Best and Worst Times to Visit U.S. Virgin Islands

The best times to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands are December through April during the dry season. The warmer months of March and April are even better.

But the best times also depend on what visitors plan to do when they get there. Some months are better than others for spending time on the beaches and in the water.

The worst times to visit St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands are September through November. These months fall inside the heart of the Virgin Islands hurricane season, also known as the rainy season.

The U.S. Virgin Islands rely heavily on tourism to sustain their economy. The islands welcome nearly 700,000 visitors each year by air and more than 1 million by sea, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The island chain is one of the most visited in the Caribbean. The majority of cruise visitors go to St. Thomas while hotel visitors go to St. Thomas and St. John.

The Dry Season

The dry season in the U.S. Virgin Islands runs from December to May, although May usually has higher rainfall than the other dry season months.

Many tourists choose to visit the islands at this time because of the likelihood of sunny weather and the elimination of hurricane threat. The annual Caribbean hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30 every year. September and October are the most active months for tropical storms and hurricanes.

Nearly 60 percent of tourists to the U.S. Virgin Islands come between December and May, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The peak tourist month is March during spring break from schools. December is a popular time for visitors for the same reason.

It rains very little during the dry season with an average of about two inches a month, according to the U.S. National Weather Service. May receives the most rain of the dry months, averaging just over three inches. That’s still moderate for a Caribbean island.

Virgin Islands Hurricane Season

The St. Thomas hurricane season officially begins June 1 and goes through the end of November at the same time as the Caribbean hurricane season. Tourism declines during this time because of the threat of bad weather.

September is the least popular month for visitors to come to the islands, followed by October. These two months are usually the worst months in the Caribbean for hurricanes, tropical storms and heavy rains. In the Virgin Islands, rainfall averages five to six inches a month from September through November or more than double the amount of the dry season.

Average Monthly Temperatures

Average daytime temperatures range from 85 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 90 degrees from July through September, according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

Average nighttime temperatures range from 72 degrees Fahrenheit in January to 78 from June through September. Seawater temperatures stay between the daytime highs and nighttime lows. Swimming is usually comfortable for every month of the year, although there are some exceptions during cooler days.

These numbers are historical averages. Visitors may find that actual temperatures (and rain) vary somewhat from the averages.

Most and Least Popular Times to Visit

The chart to the right using data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization clearly shows that the most popular times to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands are March and December. March is popular because of spring break from schools; December is popular because of holiday vacations as well as winter break from schools.

The least popular time to visit is September, followed by October, during the worst months of the Caribbean hurricane season.

Other Tips on When to Visit

Although December through April are the best times to visit because of comfortable temperatures and low risk of rain, some travel planners may want other options.

Fewer crowds and lower prices can make rainy season months seem more appealing. But the threat of hurricanes can make travel during this time a risky bet. It’s a better option for last-minute vacations after reviewing the 10-day forecast.

The most expensive and crowded month to visit the US Virgin Islands is December.  With the holiday season in full swing, tourists are looking for a warm escape from the winter blues. This is also the beginning of the peak season, so the islands are incredibly busy.

December is also the end of the hurricane season, so the weather is not too hot, and runs little chance of tropical storms ruining the trip. All of these factors cumulate in high prices with  hotels costing roughly $350 a night .

August through November are also not a great time to visit these islands  due to the weather. There is high heat and heavy precipitation through these months, resulting in a less-than-ideal trip to the US Virgin Islands.

Cheapest Month To Visit US Virgin Islands

As with most tourist destinations, the months with the worst weather are the cheapest times to visit these islands.  September is the absolute cheapest month to visit the US Virgin Islands.  Budget travelers will find cheaper flights and hotels in the early fall months.

However, the prices are more affordable this time of year due to  September being the peak of hurricane season . This month sees the most rain and warmest temperatures out of the year, which scares many of the tourists away.

Yet if you love a good adventure and want to risk the possibility of a storm,  you will have most of the islands to yourself!  Visiting in September or October will get you low crowds and cheap prices, you just need to be wary of the intense storms.

To find the best combination of prices, activities, and weather,  April is the best month to visit the US Virgin Islands . The springtime weather sees  mild temperatures around 80℉  and very little precipitation, making it an ideal time to enjoy the outdoors.

As a part of the shoulder season, you will also find more reasonable pricing for  flights around $400.  There will also be fewer tourists around the islands, meaning you will have more space and sunlight for the best price compared to other months.

January is one of the coolest months in the US Virgin Islands, but that does not mean the weather is bad! On average  temperatures range from 85℉ to 72℉ , with roughly  2.4 inches of rain  throughout the month.

This also happens to be the busiest month of the year, so  be wary of crowds . The US Virgin Islands are hot spots for cruise ships, so you will likely see beaches swollen with other tourists and prices at all-time highs.

To escape from this, you may consider  visiting the island of St. John  which is mostly protected by a national park. This island makes it a bit easier to escape the crowds and enjoy the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

February: Great Time for a Boat Ride

Temperatures remain similar in February in the US Virgin Islands,  ranging from 85℉ to 72℉  during the day. There is less of a chance of running into rain in February, as the islands only measure  1.5 inches of precipitation .

You will still find many crowds this time of year and  prices for hotels increase  a bit after holiday sales. As a part of the peak season, prices can be  $150 more  than much of the rest of the year for each night at a hotel.

The US Virgin Islands are made up of 50 total islands, and  exploring these smaller islands  by boat can be a great activity when the beaches are full. You can get away from the crowds and enjoy more personal experiences by venturing outside the main islands!

March: Visit Beaches

Weather in the US Virgin Islands begins to increase as summer approaches. Temperatures average between   86℉ to 73℉.  This is also the driest month of the year with  only 1.4 inches of rainfall.

This is the  last month of the peak season  in the US Virgin Islands, as students on spring break love to vacation on the warm beaches. Due to this extra travel, it also tends to be  one of the most expensive months to visit with flights around $650 .

In March you can watch the  Annual St. Thomas International Regatta , a world-famous yacht race that brings in boat lovers from around the world. The event hosts multiple races, buffets, happy hours, and live music sessions!

April: Festivals

Summer is almost here in the US Virgin Islands as temperatures climb to highs ranging from  87℉ to 74℉.  Unfortunately, the rains increase as well to  2.7 inches of precipitation  over the month. Peak season is officially over and crowds begin to dissipate.

Hurricane season is approaching, but there is still plenty of sun to soak in!  Tourism begins to decrease slightly  for the first time all year in April and the temperatures and rains amp up. Luckily  prices of travel and hotels drop  as the peak season ends.

The island of  St Thomas hosts its Carnival celebration in April . The month of celebrations crescendos in the final week full of parties. With food fairs and daily music festivals, it is certainly a week you won’t soon forget.

May: Explore the Outdoors

Summer and hurricane season arrive in the US Virgin Islands in May , although you are not likely to run into a major storm. You tend to see  3.1 inches of rain  throughout the month with peak temperatures ranging from  88℉ to 76℉.

The islands become more popular in the summer months due to vacations from schools, so  flights tend to be around $500  when traveling from the United States. However, you can find more budget-friendly stay options while on the islands.

One of the most unique experiences in the world can be found on the island of St. Croix.  Salt River Bay Historical National Park  is home to one of the world’s few bioluminescent bays. You can kayak through the mangroves during the day and watch the glowing waters in the evenings!

June: Best Time For Swimming

The month of June sees warmer waters and weather, with temperatures averaging around  89℉ to 78℉.  Luckily there is not too much rain this time of year as well, with a low average of  2.5 inches of precipitation.

Due to the summer influx, you might see some crowded beaches and restaurants but nothing too overwhelming.  Flights cost about $500 roundtrip , which is a great price to slip to the island before the hurricanes take full effect.

For those who missed the carnival in St. Thomas, you can still catch the  St. John Carnival in late June!  Like many other carnivals, the last week of the month is full of parades, dances, and street food that you can’t walk away from.

July: Best Prices

Summer temperatures begin to reach their peak in July, with  averages ranging from 90℉ to 78℉.  Hurricanes become more likely in July, but on average the US Virgin islands only see  2.9 inches of rain.

Flights costs are down to roughly $450,  as the hurricane likelihood increases. The great summer heat may be attractive to those who live in the north. And with plentiful tropical fruit, there is no shortage of things to enjoy.

If you are willing to risk the weather  prices are very cheap in August, with flights costing just $400 on average.  You will still find plenty of warm surfs and fascinating sea life to explore around the islands during this month.

Ocean lovers will love the opportunity to dive in the world-famous  Cane Bay Wall in St. Croix.  This massive 4000-meter drop in the ocean is a hot spot for free divers swimming their way from shore. But scuba divers will find beautiful coral reefs as they descend into the ocean’s depths.

September: Visit St. Thomas

In the last month of the summer heat, temperatures remain in their familiar range of  90℉ to 78℉.  However, this month does see the largest amount of precipitation all year with roughly  5.6 inches of rain total.

This is  the cheapest month to visit the US Virgin Islands.  Due to the turbulent weather, travel and crowds are low on the islands in September. Costs are relatively cheap with  flights priced out at $300 round trip.

St. John island has a hiking trail known as  Reef Bay Trail that contains Taino petroglyphs to observe.  Little is known about the natives who lived on the islands before the European settlers, making this preserved marking of their presence that much more intriguing.

October: Ride a Ferry

As the northern hemisphere cools, so do the US Virgin Islands with  average temperature highs dipping to 89℉ and 77℉.  Although the tropical storms continue leaving  5.4 inches of precipitation falling this month.

October is the second cheapest month to travel to the US Virgin Islands, with flights only costing $350.  Hotels and transportation are often cheaper as well, making this the most budget-friendly month to visit the islands.

For those who love rum and history, a tour of the  Cruzan Rum Distillery in St. Croix  is a must. With free tastings and fresh stock to bring home, this experience will teach you how rum is made from molasses and how it looked for the pirates in the 1760s!

November: Go Jetskiing

Temperatures on the US Virgin Islands finally begin to cool, with average highs ranging from  87℉ to 75℉.  The rains are still persistent, but not as bad as in the past few months with an average of  5.2 inches of rain  throughout the month.

With the holiday season beginning, prices begin to increase in November.  Flights cost about $500 round trip  this time of year but can get even pricer around Thanksgiving. Even with lingering rain, there are plenty of activities to do on the islands.

November is a great time to visit some of the historical landmarks around the islands, such as the  Annaberg plantation ruins in Leinster Bay on St. John . As some of the most well-preserved sugar plantation ruins, you can explore the complex social history of the island.

December: Celebrate Christmas Island Style

The weather becomes beautifully mild in December, with highs ranging just between  86℉ and 74℉.  There will still be a few days of lingering rain, but the month only sees about   3 inches of precipitation.

December is the most expensive month to visit the US Virgin Islands, with flights costing roughly $700.  The beginning of the high season and additional Christmas travel makes it an incredibly pricey time to visit the US Virgin Islands.

St. Croix Christmas Festival  is a long-held event originating from the time when enslaved people were given some days off around Christmas. Costumes, parties, and music can be found across the island celebrating that traditional holiday with a modern twist.

Why Go To U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands are "America's Caribbean Paradise" – the place to see moko jumbies (stilt walkers) dance at a Carnival parade, hear the lilting patois of a Creole dialect or smell the spices in a saltfish pate (all without losing cell phone reception). You can visit either St. Thomas, St. John or St. Croix, or better yet, spend a little time on all three islands. That way you'll get plenty of pampering, undisturbed nature and colonial history jammed into one vacation.

Each island offers something different. Called "Rock City" for its hilly, craggy horizon, St. Thomas is known for luxury – from the megayachts moored in the harbor to the high-end storefronts along Main Street. Located a short ferry ride east, St. John appeals to honeymooners and nature lovers, with more than 7,000 acres of dedicated parkland , along with pristine beaches. Way down south in the Caribbean Sea, St. Croix allows visitors to explore the islands' colonial heritage and the history of slavery at several different forts and plantations. Plus, it's on this island that you'll find the Cruzan Rum Distillery.

A visit to the islands now may look a little different than it did several years ago. Hurricanes Maria and Irma devastated the islands, leaving homes and hotels either uninhabitable or severely damaged. The best time to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands is April to June, when you can expect mild weather and very little rainfall. What You Need to Know

Learn the proper greeting  Say "good morning," "good afternoon" and "good night" to locals when you enter or exit a room. They consider these phrases friendlier greetings than "hello."

You're in the island sun  Take it easy your first day on the islands to avoid heat stroke. And always apply sunscreen before venturing out.

You need special sunscreen In March 2020, the U.S. Virgin Islands banned the use and possession of sunscreen that contains oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene to protect its prized ecosystem. Sunscreens labeled "reef safe" are likely free of these three ingredients, but always check the label to be sure.

You'll see island critters  Lizards and medium-sized iguanas roam freely outdoors.

How to Save Money in U.S. Virgin Islands

Book early It's possible to secure a good deal at one of the USVI's four-star hotels in the peak season, but you should start looking for a room up to a year in advance. 

Visit in spring April and May hotel rates are lower, plus you'll get your Caribbean vacation in before the sticky, wet summer. 

Take an Eastern Caribbean cruise St. Thomas is one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean, and the top cruises generally dock for up to eight hours. That'll give you time to explore Rock City or even take a ferry to St. John.

Culture & Customs

Similar to the residents of other Caribbean islands, Virgin Islanders dress casually but conservatively. Wearing a bathing suit — or even sandals — anywhere besides the beach marks you as a tourist. 

Since these islands are territories of the United States, their currency is the U.S. dollar. Overall, tipping etiquette is the same in the Virgin Islands as in other parts of the United States; 15 to 20% is considered the standard, but more is appreciated for exceptional service.

What to Eat

The U.S. Virgin Islands offer an assortment of restaurant options that range from white tablecloth establishments to affordable diners and fast-food joints. For a tasty meal on St. Thomas, head to restaurants in Frenchtown or Red Hook. On St. John, Cruz Bay is the place to be. There are also a handful of suitable options on St. Croix's West End. 

Most restaurants in those areas will give you the coddling tourist experience, but you might also find the opportunity to try a local dish. Look for menu options like pate (ground beef, chicken or salted cod wrapped and deep-fried in dough), johnnycake (deep-fried dough), fungi (corn meal) or peas and rice (kidney beans or lentils with brown rice) to eat like a Virgin Islander.

St. Thomas is a major commercial hub and a very busy cruise port, and therefore susceptible to tourist-targeted crime. Additionally, there is a presence of violent crime on this island, though you'll see fewer violent crimes on St. Croix and St. John. Take a taxi if possible, and if you have a rental car, keep it locked. Limit your travels at night – particularly in Charlotte Amalie, Christiansted and Frederiksted – and don't travel alone.

You should also safeguard your skin. The heat in the Caribbean can certainly be luxurious, but also scorching. Always remember to apply sunscreen before venturing out and reapply frequently if you'll be outside all day. (Know, too, that the U.S. Virgin Islands has banned sunscreen that contains oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene.) Use insect repellent in the evenings when the islands' "no-see-ums" (tiny gnats) like to bite.

Getting Around U.S. Virgin Islands

The best way to get around any U.S. Virgin Island is in a car – either your own rental or a taxi. You can rent a car at or nearby one of the islands' two airports: the Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas and the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) on St. Croix. Ferries from St. Thomas are the most efficient way of getting to St. John (which has no airport) or even the British Virgin Islands . 

Taking a cruise is also a popular way to travel to the Virgin Islands – in fact, St. Thomas is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. Although its port is less busy, you can also take a cruise to St. Croix. Popular lines to visit both islands include Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean .

Although a passport is not required to travel between the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands, you must bring a passport if you're planning to visit the British Virgin Islands during your stay. Visit the U.S. State Department's website for more information on entry and exit requirements.

Best Time to Visit the US Virgin Islands: Season by Season Guide

The US Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are some of the most popular vacation destinations in the Caribbean.  This is especially true for American citizens, who do not need a passport to enter.  If you’re thinking of vacationing in the US Virgin islands, this detailed guide will help you choose the best time of year to visit.

The best season to vacation in the US Virgin Islands is different for everyone. While winter is the most popular time for a Caribbean getaway, it also brings high prices and crowds.  You may not mind the hot summer temperatures or rainy fall weather in order to find better deals and quieter beaches.

I’ve visited the US Virgin Islands in all seasons but fall (although I did technically visit the Caribbean for a fall honeymoon ).  Surprisingly, I have no particular bias towards any season, as each has its own perks.

With that, here is my guide to the best time of year to visit the US Virgin Islands. I’ve also included general sunrise and sunset viewing times, so you can book restaurant reservations or find pretty viewing spots during golden hour. That said, daylight hours are pretty consistent year-round.

Best Time to Visit the US Virgin Islands

The beaches and weather in the US Virgin Islands are generally amazing all year round. Therefore, it might seem like I’ve written more cons than pros, as that is often what sets each season apart. That said, I made sure to list some fun events that occur only during each particular season.

Spring is often considered to be the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands. While March begins with high season, the crowds will be dwindling by mid-May.  Temperatures remain comfortable before the summer heat sets in, and inflated winter prices begin to decrease.

April can still be a pricey month, but May and June are often more affordable, and generally do not book up as quickly as in high season. However, the cooling winter breeze will also gradually disappear, leaving stifling heat behind by late spring.

Warmer sea temperatures also mean the beginning of the annual Sargassum season. Late April is typically when this smelly seaweed begins to arrive at some of the beaches.  Upon our recent visit to St. Croix in early June, the Sargassum had already piled up in some spots, though most popular beaches were seaweed-free.

One awesome perk of a spring US Virgin Island vacation is seeing the vibrant red flamboyant trees in full bloom.  This only happens between May and September, and the way these trees pop against the green hillsides is absolutely stunning.

Finally, those traveling to St. Croix should note that Sandy Point Beach closes for turtle nesting between April 1st and September 1st each year. Sandy Point is known to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the US Virgin Islands, so if a visit is at the top of your bucket list, plan your St. Croix trip during fall or winter instead.

Sunrise/Sunset: Around 12 to 13 hours of daylight. Sunrise is around 6:20am in mid-March and around 5:45am in mid-June.  Sunset is around 6:30pm in mid-March and close to 7pm by late June.

Spring Events:

• U.S. Virgin Islands Transfer Day – March 31st
• St. Thomas Carnival – Second largest Caribbean Carnival, runs for a month around April/May
• St. Thomas International Regatta
• St. Croix International Regatta

If you don’t mind the strong sun, summer can be a wonderful time of year to visit the US Virgin Islands. The crowds and prices are low compared to winter, and the sticky weather makes you want to jump right into the sparkling turquoise water. Plus, the gorgeous red flamboyant trees will still be popping against the tropical blues.

While hurricane season technically starts June 1st, it doesn’t normally pick up until August.  That said, it’s always a good idea to make flexible plans in case a storm pops up unexpectedly. We just missed getting caught in a storm late July one year, where cancelled ferry schedules would have stranded us on St. John.

Additionally, summer is when Sahara Desert dust storms periodically blow dirt particles from Africa all the way across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Although this makes for some interesting sunset colors, the dust does degrade air quality, and can be problematic for those with vulnerable respiratory systems.

Summer is also tricky for fully enjoying the hiking trails in the US Virgin Islands, as the thick heat often makes conditions more taxing and unpleasant. Morning or well-shaded hikes are best, and always bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

Finally, summer brings peak Sargassum seaweed levels at certain beaches.  While most US Virgin Island beaches remain unaffected, beaches like Brown Bay and Jumbie Bay on St. John, to name a couple, are less than desirable.

Sunrise/Sunset: Begins with around 13 hours of daylight in June and shortens to around 12 by September.  Sunrise is around 5:45am in mid-June and around 6:10am by mid-September.  Sunset is around 7pm in late June, and around 6:17pm by mid-September.

Summer Events:

• St. John Carnival – Month-long event with festivities leading up to Emancipation Day and July 4th
• Virgin Islands Emancipation Day – July 3rd
• Independence Day – July 4th
• Mango Melee and Tropical Fruit Festival – St Croix

A fall visit to the US Virgin Islands will either be peaceful as could be or full of drama. This is because fall kicks off with hurricane season in full swing.  Therefore, I do not recommend an early fall visit unless you are willing to accept this uncertainty.

That said, depending on how the cards fall, your trip could just as easily be storm-free, allowing you to enjoy bargain prices and empty beaches. However, there are still some drawbacks to keep in mind. Many restaurants and boat charter companies close through at least October.

If you are dreaming of a day spent island hopping, another season might work better for you. However, with St. Croix being forty miles south of the other US Virgin Islands, island hopping is not as much of a thing. Therefore, the lack of day sails may not be as important if St. Croix is your destination.

If you are fine with a low key vacation that primarily consists of beach visits and nature hikes, then definitely feel free to visit in September. Just be sure to book flexible! After all, this is the month when Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria tore through the US Virgin Islands in 2017.

For a bit more certainty during a fall trip to the US Virgin Islands, a November visit is the sweet spot. Most restaurants will have opened back up and you’ll still be traveling before the mad holiday rush begins.

Sunrise/Sunset: Around 12 to 11 hours of daylight.  Sunrise is around 6:10am in mid-September and around 6:45am in mid-December.  Sunset is around 6:17pm in mid-September and around 5:50pm in mid-December.

Fall Events:

• Skinny Legs Halloween Party – St. John
• Coral Bay Yacht Club Thanksgiving Regatta – St. John
• Taste of St Croix – November/December

Beginning with New Year’s Eve, the winter months are high season in the US Virgin Islands. Expect crowds and prices to be high, especially over New Year’s, which is the busiest and most expensive week of the year. 

If you can afford the price tag, winter is a very exciting and fun time of year to be in the islands and escape the cold.  Just be sure to book everything well in advance – at least eight to twelve months. Also expect to have plenty of company, as there will be lots of cruise ship traffic coming in on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

Despite the crowds, winter is still the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands to escape cold weather, enjoy gentle sea breezes, and admire the mega yachts as they pull into the bays. Some brief showers are normal, but overall the weather is usually sunny and perfect for the beach.  These conditions are lovely for hiking, especially on St. John where Virgin Islands National Park contains more than twenty trails.

For a winter trip, make restaurant reservations and book excursions like day sails in advance.  Also, remember to be very patient with wait staff at bars and restaurants. Island time is already slower than what you may be used to, and with staff shortages and heaps of visitors, it’s normal for service to get backed up.

Sunrise/Sunset:  Between 11 to 12 hours of daylight.  Sunrise is around 6:45am in mid-December and around 6:20am by mid-March.  Sunset is around 5:50pm in mid-December and closer to 6:30pm by mid-March.

• The US Virgin Islands is an idyllic tropical paradise with year-round sunshine and relatively constant temperatures. Expect incredible weather, warm temperatures, and crystal clear waters for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, sailing, and windsurfing no matter when you decide to visit the country.
• The high season in the US Virgin Islands includes December, January, and February. However, the windward side of St Thomas tends to get very gusty during this period so spending time here can be quite unpleasant.
• February and March are also best avoided as they are rainy months and most travelers prefer to avoid any stormy weather.
• If you want to stay away from crowds then July through October may be better choices than December through May.
• Additionally, due to the US Virgin Islands being over in the Atlantic Ocean and located far away from any major landmass, both temperatures and high winds are kept at bay leaving you with a much warmer experience compared to other Caribbean destinations.

Best Time to Travel to the USVI for Great Weather

The weather in the Virgin Islands varies between dry and humid, hot and muggy, or wet and rainy. A great time to visit the US Virgin Islands for great weather is during the summer months of June, July, and August, which are all warm and somewhat humid, but generally sunny. Nevertheless, the month with the absolute best weather is March. During this period, the Islands are a tropical paradise perfect for water sports, beach holidays, and sightseeing.

As for hurricanes, they can occur at any time of year but are most common from August to October.

Finally, temperature-wise, the most ideal period to visit the country is between June and September, when average temperatures range from 24°C (75°F) to 30°C (86°F). In April and May, there are sunny days with temperatures around 28oC (82oF), while June through November are dry months with low humidity and temperatures that range from 30-35 degrees Celsius (85 to 95 degrees F).

Best Time to Travel to the USVI for Better Prices

In general, accommodation and dining prices are more affordable between March and September. Paired with great weather, it is the ideal period for a beach getaway. The truth is, though, that hotel, restaurant, and flight rates are particularly more cost-effective in April, May, and June, but if you want to avoid crowds and bad weather, then March, June, and September are good months to travel, as they are warmer (which means more comfortable) than the chillier late-winter months and, at the same time, not yet as hot as other months during summertime.

The high season is typically from mid-November through the end of January. This can be good for those who want to enjoy some of the best water sports on the islands during 6 months out of the year when temperatures are warmest. But, for those looking for better bargains and lower prices, it’s recommended to travel between April and October as this time is considered low season (thus, offering better options for budget-conscious travellers).

Best Time to Travel to the USVI for a Lively Vibe

In general, the beaches of the US Virgin Islands attract thousands of tourists year-round. However, the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands for the most animated atmosphere is during the spring and fall months. Summer is one of the busiest times with a high volume of visitors coming in due to good weather and the variety of events hosted in the area. The major event is Viva San Juan, a three-day festival that takes place at different locations on Saint Croix during late June or early July, making it a must-do while visiting this location. That aside, the US Virgin Islands are a popular vacation destination for spring break. There are many events, excursions, and special deals offered during the months of March and April. As for the weather, it tends to be excellent at this time of year with lots of warm tropical sunshine and cool evenings.

People wanting to avoid crowds should visit the USVI during the Fall months of October through December when prices will also be lower in comparison to other times of the year. By December, many restaurants and outdoor activities have closed for the season and airfares can be considerably lower. For the most peaceful and relaxing experiences, though, the months between December and April are more than suitable, as the temperatures are moderate, the weather is pleasant, there are fewer crowds, and the island’s beaches are at their most beautiful, while there are still quite a few festivals to attend.

Best Time to Travel to the USVI for Water Sports

Water sports like boating and kayaking are available year-round. If you are looking for the best water-related activities, such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and other water sports, then plan your trip from November through April, a period that brings more sun than the previous months, making it perfect for water sports. This is also a fantastic period to travel to the Islands for these activities by virtue of reduced storm activity that tends to keep water conditions calmer in those months as well.

That being said, the summer months are also a great time to visit for US Virgin Islands water sports, yet for another reason (other than the best sea conditions). Many hotels in the Caribbean offer discounts and special deals during this time due to the large influx of visitors. So, you might land at a better price for things like boat tours, cruises, and underwater explorations with the guidance of a professional.

Best Time to Visit the USVI for Events

The most celebrated festivals take place between April and October, which is also the high season, such as the Annual Rolex Cup Regatta, the US Virgin Islands Carnival, St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon, Virgin Islands' Emancipation Day, Arts Alive Summer Arts & Crafts Festival, and the St. Thomas USVI Open Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament. To find better rates and avoid crowds, though, you could plan your trip around one of these equally popular (yet, on a lesser scale) events: Valentine’s Day in February; Easter Week in March; Memorial Day Weekend in May; Independence Day in July; Labor Day Weekend in September; Thanksgiving Weekend in November.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands?

Winter through spring is the best time to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands. Pleasant temperatures and low rainfall make December through May a good time to go to the USVI.

June is also one of the best times to visit St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John since precipitation is low and temperatures, although a bit higher, are still comfortable.

Visiting the USVI By Season

Magens Bay, St. Thomas

The temperature averages 84℉ (29℃) in the USVI from June through August. St. Croix and St. Thomas experience the driest summers of the three islands, with an average monthly rainfall of 2.5 inches (63.5mm) on each island.

In St. John, summer precipitation is about 3.4 inches (86 mm) per month. High temperatures toggle between 89℉ (31.6℃) and 90℉ (32℃).

Summer is a great time to enjoy its beaches , swim, snorkel, and scuba dive.

September, October, and November are the USVI’s rainiest months. In fall, average precipitation increases to five inches (127mm) per month in St. Croix, rising to six inches (152 mm) per month in St. Thomas and to 6.5 inches (165mm)  per month in St. John.

For all three islands, the average temperature is 82℉ (28℃), with highs reaching 89 to 90℉  (31.6 to 32 ℃) in September and October. In September and October, there may be storms.

When it rains, consider shopping, which is one of the best things to do in the U.S. Virgin Islands .

Shop in St. Thomas’ Havensight Mall and the Crown Bay Center. Walk under the awnings of the boutiques in St. Croix’s Christiansted and Frederiksted. In St. John, duck into stores in Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay.

Winter is glorious in the Caribbean and is the best time to go to the US Virgin Islands.

The average temperature of 78℉ (26 ℃) per month for December through February for St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, combined with low precipitation, make the islands a sought-after sunny getaway.

Take advantage of the dry and comfortable weather to hike the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John, sun and swim at beautiful Magens Bay Beach on St. Thomas, and snorkel Buck Island Reef National Monument, home to some of the best beaches in St. Croix .

In winter, consider a whale-watching outing to spot the humpback whales that arrive in the USVI waters to give birth and mate.

Spring brings balmy days and relatively low rainfall, making exploring the islands fun. St. Thomas and St. John’s temperatures average 82℉ (28℃), while St. Croix is just a degree or so cooler. From March through May, precipitation remains low.

The comfortable weather makes it easy to enjoy beaches and watersports. In St. Croix, kayak Salt River Bay National Historical Park and scuba dive off Cane Bay Beach.

When Is Rainy Season?

August through November constitutes the USVI’s rainy season.  St. John receives slightly more rain than St. Thomas or St. Croix.

When Is High Season?

The weather in the USVI is especially inviting in December through March, the high season. Average temperatures on all three main islands hover around 78 ℉ (26℃), and rainfall is low.

When Is Shoulder Season?

March, April, May, June, and July can be considered shoulder season in the USVI, as temperatures and rainfall increase compared with high season, but the weather remains inviting.

When Is Low Season?

Low season, which coincides with the heart of the rainy season, stretches from August through November.

St. Thomas is Best for: Shopping, upscale dining, and nightlife

Popular with cruise ships, St. Thomas is the busiest and most commercialized of the three islands. It also has a reputation for being more upscale, with plenty of duty-free shopping, high-end dining, and golf. And, unlike the other islands, St. Thomas has a hopping nightlife scene after dark.

What to do on St. Thomas Island:

Board the St. Thomas Skyride and take it to a point 700 feet above the island’s capital of Charlotte Amalie for dramatic views of the Caribbean. Or, swim with sea lions at Coral World Ocean Park. You can also tour Bluebeard’s Castle, a Danish fortress built in 1689; visit the Haagensen House, home of Danish banker Hans Haagensen; and climb the 99 Steps (there are actually 103 of them). And we can't forget the beach. Don’t miss Magens Bay, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in the world. For snorkeling or diving, head to Coki Beach instead.

St. John is Best for: Hiking, nature watching, and solitude

You won’t find crowds on St. John. That’s because the island doesn’t have a major airport -- most people take a ferry from St. Thomas, roughly three miles away -- and because nearly two-thirds of the island is protected as a national park . Once you get there, you won't find much in the way of public transit, shopping, or dining options, either.

What to do on St. John Island

But, if you’re looking for a tucked-away outdoor adventure or a romantic getaway, St. John is it. Hike the trails from the beach to the mountain top, snorkel the underwater trail at Trunk Bay, or explore the remains of sugar plantations in Virgin Islands National Park. Fishing and diving are also popular activities. Plus, once you get there, staying can be pretty affordable.

St. Croix is Best for: Culture, history, and food

Although it’s the largest of the three islands, St. Croix sees the fewest tourists, making it a great destination if you want a less commercialized Caribbean experience. We recommend basing your visit out of Christiansted, where you can tour the historic fort and catch a boat to nearby Buck Island for snorkeling at one of the only three underwater national monuments in the United States. St. Croix is also home to Cruzan Rum and Captain Morgan Rum (both of which offer tours and samples) and the Estate Whim Plantation Museum. You’ll also want to set aside one evening to kayak the Bioluminescent Bay--it's stunning. 

What to do on St. Croix Island:

When it comes to things to do on St. Croix , options abound. If you’re a foodie who likes to explore the local offerings, book a table in the courtyard at Savant . For a quick bite, try one of the smaller roadside restaurants serving chicken or roti (curry wrapped in a flatbread).

This is definitely not the cheapest place to visit. Prices tend to be high for transportation, dining, and accommodations . Some see visiting by way of a cruise to be the most economical way to see these islands. The downside is that your time here will be limited.

Whether or not you land here on a cruise itinerary, there are some wonderful experiences to be enjoyed for budget travelers who know what they want to do and have a strategy for maximizing their investment to reach these lovely shores.

For example, during 2017 the local government offered travel vouchers for those who visited in recognition of the 100th anniversary year for the transfer of these islands from Danish to United States possession. The idea was to promote history and culture.

The vouchers were a nice start, but consider a few more tips for visiting this gem in the Eastern Caribbean without spending a fortune.

St. John Escape

The island of St. Thomas is vibrant and bustling with tourism. Nearby St. John is largely a national park with miles of forest and unspoiled beach. Most visitors arrive on St. Thomas and never make it to the island's less populated neighbor, and that's a shame.

Getting to St. John takes time, effort, and money, so it's a bit of a budget travel splurge. But if you love quiet beauty, it is an investment in a perfect day you're unlikely to forget. From the tiny and picturesque port of Cruz Bay, drivers will take you to hiking points or the famous white beaches. Trunk Bay is a popular choice. It offers a marked snorkeling trail that is a bit worn but beautiful nonetheless.

Because of their volcanic origins, many parts of the Caribbean feature black or dark gray sand. The U.S. Virgin Islands are famous for beaches with picture-postcard white sand and strikingly blue waters.

On St. Thomas, Magens Bay is well-known, but you can find other places that are equally beautiful and perhaps less crowded. Coki and Cinnamon Bay beaches also get rave reviews. Pick the one that appeals to your interests, negotiate a cab ride with the nearest driver, and go. You'll be enjoying the best that these islands have to offer.

At first glance, day sailing or a yacht charter may appear extravagant for a budget traveler. Indeed, it's probably not a prime choice for those on a tight budget, but consider the activities that can be enjoyed with this initial investment before you dismiss the idea.

Scenic Tours

The views across these islands are spectacular, but the driving is an adventure. Although a territory of the United States, driving on the left is the rule. Many roads are narrow and winding.

In short, renting a car here could be a bit unnerving. Want evidence? Take a taxi from Charlotte Amalie to Red Hook. After that eight-mile route that bends every few feet, those willing to get behind the wheel should visit the rental office.

If you take a taxi, remember that rates are set by the local government and tend to be high. But you can negotiate with a driver for a two-hour tour that takes you to attractions of your choosing.

If you prefer an aerial or aquatic view, there are also many air and scuba tours to choose from.
