Travel through time: 5 immersive virtual reality experiences in Rome

It’s not always easy trying to imagine how things looked like thousands of years ago. And this goes for wonderfully preserved monuments like the Colosseum as well. As many know, the Colosseum was once a stadium for gladiator contests and public spectacles. But how was the Colosseum really 2000 years ago? With the new animated and interactive 3D reconstruction , you can now live the Colosseum like it was back in the day. With this Colosseum Virtual Reality experience , you’ll get a skip-the-line ticket into the Colosseum Archeological park plus last generation Samsung Oculus VR to virtually immerse yourself in ancient Rome. Inside the arena, you will immerse yourself between the roar of the lions and gladiators fighting; as well as into various 3D corridors of the mysterious underground  area of the Colosseum where slaves prepared the shows and hungry animals were ready to be let into the arena. It will be unlike any experience you’ve ever had, equipped with an audio guide in English, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese and French.

domus_aurea_rome

Erected by Emperor Nero in 64AD, the Domus Aurea , also known as the Golden House, was an opulent imperial residence that sprawled from the Palatine Hill to the Colle Oppio and Caelius Mountain. At its peak, the Domus boasted gardens, woods, and even artificial lake, statues hailing from Greece and Asia Minor, gold and marble from Egypt and the Middle East, and even a grandiose, octagonal chamber with a domed roof graced the grounds. The palace was inhabited until it was damaged in 104 AD by a wildfire. Legendary artists of the Renaissance, Raphael among them, made pilgrimages to the site, studying and later recreating the Domus’s motifs and designs in their own work. Fast forward to the present century: after extensive renovation, the palace finally opened its gates to visitors in 2014 offering virtual reality tours . With the aid of visual headsets, the 3D, multimedia experience provides a glimpse into how the Domus looked in its heyday, resurrecting Nero’s elaborate frescoes.

Palazzo Valentini's Domus Romane

In Rome, we walk by hidden treasures everyday without giving them a second thought; however, the unassertive yet noble  Palazzo Valentini’s Domus Romane is a must-see you should not ignore. The main floor is open to the public and uncovers the Domus Romane – the archeological remains of homes belonging to the wealthy families of Imperial Rome. The virtual tour is a mix of history and wonder: exquisite relics of finely detailed mosaic floors to colossal marble columns, and vast kitchens to private saunas are displayed beneath your feet. The glass floors allow you to look down into the superior archeological relics while the enchanting lighting and knowledgeable guide bring them back to life. The comprehensive tour walks you through the design of the Trajan column, as well as the history of the Roman Empire, tempting you to visit the real thing just outside.

Who among us has never wished to take a trip back in time to discover how a place looked centuries and centuries ago? Thanks to the exhibition Imperial Rome – Virtual Reality Bus , it will be possible to admire, on board a small electric bus, the three-dimensional reconstruction of the ancient monuments of the Capital. This is a 3D immersive experience tour , due to special “visor free” VR technology. All reconstructions of the architecture are enjoyed directly on OLED screens superimposed on the windows of the bus. All of this is supported by sounds, music and an integrated fragrance emission system, in order to ensure a truly immersive experience. And from the chance to make some virtual museum visits as well as virtual Rome tours introducing you to the city, not to mention being able to travel back in time to Ancient Rome, you’re not short of armchair travel inspiration.

Virtual tour of Rome

Several companies have made virtual Rome tour videos, using 360 videos and some VR technology – mostly covering the city’s highlights so you can pick the one whose commentary you prefer.

This 360-degree video tour from You Visit lets you pick your own sights and attractions, or you can simply let it play through.

Otherwise try this virtual tour of Rome lasting less than five minutes while this slightly longer tour is designed to be experienced using VR headsets, although you can also watch the 360-degree video on YouTube.

Virtual Rome sights

If you prefer to flick through Rome’s key sites at your own pace, the Google Arts & Culture project has a slideshow of some of the city’s highlights including more background.

It’s not interactive beyond that, so if you’re looking for more of a virtual Rome tour of some of the museums, scroll down.

Ancient Rome

Alternatively you can step back in time to discover Rome as it once was – a sight which you can only see virtually these days, with the Rome Reborn initiative.

Designed to be viewed on computers and VR headsets, you can explore the ancient city with computer reconstructions of the buildings and monuments, accompanied by a commentary from experts.

The free trial is over but you can still pay to explore sites like the Roman Forum . Still cheaper than a plane ticket, and a great introduction if you’re planning a city break in Rome.

Rome Street art

While Rome’s historic attractions are one of its biggest draws, there are plenty of modern temptations among the ancient.

Take a street art tour to discover some of the more recent artworks adorning the Eternal City – there are two to try: click here or here .

Virtual Rome art & culture

Take a walk through the Sistine chapel, wander Trajan’s markets or marvel at the roof of the Pantheon, all from the virtual comfort of your armchair.

Google’s arts and culture project is another great place to start to check out some of Rome’s landmarks and museums – you can see the complete set here as well as those which more detailed virtual tours to scroll for more but here are some of the highlights.

View of the Colosseum in Rome against a blue sky, with a tree in shot - the ultimate virtual bucket list experiences

Take a virtual tour of the Colosseum – you’re limited as to how much you can see inside, but there are several options to explore the exterior online.

Take your first view from the sky , looking down onto the remains of the structure, built to seat 80,000 people, with this 360-degree aerial view.

Then soak up the sight of the world’s largest amphitheatre in the Italian sun before getting a little closer to the structure . Finally head inside to get a closer glimpse of the Colosseum’s interior .

Trevi fountain

The legend says that if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain, you’ll return to Rome – throwing two or three should also bring you love and marriage.

While you can’t lob a Euro into the water virtually, you can still get a look at the largest Baroque fountain in the city – and be secretly thankful you don’t have to battle the crowds.

The Pantheon

This former Roman temple, now a Catholic church, is famous for both its dome – still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome, 2,000 years after it was built – and for the oculus, the opening to the sky in the centre of it. This 360-degree video lets you look up at the famous ceiling and imagine the building soaring overhead.

Roman Forum

Take a look down into the remains of the Roman Forum , once the heart of Ancient Rome.

The ruins of the buildings and temples in the Roman Forum, one of the places to explore on a virtual tour of Rome

Trajan’s Market

While most visitors flock to the Roman Forum, the Mercati di Traiano is another fascinating spot to wander around, and you can get a virtual tour of Rome’s Trajan’s Market too. The Google arts and culture tour is more detailed than some of the other better-known historic sites, letting you virtually walk through as well as exploring some of the objects on display.

Even better is the museum’s own virtual tour – you need flash player to make this work – which lets you virtually wander through the halls before heading outside.

Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is only one part of the Vatican Museums Virtual Tour that you can take but it’s easily one of the highlights – watching online, you can see as much detail as you’d like in the chapel , and there’s no fast-moving queue to shuttle you out too quickly either.

The Vatican museums currently have 360-degree video tours of seven different rooms , including the astonishing art work of Raphael’s Rooms.

There’s also an impressive virtual tour of St Peter’s Basilica letting you see the famous church’s details but also giving an impression of the soaring grandeur of the nave.

Capitoline Museum

Take a virtual tour of Rome’s Musei Capitolini, the art museum set on top of the Campidoglio hill. The museum has its own virtual tour (using flash) where you can wander through the halls as well as looking around the Campidoglio square as well.

Or try the Google Arts and Culture tour which gives you a little more detail, so you can look at some of the pieces on display inside the museum.

Museo dell’Ara Pacis virtual tour

The huge altar of the Ara Pacis might not be Rome’s best known sculpture, but it’s perfect for a virtual tour. The museum itself has its own 360-degree video to help you look around.

Or Google Arts and Culture has another virtual tour allowing you to see close up, along with some history about the inspiration behind the 2,000-year-old altar celebrating the military campaigns of Augustus.

Teatro dell’Opera in Rome

Step inside the opera house to take a look around, hear from its director and get a glimpse of performances.

Other virtual Rome museums

Discover ancient mosaics and Roman statues in the Centrale Montemartini , a museum set in an older power station.

Explore more relics of Ancient Rome as you learn about Roman culture at the Museo della Civilta Romana .

Learn more about a very different emperor at Rome’s Museo Napoleonico , dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte.

Travel back in time to see rome's landmarks as they looked in the fourth century ..

The narrated tour in English, available as an app or online at Yorescape , digitally reconstructs Rome as it appeared at its peak in 320 AD, a decade before Emperor Constantine moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Constantinople.

The 3D rendering features a bird's eye view of more than 40 landmarks including the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus, the Mausoleum of Augustus, the Pantheon and the Baths of Caracalla.

On Wednesday, November 8, Flyover Zone is releasing Rome Reborn 4.0, our digital reconstruction of ancient Rome! Take our new virtual tour, "Flight over Ancient Rome" on our app, Yorescape- free for one week: https://t.co/BMqq36TMPO pic.twitter.com/zLMRV0Xm0V — Flyover Zone | virtual tourism (@flyover_zone) November 3, 2023

Professor Frischer says the 'Flight over Ancient Rome' tour is designed for both academic study and virtual tourism, describing it as the “culmination of more than 27 years of historical research applied to the use of innovative digital tools”.

“We hope to make it easy and fun for people to learn about ancient Rome and its cultural heritage," Frischer told Italian news agency ANSA, adding that the virtual tour can help tourists prepare for their visit to the Eternal City as well as keep their memories alive once they return home.

9:00 AM 11:00 AM 1:00 PM

Take part in a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour and start your journey in Ancient Rome . Join the group and set off with a tour guide to discover the Colosseum .

The Colosseum is the largest and most famous Roman amphitheater in the world. Through an exciting, fun and immersive 3D experience, learning its long history has never been easier. It is an experience suitable for all age groups. This way you will give shape and color to your imagination.

What to see in Colosseum Virtual Reality Tour

Meet your tour guide and listen to his or her instructions to make the most of the headset. Trace the history of the Colosseum through three distinct areas: the square; the arena; and finally the Colosseum underground .

With our animated 3D reconstruction complemented by professional multilingual music and audio, exploring the Colosseum has never been more fun! All the contents within the reconstruction that you will observe, were handled by the well-known Prof. Filippo Coarelli and by the Digilab Archeo & Arte3D department of the La Sapienza University of Rome .

By taking part in a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour , you will find yourself, in other words, walking virtually in the ancient square of the Colosseum ; you can then admire the fountain of the gladiators, the Meta Sudans; the Temple of Venus and Rome; the majestic Colossus of Nero from which the name “ Colosseum ” derives; and the Arch of Constantine , in all its grandeur.

In the Arena Floor Colosseum , raise your head towards the Velarium, its gigantic red curtain that closes to start the show; he walks among the roar of ferocious lions; then witness the fights between gladiators ; to conclude, he puts on the emperor’s robes and takes his place. Decide the fate of the wounded gladiator with: “Death” or “Grace”! To conclude the experience, descend into the mysterious Colosseum underground to observe the slaves moving in silence between narrow and dark corridors, ready to prepare all the tools necessary to make the show a success. If you look around you will notice the gladiators sharpening their weapons and the various cages in which the hungry beasts wait to be lifted from the elevators inside the arena.

Once you enter the Colosseum…

The time has come to discover what is left today of all the structure you have seen in Virtual Reality .

Together with your tour guid e, enter the most famous monument in the world, the Flavian Amphitheater. Thanks to a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour , avoid the long queues thanks to the Colosseum Ticket Skip the Line . After the security checks, let its magic overwhelm you completely. Hear the stories about its construction, which took place over 8 years; take unforgettable photos; and finally, close your eyes imagining you are there.

Observe every little detail. The shiny white marbles that covered the floor; the ceiling richly decorated with sculptures and frescoes; go up to the first level and look out to observe the ancient structure of the Ludus Magnus, the gymnasium of the gladiators ; find out where the senators sat; crosses the museum, with all its archaeological evidence. So live it; observe it; and imagine it. Your tour guide will be at your complete disposal to answer any questions or concerns.

Once the Colosseum Guided Tour is over, you will be given directions to continue the visit in total autonomy within the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill . Are you still eager to delve into your journey into the history of Ancient Rome , follow your tour guide at the entrance. Using the same Colosseum Ticket Skip the Line , if you wish, you can continue exploring the magnificent temples of Rome ; the columns; the triumphal arches and the sumptuous Domus of the emperor Domitian.

Before leaving, you will have all the information you need to be able to continue alone in the Roman Forum and on the Palatine Hill . In conclusion, take part in a Colosseum Virtual Reality Guided Tour and go home having lived an unforgettable experience!

Bellissima esperienza!!

Virtual Tour

Explore the past centuries of rome’s history in one extraordinary complex of buildings, level 1 at 360°, the upper basilica.

Our tour begins in the upper 12th century Basilica where one is immediately struck by the Mosaic of the Apse and the wonderful pavement, with its great variety of ancient Roman marble, carved into a wonderful pattern of Cosmatesque work. In the centre of the church there is the unusual marble choir. Though the choir in its present form, with two ambos for the readings and twisted column for the paschal candle, is medieval, the panels of the choir were carved in Constantinople in the 6th century. Here in the 12th century basilica we see side chapels of different periods, the most famous being that of St Catherine where we witness the dawn of the Renaissance in the work of the 15th century Masolino da Panicale.

Tour Description

Meet your guide: caterina.

Hi I'm Caterina. I am a licensed guide of the city of Rome, and have been working with Through Eternity Tours since 2010. I was born and raised in Rome, where I've lived most of my life. I received a degree in Art History from Rome Tre University, where I specialised in Renaissance and Baroque art. I speak English, German and Italian fluently.

What Exactly is a Through Eternity Virtual Tour?

The world of travel might be on hold right now, but just because we're all staying at home to help the world overcome a common enemy doesn't mean we have to put our wanderlust on the back burner. Frustrated with not being able to get our travel fix, we decided to transform our award-winning tours into immersive virtual experiences, meaning you can still explore Italy’s spectacular archaeological sites and jaw-dropping museums from the comfort of your own home.

* Please note that the booking times are in US Eastern Standard Time and Rome, Italy CET is 6 hours ahead *

Fun and informative , our virtual tours take the form of online  real-time presentations  led by our  expert guides . Combining videos, high-definition photos and more, our guides will be sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience with you on these interactive walkthroughs of Italy’s most fascinating sites. The  live format  of our virtual tours means you’ll be able to ask your guide anything you wish, just like on a normal tour. We really believe it's the next best thing to being here!

As a sign of our gratitude to those who are on the front line fighting the Coronavirus, we would be more than happy to invite all first responders , health workers and NHS workers to join our Virtual Tours for free. Please message our office staff directly!

Please note that the proceeds from our online tours go directly to our guides, providing them with a valuable lifeline in these tough times for the world of travel. Thank you for your support!

Embark on a journey to ancient Rome on our virtual Forum tour

If you want to understand what Rome was like in antiquity, then you need to get to grips with the Roman Forum . The political heart of ancient Rome , history is alive in this complex labyrinth of temples , buildings and cobbled streets . Join our resident expert  Caterina  on a journey of discovery back to the heyday of the bustling ancient metropolis, which incredibly reached a population of one million inhabitants in the first century AD.

On our virtual exploration of the Roman Forum, Caterina will help you piece together this fascinating puzzle of ruins . We'll start our journey with the earliest Roman settlements here in the bronze age, before tracing the Forum's story as it rose in importance to become the most significant meeting place in the ancient world. Learn about the Romans from all walks of life who lived and worked here; meet the politicians and orators who made their mark in the ancient senate , and learn about the dictators and emperors who forged the ancient world’s greatest empire.

Relive the intrigues of antiquity and learn how the city’s denizens bid an emotional farewell to the assassinated Julius Caesar as he burned on his funeral pyre in 44BC, plunging the empire into civil war. Learn too of Cicero , decapitated here in the bloody aftermath, executed as an enemy of the state with his hands, tongue and head nailed to the Rostrum as a warning.

You’ll also get the lowdown on the complex world of Rome’s pagan religions as we reconstruct magnificent temples like the Temple of Saturn . Learn about the privileged yet often tragic lives of the Vestal Virgins whose task it was to keep the city’s eternal flame forever lit, and discover the dark fate that awaited priestesses who broke their solemn vows of chastity .

As we continue our virtual stroll through the Forum, we’ll relive the triumphal parades that took place on the Via Sacra and decipher the carvings on the magnificent Arch of Titus , which vividly depict the brutal triumphs of the Roman Empire in Jerusalem - including the plundering of its priceless Temple, whose spoils paid for the Colosseum.

Thanks to videos and high-resolution photographs, virtual reconstructions and, above all, the expertise of our expert guide, we believe that our virtual tour of the Roman Forum is the next best thing to being there in person. So join Caterina today, and scratch that travel itch from the comfort of your own home!

Tour Reviews

4.9 (10 reviews)

Being born in Tivoli, not far from Rome, I believed that I would not discover many new things about this city during the virtual tour. But I soon had to change my mind: Caterina was absolutely brilliant, I was impressed! She told many curious, exciting aspects about Rome in a very pleasant way, putting everyone at ease. It was a beautiful moment of escape from everyday life. I can't wait to go back to Rome and visit it with her.

Beatrice - Feb 03, 2021

Caterina was an excellent tour guide to the Roman Forum and its famous ruins. She had excellent visual aids that helped us see what the Forum looked liked and how it functioned at its peak. Her explanations were clear, concise, and fascinating, with just the right amount of background. We highly recommend her tour!
