Best Things to Do in December in Salt Lake City

Jennifer Boren

LAST UPDATED BY Jennifer Boren November 25, 2014

It's so nice to live in or visit a larger city at the holidays and have so many options for Christmas activities.   Salt Lake City, Utah provides just that, in a picture perfect setting, with the beautiful snow-capped Wasatch Mountain range on the east providing a beautiful backdrop.  The downtown is energized with seasonal spirit, wtih many people choosing to stroll around the beautifully decorated Temple Square , with its numerous lights and beautiful nativity scenes.  Horse-drawn carriages carrying blanketed riders pass shop-keepers' themed windows.

Music is such a large part of the season and the Utah Symphony provides that in two different ways.  First, accompanying the professional ballet company Ballet West in their multiple showings of The Nutcracker at the Capitol Theatre, and secondly, in their own concert at Abravenel Hall, in the "Messiah" Sing-In.  Fulfill your inner dancer and singer by attending these two very inspiring shows.

Finish your holiday shopping while browsing the beautiful City Creek Center downtown or step back in time and to Salt Lake City's beginnings by meandering the old fashioned village buildings at This is the Place Heritage Park and purchase handmade items or make your own while hearing carolers.  Father Christmas is on hand too.

Stay warm indoors at the annual Festival of Trees event at the South Towne Exp or bundle up to see Santa rapel from the tram at Snowbird Resort and see the Torchlight Parade come down the mountain - an awesome sight!

Enjoy your holidays in Salt Lake City!

Festival of Trees at South Towne Expo Center

What a wonderful way to help these children suffering from severe illnesses. Besides seeing all the different fun trees, be sure to see the Angel trees, which offer stories of current patients and those who lost their battle. Also don't miss the change to purchase beautiful Christmas wreaths in the Aisle of Wreaths. Besides seeing all the trees, shop the Christmas boutiques and enjoy a variety of entertainment, including moving dance performances. Kids will love the visit from Santa, face painting, the gingerbread village and the bubble machine. Tickets are $5 at the door for adults and $3 for kids. Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance at most branches of Zions bank. For a special night out, attend the Opening Night with a $30 contribution to Primary Children's Hospital Foundation. This is a dressy event complete with silent auction.

From world-class skiing to spring wildflowers, these are the best times to visit Salt Lake City

Aug 27, 2021 • 7 min read

Salt Lake City offers visitors the chance to explore the outdoors, visit museums, learn about the rich spiritual history of the city, or enjoy world-class downhill skiing. There are different activities to enjoy depending on the season you visit.

Skiers and snowboarders flock to the surrounding ski resorts in the winter. Fall is a great time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds and get lower rates. Hikers and mountain bikers enjoy hitting the trails in spring to see the wildflowers bloom. The summer can be hot, so visiting the variety of museums the city has to offer is a worthwhile way to spend time.

Here’s our guide to visiting Salt Lake City throughout the year.

Skiing near Salt Lake City

High Season: December - March

Best time for skiing

There’s a reason Salt Lake City is nicknamed “Ski City.” If you love to hit the slopes, winter is a paradise for skiers and snowboarders to visit the many world-class ski resorts in the area. There are nine resorts less than an hour away from the city, Alta (for skiers only) and Snowbird are the closest, while Park City and Deer Valley are known for being family-friendly.

Whether you want to do tricks in a terrain park, maneuver down some chutes, or just hit the bunny trail, December through March are great months to visit. Utah is known for its light, dry snow, which is why it is a popular place for winter sports. Many of the resorts also rent out snowshoes for trekking through the trees and offer cross-country skiing, which is a great way to explore the serene winter wilderness.

Keep in mind that since winter is the high season in the Salt Lake City area, you might have to deal with crowds and higher prices for accommodations, transportation, lift tickets and equipment rentals.

Shoulder Season: April - June

Best time for outdoor activities

Springtime in Salt Lake City offers a variety of outdoor experiences like hiking, mountain biking, fishing and visiting the many gardens and parks. Within a few miles of the city, the Wasatch Range has dozens of hiking trails that range from easy to difficult. For those who prefer to use two wheels, there are plenty of mountain biking trails , from fire roads to novice riders to single track for those who are more daring and experienced.

From April through June, it’s typically not too hot or too cold to get around the city by foot, bike or bus to take advantage of the many monuments and museums, many of which are  free . It’s also a great time to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a pleasant afternoon in the beautiful gardens, such as the 21-acre Red Butte Garden  at the University of Utah, the 50-acre Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point with the largest manmade waterfall in the Western Hemisphere, or the Tracy Aviary and Botanical Garden where guests can view and feed birds and walk through a rainforest.

Be aware that rain is more likely during this time of year, so pack an umbrella.

Salt Lake Temple at Temple Square

Low Season: September - October

Best time for budget travel

For budget travelers wanting to visit the Salt Lake City area, fall is the least crowded and least expensive time to go. During September and October, kids have returned to school and the snow hasn’t fallen yet so the city and roadways aren’t overrun with family vacationers or skiers and snowboarders. It’s also a good time to visit because the beautiful fall foliage adds its colors to the landscape. A hike in the nearby Wasatch Mountains, a trip to the great Salt Lake or some ATV off-roading are all enjoyable activities this time of year.

As the temperatures start to drop, it’s also a nice time to take advantage of the many museums and monuments scattered throughout the city. Learn about the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints in Temple Square , examine life sciences exhibits at the Natural History Museum of Utah , explore your family tree at the Family History Library or see the stars at the Clark Planetarium . There’s plenty to do and see in the city and beyond.

Here’s our month-by-month breakdown of what to expect and what to do in Salt Lake City.

The city of Stansbury, just a short drive west of downtown Salt Lake City, offers visitors the unique opportunity to take the polar plunge. Don’t worry – you can just watch if you’re too cold. Salt Lake City offers numerous locations to get your kicks on an ice rink, both indoor and outdoor.

Utah Olympic Oval : indoor ice skating facility located 14 miles southwest of downtown Salt Lake City. Used during the 2002 Winter Olympics, the Utah Olympic Oval is a great spot to test your skills in a safe, supportive environment. And while you’re there, check out the local curling clubs!

Gallivan Center : for less than $10/person, you can experience Salt Lake City’s premier downtown ice skating rink. Just think how magical it would be – ice skating in the heart of Salt Lake City, twinkling lights all around, the laughter of nearby children…and then it starts to snow. This IS real life!

Even though the actual ride lasts less than 60 seconds, the thrill will stay with you forever!

Salt Lake City in the Winter: Outdoor Activities

Soak in thermal hot springs.

The Homestead Crater in Midway, Utah is one of the most unique thermal hot springs in the country. Not only is it the only warm scuba diving destination in the continental US, but is completely shielded from outside forces, similar to a cenote.

is salt lake city good to visit in december

All I knew about Salt Lake City was that it held the Winter Olympics once and it’s somewhere in the United States. That is all. After reading this, I would love to check out this city, I think in the winter more as I love the cold and snow and love capturing winter shots with the camera. I never done an Ice Castle before and would love to see that. One day I get to this part of the USA.

So many fun winter activities. I would to experience some of these when visiting Salt Lake City. I’ve never visited before but would like to now after reading this post. I visited the Ice Castles in New Hampshire, such a fun time!

We just got back from our fall trip to Utah. We enjoyed day tripping from Salt Lake City in the fall. Good to see a winter view. While I may go ice skating. I am not taking that polar plunge! Even if I booked myself some time at the hot springs at Homestead Centre. The ice castles would certainly spark my imagination. Colourful lights for the holiday season would be fun. Some good reasons to plan a return visit for the winter.

I’m not big into outdoor winter sports, so it’s good to know there are a lot of holiday and indoor things to do in Salt Lake City in winter. The Grand America Holiday Window Stroll and the Temple Square Lights both sound really festive. It’s always fun to see how different cities decorate for the holidays.

Wow! That is a huge list of things to do in this region. We drove through salt lake city towards Arizona and unfortunately only spent a night in the city. From your list, I would be interested in the Ice Castles, they look magical. Also dipping into the freezing lake must be a way to wake up nerve endings and be rejuvenated. After that I would wish to dip into the thermal waters in the crater. That should make a nice ending to a relaxing winter day.

Salt Lake City looks just like a winter wonderland. Complete with ice castles and all. The polar plunge sounds so thrilling. Would love to try it out someday. Meanwhile I am all for the snow tubing and the thermal hot springs.

Wow! That’s a super cool list of things to do! I’m hoping to do a bit more things this winter than my last winters, now that my gal is already 2 years old! Snow tubing sounds cool, the best part is ofcourse that you need not carry it all the way to the top! Polar plunge actually sounds a bit scary! You need to be really brave to do it! I wouldn’t! Good to know that there are emergency rescue teams in place. Ice castles with secret passageways? Wow! I want to experience that for sure.

Even though the bobsledding adventure is short-lived, that sounds like an absolute blast and something so unique to Utah! But I think the Hot Springs along with all the options there would be a ton of entertainment alone! And I love anywhere I can find a Christmas market. I never knew Utah had so much to offer!

When I think about Salt Lake city, summer images conjure up in my mind. But it seems like such a great winter wonderland. I had no idea Utah is home to the greatest snow on earth. Although, I am a lousy skiier, I would love to try here. Ice castles are so dreamy.

The Best Time to Visit Salt Lake City

is salt lake city good to visit in december

The best times to visit Salt Lake City are winter, spring and fall, depending on which outdoorsy activities you have in mind. The winter months bring Utah’s famous snow while visiting during spring and fall makes hiking through nearby canyons more comfortable than in the warm summer months.

But just about any time of year can have its appeal in this beautiful mountain city.

Weather in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City has a wide variety of weather, depending on the time of year. Summer gets hot with temperatures in the 90s Fahrenheit and even up to the low 100s F. Winter is the opposite with regular snow and average lows below freezing in December, January, and February. If you’re coming to ski, come in the colder months. If you’re coming to hike, spring, summer, and fall are all fine, but spring and fall are best if you’re not a fan of heat.

Salt Lake City is located at high altitude around 4,300 feet above sea level. Chances are you won’t notice it too much, but don’t underestimate the importance of sunscreen year-round and be prepared to feel a little winded during activities.

In winter, Salt Lake City often experiences something called inversion. Inversion is when a dense cold layer of air gets trapped under a layer of warm air, and what essentially happens is all the car exhaust and air pollution hangs out on top of the city. If you’re heading out to the mountains, this shouldn’t affect you, but if you’re staying in town and especially if you have asthma, heart, or lung issues, be prepared for a reduction in air quality.

Prices and Crowds

Salt Lake City remains pretty stable most of the year as far as hotel and lodging costs go. You may see some spikes if there is an event in town, but you can always find a reasonably priced hotel to stay at, especially if you’re willing to stay outside of the downtown core. Major happenings include the Sundance Film Festival in late January and early February. It's centered in nearby Park City, but some events take place in Salt Lake City as well. Ski season is also a big to-do in the area, but the crowds and cost increases generally happen at the ski resorts, not in town. The biannual Conference held by the LDS church and focused on Temple Square is also a consideration as downtown hotels will likely be booked.

Popular Festivals and Events

Salt Lake City has a number of major festivals and events throughout the year, but most don’t impact the city overall or cause major city-wide traffic jams. However, General Conference—a twice-yearly conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints—brings thousands of visitors to Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City for a weekend in April and October each year. You may want to skip staying downtown those weekends if you don’t plan to go to the Conference, as the city will be more crowded and hotels will be more expensive. Other major festivals include the Days of 47 Parade on July 24, (Pioneer Day, a holiday in Utah) that shuts down part of State State Street downtown.

Winter in Salt Lake City is paradise if you love snow sports. Temperatures frequently stay in the freezing range, and snow is a usual occurrence. With it, the area’s ski resorts open to eager skiers. With an international airport in downtown Salt Lake City, you can land and be out on the slopes within an hour or two. Nearby ski resorts include Alta and Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood Canyon, and luxurious Deer Valley in Park City. Beyond skiing, you’ll also find plenty of snowshoeing trails, tubing areas or even just sledding at places like Sugar House Park right in town.

Events to check out:

  • Christmas lights displays dot the area, but be sure to see the light display at Temple Square in downtown SLC. Time your visit for a weeknight if you don’t want to deal with the crowds.
  • Sundance Film Festival is one of the area’s biggest happenings. It’s centered in Park City, which is about a half-hour away from Salt Lake City, but also has events in Salt Lake City and Ogden.

Spring is an amazing time in Salt Lake City. Snow is often still falling in the mountains so skiers can live it up, and yet all the green things are waking up in the valley below so enjoying some nature, parks, or even just shopping are all pleasant and enjoyable. Dress in layers as weather can be variable. If you’re a sports fan, the Salt Lake City Bees (a minor league baseball team) kick off their season in April. If you really want to get into the spring spirit, head to the Capitol to see the 433 Yoshino cherry blossom trees that line Capitol Hill. They usually blossom in late March or early April.

  • The Salt Lake City St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a large annual event that winds its way through the Gateway downtown. After the parade, a party called a Siamsa takes place at the Gallivan Center.
  • Living Traditions Festival takes place over three days and is a multicultural festival that celebrates SLC’s ethnic communities. Expect traditional music, dance, arts and crafts, and all kinds of delicious food.

Summer in Salt Lake City features plenty of hot days so pack your tank tops and sunscreen. While the peak of the day can be toasty, afternoons and evenings are ideal for picnics in the park, hikes in town or out in the canyons (the canyons are usually cooler even during the day), or enjoying one of the many summer festivals. Whatever you do and wherever you go, bring more water than you think you’ll need, especially if you’re out being active.

  • Utah Arts Festival is the state’s largest outdoor multi-disciplinary arts festival and about 70,000 people head to downtown SLC each summer to check out everything from visual arts to literary and urban arts to arts for kids.
  • July 4th is celebrated in SLC as it is in most places—with fireworks and fun. Rather than one major display, you’ll find many fireworks displays and other events throughout town.
  • Pioneer Day is a holiday in Utah, celebrating the arrival of Brigham Young and Mormon pioneers to the area on July 24, 1847. The holiday features fireworks, concerts and other events, but a highlight is the Days of 47 Parade (the largest parade in the state) in downtown.
  • Utah Pride is one of the larger Pride festivals and features the state’s second-largest parade, as well as food, entertainment, vendors, and more.

Fall is a lovely time to visit Salt Lake City. Temperatures cool down a bit but aren’t yet cold. Football games at the University of Utah are a highlight for sports fans, and scenic drives in the canyons near town (Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, Millcreek, and Emigration Canyon) are always a good idea as the fall foliage is a treat. Even spots right in town like Liberty Park are great for leaf-peeping.

  • The Utah State Fair is the quintessential state fair experience filled with fried food, fun, rides, games and entertainment. It’s perfect for kicking off fall.
  • Greek Fest celebrates Greek culture with food, folk dances and the opportunity to learn about the perhaps surprisingly large Greek community in the area.
  • FanX is a pop culture expo that was formerly known as Salt Lake Comic Con. Get your cosplay ready to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to visit Salt Lake City depends on what you're looking for. If you want pleasant weather for hiking or walking around, visit in spring or fall. If you're going for skiing, then winter or early spring is the best time to visit.

Outside of some annual events like the Sundance Film Festival in late January, crowds don't fluctuate much in Salt Lake City. The ski season is a popular time to visit, but the crowds are concentrated in the resort towns like Park City.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Utah?

One of the best times to visit Utah is December. In the north you can enjoy winter activities like snow skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

In the south you can still enjoy activities like hiking and biking because “most of the time”, the weather isn’t snowy and daytime temperatures aren’t too cold.

The one exception is Bryce Canyon in December . Due to it’s elevation, the weather and temperatures are more aligned to what you’d experience in the northern part of the state. Expect snow, cold temperatures, and winter activities.

Yes, it does snow in the southern parts of Utah, but it doesn’t usually stay on the ground too long so you can enjoy all those fun outdoor activities without crowds or heat!

On the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake framed by the Wasatch Mountains, Utah’s high-altitude capital city boasts “the Greatest Snow on Earth.”

With winter highs that hover around freezing, Salt Lake City receives an average of 54 inches of snow per year. And during ski season, the mountains surrounding Salt Lake City receive nearly 1 foot of perfect powder every 5 days. Here are the best outdoor activities in Salt Lake City in winter.

Hit The Slopes

When you visit Salt Lake City during winter, you’ll definitely want to spend time outdoors in the snow! If you’re a skier, you’ll be delighted to learn that the mountains around Salt Lake City are home to several world-class ski resorts . Even more exciting is that you can land at Salt Lake City International Airport and on the slopes at one of four of those resorts within an hour of arrival.

Pro Tip: Sundial Lodge and Park City Mountain Resort are two of the best family-friendly ski resorts in the area. For ski runs off the beaten powder-packed path, check out Powder Mountain , one of the best uncrowded ski resorts in the US .

Glide On Cross-Country Skis

If your midlife knees are no longer in their downhill skiing prime, then perhaps you’ll enjoy cross-country skiing as a less strenuous alternative. Cross-country skiing is good for all skill levels, especially beginners . Simply strap on a pair of skis, and explore the winter wonderland that surrounds you!

Pro Tip: If you haven’t visited Salt Lake City, its street addresses, calculated from the Great Salt Lake Base and Meridian, can be confusing. Crack the code with these tips !

Take A Winter Hike

Another way for visitors of all skill levels to explore a snowy Salt Lake City is on a winter hike. Strap a pair of snowshoes onto your hiking boots, and the steel crampons will help you explore the path less traveled with all the confidence of a caribou.

Pro Tip: If you don’t own cross-country skis or snowshoes, it’s easy to rent them locally for a day, week, or the entire season. Both Sports Den and Canyon Sports have all the gear you need! If you plan to purchase a pair of snowshoes, read this first.

Slide In Style

Another snowy activity to consider in Salt Lake City in winter is snow tubing. Simply glide up the “magic carpet” with your inflatable tube, then let gravity do all of the work while you sit back and enjoy the ride. One of the best places for winter tubing in the Salt Lake City area is on the Toyota Tubing Hill at Soldier Hollow . At 1,200 feet, their sliding lanes are some of the longest in the Beehive State. Plus, Soldier Hollow has accommodations for tubers in wheelchairs and visually impaired guests.

Pro Tip: Enjoying the best snow on earth is likely to make you hungry! These incredible Salt Lake City restaurants are some of my favorites.

Riding a snowmobile during winter.

See The Sights Via Snowmobile

For an even bigger adrenaline rush, glide across the snowy mountains surrounding Salt Lake City on a snowmobile. The team at Lofty Peaks Adventures offers guided snowmobile tours in Heber City and Snowbird. Hop in the driver’s seat and command the craft, or hold on tight and enjoy the ride. (If you’re new to snowmobiling and can share a craft with a travel buddy, the passenger rate at Lofty Peaks is heavily discounted.) If you’re an experienced snowmobiler, you can also rent a rig for a few hours to explore the trailheads solo.

Twirl On The World’s Fastest Ice

Salt Lake City’s Olympic Oval boasts the fastest ice in the world. Why? At 4,675 feet above sea level, the arena is the highest-altitude rink in the world. At higher altitudes, the ice is harder and denser. Plus, the reduced air resistance makes the speed skating events much faster. That’s why Salt Lake City has been the site of the majority of the speed skating world records that stand today.

Whether you want to race around the rink or twirl under the stars, one of the best outdoor ice rinks in Salt Lake City is Gallivan Center . Located in the heart of downtown, this large oval rink is just south of the Utah State Capitol Building.

Fun Fact: While it’s an indoor rink, the ice at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center was the official practice site for American Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Celebrate The 2002 Winter Olympics

Speaking of the Olympics, Salt Lake City is well known for hosting the XIX Olympic Winter Games . Gathering 2,400 athletes from around the world in February 2002, Salt Lake City was the last American city to host a winter Olympics. Relive the event with a visit to the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center, where you can often watch bobsled, skeleton, and other winter sporting events. If you’re not content to just sit and watch, then take a ride with a professional bobsled pilot via the Winter Bobsled Experience . And before you go, be sure to visit the Eccles Salt Lake 2002 Winter Games and Alf Engen Ski Museums on site.

Pro Tip: You can see the metal structure that held the Olympic flame during the 2002 Winter Olympics in the southwest corner of the Rice-Eccles Stadium. This football stadium at the University of Utah was the site of the opening and closing ceremonies for the XIX Olympic Winter Games in February 2002.

Fawn Over Frozen Fortresses

Greater Salt Lake City is one of four ice castle destinations in the United States. Channel your inner Elsa and embrace the cold by bundling up and exploring the LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, and carved ice tunnels fashioned from hundreds of thousands of icicles created by professional ice artists.

Admire The Holiday Lights

While there are more than 100 Mormon temples around the world, the 210-foot-tall, cream-colored granite church in downtown Salt Lake City is the largest. Just as impressive as its size is its draw. With three- to five-million visitors annually, Temple Square attracts more sightseers than all five of Utah’s national parks combined.

During the warm months, Temple Square is a lush and quiet refuge from the cement sidewalk and busy city beyond the gates. Tall trees provide shade, and the grounds are filled with colorful flowers from March through November. But one of the best times to visit Temple Square is during winter. From the day after Thanksgiving until the new year begins, the 35-acre Temple Square grounds are filled with millions of festive lights, illuminated paper lanterns, and Nativity scenes.

You can also enjoy festive holiday lights at ZooLights! at Utah’s Hogle Zoo . This secular holiday attraction features twinkle-light tunnels, illuminated displays, and a chance for wee ones to meet Santa.

Take The Plunge

Speaking of the North Pole, you can channel your inner ursine and jump into the frigid water at Stansbury Park during the Polar Bear Plunge. Or spend more time outdoors this winter by first running a 5k and then jumping into the Utah State Lake with the Frigid 5k and Penguin Plunge .

Go Scuba Diving

If you prefer water that’s far from freezing over, you’ll love this next tip. The Homestead Crater in Midway is a geothermal spring hidden within a 55-foot-tall, beehive-shaped limestone rock. With constant temperatures between 90 and 96 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s the only warm scuba diving destination in the continental U.S., making it a unique outdoor winter activity in Salt Lake City.

A bison on Antelope Island near Salt Lake City, Utah.

Hunt Bison (With A Long Camera Lens) On Antelope Island

On the southeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island is the largest of the lake’s ten islands. With several scenic trails and one of the country’s oldest bison herds, Antelope Island is one of my favorite places to spend a beautiful day outdoors in Salt Lake City. In addition to being less crowded and often blanketed with snow, another benefit of visiting Antelope Island during winter is that the mosquitos, biting gnats, and non-biting brine flies aren’t around.

Bonus Activities In Salt Lake City In Winter

While they are not outdoor activities, basketball and hockey fans will want to consider these two bonus recommendations. NBA fans can attend a Utah Jazz basketball game at the Vivint Smart Home Arena, the Salt Lake Ice Center during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

If you’re a hockey fan, take in a Utah Grizzlies game at the Maverick Center . As you cheer for this minor-league affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, you’re doing so in the venue where Olympic athletes competed for gold during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Another big draw to Salt Lake City in the winter is the Sundance Film Festival at the end of January. The largest independent film festival in the country, the event attracts celebrities while showcasing some of the best cinematic works across all genres from around the world.

From sliding like a kid down the slopes in a tube to exploring the path less traveled on snowshoes, cross-country skis, or a snowmobile, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities to enjoy in Salt Lake City in winter.

Temple Square's multi-block, 35-acre plaza is home to nearly 20 attractions related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's anchored by the towering Salt Lake Temple  – where, among other things, weekly meetings of the church's governing bodies are held – and other fascinating buildings like the expansive Tabernacle and the Gothic Revival-style Assembly Hall, which offer insight into the history and development of the church. Once you've toured the sites, stroll through the square's scenic gardens and past the gurgling fountains.

Recent travelers recommend taking a free, guided tour of the square and also mention that you don't have to be particularly religious to find it of interest. Travelers note that while the area is nice to walk around, the temple is currently undergoing renovation. The building and its surroundings are closed to the public and much of the area is obscured with fences and scaffolding.

Great Salt Lake Great Salt Lake

Clocking in at roughly 35 miles wide and 75 miles long, the Great Salt Lake is the largest natural saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. The lake's name comes from the nature of the water: The evaporation process (the only exit available for the lake's water) leaves behind salty mineral deposits. Salt Lake City's visitors and residents enjoy the area's many hiking trails, ample picnic spots, and swimming, boating and fishing opportunities.

Great Salt Lake Park is one access point that's close to the city: just 20 miles west. Here, travelers will find a marina, a small beach trail and facilities like showers, concessions and restrooms. Another popular access point is Antelope Island, a state park located northwest of the city. While you'll be able to access the same scenery as Great Salt Lake Park, Antelope Island also features plenty of wildlife to spot (including bison and antelope). Plus, you'll find the Fielding Garr Ranch House, an 1800s house on its original foundation. You can only reach the island by driving around the lake's southeast shore, following Interstate 15 to exit 332. The drive is about 60 miles one-way.

best things to do in Utah in december

In December, Little Wild Horse Canyon becomes a serene wonderland, largely devoid of the crowds you’ll find in warmer months. The cooler weather provides an entirely different hiking experience, with frozen water features adding to the canyon’s otherworldly beauty.

While summer poses the risk of flooding, this monnth offers safer conditions for you to explore this Utah secret. Located near Goblin Valley—an awesome destination in its own right—this slot canyon is perfect for those wanting a quieter winter adventure.

If a Utah road trip is in the cards for you this winter, Little Wild Horse Canyon definitely deserves a spot on your itinerary!

2. Needles Overlook

best things to do in Utah in december

Imagine taking in sprawling vistas of Canyonlands National Park — but without the constant click of cameras around you. Needles Overlook is your spot. The lower visitor numbers in December mean you can enjoy one of Canyonlands’ most jaw-dropping views, and there’s a chance you’ll have it all to yourself.

The overlook is accessible by car, and the scene becomes even more ethereal with a light dusting of snow, making the red-rock formations pop against the white backdrop.

3. Dead Horse Point State Park

best things to do in Utah in december

For a Grand Canyon–like experience without the masses, head to Dead Horse Point State Park in December. The crisp winter air enhances the clarity of the sprawling canyons below, offering picture-perfect views that rival any summer visit. Drive straight up to the viewpoint and, if you’re up for it, explore the park’s hiking trails blanketed in a soft layer of snow. The solitude and scenic landscapes make this a must-visit this time of year.

4. Bryce Canyon National Park

best things to do in Utah in december

There’s no season quite like winter to enjoy Bryce Canyon National Park. The iconic hoodoos look even more surreal with a crown of snow, creating a mesmerizing contrast between the earthy reds and the pure whites.

While many consider this a destination for other seasons, December offers a range of snowy activities. From snowshoeing and snowmobiling to cross-country skiing, Bryce Canyon is a hot spot for cold-season fun. Plus, fewer visitors mean you can savor the beauty in relative solitude.

Bryce Canyon made our list of the best national parks to visit in the winter , so check that out if you’re keen on getting outdoors as much as possible this month!

5. Bentonite Hills

best things to do in Utah in december

Bentonite Hills, often compared to Martian landscapes, are even more intriguing in December. On your way to the famous Temple of the Sun and the Moon in Capitol Reef National Park, the snow-kissed, multicolored hills provide a dramatic backdrop for winter photography.

Road conditions can change during this month, so always check the latest updates before venturing out. But if you’re looking for a spectacle that’s out of this world, Bentonite Hills is the place to be this month.

6. Goblin Valley State Park

best things to do in Utah in december

December brings a quiet charm to Goblin Valley State Park. Here, the mushroom-shaped hoodoos take on a frosty appearance, sometimes resembling bizarre snowmen in a winter wonderland. The park has two yurts available to rent, making it a great location for a cold-weather getaway.

One of my favorite things about this spot is that it’s a relatively unknown hidden gem in Utah . Visiting this month means it’ll be even more tranquil than normal, and that’s saying a lot, considering it never gets too crowded here. This is the ultimate pick for solitude!

7. Bonneville Salt Flats

best things to do in Utah in december

In December, the Bonneville Salt Flats offer a different kind of wintry spectacle. While summer sees cars zooming down the salt crust, this season offers its own quiet allure. Racetrack Playa is usually the safest area to explore, especially considering the risk of getting stuck in wetter conditions. Although you won’t be setting any land speed records, walking on this snow-like salt bed provides a serene, almost otherworldly experience.

8. Natural Bridges National Monument

best things to do in Utah in december

I visited Natural Bridges National Monument in the wintertime and was amazed by its stunning natural architecture. The monument features three prominent bridges that you can hike to, either individually or in a loop. December’s icy conditions, especially on the trail to the shade-draped Sipapu Bridge, mean it’s a good idea to pack shoe spikes. The visitor center is a valuable resource for up-to-date trail conditions.

If you’re seeking a winter hike that offers both solitude and natural beauty, this is your spot. Plus, Kachina Bridge is often more accessible and leads you to a seasonal waterfall, a hidden gem.

9. Ice Castles in Midway

For a fairytale December outing in Utah, don’t miss the enchanting Ice Castles in Midway . These award-winning works are meticulously crafted by artists and are only open in the colder months. As you wander through the frosty labyrinth, you’ll encounter elaborate sculptures and playful playgrounds of ice, making it a great choice for families with little ones. After exploring a bit, warm up with a cup of complimentary hot chocolate, completing your festive experience.

10. Arches National Park

best things to do in Utah in december

There’s something particularly magical about Arches National Park in December. While amenities like guided tours might not be available, the park’s hiking trails remain open, offering an intimate experience you won’t get in busier months. Even more captivating is the stargazing; thanks to its high altitude and remote location, Arches is a globally recognized site for astronomy enthusiasts. Embrace the chilly nights and witness a breathtaking night sky.

11. Monument Valley Stargazing

If you can’t get enough of stargazing in Utah this December, don’t miss out on Monument Valley. This is one of the best places to see the twinkling night lights this time of year. I recommend taking a guided tour, as it gives you the benefit of having a guide with a telescope for maximum viewing opportunities. Take it from me: you’ll never look at the stars the same way again after this!

12. Mystic Hot Springs

best things to do in Utah in december

Though I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting Mystic Hot Springs in the winter months, I can imaging it’s just as beautiful as any other time of year. If you’re lucky enough to see snow on the ground during your December visit, the steam created will surely add to the overall magical vibe of this place. Check out my full guide to Mystic Hot Springs here .

13. Homestead Crater

You probably already know that I’m a dedicated hot springs enthusiast. If Mystic Hot Springs is too remote for you, Homestead is a stellar choice because it’s close to Salt Lake City. Imagine soaking in a geothermal hot spring concealed within a 55-foot limestone dome — an experience you can only get here.

This hidden gem offers a unique winter respite with constant water temperatures ranging from 90° to 96°F. Apart from the obvious allure of a warm soak in a frigid month, you can also partake in swimming, snorkeling, and even stand-up paddleboard yoga. It’s a subterranean escape that’s perfect for a December getaway in Utah.

So, ready to grab your gear and set out to experience the awe-inspiring landscapes, cosmic stargazing spots, and warm, underground retreats this December? Whether you’re an avid hiker, a nature photographer, or simply looking for some cozy winter escapades, this list of the best things to do in Utah in December has something for everyone.

The Best Things to do in Salt Lake City

Ready to discover the best things to do in Salt Lake City? Explore with this in-depth guide.

Utah’s capital has pretty stiff competition when thinking of the top places to visit in the state.

Compared to the natural and geological marvels dotted all over the state, Salt Lake City (or SLC as it’s known) can be overlooked – a real shame as it’s packed with brilliant places and activities for you to discover.

Still a major hub for the Mormon Church, Salt Lake City has rejuvenated itself in recent years to boast a thriving dining and nightlife scene along with lots of cool cultural attractions.

Let’s take a deep dive into the best things to do in SLC.

Tip: If you’re looking for the best place to stay during your vacation in Salt Lake City, look no further than the most famous hotel in the city, the Grand America Hotel .

Top 5 Things to Do in Salt Lake City, Utah

Visit temple square.

Temple Square

Ask any local what the best thing to do in Salt Lake City is, and they’ll recommend visiting Temple Square.

The square is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (The Mormons) whose headquarters, the Salt Lake Temple, dominates the square. Spanning a whopping 10 acres, it’s a must-see sight (book onto one of the free tours to do so).

Beyond the imposing and architecturally stunning main building, you can also visit other famous spots. Some of the most noteworthy include the Tabernacle, various religious history museums, and a few Latter-day Saints holy sites.

Tip: To tour Temple Square, book your tickets here .

Go Sightseeing at the Great Salt Lake

Great Salt Lake

How could any Salt Lake City things-to-do list begin without a sightseeing extravaganza at the Great Salt Lake? Although not technically within the city, visiting this massive 1,700-square-mile lake is the best thing to do near Salt Lake City.

Some of the top ways to get the best of what the lake offers include kayaking, paddle boarding, and pedal boating. Plan your visit for sunrise or sunset, as the lake takes on a stunning facade during these times.

Experiencing the Great Salt Lake, you can venture through Antelope Island State Park on its eastern side. Or alternatively from the western side through Great Salt Lake State Park.

Hike Through Ensign Peak Nature Park

Ensign Peak Nature Park

Nature lovers unite. You simply can’t visit Salt Lake City and skip a hike to Ensign Peak. At only half a mile, it’s a simple and easy trek, no matter how much of a hiker you are. To reach Ensign Peak, travel 1.3 miles along East Capitol Blvd until the turn-off into Ensign Vista Drive.

What can you expect once at the peak? Well, unparalleled views of the Great Salt Lake (especially beautiful as the sun sets) and clear sights over Salt Lake Valley. Oh, and of course, direct views towards the city capitol buildings.

Explore the Salt Lake City Public Library

Salt Lake City Public Library

Bonneville Salt Flats

Few natural landscapes come close to the world-famous Bonneville Salt Flats.

This unique and almost otherworldly area consists of a hard white salt crust stretching as far as the eye can see. In fact, the salt flats cover about 100 cubic yards (wow, right?).

Designated an Area of Critical Environmental Concern almost 40 years ago, it’s one of only a few salt pans in the world. You can reach the flats by taking exit 40 off Interstate 80 north towards the Speedway. Parking at Leppy Pass Road is complimentary.

Experience the Gallery Stroll

Probably one of the coolest things to experience on vacation to Salt Lake City is the Gallery Stroll. On the third Friday of every month, the local galleries in the city open their doors and extend their hours.

This allows you to browse their collections, enjoy some music and wine and dine your way through the galleries.

Roughly 40 galleries participate in this citywide event, with each providing visitors with a curated Gallery Guide Map. The best part? The entire event is one massive self-guided tour.

Indulge at the Fisher Brewing Company

Initially started by a German immigrant, Albert Fisher, the Fisher Brewing Company opened its doors in 1884. Operated currently by his great-great-grandson, Tony Fisher, this Salt Lake City brewery attracts thousands every year.

Visit the Victim of the Beast Gravestone

If you enjoy the feeling of goosebumps, this must-see in Salt Lake City will have you over the moon.

This looks like any other gravestone amongst the many in Salt Lake City Cemetery. But, upon closer inspection, prepare for shivers and intrigue.

The tombstone reads, ‘Lilly E. Gray, June 6, 1881 – November 6, 1958, Victim of the Beast 666.’ What’s even stranger is that no one seemingly knows what it means or where it came from.

Even more creepy is that the tombstone is lovingly taken care of and preserved, although caretakers at the cemetery have never seen anyone doing so.

Address: 200 N St E, Salt Lake City, UT 84103, United States

Marvel at the Gilgal Sculpture Garden

The curious Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a surprising and peaceful respite from the bustle of Salt Lake City.

It’s a simple yet overlooked piece of land dotted with over 70 engraved stones and sculptures. Book your tickets and find out more info on the garden’s official website.

Constructed by Thomas Battersby Child Jr, it took nearly two decades to complete. Beyond inscriptions of Latter-day Saint literature within the stone sculptures, there are also some odd ones with engravings sure to keep you intrigued.

Visit the Speakeasy at Bodega and the Rest

Although a speakeasy is a secretive underground bar and restaurant, Bodega and The Rest is well known locally. But its magic lies in the simplistic disguising of the true heart of this Salt Lake City attraction.

Appearing as a simple market and small bar, you gain access to The Rest if you have a reservation.

It’s a secretive part of the property where cocktails flow in abundance, and greasy diner-style food is a staple. While in The Rest, you’ll have to pack away your phone to preserve the secrecy.

Hours: Undisclosed

Address: 331 Main St, Salt Lake City, UT 84111, United States

Loveland Living Planet Aquarium

It’s easy to miss this gem if you’re not in the loop about what to do in Salt Lake City. The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium houses over 4,000 animals spread across five stunning habitats.

But isn’t that just another zoo?

No, here, the focus is set on marine life, with the highlight of the aquarium being the 300,000-gallon shark habitat. This features a tunnel through which you can walk without fear of becoming shark bait.

Ultimate Utah: Fun Winter Activities Your Whole Family Will Enjoy

Sledding down pink sand dunes, discovering ancient forts, and viewing dinosaur prints are just some of the fun winter activities in utah..

Julie Bielenberg

Home to seven national monuments, five national parks, and more than 40 state parks, Utah is a natural playground for outdoors-loving families. In the winter months, that means everything from sledding or skiing down pink sand dunes to crawling through lava rocks, discovering ancient forts, and viewing petroglyphs and dinosaur prints—sometimes all in the same day.

If that sounds like your idea of a fun winter vacation, it might be time to consider a family road trip or winter vacation to the Beehive state. Here are some of the best Utah winter activities for families.

INDOOR WINTER FUN: 13 Best Indoor Water Park Resorts in the U.S.

Fun Winter Activities in and around Salt Lake City, Utah

Sunset over Salt Lake City and the mountains (Photo: S. Greenwood)

The metro area and mountain ranges around Salt Lake City account for two-thirds of Utah’s population. Most people associate Salt Lake in winter with epic skiing, but there are plenty of other winter activities to discover beyond the slopes as well. Among the most walkable cities in the U.S., Salt Lake City is perfect for a winter stroll. Many people choose to visit Temple Square to marvel at the enormous church, enjoy the reflecting ponds, and take in the history of the Mormon religion in the state.

WINTER WONDERLANDS: 11 Best Ski Resorts in the U.S. for Families

The Maven District and downtown neighborhoods are a good place to shop or grab a bite to eat. Be sure to visit the Cotopaxi outdoor store. Other popular things to do in Salt Lake City during the winter are a stop at Caputo’s Market and Deli , shopping at the Land of Salt boutique , and taking the must-see downtown mural tour .

Just 25 minutes from Salt Lake City in Park City, Woodward Park City is a 60-acre ski and snowboard area that offers both indoor and outdoor adventures. For a fun, snowy night, try a two-hour tubing session on snow luges that are safe enough for the little ones and fast enough for big kids. On the mountain, you can enjoy Utah winter activities like skiing and snowboarding, as well as lessons, clinics, and camps.

A 45-minute drive from city center, Utah’s Antelope Island State Park has 42 square miles to explore inside the Great Salt Lake itself. Among the largest of the lake’s islands, the jarring cliffs and expanse of salt water call to mind visions of the Dead Sea. In winter and spring, you can enjoy numerous scenic hikes along the spine of the island, and will have the opportunity to spot bison roaming the landscape. Antelope Island is also renowned for its dark skies and stargazing opportunities. And there are campgrounds here if you choose to make an overnight trip out of it.

St. George and the Greater Zion Area Winter Activities

Winter snow at Bryce Canyon National Park (Photo: NPS)

The southwest corner of Utah has wild weather and an even wilder approach to outdoor adventure. This blossoming mecca of Utah winter activities is a 90-minute drive from the Las Vegas airport and has numerous non-stop flights from the local St. George airport, making it both an ideal fly-to and drive-to destination. And it’s not just attractive to vacationers, either. Over the past two decades, St. George and the greater Zion area has been one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the state. With a climate similar to Las Vegas, the southwest corner of Utah is a stark contrast from other parts of the state.

FIND A FLIGHT: 17 Best Flight Booking Sites for Cheap Airfares

The Greater Zion area is blessed with abundant historical sites and national parks to visit in winter : Zion National Park is an obvious draw, Bryce Canyon National Park is a two-hour drive away, and the Grand Canyon is just 2.5 hours away. Many other parks are within four hours.

For the ultimate in Utah winter activities, however, don’t skip over the local attractions. With more than 350 miles of mountain bike trails and four state parks, there are a lot of things to do here. Sand Hollow State Park has the Sand Hollow Reservoir (most popular in the warmer months for boating, fishing, and diving, but still quite scenic in the winter months). At Sand Mountain , there’s a red sandstone landscape and a popular off-road vehicle ride among the dunes. Snow Canyon State Park combines lava flows, petrified dune caves, and sandy trails with incredible camping and horseback rides.

PLAY ALL DAY: 10 Amazing Outdoor Activities in South Lake Tahoe

All this new attention for Utah winter activities in the region has spawned a wave family-focused lodging options, too. Staybridge Suites , which opened in 2020, has kitchenettes that are perfect for families, as well as snack hours, a heated hot tub, and a stunning sport court with basketball, tennis, and more. (There’s also an outdoor swimming pool if you visit when the weather’s nice.) The hotel is also pet-friendly and has an outdoor fire pit and a full-service restaurant.

Utah’s iconic Red Mountain Resort is a bucket-list family vacation spot for the tweens, teens, and college-aged kids in your family. The 55-acre resort for families with kids ages 12 and up is posh and can be either all-inclusive (with food and activity packages) or a la carte. Situated against the red rock cliffs adjacent to Snow Canyon State Park, the resort overlooks black lava gardens in an alpine desert. There are 82 rooms, 24 villa suites (with kitchens), Wi-Fi and flat screen televisions in each room, and options for three healthy meals a day at the onsite restaurant or from the grab-and-go café.

Red Mountain Resort’s adventure concierge handles all bookings, including more than 50 different fitness classes weekly, guided hiking and biking, full-service salon and spa, indoor and seasonal outdoor pool times, whirlpool visits, wellness testing, cooking demonstrations, and maps for the spiral labyrinth and walking trails on property.

The focus of the resort is health, wellness, and adventure. The original National Institute of Fitness, the Red Mountain Resort continues its commitment to outdoor invigoration with non-traditional spa and wellness activities such as energy healing, chakra balancing, intuitive astrology, and oracle readings. It’s also pet-friendly, another perk for families.

KID-FRIENDLY: 21 Best All-Inclusive Resorts in the U.S. for Families

Among the best Utah winter activities for families in the St. George and the Greater Zion region is ATV and Jeep Adventures , the area’s longest-running ATV and Jeep-UTV company. It has access to many historic sites and heritage areas not available to other companies, and can accommodate children as young as three with a car seat provided by the parents (so make sure that’s on your baby packing list ).

For families, I recommend the five-hour backcountry tour with lunch and snacks included. It covers 45 miles and visits dinosaur tracks, petroglyphs, an abandoned fort from the Black Hawk war era, and a gypsum mine where the children can “mine” glitter to take home by the bag.

Kanab, Utah’s Best Kept Secret for Winter Activities

You’ve probably never heard of Kanab , and that’s because so much of what makes this area a great destination for winter fun in Utah still feels a bit wild. The downtown strip calls to mind the quintessential and iconic American West. The area has been known as “Little Hollywood” for more than 80 years, and there are numerous abandoned films sets close to town that are fun to visit. Kanab is also gaining popularity for road cycling, but it’s the slot canyons like Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot—and other permit-only bucket-list-worthy formations such as The Wave and White Pocket—that truly deliver on the area’s promise of wild outdoor adventure.

Speaking of wild, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is five miles north of city center. The non-profit animal sanctuary is situated on 3,700 acres in Angel Canyon, with an additional lease of 17,000 acres. Here they offer tours and educational and volunteer opportunities. On any given day, the sanctuary is home to about 1,700 rescue animals, mostly dogs and cats, but also horses, burros, birds, rabbits, goats, pigs, and an assortment of other creatures. Make sure to book your tour of the facility in advance. There are numerous options from general tours to animal-specific visits.

Whether you’re visiting Kanab with a pet, or rescuing a new family member, Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile is the place to stay with your pet. More than pet-friendly, this hotel bills itself as pet-centric. And its extremely modern and chic, too, with special sleeping nooks for dogs and two “cats only” rooms as well. For the humans, there are stunning tiled bathrooms, sliding barn doors, sitting spaces, and even two-floor family bunk suites for the whole crew. Continental breakfast is provided for lodging guests in the Mercantile each morning. But the best part is the dog park and adjacent community fire pit behind the motel.

Feeling the need for sand and sun? Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is only a 20-minute drive from city center, yet it’s like something from another planet: dunes of pink sand formed formed by winds rushing through red canyons. It’s a haven for off-road adventurists and non-traditional sports. You can rent sandboards or sand sleds at the front entrance to the park. Hike up the dunes as many times as you want, and have a fun ride down. You can bring your own equipment, too—think skis, sleds, or a fat bike.

Adventure Tour Company offers a number of family-friendly tour packages that include visits to an abandoned movie set or a longhorn cattle ranch. For families, my pick is the evening campfire in the spring—it’s warm, cozy and located at a fort that’s been used to film everything from the Disney classic  The Apple Dumpling Gang  to the HBO show Westworld . Think hot dogs and sausages over the fire, some cowboy tales, and one heck of a sunset. Definitely Hollywood-worthy!

Alternative Lodging Options for Your Family’s Utah Winter Activities

Utah has one of the greatest newly constructed hotel selections in the United States, but the lodging options don’t stop there. From yurts to canvas tents, you can find plenty of exciting and unusual lodging alternatives for families, too.

Escalante Yurts

Named for its location in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Escalante Yurts are easily among the most luxurious family glamping yurts you’ll ever encounter. A quick turn off from Scenic Byway 12 between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks —not to mention just a short drive from Calf Creek Falls, Spooky and Peeka-Boo Slot Canyons, Devil’s Garden, and Hell’s Backbone Bridge—their scenic location only adds to these glamping yurts’ appeal.

Open year-round, Escalante Yurts are ideally situated and come with outdoor grills, giant swings, and an appealingly landscaped natural enclave. The spacious yurts are available in two sizes:

1) The 450-square-foot yurts that sleep up to four guests and come with a king-sized canopy bed, a pull-out sofa sleeper, gas grill, games, microwave, a coffee/tea maker, mini fridge, Wi-Fi, heater and air conditioner (think Utah desert extremes), and a large-screen TV.

2) The 900-square-feet yurts that come with the same amenities and sleep up to seven guests comfortably. The larger yurts also have a kitchenette and loft. All yurt guests receive breakfast each morning, and there’s also a community fire pit.

Stargazing opportunities abound after dark. Simply lay back in the plush beds and look up through the glass top of your yurt, or step outside to see spectacular skies. The solitude, hospitality, and attention creature comforts are remarkable.

Under Canvas

The Under Canvas lodging concept has exploded in popularity since launching a few years ago adjacent to many of America’s iconic national parks,  including several in Utah . Here you can stay in safari-style canvas tents with optional en suite bathrooms, king-size beds, and wood-burning stoves. Nightly s’mores by the campfire, complimentary camp activities, and adventure bookings that can be made directly from the main tent at each location are all part of the Under Canvas experience. Firewood is delivered to each tent and a tutorial on heating/cooling is included. There are also onsite restaurants and small “adventure stores” at each camp selling sundry items.

Canvas tent options include a Deluxe tent with king-size bed, a private en suite bathroom with shower, sink and flushing toilet, and wood-burning stove. The Stargazer is the same as the Deluxe with the bonus of a viewing window above the king bed. The Suite tent has all the same amenities as the Deluxe, but also has an added lounge area with a queen-size sofa bed. The Safari is also similar to the Deluxe, except there’s a bathhouse instead of en suite facilities.

And, a huge family bonus in Utah, is the Beehive tent. This is a kids’ tent that can be added to any other safari tent. The kids’ tent includes two twin beds, luxurious linens, and a side table with a lantern and fan. The Beehive tent is positioned directly adjacent to the adults’ tent.

Best Winter Hikes Near Salt Lake City

Salt Lakers rarely let winter’s bite prevent them from hitting the trails. The good news is that you don’t have to hit the ski resorts to get that Rocky Mountain high. Quick escapes out of the city — as a weekend warrior, for a midday lunch break or an after-work sweat sesh — are the next best thing. Want to know how to live like a local this winter? Grab some snowshoes or YakTrax and head to the hills.

Salt Lake City Winter Hiking Tips

Trailheads Near Salt Lake City

Hiking trails with views of salt lake city, bonneville shoreline trail.

Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) traces the shoreline of Bonneville Lake, the ancient lake that once filled Utah’s valley. The beauty of the BST along the Salt Lake Valley is that winter hikers can pick and choose their route and distance due to the number of trailheads that sprout along its route.

Corner Canyon

The Corner Canyon Trail System nestles into Draper’s South Mountain. A mountain biker’s paradise in the warm months, winter opens up to more foot traffic (alongside a small, but growing population of bikers taken by the fat-tire bug). As another BST limb, this maze provides multiple city-overlook routes, including Suncrest Trail (a 2.7-mile loop), Brocks Point Trail (a 0.8-mile out-and-back trail), Clark's Trail (a 3-mile out-and-back trail), and Corner Canyon Loop (a 3.8-mile loop).

Ensign Peak

Ensign Peak pays homage to Utah’s pioneers, including Brigham Young, with a well-maintained, one-mile, out-and-back trail. The hike is rated easy with a few steep slopes and small ledges. Signage reveals history, geology and plant-life lessons, but perhaps, the best part of the trail is the dramatic downtown overlook at 5,414 feet.

The Living Room

The Living Room is a BST offshoot and one of the most popular Salt Lake City hikes. Located above the Natural History Museum of Utah, it’s a steep, but short 2.3-mile hike to a perch of sandstone slabs resembling, you guessed it, living room recliners. The workout awards winter hikers with a dramatic view of the Salt Lake Valley.

4 Tips to Prepare for Utah's Winter Backcountry

Written By Evan Thayer

3 minute read

If you’re seeking solitude, adventure or just some untracked snow, the backcountry undoubtedly has a lot to offer. But it’s a playground that’s not without risk, so here are four tips to help get you prepared.

Snowy Hiking Trails Along The Wasatch Front

Bell canyon.

Bell Canyon leads to a waterfall 4.6 miles from the Granite Trailhead (near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon). Winter conditions may make the 1.3-mile Lower Bell Canyon Reservoir Overlook from the Boulders Trailhead (off of Wasatch Blvd.) a lighter option.

City Creek Canyon

City Creek Canyon quickly lifts winter hikers away from the bustle of Salt Lake City. The 6.5-mile escape meanders alongside the babbling City Creek through open meadows and barren trees. If you’re craving a hearty, delicious meal in downtown Salt Lake, it’s easy to shorten this out-and-back hike.

Donut Falls

Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon rewards winter trekkers with a waterfall cascading through a circular rock, a spectacle when dressed in icicles. Because the trailhead is gated in the winter, the 3.5-mile snow-packed trail stretches longer than it does in the summer months. Located near Brighton and Solitude resorts, winter visitors to this trail may experience ski traffic, especially on weekend mornings between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Neffs Canyon

Neffs Canyon tucks into Salt Lake’s East Bench, directly south of Millcreek Canyon. There’s a challenging 7-mile out-and-back option or an easier 1.3-mile loop. Both paths are dog-friendly but beware of sledders filling the trail's lower portion after a weekend snowstorm.

Millcreek Canyon’s Best Winter Hikes

Millcreek Canyon ’s trail system is one of the most popular places for winter hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing . The canyon’s entrance sits 12 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, so it is easily accessible whether you have a couple of hours or a full day blocked out for wintery adventures.

Dogs are welcome off-leash on odd days. Be prepared to stop at the pay station when leaving the canyon to pay $5 for day use (or $50 for an annual pass).

  • Millcreek Canyon Road ends at the Terraces Picnic Area in the wintertime. A gate closes the top portion of the canyon from November to July, leaving the thoroughfare above car- and bike-free. The two-lane road gets groomed once a week, making it a beginner-friendly slope for hiking with dogs, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and sledding.
  • Millcreek’s Pipeline Trail winds parallel to the Millcreek Canyon Road and allows trekkers to pick their poison of distance from Church Fork, Porter Fork or Rattlesnake Gulch Trailhead.
  • Grandeur Peak offers extreme winter hikers 5.9 miles of vertical and sensational valley views from the 8,222-foot mountaintop.

Winter Hiking Gear

Trails near Salt Lake can be snowy, icy or muddy, so be prepared with proper footwear — waterproof shoes or boots with thick treads or traction cleats are a must. Once equipped, there are many winter trails that lead to the most sensational valley views.

Winter Packing Tips

Snowshoeing Trails and Hiking Areas

Snowshoeing in and around Salt Lake City ultimately depends on the snowpack. Snowshoers can frolic in parks, school fields, dog parks and golf courses after a big storm. However, the best winter bet is to hit the bench trails like Bonneville Shoreline or head up the hills to Millcreek Canyon.

Traveling solo is like ordering a pizza with just the toppings you want—there's no need to compromise, and you get to savor every slice of adventure exactly how you like it. If you find yourself in Salt Lake County with no one but your own stellar company, consider this your ultimate guide to solo exploration. From navigating the streets to finding the best spots to snap those #solotraveler selfies, here's how to make the most of your time in Salt Lake County.

1. Getting Around: Navigating with Ease

First things first—how are you going to get from point A to point B without accidentally ending up at point Z? Salt Lake County is surprisingly easy to navigate, even if your sense of direction is more “spontaneous wanderer” than “human GPS.”

GREENbike Alongside Trax in downtown Salt Lake

  • TRAX Light Rail:  If you're looking for the stress-free way to get around, hop on the TRAX. It’s the light rail system that connects downtown Salt Lake City with pretty much everything you'd want to see, including the airport, shopping districts, and even a few outlying neighborhoods that have their own charm. Best of all, you can stare out the window without anyone asking, "Are we there yet?"
  • Greenbike:  Feeling a bit more adventurous? Salt Lake's bike-sharing program, Greenbike, is perfect for solo travelers who want to pedal their way through the city. With docking stations all around downtown, you can easily pick up a bike, ride to your next destination, and drop it off, all while enjoying the fresh mountain air. And the best part? You don't have to wait for anyone to catch up!
  • Scooter Rentals : For those who want to add a little "zip" to their trip, electric scooters are scattered throughout the city. Just download an app, scan a scooter, and off you go! Warning: Scooting is highly addictive, and you may find yourself grinning like a kid who just found out they're getting extra recess.

2. Solo Dining: Table for One, Please

Every September, Bob Carroll turns his driveway on Bedell Street in Deering Center into a stage for Porchfest, when bands play in front of homes throughout the neighborhood. He’s been a host for nearly all of the festival’s 10 years and credited the organizers for the hard work they’ve put in over a decade to realize their vision. This year’s festival is 12:15-5 p.m. Sunday, and more than 65 bands will play throughout the afternoon. (Carroll, 53, will host 3rd Shelf Cava.)

Porchfest is free and open to all. For more information, including a map and parking details, check the Deering Center Neighborhood Association Facebook page . This interview has been edited for length.

What is involved in being a host for Porchfest?

The date has always been ingrained. It’s always been the Sunday after Labor Day when people are mostly around, so having that in your schedule.

The actual day-of is pretty easy. Unless you’re doing acoustics. I just put out power and make it nice. People set up in my driveway. People might do that or set up on their actual porch. It’s mostly a willingness to have them use that space for an hour, maybe 45 minutes, for them to set up, and the hour that they’re playing. The bands do the brunt of the work. I put out power and some chairs. The committee does a lot of the work. They put signs out.

There’s not that much labor involved, and you have to have a willingness to have them use your space. Advertisement

Let’s say someone is coming to Porchfest for the first time. What advice would you give them about enjoying the day?

If you’re coming for a longer period of time or with your kids – it’s very kid-friendly – be prepared to meet some new people. It might be good to bring a snack because that stuff’s not really provided.

Get a map. The maps are posted, but also there’s hard copies. They’ll put it online so you can have a map on your phone. A lot of people might know two or three bands that are playing, so you can map it out.

But you don’t have to plan it out. You’re going to be surrounded by music in a six-by-six-block radius and you can just go with the flow and just have a fun day of hearing different cool music and just being around people that want to be outside and listen to music.

We try to free up the street, so there is parking at Deering High School or places that they don’t barricade off. It’s good to be prepared. You might be doing some walking. A bike is a great way too to utilize the space.

Do you usually stay at your own place? Advertisement

With two bands, it was a little harder, but I don’t usually have to go far. But if you’re a host, you still get to walk around and enjoy the music and see some of the crowds. You don’t have to stay the whole time. Most people might want to do that, but a half hour in or whatever, you can go see your friend’s band too and come back. People are really respectful about people’s property, about their space. That hasn’t been an issue for us. That’s another reason we continue to host.

Do you have a favorite Porchfest memory?

One got canceled over COVID, but the one the year after, in 2021, people just really wanted to be outside and see people and experience this. It was busy that year, and it ended up being a great day. I think people just wanted to be outside and doing stuff and seeing one another and supporting one another. I could go around and see a variety of different bands but also see a lot of people I hadn’t seen in a while due to being more around the house. That was probably my best memory, but there’s been a lot.

What do you think Porchfest has brought to the Deering Center neighborhood? How has it impacted the neighborhood identity?

It’s a strong sense of community that we look out for one another. It’s good to laugh and be social and listen to music. The music brings people together and has that sense of community. You look around, and you’re smiling and laughing, and people might be dancing, and you’re seeing kids that are now grown. If I had to sum it up, it would be a strong sense of community.
