The influence of Journey to the West can be seen across multiple forms of media, with the transcedent tale being the main source of inspiration for films, manga, and video games. One of these upcoming creations comes all the way from Madrid, Spain.

The Crown of Wu is an action-adventure game inspired by the Chinese legend of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. A narrative full of mythology, action, combat and fun, it is developed by Red Mountain, supported by Gammera Nest and the PlayStation Talents educational initiative.

Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, is the star of this new video game spin on Journey to the West. The novel was chosen by the Red Moutain development studio as it features magic and mythology, which translates well into combat and parkour mechanics.

The Crown of Wu places its narrative approach firmly between mythology and science fiction, with the player embodying the Monkey King himself. Imprisoned for centuries for his crimes, Wukong is released and players must recover his lost crown to save the world from destruction.

In battle, Sun Wukong masters the powers of fire, air, earth and lightning, with the player having to learn to control these elements against multiple enemies through a simple and intuitive combat system.

This modern take on Journey to the West also opens itself up to a world where players can make use of Wukong’s agility to overcome the environment as well as use the Monkey King’s cunning mind to solve puzzles that pave the way to the crown.

Black Myth: Why Journey to the West is PERFECT For Video Game Adaptations

Age is no reason to ignore a possible source of adaptation like Journey to the West . Here's 5 reasons why it is still perfect for adaptation.

Adaptations have always been a part of video games. Developers have taken stories and themes from many sources. Recently a Chinese developer Game Science Interactive Technology Co , announced that they were releasing a new adaptation of   Journey to the West called Black Myth: Wukong . While this isn't the first time that the series has been adapted, it does reinforce the text as being perfect for games, but why is that?

Journey to the West was published in the 16th century, and the writer Wu Cheng'en is considered by many to be the original writer. The story follows the monk Tang Sanzang as he travels from the lands in the East to the lands in the West. On his journey, he is joined by the Monkey King Sun Wukong. An iconic piece of literature that has inspired countless stories, Journey to the West is perfect for video games.

The world that is set out in the Journey to the West is one filled with gods and magic . The lands that the party travel through are varied, with huge mountains and massive inland seas. This world has humans rub shoulders with demons as giants stomp across vast valleys. The geography itself is never constant either, with Wukong and the monk traveling across mountains, forests and deserts on their journey.

Video games work if their locations are epic but retain a level of realism. For instance, the giant snake in Sekiro was amazing in part because the area had been designed with it in mind. In the few trailers we have seen for Black Myth, there have been numerous different locations on display. There are vast rocky deserts, perilous mountains and even the clouds of heaven. The locations created in the book allow for perfect arenas for players to explore .

The Enemies

The majority of foes that Sun Wukong faces in the original text are demons, but that isn't as stifling as it sounds. The demons are a varied foe, with no two looking exactly the same. Some creatures resemble animals, some that are a living desert and all manner in-between. Wukong has also, in his own history, taken on the very armies of the heavens themselves. The battles described are magical, full of action and are as exciting to read as they would be to play.

So far,  Black Myth has shown several different enemy types. We've seen strange animal-like humans, oddly deformed giants and towering bugs. The gameplay trailer has a boss fight against a beautifully animated wolf-like creature. The books have a wealth of art that could give developers a huge library of fascinating and varied creatures for the player to battle.

The Powers of a Monkey King

Sun Wukong in the original text is one of the most powerful creatures to ever exist . Due in part to his trickery and skills, he earns immortality, super strength, shape-shifting, clones, a flying cloud and a shape-changing staff, to name a few. Part of the story is his constant fighting against the demons and the actions of the heavens to try and find some way to control him.

Black Myth has given some insight into the kind of abilities their Wukong possesses. We see him turn into numerous different forms. We see him create a group of clones to battle a boss and even see him ride his flying cloud. All of his skills would allow for varied and interesting gameplay. Players love having a varied set of abilities, and Sun Wukong certainly has that and more.

Sun Wukong's Journey

Sun Wukong could never be described as a simple character. In the original text, he shows various emotions and reactions that could be easily understood and even empathized within our modern time. He is never truly evil , but he does have a short attention span and more power than he really knows what to do with.

Black Myth hasn't given us much regarding the story or the protagonist's character, but there is a wealth of information available and numerous ways to show it. If the developers followed the main story, they could show the monkey king at both his most hubristic and his most deferential. A good story requires the character to grow and change, and Journey to the West has that in spades.

Familiar, yet Different

Journey to the West is not that well known in the Western world, at least in terms of the actual text and story. However, aspects of it have been adapted into numerous different media that we know and cherish. One example of this would be  Son Goku , who shares many traits with Sun Wukong and is often considered an homage to the character. We know the character, yet we don't know him in this form.

This allows developers to show something new but at the same time make it somewhat familiar. The lore behind Journey to the West is deep, and as such, can seem a bit impossible to understand at first, but having recognizable characters can lessen that. Hopefully, Black Myth gives the players the information they need while relying on the familiarity of the characters to make everything more digestible.

One reason for adaptation is using a known story and allowing people to experience it differently.  Journey to the West is one of the premier pieces of literature, and it is perfect for adaptation, not only because of the world and the creatures in it but also for what it could teach. Black Myth has a chance to show a side of the culture not often seen in western media , and from what we've seen so far, it is succeeding in creating an interesting world for players. Let's hope more developers see Journey to the West as the great source of potential new stories that it is.

• Many video games draw inspiration from books, not just movies and TV shows. Classic literature can provide rich material for game developers to adapt and create new narratives.

J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and other Middle-earth novels are among the greatest literary works of all time. The world of Men, Elves, Dwarves, and other creatures is so rich in detail, history, and culture that fans could swear it was real. At the center of it all, however, are poignant tales of humble heroes triumphing over evil and power corrupting the noblest individuals. These traits are a reliable guide for any narrative. It's partially why so many LOTR games exist, even if most of them use the aesthetic of Peter Jackson's movies.

On the other hand, The Lord of the Rings Online takes inspiration directly from the books. This MMORPG makes players a pivotal part of the War of the Ring. Their deeds have a tremendous impact on events in the mainline trilogy, both on the frontlines and behind the scenes. That's because the narrative tackles the northern conflict and other plot threads described in supplementary works . One of the great faces of horror is Count Dracula. In Bram Stoker's novel, the vampire terrorizes Victorian London, drinking the blood of innocents and corrupting others into his soulless servants. All of it is to slake his constant thirst and desire for conquest. As effective as he is, the villain transcends the source material and appears in several works outside his original book.

One of these is Castlevania . This action platformer series sees players try to vanquish the evil count in his home. The gothic castles and other haunted settings make for eye-popping level design, and it's always fun to slay classic horror monsters with a trusty whip. Despite these strengths, loyalists may take issue with some of these games .

Castlevania is selective in how it adapts Bram Stoker's book. Dracula is the overarching villain, and his castle still lies in Transylvania. Yet instead of using Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray as protagonists, the narratives follow the vampire-slaying Belmont clan.

That said, some series entries incorporate more elements of the source material than others. For instance, John Morris of Castlevania: Bloodlines is the son of the novel's Quincy Morris. The series has also included characters from other scary stories, such as the titular vampire from Carmilla and the monster from Frankenstein . For these reasons, Castlevania is more of a horror highlight reel than a direct translation.

The Witcher series is another rich fantasy realm, albeit one rife with racial strife and international conflict. The books, written by Andrzei Sapkowski, follow Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster slayer who desperately tries to maintain his neutrality. That aim becomes increasingly difficult amid moral and ethical dilemmas, and it's virtually impossible when these dilemmas threaten the people he cares about. While the books may not be decades old, they are highly regarded as some of the best examples of Polish literature of all time.

Fans feel that conflict in The Witcher games. These titles present complex plots involving ambitious power plays, crushing betrayals, and inner turmoil. They technically take place after the books, but they maintain many of the same characters. In addition, they carry similar themes about the price of neutrality and choosing the lesser evil .

It all culminates in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . This is a sprawling sandbox encompassing more of Sapkowski's world than ever before. The game has countless quests to complete, and these are all engaging in how they respect the novels' cynical messages and moral ambiguity. More importantly, the title brings Geralt's journey to a satisfying conclusion by reuniting him with his surrogate family. In the end, he shapes a meaningful legacy beyond being just a Witcher.

One might expect this sci-fi title to have similar sci-fi roots, but Enslaved: Odyssey to the West actually takes inspiration from a classic Chinese folktale: Journey to the West . The classic story chronicles a Buddhist monk's pilgrimage to retrieve a set of sacred scrolls from India. He encounters various demons and other obstacles, and his only defenses are his companions--all inspired by animals like a monkey and a pig. The timeless tale has inspired numerous other stories in fiction.

It also forms the backbone of Enslaved . The game may lack a monk, but it does have Trip, a girl wishing to return to her faraway village. She receives reluctant aid from a couple of unscrupulous individuals: Monkey and Pigsy. In a nod to its Asian roots, the former sports a staff for both melee and ranged combat. It also facilitates some enjoyable (if derivative) platforming. The real attraction, though, is the story.

Enslaved evolves the narrative's themes of finding enlightenment, maturity, and redemption. These emerge not just through the compelling characters and their growing bond, but also via the concept of slavery. In an uncertain world, some people may prefer the solace and blissful ignorance of servitude. Who wants to "enlighten" themselves and face reality in an apocalypse ? The plot puts an unsettling twist on the usual quest for freedom, and it's a journey that not everyone would embark on.

Very little hype was given to this game leading up to its release, but Spec Ops: The Line quickly became an under-the-radar hit thanks to its hard-hitting narrative about the moral grayness and psychological depravity of warfare. A standard third-person military shooter on the surface, Spec Ops hid a much deeper game underneath.

What many don't know is that Spec Ops is based on the Joseph Conrad novella Heart of Darkness. The same story that inspired the classic Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now, Spec Ops' Captain Walker is essentially a reversal of the novella's protagonist, Charles Marlow, with Walker becoming more akin to the novella's eventual antagonist, Kurtz (or Konrad in the game, a play on the name of the original author), by the game's conclusion.

The themes of civilian casualties, the trauma of war, and the flaws of the American war machine's presence abroad that made Apocalypse Now so affecting are all present in Spec Ops: The Line , and while the story is a bit less philosophical than its inspirations, those inspirations still shine through.
