What's the hype behind Uniworld River Cruises? A 2024 review

Booking a cruise is similar to an investment in your travel experiences. It might be worth it, and it might not. Wondering if Uniworld River Cruises are one of the worthy cruises to book for your travels? Keep reading to find everything to know for you to make your decision.

are uniworld cruises good

Going on a cruise of some kind is probably on most people's bucket lists. For a good reason too! Who doesn't want to be traveling while sipping margaritas aboard a large floating luxury ship? With cruises taking it further enhancing entertainment onboard, you can now watch movies, go on waterslides, or even gamble in casinos aboard some cruises.

Of course, it's no surprise that cruise lines are some of the most expensive travel experiences out there.

How do you know which cruises are worth the money? It can be hard deciding on which cruise to book with. After all, you're spending a considerable amount of money on a travel experience that you're not sure will deliver.

If you're more into yachts, make sure you check out our review of  The Yacht Week !

Today, we'll be reviewing Uniworld River Cruises, one of the more popular river cruises operating mainly in Europe but having cruises worldwide. Uniworld River Cruises have truly made a name for themselves in the world of luxurious voyages. They're voted the world's best river cruise line in  Travel + Leisure's global awards .

Who Owns Uniworld?

Uniworld River Cruises is as American as possible. Acquired by The Travel Corporation (TTC), a company owning 40 award-winning international travel-related companies, its acclaimed position doesn't come off as a surprise. A prized possession of the power couple – Stanley Tollman and Beatrice Tollman, TTC has been handed down over four generations of this family and continues to live up to its reputation.

No need to fret about "what could you possibly do for an entire month on a cruise?" because the onboard activities and cultural enrichments will keep you busy.

Life on a cruise.

The gym and fitness classes keep active travelers in shape. Let's not forget something as essential to us as oxygen nowadays, Wi-Fi! The signals will be available no matter which corner of the ship you walk towards.

That's the onboard amenities; what about onshore, then? Travelers get a tour guide included in the package who knows every nook and cranny of the destinations. They'll definitely help you explore the spot to its fullest. While keeping the energy high, the tours also come with the option of an onshore bicycle trip.

Has Uniworld Cancelled Any River Cruises?

Due to the prevalent pandemic and worldwide lockdown policies, the cruise line had to suspend their tours indefinitely in 2021. They canceled the pre-scheduled tours starting from March 2020 to June 2021.

When will Uniworld River Cruises Resume?

The company had already resumed its tours in June 2021 when countries started to reopen their borders for international traveling. Uniworld River Cruises adopted a wait-and-see tactic once the operations had resumed, too, in case of another episode of rising in COVID cases and lockdowns.

For now, rest assured that Uniworld is currently operating to its full potential. With more and more countries going back to the way things were, the cruise line is ready to embark on multiple journeys in 2022.

How Much Do Uniworld River Cruises Cost?

You may find several estimated quotes on the internet for Uniworld river cruises. Still, it's best to get an exact quote from the team.

There's no set price for these cruises, and it depends on the time of the year, destination, number of days, add-on amenities, and the ship, to name a few factors. You'll find packages as low as $1799 and as high as up to $20,000!

To save a few bucks, you can visit their ' current offers'  section and browse through the sales on upcoming trips.

Are Uniworld River Cruises worth it?

A cruise line that's luxurious as ever, and reviews that speak the same about it. Uniworld has an established name in the industry. It never tires of the high praises it attains from its travelers.

Safe to say, only a handful of people rated it anything below a 4-star service, and those, too, mainly because of the canceled trips during peak COVID season. Besides that, occasional reviews added upon the unfriendly behavior of the staff. Overall, we found the reviews of their services to be friendly, professional, and above most people's expectations!

Uniworld Reviews: What To Expect During Your River Cruising

If you’ve ever taken an interest in going on a river cruise, one of the standout providers may have been Uniworld. Offering boutique river cruises across a huge range of destinations, Uniworld boasts outstanding service and a luxury experience for all its guests.

are uniworld cruises good

With 18 gorgeous river cruise ships, each built to blend seamlessly with the region they travel to, and a selection of great itineraries across a range of amazing destinations worldwide, Uniworld River Cruises is a major operator within the river cruising industry. Founded in 1976, this California-based cruise company has a strong presence not only in North America but for those who enjoy cruising all around the globe. They have a strong customer base and strive to provide new and exciting cruises to their long-time customers.

Whether you’re new to river cruising, or just checking out Uniworld as an option for a future river cruise, you may be wondering what to expect when traveling with them. To help you out, we’ve done the legwork for you, researching forums, review boards, and various cruise websites to bring you everything people love (and some of the things they don’t) about traveling with Uniworld, so you can get all the information you need before you book that dream getaway.

Uniworld River Cruises Cost

Whilst at first blush, Uniworld cruises seem to be quite pricey, they’re actually very good value.

Uniworld cruises are all-inclusive and cost, on average, somewhere between $2000 and $4000 per person, depending on the length of the cruise, the itinerary, and the time of year you plan on traveling. Having everything included for this price actually makes them excellent value as a provider of boutique luxury cruises, as can they include everything from flights to overseas transfers to personal butler service, alongside unlimited premium beverages and inclusion of all gratuities, three splendid meals a day and even Uniworld exclusive personalized excursions.

are uniworld cruises good

If you’re looking to keep costs low, however, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind. Holiday and themed cruises, for example, tend to be a bit pricier than a standard river cruise. So if you’re not set on going on a themed river cruise, it’s much better to keep costs low by going on a standard Uniworld River Cruise.

Uniworld Cruise Experience

Uniworld ships and itineraries are designed to truly blend in with the rivers they are designed for. From stunning French interiors aboard the S.S. Joie de Vivre which cruises the stunning rivers of France, to the iconic hand-painted murals aboard the Ganges Voyager II which cruises through India.

There’s a great range of activities and entertainment options available onboard, as well as a great range of dining options to enjoy.

Uniworld is a great option if you’re planning on staying a little longer in a certain city either before your cruise commences, or at the end of your trip. This is because the company allows you to truly make the most of your getaway by offering guests the option to extend their getaway by adding accommodation for a few extra days in a variety of amazing historic cities all across the world.

Be sure to adhere to the onboard dress code in all areas of the ship.

Uniworld Cruise Food & Drink Review

As Uniworld fares are all-inclusive, guests can enjoy a great range of food and drink options aboard their ship at no extra cost! Uniworld offers unlimited drinks including fine regional beers and wines, as well as handcrafted cocktails made with premium spirits.

are uniworld cruises good

Another great feature aboard Uniworld is that menus are inspired by the region you’re visiting and prepared with local ingredients. Although menus are pre-planned to match up with the destinations, they can still be adapted to suit dietary requirements or preferences, so long as you provide enough notice before sailing.

Uniworld Cruise Entertainment & Onboard Activities

Since river cruises only travel short distances between destinations, guests typically spend most of their time on land exploring, eating on board, or sleeping, so there isn’t much need for onboard activities. That said, there’s a great selection of onboard libraries and lounges across the fleet, where guests can relax with a good book or chat with fellow guests on the journeys between destinations.

After arriving at a new destination, guess can enjoy guided walking tours, try some local cuisine, or visit local landmarks.

If you’re planning on traveling with Uniworld, you may be pleased to know that you’ll get the opportunity to enjoy exclusive access to a range of museums and popular landmarks without the regular tourist crowds, thanks to their after-hours tours. There’s also a great variety of fun nights out to be had in the cities boasting great nightlife scenes, such as Prague and Amsterdam, which are pre-planned by the company to ensure everyone has a great time whilst staying safe.

Whilst Uniworld only offers river cruises, most of which are more tailored towards the enjoyment of adults, both young and old , Uniworld also offers a variety of family cruises, which place emphasis on catering to a great getaway filled with family fun. With the family-friendly cruises, you can enjoy movie nights, game rooms, complimentary bike hire for use on land, and even kids menus at the dinner tables.

are uniworld cruises good

Family cruises also offer onboard cultural activities aimed at young cruisers and teenagers, such as classes where they can learn to cook dishes or learn the language of the local region they are traveling in.

What Guests Liked Most About Cruising With Uniworld

Reviews for Uniworld are generally very good, with an overall rating of 4.3 / 5 on CruiseCritic.

Guests generally enjoyed experiencing regions fully and surrounding themselves with like-minded people on their vacation. Many reviewers stated that their experience traveling with Uniworld was fabulous and amazing and that the guided tours taken with Uniworld whilst on-shore were fun, relaxed, and informative.

Guests commented on how attentive the staff were, with fast, friendly, and professional service from both the wait staff and the bar staff.

What Guests Didn’t Like About Cruising With Uniworld

As most of the reviews for Uniworld are very good, there are only a few issues that seem to be a common theme with guests.

A lot of guests were unhappy with how much travel time was done onboard a bus, be this to and from activities and excursions, or even to meet the boat at a port if the ship was delayed.

Some guests also complained of large groups onboard dominating the limited spaces on the excursions, however, this is not a common issue.

What people say about us

We worked with Mike to plan our perfect honeymoon in Greece — he was amazing the whole way through and put together a trip we will cherish for our lifetime.

He was thoughtful with our suggestions, and provided some of his own without every pushing us. He stayed within our budgetary means but made it feel like we had a budget twice the size.

Dan and Michelle were such a joy to work with! They really made our trip and cruise successful. Based on our needs they were able to help us identify and schedule what side trips and activities would best suit our interests.

After this trip I will be using a travel agent for future vacations…just can’t wait for the next one they help us plan!

Honeymoon Always has been fantastic- our trips were 1000% better because of their help. The first time we used them we wanted to have a fun trip with some cultural experiences, good food, not too packed, and for a good price. It was fantastic and now we've used them for several trips in Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. Each trip was so different but they were able to make each one special and unique to our needs.

This Is One of the Most Luxurious Cruises on the Nile River — With Excellent Food, Excursions to the Famed Pyramids, and Just 84 Passengers

Here's what it's like to sail on the Sphinx, operated by Uniworld, one of the best river-cruise lines.

are uniworld cruises good

The Staterooms

Bars and restaurants, where the ship sails, shore excursions, amenities and entertainment.

Courtesy of Uniworld

We came to Egypt for the temples. To see Dendera, Karnak, and Kom Ombo, where the ancient columns and obelisks, thousands of years old, still bear traces of paint. To learn about the pharaohs and their gods, and how ancient civilizations were shaped by the Nile River.

We would see them over the course of a week aboard the 84-passenger Sphinx , one of the newest and most luxurious vessels on the river. Operated by Uniworld Boutique River Cruises , one of the best river-cruise lines , the ship was the “way in” for our family of three. My husband, Rob, and I both fell for Luxor Temple, which we had almost to ourselves during an after-hours tour under the moonlight. For our eight-year-old son, Bobby, a memorable moment was seeing King Tut’s wizened and fragile mummy up close, during our time in the Valley of the Kings. Equally impressive were a series of vivid stars, traced on an electric blue ceiling, in the tomb of Ramses III.

But there was more — much more — beyond the monuments that made this trip so compelling.

One morning, the Sphinx docked in the southern port city of Aswan, renowned for its Philae temple complex, which dates to the 7th century BCE, and the Old Cataract Hotel, frequented by Agatha Christie. With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, our family set out on a small motorboat with just four other guests — the rest were apparently content to stay behind, cocooned in their plush, air-conditioned cabins.

EMLI BENDIXEN

We had been sailing the Nile for several days, and the riverbanks, as seen from the Sphinx ’s relaxing top deck, had begun to take on a distant, rhythmic quality: mountains, brick homes, children splashing along the shore. More mountains, a field or two, perhaps a high-speed train, all brushstrokes on a painting. This ride, at eye-level, felt more alive: giant boulders lay interspersed among swaying bamboo grass, tempting me to reach out and touch. The sky was unusually cloudy, a relief given the stifling heat.

After weaving in and around several channels, we arrived at an impossibly tall sand dune, sharp-edged like a blade, with a small seating area at the base. “We get to climb that?” Bobby asked. “Cool!” No sooner had we disembarked than the sky turned a disconcerting, Fanta orange; we took shelter from the sandstorm in a nearby home, where the owner proudly showed off his pet crocodile. (Needless to say, that’s not part of the regular itinerary.)

Twenty minutes later, the storm had passed. Rob powered up the sand, slow and steady, with Bobby in tow. I waited at the base, iPhone at the ready for photos. The not-so-graceful pair slid down on their boards to shrieks of delight, falling into the sun-baked earth. Sweaty, tired, and covered in a thin layer of grime, we all were relieved to return to the ship, where fresh juice awaited us, as it did after every excursion, thanks to the ever-attentive crew.

Indeed, one could argue you choose the Sphinx , one of two Uniworld vessels in Egypt, for the intuitive, faultless staff. Its 58 crew members, all of whom were male, following local custom, looked after us with great care. (Because our end-of-season sailing wasn’t full, we enjoyed close to a 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio.)

In addition to the regular crew, there were three Egyptolgists, all expert historians, on our sailing, to guide us through the monuments, museums, and temples. We met our assigned Egyptologist, Akram Abdelmonein, in Cairo, before even boarding the ship. He walked us through the grand halls of the original Egyptian Museum, a 1902 landmark that’s home to some 170,000 artifacts. Abdelmonein never left our group of 15, even flying with us to the grand, rock-carved temples of Abu Simbel, near the Sudanese border. He answered every question with frankness and reassured Bobby that no question was too small — the sign, in my opinion, of a truly great guide.

Here is a closer look at what you can expect — on and off the ship — when you travel to Egypt on the Sphinx.

  • The 42-cabin, 84-passenger Sphinx has colorful decor that reflects local architecture and design.
  • Though there's only one restaurant on board, the food is excellent — and the staff get to know your preferences immediately.
  • Most excursions, led by an expert Egyptologist, are included in the price of the cruise. You’ll see the greatest hits of Egyptian monuments and temples, including Luxor, Karnak, Abu Simbel, Dendera, and the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Launched in 2021, the Sphinx stands out for its Egyptian craftsmanship and vivid colors. Framed, black and white photos and drawings of ancient ruins line the hallways and the bedrooms; Arabic coffee pots rest on small inlaid stools; brass lamps adorn the bedside tables; and the guest room palette embraces royal blues and vivid golds, with carved, blonde-wood ceilings to give an even greater sense of height.

The 42 cabins, spread across three decks, range from a French Balcony (233 square feet) to a Royal Suite (495 square feet). All category types have French balconies, or windows that lower to allow in fresh air, but I never once considered opening mine, for fear of the heat and bugs.

My family and I traveled in a 430-square-foot Grand Suite, on the sixth, or “Karnak,” deck, which had a small vanity, generous closets, and a well-appointed seating area, with a sofa, coffee table, and two chairs. Like our dining table back home, it became our “stash” pad, where we would place our leftover gear — in this case, tickets, souvenirs, and whisper devices — upon returning from an excursion. The spacious, tan-and-blue tiled bathroom came with a well-pressurized shower and a deep soaking tub: a true splurge-worthy perk for resting weary feet. The Grand Suites, of which there are 20, are the most popular category; we found it offered more than enough space for our group of three. (It’s worth noting that children must be at least four years old to sail in Egypt.) The wonderful housekeeping team came twice daily to freshen the room.

There is one main dining room on the Sphinx , located on the fourth, or “Luxor,” deck, the lowest level accessible to passengers. Intricate, pebble-tiled floors, wooden columns, carved chairs, and lamp-lit tables give the room a grand, formal feeling. Yet the area is not so stuffy that passengers can’t dress casually, join other groups at the large tables, and make new friends. Every meal we had was plentiful, fresh, and excellent; I’ll never forget tasting roasted Nile perch for the first time, filetted right in front of me by one of the helpful culinary team. Another highlight: the chance to sample okra soup and hawawshi, pita stuffed with minced meat, on “Egyptian street food day.”

Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style daily. At breakfast, Bobby made a beeline for the fresh watermelon, while I opted for the homemade pastries, everything from chocolate croissants to delicate bars, sugar-flecked and crisp. Our dining room servers, Mosan and Omar, quickly began to know our favorite drink orders — Turkish coffee for Rob and I; milk for Bobby — so that they were ready within minutes of walking in.

At lunch, the cold salad and bread station was a gem, with fattoush, tabouleh, cheeses, multiple styles of olives, and house dressings; the hot section showcased a grill option (lamb, chicken, fish) and several entrées, everything from biryani to fresh pasta. Mosan often surprised us with a local Egyptian dish to share at the table — one particular favorite was ful medames, or stewed fava beans — before we even stood up to fill our plates.

Dinner was always a la carte, with a choice of a starter, soup, entrée, and dessert. Some of my favorite dishes included the chicken shawarma and saffron marinated sole; we often paired our entrées with house Egyptian wines, which accompanied every meal.

The light-filled main bar and lounge, on the fifth, or “Dendera,” deck was the gathering place for an evening cocktail; it was also the place for “port talks” and other lectures about upcoming points of interest. The ship’s sun deck also has drink service and the occasional light bite, such as a champagne breakfast or afternoon tea.

The Sphinx, like its sibling ship, River Tosca , operates eight-day, round trips from Luxor. Passengers must first fly to Cairo, where there is an optional one- or two-night stay in the Egyptian capital, including things like visits to the Egyptian Museum, the Alabaster Mosque, the Citadel of Salah al-Din, and the Pyramids of Giza all included. (The long-awaited, much-discussed Grand Egyptian Museum was unfortunately closed at the time of our visit, though it is on many Uniworld itineraries.)

On my trip, all the Sphinx passengers stayed at the luxe Four Seasons Cairo at Nile Plaza, a centrally located option with a lovely, shaded pool deck; an excellent Lebanese restaurant; and recently renovated rooms, all light-filled and stocked with books on Egyptian history.

After a short, one-hour and forty minute flight south to Luxor, we were bused to the Sphinx , our home for the week. Ports of call on all Uniworld voyages include Dendera, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Esna, and Aswan. Most temples and monuments were easily accessed either on foot or with a short bus ride; visiting the temples at Abu Simbel requires a one-hour flight from Aswan International Airport to Abu Simbel Airport. This excellent excursion is offered for an extra fee, but I highly recommend it.

Uniworld includes one or two shore excursions, depending on the day, in the price of the cruise. Many of them depart quite early, to beat the heat; on my trip, that meant departing as early as 7 a.m.

On our first big outing, however, there was no avoiding it. Shortly after landing in Luxor, we were bused to the nearby Karnak Temple, an incredible, open air complex that’s arguably the largest religious site in the world, dating to roughly 2,000 BCE. It’s rightly famous for its stunning ramshead sphinxes and the columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall, but it was also packed with tourists from all over the world. In spite of the heat and crowds, Abdelmonnein, our thoughtful Egyptologist, shared stories of pharaohs and set the stage for the various Egyptian dynasties we’d be exploring during our trip.

The next morning, when we arrived at the Dendera Temple Complex, the contrast was remarkable. Our Uniworld group was the first into the site, which is dominated by the Temple of Hathor, dating to 54 BCE. “Imagine hundreds of Egyptians coming to this place,” said Abdelmonein, as we wandered the halls dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love and fertility. There were no other selfie-taking tourists; it was just us and the birds and a few stray cats. With no crowds to jostle us, we could take our time inspecting the thousands of hieroglyphics that adorn the walls and ceilings. Abdelmonein even pointed out a rare depiction of Cleopatra and Caesarion, her son with Julius Caesar.

Later on in the cruise, we enjoyed the temple of Kom Ombo, which is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Horus, the falcon god. It’s home to a small museum filled with mummified crocs — creepy, and very cool. We also visited Abu Simbel, by way of a round-trip flight, organized at extra expense by Uniworld. The journey was worth it to see the larger than life statues of Ramses II — and to marvel at the fact that this 3,000-year-old monument was saved by preservationists during the 1960s, when it was moved during the construction of the Aswan Dam .

Don’t choose the Sphinx — or any Egypt sailing, for that matter — if your vision of a cruise vacation includes multiple bars, water slides, and nightclubs. Like other ships on the Nile, this one is beautiful but compact, with a few key amenities, such as a small top-deck pool with sun loungers. Much to our surprise, my family and I were often the only people cooling off at the pool, whether after a morning excursion or a leisurely lunch.

The spa is really more like a massage room, though the treatments I had were excellent and affordable.

At night, local musicians and dancers would sometimes perform for us, as well as the Uniworld crew — one highlight of my trip was seeing one of my favorite bartenders, Ashraf, moving on the dance floor. But most evenings were relatively quiet, with things winding down by about 10 p.m., in preparation for whatever adventures the next day might hold.

Douro River Cruise: Our Review of Uniworld’s Trip Through Portugal’s Top Wine Region

What to expect on a river cruise through Portugal's most storied wine region

By Heidi Sarna

September 6, 2024

Heidi Sarna is the co-founder of QuirkyCruise.com , a guide to small-ship cruising .

The Douro River starts in north-central Spain and zigzags some 500 miles into Portugal before eventually reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, the curving, rock-lined river cuts through a landscape characterized, above all, by its connection to generations of winemaking.

A cruise along the Douro provides not only a chance to encounter medieval fortress towns and sample the region's renowned port and other wines, but also to appreciate, as you travel along the waterway, the sheer beauty of the surrounding hillsides covered in a patchwork quilt of vineyards along with cork oak, olive, and fig trees.

I recently spent a week aboard Uniworld’s  SS São Gabriel , a luxury ship launched in 2021 for the exclusive purpose of cruising Portugal’s Douro River Valley. Journeying 250 miles round trip from Porto, the ship accommodates up to 100 passengers and is just 262 feet long. To fit into the five lock chambers along the route, all ships on the river are about half the length of boats plying other European waterways like the Rhine and Danube.

It's easy to make friends among the small contingent of passengers as you take day tours or mingle in the ship's lounge at happy hour and at mealtime in the open-seating restaurant. Among the most high-end river cruise lines operating in Europe, Uniworld offers all-inclusive fares covering meals, drinks, gratuities, and daily excursions.

Douro River Cruise Excursions: Vineyards, Medieval Towns, and So Much Port

Armed with personal VOX listening devices, Uniworld passengers on walking tours go on included visits to vineyards, museums, and medieval cathedrals. Some guides are Uniworld tour staff members—our cruise manager, Ricardo, was a passionate and knowledgeable lecturer, superior to his more junior colleagues—while at other times local guides do the honors.

Certain excursions start within strolling distance of the ship, though most require a 20- to 60-minute bus ride on winding roads with breathtaking views of the countryside.

The overriding themes of onshore activities: Portugal’s winemaking history and the legacies of ancient Romans, Moors, and Jews. I greatly enjoyed the Douro Museum , housed in an 18th-century restored warehouse in Régua . The experience includes an illuminating lecture from a local winemaker and a fascinating video showing old footage of the Douro before the locks were built in the 1930s. Back then, the landscape would get superdry in the summer and flood wildly at other times.

The film shows grape pickers carrying huge 100-pound baskets on their backs in the scorching heat, breaking up shale rock by hand to make the soil habitable for grape growing, and loading traditional wooden rabelo cargo boats with wine to transport from the vineyards to the coast.

Also on the itinerary is a visit to the ornate Our Lady of Remedies chapel, set beautifully at the top of a long Baroque staircase in Lamego . Another we day we traveled to Castelo Rodrigo , a medieval fortress town in the hills above the river valley.

On a sweltering day later in the week, guides led us through the hillside vineyards of the Croft wine estate Quinta de São Luiz . A bus tour across the border to Salamanca, Spain , involves a guided stroll through the old quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the 18th-century Plaza Mayor and the massive New Cathedral dating from the 1500s.

With some free time to spare, climb the 200 steps of Salamanca's Scala Coeli (“Stairway to Heaven” in Latin) at the 17th-century Jesuit church and school for sweeping views of the city.

Just about every tour during the cruise includes an opportunity to taste Portuguese wine—often port. Pace yourself or you might get tired of the sweet fortified stuff after a few days.

Moored in pretty Porto for half a day at the beginning and end of the cruise, you'll have time to explore that coastal city, too. Among the highlights are the winding, cobbled streets of the historic Ribeira district, the famous golden interior of the Church of São Francisco , and the grand São Bento train station.

While in the city, Uniworld's São Gabriel ship occupies a prime river-facing spot (not sandwiched between other riverboats) with views of Porto's red-tiled roofs, fortress-like Porto Cathedral , and double-deck Dom Luís I Bridge .

Uniworld's Douro River Cruise: Onboard Amenities, Meals, Staterooms, and Service

Uniworld’s décor is chic, with lots of local touches. The São Gabriel has flooring inspired by Portugal’s famous ceramic tiles, polished wood in chevron patterns, and seating with rich fabrics.

Elegant staterooms are designed in shades of teal and champagne with light woods. You'll find tufted headboards, fresh flowers, and Portuguese tiles worked into the marble-clad bathrooms.

Suites on Deck 3 are spacious—ours had 220 square feet—while cabins on the two lower decks are a compact 156 square feet apiece.

are uniworld cruises good

A pair of butlers are on hand to indulge suite guests’ whims and fancies—say, pre-dinner prosecco and potato chips delivered to your room—but even if you're staying elsewhere on the ship you can expect efficient and friendly service from the mostly Protuguese staff (shout-out again to our cruise manager, Ricardo, who wears many hats with aplomb).

The ship's bright, welcoming restaurant features open seating with tables for two, four, and six. Owing in part to the large windows in the space, the dining area doesn't feel as cramped as on some other riverboats.

Breakfast and lunch are served at the buffet. At midday, standouts include a delicious salad with shrimp and pineapple, another salad combining tropical fruit with hearts of palm, and Portugal's beloved  francesinha sandwich (thick white bread with ham, sausage, steak, and lots of cheese). At dinner, try the cod with chickpeas and turnips.

During lunch and dinner, choose from two different easy-drinking red and white wines from Douro Valley winemakers such as Assobio and Porrais. On our cruise, the ship’s sommelier went from table to table, enthusiastically detailing each bottle's attributes.

Evening entertainment in the ship's lounge may range from flamenco (which isn't Portuguese) to the melancholy folk music known as fado (which very much is). A '70s-themed dance party one evening was popular on my cruise; likewise for dancing under the stars up on deck.

During the day, onboard activities will keep you busy with cooking demos (pick up pointers on how to re-create the Portuguese custard tarts known as pastéis de nata ), more port tastings, and lectures about Portugal’s politics, history, and culture.

The outdoor wading pool up on deck is a great place to cool off and chat with new friends while gazing at the views. There is also a gym and mini spa.

are uniworld cruises good

Overall, drawbacks are few. Space is tight in those cabins down on Decks 1 and 2, with some passengers saying there's barely enough room to get around the bed. And other guests have griped that service at dinner can be slow. But that's about it in the complaints department.

All-inclusive Douro River cruises operated by Uniworld start at $4,949 per person. For more information, go to Uniworld.com .

Other lines offering similar itineraries include Tauck and AmaWaterways , the two lines most similar to Uniworld with regard to price and quality. Viking ,  CroisiEurope —  and Avalon Wateways  all have Portugal trips as well.

The Best Uniworld River Cruises: Your Ultimate Travel Guide!

Embarking on a journey with Uniworld River Cruises is more than just a vacation—it’s an entrée into a world of unparalleled luxury and timeless elegance.

As river cruises gain popularity, discerning travelers seek experiences that go beyond the ordinary, and Uniworld stands out, offering a kaleidoscope of cultures, histories, and landscapes.

Dive into this comprehensive guide, and let’s set sail into the mesmerizing realm of Uniworld River Cruises.

Uniworld River Cruises

The In-Depth History of Uniworld River Cruises

Uniworld River Cruises is more than just a river cruise line; it’s a testament to visionary entrepreneurship, adaptability, and a passion for unparalleled luxury.

The brand’s journey from its inception to its current status as a leader in boutique river cruising is both inspiring and intriguing.

The Genesis: Serba Illich’s Vision

The seeds of Uniworld River Cruises were sown in 1976 by Yugoslavian entrepreneur Serba Illich. Originating as a tour operator company based in California, Uniworld initially provided guided tours primarily in Europe.

Transition to River Cruising

As the travel industry evolved, Illich recognized the untapped potential of river cruising. In the 1990s, Uniworld transitioned from land tours to focus on river cruises, a move that was both timely and strategic.

This was during a period when river cruising was beginning to gain traction as an intimate, immersive way to explore destinations.

Uniworld River Cruise

Partnership with The Travel Corporation

The early 2000s marked a pivotal moment in Uniworld’s history. The company formed a partnership with The Travel Corporation (TTC), a global conglomerate with various travel brands under its umbrella.

This alliance provided Uniworld with the resources and support to expand and refine its river cruise offerings.

The Birth of Boutique River Cruising

Under the stewardship of the TTC and with the visionary leadership of Beatrice Tollman, President and Founder of the boutique Red Carnation Hotel Collection, Uniworld underwent a transformative phase.

Drawing inspiration from the boutique hotel concept, the brand redefined luxury river cruising. Each ship was uniquely designed, resembling a floating boutique hotel, replete with exquisite antiques, original artworks, and bespoke furnishings.

Uniworld River Cruise

Expanding Horizons

With its revamped image and emphasis on luxury, Uniworld began to expand its horizons. Beyond the popular European rivers like the Danube, Rhine, and Seine, Uniworld ventured into less-traveled waters.

By the 2010s, they were offering cruises in Asia, Egypt, and even Russia, providing travelers with a broad palette of cultural and scenic experiences.

Sustainability and Community Engagement

Recognizing the significance of sustainable travel, Uniworld has, over the years, integrated eco-friendly practices and community engagement into its operations.

From green ship designs to partnerships with local artisans and support for community projects, the brand’s commitment to responsible tourism has become a core aspect of its identity.

Today: A Symbol of Luxury and Authenticity

Today, Uniworld River Cruises is celebrated for its unparalleled luxury, attention to detail, and authentic experiences.

While its fleet has grown and its destinations have expanded, the brand remains true to its ethos of offering boutique, personalized voyages that resonate with travelers seeking both luxury and substance.

Planning Your Cruise with Uniworld River Cruises

Embarking on a river cruise with Uniworld River Cruises is undoubtedly a voyage of luxury and enrichment.

Yet, like all great journeys, ensuring a smooth and memorable experience requires a bit of planning. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your Uniworld cruise is everything you’ve dreamed of and more.

Best Times to Cruise

Understanding when to sail can greatly enhance your experience. While Uniworld operates throughout the year, each destination has its peak cruise season .

Spring (April to June) and Fall (September to October) are ideal. The weather is pleasant, and the crowds are relatively smaller.

For the Mekong, November to March offers cooler temperatures. On the Ganges, October to March is preferable to avoid the intense summer heat.

May to September is best, with warmer temperatures and extended daylight hours.

October to April provides milder temperatures suitable for exploring.

Tips for First-Timers

If this is your inaugural river cruise, a few pointers can ensure you’re well-prepared:

Pack Smart:

River cruises are more relaxed than ocean cruises. While there are formal nights, ‘smart casual’ is the general dress code.

Understand Inclusions:

Uniworld offers a range of inclusions, from excursions to onboard amenities. Familiarize yourself with what’s offered to make the most of your experience.

Engage with the Crew:

The staff onboard are a wealth of knowledge, not just about the ship but also the destinations. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek recommendations.

Packing Recommendations

Packing right can greatly enhance your comfort during the cruise.

Essentials:

  • Comfortable walking shoes for excursions
  • Layered clothing to adapt to varying temperatures
  • A light rain jacket or umbrella
  • Universal adapters for onboard charging
  • Binoculars for scenic views
  • A day pack for off-ship adventures
  • A formal outfit for special evenings
  • Swimwear, if your ship has a pool or you plan on using spa facilities
  • Journal or diary to document your journey

Booking and Reservation Tips

Securing your dream cruise involves more than just selecting dates and destinations. Here are some tips to optimize your reservation:

Plan Ahead:

Popular itineraries can get booked up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Booking well in advance ensures you get your desired dates and cabin choices.

Use a Travel Advisor:

Experienced travel advisors can provide insights into the best cabins, potential deals, and even offer insights into the destinations.

Consider Special Deals:

Uniworld occasionally offers promotions like early booking discounts, last-minute deals, or themed cruises. Keep an eye out for these to get added value.

Check Visa Requirements:

Certain itineraries, especially in Asia and Russia, might require visas. Ensure you’re aware of and can fulfill the visa requirements of all countries you’ll be visiting.

Planning your cruise with Uniworld River Cruises is the first step in a journey of luxury, discovery, and personal enrichment. With each decision made in the planning phase, you craft an experience tailored to your desires.

So, whether you’re gazing at European castles, marveling at ancient Asian temples, or relishing onboard culinary delights, remember: a well-planned journey with Uniworld is a memory waiting to unfold.

Comparing Uniworld River Cruises to Other River Cruise Lines

The world of river cruising has burgeoned over the years, with several players promising unforgettable journeys through the heart of continents.

However, how does Uniworld River Cruises stack up against its competitors? Here’s a comparative analysis that delves into what sets Uniworld apart in the ever-growing river cruise market.

Luxury and Opulence

While most river cruise lines emphasize comfort, Uniworld has positioned itself as the epitome of luxury.

  • Boutique Ship Design: Unlike many cruise lines with uniform ship designs, each Uniworld vessel boasts its own unique character and aesthetic. Inspired by the regions they sail through, these ships often feel like floating five-star hotels.
  • Inclusivity: Where many cruise lines offer a base experience with additional paid options, Uniworld adopts an all-inclusive approach. From excursions to beverages and gratuities, the luxury is in not having to worry about add-ons.

Unique Itineraries

While popular river routes are staples across all cruise lines, Uniworld’s approach to crafting itineraries stands out.

  • Immersive Experiences: Beyond the usual sightseeing, Uniworld places emphasis on cultural immersion. This might mean a hands-on cooking class in Vietnam or a private art tour in a European city.
  • Extended Stays: Instead of rushing from one port to another, Uniworld often offers extended stays in key cities, allowing travelers a deeper exploration of the locale.

  • Community Engagement: Few cruise lines prioritize local engagement and support as deeply as Uniworld, making it a frontrunner in responsible tourism.

Service and Staff-to-Guest Ratio

A key differentiator for Uniworld is its unparalleled service.

  • Personalized Attention: With one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the river cruise industry, Uniworld guarantees an intimate and attentive service that many competitors find hard to match.
  • Highly Trained Crew: Beyond numbers, the Uniworld crew undergoes rigorous training to ensure they uphold the brand’s reputation for excellence.

Price Point and Value

While Uniworld is often positioned in the higher price bracket, it’s essential to understand the value offered.

  • All-Inclusive Luxury: The upfront cost includes a plethora of amenities and experiences that many other cruise lines charge extra for.
  • Exclusivity: The price mirrors the exclusivity and uniqueness of the Uniworld experience, from boutique ship designs to curated excursions.

In the vast sea of river cruise options, Uniworld River Cruises emerges as a beacon of luxury, authenticity, and sustainability.

FAQs on Uniworld River Cruises

Embarking on a journey with Uniworld River Cruises raises a plethora of questions, especially for first-time cruisers. Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers to guide prospective travelers.

1. What is included in my Uniworld cruise fare?

Most Uniworld cruises are all-inclusive. This typically covers accommodation, meals onboard, unlimited beverages (including many premium spirits and wines), onboard entertainment, scheduled airport transfers, and shore excursions. Wi-Fi, gratuities, and onboard fitness classes are also often included.

2. What type of attire is appropriate onboard?

During the day, casual wear is appropriate. For evenings, “smart casual” is the general guideline. Some events, like the Captain’s Welcome Dinner, might warrant slightly more formal attire.

3. Do Uniworld ships have Wi-Fi?

Yes, complimentary Wi-Fi is available on all Uniworld ships. However, the strength and speed of the connection might vary depending on the sailing region and the ship’s location.

4. What dining options are available for those with dietary restrictions?

Uniworld prides itself on accommodating various dietary needs, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. It’s advisable to communicate any dietary restrictions in advance, so the culinary team is well-prepared.

5. How does Uniworld cater to solo travelers?

Many Uniworld cruises offer a limited number of single-occupancy cabins or reduced single supplement rates for double-occupancy cabins. They also organize meet-and-greet events for solo travelers to connect.

6. Are Uniworld cruises suitable for families with children?

While Uniworld primarily caters to an adult audience, they offer specific family-friendly departures with their “Generations” program. These cruises include special excursions and onboard activities tailored for younger travelers.

Uniworld is committed to sustainable and responsible tourism. This includes eco-friendly ship designs, partnerships with conservation organizations, supporting local communities, and minimizing single-use plastics.

9. Do I need travel insurance for a Uniworld cruise?

While not mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended. It provides peace of mind, covering unforeseen circumstances that might affect or interrupt your travel plans.

10. Can I customize or extend my trip?

Yes, Uniworld offers various pre- and post-cruise extension packages. Additionally, their team can assist in creating tailored experiences if you wish to explore a destination more deeply.

11. How early should I arrive before my cruise starts?

It’s generally recommended to arrive at least a day before your cruise departure to account for any travel delays and to acclimatize to the time zone.

12. Are there medical facilities onboard?

While Uniworld ships are equipped with basic first aid amenities, they don’t have full-fledged medical facilities. For more severe medical emergencies, the ship would dock at the nearest port where medical attention can be sought.

On European cruises, the Euro is the primary currency onboard. For cruises in other regions, the ship’s onboard currency will typically align with the local currency. All major credit cards are also accepted.

14. Can I bring my own alcohol onboard?

15. Is there a limit to the luggage I can bring?

There’s no strict luggage limit, but cabin storage space can be limited. It’s advisable to check the specific ship’s layout and pack accordingly. Remember, most river cruise itineraries require casual attire, so heavy packing is often unnecessary.

16. Do the ships have elevators?

Most Uniworld ships are equipped with elevators, but they might not access all decks. It’s essential to check the specific ship’s amenities if elevator access is a crucial requirement.

17. Are the cruises wheelchair accessible?

While Uniworld makes every effort to accommodate all guests, not all ships or excursions are wheelchair-friendly due to design constraints or the historic nature of certain destinations. It’s best to check in advance.

19. Are there onboard laundry services?

Yes, most Uniworld ships offer laundry services for a fee. Some ships also have self-service laundry facilities.

20. What electrical outlets are used on the ships?

The Better Way to Cruise in Venice

The Better Way to Cruise in Venice

When I arrived in Venice to board the first European river cruise to host Americans since the start of the pandemic, I got that coveted and rare look at what this popular destination feels like without any ocean liners in port and minus the thousands of day-trippers they once dropped here on a regular basis.

Before the week was out, a few big ships had come and gone through the heart of the Venetian Lagoon, although those sailings would be short-lived. As of August 1, large ocean liners are banned from the city’s historic center .

But that doesn’t mean you can’t—and shouldn’t—still sail in the Venetian Lagoon.

My weeklong late June sailing on Uniworld Boutique River Cruises ’ new 126-passenger S.S. La Venezia offered a preview of what a unique treat it is to be able to explore Venice and beyond from the luxurious and slow-paced vantage point of one of the few, more environmentally friendly small ships (Uniworld is committed to at least 50 percent of its electricity being renewable by 2025 and banning single-use plastics by 2022, among other sustainability measures ) that will be able to continue to sail past the city’s landmarks and dock just steps away from St. Mark’s Square.

Imagine having your own floating boutique hotel in the heart of Venice.

Imagine having your own floating boutique hotel in the heart of Venice.

It wasn’t only the ease of having a floating luxury boutique hotel within walking distance of key attractions that made the cruise so enjoyable, it was also the relaxed nature of Uniworld’s Venice itinerary, which affords a much deeper dive into the destination than the typical, whirlwind day tours that conventional cruise ships and group tour companies offer.

Unlike most European river cruises that depart from one port and end in another, the Venetian Lagoon cruises by Uniworld and one other line, the more economical CroisiEurope, sail roundtrip from Venice. While we made a two-day jaunt up the Po River, the bulk of our cruise was spent in the lagoon, allowing plenty of time to explore Venice and nearby islands during off hours when you can better avoid the day-trippers who will no doubt be back in droves as larger ocean liners carry out plans to return to nearby ports.

I arrived by train from Rome late on a Sunday afternoon, in time to have dinner and take in sunset views of Venice’s waterways and skyline from the top deck.

Pandemic-related protocols

At that time, Italian regulations required a COVID test upon embarkation or within 24 hours of boarding, as well as a second test midweek and another before disembarking. Regulations can change on a dime during the pandemic, however, so travelers should verify what the latest rules are for U.S. cruise passengers in Italy at the time of travel.

Otherwise, protocols were no more intrusive than what most of us have come to expect in the age of COVID. Onboard, masks were required while walking the halls, but could be removed while outside or while seated in the dining and lounge areas.

Off the ship, Italy was still requiring masks both indoors and outside, although the outdoor mask requirement has since been dropped. And as of August 6, tourists and locals alike are required to have Italy’s so-called green pass , showing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test result in the last 48 hours to visit restaurants and many indoor venues.

Tests are readily available for free at train stations and pop-up clinics across the country and for about $25 at most pharmacies. This makes getting tested while in Italy easy, including for Americans needing the test required by the U.S. government for all international travelers entering the U.S. (including Americans returning home from abroad).

With larger cruise ships banned and fewer tourists due to the pandemic, for the time being you can visit Venice with fewer crowds.

Venice minus the masses

While the pandemic-related rules and restrictions can and have changed often in Italy and throughout Europe , I found navigating them well worth the opportunity to explore Venice without the typical tourist crowds.

On Uniworld’s inaugural sailing, there were fewer than 50 people on board, making for a private-yacht-like experience complete with butlers, farm-to-table dining, and small group excursions to some of the region’s most famous sites.

On our first full day in Venice, excursion options included a morning walk in Venice with a tour of the Doge’s Palace, as well as a private evening tour of St. Mark’s Basilica. I spent much of the day wandering the streets of Venice, which were delightfully void of the throngs of cruise passengers I encountered on my last trip here in 2019.

The city’s famed and formerly tourist-clogged canals were practically empty, although gondola captains stood at the ready. Street vendors, restaurants, and shops were mostly open, and there were enough tourists and locals on the streets and the waterfront to create the lively vibe one expects to find in any globally renowned city such as Venice.

The next afternoon we set out toward the Po River, sailing just inside the lagoon, past numerous colorful fishing villages on the barrier islands that separate the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea.

Uniworld’s Venice sailings also take passengers to more remote stretches along Italy’s Po River.

Uniworld’s Venice sailings also take passengers to more remote stretches along Italy’s Po River.

Stops included Chioggia, known as little Venice, where I joined a cycling excursion that took us on a relaxing 90-minute ride across two islands and to the channel that connects the lagoon to the Adriatic Sea.

The next day’s included excursion was a day trip to Bologna, complete with a pasta-making class.

The following day it was back to Chioggia, where we spent the morning wandering the village’s weekly street market before setting sail into the lagoon for an overnight stop at Uniworld’s new, private dock on Burano, which offers easy on-and-off walking access to the island best-known for its colorful houses and lacemakers.

The final two days allowed for leisurely sailing and solo or group exploration around Venice and the lagoon. Excursion options included a trip to one of Murano’s famed glass-blowing centers.

The entire experience reminded me what is so wonderful about small-ship cruising (the great service, the carefree nature of not having to pack and unpack more than once, the slower pace), and what I don’t miss about larger ships, especially in a place as magical and threatened as Venice.

Perhaps somewhat ironically, the S.S. La Venezia is Uniworld’s top-to-bottom overhaul of the River Countess , which made headlines when it was rammed by a cruise ship in 2019 as it sat docked in the heat of Venice. That accident renewed years-long calls for the recently enacted ban on large ships.

Many of the guests on my cruise had originally been scheduled to sail just after that collision, which took the ship out of service for a few months before its already planned upgrade. Instead, they got to sail on the newly refurbished ship with a perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the region at its uncrowded best.

A look inside Uniworld's opulent suites

These gorgeous floating abodes are as tempting as the places they sail to

It’s no secret that Uniworld is considered one of the best river cruise lines , loved for being more akin to floating hotels than mega liners, with a high staff-to-guest ratio and a style that feels extra special.

Founded by the same company behind the highly successful Red Carnation hotels (of which gorgeous Summer Lodge and The Rubens at the Palace are part), Uniworld is one of the most awarded luxury river cruise lines.

Forget cookie-cutter or bland rooms that you’ll want to spend more time out of than in. On a Uniworld cruise, the staterooms all feel a little more considered and are places that invite us to linger and relax. Frankly, even the smallest staterooms don’t feel disappointing.

Across the fleet, many of the entry-level stateroom options feature British-made Savoir beds (a brand that prides itself on exceptional mattresses and only makes a limited quantity every year). And the marble bathrooms are stocked with a selection of luxurious Asprey bathroom products, and fluffy bathrobes and slippers.

But it’s the best suites onboard Uniworld ships that are particularly head-turning. A more-is-more approach means these pockets of decadence feel ultra-opulent and sumptuous. The individual style mirrors the location they sail in, honouring their surroundings in art and fabric selections. For instance, in Venice , authentic Murano glass adorns the spaces, and the restaurant serves a local menu, so you don't feel you've really left when you get back on board after a day exploring the Venetian islands .

With river cruising gaining popularity , we've selected our favourite suites from an ever-expanding fleet of river ships that tempt us to splurge on an upgrade when we next sail.

The Royal Suite, Mekong Jewel

mekong jewel

The Mekong Jewel is quite the sight as it meanders along the famous Mekong River. It’s an all-suite ship, but the finest is the Royal Suite. A hardwood four-poster bed looks out through floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to a wraparound private deck complete with scarlet cushioned sun loungers and a bubbly hot tub – the perfect way to end a day after exploring the likes of Phenom Penh and Angkor Wat.

mekong jewel

We love how the décor of the Royal Suite pays homage to its surroundings, with beautiful Asian-inspired screens and orchids giving it a sense of place. And then there’s the bathroom – marble from top to bottom with an ornately painted double vanity and a large bath with a view.

Sail through Vietnam and Cambodia onboard Uniworld’s Mekong Jewel with Good Housekeeping on a 17-day holiday with departures throughout 2024 and 2025.

The Grand Suite, S.S. La Venezia

While smaller than the Royal Suite aboard the Mekong Jewel, the Grand Suite onboard S.S La Venezia is a golden masterpiece with a bedroom and living area separated by ornate sliding doors.

As a guest of the Grand Suite on the resplendent S.S. La Venezia, you’ll have in-suite butler service. When you board, a butler will unpack your belongings, carefully storing them for the wonderful days and evenings ahead. We love the bold leopard print upholstery and the abundance of strikingly bold Fortuny textiles, an acclaimed Venetian fabric designer, throughout the whole ship.

Oh, how we adore The Grand Suite onboard the S.S Bon Voyage , a beautiful ship that sails the rivers around Bordeaux , taking its guests to French villages and sought-after vineyards.

The full marble bathrooms are a striking style statement – some of the Grand Suites bathrooms feature fabulous jade-hued stone, and others are opulent in onyx. Across the ship, chic French finishes are pulled off with aplomb – and Le Salon Champagne is inspired by the style of Yves Saint Laurent’s Jardin Majorelle in Morocco.

The Royal Suite, River Tosca

a bedroom with a bed and a desk

A little more understated than other Uniworld suites, finished in an elegant palette of taupe and blush pink, the two Royal Suites aboard River Tosca are cosy abodes with separate seating areas.

This stylish ship sails the River Nile, taking 82 guests with her. The Royal Suites are pampering cocoons, but it’s hard to resist the draw of the sundeck, where deep cushioned loungers have a front-row view of the passing scenery, and there’s a tempting plunge pool for refreshing beneath the Egyptian sun.

Step aboard the River Tosca, a Uniworld ship, on a Good Housekeeping Holidays cruise in September 2024. You’ll be joined by your favourite historian, Lucy Worsley when you take afternoon tea and hear about Agatha Christie’s time in Egypt writing Death on the Nile.

Maharaja Suite, Ganges Voyager II

a bathroom with a large tub

Fresh fruit and flowers await lucky guests of the all-suite Ganges Voyager II , a remarkable ship that sails around India. There’s just one of the top suites – the Maharaja Suite. It has a gorgeous four-poster bed and a style that honours the local style and craftsmanship and intricate design features. We also love the Heritage Suites, located at the front of the ship with Juliet balconies to enjoy the passing views.

Sail the Ganges and discover India’s Golden Triangle in November 2024 with a special guest appearance by celebrity chef Atul Kochhar.

Tom Cruise surprises Paralympian Ali Truwit with a ‘good luck’ phone call

Paralympian Ali Truwit got a personal call from Tom Cruise before she won a pair of silver medals in Paris.

The “Top Gun: Maverick” star called the swimmer on Wednesday, Sept. 4, before two of her swimming events.

In a video of the moment, Truwit greeted Cruise on speakerphone. She told Cruise that the moment was “the coolest thing ever,” to which the actor responded, “You are the coolest thing ever.”

The swimmer’s mom, Jody Truwit, told TODAY via email that one of her best friends from college brought her daughter's story to the actor’s attention. The call served as “a pick-me-up good luck surprise” for the swimmer.

She said Cruise’s main message to her daughter on the call, which lasted around five minutes, was to “go have fun.”

Jody Truwit paraphrased the rest of their conversation and Cruise’s encouraging words as, “You’ve trained. You’ve worked so hard. You’ve already won in my mind. We’re cheering for you.”

In addition to offering his support, Cruise also invited Truwit to visit the set of the eighth “Mission: Impossible” film in London.

In the days that followed the call from Cruise, Truwit had two big wins during the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games .

She took home two silver medals, first for the women’s 400-meter freestyle S10 event on Sept. 5 and then for the 100-meter backstroke S10 on Sept. 6.

The 2024 Paris Games marks Truwit’s first as a Paralympian. The swimmer, who previously competed on Yale University’s swim team, was attacked by a shark in May 2023 while snorkeling in the Turks and Caicos Islands with her former teammate.

“A shark came up and started attacking us and aggressively bumping us and ramming us from underneath, and we fought back and shoved and kicked, but pretty quickly it got my leg in its mouth,” Truwit told TODAY on Aug. 23. “And the next thing I knew, it had bitten off my foot and part of my leg.”

U.S. Paralympian Ali Truwit poses for a photo at the USA House at Paralympics Paris 2024.

After the attack, she underwent multiple blood transfusions and surgeries, which included amputation. In the aftermath, she said that adjusting to her new reality was difficult and that she “didn’t want anyone to see my prosthetic leg.”

She eventually made her way back to the pool, and her former coach came out of retirement to help with recovery.

Truwit ultimately returned to competing that same year, and in December 2023, she medaled at the U.S. Paralympics Swimming National Championships. Months later, she went on to qualify for the Paralympics.

Coach Jamie Barone has said that Truwit is the “hardest worker” he has ever met.

“If at any point in time she had texted me or called me and said, ‘You know what, I’m just going to curl up in a ball today, and I’m going to cry.’ Everyone in the world would be like, ‘That checks out. You take the day, you do whatever,’” Barone added. “Not once. She has never once missed a day of practice.”
