Architecture

The Kolomenskoye park is actually a Museum-Reserve. It is a former residence of Russian tsars and one of the most scenic places in Moscow.

  • May to September – open from 8AM to 12AM, October to April – from 8AM to 9PM
  • Kolomenskoye metro station, Andropov Ave, 39

Alike with Tsaritsino park Kolomenskoye park has its own special atmosphere with all the architecture, trees, ponds and even a river bank. The park regularly hosts various folk festivals and different fairs. In summer time you can play with kites or rent a bicycle and ride around the huge area of the park.

I love the view that you get on the city from one of the hills near the river. I love the apple trees alleys and the beautiful churches. It is also a bit far from the city center but yet worth going there. One of my best friends even celebrated her wedding there.

Aptekarsky Garden or Botanical garden of the Moscow State University – The Best Botanical Garden in The World

Aptekar in Russian language means a pharmacist so basically it is a pharmacist’s garden. It was founded in 1706 by Peter The Great for growing medicinal plants for the royal family. But later they moved it from under the walls of the Kremlin to the current location.

  • Open from 10AM to 8PM
  • Prospect Mira metro station, Prospekt Mira, 26

In the botanical garden there are no attractions and noisy crowds of tourists. The area of the garden is not as big as any other park in Moscow. And the entrance is not free. But this exactly what makes this park one of the most comfortable in the city. In the Aptekarsky garden they grow thousands of different plants, flowers and trees. Some of the trees are more than 300 years old. They held different festivals there: flowers festivals, sand and ice sculptures expositions.

For me it is one of the most beautiful parks not only in Moscow but in the world. I have never seen so many different flowers and plants anywhere else. And trust me I am a real park lover. And what is more the staff really takes care about every single tree or plant there, some of the trees have names and stories. I love it there and I think the price is really worth what you get.

Victory Park – A Park That Makes Us Remember The War

The park is located on the Poklonnaya Hill and it has one of the world’s largest memorial complexes dedicated to the World War II. The park was opened for the 50th anniversary of the Victory on May 9, 1995. It is also one of the main venues in the city for holding a variety of mass events.

  • Park Pobedy metro station, Brothers Fonchenko, 7

On the main avenue of the park there are with 1418 fountains – exactly as long as the war lasted. Fountains make five water terraces, symbolizing five years of military operations. And in the center of the park there is the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. If you are interested in the history of the war do not miss it. The Poklonnaya Hill is a part of the park and from the hill you get one of the best views on the city of Moscow. And I could say this is the best place for watching the fireworks during the mass celebrations. But be aware it gets too crowded then. As in most of the other big parks you can rent a bicycle or rollers there.

Izmailovsky Park – A Mix of a Big Forest and Attractions

Izmaylovsky Park occupies a huge green territory, making up a large part of the Izmailovo district. The park consists of two parts: Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest and the forest park of Izmailovo. First part is full of attractions and restaurants while the second one is like a real forest with pine trees, birch groves, beautiful clearings and ponds.

  • Izmaylovskaya, Shosse Entuziastov or Partizanskaya metro stations, Izmaylovsky Park

It is easy to spend there a whole day. A large landscaped area and a lot of various entertainments for children and adults will help you not to get bored. An observation wheel, a boat station, children’s playgrounds, a dance floor, sports grounds, a skate park – all this is only a small part of the possible leisure activities. In the park there are bike paths and a rental services.

I don’t go there often to be honest. But the park is very very close whenever to a souvenir market on Partizanskaya metro station. And whenever the weather is nice and I have enough of free time I stroll through the alleys of the park and enjoy the nature. So if you are going to the souvenir market too and you have enough free time then do go to the park too.
