Guns-N-Roses-Australia-Dates-2021

Guns N’ Roses have announced they’ll play eight shows in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Announcing the news on social media, the band proclaimed, “Stadium rock is back!”, before going on to list the shows, which kick off in Australia’s Gold Coast on November 6 before climaxing in Perth on November 24. A pair of New Zealand shows in Wellington and Dunedin have been squeezed into the schedule. Full dates below.

Currently it’s uncertain when either country will fully reopen its borders, but tour promotor Paul Dainty is positive.

“We’re not doing this lightly,” he says. “There was a lot of consideration before we pulled the trigger. I’ve been doing this a long time. We wouldn’t be proceeding if we weren’t 100 per cent confident. There’s a lot of good news around with the vaccine and the like and we wanted to be optimistic and on the front foot.”

“It sends a message globally that New Zealand and Australia have done an incredible job in managing the pandemic.”

Dainty added, “It’s great for the fans, great for the stadiums. [Lots of] companies feed off this industry. I think there’ll be a lot of excitement. Stadium rock is back.”

Guns N’ Roses cancelled their European tour in May – the dates are now scheduled for June 2021 – and rescheduled their 2020 North American tour dates until Summer next year.

Tickets for the Australian and NZ dates go on sale on November 23, with a pre-sale for Nightrain members starting November 23.

Guns N’ Roses 2021 Australia & NZ tour includes the following dates:

Nov 06: Gold Coast Metricon Stadium, AU Nov 09: Adelaide Oval, AU Nov 11: Melbourne Cricket Ground, AU Nov 14: Sydney ANZ Stadium, AU Nov 16: Brisbane Suncorp Stadium, AU Nov 19, Wellington Sky Stadium, NZ Nov 21, Dunedin Forsyth Barr Stadium, NZ Nov 24, Perth Optus Stadium, AU.

Guns N’ Roses Set 2021 Stadium Tour of Australia and NZ

Stadium shows are returning to Australia and New Zealand, but not for another year.

By Lars Brandle

Duff McKagan, Axl Rose and Slash of Guns N' Roses

On Thursday (Nov. 19), Guns N’ Roses announced an eight-date tour of Australasia, kicking off Nov. 6 at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Presented by TEG Dainty, a division of the TEG Group, the trek then moves on to Adelaide Oval, Melbourne Cricket Ground, Sydney’s ANZ Stadium and Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

The production then heads east for two dates in New Zealand, at Sky Stadium in Wellington, and Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, then returns to Australia for a final, Nov. 24 concert at Perth’s Optus Stadium.

Bernard Fanning, Ocean Alley and Others Set for Australia's First Post-COVID Arena Shows

The stadium tour announcement is the first of its kind since the COVID-19 pandemic grounded flights and closed borders in March.

“Announcing an international tour of this magnitude as we come out of the most challenging year in the history of live entertainment is truly gratifying,” comments Paul Dainty, president & CEO of TEG Dainty.

“We’re all eager to return to business as usual,” he continues, “and who better to lead the charge into international stadium touring than the mighty Guns N’ Roses.”

Trending on Billboard

The classic line-up of Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan will make the long haul, as they did for the Not In This Lifetime stadium tour of these parts in 2017.

General tickets are available from Thursday, Nov. 26 .

The GNR jaunt is organized by the team behind the Greatest Southern Nights shows, scheduled to take place later this month and early December at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, and featuring an all-Australian lineup.

Australia's Live Industry Presents 'Devastating' Report of COVID Impact on Economy, Livelihoods

Speaking to Billboard ahead of the announcement, Geoff Jones, CEO of TEG, parent company of Ticketek, TEG Dainty and Qudos Bank Arena, says Australia, with its solid COVIDSafe protocols and low rates of confirmed infections, was in the box seat to restart the touring economy.

“Because of the way government and federal and state level have approached the pandemic, we should be in a position to lead the world,” Jones explains. The next step, is how to get international acts into the market. “We’ll certainly put a few international acts on sale in the next little while, for late next year,” he notes, with Guns N’ Roses the first major announcement. “We definitely need to be giving the indication that this industry is not lying down.”

The Chats And Cosmic Psychos Join Guns N’ Roses’ 2022 Australian Tour

By Alex Gallagher

After being forced to postpone their original 2021 dates due to the pandemic, Guns N’ Roses will finally make their way here in November for a stadium tour, marking their first Australian shows since 2017’s Not in This Lifetime world tour.

A few months out from the tour, organisers have revealed who’ll be joining GN’R on the road. It’s a pub-punk double bill that brings together one of the genre’s newest exports and one of its most longstanding titans, with both The Chats and Cosmic Psychos announced as special guests for the shows.

The Chats and Cosmic Psychos to Join Guns N’ Roses on Their Australian Tour Dates

When The Chats play stadiums across the country as part of Gunners’ tour, they’ll be fresh from releasing their second album,  Get Fucked,  and taking it on the road for their own national tour. They’ve shared two singles from the album thus far – ‘Struck By Lightning’ in March and ‘6L GTR’  in May – with the follow-up to 2020’s  High Risk Behaviour set to arrive on Friday, 19th August via The Chats’ own Bargain Bin Records.

Australian rock veterans Cosmic Psychos, meanwhile, released 11th studio album  Mountain of Piss last year, after previewing it with its title track and ‘Sin Bin’. It’s the fifth album to feature the band’s current lineup, which consists of frontman Ross Knight, guitarist John McKeering and drummer Dean Muller.

Guns N’ Roses Are Bringing Stadium Rock Back to Australia

Guns n’ roses are returning to australia this november for their first local tour in five years, ensuring stadium rock in back on the menu., brittany jenke, brittany jenke's most recent stories.

Image of Guns N' Roses

It’s been a long time coming, but just six months out from one of the year’s biggest concert tours, it’s clear that Guns N’ Roses are well and truly bringing stadium rock back to Australia.

Set to kick off in the middle of November, Guns N’ Roses’ forthcoming tour of the country has been in the works for some time. Having last visited the country as part of their ‘Not in This Lifetime…’ tour back in 2017 (which is itself the third highest-grossing concert tour of all time), it’s been a while since the iconic rockers have last showed Aussie fans what it is that makes them so great.

Selling over  350,000 tickets  during their last local tour, guitarist Slash promised fans that Guns N’ Roses would  return to Australia  once again, though no details were specified at the time. Since the tour, the band have been rumoured to be recording a  new album , with  Slash confirming  that new material was being written during a 2019 interview.

Now, the group are on track to ensure that their long-awaited return is a welcome one, with their forthcoming tour set to ensure that not only is stadium rock back on Aussie shores but that it’s here to stay.

Kicking off with a show at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Friday November 18th, the upcoming tour will see the group visit Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast, Sydney’s Accor Stadium Australia, and Adelaide Oval, before concluding the Australian tour at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The group will also travel across the Tasman to New Zealand landing at Sky Stadium in Wellington on December 8 and then Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday December 10.

Easily set to be one of the biggest musical events on the Australian calendar this year, the forthcoming tour also takes place just a few months before the 30th anniversary of one of the most iconic concerts in local history, Guns N’ Roses’ 1993 performance at Melbourne’s Calder Park.

Equally described as being both “notorious” and “the wildest rock gig Australia has seen” , the performance took place at the height of Guns N’ Roses’ fame as one of the biggest bands in the world. Only their second visit to the country, the show found itself becoming somewhat due to reasons beyond the band’s control. Wild weather, overbearing security, high prices, and poor infrastructure meant that the 75,000 fans in attendance at the Victorian speedway were bound to remember those gigs, but not necessarily for the best reasons.

However, close to three decades on, it’s remembered as one of the most famous moments in Australian concert history, with almost everyone in attendance that day happily stating that despite the poor organisation on the day, the band’s blistering performance meant that they wouldn’t trade it for the world .

30 years on though, organisation of gigs is far better, and it’s been quite a while since Guns N’ Roses’ shows have been remembered for little more than the stellar live performance that they put on. Of course, if the group’s 2017 trek to Australia is anything to go by, their forthcoming visit is set to see one of the group’s most enduring and iconic bands still performing at the peak of their powers.

Sure, it might be a few years since they last released an album, but if you need any proof that Guns N’ Roses are still the masters of stadium rock that they always have been, one need only head along to their Aussie tour this November.

Kurt Cobain is still shaping culture – 30 years after the Nirvana frontman’s death

Kurt Cobain in his now-iconic white sunglasses.

Thirty years from his death on April 5 1994, the impact of Kurt Cobain and his band, Nirvana, and their values, still resonates in today’s culture and music.

Nirvana were everywhere at the start of the 1990s, much like Taylor Swift’s omnipresence today. But unlike Swift, who has embraced and mastered the business side of her fame, Cobain was very much the anti-superstar of his time.

While Nirvana were certainly at the very top of the industry, headlining sold-out festivals , Cobain clearly felt uncomfortable being in the corporate music business. He expressed this discomfort in many ways, from merchandise emblazoned with the words “corporate rock whores” to his rows with MTV and journalists . No Swift-style media savvy slickness here.

Since 2010, the person responsible for Cobain’s name and image rights has been his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. Nirvana LLC, meanwhile, is managed by a team including original band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

These rights are expertly managed and controlled in a way that benefits from hindsight, showing an understanding of what Nirvana stood for which would scarce have been possible when the band was active, or Cobain still alive.

Cobain and the press

I’ve often said that Nirvana were the last band to reach the very top on their own terms. It didn’t hurt that they embodied the rags-to-riches type stories the press love so much. Cobain had an unhappy childhood and his art was a solace while he worked shifts as a janitor , relying on his girlfriend to fund his band.

Cobain’s relationship with fellow musician Courtney Love also attracted a lot of snide celebrity journalism attention, as did his struggles with his mental health and addiction. Looking back at some of the supposedly supportive headlines of the time, it is clear how the press perpetuated myths and heaped pressure onto an already vulnerable Cobain. I wonder whether headlines today would be quite so leading, or unthinking.

Today it’s not at all uncommon for artists to cancel or postpone shows and tours in order to protect their own mental health. Fans no longer tend to see this admission as weakness – in many ways it strengthens their devotion to the act.

This can be seen in the reactions to artists like Lewis Capaldi and Sam Fender , who have both postponed live shows to protect their mental wellbeing. In this respect, Cobain’s death by suicide paved the way for the press and fans alike to discuss the mental health of musicians in a more serious way.

Cobain’s cultural legacy

It is important to note that his final couple of years saw Cobain battle addiction and depression. Working with him would clearly have been a lot of fun, and yet very difficult. For the five to six years that Nirvana shined, they shined very brightly. And it has to be said, they rocked. Their music was simple, no frills, rock and roll.

That the band didn’t tour with Guns N’ Roses in 1992 may be a blessing for purists. Nirvana’s music was an authentic antidote to the hair metal which had dominated rock music in the few years prior. Cobain took time off with illness while they were supposed to be on that tour. In reality, Courtney Love states in the 2015 documentary Cobain: Montage of Heck, he just wanted to “stay and home and shoot up”. Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett claims that Cobain “just didn’t like what Guns N’ Roses stood for”.

Three members of Nirvana sat on a roof.

The band’s influence on fashion can also still be felt. Particularly in the proliferation of blokes wearing dresses in heavy rock bands like Idles , as Cobain often did on stage .

The iconic “Flower Sniffin’, Kitty Pettin’, Baby Kissin’, Corporate Rock Whores” band T-shirt, now sells for over £2,000. But in recent years, Nirvana LLC have granted rights to print new merchandise to several affordable brands, in keeping with Cobain’s anti-elitist values. In 2019, they filed a lawsuit against high fashion designer Marc Jacobs, when the brand released a t-shirt with a twist on the iconic X-eyed Nirvana smiley face.

Brand Nirvana today is clear on its values. It is hard not to believe that Cobain would have something to say about today’s identity politics (Cobain once declared he was “gay in spirit and … probably could be bisexual” and called himself a feminist ). A man for our times, in his times, so to speak.

As an expert in the music industry (particularly the indie side), it is clear to me that Cobain would remain a marketer’s dream in 2024. Thankfully, the custodians of the Cobain brand continue to advance and protect his thoughts and ideas long after his tragic death at just 27.
