Botswana is a stunning country but can be tricky to pack for especially when you are going out on safari. In this section of our what to wear guide we will tell you the main things that you need to consider when putting together your safari wardrobe.

Things you should consider when packing for Botswana are:

Weather in Botswana

As with any packing list the weather is one of the biggest considerations.

Unlike Northern Hemisphere countries, Botswana really only has two seasons. Rather than summer, winter, fall and spring Botswana weather is classified as either wet season or dry season.

The dry season in Botswana from April through to November and the wet season in Botswana runs from November to March / April time. Depending on if you are visiting during rainy season you will need to amend your Botswana packing list to include waterproof wear.

Often activities you do in Botswana will be timed to avoid the midday sun when the animal movements are limited and to get you out of the heat of the sun. Therefore it is important to pack layers to account for this activity.

Where in Botswana you travel

There are som many amazing places in Botswana to go on safari including but not limited to:

• Central Kalahari
• Chobe National Park
• Makgadikgadi Pans
• Maun and of course
• the Okavango Delta.

While there are mild fluctuations in weather in these places and while the central kalahari and souther regions can be a tad drier it isn’t huge differences and therefore this packing list should be treated as universal for Botswana.

Wildlife in Botswana

Let’s face it people go on safari to see animals. And Botswana has some very special wildilfe experiences.

You will need to have clothes that will suit early mornings and early evenings when you have the best chance of seeing animals so some layers will be required.

Types of Safari in Botswana

Walking safaris are very popular in Botswana on top of jeep safaris. If you plan to do a walking safari you will need good and sturdy hiking boots to protect your feet from thorns and other hazards.

Best Color to wear on a Safari in Botswana

Now when we are usually putting together a capsule wardrobe one of the biggest decisions you have to pack is what color palette you want for your wardrobe. However this is not a problem when putting together you Botswana safari capsule wardrobe as there are definitely  best and worst colors to wear on safari .

While we would normally separate the what to wear guide into what to wear for men and women really there are fundamental principles for a safari wardrobe regardless of gender.

Long Sleeve Tops

We recommend having a mix of long sleeve tops that both pull over and button down in both shirts and blouses style.

I would mix a variety of the above color palette into your wardrobe so there is a bit of variety in your wardrobe.

Zippable hiking trousers

One thing we knew found on safari especially if you are traveling during wet season is that you legs get muddy and there are limited laundry facilities.

For this reason we recommend packing zippable hiking trousers. I would recommend taking at least two pairs of these trousers with you to give you time to dry a pair if they get rained on or need washing.

Also don’t underestimate how dusty you can get on a walking safari in Botswana.

Hiking Socks 

There is nothing worse than getting a blister while out on a hike especially when you are on safari. Therefore be sure to pack plenty of thick or cushioned hiking socks and make sure you have worn in your boots before you arrive for your safari.

Light Weight Fleece

A light weight fleece that sticks to the above color palette is perfect for early starts on safari or for evenings in the lodge. And the bonus is this warm layer will not cost you much in luggage weight.

We recommend taking this no matter the month you are traveling in as you will be out a lot when the sun is down in early mornings and early evening. That is because the animals are more active then and I really can’t stress how much the temperature drops at this time.

If you feel the cold you may also want a lightweight jacket. It is usually cooler in the dry season over the wet as there isn’t the humidity.

Waterproof Poncho

This won’t be needed in the dry season but is an essential for those traveling to Botswana during the wet season it is an absolute essential.

We recommend a poncho over a jacket as they are compact and lightweight and you really wont want to be wearing them for long after the rain as it is still quite warm and humid in Botswana.

You can also use this to protect any backpack and camera equipment from the rain also.

Wide Brimmed Hat

It is very important to protect yourself from the elements when on safari. One of the best ways of doing this is by wearing a wide brimmed safari hat that will protect you from both the sun and rain if it happens.

Sunglasses are needed whatever time you travel to Botswana as the sun is strong and need protecting.

Gaiters (optional)

Gaiters definitely aren’t a essential but we recommend taking them if you are going safari during the wet seson.

Gaiters are good for protecting your trousers in muddy or rainy conditions and will help keep your trousers a bit cleaner but will also add an added layer of protection from things like thorns and nettles.

Long length PJs

Mosquitos are most active at night. Be sure to protect yourself from mosquitos by having length length (in both arms and legs) pyjamas as this will help prevent you being bitten. 

You will find most Safari lodges in Botswana, particularly the luxury ones will have pools. In my opinion there is nothing more refreshing than a post safari dip in the pool. Don’t miss out by forgetting your swimwear.

Goes without saying

Can be used to dress up outfits in the evening and are a good additional layer.

Dress / Leggings and Top

We recommend taking a Maxi dress with long sleeves, for evenings in Botswana. It is nice to be able to change out of your safari clothes in the evenings into something fresh. But as many lodges aren’t formal you can opt for a dress or top and leggings.

Just be sure to keep yourself covered to prevent the chances of you getting bitten by a mosquito.

Hiking Boots

In my opinion there is only one essential pair of shoes to take on a safari in Botswana and that is hiking boots. This is especially true for those planning on doing a walking safari which are very popular in Botswana.

Lodges don’t tend to be very formal places (unless stated on their website) so you won’t need heels or evening wear with you but hiking boots are needed for out on the savannah.

If you aren’t doing any walking safari or treks however you might be able to get away with walking shoes or hiking trainers instead.

If you are traveling during wet season we would recmomend taking waterproof hiking boots with you as there is nothing worse than wet feet on a safari.

We recommend taking malaria tablets with you on safari in Botswana. Be sure to pack the right amount for your trip along with any other medications you need.

• Documentation

Many places in Africa including Botswana will require 6 months of validity left on your passport. Be sure to check the validity on your passports before you travel.

Camera and Lens

Trust me when I say that you will want to take many many photographs when on a safari in Botswana. Be sure to have a good camera and if you require them additional lens.

Extra Batteries

You will go through lots of battery on a Safari be that in Tanzania , Botswana or sometwhere else. Be sure to bring extra power packs and batteries to get you through charging periods.

Chargers and Adaptors

Be sure to have all the chargers for all your electronic devices with you and be sure to have a plug adaptor, depending on where you are traveling from and to will depend on what type you will need.

Insect Repellant

Though many reputable companies and lodges will have first aid kits as standards I always recommend carrying your own travel first aid kit with you just in case. We recommend taking one whereever you are traveling but think it is especially important when you are doing a safari.

The sun can be strong in Botswana and therefore you need to pack plenty of suncream.

Hand Sanitizer

This is very important when out on safaris in Botswana on long days so you can clean your hands before eating.

We recommend taking your own travel size toiletries with you as wells tooth paste and tooth brushes etc as when out in the bush these are hard to come by.

Waterproof Bag

We always recommend taking a backpack that is waterproof with you to protect your belongings should you get caught in a rainstorm in Botswana but this is particularly important for those traveling in the rainy season.

Depending on your lodge and activities you may be getting up very early in a place with no electricity. For moving around your resort site or on early morning treks a headlamp can be very useful.

What can you not wear on safari in botswana.

While there is no dress code for a Botswana Safari, although we recommend staying covered to avoid getting bitten by mosquitos we also recommend not wearing bright colors to attract attention, white as it gets very dirty or blue and black as it can encourage insects such as mosquitos and tseste flies.

Camouflage should also be left at home wherever you are in Africa as this is something reserved for the military.

Also we recommend leaving the perfume at home particularly flowery perfume as this can attract insects too.

Is it OK to wear shorts in Botswana?

There are no rules to say you can’t wear shorts in Botswana however we do not recommend them.

Shorts keep your legs bare which increases the chances of getting a mosquito bite which is something you want to avoid at all costs.

It surely does get cold at night and early in the morning, especially during the dry season. The temperatures can drop below 50ºF (10ºC) in the Kalahari area.

You need a passport, but Botswana doesn’t require a visa for citizens from certain countries. Check the official website to see what the current requirement for your country is.

Maun is generally a safe place, and violent crime is rare. However, you still need to be vigilant and protect yourself from petty theft and avoid walking alone in the dark.

What To Wear On Safari: My Detailed Safari Packing List With Photos

You’ve all seen the brochure photos: a smiling family is sitting at a camping table in the middle of the African bush. Behind them, the sun is setting, and perhaps a giraffe is crossing the savanna landscape.

What are they wearing? I’m sure you can picture it: lightweight designer safari gear, all matching, in indistinguishable shades of beige, taupe and camel. Maybe the dad is wearing khaki chinos and the mum has a floppy-brimmed hat (colour: putty) on her head. They all have sand-coloured lace-up boots on, and from head to toe all their clothes are pristine, clean, and crease-free.

If it’s your first time figuring out what to wear on safari, it might feel like this is the model you have to follow. Like, having booked the blindingly expensive trip of a lifetime, you now have to go out and splurge hundreds more on the ‘proper’ kit, otherwise people will laugh at you and you may even get into trouble for not doing it right.

Well I’m here to reassure you: that’s rubbish.

What should you wear on safari?

I’ve been on five safaris (to Kenya , Botswana , Tanzania , Uganda and South Africa) and I still don’t own any ‘official’ safari clothes. I’ve always worn stuff I already own and been just fine.

That said, there are some dos and don’ts about packing for a safari, some things it’s a good idea to make sure you bring with you, and some stuff you should definitely leave at home.

So welcome to my complete safari packing guide. I’m going to go through a few points and FAQs, and then make a handy list at the end. Scroll down if you just want to skip ahead to that.

What happens on a safari?

Days on safari follow a similar schedule. You wake early and head out shortly after sunrise for a morning activity – usually a game drive but sometimes a boat cruise, guided walk, or scenic flight.

You return to the camp mid-morning for brunch and have some hours to relax in the heat of the day before heading out again for another activity later in the afternoon. Your afternoon game drive or boat cruise normally ends with sunset drinks in a beautiful location, before you head back to the camp for dinner.

After dinner you might sit round the campfire or boma enjoying a few drinks with your fellow guests, but most people go to bed fairly early, ready for another dawn start the next day.

What to wear on safari during the day

The most important thing to note is that a safari is not a fashion show. It can be hot and dusty, or rainy and muddy, so it’s important to dress for comfort and practicality, so leave the designer gear, luxury fabrics and bling jewellery at home. Instead, bring stuff that washes easily, dries quickly and hides the dirt well!

You’ll also be coating yourself daily in suncream and insect repellent, so don’t bring anything that won’t mix well with those!

When I was in Botswana in December, some days reached 40 degrees C (104 F) with high humidity, so think lightweight breathable fabrics like cotton, viscose or sweat-wicking sportswear, or even linen if you don’t mind the creases).

T-shirts and shorts are your friends, but I’d avoid strappy vests for two reasons:

• Many African countries are quite conservative, and it doesn’t do to flash a lot of skin.
• The sun is extremely strong and the more skin you show, the more of you there is to get burned, even in a shaded safari car.

What to wear on a game drive or boat cruise

On wildlife viewing trips you’ll be sitting in a car for several hours, so it’s important to be comfortable. T-shirts and shorts are a great option.

Early mornings in Africa can be chilly, so bring a long-sleeved shirt, light sweater or jacket just in case.

Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Safari cars have roofs, but sometimes the roof rolls back so you can stand up, and when the sun is low in the sky it can shine in from the side very strongly. I was surprised by how much I ended up needing my hat.

Since you won’t be walking around much, light sneakers or sandals are fine.  

Safari cars are open-sided, so if it rains you may get a bit wet. Most safari companies carry ponchos in the car, to hand out to guests when it rains, but you might want to bring your own light waterproof raincoat just in case.

What to wear on a walking safari

For a walking safari the principles are the same, but you should wear long trousers to prevent your legs being cut or scratched by branches, and closed-toed shoes to protect you from biting or stinging animals or insects.

Although walking safaris can sometimes last for three or four hours, you don’t actually walk that far because there’s a lot of stopping and looking at stuff. So you don’t need hiking boots; comfortable trainers or walking shoes are fine. If you’re travelling in rainy season you might want to bring waterproof or Gore-Tex ones.

Do I need warm clothes on safari?

We think of Africa as being hot, and it is, but it can also be extremely cold. If you travel during the northern hemisphere summer, that’s winter in most of Africa, and temperatures can drop below freezing especially in desert areas, if you’re at altitude, and the further south you go.

In Botswana and South Africa during the winter, average nighttime temperatures can be 0 or even -2 degrees C (28-32 F), and remember that most safari cabins and tents are not heated!

Even in Kenya, which is much closer to the equator and therefore not as cold, nights and early mornings can definitely be chilly.

Staff in camps will provide you with hot water bottles and blankets both in your tent and on game drives, but you still need to bring warm clothes with you as well.

If you’re travelling to the southern African countries between April and October, I’d recommend bringing at least one pair of long trousers, one long-sleeved top, one jumper, and a packable down jacket.

But remember to dress in layers, as the day quickly warms once the sun’s up, and even if it’s close to freezing during the night, afternoon temperatures can ramp up to high 20s (70+ F) or more.

It’s very important to check the weather forecast before you travel, as different regions’ climates can vary.

What colour should you wear on safari?

It’s recommended that you wear plain designs in neutral, earthy or natural colours, such as shades of beige, grey, brown or natural greens.

Avoid vibrant, bright colours like orange, red and yellow, or vivid patterns. This is for two reasons:

• It helps to make you less noticeable to animals.
• You can get pretty dusty on safari, and natural shades don’t show the dirt so much!

Bright white and full black are also not recommended. This is not only because they show the dust really badly, but because many animals actually only see in black and white, and large gleaming white shapes or dark black ones are very noticeable to them.

With that all said, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, and you certainly don’t need to rush out and buy an entire new wardrobe full of khaki and beige. As I just mentioned, many animals only see in black and white, and when you’re inside the car, most only see the car as one large object, and not the people inside.

It’s more important to stick to the rules when you’re on a walking safari and don’t have the protection of the car.

But in general, if you pack plain, neutral-ish colours, you’ll be fine.

Why not wear blue on safari?

Some people recommend not wearing blue on safari. Apart from being a pretty noticeable bright colour, it’s said to attract tsetse flies, which are prevalent in some areas of southern Africa and can deliver a nasty bite and spread disease. They are also thought to prefer black (another reason not to wear it).

That said, my light down jacket is bright blue, and I also took a blue t-shirt and a pale blue cardigan to Kenya, and I wore all three with no problems.

What to wear on safari evenings

Most people like to dress up when they go on holiday, so you might think about throwing a few glamorous dresses, high heels or some party shirts into your suitcase.

But you probably won’t wear them. Even in the luxury camps, most people really don’t dress up for dinner, for four main reasons:

• At night it’s a good idea to cover your arms and legs to avoid insect bites, so floaty skirts and strappy tops are a bad idea.
• It can get quite chilly at night, so you’ll probably be more comfortable in trousers and a fleece anyway.
• You’ll be tired after a long day and an early start; you’ll probably find you can’t be bothered to dress for dinner as you’ll be going to bed soon afterwards anyway.
• Walking round camp after dark you may run into snakes or spiders, and paths can be muddy and uneven, so high-heels are a definite no-no.

When I was in Botswana in December (the height of their summer) it was still 30+ degrees (86 F) in the evening, so I wore lightweight trousers or a long casual dress and then liberally coated myself with insect repellent. In Kenya in September it was a bit cooler, around low 20s (70 F), so I wore trousers, a t-shirt and a light cardigan, and had my jacket handy for later in the evening as the temperature dropped.

Is it OK to wear jeans on safari?

It’s perfectly fine to bring a pair of jeans for the cooler evenings, especially if you’re travelling in winter when you know it will be chilly at night.

However jeans aren’t recommended for game drives as you’ll probably be too hot in them during the day, and if you need to wash them they’ll take ages to dry.

As a general rule I wouldn’t take jeans on safari but instead bring lightweight trousers. The convertible zip-off ones that turn into shorts are especially good as you can have long pants for cold mornings and safari walks, and convert them into shorts once the day’s warmed up.

Pro tip: Whatever you choose to bring, make sure you have some ‘room to grow’! The food on safari is usually really good and you won’t be doing much exercise, so stretchy waistbands are a good idea!

Can you wear leggings on safari?

Yes, absolutely. Leggings are a great thing to bring on safari because they’re lightweight, wash and dry easily, are comfortable, and protect you from bugs and the sun. Just stick to neutral colours and leave the snazzy activewear designs at home!

I always pack a pair of leggings for safari – and if there’s a gym in the hotel then I can also use them for a workout!

What are the best shoes to wear on safari?

As I mentioned above, high heels and smart shoes are definitely not the thing to bring on safari. For game drives it’s fine to wear sandals or light sneakers, and for safari walks you want closed-toed comfortable walking shoes.  You definitely don’t need to buy special safari boots, no matter what the sales people might say.

If your lodge or hotel has a pool, you might want to bring some flipflops (also handy to have for walking around in your tent at night, or for nipping to the bathroom block if you’re staying in a campsite).

Can you wear trainers on safari?

Yes, absolutely. I always pack a pair of Asics Gore-Tex trail trainers that I wear for exercise, when it’s muddy or raining, and for walking or hiking. On game drives and boat cruises, and for walking around the camp in the evening, I have a pair of Skechers Go-Walk sneakers that are super comfortable and easy to slip on and off.

What to pack for the beach in Kenya or Tanzania

Many people like to combine their safari with a few days on the beach, perhaps in Zanzibar in Tanzania, or at Diani or Vipingo in Kenya .

Here’s where you will get the chance to dress up a bit – as if you’re staying in a nice hotel or beach resort destination, there will definitely be opportunities to put on a strappy dress, holiday shirt, or some sparkly sandals.

If you’re planning to hit the beach for a few days at the end of your trip, you’ll definitely want to throw in one or two nice evening outfits. And don’t forget swimwear and a beach cover-up too!

Can you wash clothes on safari?

This is a very important question, and the answer is yes! Almost all safari lodges and camps offer a laundry service and most of the time it’s included in the price of your stay. So you can wash your clothes as often as you like at no extra cost – which means you really don’t need to bring huge amounts of luggage as you can wash and re-wear your clothes several times.

Note that in many places the laundry is done by hand by the hotel staff, dried out in the sun, and ironed using an old-fashioned coal iron. This is yet another reason not to bring anything too delicate or precious, as there’s a small chance it may get damaged during the laundry process.

What sort of underwear should I bring for safari?

Ladies: remember that you may spend many hours bouncing around over unsealed and bumpy roads in the back of a safari car. Being quite an athletic build, this is not something that’s ever bothered me, but I’ve been reliably informed by more curvy girls that a sports bra can be a life-saver in this situation. So if you’re particularly susceptible to bouncing, bring sports bras!

It’s also important to note that the people who handwash your clothes are usually male, and for cultural and hygiene reasons they won’t wash women’s underwear. Ladies will need to bring a small amount of hand wash (though sometimes laundry soap is provided) and wash your own pants and bras in the basin. For this reason it’s a good idea not to bring anything too fancy or delicate: lightweight, quick-drying microfibre underwear is best.

Other things to pack for safari

Of course, packing is not all about clothes. Here are a few other things you won’t want to forget (more in the complete packing list below):

Camera, spare batteries, chargers, plug adapters

Can you imagine going all that way on safari on the trip of a lifetime and then forgetting your phone charger or camera? I know, I’d die!

So definitely make sure you pack all your gadgets, and all the cables and plugs you’ll need to make them work! And then bring spares!

Often hotel rooms and safari tents only have a limited number of plug sockets, so if you have loads of gadgets, it’s a good idea to bring a multi-socket splitter. I recommend one with surge protection : power cuts can happen frequently and if there’s a surge when the power comes back, your devices can get fried. This happened to me the night before my Tanzania safari , so now I’m extra careful!

Medication and toiletries

Most of the places you’ll be staying will be out in the bush, with limited access to shops. Make sure you bring all the toiletries, medicines and personal items you’ll need, as once you leave the airport, opportunities to replace anything that’s missing will be very limited.

Do you need malaria tablets for safari?

Large parts of Africa have malaria, including popular safari countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, so it’s very likely that you may need to take malaria tables on safari. I usually take doxycycline which is cheaper than malarone, but may not be suitable for everyone so speak to your pharmacist or travel clinic.

Some countries also require you to have a proof of yellow fever vaccination – you can check if this is needed on the website above as well. For example, places like Kenya and Tanzania won’t let you in without proof of vaccination if you’ve spent time in a yellow-fever-risk country before arriving. If you have already had your yellow fever jab, make sure you pack the certificate!

What to wear for safari in Tanzania

Best suitcase for safari

This is important, so pay attention! Many safaris involve internal transfers by tiny plane or even helicopter. They all have pretty strict packing rules, with a maximum of 15 kg weight per person and no hard-shelled suitcases allowed. Luggage must be soft sided, and don’t overpack! You shouldn’t need to anyway, since you can wash everything when you’re there.

Wheels are OK as long as it’s a soft bag, so I recommend a soft holdall with or without wheels, or a wheely backpack like the one I have and love . This one came to Kenya and Botswana with me with no trouble at all.

Packing for safari for photographers

If, like me, you’re travelling with 15 kg of camera gear , don’t stress. The little internal plane operators are used to photographers and will let you put your backpack of gear at the back of the plane. I travelled with 15 kg of hold luggage and another 15 kg of camera gear around Botswana and Kenya, and it was never an issue.

What should you NOT take on safari?

Now I’ve told you all the things you should bring on safari, here are a few things it’s a good idea to leave at home.

Perfume: No one in your safari car will thank you for dosing yourself liberally with Eau de Whatever, and if you wear a very strong scent it may even allow animals to detect you sooner and run away faster.

Hairdryer: Many safari camps run on solar power and cannot support a hairdryer. Those that can (if they’re on the grid, or running off a generator), will usually provide one that’s suited to the electricity supply. As I said, no one really worries too much about their appearance or cares about what your hair looks like on safari anyway.

Camouflage clothing: This might surprise you, but wearing military-style camo print clothing is a no-no in many African countries, where it’s associated with the military. It’s actually illegal to wear camo gear in Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Plastic bags: Disposable plastic bags are banned in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. You should be fine with the little zip-lock one for your liquids on the plane, and I’ve used reusable plastic packing bags many times with no problems, but try to keep plastic bags to a minimum or you may get a fine.

A drone: Unless you have special permission, drones are not allowed in most lodges and African National Parks.

Expensive watches, jewellery, and other valuable items: This doesn’t just apply to African safaris but to all travel. Jewellery can easily get lost, damaged or stolen, so if you care about it, leave it at home.

A hard-shelled suitcase: As mentioned above, all safari companies ask you to bring a soft bag or at most a wheeled soft holdall , as these are much easier to pack into the small luggage spaces on planes and in cars. You will not be thanked if you bring rigid-sided luggage.

Where to buy safari clothing

For the most part, you don’t need any specialist clothing for safari. You can wear your own normal clothes. However, there are some great companies that do excellent clothes for travel, in suitable colours, and made from practical fabrics that are sweat-wicking, comfortable and don’t crease.

My favourite brands for travel clothes are The North Face , Patagonia , Rab , Mountain Equipment , Arc’teryx and Craghoppers , and my favourite places to shop in the UK are Ellis Brigham and Cotswold Outdoor , which stock all these brands at competitive prices, have high-street stores where you can get advice and try stuff on, and often have good end-of-season sales too.

What to wear on safari: my Africa packing list

So now we’ve gone through the details, here’s what I would pack for a 10-day or two-week safari in Africa.

What to wear on safari: Clothes

• T-shirts in neutral or earthy colours x 5. The green t-shirt in the photo above is by Mountain Equipment . I love it so much I bought three!
• Long trousers x 1 pair. I really like my lightweight ones from The North Face .
• Shorts x 1 pair.
• Convertible trousers that zip-off into shorts, or a second pair of shorts . North Face and Craghoppers both do good convertible trousers for men and women .
• Leggings . I’m a big fan of Sweaty Betty.
• Long-sleeved shirt for covering up in bright sunshine.
• Lightweight jumper or cardigan for chilly evenings.
• Lightweight jacket , fleece or mid layer for cold nights. I have a fleece from Arc’teryx and a mine is a Nano puff from  Patagonia .
• Waterproof jacket . I have two, a lovely Zeta LT by  Arc’teryx  and a packable Meridien jacket by  Rab .
• Dress or smart shirt for the evening if you’re going to a city or the beach (x2). For packable jersey or lightweight viscose dresses I love Boden , Sugarhill Brighton and Joanie Clothing .
• Gym kit – if you think you’ll need or use it. But many safari camps don’t have fitness equipment and you can’t go for a run in the bush or you might get chased by a predator!
• Sports bras or comfortable wireless bralettes x 3.
• Underwear x 7. If you’re staying for longer you’ll need to handwash. I recommend something quick-drying and non-delicate like these microfibre ones from M&S .
• Swimwear . I get cute bikinis and swimwear from M&S , Next , or Pour Moi .
• Sarong or cover up (if you’re spending time on the beach)
• Sandals or flip flops . I love my walking sandals by Teva .
• Trainers or walking shoes for exercise and walking safaris. Mine are Gore-Tex trail trainers from Asics .
• Soft sneakers for walking round the camp, game drives and boat cruises. I’m a big fan of Skechers Go Walks .

Pro tip: if you’re going to the beach and plan to do a lot of snorkelling, pack a rash vest or t-shirt to swim in. The sun is super strong and we all got very burnt even though we were wearing Factor 50!

What to pack for safari in winter

If the forecast is for cold weather, I would add:

• Another long-sleeved top or baselayer .
• A warmer, packable insulated jacket .
• A pair of jeans.
• Beanie hat.

What to pack for safari: Accessories

• Baseball cap or hat. My cap is this one this one by Buff and I really like it.
• Scarf or buff to keep dust off (and you can dip it in water to cool you down on very hot days)
• Headphones or ear buds (for the plane), you won’t need them on the actual safari! I have these ones which are pretty good and much cheaper than Apple ones.
• Eye mask and ear plugs (if you’re a light sleeper).
• Camera, batteries, memory cards and charger
• Charger cables for all your devices
• Portable phone charger. Mine is this one from Anker .
• Plug adapter for the country you’re going to, or a universal plug adapter
• Plug splitter or 3-way adapter with surge protection
• Refillable water bottle (though some safari companies provide them, so check). An insulated water bottle will keep your water colder for longer on hot days.
• A padlock for your luggage to protect you from airport thieves

Safari packing list: Toiletries

As well as all your usual toiletries and medications, don’t forget:

• Suncream. I swear by  Riemann P20  because it’s hard wearing and you only need to apply it once a day. Or for the best face SPF you will ever find, that’s non-greasy and non-orange (!), I love  this one from the Body Shop .
• Insect repellant (though this is often provided in camp).
• Malaria tablets ( check to see if these are required in your destination )

Pro tip: Luggage goes missing more and more frequently these days, so pack your medication or anything else vital in your hand luggage.

What is the weather like?

Botswana has hot, wet summers from October to April while winters from May to September are often dry and cool with chilly evenings.

The rainy season is from late December to late February, sometimes continuing into March, with rain generally in the form of afternoon thundershowers; average rainfall is approximately 500mm / 20”.

Summer: Average of 18°C to 32°C / 64°F to 90°F, although temperatures can rise over 40°C / 104°F

Winter: 8°C to 21°C / 46°F to 70°F

What to pack:

As a general guide, comfortable and casual clothing that you can wash and wear is recommended while on safari. Muted colours are best for game viewing. Game drives are generally conducted in the early morning and the late afternoon, which can be cold, especially in winter. The temperature often warms up during the day, so it is best to dress in layers.

The most practical items to pack for your Botswana safari are:

• Clothes in khaki, green, beige and neutral colours
• Long-sleeved shirts that offer protection from the sun and mosquitoes
• Shorts or a light skirt
• Jeans or safari trousers for evenings and cooler days
• Jackets and sweaters for early morning and late afternoon game drives
• A lightweight waterproof jacket in case of rain
• Swim and beachwear
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, moisturiser and lip salve
• Binoculars and camera equipment

The luggage allowance on small flights is usually limited to a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs), which includes hand luggage, so please bear this in mind when packing.

Was soll ich auf meiner Safari anziehen?

Diese Frage erreicht uns regelmäßig, weshalb wir ihr heute einen speziellen Blog-Artikel widmen möchten. Zunächst ist es wichtig zu verstehen, dass es so etwas wie das perfekte Safari-Outfit nicht gibt und Sie sich im Vorfeld nicht unnötig Gedanken über den Dresscode machen müssen. Trotzdem möchten wir Ihnen einige Empfehlungen aussprechen und teilen, was sich in unserer eigenen Erfahrung bewährt hat. Alles kann, nichts muss.

Beginnen wir von Kopf bis Fuß:

Kopfbedeckung:

• Ein Hut mit breiter Krempe, ideal für geplante Buschmärsche
• Eine Wollmütze für die kalten Morgenstunden auf dem Safari-Fahrzeug
• Sonnenbrille
• Ein leichter Schal oder „Buff“

Oberkörper:

• Eine Fleece-Jacke für die frühen Morgenstunden und nach Sonnenuntergang
• Ein leichtes, atmungsaktives T-Shirt oder Hemd (vorzugsweise in Khaki, wenn ein Buschmarsch geplant ist. Im Fahrzeug spielt die Farbe jedoch eine untergeordnete Rolle. Wir empfehlen generell helle, leichte Kleidung mit langen Ärmeln)
• Eine leichte Regenjacke (besonders empfehlenswert, wenn es in den Regenwald geht, beispielsweise zu den Gorillas. Ein komplett wetterfestes Outfit kann hier von Vorteil sein)
• Handschuhe (abhängig von der Saison – in den afrikanischen Wintermonaten kann es morgens sehr kalt sein)

Unterkörper:

• Khaki-farbene Shorts oder leichte lange Hosen (atmungsaktiv und mit ausreichend Taschen)
• Leichte Wanderschuhe
• Ein Gürtel (für ein Taschenmesser oder Kamera-Halterungs-Clips)
• Atmungsaktive, halblange Socken

Eine Anmerkung zu Khaki-Farben:

Es ist nicht nötig, sich im Vorfeld zu sehr Gedanken zu machen. Militärische Tarnfarben sind nicht erforderlich; alles, was beige, dunkelgrün oder braun ist, ist vollkommen ausreichend. Sollte neue Kleidung benötigt werden, empfehlen wir, Stücke auszuwählen, die auch im Alltag noch getragen werden können.

• Ferngläser (wir empfehlen mindestens eine Vergrößerung von 8×38)
• Taschenmesser
• Kamera & Wechselobjektive
• Kamera-Halterungs-Clips (wir verwenden die von „Peak Design“)
• Kikoi (am besten auf einem lokalen Markt vor Ort kaufen)
• Massai-Decke (am besten auf einem lokalen Markt vor Ort kaufen)
• Sonnencreme
• Mückenschutz
• Eine kleine Wassersprühflasche zur Abkühlung
• Wiederverwendbare Wasserflasche

Eine Anmerkung zu Wasserflaschen:

In den meisten Lodges und Camps in Afrika erhält man heutzutage bei der Ankunft eine wiederverwendbare Wasserflasche, um dem Plastikmüll entgegenzuwirken. Es ist also nicht unbedingt notwendig, vor dem Urlaub eine neue Flasche zu kaufen. Falls Sie jedoch bereits eine Wasserflasche besitzen (vielleicht noch von der letzten Safari oder einem anderen Camp), bitten wir Sie, achtsam zu sein und gegebenenfalls eine weitere Flasche dankend abzulehnen.

What to Wear in Botswana

Top style tips for botswana.

• This is a semi-desert climate – so it's hot during the day and cold at night .
• Casual, comfortable clothes are the key. Dress down rather than up here.
• During the day it is hot, so our advice is to pack lightweight loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics such as linen and cotton that will keep you cool and are easier to wash and dry.
• For the cool evenings, ensure you bring a versatile travel jacket. We love SCOTTeVESTtravel jackets because they have 23 pockets, removable sleeves and RFID protection (for securing your passport information).
• We suggest keeping to light, neutral colors; khaki, green and brown , but not white as it will get dirty and dusty very quickly.
• Also note it is very important to avoid camouflage or military clothing , as this is illegal in Botswana.
• Avoid blue or black clothing too – the tsetse flies are drawn to these colors, and their bite can give you African Sleeping Sickness.
• Long pants and long-sleeved tops will protect you from the harsh sun by day and mosquitoes at night .
• A wide-brimmed safari hat or cap is really useful at any time of year, as even the winter sun is hot .
• Remember your sunglasses and lots of sunscreen (we love the Riemann P20 range for 10 hour protection), and of course insect/mosquito repellent .
• Whenever you travel you will need warm clothes for the evenings – add in a fleece or pashmina . For extra warmth pack some long thermal underwear.
• For early morning excursions pack a warm hat, scarf, gloves and a jacket.
• If you are on safari , the idea is to relax and enjoy your time under the African sky, and listen to the calls of the wild all around you! Dinner dress is therefore casual and comfortable.
• There is a very relaxed dress code in restaurants too – shorts or pants are acceptable for both men and women.

Shoes to pack for Botswana

• If you plan to do much walking, either on safari or with a backpack, then lightweight walking shoes or sneakers are fine . The bush is not always smooth and even, so anything that minimises the chance of a twisted ankle is a good idea. Try Hotter shoes , they are amazingly light and comfortable.
• Flip flops are fine for walking in towns but when traveling between towns then sneakers or lightweight boots are advisable .

Clothing tips for women

• Leave your valuables and jewelry at home , you really won't need them.
• A pashmina or sarong is a versatile item that you can use for sun protection or to ‘glam' up the simplest of outfits if you feel like a change.
• A long skirt or loose-fitting pants are good in the heat and will protect you from the sun.

Clothing tips for men

• There are no specific things to bring to your attention, check out our packing list for our suggested capsule wardrobe .

Pack for the weather

• The dry winter season of May, June, July and August is warm in the day time but bitterly cold at night.
• Summer (November, December, January, February and March) is hot but is also the rainy season when a lightweight raincoat will be useful.

• The Pans are hot, dry and very dusty; carry plenty of water and a scarf or sarong to protect your face from the dust.

Travel essentials to pack for Botswana

• Don’t drink or even brush your teeth in  tap water . Consider taking a LifeStraw Filtration Water Bottle .
• A soft-sided rucksack is more practical than a hard suitcase for safari vacations – it's easier to fit into the small planes or transfer vehicles. Using packing cubes can help to keep your belongings tidy whilst compressing the volume too.
• Internal flights often have much lower baggage limits than your international carrier. Use an accurate luggage scale to ensure you keep within the weight allowance.
• Pack a sling bag or lightweight day sack for sightseeing trips and game drives.
• You may like to carry a solar powered charger too, to boost your battery when out and about – you don't want to miss that great photo opportunity!
• To use electrical gadgets you may need a travel adapter plug , and also a step down voltage converter if your devices are not designed for the local voltage (230V) .
• Don't forget to leave room for souvenirs on the way home! Gaborone and Francistown have plenty of shopping malls, where you can pick up African carvings, baskets or musical instruments , to name a few. Thamaga and Gabane are good places to pick up distinctive Botswana pottery and see it being made. Head to Oodi for textiles or the craft markets at Maun.

You have decided to travel to Botswana and now you ask yourself: what must I pack for my Botswana wildlife safari? Luggage space is limited on safari, so you want to make sure you have brought all the essentials and at the same time, you don’t want to carry something with you halfway across the world only to not need it while you are on your travels. We want to provide you with the best advice on what to bring to Botswana, to make packing for your safari as easy and uncomplicated as possible.

WHICH TYPE OF TRAVEL BAG CAN I USE?

Always opt for softshell bags.

There isn’t much luggage space in a safari vehicle and even less in the small charter aircrafts used on a fly-in safari. Therefore, you should pack your luggage in a softshell bag and avoid any hard-shell suitcases or trolley bags . Many charter airlines in fact, do not allow hard-shell suitcases.

In addition to your main softshell bag, it is always handy to have a small handheld bag with you too . This you can keep with you in the front of the safari vehicle or take with you on hikes or walks; this way you always have your most important items nearby.

If possible, try to make sure that your bags are waterproof. This will give you greater ease of mind when you go on a mokoro excursion or any water activity in general. The waterproof cover will also help against the considerable amount of dust which your bag can get exposed to on a safari.

The weight of your main luggage must not exceed 15 kg and your hand luggage 5 kg . Your safari packing list for Botswana shouldn’t be too long: Packing light is the name of the game here – hence why we provide you with a useful Botswana safari packing list.

WHAT TYPE OF CLOTHES SHOULD I PACK FOR MY BOTSWANA SAFARI?

The old motto, “pack for four seasons in one day” definitely rings true in Botswana (especially in winter), but admittingly this is easier said than done. Avoid packing heavy clothing and rather opt for lightweight clothing which can be worn in layers . Safari zip-off trousers for example are very practical because they can both be worn as long trousers and as shorts.

Clothes made from cotton or microfibres are always good. Try to avoid wearing bright coloured clothing and rather go for more neutral colours such as khaki, olive green, brown and so on. Camouflage, or generally clothes with military design, should not be worn as they can lead to trouble with the local authorities.

You will spend most of your time outdoors on safari, but you might want to also pack some normal casual wear for when you are at lodge restaurants or in towns . Do not worry, it does not have to be anything formal or fancy as most places are quite relaxed with regards to their dress code.

A list of clothes which you should pack:

• Warm jacket, warm jumper
• Wind jacket or rain jacket
• Sweatshirt or light jersey
• Short-sleeved shirts, T-shirts
• Long trousers and shorts
• Swimming costume
• Comfortable shoes (light trekking shoes, trainers, trekking sandals)
• Sandals or flipflops
• Scarf (for winter)
• Beanie (for winter)
• Gloves (for winter)

Space in safari vehicles and airplanes is very limited: Therefore you should pack light and always use softshell bags.

WHICH TOILETRIES AND MEDICINE DO I NEED TO PACK?

Fortunately, almost all the camps and lodges will supply you with shower gel (or soap) and shampoo. Sometimes you may also receive body lotion and conditioner at the lodge too. This means you can leave the big shampoo bottles at home and only need to bring the essentials such as:

• hand sanitizer
• wet wipes and
• some lip balm

If you are taking medication, particularly prescription medication then you must make sure you have more than enough with you to last you on your entire trip.

Should you wear contact lenses then taking extra lens fluid with you is important. You might want to consider rather wearing glasses for your time in Botswana , as the dust and sometimes dry heat can make wearing contact lenses uncomfortable. If you do wear glasses, best to add a second pair to your safari packing list for Botswana – just in case.

A small medical bag, filled with the following items can also make a big difference:

• antiseptic cream
• antihistamine tablets or cream
• sunburn relief
• anti-diarrhoea medicine
• pain relief medicine
• nausea medicine
• eye drops and
• motion sickness tablets

Further items to take with are:

• sunscreen with high sun protection factor
• mosquito repellent
• malaria prophylaxis (after consultation with your doctor or tropical institute)
• first aid kit and

WHICH SAFARI ACCESSORIES SHOULD I ALWAYS TAKE WITH ON SAFARI IN BOTSWANA?

Safari accessories are the items and gadgets which you do not want to forget at home when you are about to go on a Botswana wildlife safari. First and foremost, a good photo camera. Even though it is possible to take great photos these days with one’s phone’s built-in camera, a real camera with a good lens will still take the best pictures . The best lenses generally for a wildlife safari are wide angle zoom lenses.

A headtorch is another very handy tool to bring along and you should definitely pack a headtorch if you are on a Botswana camping safari. The campsites can get very dark at night, so it is always great when you have some light to see where you are going. A normal torch or flashlight would also work fine, but the advantage of the headtorch is that your hands remain free.

A good pair of binoculars is another safari essential . They enable you to spot animals which would sometimes have been difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye and can provide a great close-up view of animals which are not too far away. Try to bring a pair of binoculars which are not big and bulky, but at the same time still provide you with excellent optics.

Further safari accessories which are useful on a Botswana safari:

• UV protected sunglasses
• adapter (most commonly the South African Type M is used – three round pins, however there are differences between the lodges so a universal adapter will also be handy)
• bird and mammal book for Southern Africa (or as an app on your phone)
• older cell phone (sim cards can be purchased on site)
• reusable water bottle (to lessen plastic consumption) and
• a neck pouch, money belt or hip bag (for money, documents, passport, vaccination card)

WHICH DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO BRING ALONG FOR MY TRIP TO BOTSWANA?

Most importantly, you need a passport which is valid for at least six months and contains at least three blank pages . There are many countries whose citizens do not require a holiday visa for Botswana for up to 90 days, including most European countries, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. But regulations can change, so we urge you to contact the Botswana embassy in your home country regarding current requirements.

You will also require a valid return ticket or other onward travel documents for your return travel . If you do not have this, you must provide proof that you have sufficient funds (such as on your credit card) to purchase a return ticket.

A good tip is to make photocopies of all your important travel documents including your passport, international driver’s license (if you are on a self-drive tour) and your return ticket. Remember to store these separately from your original documents.

If you (both parents) are travelling with your under-18 child, then you will need to provide an unabridged birth certificate and a valid passport for the child . If only one of the parents is travelling with the child, then the parent travelling will need to provide an affidavit of consent, court order or death certificate to indicate that the parent not present has given their necessary permission that the child may travel.

Afrika Packliste: Safari Ausrüstung

Afrika packliste: die ideale ausrüstung für safaris und pirschfahrten.

Wer zum ersten Mal auf Safari geht weiß oft nicht, was er einpacken soll. Außer der „typischen“ Safari-Ausrüstung: sandfarbene Hose, olivgrünes Hemd und am besten einen Hut in gedeckten Farbtönen. Ganz ehrlich? Ich besaß weder den typischen Hut noch eine olivgrüne Bluse. Eine sandfarbene Hose schon. Doch viel lieber ziehe ich eine andere Hose an, statt mich wie alle in Sand zu kleiden.

Hier habe ich dir aufgelistet, was ich im Laufe der Jahre und meinen Reisen nach Südafrika , Kenia , Tansania , Uganda , Ruanda , Namibia und Botswana bei sogenannten Game-Drives (Pirschfahrten) und Bush Walks (Buschwanderungen zu Fuß) dabei hatte.

Übrigens besitze ich mittlerweile sogar einen "typischen" Safari Hut - diesen habe ich mir aber nicht für Afrika und Game Drives oder Bush Walks sondern für meinen 3-monatigen Australien Trip gekauft. Rate mal, wie oft ich ihn aufhatte? Genau: Kein einziges Mal! Jetzt habe ich ihn meinen Trägern bei der Kilimandscharo Besteigung geschenkt.

• Welche Art Safaris planst du?

Bist du das erste Mal in Ostafrika oder im südlichen Afrika und möchtest nur Pirschfahrten im Auto unternehmen? Dann ist es völlig egal, welche Kleidung du trägst. Vor allem in Südafrika und Namibia sind die Tiere in Nationalparks so sehr an Menschen und Autos gewöhnt, dass sie nicht davonrennen. Auch in Kenia oder Tansania ist es in den bekanntesten Nationalparks der Fall.

In diesen Ländern kommt hinzu, dass Masai rot tragen. Vor allem für Großkatzen löst das ein Alarm aus, denn sie wissen: Rot gibt Ärger. Also halten sie sich fern. Da Safari Autos in den beiden Ländern oft geschlossen sind, ist deine Farbwahl dann allerdings genauso nebensächlich wie in den beiden südlichen Ländern.

Allerdings gibt es kleine Einschränkungen bei der Kleiderwahl:

• Schwarz und Blau zieht Moskitos und in manchen Regionen auch die Tsetsefliege an (überträgt die Schlafkrankheit beispielsweise im Tarangire Nationalpark in Tansania).
• Bist du hingegen über 2.000 Meter, was in Uganda und Ruanda der Fall sein kann, kannst du schwarz tragen , da auf dieser Höhe keine Moskitos mehr vorkommen (ist ein Richtwert).
• Bist du viel zu Fuß im Busch auf sogenannten Bush Walks unterwegs? Dann solltest du definitiv die Farben der Natur tragen. Grün , Sand und Braun sind ideal.
• Vergesse beim Packen nie: Weniger ist mehr.

Egal, ob du mit dem Dachzelt oder in Lodges unterwegs bist. Reisen in Safari-Länder bedeuten eigentlich immer: Lässige und bequeme Kleidung im Zwiebellook. Die schickeren Klamotten kannst du getrost zu Hause lassen.

Waschen kannst du vor Ort meist selbst (wenn das Wasser sauber ist). In teuren Lodges gibt es fast immer den Service, kostenlos Wäsche waschen lassen. Vor allem bei meiner Reise nach Namibia und Botawana zur Trockenzeit waren die Kleidungsstücke innerhalb kürzester Zeit trocken, nur die Klamotten waren oft noch von einem leichten braun-Schleier bedeckt, da dann das Wasser eben nicht ganz sauber, dazu Mangelware ist. Aber die Kleidung war oft innerhalb einer Stunde trocken, das war echt schnell!

Beachte: Bei Fügen mit Buschflieger (zum Beispiel ins Okavango Delta) ist nur kleines Gepäck bis zu 8 - 10 kg erlaubt. Informiere dich vor der Reise darüber. Bei Buschfliegern in Tansania waren 20 kg erlaubt, was aber niemand geprüft hat (zumindest nicht am Serengeti Airstrip oder Arusha Airport).

• Wir sind "nur" auf Safari - übertreibe es nicht mit Tarnkleidung

Ich habe auf Safaris schon alles gesehen: Von knallig neonfarbenen T-Shirts (auf Walking Safaris !!!) bis zu Tarnkleidung in Camouflage-Muster. Auch ich habe mir anfangs oft keine Gedanken gemacht. Nur knallige Farben versuchte ich zu vermeiden. Doch beim Gorilla Trekking in Uganda war es dann passiert: Es regnete in Strömen und ich kam mir in meiner leuchtend türkisfarbenen Jacke so richtig bescheuert vor.

Nach der Reise habe ich mir sofort eine in gedeckten Naturfarben gekauft. Ich mag knallige Farben wirklich, doch wer zu Fuß wilde Tiere in freier Natur beobachten möchte, sollte eben deckende Farben wie Khaki , Beige und Braun tragen. Klassische Safari-Farben eben.

Ob es jetzt ein Safari-Outfit sein muss oder nicht - ich trug in Südafrika, Botswana, Namibia und größtenteils auch in Uganda und Ruanda meine ganz normalen Chino-Hosen die ich auch im Alltag trage, keine speziellen Hosen, die ich mir davor im Outdoor-Shop meines Vertrauens gekauft habe. Ideal sind übrigens Leinenhosen und Hemden. Sie sind kühl und angenehm auf der Haut zu tragen. Auch bei Temperaturen über 40 Grad ideal.

Lediglich beim Gorilla-Trekking in Uganda und Ruanda habe ich meine lange Zip-Hose getragen, da sie dünn und sehr bequem ist. Das Resultat war dann ein langer Riss durch Dornen im undurchdringlichen Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Ein Glück hatte ich damals nicht die normale Hose an.

Camouflage-Kleidung würde ich generell zu Hause lassen , da dies oft missverstanden werden kann. Diese Kleidung wird nur vom Militär , Wilderern oder Anti-Wilderer-Einheiten getragen - echt jetzt! Bist du nahezu ausschließlich im Auto auf Game Drives? Dann ist es egal, was du trägst. Natürlich sind gedeckte Farben besser, allerdings bist du im Auto nicht in Gefahr und musst dich nicht tarnen.

• Auf Safaris ist es nicht immer heiß - mein Tipp: Zwiebellook!

Auf meinen Safaris in Südafrika und im Juli oder in Ostafrika war es morgens extrem kalt oder kühl. Daher solltest du wirklich darauf achten, zu welcher Jahreszeit du reist. Unsere Sommermonate sind dort die Wintermonate. Vor Sonnenaufgang und nach Sonnenuntergang ist es kalt.

Eine Softshell- oder Fleecejacke reicht oft aus. In Kenia im Julia in der Masai Mara blies allerdings der Wind so eiskalt, dass ich froh war, eine Wollmütze und zusätzliche dünne Daunenjacke eingepackt zu haben. Sobald die Sonne aufgegangen ist, kannst du Jacken und Mützen meist ablegen.

Auch diese verhassten Zip-Hosen (ich mag die nicht sonderlich) könnten für den ein oder anderen nützlich sein, denn die Beine kann man schnell abtrennen und hat im Handumdrehen eine kurze Hose.

• Ich reise mit Rucksack oder Duffle Bag

Aktuell habe ich meinst meinen Wanderrucksack (Tatonka) als Handgepäck dabei. Fotorucksäcke nutze ich nur noch selten. Für Bush Walks (Spaziergänge in der Savanne) eignen sich Rucksäcke in Olive oder Brauntönen. Da Tatonka keinen im Angebot hat, habe ich hier einen Rucksack von Fjällräven im Einsatz.

Das Innenteil meiner Fotorucksäcke habe ich in den Wanderrucksäcken dabei, damit Kamera und Objektive im Rucksack geschützt sind.

Der Fjällräven Rucksack besitzt zahlreiche Fächer, um Laptop, Kamerazubehör, Geldbeutel, Dokumente, Trinkflaschen etc. perfekt zu verstauen. Für Bush Walks hat er dazu einen Hüft- und Brustgurt. Ich könnte sogar eine Trinkblase für längere Fußmärsche mitnehmen. Habe ich aber nicht immer dabei. Dieser Rucksack ist für mich bei Wanderungen der Beste.

Oft entscheide ich spontan, welcher Rucksack mitkommt.

• Was kommt ins Handgepäck?

Beim Hinflug rate ich mittlerweile immer, einmal Ersatzkleidung für den nächsten Tag einzupacken, falls es wirklich mal passiert, und das aufgegebene Gepäck erst 1 bis 2 Tage später ankommt. Ist uns leider alles schon passiert.

• Daher mein Tipp: Wechselkleidung für 1 bis 2 Tage einpacken
• Ein Paar Kompressionssocken für den Flug
• Wichtige Dokumente wie Reisepass, Internationaler + Nationaler Führerschein (je nach Destination), Impfpass
• Erste Adresse, die ich bei der Einreise oft angeben muss
• Bargeld (ein paar Euros, ein paar Rand oder Schilling, ein paar US-Dollar, alle in kleinen Scheinen)
• iPad oder Kindle mit Büchern, Reiseführern
• Wasserdichte und verschließbare Beutel von Tatonka , vorwiegend der Reisepass und wichtige Dokumente freuen sich über eine wasserdichte Aufbewahrung.
• Ein weiterer Beutel von Tatonka für Lippenbalsam, Handcreme, Zahnbürste und kleiner Zahnpasta (falls das Hauptgepäck nicht mitkommt), kleines Deo (von Holy Pit zum nachfüllen , schon die Umwelt) sowie fester Seife ( auch von Holy Pit )
• Mein spezielles Reisetagebuch für Roadtrips (das du auch kaufen kannst)
• Mein MacBook Pro 12″, Ladegerät und kleine externe SSD-Festplatte (wasserdicht)
• Reiseadapter für das entsprechende Land (Kenia, Tansania und Südafrika haben die englischen Adapter, manchmal passt dein deutscher Stecker trotzdem in die Steckdose)
• Kamera, Objektive, Ersatz-Akkus, Ersatz-Speicherkarten
• Externer Powerbank zum Laden von Smartphone, iPad und Kamera
• Safari Kleidung
• Sonnenschutz: Sonnenbrille, Hut oder Baseballkappe und Sonnencreme.
• 1-2 leichte Longsleeves (am besten mit UV-Schutz) oder Blusen und lange Hosen zum Schutz vor Moskitos und vor Dornen bei Walking Safaris
• 1 -2  Shorts, 3 - 4 Tops und 3 -4 T-Shirts (reist du im afrikanischen Winter, dann eher Longsleeves, Pullis und lange Hosen)
• 1 bequemer Pulli (meist Kapuzenpullover)
• Flip-Flops oder Birkenstock
• Bequeme Schuhe für Bush Walks (Leichte Trekkingschuhe mit guter Sohle oder die typischen Schuhe aus Südafrika von Veldskoen – ich besitze beides)
• Eventuell Gamaschen für Spaziergänge im Busch
• Softshell- oder Fleece-Jacke
• Socken und Unterwäsche für 1 Woche
• Evtl. eine Tunika oder Bluse für abends
• Schlafsachen
• Microfaser-Handtuch (trocknet schnell und ist platzsparend)
• Bikini oder Badeshorts
• Als Frau ein Kleid
• Welches Fernglas für eine Safari?

Auf der ersten Reise nach Südafrika hatte ich kein Fernglas dabei. Mittlerweile weiß ich: Ein Fernglas ist ein absolutes Must-Have! Anfangs hatte ich ein kleines und günstiges (wie dieses von Decathlon), mittlerweile besitze ich das STEINER Fernglas Ranger Xtreme 8x56 .

Dieses begleitet mich nicht nur auf Safaris ins östliche und südliche Afrika, sondern auch in den Regenwald (Kolumbien, Peru und Costa Rica, um die Faultiere und Tucane oder Papageien hoch oben in den Bäumen zu finden).

Früher hatte ich ein billiges Modell, mit dem ich nie so ganz zufrieden war. Jetzt habe ich meinen Allrounder gefunden und habe auf meiner letzten Reise in Tansania lange damit verbracht, Geparden mit Jungen in weiter Ferne zu beobachten, da meine Kamera mit 100-400 mm Telezoom nicht so scharf und nah herankam.

• Welche Safari Fotoausrüstung - meine Kamera und Objektive?

Da ich sehr viel reise, muss meine Kamera vor allem eins sein: robust. Hier habe ich mit der Sony Alpha 7 IV bislang perfekte Erfahrung gesammelt. Sie ist eine der wenigen Kameras, die eine automatische Augensensorerkennung besitzen (für Mensch, Tier und Vogel). Somit hast du garantiert scharfe Fotos.

Ein weiterer Vorteil ist, dass bei diesem neuen Sony Modell der Sensor geschlossen werden kann (wenn du sie nicht auf lautlos stellst). Beim Objektivwechsel in der Savanne hast du somit den Vorteil, dass kein Schmutz mehr auf deinen empfindlichen Sensor gelangt.

Eine weitere Anforderung an eine Kamera ist außerdem, dass sie per Kabel über USB im Auto über ein Akkupack geladen werden kann. In Botswana war ich fast vier Wochen mit Auto und Dachzelt unterwegs und hatte selten Strom zur Verfügung.

Ich weiß, dass die Sony Alpha 7 IV kein Schnäppchen ist. Obendrein ist sie eher schon in der Kategorie "für Profis" und ist dadurch nicht mehr ganz so kompakt und klein. Die Objektive, die ich mir geleistet habe, sind zudem sehr kostspielig. Daher der nächste Punkt:

• Lichtstarke Objektive und ein schneller Autofokus sind das wichtigste bei einer Safari.
• Must-have: 100 - 400 mm, mein meistgenutztes Objektiv bei Safaris. Alternativ das 70-200 mit Konverter.

Obendrein greife ich oft zum Fernglas (siehe oben), um einfach nur zu beobachten und genießen, damit die Safari nicht in Stress ausartet. Vor allem Vögel kannst du so ideal beobachten.

• Weitere unverzichtbare Reiseutensilien
• Taschenmesser: Was würde ich mittlerweile ohne Leatherman machen? Mit ihm konnte ich die Schrauben meiner Sonnenbrille wieder fest drehen, irgendwelche Kabel durchtrennen oder die Schere davon benutzen. Wichtigstes Utensil auf unserem Trip mit Dachzelt durch Namibia und Botswana.
• Stirnlampe (+ Ersatzbatterien): Zweitwichtigster Gegenstand außer dem Taschenmesser in Afrika! Meine hat sogar eine Infrarot-Funktion, damit du die Tiere sehen kannst und nicht blendest.
• Reiseapotheke: Ein Erstes-Hilfe-Set habe ich in Afrika immer dabei. Egal, ob Pflaster, Immodium Akkut, Breitband-Antibiotikum oder Malaria-Prophylaxe. Ich habe schon alles gebraucht. Meist dann, wenn die nächste Apotheke weit weg war. Meine ausführliche Reiseapotheken Checkliste findest du hier (inkl. PDF zum Download). 
• Feuchte Tücher (Baby Wipes sind übrigens super), wenn mal keine Dusche da ist.
• Sagrotan Gel , wenn kein Wasser in der Nähe ist. Immer schön Hände waschen ist Pflicht.
• Insektenspray mit DEET (kannst du auch vor Ort kaufen, das ist oft sogar besser)
• Trinkblase für längere Wanderungen und Bush Walks, dann musst du nicht immer nach hinten zur Trinkflasche greifen.
• Mein Reisetagebuch , damit ich alle Erinnerungen festhalten kann

Die UNterkünfte in Afrika werden mit Solarstrom betrieben und daher ist es abends nur stundenweise möglich seine Akkus und das Handy aufzuladen. Außer dem Adapter sollte man daher einen Mehrfachstecker mitnehmen um diese gleichzeitig aufzuladen.

Nehmen Sie der Jahreszeit entsprechend legere, robuste Reisekleidung mit. Wählen Sie bequeme Kleidung, die Sie nicht einengt. Denken Sie auch an einen warmen Pullover oder eine Jacke. Gesellschaftskleidung ist nicht notwendig. Wichtig sind feste (zum Wandern: knöchelhohe) Schuhe sowie eine gute Kopfbedeckung, die auch den Nacken vor Sonne schützt (am besten ein breitkrempiger Hut). Und natürlich sollten Sie Badeanzug bzw. • Pack women's safari shirts which are not only safari-suitable, but which are also safari-styled and allow you to stay comfortable while looking and feeling feminine. As we usually say: stay in a tent on safari; don't wear a tent-shaped shirt. Women's safari shirts can and should be stylish.
• Women's safari shirts should be khaki or shades of brown and green to blend in best with the environment while on safari.
• Women's safari shirts which are long-sleeved allow you to roll your sleeves up and down when you need to stay cool, keep warm, or to avoid sunburn on your arms. Therefore, we recommend that you pack more long-sleeved than short-sleeved safari shirts in your safari packing mix.
• Collared women's safari shirts give you added protection from sunburn.
• Important features for women's safari shirts include: ability to wick moisture to keep you cool, high level of sun protection (SPF50+ is best), and an anti-insect fabric finish to reduce your chances of being bitten by most flying and biting insects.
• Pack more women's safari shirts made from man-made fibres (polyamide) than natural fibres (such as cotton). Man-made fibres are better at wicking moisture from the skin - and it is this movement of moisture which keeps you cool.

• Pack a women's safari jacket or women's safari fleece for all safaris. Opt for either a long-sleeved safari fleece or safari jacket or a safari fleece vest depending on the season - as the temperature does drop on safari.
• Why does it get cold in Africa - isn't is hot all the time? The short answer is no, it is not hot all the time. The reasons for the cold include: African winters, wind chill on safaris in open 4x4s (dipping into valleys and drainage lines also adds an extra bite of cold), early morning starts and late evening finishes for safari activities, land-locked countries, and many safari areas being high above sea level - the Maasai Mara & Serengeti (and most of East Africa) are the height of some ski resorts at 1,400 meters above sea level. Botswana, parts of Zambia, and Namibia are also more or less 1,000 meters above sea level.
• The safari experience is similar to a desert trip where it starts off cold in the mornings, usually heats up by midday to warm or hot, but then may become cold again in the evenings. It worth bearing in mind that, as animals are more active when it is cooler - with hotter temperatures at midday - the earlier you will go on safari, which means the cooler it will be. Again, you should definitely pack a women's safari fleece or women's safari jacket for your safari. We have given this advice to clients who have ignored it and returned from an October safari in Botswana to tell us that, yes, they did indeed get cold despite the midday heat.
• For the African winter, pack a long-sleeved safari jacket or safari fleece and, for the summer, either a vest safari jacket or safari fleece, but then wear a long-sleeved safari shirt underneath so that the sleeves help to keep you warm.
• Colour is still key when choosing the correct safari fleece or safari jacket, especially on early morning walks. Pack safari fleeces or jackets which are made from neutral shades such as khaki, green, or brown.
• For safari travel over the rainy season, pack a high-quality, waterproof safari jacket which is proven to actually work. For East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda), the rains generally occur in two parts: the longer monsoon in April and May and then the shorter rains around November. Higher safari areas such as the Ngorongoro Crater catch the wind from the sea and it may rain at any time of the year. Southern Tanzania differs from this and is similar to the rainy season in Zambia, Botswana, and northern Mozambique - and falls between late November and late March, often extending into April. As a general rule, if one had to ask "when is Africa always dry?" - the answer would be May to October, with regional rains still possible in some parts. Please also note that the South African rainy season is split down the middle of the country, with the east receiving rain through summer and the west a winter rainfall area. That winter rainfall can push through in cold fronts to the east of the country too.
• Having lived in Africa through the rains we are also able to advise that the daytime temperature goes from very hot before the rains start, to much cooler once the rains have settled in. The difference may be as much as 10 to 15 degrees celsius below the average temperatures and so again we advise that a fleece or jacket is packed to keep you warm.

• If you are going on a classic game drive type of safari, then pack comfortable women's safari shoes to wear on game drive but which are able to double as good walking shoes for a walk in the bush - an activity we highly recommend. Note that if you do not have walking shoes with you on game drive then your guide may decide against a quick impromptu walk in the bush
• Also take a pair of women's safari shoes to wear around the camp. These may be the same pair as your select for the above, but it may also be a pair of cooler sandals, pumps, or similar.
• For full-on walking safaris make sure you take women's safari shoes which are made for longer hikes - and ensure that you walk them in properly before you go on safari. You may prefer low rise canvas trail shoes or leather higher rise boots - the preference is purely personal.
• If you are going on a walking safari in sandy areas (check with the walking safari company you have booked with) then we suggest that you pack higher rise boots with a built in tongue - such as our Rufiji™ APU Safari Combat Boots - as this will minimise the amount of sand which goes into the shoe which will cause discomfort.
• We would still take a a pair of cooler women's shoes or sandals for before and after walks when around the camp.
• Safari tip: always check your shoes for small snakes, scorpions, spiders and insects before putting them on.

• Pack comfortable, lightweight women's safari trousers which are made in safari-suitable colours such as shades of khaki, brown, and green. Trousers made from anti-insect fabric will give you extra defence from most biting insects too.
• Women's safari zip-off/convertible trousers are often the safari trousers of choice for women simply due to their versatility - no matter how hot or cold it is on safari. Use them as trousers when cool, shorts when hot - and they save on valuable packing space by being two garments in one. The legs on women's safari convertible pants also give added protection from the sun and defence from most biting insects - especially when treated with built-in SPF and anti-insect finish. For walking safaris, having separate waterproof leg sections which provide insect defence work well given the morning dew on early morning walks - ensuring your legs stay drier and reducing bites (although you should always apply insect repellent for ticks and other insects).
• If you prefer to wear stand-alone women's safari trousers and women's safari shorts, then make sure you work out the duration of the activity and wear either trousers or the shorts depending on the weather. While other trousers are perhaps more stylish than women's safari zip-off trousers, there is no use starting off warm when it's cold in the morning only to sweat in the heat later on in the day. Another option if you prefer separate safari trousers and safari shorts would be to take shorts or trousers with you on each safari activity in a satchel or daypack and change while on the activity.
• The ideal women's safari trousers and shorts should offer you a good level of style with a feminine cut. They should also be lightweight, strong, provide a high level of sun protection (SPF50+ is best), and have an anti-insect finish. Wicking is less important from a sweat point of view as your legs don't sweat as much as your upper body, but still consider wicking as an important feature to ensure that, should your trousers get wet from the rain or a water-based activity - or even just the morning dew while walking - that they dry very quickly.
• Again, while your lower body does not feel the heat as much as your upper body, always consider women's safari trousers which are made from man-made fibres (such as polyamide) over those made from natural fibres (such as cotton). Women's safari trousers and safari shorts made from man-made fibres will also crease less and dry faster when you wash them on your safari and travels.

• For the best protection from the strength of the midday sun in Africa - for your neck and face - pack a wide-brimmed women's safari hat.
• With mean high temperatures reaching mid-20 to mid-30 degrees Celsius on most safaris and with safari areas in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and Zambia high above sea level, the effects of the sun will be pronounced and the risk of being burnt by the sun will be high. A wide-brimmed women's safari hat is literally your first line of defence against sunburn.
• Wide-brimmed women's safari hats also provide shelter when it rains. We find that a wide-brimmed safari hat definitely makes it more comfortable when you are caught out on a walk or game drive by a sudden thunderstorm or tropical shower, as at least your face remains dry and fewer drops go into your eyes.
• Colour is key when choosing a women's safari hat - with neutral shades such as khaki, green, or brown the best. Your safari hat will often be the most conspicuous part of you while viewing wildlife on a walking safari.
• Pack a women's safari hat which suits your safari style. Fortunately, there are more styles available for women today which range from leather hats to classically-styled indie and panama-shaped hats.
• Modern wide-brimmed women's safari hats are also conveniently packable and are easy manipulate back into shape. A note though: not all hats are packable and should be carried with your carry-on luggage - and, even when a hat is packable, never crush your safari hat under a hard object - such as shoes or binoculars - when packing.

• Walking in the bush while on safari is the quintessential experience. We recommend it to all who go to Africa.

Keep your safari beanie in the bag you take on game drives. You may well get some envious stares from others who have not had the foresight to pack a safari beanie.
• Further to the point above, for the African summer, pack a women's safari beanie just in case. For the most part, your women's wide-brimmed safari hat should keep you warm enough, but why take the risk? Please also take note of the altitude of the area in which you are going on safari. The Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, as an example, is over 2000 metres above sea level and most camps are on the rim of the crater and so may have cold temperatures (morning and evenings in particular) and precipitation throughout the year, so we would recommend taking warmer safari accessories just in case.
• Pack safari scarves, safari beanies, and safari gloves in safari colours.

Welche Schuhe für eine Safari?

Wir empfehlen bei Trekking-Walking-Safaris etwas höhere Wanderschuhe mit sanddichten, leichten Obermaterialien und starken Sohlen, die auch hohe Temperaturen aushalten.

Der Vorteil gegenüber Halbschuhen besteht darin, dass auch die Knöchel vor Dornen und Insekten geschützt sind, zudem hat man besseren Halt.

Eine weiche, dicke Gummisohle hält die Hitze von unten ab und eignet sich gut für weiche Sand- und Schlammböden. Sind die Schuhe auch noch  wasserdicht , ist das natürlich umso besser.

Goretex XCR wurde beispielsweise spezielle für heiße Klimabedingungen entwickelt. Wichtig ist zudem, dass  die Schuhe atmungsaktiv  sind.

Dein Ratgeber zum Kauf von Safarikleidung

Du fragst dich jetzt vielleicht, warum die Kleidung unbedingt hell bzw. im klassischen Safari-Beige gehalten sein muss.

Welche Farbe sollte Safari Kleidung haben?

Mücken stehen total auf dunkle Farben:  Schwarz und dunkelblau  sind daher für Safari taugliche Kleidung ein absolutes  No-Go . Ebenso wenig eignen sich leuchtende und grelle Farben, denn durch diese werden Elefanten, Nashörner, Büffel, Löwen sowie verschiedene Insekten auf dich aufmerksam.

Ein Safari-Look in neutralen hellen Erdtönen, beige und khaki sorgt hingegen dafür, dass du in der Steppe optimal getarnt bist und die Tiere unbemerkt beobachten kannst.  Helle Farbtöne  sind natürlich auch bei intensiver Sonneneinstrahlung besser geeignet!

Integrierter Mückenschutz bei Safari Kleidung ist Pflicht

Nicht nur die Farbe der Kleidung ist beim Schutz vor den gefährlichen Stechmücken entscheidend, professionelle Safari Klamotten beinhalten unbedingt auch zusätzlichen Mückenschutz.

Der Saugrüssel einer Stechmücke ist rund ein Zehntel Millimeter dünn. Gewöhnliche Socken, T-Shirts und Hosen aus Baumwolle sind daher für Mücken kein wirkliches Hindernis.

Fakt : Noch immer erfolgen rund 40% der Mückenstiche durch die Kleidung hindurch. Wie kann man sich also am besten schützen? Es gibt im Prinzip zwei Möglichkeiten sich die lästigen Moskitos vom Hals zu halten:

• Mückenschutz Kleidung

Engmaschig gewebte   Kleidung  verhindert, dass die Mücken durch die Kleidung stechen können. Vorteil einer solchen „stichfesten“ Kleidung ist, dass keine chemische Behandlung mit  Repellentien  notwendig ist.

Der Nachteil liegt auf der Hand: Eng gewebte und damit feste Kleidung ist meistens leider auch sehr warm. Eine denkbar ungünstige Eigenschaft für  Reisen in tropische und subtropische Gebiete .

Nur funktionale Mischgewebe spezieller Marken sind fein gewebt und gleichzeitig trotzdem leicht.

Kleidung imprägnieren

Eine Alternative dazu ist  imprägnierte   Kleidung : Die Kleidung wird hierbei mit einem Moskitoabwehrmittel (häufig auf Basis des Wirkstoffs „ Permethrin “) behandelt bzw. das insektenabweisende Mittel wird dauerhaft in das Material eingearbeitet.

Wenn du absolut auf Nummer sichergehen willst, kannst du die imprägnierte Kleidung noch zusätzlich selbst mit speziellen  Antimücken-Kleidersprays  einsprühen.

Diese Eigenschaften sollte Safari Kleidung außerdem bieten

In der Regel hast du bei einer Safari-Reise nicht deinen ganzen Kleiderschrank dabei, die Kleidung muss daher so  bequem, praktisch, unkompliziert und pflegeleicht  wie nur möglich sein.

Bei Reisen in warme Gebiete ist es auf den ersten Blick recht verlockend zu kurzer, lockerer und luftiger Kleidung zu greifen. Diese wirst du zwar teilweise auch brauchen, aber nicht nur…

Schon allein zum Schutz vor Insekten bzw. Moskitos sind  lange Hosen und ein langärmliges Oberteil  absolut notwendig. Das schützt auch besser vor der intensiven Sonneneinstrahlung.

Safari Kleidung mit integriertem UV-Schutz

Klar: Jede Bekleidung ist besser als nackte Haut, aber nur geprüfte Stoffe bieten wirkliche Sicherheit. Die meisten speziellen Outdoor-Produkte für Safaris haben daher zudem einen  UV-Schutz  integriert.

Kleidung mit UV-Schutz ist bei Reisen in heiße, sonnenintensive Gegenden natürlich absolut notwendig. Bei qualitativ hochwertiger Kleidung wird der UV-Schutz nicht durch chemische Verarbeitung, sondern durch  die Verwendung spezieller Garne  oder schon durch die Verarbeitung bzw. Konstruktion des Stoffes erreicht.

Dadurch ist der Schutz langlebiger und wird nicht durch wiederholtes Waschen oder Schwitzen vermindert. Die Höhe des UV-Schutzes variiert sehr stark und muss natürlich an das Reiseziel angepasst werden.

Nach Europäischen Standards gelten Kleidungsstücke mit einem geprüften UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor)  von mindestens 40  auch als klassifizierte „Sonnenschutzkleidung“. Der UPF von Materialien ist mit dem Lichtschutzfaktor (LSF) von Sonnencremes vergleichbar.

Safari Kleidung muss richtig sitzen

Achte beim Kauf der Kleidung auch auf die richtige Passform: Die Kleidung sollte  leicht anliegend  aber  nicht zu eng  sein. Zu enge Kleidung ermöglicht einerseits das Durchstechen der Mücken, andererseits ist sie natürlich unbequem und warm.

Auch von zu weiter Kleidung ist abzuraten, denn sitzt die Hose zu locker, eröffnen sich für die Insekten Schlupflöcher und sie können dich ungehindert stechen. Probiere daher die Kleidung ausgiebig und checke ab, ob du auch wirklich die richtige Größe gewählt hast.

Materialbeschaffenheit beachten

Nachdem wir das jetzt mit der grundsätzlichen Beschaffenheit und Passform der Kleidung geklärt hätten, werfen wir einen genaueren Blick auf das Material von Safari Kleidung, welches möglichst  leicht und atmungsaktiv  sein sollte.

Hier ist natürlich das verwendete Gewebe entscheidend. Viele Produkte haben zusätzlich praktische Elemente (z.B. Reißverschlüsse, belüftete Rückenpasse usw.) integriert, die zu einer verbesserten Luftzirkulation beitragen.

Das geringe Gewicht hat natürlich noch einen weiteren Vorteil: In Jeeps oder Propellerflugzeugen ist das zulässige Gepäcksgewicht oft sehr begrenzt – je leichter die Kleidung ist, desto mehr davon kannst du mitnehmen.

Wer schon einmal in tropische oder subtropische Gebiete gereist ist, weiß wie schnell und viel man unter bestimmten Bedingungen zu Schwitzen beginnt und/oder von spontanen Regenschauern überrascht wird.

Das Material der Kleidungsstücke muss daher auch unbedingt  wasserabweisend und   schnelltrocknend  sein. Diese Eigenschaft bewährt sich natürlich auch, wenn du die Kleidung auf Reisen wäschst und für das Trocknen nicht ewig Zeit hast.

Damit wären wir schon beim nächsten Punkt: Bestenfalls sind die Materialien deiner Safari-Kleidung nicht nur wasser- sondern auch  schmutzabweisend . Kleinere Verunreinigungen kannst du dann schnell mit der Hand auswaschen, das Trocknen ist ja in den meisten Fällen kein Problem.

Ebenso praktisch sind  knitterfreie   Textilien , sodass die Kleidung auch frisch aus dem Koffer oder nach wochenlangen Rucksackreisen noch halbwegs akzeptabel aussieht.

Es gibt noch weitere Eigenschaften, die dir vielleicht nicht spontan auffallen, die aber dann auf Reisen sehr nützlich sind: Zum einen sollen die Hosen, Shirts und Jacken ein möglichst  kleines Packmaß  haben, damit du so viel wie du brauchst auch mitnehmen kannst.

Besonders wenn du länger unterwegs bist, möchtest du so wenig unnötigen Ballast wie nur möglich mitschleppen. Am besten eignen sich daher superleichte Textilien mit wenig Packvolumen. Zudem sind unterwegs Jacken, Hosen und Westen mit  vielen gut verschließbaren Taschen  sehr praktisch.

Was du sonst noch einpacken solltest

Denke unbedingt an eine  Kopfbedeckung . Die direkte Sonneneinstrahlung in den niederen Breiten wird manchmal völlig unterschätzt. Zudem musst du auch damit rechnen, dass du (bestenfalls) sehr viel Zeit im Freien verbringst.

Das gewöhnliche Baseball Cap oder Kopftuch reichen auf Safari-Reisen oft nicht aus, da der Nacken oder die Ohren ungeschützt sind.

Auch wenn sie vielleicht etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig aussehen, empfehlen wir daher Hüte, die rundum schützen. Besonders Mutige können sich natürlich auch an die Legionärskappe wagen.

Passende Socken  nicht vergessen! Die idealen Safari Socken sind luftdurchlässig und trocknen schnell. Da Mücken auch gerne mal im Knöchelbereich zustechen, empfehlen sich Socken mit speziellen, wasserresistenten Anti-Mücken-Imprägnierungen.

Zip-Off  Hosen und Jacken sind bei Reisen in Gebiete mit wechselhaftem Klima besonders praktisch. Blitzschnell werden Hosen zu Shorts und Jacken zu Westen umfunktioniert.

Fleece oder Jacke : Die Temperaturschwankungen in den Safarigebieten werden oft unterschätzt. So gähnend heiß es auch zur Mittagszeit sein kann, in den Abendstunden und am Morgen kann es extrem abkühlen.

Unser Tipp ist daher:  Zweibellook!  Denke daher daran einen warmen Pulli bzw. Fleece sowie eine warme Jacke einzupacken. Je nach Jahreszeit und Reiseziel ist auch eine Regenjacke empfehlenswert.

Eine winddichte Jacke zum Überziehen ist ebenfalls keine schlechte Idee, wenn man mit den offenen Safari-Fahrzeugen unterwegs ist.  Weitere praktische Gadgets sind:

• Lange, warme Schlafbekleidung; warme Thermowäsche
• Sonnenbrille und Sonnenschutz
• Insektenspray mit DEET, z.B. Anti Brumm Forte

Beliebte Safari Gebiete

Der Begriff „Safari“ ist allseits aus Filmen und Büchern bekannt, ursprünglich war die Safari eine Reise mit dem Ziel Großwild zu jagen. Heute ist das Ziel einer Safari nicht mehr die Jagd, sondern die Beobachtung von Tieren in der freien Wildbahn.

Viele der typischen Tiere sind aktuell vom Aussterben bedroht und die organisierten Safari-Touren führen durch traumhafte Landschaften in riesigen  Naturparks und Wildschutzgebieten .

Wenn du Glück hast, kannst du die „Big Five“ hautnah erleben, dabei handelt es sich um die beliebtesten Tiere, die auf Safaris besonders gerne beobachtet werden (Büffel, Elefanten, Nashörner, Löwen, Geparden).

Die spannendsten Gebiete für Safari-Trips befinden sich nach wie vor in  Afrika:  Kenia, Tansania, Sambia, Simbabwe, Botswana, Namibia und Südafrika sind besonders beliebte Ziele. Aber auch in  Asien  hat sich der Safari Tourismus immer mehr ausgebreitet: Malaysia, Indien, Sri Lanka und Nepal sind beliebte Ziele.

Safari Attire Guidelines

• When getting your safari attire choose beige, khaki, brown and olive for safaris and game walks. They are least disruptive to the animal’s eyes, they are natural and camouflage well.
• Bring a sweater and layers of clothes. It may be chilly on the evening game drives and hot during the day. During the day a tee shirt and shorts are fine.
• What safari attire you pack also depends on the time of year that you will be traveling. During the winter months (May to September), it can be chilly in the mornings and evenings, so it is a good idea to have long trousers and a warm sweater. Summer temperatures can be very hot, so loose clothes in breathable fibers are most comfortable. Simple separates are ideal. They can be layered to add warmth if necessary.
• I always recommend bringing a sweater. And I always have layers even in summer, since the nights can be quite cool due to the high altitude. You are well above sea level in many safari areas of South Africa, Kenya and Tanzania. At night you need to have long sleeved shirts and long pants for protection from mosquitoes and for warmth.
• Again, neutral colored clothing is preferable on safari. Clothing is generally casual, especially at holiday resorts and in the game reserves. However, in some of the more exclusive hotels, men are required to wear jacket and tie for dinner. Black tie for dinner is optional for a journey on The Blue Train and Rovos Rail.

Suggested List Of Safari Attire & Supplies

Here is a suggested list of safari attire & supplies that you can use as a guideline.

• 2 pairs khaki cotton pants (jeans may be too hot)
• 2 pairs sturdy shorts
• 2 long sleeved shirts (for sun protection as well as warmth)
• 1 light sweater or sweatshirt
• 1 lightweight, waterproof windbreaker
• 1 or 2 pair sturdy walking or hiking boots or running shoes
• 3-5 short-sleeved shirts or T-shirts
• 5 changes underwear and socks
• 1 hat with a brim (you need to also protect your ears and neck)
• Note most lodges have a laundry service, complimentary or at a charge
• Also bring insect repellent if camping though most lodges have this
• Small personal first aid kit & if you take prescription medicines bring what you need for the whole trip. They won’t be available on safari.
• Bring a copy of your prescription; it may be available in the cities.
• Repair kit: needle and thread, nylon cord, rip-stop tape
• Plastic packets to compartmentalize items within your travel bag
• For a mobile safari (where you will go from camp to camp and porters set up camp for you in advance) the best luggage is a soft bag, or backpack with an internal frame.
• If part of your itinerary includes light aircraft flights, there are serious weight restrictions. You are usually restricted to 10 or 12kg (22 or 26 lbs), per person, in a soft bag. Storage space in a light aircraft is at a premium, and the pilot may refuse to take on bulky or excessive luggage. You will be charged for the excess.

What you should also bring:

• Sunscreen or block. In Africa the sun is strong nearly year round. So if you are pale a #10 or higher screen will be needed for the first few days; #4 or 5 may be adequate thereafter.
• Aspirin or Tylenol for mild pain or headache
• Moisturizer, lip balm
• Anti diarrhea medicine
• Topical antibiotic, for cuts, bites or sores
• Insect repellent. The principal active ingredient is N, N-Diethyl-Metatoluamide (DEET), an effective repellent will have 75% content or higher. Liquid drops are best for skin application unless your skin is sensitive, sprays can also be used for clothes Sun Sticks are best for lips and nostrils
• Moleskin or Second Skin adhesive pads for blisters

From our experience the following are also great to have:

• Camera and film or memory card. And batteries. Film and batteries can often be obtained at the lodges or rest camps. It will be expensive though.
• Paperback reading and writing material (keep weight at a minimum)
• Bird and animal checklist some lodges have these
• Extra sweater
• Gloves yes, gloves you have a wind chill effect when you are on early morning game drives. This is especially so when in the the back of open 4 x4 s
• Down vest or jacket if you get cold easily

Now that I have done two safari experiences, one at Lion Sands in South Africa and one at Chobe National Park in Botswana , I can now share my travel pearls of what are the best safari clothes for women.

When I first started my search for the ideal safari clothes for women, I thought there has to be more choices than options A and B as seen from the photos above.

I despise khaki (and I’m fair-skinned which does not mix well with skin-toned colors), and I crave feminine, well-fitted, PRACTICAL clothes (that do not look like you are only wearing them for a dramatic Instagram shot).

Is there an option C?

But it took me a lot of purchases and returns later to find the best safari clothes for women. I hope my trial-and-error clothing discoveries can help you as you pack for one of the most epic experiences of your life … the African safari!

I overpack and like to plan for all possible outfits I may need. If you are taking a small plane to your safari destination, you will likely have a weight limit for your luggage.

That means you have to make smart choices of what clothing to bring.

Pants take up a fair amount of space in your luggage, so it’s very important to pick pants that are LIGHTWEIGHT and versatile.

Since I did not have photos of every single safari outfit I wore while in South Africa and Botswana, I took a few photos back home to demonstrate what I wore on our 4-day trip.

I strongly advise wearing pants on your safari drive because of the dust, sun, and bugs.

However, back at the safari lodge, you may want to slip into something clean and comfortable to walk around in.

Bring a hat!

The African sun is strong and hot. If you want to avoid skin cancer and wrinkles, be sun smart. This saved my skin!

One other feature you may want to consider in a safari hat is a chin strap.

It was not very windy when we were in Sabi Sands in South Africa. I can imagine though if you are traveling by jeep on an open plain in Tanzania, there may be more wind that could steal your hat away.

A lot of the blogs will suggest hiking boots. I strongly disagree IF you are only doing game drives.

If you are doing a walking safari, then please bring those heavier mid-rise hiking boots! You may be walking in tall grass, navigating around rocks, or accidentally stepping in lion poop. Sturdy boots are essential for protection and keeping those dainty ankles away from biting insects.

Otherwise, lightweight trail runners work perfectly. They provide a little grip just in case you jump out for a quick walk or to enjoy a sundowner.

Plus, remember those little planes taking you to your safari destination have weight limits. Pack light!

Remember the mornings and evenings in Africa can get chilly. Layers are so important!

My favorite is my Athleta sweatshirt due to its super soft material.

I had brought a few dresses with me because prior to the safari portion of our trip, we had the opportunity to dine at some of the best restaurants in Cape Town including The Test Kitchen!

We had also visited numerous wineries in South Africa wine country , so I did end up bringing a few “dressier” items.

I love wearing dresses, but I found a safari lodge is really not the place people wear them. Everyone was super casual.

Of course, wear what you want, but I would have felt a little out of place wearing a dress.

If you do wear one, a long maxi dress probably makes the most sense to keep your legs protected from mosquitoes.

So instead I opted to wear my Anatomie Luisa Skinny Jean Pant in black with a flowy top and sandals.

Then I just alternated tops since black goes with everything. Remember, there are no tsetse flies in South Africa, but if you are in another country that has them, no black or dark blue!

Sorry, no photo from the safari trip, so I took a photo of the Anatomie pants I wore for dinners at the safari lodge when I got home.

Best Women’s Safari Accessories

Morning safaris can be chilly depending on the time of the year you go. Layer up.

One way to do that is to bring a scarf. Not only does it provide warmth, but it also fends off the sun and dust.

I opted for a multi-colored scarf I could wear with multiple outfits. Orvis usually has some great colorful options.

They reduce eye strain and cut down the glare and help as you are staring into the distant bushes trying to make out if you just saw a leopard.

I did not care for all the khaki boxy clothing options I was discovering when I Googled where to buy safari clothing.

I found the best clothing for a safari is from travel, camping, hiking, and fishing stores. They sell clothing that is performance-performing, lightweight, and durable. My favorite stores include the following:

→    Anatomie

A lot of the safari lodges will offer laundry service. However, if you need to wash an article of clothing by hand, pick something lightweight that dries quickly.

By far, my Anatomie pants are the quickest-drying clothing I have ever encountered.

There have been a few occasions where I have had to wash them in the sink with a little soap, and they literally air-dry within a few hours.

Pretty impressive!

According to Anatomie’s website, they can be dried in under 8 minutes using a hairdryer (but I have not tried that yet).

Wearing breathable fabrics is so important especially when you are sitting in a jeep underneath the scorching African sun!

Cotton, rayon, and linen are very breathable but not moisture-wicking.

Nylon and polyester wick moisture, but the breathability depends on the weave.

Merino wool is not just for winter but is also used for summer clothing because it breathes well and wicks moisture. For me, it’s a little itchy even with the fine weaves, but I have super sensitive skin.

For shirts, specifically look for a vented back with mesh lining, which allows for breathability. Also, another great feature to look for is roll-up sleeve tabs.  

To stay cool, some pants are convertible where you can zip off the pant legs or roll them up and snap them in place.

Most people know what an SPF number means for sunscreen, but they may not be familiar with UPF ratings for fabrics.

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF)   number shows how much UVA + UVB radiation a fabric permits to penetrate your skin.

Look for a UPF 50, which blocks 98% of the UV radiation.  Also, look for shirts where you can pop the collar up. Your neck will thank you.  

For some reason, Americans always think (myself included!) to wear less when it is hot; whereas cultures in Asia and the Middle East tend to cover up in the heat. 

I know it seems counterintuitive to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, but you will be glad you did when you are baking in the sun and fighting off mosquitos and tsetse flies. 

Tsetse flies love black and dark blue, so do not wear those colors while on safari. Otherwise, you can get a nasty bite and possibly African sleeping sickness if the fly has been infected with a parasite.

I asked my safari guides about the tsetse fly while we were in South Africa, and they had no idea what I was talking about. I found out later that is because this fly is not present in South Africa!

If you are in Tanzania or any other country, do not wear dark blue or black clothing/shoes and keep those ankles covered.

South Africa though has NO tsetse flies, so it is okay to wear black and dark blue there. However, dark colors absorb heat, so you may feel hotter if you choose to wear them. 

Never wear camouflage since that type of clothing is identified with the military.

Also, a lot of guides will say not to wear white because it will get dirty quickly.

This may be true in other countries when driving out on wide-open plains, but honestly, I wore a white shirt twice while in Sabi Sands in South Africa and had no problems with getting really dirty. 

I would avoid white though on a walking safari because it does make you stand out. 

When we went to Sabi Sands at the end of September, the weather was VERY cold for the morning safari (I was layered up) and hot for the afternoon safari (I was stripping down).  

If you are like me whose body does not regulate temperature very well, you will be happy you have layers to account for all temperature situations.

You really do NOT have to wear khaki for your safari outfit  UNLESS you are doing a walking safari, and then by all means wear those browns/tans to blend in. 

Most lodges offer laundry services. Take advantage, so then you can pack less. I’ll be honest, I am horrible about “packing light.”

That is one reason why I love Anatomie clothing! I can bring more because it weighs hardly anything.   

Remember you need room for all of that lovely South African wine you are going to bring back! We toured multiple wineries in the Cape Winelands before we headed to Sabi Sand and stored them in wine sleeves in our luggage.

Wine or clothes? Wine always wins.

2 weeks in zambia. I brought 2 prs of these https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/86735?page=vista-camp-pants and lived in them Every Morning!!!! I had to have the neutral color so went with toasted almond. I had to wash a pair once because I forgot to put them in the laundry. and they were dry within a couple of hours. Crazy comfortable, good pockets for extra camera batteries, lens cover, etc. Vista Camp Pants. Love them.

Generell eignet sich für eine Botswana Reise leichte, atmungsaktive Sommerkleidung aus gut waschbarem Material und für kalte Morgenstunden und Nächte, besonders in der kühlen Jahreszeit von Juni bis August, ein dicker Pullover bzw. eine entsprechende Jacke. Packliste: Was sollte man auf eine Safari mitnehmen?

• Das richtige Gepäckstück: Safaris beginnen im Outback, in das man meist mit einer kleinen Cessna fliegt, die Platz für etwa zehn Personen bietet. Das Gepäckstück sollte deshalb nicht mehr als zehn Kilo wiegen und knautschbar sein, wie ein Weekender aus Stoff oder Leder.
• Die passende Kleidung: Für eine Safari-Tour eignet sich eine lange Hose oder Bermuda-Shorts, ein Tank-Top oder T-Shirt, ein Leinenhemd sowie eine dünnere Jacke, die nach dem Zwiebelprinzip einfach an- und ausgezogen werden können. Außerdem brauchst du trittsichere Boots und einen Sonnenhut. Dazu kommen Kleidungsstücke, die in Lodges außerhalb der Safari getragen werden, wie ein schönes Kleid oder ein längerer legerer Rock.
