Why We Love it and You Will Too

 • The Nkomazi tent-style suites are authentic and comfortable, offering a true African glamping experience.
 • Enjoy traditional sundowners (or a freshly brewed morning coffee) during 4x4 game drives led by expert rangers. Expect to see giraffes, impalas, gnus, zebra, jackals, and warthogs, all amid the vast sprawling mountains and the Komati River that runs through the reserve.
 • Move alongside nature on interactive bush walks. Try a specialised birding safari or cast out a line in the Komati River.
 • Seek out your new favourite spot by your private plunge pool, or out on the game-viewing deck. Don’t forget to bring a good book and pair it with a crisp drink from the bar!
 • Nkomazi Game Reserve in Mpumalanga is also home to some of the oldest rock formations on earth, embellished by ancient San rock art.

Your Nkomazi Game Reserve Experience

Nkomazi Game Reserve in Mpumalanga is surrounded by mountains, highveld and riverine valleys. Reaching into the south-west over 15 000 hectares, this is just the place to tune back into nature.

It's a well-run camp, with top-notch service and a professional, attentive team, but first, let’s talk about the accommodation itself. The "tents" guests stay in are the most luxurious you will ever set eyes on.

Some call it glamping, we call it exactly what a safari experience should look and feel like. Think sturdy canvas walls, timber framings and furnishings that look right off the set of “Out of Africa”. The amenities are second to none, with king-size beds, big puffy pillows and soft bathrobes.

At Nkomazi Game Reserve, it is the little touches when you least expect it that will impress you ― hot towels after a game drive, melting hot chocolate when it’s nippy, or a crisp G & T when it's hot outside.

The game drives are also a defining factor, led by guides who are extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about introducing guests to the resident herd of lions, as well as the vast range of other game, such as elephants, zebra, and warthog. Aside from animals, you can also experience some ancient San rock art etched onto some of the oldest rock formations in South Africa.

From Riverside Retreat Spa treatments to perfectly-timed sundowners to lazy afternoons in the pool gazing over the surrounding bushveld, nothing is ever rushed at Nkomazi. The only complaint you will ever make about the place is not staying long enough.

Mpumalanga, which means “place where the sun rises”, is situated on the eastern side of South Africa and is one of the country’s nine provinces. It is home to a diverse range of fauna and flora which makes it a remarkable destination. World-famous attractions such as the Kruger National Park, Pilgrim’s Rest, the Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window are all located in this region.

The province is divided longitudinally into the Highveld, on the west, and the Lowveld, on the right. The Highveld is typically cooler than the Lowveld and experiences frosty winters whereas the Lowveld region has a subtropical climate, with milder winters. Summer brings rainfall and refreshing thunderstorms to the region.

Mala Mala Game Reserve: South Africa’s exclusive safari destination

Backside of an African leopard walking down a dirt road, Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa

Imagine basking in intimate, African luxury camps tucked away in pristine wilderness . Add to that bespoke safaris tailored to your wildlife dreams and you’ve stumbled upon Mala Mala Game Reserve.

One of the largest and oldest private Big Five game reserves in South Africa, Mala Mala offers a wildlife experience unlike any other. The reserve is famous for intimate wildlife encounters and photographic safaris .

Discover riverine forests, wooded thickets, savanna grasslands , and the thriving fauna that exist in this reserve. Leave behind the maddening crowds and self-drive safaris for one of the most exclusive experiences in southern Africa .

Here you’ll find a complete safari guide to the spectacular Mala Mala reserve and it’ll be difficult to stop dreaming about it.

Where is MalaMala?

Typical bush scenery at sunset, Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa

Mala Mala private game reserve stretches over 13 000 hectares of pristine, flourishing bushveld and diverse landscapes.

The reserve is in Mpumalanga province in South Africa and is one of eighteen reserves that make up the Greater Kruger National Park .

It benefits from being a private reserve with unfenced borders with Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve and Kruger Park . This allows wildlife to move through the expanse of all three reserves.

The powerful Sand River meanders through the reserve. And the diverse landscape supports thriving wildlife populations .

Getting to Mala Mala

Mala Mala reserve is an accessible reserve while still feeling remote and wild.

You can choose to drive from Johannesburg to the reserve. The journey is 436 km from OR Tambo International Airport and takes between 5 to 6 hours.

Alternatively, the nearest airport is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit which is 105 km from the reserve.

To begin your exclusive safari holiday in style you can choose to fly with Federal Airlines to the Mala Mala private airstrip. There are two flights per day with Federal Air from OR Tambo directly to MalaMala.

The Best Time to Visit Mala Mala Reserve

Lone bushbuck portrait, Mala Mala

As with all safari destinations in southern Africa, the best time to visit is during the dry season (May-September). With low rainfall and mild temperatures, wildlife viewings are more frequent at this time.

This is because the vegetation is thinner , making it easier to see animals. Additionally, wildlife gather at waterholes and move around in search of water. The temperatures are much more comfortable than in the summer months and the risk of malaria is lower.

However, birding opportunities are better in the summer months when migratory birds are moving through the reserve and rain transforms the dry landscape into a lush paradise.

Why You Should Visit Mala Mala, South Africa

MalaMala Game Reserve is one of the oldest safari destinations in South Africa . If you’re looking for an unrivalled safari experience with a dash of African luxury, there are few better places.

Here are just a couple of amazing reasons to put Mala Mala on the top of your safari bucket list.

A unique Mala Mala safari

Close encounter with African wild dogs at Mala Mala Game Reserve

There is undeniable magic in being a silent observer of the creatures of the bush. Whether witnessing a pack of wild dogs on the hunt as the sun rises, or spotting the vibrant colors of a lilac-breasted roller perched on a branch.

These sorts of experiences are most enjoyable without hordes of vehicles trying to push in for the best viewing spot. And the addition of an expert guide who will explain the spoor (animal track) on the ground, or the methods that dung beetles use to navigate.

A Mala Mala safari is entirely exclusive . Regardless of the camp that you stay in, you will have a private ranger for the duration of your stay and will only share the park with the other, minimal, Mala Mala guests. You can expect quiet sightings where your viewing vehicle will often be the only one.

Personalized tours are a specialty at Mala Mala and your ranger will encourage you to share your preferences. Are you on the ‘hunt’ for the Big Five, interested in spotting the elusive creatures of the night, or a keen twitcher? You’ll have a tailored safari experience.

The spectacular reserve also boasts one of the best destinations in southern Africa for photographic safaris . The exclusivity and location make for a fantastic photographic opportunity.

Combine these with specialized game vehicles , with features such as sliding camera mounts and under-seat lighting, and you’ve got a world-class experience. To top it all off, a ranger with keen photographic knowledge and experience will be there to guide you.

Fun for junior wildlife enthusiasts

The luxurious offerings of Mala Mala’s accommodation may not seem suitable for children. There are certain age policies and restrictions, such as children younger than six not permitted on open vehicles. However, the camps go above and beyond to provide an amazing experience for kids .

Rangers organize a host of activities that will introduce the wonders of the wild to your children.

From bush survival skills to learning how to track spoor markings and wildlife movie nights, there is no end to the entertainment.

It’s the perfect environment to inspire a love for the bushveld in young children.

This means that you will have the opportunity to spend quality time with your family while everyone enjoys their bespoke safari experience.

Unparalleled wildlife viewings

Cute lion family portrait in the South African bush

The reserve prides itself on unique, exciting, and up-close wildlife viewings . Over the years rangers have worked to acclimatize large mammals to the presence of viewing vehicles. So the presence of your game vehicle will not disrupt or disturb the activities of the animals, nor spook them too much.

Mala Mala is well-known for prolific sightings of leopards and the entire Big Five. If you’re after a safari that will satisfy an appetite for Big Five viewings, there are few places that rival Mala Mala Game Reserve.

But with diverse landscapes and a variety of habitats, there are hundreds of species to look out for.

There are almost 150 mammal species inhabiting the reserve. Try to spot some of these incredible animals on your Mala Mala safari:

 • Honey badger
 • Spotted hyena
 • Black-backed jackal
 • Blue wildebeest

For keen birders, you’ll delight in the 300+ bird species that call the reserve home, as well as the migratory species present from November to April.

Keep your eyes trained on the trees and sky for some of these special birds:

 • Saddle-billed stork
 • Gorgeous bushshrike
 • African green pigeon
 • Lesser-spotted eagle
 • Rufous-crowned roller
 • Stierling’s wren-warbler

Apart from mammals and birds, there are plenty of amphibian , reptile , and insect species that make up the thriving ecosystem at Mala Mala. Your private ranger will introduce to you the area’s inhabitants, from tiny insects to the giants on the plains .

Mala Mala Lodge Accommodation

Main camps at MalaMala Game Reserve - official website screenshot

Guests at Mala Mala Reserve have the option of three camps . These range from safari sleek to African opulence and luxury.

MalaMala Main Camp

This camp is an embodiment of understated elegance , with a stocked wine cellar and even a library.

MalaMala Sable Camp

For guests who are looking for an exclusive safari experience, this small and intimate camp will give you just that. The camp only sleeps 14 people in 7 suites . Families can choose the Lion’s Den Suite with two bedrooms and a living room.

The surrounding bush is beautiful and the private outdoor deck is the perfect place to admire the surroundings.

MalaMala Rattray’s Camp

Tick Off Mala Mala Safari From Your Bucket List

Lone giraffe in fading light, Mala Mala

For those looking to enjoy the luxurious comforts of an elegant yet ‘wild’ lodge coupled with a one-of-a-kind safari experience , Mala Mala Game Reserve is one of the best destinations. You’ll have the opportunity to dive deep into the wilderness with incredible animal encounters and expert guides .

This itinerary acts as a guide to give you an overview of what your safari will be like.

Day 1 : Arrive at the lodge, settle into your luxury tent, take in the views, and take a luxurious shower after your travels.

Lunch will be available between 1.30 - 3.30pm.

Meet your safari horse after lunch, and saddle up for your first ride out on the reserve! Take in the stunning scenery, and get up close and personal with some wildlife as you bond with your horse.

Dismount at a beautiful location in the reserve for sundowner drinks and snacks, and take in your first African sunset surrounded by the horses!

Day 5 :

If you have the time before your flight or further travel plans, tack up for the final time for a casual morning ride, or go out on one last game drive.

Otherwise, relax at the lodge, take a dip in the pool, or laze on the deck.

By now you will have well and truly bonded with your horse, and made lots of everlasting memories together.

It's time for a sad farewell.

Day 2 : An early rise today, with coffee and snacks at sunrise in your tent.

Mount up around 6am and set out for an early morning ride. At this time in the morning the wildlife in the reserve is very active, and you will have plenty of wonderful sightings of various different species. Have a few canters through the reserve to wake yourself up further! After a 2-3 hour ride, you will return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast.

Spend a few hours enjoying the lodge and its amenities; take a dip in the pool, relax on the deck, and fully unwind.

Meet up again at 4pm for your afternoon ride, this time heading deeper into the reserve where we hope to have a chance to see the elephants.

Tonight, the horses will sleep out in a boma on the reserve. We will have sundowners while the horses are being settled in for the night. Enjoy a delicious dinner and drinks at the lodge, before retiring for the night to dream about all that you saw today!

Day 3 :

You will be collected again from the lodge at 6am to be taken out to the horses at the boma.

This morning we will take a longer ride, up to a higher part of the reserve, where we will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch, and see some ancient bushman paintings, while the horses have a break on the highveld.

We will ride back, spotting wildlife as we go. Species you may see include zebra, giraffe, cheetahs, buffalo, as well as many species of antelope! You will be back at the lodge around 1pm for lunch.

After lunch we will ride the horses out to the Eastern part of the reserve to explore for an hour or two. The horses will sleep in an enclosure safe from lions and other predators. While the horses are being settled in for the night we will enjoy sundowners, then head back to the lodge for dinner.

Day 4 :

We will head out to the horses early in the morning, and go out for a ride for 2-3 hours. Canter across the open plains, scramble up hills to get the best views, and discover the fauna and flora of South Africa. Ride among herds of zebra and hartebeest, peer up at the elegant giraffes, and come up close to buffalo as they graze!

Dismount after an hour or two for a break, leg stretch and light bite to eat, before heading back to the lodge for lunch.

Go out on a game drive in the afternoon to spot lions and other predators, and hopefully get closer than you can on the horses. You will have plenty of opportunity on the drive to get some amazing photos to take home.

Enjoy dinner and drinks with your guides on your last evening at the reserve.

Verified review very good

The food was devine, the staff was excellent and friendly, accommodation comfortable. Just the noise levels were a bit unbearable at times and thin "walls" not helpful. I would nominate the waiter who served us on Saturday evening for an award, unfortunately, I do not remember his name.

Wildlife safari

Songimvelo game reserve, mpumalanga: game viewing from the saddle.

S S ongimvelo Game Reserve, tucked away in a little-known corner of South Africa’s Mpumalanga province, lies within the folds of the ancient Barberton Mountains. A pristine game park just waiting to be explored, it is known for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity and horseback safaris .

Songimvelo Game Reserve is also a geologist’s treasure trove, a bird watcher’s paradise and a n equestrian ’s dream.

This game reserve has been on the up-and-up since Mpumalanga Parks and Tourism unveiled it as the province ’ s largest reserve. One of Songimvelo’s unique selling points is that it offers a fairly new experience to wildlife lovers : game viewing from the saddle.

Unlike watching animals from a distance while sitting in your vehicle (without being able to approach too closely because engine noise disturbs the wildlife) , a horseback safari is an up - close - and - personal wildlife experience. From the vantage point of your mount, you are considered part of the landscape’s diversity, so you can roam among giraffes, zebras, buffalo, antelope and other South African wildlife with out alarming them .

Songimvelo Game Reserve recently introduced a herd of elephant from the Kruger National Park, along with a number of white rhino . Although there are no lions, the brown hyena, black-backed jackal and leopard ably represent the predators.

Geologically, Songimvelo is amazing. In places it is possible to see some of the earliest rocks to solidify on the earth’s crust 4 -b illion years ago. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years , and archaeological sites compris ing circular walls and ruins of small houses and religious structures date back to about 400BC.

The reserve’s landscape is characterised by mountains, valleys and flood plains. Much of this rough terrain can only be accessed on horseback. Only 5% of the reserve has 4x4 (SUV) road access; even the field rangers here patrol on horseback. On more challenging rides up into the mountains, not only will you enjoy superb game viewing, but you will be dumbstruck by the dramatic panoramic views.

More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the park, including the Shelley’s francolin, Knysna turaco, o live bush-shrike and g rey sunbird. If you ride in the forest margins , you may even see g reen twinspots , a local rarity .

More info about Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga is a tourist’s mecca; places of interest in this north-east province of South Africa are practically boundless and suit all tastes. The region is blessed with natural beauty, wildlife, mining history, battlefields, a sophisticated infrastructure and a blend of modern towns and remote tribal villages.

The capital of Mpumalanga is Mbombela, previously Nelspruit. It’s a vibrant city that links international visitors arriving from all parts of the world to the Kruger National Park . However, overlooking Mpumalanga’s other treasures would be remiss and we recommend setting aside at least a week to explore this striking part of the world.

Due to its diverse landscape, Mpumalanga has two climates: temperatures vary from icy winters and dry, hot summers in the upper plateau Highlands, to a sub-tropical, green environment in the low lying areas of the Lowveld. There is a marked elevation between the western and eastern regions of between 2200m and 180m respectively.

Things to do

South Africa’s most sought after destination is the Kruger National Park in the east of Mpumalanga . There are 3 entrances into the park and various tours ranging from bush walks to 4x4 safaris and hot air balloon rides over the park.

Follow the Panorama Route beginning at the forest town of Sabie and encompassing the impressive 65m high twin Mac Mac Falls , the mining town of Pilgrim 's Rest (a living museum), the panoramic God 's Window, the stunningly green 800m deep Blyde River Canyon , the uniquely formed cylindrical Bourke 's Luck Potholes and Pinnacle Rock , rising like a giant fist out of the surrounding tropical forest.

Tour the Sudwala Caves , believed to be the world’s oldest and dated at roughly 2000 million years old. The cave has fossilised remains of primitive life forms. The life-sized and realistic dinosaur models at Dinosaur Park alongside the caves is sure to enthrall both child and adult.

Hazyview has a number of heart racing activities including abseiling (rappelling), river tubing and a lengthy zip line over the forest canopy, reaching 100kph in some sections. The Elephant Sanctuary at the nearby Illanga Game Reserve allows interactive encounters with the park’s rescued and orphaned elephants.

Pop in to the Lydenburg Museum at Mashishing to see the Iron Age Lydenburg Heads , a series of clay masks discovered in 1957. Access to Mashishing (Lydenburg) is over one of South Africa’s highest passes, the Long Tom Pass .

Looking for an extreme adventure? Try the heart-in-your-mouth 68m freefall Big Swing and death-defying 135m High Wire outside Graskop.

Try your luck at gambling at the super sophisticated Emnotweni Casino and Entertainment Complex in Mbombela.

Spoil yourself with a visit to Tsakani House of African Silks in Mbombela where exquisite organic, hand-woven silk products are created.

Visit Rottcher Orange Wines at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre in White River for a wine tasting with a difference: here, wines are made the traditional way but the grape is substituted with oranges.

The town of Barberton has an old mine, ancient rock formations and fascinating history to discover. NASA Scientists have in the past visited Barberton to study the 3.5 billion year old rocks to chart earth’s history.

The quaint little town of Dullstroom is a favourite weekend getaway for Johannesburg and Pretoria residents. Trout fly fishing is popular.

A visit to a South Ndebele kraal is recommended to see the brightly coloured homes and traditional dress that so vividly portray the tribe’s cultural identity.

Where to Eat

The fairly rustic venue of Canimambo Restaurant in Graskop belies the excellent traditional Portuguese dishes served here. The menu has various other options including snack foods.

No stop to Graskop is complete without an obligatory visit to one of their renowned pancake houses. Harries Pancakes is recommended where savoury and sweet pancakes are served .

Potluck Boskombuis invites travelers along the Graskop road to stop for a meat dish on their deck overlooking a river. The potjiekos (meat and veggies stewed in a cast iron pot over an open fire) is worth a mention. Look out for the wild horses roaming the area.

Oliver 's Restaurant & Lodge in White River offers exciting dishes ranging from Mediterranean to vegetarian meals.

Kuka 's Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge in Hazyview has a relaxed patio area and the menu is a combination of excellent Italian dishes and standard fare, well presented.

Explorers Restaurant at the Emnotweni Casino in Mbombela offers light meals in a modern, well-designed restaurant. The Jackpot Platter is popular for its mix of ribs, chicken wings, spring rolls and dipping sauces.

Orange Restaurant in Mbombela provides exceptional meals in a sophisticated venue overlooking the city. Fine dining at its best, booking is essential.

Sabie’s Wild Fig tree Restaurant is best known for its outstanding unique dishes. Try the crocodile sosatie (kebab)! Nice vibe to the restaurant.

The award-winning Zest Restaurant in Mbombela is a lively venue where top quality meals are prepared throughout the day.

Mpumalanga is celebrated for its fruit and nuts; purchase macadamia nuts, mangoes, pineapples and litchis from any roadside stall to assemble a healthy snack pack for your road trip.

Mpumalanga means The Place of the Rising Sun in siSwati.

In 1900, during the South African war, a fortune in gold bars went missing from the SA Mint. It’s believed that the gold was buried on a farm somewhere between Sabie and Watervalboven in Mpumalanga. The legend persists today and there are people still trying to locate the ‘Kruger Millions’.

A little bit about Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Spanning 65,000 hectares, the Sabi Sands Nature Reserve is a testament to the vision of local landowners in the 1950s. It stands proudly adjacent to the globally acclaimed Kruger National Park, forming a vast wilderness teeming with wildlife.

The legacy of these founding families, now in their third and fourth generations of stewardship, resonates in the successful conservation of South Africa's richest density of big game. A unique feature of Sabi Sands is its 50-kilometer unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, creating a harmonious coexistence that allows wildlife to roam freely. This has led to remarkably close encounters with the local fauna, including prolific sightings of the elusive leopard. The dynamic landscape is further enriched by the Sabi and Sand Rivers, weaving their way through the reserve, enhancing the rich biodiversity of this extraordinary habitat.

Foxy Crocodile Bush Retreat & Kruger Safari's

9.6 Exceptional 221 reviews

The lodge was fantastic and such was the hosts who really took care of us. The lodges are all self sufficient and ecological. The design is fabulous. They also offer delicious meals and safari tours that leave from the lodge. What a wonderful time we spent there!

Buffelshoek Tented Camp

Lodge in manyeleti game reserve.

9.3 Superb 459 reviews

Great lodge in the middle of Manyeleti game reserve. Not a luxury accomodation, but very cozy and it has everything you need. The camp has no fences, so wild animals might stroll around, which makes it extra special. Our guide for the game drives was amazing and funny. We saw 4 of the Big 5 even though the weather was quite bad. The jeep has no roof, which is an advantage compared to other lodges, when it comes to game sighting and safari feeling. The food was delicious too. To sum it up, great camp!

 • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
 • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
 • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I didn't book a tour package, instead opting to stay at affordable lodging and book safari day trips to the park.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

My main tent felt pretty spacious, with a king bed and a living-room area.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.

The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.

Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.

The bathroom was standard, with a tub, shower, and toilet.

I signed up for a couple of day safaris and did one at night.

Although I had a rental car and could've done a self-drive safari around Kruger, I didn't trust myself to spot animals while focusing on the roads.

Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.

My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.

For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.

My tent was quite spacious. The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

There's a main lodge with a communal living room, dining area, and bar.

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

We also passed a small pool next to the main lodge.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

On the mornings with an early safari, we had a simple breakfast next to our Land Cruiser.

Safari breakfasts consisted of hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, doughnuts, bacon and sausage, fruits, and orange juice. Staff also made French-press coffee, which we could spike with cream liqueur.

Our Land Cruiser had a cooler of beers and sodas in the back, too.

At the private game reserve, we got pretty close to wildlife.

Taasa is located inside a private game reserve, which means staff can pretty much drive anywhere within it. This was a huge leg up from my day trips in Kruger National Park on my last safari.

Inside national parks like Kruger or Serengeti, you're only allowed to drive on designated roads for safety reasons (both for the tourists and the animals).

But in a private reserve, guides can drive offroad. Plus, the guides communicate with each other when they find something special.

We saw a bunch of animals in the private reserve and Serengeti.

We also left the reserve to spend a couple of days going into Serengeti National Park, as there were things you could only find there instead of within the private reserve.

For example, I'd planned my trip to take place during the Great Migration, and I wanted to see wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

We also went to Serengeti to find rhinoceros and hippopotamus.

Every dinner at the resort consisted of three courses: soup, an entrée, and a dessert.

The main course was usually some type of Western food, and there was always a vegetarian option.

It would've been nice to be offered more typical Tanzanian dishes, though. For me, part of the fun of traveling is learning about different countries' cuisines.

I also had access to an open bar in the main lodge. Staff could make simple cocktails, and there was lots of beer and wine. The drinks were all included with the price of the stay (except for fancy Champagnes and select wines).

One morning, we had a special breakfast on the plains.

On one day of the trip, we had a special bush breakfast. It was one of the extra activities we got with that special add-on package.

Instead of our usual safari breakfast, we had freshly prepared omelets in the wild.

We also got another special treat in the bush that morning — a toilet!

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. On my budget safari day trips at Kruger, we'd have to wait until we reached a rest-stop facility.

Again, we spent a lot of time watching lions.

After breakfast, we were back in safari mode.

We found a family of lions, and as we were in the private reserve, we were able to stay and watch the cubs play for quite a while.

At Kruger, when lions are spotted, traffic starts backing up on the road as all the safari cruisers stop to look, so you can't stay too long.

Here, we knew no one else would be coming.

Our trip ended with a great happy hour and outdoor dinner.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve.

In my opinion, the difference between these two safari trips that's the most worth paying for is being in a private reserve.

After all, the main reason I fly to Africa is for the safari, not the glamping.
