Terra Nova Voyager

rated 3.5 of 5 stars

Wonderful four-season backpacking tent with many strengths and few weak points.

  • Excellent balance of size, weight, strength, and weatherproofing
  • Very stable in strong wind, a proper 3-4 season tent
  • Self supporting so easy to turn into the wind
  • Totally waterproof
  • Somewhat cramped for two (but wonderful solo tent)
  • Relatively small porch
  • Lack of vents in fly (but inner well ventilated)

Excellent balance of size, weight, portability, strength, and weatherproofing.

While noting one negative review here about damage in strong wind, I have found the tent to be very stable provided it is pitched with the rear end into the wind (and as it is self-supporting it can be turned into the wind easily if conditions change). Stability can be increased still further by adding two extra guys to the optional attachment points on the fly (highly recommended).

Fly and groundsheet are very well waterproofed. I would have liked to seen perhaps a couple of external vents in the fly, which is somewhat susceptible to condensation. However, the inner tent is well ventilated (and this can be adjusted from inside) and I have never had a problem with excess condensation in the main living space.

Realistically, this is a 1-2 person tent. Somewhat cramped for two with a relatively small porch, but makes a wonderful spacious but still portable solo tent.

Probably THE best tent you could buy for three or four season mountaineering.

Really easy and quick to put up has it has three poles, all equal in length which slide into the sleeves of the inner.

The outer is then literally thrown over the inner and attached to through the same sleeves as the inner.

Lots of space inside for two people, certainly more than other 4 season mountaineering tests I have. Has one door with a two way zip, which means that if you want to get out of the tent in bad weather you don't have to open the whole door area, letting the weather in.

Have used it in Scotland in the winter with winds in excess of 80mph and though it swayed a little and one of the poles is slightly bend, it held up very well fairly light at 2.5kg (standard version).

My only comment is that the light version, seems to have a very thin fly.

I was given one which was 20yrs old, which i replaced after 8 yrs, the new version seems to be exactly the same as the old.

As a result all 5 of my climbing buddies over the last 2-5 yrs have also replaced their tents with a Voyager.

Some may say that not having 2 doors may be a slight downfall. I say that the simple the tent and the less sips, widgets and gadgets it has, the longer its going to last. Zips on any tent are generally the first thing that wear out

Buy it, and you won't have any regrets.

I have had this tent the Terra Nova Voyager for just under a year now, mostly taken out in fair weather. I decided to camp on top of Pen-y-fan 11/04/15. The wind conditions were moderate to strong at the time, but with this being rated a 4-season tent I was confident it would withstand the weather being thrown at it, but boy was I wrong. The arch pole over the door kept being blown back onto the tent and me inside all night. Despite being pitched correctly the result in the morning was a broken pole and where the red pole sits over the two blue horizontal poles it had rubbed holes in both pole sleeves and the stitching inside was tearing through the inner tent where the pole sleeves attach. Now I cannot insert the poles through the sleeves without them coming through the holes. I contacted Terra Nova about this. They were useless. After many emails and pictures of the damage were sent I had to send it off to them—two weeks for them to look at it and after they made a decision another 2-3 weeks for them to repair it at, my expense when it is clearly a design fault as there is no reinforcement protection where the poles overlap on the front of the tent but there is protection on the rear. Truly disappointed in their poor customer service. I expected more form a British company. I have lost faith in their products and will buy a Hilleberg for a better experience .

This tent has just enough room for two with good campcraft, and for one it is still easily light enough. Good porch space and the door arrangement is excellent for (careful) cooking.

The pole sheaths are not continuous, which adds a little hassle, but makes it lighter.

Apart from a force 8 storm (after which the poles had to be straightened) and a trip across a mountain (someone forgot to hold on) (some patching needed), this has been a superb tent, and sharing it has inspired others to buy their own.

Design : 3 season Sleeps : 2 Ease of Setup : Easily and quickly erected, even solo Weight : 2.7kg(?) Price Paid: £250-ish

I brought this tent as a two-person although it would peform better as a one-person if you have equipment. This could be improved with a larger porch area. The tent pitches inner first so it can pose difficulties if it is raining. The tent is very well made from the best of materials and is able to withstand the worst of weathers. Packs away very easily.

Design : three season Sleeps : 2 Ease of Setup : Fairly straight forward Weight : 2.8 kg Price Paid: £299

  • Terra Nova Voyager Superlite – any good?

Just wondered if anyone has one, and what they’re like/how they perform, especially in terms of space for two adults, stability and waterproofness? And did you seal the seams, because they don’t come sealed. I’m after a lightweight tent that’s reasonably stable for 3 season mtb touring, and I reckon I’m better or off splitting Superlite with a mate rather than buying a Laser Comp and carrying it myself. Any thoughts? Ta v much.

I bought one last winter and absolutely love it. Used it around 15 times and there is usually two of us in there and never had too much of a problems getting all the kit in.

There are some really useful features and it a great design. I have spent a couple on night in Laser Comp and they are great until the weather turns for the worse. From memory the weight penalty was about 700gms which it well worth it when your tent doesn’t collapse on you in a storm!

Thanks SJ – useful to know. Have you had any issues with water getting in? I know they’re not factory seam sealed, and some folk seal them as soon as they buy the tent. I don’t want shell out a ton of cash for a tent that isn’t properly waterproof. Thanks again.

Humix

Seems (pun, sorry!) to be common that the seams aren’t sealed. Dunno why that is, maybe due to costs or space – I have heard the tent needs to be left up for 24 hrs or longer to let the sealant dry.

Been looking for a tent myself recently, but a 1 man. Tarptent appear to be very highly rated, possibly more spacious, better in foul weather, and better handling of condensation. This is the one you’d want for 2 man – http://www.tarptent.com/scarp2.html – have to import from the states though.

thinking about a superlight voyager myself… as i have a few wild camping trips in the planning stages for this year..

anyone got any pictures of theirs in use?

can two people sit up inside?

There used to be a notion that heat-taping damaged the nylon in the longterm. Macpac never used to seal theirs either IIRC.

No one else got a Superlite they can tell me about?

Never had a problem with it letting the rain! Used it for three days in the Gower this summer and it chucked it down the whole time but never let water in.

I am 5′ 10″ and my Mrs is the same and we can get us both in there, both sleeping on 3/4 Thermarest. Used it early Dec where we where both in big down sleeping bags and both carrying 45ltr bags and it wasn’t too cramped. Porch is big enough to store your boots and setup the stove for making a brew when the weather is miserable.

I got mine from Taunton Leisure as they had the best deal on at the time, not sure if that is still the case.

Here are the only two photo’s I have of the tent. One from the Gower and the other in my front room to test how big it was!

If anyone who wants one live in or around Bristol you are more than welcome to pop round and take a look

Cheers SJ – nice offer, but I’m up north. Still, good to know yours has been fine. Looks slightly smallish inside for a 2-man, but I guess that’s the price you pay for featherweight. I’ll probably bag one this week. Ta for your help.

Have got the regular version rather than the superlight. Can only echo what other folks have said really – really great little tent. I have bought the groundsheet protector as the groundsheet does seem very thin – may be even thinner/lighter on the superlight, so if you’re going to be pitching on anything a bit rough, it could be worthwhile.

BTW – 30% off if you trade in your old tent:

http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/Product_Information/Tent_Trade_In.html

Thanks for the photos Jamie!

they are just the images ive been searching the net for for the past month! especially the 2nd with someone inside..!

i shall be clicking the buy button at some point in the future! 😀

I’m also after the same tent, after much research I’ve decided to go for the Terra Nova Superlite Voyager… However can’t decide where to buy it from as every different website I go on its a different prices and can range from like £270 – 300/400, not sure if this is becuase their are different year makes or not as they never mention what year it is. Noticed theres 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011 ones!

Anyone recommend a certain web?

Voyager superlight review

I think the taped seams thing is to do with silicone elastomer coatings. You can’t adhere tape to these, so the fabrics which have this on the inside can’t be taped and you need to periodically seam seal them with sealant. I have a 10 year (ish) old Ultra Voyager which has a version of their watershed fabric which has PU inside and silicone elastomer outside. The seams are taped. Assuming the design hasn’t changed much over the years, it’s a fantastic little tent, but there isn’t a huge amount of room for two people with kit, especially in poor weather.

For those looking for tarp tents, good uk stockist here

http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=RrzKj&page_id=91594&v=6h

Peter Jones really doesn’t rate this tent and I really rate his opinion.

I see MSP already posted that review…I wouldn’t buy one after reading Peter Jone’s experience.

I’ve got one and think it’s superb. I use it mainly for solo wildcamping. Space is very good for one person, two can fit but I wouldn’t want to use it for a week say with two people.

Materials are thin, thats why it is a superlite, but very strong and no problems. The inber tent hooks makes it much easier to pitch than a sleeve, I had a sleeve on my ultra quasar but prefer the hooks.

I did seam seal mine with silnet (£10) which took a few hours to do and have not had any problems with leaks.

Also if it rains, you can pack the flysheer seperate to the inner, no faffing about unclipping the inner from the outer. Also it takes a few minutes to erect, so no issues there as well as the inner is also water repellant, enough to keep it dry for those few minutes.

For two people for a week or so I’d recommend a superlite or ultra quasar as tbey have a bit more room and 2 porches.

I have a standard Voyager. Not used a huge amount but it’s light and packs down to not a lot. You can fit 2 people with kit but it’s a little tight. Quasar with 2 porches def better for space but heavier I think. I thought I’d read that the Superlight is not sealed as it’s designed for high altitude mountaineering trips – has to cope with snow but not rain as too high up…

USER REVIEWS

The whole Terra Nova family of tents are excellent. I have had a Voyager for 5 years and never a single fault. I know 2 others with the same tent and who have had no problems. The student club to which I belong has had a series of the Quasars and 2 Hyperspace tents over the years and all have given sterling service - including one that was abandoned in the Himalayas, flattened by a storm and subsequently cut out of a snowdrift with ice axes.

Customer Service

Poles break occasionally (usually due to a drunk falling on the tent) and a few have been ripped, but these are the exceptions and Terra Nova have always been very understanding about replacing poles. If looked after, these tents are life-long companions.

Similar Products Used:

TNF - too small. Mountain Hardware - don't like the untaped fly (Britain is rather wet ya know). Vango - OK, fairly cheap. Vaude Hogan - Excellent small tent on par with the Terra-Nova Voyager.

I've had the heavier ENDURANCE quasar for 2 years now and this tent lives up to its considerable reputation...whether wild camping in mountain gales, staying on deserted islands or car camping for days in continuous scottish rain and midges...this tent is just so confidence inspiring and supremely comfortable...(one tiny design glitch they could fix would be to fold a channel into the vent at the door so when you open the doors in the morning rain drops don't drip directly on your head, you stove or dry boots !

Another member of the Quasar fan club. I've camped for 30 years, many times in the most awful conditions, and for all round performance it wins hands down. Goes up and comes down with no problems, roomy, solid. Brilliant.

#1 for after sales.

TNF, Marmot,Vango. All good but not as good.

This tent is light, easy to put up and take down, but far more importantly is easy to live in. The tent is light inside and can easily accomadate two in comfort. It's hard to praise this tent enough. If you want a two person go anywherelast a lifetime tent, then this is it.

Brilliant friendly support.

I don't have the ultra quaser but a slightly heavier version of it the quasar. The only difference being that it has a heavier fly which is stronger but weighs more. Everything else about the tents are the same. I think that Terra Nova aren't that well known in the USA, but I would say honestly they do make the best tents in the world. The reason that this tent is so good is because of the attention to detail. The most advanced materials are used and it is guarateed waterproof. It pitches in a flash and the tension in fly and inner can be altered easily, when conditions change. In the summer if the weather is good, I will leave the fly off. This tent comes into its own in the winter. I have only used it when winter backpacking in Scotland, but have found it to be very reliable and sturdy when exposed in heavy rain and strong wind. Slightly pricey but a better all round buy that a North Face or Mountain Hardwear I'd say. Its worth the exrta money. Chris Bonnington (some mountaineer) pitched this tent up amountain in the Himalayas on the way to a summit attempt, but was forced to cancel because of bad weather. He had too leave all his kit in his Terra Nova Quasar and go back down. A few weeks later when going back up for another attampt the Quasar was still stood as firm as ever, with all his kit dry and safe. This shows how rock solid this thing is and more that enough for any challenge you have in mind. The tent you buy in the shops is exactly the same as the ones used for expedition use apart from a Terra Nova Badge stitched on the side.

Since I live in Derbyshire where thay are handmade I have found it very easy to contact them. I think that Terra Novas customer service is supposed to be one of the best however

This is a roomy 2 man 4 season mountain tent. The design is a geodesic dome and features two porches & two exits. It takes seconds to put up and down and an idiot could do it without any instruction. These are amoung the best tents in the world.

I ripped one of the guy points and they had it back to me repaired by return of post. Lifetime guarantess and they stand by this. My friend used his in Alaska and while smoking a cigar burnt a hole in the floor, when he sent it in to be repaired TN replaced the entire ground sheet no charge.

North Face and Vango. The customer service for North face is not so good in England but only becase it is a small workshop and a little slow getting things back to you.

Excellent mountain tent favoured by many of the world's best mountaineers. Roomy, strong and quick to put up. The 'Ultra' is considerably lighter than the original. By far the most reliable tent on the market if you need something that will take it all.

Excellent customer service.

I'VE HAD A SUPER QUASAR FOR 2 YEARS NOW AND I USE IT AS A SMALL BASE CAMP UP HIGH IN SCOTLAND. THIS TENT WILL TAKE ANYTHING YOU THROW AT IT AND THAT AGAIN.I HAVE FRIENDS WHO HAVE TNF MOUNTAIN 25's AND OTHERS BUT WHEN WE ARE GOING SOMEWHERE REMOTE IN WINTER IT'S ALWAYS THE QUASAR WE TAKE.IT IS VERY HEAVY BUT IF YOU SPLIT THE WEIGHT WITH WHOEVER ELSE IS GOING TO USE IT THIS IS A SERIOUS OPTOIN THIS TENT NOT FOR THE CAR CAMPER OR FOR SOLO BACKPACKING AS IT IS TOO HEAVY IT'S A MOUNTAINEERING TENT FOR MOUTAINEERING

I LOST THE MANUAL FOR IT WHEN MOVING HOUSE SO I PHONED TERRA NOVA UP AND A NEW MANUAL ARRIVED THE FOLLOWING DAY

VANGO FORCE TEN MK4 TNF MOUNTAIN 25

I have a Terra Nova Super Quasar and it is the best tent I reackon! I have had it in gales and the thing doesn't even move in the wind. It is worth carrying the extra weight! A perfect tent for two with a load of gear or expecting company.

- Poids mini : 4.95 kg

- Poids empaqueté : 5.3 kg

- Couleur : double toit vert, tente intérieure jaune

- nombre de personnes : 2 à 3

Fans of all things lightweight will also be pleased to hear that despite being longer and with a taller porch, the Superlite Voyager is now over 300g lighter than previous models and is one third lighter than the classic Voyager.

The semi-geodesic design has proved itself time and again, and the new Superlite Voyager carries on that tradition for anybody travelling in all but the harshest conditions.

Strong and with inproved watershed due to construction design this tent is well deserving of it's Best In Test Awards from both Trail & Mountain and The Great Outdoors Magazine.

Note: Due to the super light nature of the material used in the tents construction Terra Nova are unable to factory seal the seams in a conventional method. However they are positioned and sewn in a way that minimises water penetration and it's possible to add further protection yourself, with seam sealer, to fully waterproof the tent.

  2. Terra Nova Voyager Reviews

Pros. Excellent balance of size, weight, strength, and weatherproofing. Very stable in strong wind, a proper 3-4 season tent. Self supporting so easy to turn into the wind. Totally waterproof. Cons. Somewhat cramped for two (but wonderful solo tent) Relatively small porch. Lack of vents in fly (but inner well ventilated)

I'm considering the Terra Nova Voyager which seems to tick all the boxes and has decent reviews. It's slightly on the heavy side with 2kg but a comparable 3 season tent I've been considering (MSR Hubba Hubba NX) really needs a footprint according to reviews, so with a footprint the weight difference is only 200g and the Voyager seems ...

  4. Voyager

Updated for 2023- PFC-freebreathable inner tent fabric. Suitable for 4 season/year-round backpacking. A great option for Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions in more exposed areas. The semi-geodesic tent design and inner first pitching make the Voyager more stable and quieter than a tunnel tent in windy conditions.

  5. UKC Forums

That said though if you are looking primarily for a 4 season winter tent then the Voyager may not be the best match. The Terra Nova Quaser would be better in terms of 'bomb proof' protection from the weather. But the strength comes at a cost of extra weight and tent selection has to be a balance. Brian.

  9. Terra Nova Quasar Two-Person Tent

With two entrances and porches, the Quasar provides more room for kit than the smaller, lighter Voyager Tent. It is also a freestanding tent which means it is easier to pitch in challenging locations where rocky, uneven ground is common. 19. UKH Forums

I am going to buy a mountain tent for all year round use in the UK and alpine trips, something along the lines of the terra nova quasar or the crux bomb, i.e. geodesic design, very sturdy and I would like opinions from people who have used either or both of these or could recommend an alternative.
