Kate Middleton Pakistan Royal Tour - Channeling Princess Diana

The Duchess of Cambridge is looking to Princess Diana for style inspiration on her trip to Pakistan.

On the five-day tour with Prince William , Kate Middleton has worn many looks that channel outfits Princess Diana chose for her visits to Pakistan in the Nineties, including pieces by designer brand Catherine Walker, who regularly dressed the late Princess.

When arriving on Oct. 14 at the Pakistani Air Force Base Nur Khan outside of Islamabad, the Duchess wore a traditional Pakistani shalwar kameez dress in ombré blue custom-designed by Catherine Walker. Many on social media have compared the look to that of Princess Diana’s during a visit to Pakistan in 1996, where she wore a light blue, button-up tunic over pants.

As royal tours are geared to strengthen the relationship between the U.K. and its 53 commonwealth nations, the tour of Pakistan will highlight issues like climate change, education, female empowerment and the nation’s youth, among others. The royal couple met with prime minister, Imran Khan, on Oct. 15, who was a friend of Princess Diana.

Kate Middleton's stunning Pakistan tour outfits and their historic meanings

Kate Middleton joined husband Prince William on a five-day royal tour of Pakistan following in the footsteps his mother, the late Princess Diana

  • 19:52, 19 Oct 2019

Prince William walked in the footsteps of his late mother Princess Diana as he toured Pakistan with his wife Kate Middleton on a five day trip this week.

The royal couple dined with Prime Minister Imran Khan, visited children in hospital and went to an iconic mosque as they met with dignitaries and the public alike.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also played cricket, watched traditional dancers and spoke with a glacier expert about climate change.

The trip included visits to Islamabad, Lahore and the countryside in the north with more than 1,000km of travelling.

In a statement released earlier this month, Kensington Palace said: “This is the most complex tour undertaken by The Duke and Duchess to date, given the logistical and security considerations.

“Pakistan hosts one of Britain’s largest overseas networks, with the British High Commission in Islamabad being one of the UK’s largest diplomatic missions in the world.”

A warm welcome

Kate and William were greeted at the Pakistani Air Force Base Nur Khan for the start of their five-day royal tour.

Stepping off in a turquoise bespoke Catherine Walker dress and trousers, Kate was met by a little girl offering her a bouquet of flowers.

Kate's New Look

The Duchess ditched her designer, high-end brands (for her shoes at least) in favour of High Street staple, New Look .

She paired her nude court shoes with trousers by Maheen Khan, a tunic by Catherine Walker, a scarf by Satrangi and earrings by Zeen for a meeting with workers and children at the Margalla Hills in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Kate visit traditional village in northern Pakistan

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a colourful beaded headband she’d been given as a gift by the community.

She apologised for husband William who didn't join in the dancing as they watched a performance in Bumburet, in the Chitral valley.

Kate Middleton gets to grips with Cricket

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a white shalwar kameez - a traditional long tunic and trousers.

The traditional outfit was a great choice for a sporty event, with a giggling Kate getting caught out twice in just six balls.

Prince William was better with the bat this time and managed to hit a six, which was met with a cheers from the crowd and a round of applause from his wife.

Kate and William meet Imran Khan

Former international cricketing star and now the country's Prime Minister, Imran Khan was a friend of William's late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

Diana visited a cancer hospital in Lahore as a guest of Mr Khan and his then wife, Jemima Goldsmith, in May 1997 - just three months before she died.

Kate chose to wear green and white to meet Mr Khan, in a similar look to the one Diana wore more than 20 years ago.

Head bows as the couple visit Mosque

Kate and William visited the Badshahi Mosque as Princess Diana did in 1991.

Just like her late mother-in-law Kate wore green and a matching headscarf for the visit to the holy site.

The royals sat and listened to a reading from the Quran while sat cross-legged on the floor.

Green for the British High Commissioner to Pakistan's reception

The royal couple both donned dark green as they arrived for the reception at the hilltop Pakistan Monument, in a brightly coloured tuk tuk.

Prince William gave a speech at the event aimed at highlighting Pakistani culture, with guests including government officials, business leaders as well as music and film stars.

Casual Kate gets ready to fly home

The duchess can be seen wearing black and white as she arrives at Lahore airport with the duke to take their flight back to Islamabad on Friday.

Heavy storms prevented the RAF Voyager carrying the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the media from landing in Islamabad on Thursday night and they were diverted back to Lahore airport.

Kate Middleton's Pakistan Tour Wardrobe Mixes Tradition and Modernity

kate middleton pakistan visit

The royal tour of Pakistan is in full swing , and Kate Middleton has already given us some memorable looks. After taking her wardrobe in a slightly different direction over the last few months , this week the duchess has gone back to what she knows best, choosing a mix of classic designers and local talents to craft a tour wardrobe that's elegant, timeless, and inspired by local traditions.

From the moment she stepped off the plane, it became clear that Kate's wardrobe for this historic royal tour would take its cue from the location, with the duchess's first look inspired by the shalwar kameez, a traditional combination dress worn in large parts of South and Central Asia. Though the piece was by a British label, Catherine Walker, it definitely suited its surroundings and had many people thinking back to Princess Diana, who wore the same label and took a similar sartorial approach when she visited Pakistan in 1996 .

As the tour continued, Kate stuck to this approach, carefully mixing pieces by local designers like Maheen Khan with custom styles from her most established go-to British designers. She also sprinkled in some affordable items from both locations, including a pair of New Look shoes and jewelry by Zeen, and stunned in an incredible evening gown from one of her favorite designers for an evening reception. Keep reading to take in all her tour looks.

On the first full day of royal engagements, the duchess stepped out in a vibrant periwinkle silk outfit from Pakistani designer Maheen Khan. The look consisted of an embroidered kurta with matching slim trousers, which Kate teamed with a pair of low-heeled shoes by UK high street brand New Look and drop earrings by Zeen. She later switched into a pair of Russell and Bromley flats.

As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Pakistan, Kate stepped off the plane in an outfit by British label Catherine Walker. The bespoke design, which features an ankle-length dress worn over tapered trousers, is inspired by the traditional shalwar kameez worn by both men and women in Pakistan. She accessorized with Rupert Sanderson heels and earrings and a box clutch by Zeen. The look is reminiscent of a similar Catherine Walker outfit worn by Princess Diana on her own visit to Pakistan in 1996 .

Every Single Kate Middleton Look from Her Royal Tour of Pakistan

Author image: lex

ICYMI: Kate Middleton and Prince William embarked on a historic royal tour of Pakistan this week. While there were special engagements and meaningful meetings galore, we couldn’t help but relish in the 37-year-old Duchess of Cambridge’s fashion during the trip. Here, every single look she sported from Islamabad to the foothills of the Himalayas.

kate middleton pakistan tour1

1. Channeling Princess Diana

The Duchess of Cambridge touched down in Pakistan wearing a custom Catherine Walker ensemble that bore a striking similarity to a shalwar kameez (a traditional Pakitstani pants and dress set) that Princess Diana wore during a 1996 visit. Great minds think alike, right?

kate middleton blue kurta pakistan1

2. Pretty In Periwinkle

Middleton donned a periwinkle blue kurta and trousers designed by local designer Maheen Khan for a visit with school children in central Islamabad. She paired the traditional look with nude New Look low block heels and Zeen statement earrings. (Zeen is a Pakistani brand the Duchess of Cambridge has sported several times before and during the tour.) All we can say is periwinkle blue looks good on you, K-Middy.

3. Meeting & Greeting In Kelly Green

The same day, Middleton chatted with officials and met with Pakistan’s prime minister, Imran Khan, while wearing a green Catherine Walker tunic, Maheen Khan trousers, a Satrangi scarf and Zeen earrings. Is it just us or is that tunic kind of putting out Khaleesi vibes?

4. Sequins! Sequins! Sequins!

K-Middy looked every bit the star she is in a sequined green Jenny Packham floor-length gown at a special reception hosted by British high commissioner Thomas Drew. She accessorized the ensemble with gold drop earrings and a megawatt smile. More sequins please, Kate.

5. Your Highness Goes Hiking

The duchess taught a master class in high-low dressing while enjoying a casual hike through the Himalayan foothills. She donned an embroidered cloak and traditional Chitrali hat—both gifted to her upon arrival in the country’s northern region—worn over a leather vest, brown shirt and belted skirt. The best part? We found a less expensive version of her $467 boots for $201 and her Missoma earrings are only $149 .

6. Let Them Eat Birthday Cake

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a surprise appearance at three children’s joint birthday party at the SOS Children’s Village in Lahore. They sang happy birthday, got some compliments from the kiddos and even helped cut the birthday cake. Middleton wore an all-white shalwar kameez crafted by Pakistani textile company Gul Ahmed and a shawl by Maheen Khan along with nude J.Crew Elsie heels ($136) for the celebration.

kate middleton in all white1

7. A Quick Match

Later that day, Middleton pulled her glossy blowout into a ponytail and traded out her heels for Hampton Canvas white sneakers ($37) at the National Cricket Academy. Sure, her outfit is almost the same, but the shoes totally change her entire vibe, right?

8. Honoring Royal History

On the second to last day of their tour, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge followed in Princess Diana’s literal footsteps and visited the Badshahi mosque in Lahore, which the late Princess of Wales visited in 1991. For the occasion, Middleton looked to Maheen Khan once again and selected a stunning turquoise shalwar kameez , a matching headscarf, and bare feet (out of respect).

kate middleton smythson tote1

9. Jetsetter Style

Middleton sported a dressy-casual take on travel style while arriving at the Lahore airport on the final day of the royal tour of Pakistan. Middleton hit the tarmac alongside Prince William wearing an  Elan  kurta, white  Gul Ahmed  trousers, nude  J.Crew Elsie heels  ($136), a  Maheen Khan  scarf, UFO gold drop earrings and a Smythson carryall that’s basically made for travel. Although Middleton’s exact tote is sold out, the Smythson Panama tote ($1,195) is very similar. * Adds to cart immediately*

10. All’s Well That Ends With Puppies

What’s the best way to end a monumental royal tour? With a puppy meet and greet , of course. Middleton and her hubby rounded out their Pakistan trip with a visit to the Army Canine Centre in Islamabad, for which Kate donned a black Beulah London blazer coat with white pants (a bold choice around puppies) and strappy Russell & Bromley flats . Hopefully their pup, Lupo, isn’t the jealous type.

And that’s a wrap. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for another royal tour ASAP.

Prince William and Duchess Kate arrive in Pakistan for their 'most complex tour' ever

Prince William and Duchess Kate of Cambridge arrive at Pakistani Air Force Base Nur Khan on Oct. 14, 2019 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, to start a five-day visit.

Prince William and Duchess Kate of Cambridge arrived in Pakistan late Monday for a five-day official visit described as their "most complex" ever due to major logistical and security issues in a diplomatically touchy region.

They did not take their three children, Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, or Prince Louis, 1, with them.

The couple landed at a Pakistani air force base in Rawalpindi just before 10 p.m. local time, according to video posted on Twitter .

Kate was wearing a traditional shalwar kameez, an ombré turquoise dress and pants by Catherine Walker, plus cream-colored high heels.

This is the couple's first visit to Pakistan, made at the request of the British government. Among others, they will meet with Prime Minister Imran Khan, the former cricket superstar-turned-politician who was a friend of Will's late mother, Princess Diana .

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"This is the most complex tour undertaken by (the duke and duchess) to date, given the logistical and security considerations," according to a Kensington Palace statement issued in advance of the trip. "Pakistan hosts one of Britain’s largest overseas networks, with the British High Commission in Islamabad being one of the United Kingdom's largest diplomatic missions in the world."

Indeed, the young royals, both 37, are arriving in a part of the world already on edge due to soaring tensions in the long-tense relationship between India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed countries. A scientific study released Oct. 2 concluded that as many as 125 million people would die within days if India and Pakistan waged a nuclear war.

The Cambridge visit is intended to "pay respect to the historical relationship" between Britain and Pakistan, a Muslim country that used to be part of the British Empire with India, and from which more than 1 million British citizens today trace their ancestry .

"The Duke and Duchess's program...will largely focus on showcasing Pakistan as it is today – a dynamic, aspirational and forward-looking nation," the palace statement said.

"From the modern, leafy capital Islamabad, to the vibrant city of Lahore, the mountainous countryside in the north, and the rugged border regions to the west, the visit will span over (620 miles), and will take in Pakistan’s rich culture, its diverse communities, and its beautiful landscapes."

Will and Kate are embarking on this tour at a moment when public esteem for them is high in Britain, in contrast to the woes experienced in recent months by Prince Harry and his biracial American wife, Duchess Meghan of Sussex, who just returned from a 10-day tour of southern Africa with their baby, Archie.

The Sussex trip was a big success, helping to ameliorate the mockery and criticism of them in the British tabloids for allegedly being too obsessed with privacy, too heedless of royal protocol, too extravagant in their spending, and hypocritical for taking private jets while warning against climate change.

But the good vibes of the trip were overtaken before it ended by the bitter fallout from their decision to file lawsuits against specific tabloid publications alleging invasion of privacy, copyright infringement  and phone hacking.

It didn't help that Harry issued an  overwrought statement attacking the tabloids for "malicious," "ruthless" and "relentless propaganda" coverage of Meghan, whose "suffering" he compared to that endured by Princess Diana before she died in a Paris car crash in 1997.

None of that has been a problem for the Duchess of Cambridge, the English-born former Kate Middleton, who has been treated to generally positive media coverage since she married Will in 2011, and is widely admired.

As with the Sussex tour, when Harry walked in Diana's footsteps in Angola to pay tribute to her anti-landmine campaign there in 1997, the Cambridges will be visiting a country that was special to Diana, who made three visits there in the 1990s. In fact, Pakistan was the destination of her first official solo royal trip, in 1991.

She also made a private two-day visit to Lahore in 1996 to see her friends, Khan and his then-wife, Jemima Goldsmith, and in 1997 to open a cancer hospital with the Khans.

At least one Pakistani on Twitter spotted some interest in the royal visit.

"Looks like Pakistan is ready for #RoyalVisitPakistan Spotted this in #Rawalpindi a few hours ago," posted Shahrukh over a picture of a neon-lit sign with the Pakistani and British flags.

At the time the Cambridge trip was announced in June, the High Commissioner for Pakistan to the United Kingdom, Mohammad Nafees Zakaria, said Pakistanis will "warmly welcome" the royal couple , noting that people there still fondly recall the visits of William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1961 and 1997.

“The upcoming royal visit is a reflection of the importance the United Kingdom attaches to its relations with Pakistan," Zakaria said. "The two countries enjoy historical links which both sides wish to strengthen further.”

Will and Kate have been carefully preparing for the trip . Two weeks ago, they went to a special event hosted by Prince Shah Karim Al Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, at his Aga Khan Centre in London, to get a taste of modern Pakistani culture and to meet a range of Pakistanis in Britain, including musicians, chefs and artists within the Pakistani diaspora community.

Ever attuned to the sensibilities of her hosts, Kate wore a flowing floor-length emerald green silk dress (the Pakistani flag is green with a white crescent moon and star in the center) by ARoss Girl x Soler .

The overarching themes of the Pakistan trip in some ways echo those of the Sussex Africa tour: Access to quality education, empowerment for girls and young women, conservation, and communities' efforts to respond and adapt to climate change.

They also will spend time exploring the complex security picture in Pakistan, meeting with British and Pakistan military personnel who are sharing expertise to improve security.

As usual with their previous overseas visits (all of which were smashing successes), Will and Kate want to meet as many Pakistanis as possible, including children and youths, government and business leaders, charity activists, conservationists, and famous cultural figures and sports stars.

"The U.K.’s links with Pakistan are extensive, and Their Royal Highnesses are looking forward to building a lasting friendship with the people of Pakistan," the Kensington Palace statement said.

Britain's prince william, kate middleton to visit pakistan from october 14-18.

kate middleton pakistan visit

Britain's Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton will pay an official visit to Pakistan from October 14-18, the Kensington Palace announced on Friday.

Before their visit, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend a special event at the Aga Khan Centre in London on October 2, which will be hosted by Prince Karim Aga Khan.

William and Kate's visit to Pakistan was first announced in late June. It is the first royal trip to the country in more than a decade.

The royal couple’s visit, requested by Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, shows London’s renewed interest in Pakistan.

Pakistan had welcomed the announcement of the visit, with its ambassador to Britain Nafees Zakaria tweeting: “Upcoming Royal visit reflects the importance UK attaches to Pakistan. Both countries enjoy historical links and wish to strengthen them further.”

The visit comes 13 years after Charles and Camilla — the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwell — toured the country in 2006.

But Pakistan still vividly remembers the late Princess Diana’s visit in 1996.

She travelled to Islamabad, scenic northern areas and Lahore, where she was welcomed by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, the current prime minister.

Diana — who was friends with Imran Khan — also attended a fundraising event of his Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Britain is home to more than a million people of Pakistani origin, making it the largest Pakistani diaspora in Europe.

Bilateral trade was worth almost $4 billion in 2017, with the UK currently Pakistan’s third-largest source of foreign investment after China and the Netherlands, according to Britain’s Department of International Trade.

British Airways also landed back in Pakistan earlier this year, in a major vote of confidence from a Western airline, after suspending operations due to security fears over a decade ago.

Prince William and Kate Middleton's Visit to Pakistan Will Be Their "Most Complex” Overseas Tour to Date

The Cambridges will visit the south Asian country later this month.

prince william kate middleton

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will undertake their “most complex” overseas tour to date when they visit Pakistan later this month, a spokesperson has said.

In a statement, William and Kate’s Communications Secretary said that the couple’s program will “pay respect to the historical relationship between Britain and Pakistan,” but “largely focus on showcasing Pakistan as it is today–a dynamic, aspirational and forward-looking nation.”

He added, “This is the most complex tour undertaken by The Duke and Duchess to date, given the logistical and security considerations.”

The trip is being carried out at the request of the U.K.’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office which currently advises the public against travel to certain parts of the country. No specific information about the couple’s itinerary has been revealed, but a spokesman said the visit will “span over 1000 km, and will take in Pakistan’s rich culture, its diverse communities, and its beautiful landscapes.”

According to a statement released today by Kensington Palace, the tour will see the couple visit organizations focusing on young people and education, and particularly girls and young women. “The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to spending time meeting young Pakistanis, and hearing more about their aspirations for the future,” a spokesman said.

They will also hear about the country’s efforts to respond to climate change as well as learning about the “complex security picture” in Pakistan. Kensington Palace highlighted how Pakistan hosts one of Britain’s largest overseas networks, with the British High Commission in Islamabad being one of the U.K.’s largest diplomatic missions in the world.

Previously, the Queen visited the country in 1961 and 1997, and Princess Diana traveled there on a solo trip in 1991. When the Cambridges’ visit was first announced in June this year, the High Commissioner for Pakistan to the United Kingdom, Mohammad Nafees Zakaria, said the people of Pakistan “warmly welcome the announcement.”

He continued, saying that they "still cherish and fondly recall" the visits by the Queen and described the upcoming trip as a “reflection of the importance the United Kingdom attaches to its relations with Pakistan. The two countries enjoy historical links which both sides wish to strengthen further.”

According to The Express , it's believed that she's now eager to visit the French capital to catch a glimpse of the impressive sporting action.

Kate is an avid sports fan and is a regular on the sidelines. She has long thrown her support behind British sporting teams and was notably a firm fixture at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Alongside Prince Harry and Prince William , Kate was spotted cheering at a plethora of events including eventing, cycling and sailing.

The mother-of-three is currently enjoying the school summer holidays with her husband Prince William and their three children Prince George , 11, Princess Charlotte , nine and six-year-old Prince Louis.

Aside from stepping out to attend Wimbledon and Trooping the Colour, Kate has been keeping a low profile as she continues her treatment. The royal, who shared news of her diagnosis in March, shared a personal update in June ahead of her Trooping appearance.

Opening up, she shared how she is "making good progress" and that she has "good days and bad days".

She continued: "On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.

"My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months. On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.

She finished by adding: "I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal.

"Thank you so much for your continued understanding, and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me."

Kate's recent appearances should not be interpreted as a return to work or her resuming a full schedule of public engagements. It is expected that her future appearances will be decided on a case-by-case basis, depending on how she is feeling nearer the time.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Will Visit Pakistan This Fall

The news comes after the announcement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's upcoming tour of Africa

Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to visit Pakistan in the fall, Kensington Palace announced on Saturday.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will undertake an official visit to Pakistan at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office,” a statement from the palace read. “The visit will take place in the Autumn.”

It’s unclear if the couple’s children — Prince George , 5, Princess Charlotte , 4, and Prince Louis , 1 — will accompany the couple, both 37, on the visit.

The trip will mark Kate and William’s first visit to Pakistan, though the royals visited the neighboring country of India in 2016.

William’s mother Princess Diana visited the country, which is a member of the Commonwealth, various times throughout her life, and Queen Elizabeth made the trip in 1997.

The news comes days after the announcement that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be embarking on a tour of Africa , also in the fall.

They will visit the country of South Africa, with Harry also making stops in Malawi and Angola. He’ll also do a “short working visit in Botswana en route to the other countries,” according to a post on the couple’s Instagram account.

“The Duke and Duchess are really looking forward to meeting so many of you on the ground and continuing to raise awareness of the high impact work local communities are doing across the commonwealth and beyond,” the couple wrote on Instagram.

In the post, they also hinted that son Archie , born on May 6, will be coming along: “This will be their first official tour as a family!”

Earlier this month, Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, officially split from The Royal Foundation , their former joint charity with Kate and William.

The Royal Foundation will continue without the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s involvement, the palace announced in a statement, saying, “They are especially proud to have established a charity that has had, and will continue to have, significant long-lasting impact, changing lives for the better.”

A source previously told PEOPLE that the separation is a “natural progression” and not a breakup .
