Squeeze in some time for a swim—yes, the vacation truly never ends when there are fun things to do at Changi Airport!

Hands up if you miss taking a dip in the pool while waiting for your flight at Changi! If you didn’t already know, the rooftop swimming pool located within Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel is the first swimming pool in an airport, and you can pay to use the pool even though you’re not a hotel guest. Apart from the pool, it also features a jacuzzi, poolside bar and shower facilities. Head down to the pool to squeeze in a refreshing dip! Simply make your way from the departure or transit area of Terminal 1!

2. Catch a movie at our theatres with free screenings

Feeling bored? Catch a free movie at Changi Airport’s in-house movie theatres at Terminal 3.

Many memories of a holiday in Singapore begin at Changi Airport—from checking in and exploring the airport’s free facilities to finally waiting for the boarding call at the boarding gate. If you have a little more time between your flights and are after some free things to do, the movie theatres at Terminal 3 could be your new favourite spot. What could be a better way to while the time away than watching the latest blockbusters without paying a single cent?

3. Hop between Skytrains to explore the whole airport

skytrain transport at singapore changi airport, fun things to do

Efficient, effective, and elegant—our Skytrains are an experience on their own.

Changi Airport is 1,300 hectares—equivalent to 1,800 football fields. Yes, you read that right. As an airport this size, you can be sure that our priority is passengers’ comfort and convenience. If you’ve visited Changi, chances are you would have taken the Skytrains to move between the terminals. With them, travel time is shortened by half compared to walking—especially useful if you’re rushing for your flight because every minute counts. Jump between the different Skytrains and explore the different terminals! They connect Terminals 1, 2 and 3 at both the public and transit areas.

Pro-Tip: Take the public area Skytrains between Terminals 2 and 3 to get up close to the HSBC Rain Vortex in Jewel!

4. Slide down the world’s tallest slide in an airport

It’s perfect for both the young and the young at heart!

Pro-Tip: If you’re travelling through Terminal 4, we recommend you try out the slide experience there too!

5. Have fun at Chandelier at T4

Engage in thrilling things to do like hunting for dino eggs, unearthing fossils, and even meeting cast members from the Jurassic Franchise! Your little ones are in for a day of fun as they explore Jewel (even the Canopy Park), determined to spot all the captivating dinosaurs that await their discovery.

8. Visit the first Butterfly Garden in an airport

butterfly garden terminal 3 changi airport

Witness the fluttering of beautiful butterflies in Changi Airport’s Butterfly Garden at Terminal 3.

Ahh... Changi's famed Butterfly Garden. Hidden in a discreet corner of Terminal 3’s transit area, the Butterfly Garden is the world’s first in an airport. In its full glory, you will see more than 1,000 butterflies from 30 to 40 species native to Southeast Asia. Apart from butterflies, the garden features blooming flowers, lush greenery, and even a six-metre-tall grotto waterfall. It is also where you can witness the butterfly metamorphosis . Look out for the many cocoons maturing in the cage, you might even catch some butterflies emerging from their cocoons if you are lucky!

9. Check out some unique cactus species at the Cactus Garden

cactus garden terminal 1 changi airport

Located at level 3 of Terminal 1 at Changi Airport, the Cactus Garden is a rooftop garden that boasts some of the finest views in town.

You may not be a fan of Singapore’s hot climate, but these guys definitely are! Here at Changi, we don’t just bring you all over the world, we bring cacti from all over the world for you too! There are more than 100 species of unique cacti at the Cactus Garden at Terminal 1, including various forms of Cycads – a hardy survivor of the dinosaur era – and other interesting cacti like the Golden Barrel cactus, Old Man Cactus, and the giant Ponytail palm trees. You can even see some edible apple cactus and prickly pear cactus too! There is bound to be a cactus here that prickles your fancy if you're trying to find fun things to do to kill time.

10. Be enthralled by Terminal 2's latest garden Dreamscape

dreamscape changi airport terminal 2

Dreamscape features a digital sky and many upstanding rock and plant structures, and is a great spot for a brief respite.

Dreamscape is one of several digital installations we have all around Changi Airport. If you ever need a breather, step into Dreamscape at Terminal 2 and admire the digital sky, greenery and fish pond. Occasionally, the digital sky even turns into a thunderstorm, where you'll find hidden surprises such as a sampan boat passing by. Make sure to also step onto the elevated pond and look beneath your feet! The pond is built using transparent acrylic so you can spot all the different fishes swimming beneath you.

Check out the article linked above if you are curious to find out more about how this digital marvel came to life!

11. Admire the mesmerising Kinetic Rain

kinetic rain changi airport terminal 1

See if you can spot the different shapes that the Kinetic Rain at Terminal 1 installation can transform into.

There are many art installations in Changi Airport, but one of the favourites in Terminal 1 has got to be Kinetic Rain. Located at the Departure Hall, you wouldn’t miss this giant sculpture made up of 1,216 bronze droplets moving in perfect harmony. Watch closely and you’ll find that the sculpture transforms elegantly into multiple shapes – 16 in fact, ranging from an aeroplane, a hot air balloon, to even a dragon! Travellers around the world stop by the Kinetic Rain to be mesmerised by its deliberate, fluid movements.

Some have even told us that it calms and relaxes them! Watch the Kinetic Rain in motion, a treat for you, no matter where you are.

12. Admire the stunning Wonderfalls

the wonderfalls changi airport terminal 2

The digital waterfall – Wonderfalls - located in Terminal 2’s Departure Hall, is a sight to behold.

Let's face it, air travel is not equivalent to a trip to the spa (unless you’re at Changi 😉). Rushing for flights, security screening, layovers and delays can be stressful experiences, and that’s where our stunning art installations come into play. Art can have a calming effect on stressed-out passengers.

However, even if you are not a stressed-out passenger, you can still enjoy the beautiful art installations we have on display in the airport! Our latest installation at Terminal 2, the Wonderfalls, is a four-storey tall digital waterfall that will be sure to make you go “WOW”. Be sure to catch the special four-minute show that plays every 30 minutes to see our waterfall in all its glory.

The next time you come here, try spotting some of these masterpieces that can’t be missed!

13. Marvel at the enthralling Petalclouds

petalclouds terminal 4 changi airport

Admire the Petalclouds at Changi Airport Terminal 4, another kinetic structure worthy of a click.

“Petalclouds,” a kinetic art sculpture at Changi Airport Terminal 4, is inspired by the design theme of orchid petals found everywhere in the terminal. This massive dynamic artwork, which spans 200 metres across the Central Galleria, comprises six “floating clouds" which are a perfect marriage of art and technology. You will be mesmerised as you observe the fluid movement of the art piece moving in tandem with the classical music specially composed by BAFTA award-winning composer, Ólafur Arnalds. It truly is a moving experience (no pun intended).

14. Relax by the majestic HSBC Rain Vortex

hsbc rain vortex jewel changi airport

No matter how many times you’ve seen it, the HSBC Rain Vortex at Jewel never gets old.

The icon of Jewel Changi Airport is a spectacle to behold both in the day and at night. During the day, you will be enchanted by the sunlight catching the water as the mighty cascade flows 40 metres down to the basement. Come night, you will be dazzled by the display of lights and sounds as the fountain transforms into a magical show. Cooped up at home for too long? The HSBC Rain Vortex and the surrounding Shiseido Forest Valley are great places to head out to for a breath of fresh air.

15. Soak in the lush greenery surrounding the Shiseido Forest Valley

shiseido forest valley jewel changi airport, relaxing things to do

If you're looking for relaxing things to do, then bathe in natural sunlight at Jewel's Shiseido Forest Valley. Apart from learning about the types of flora, it also doubles as a tranquil retreat.

Escape from the hustle and bustle of the airport as you take a hike through the Shiseido Forest Valley at Jewel. A four-storey area that features walking trails, over 900 palms and trees, and 60,000 varieties of shrubs from all around the world, your worries will melt away as you soak in the luscious green canopy around you. You can choose to walk past the rocky falls on the eastern trail, which would give you a sense of grounded-ness, or you can take the western trail and be shrouded in a refreshing mist for a mystical experience. With the enchanting music in the background, a walk through the Shiseido Forest Valley is an ethereal experience.

16. Have fun at the Canopy Park

canopy park jewel changi airport

Located at the topmost level of Jewel Changi, the mazes and bouncing nets at the Canopy Park make it a recreational wonderland for all.

Looking for a play area that is built for kids and the young-at-heart? The Canopy Park at Jewel is an indoor wonderland for both children and adults! There are three first-of-its-kind play attractions, which are Sky Nets, Canopy Mazes, and Discovery Slides!

Both the walking and bouncing Sky Nets are attractions that will score high on both the thrill-seeking and enjoyment aspects. There are two types of Sky Nets, the first is a walking net designed to introduce a slight thrill factor as it straddles a five-storey high void, and it feels like a contemplative walk in the park where you have to watch each step for balance. The second net, the bouncing net, allows visitors to bounce their way amidst the canopy of the lush vegetation in Jewel.

Next, you can also have fun getting lost and navigating in the hedge maze and mirror maze. The former feels serene as you wander around the beautifully landscaped hedges, while the latter offers a fully immersive and trippy experience. How fast can you navigate out of the mazes?

As for the Discovery Slides, there are a total of four slides that make up the playscape! The slides are an integrated combination of a lookout platform and a kids’ play area where children of all ages and even adults, depending on their courage and ability, find the perfect spot for sliding.

Oh! And for those planning your wedding or pre-wedding photoshoots, you can now say ‘I do’ in front of the most romantic backdrops in Jewel. Talk to us to find out how we can make your dream wedding come true.

For many, the viewing galleries are more than just a place for plane spotting . Verdant nature and diverse entertainment meet a plethora of dining and retail options at Changi Airport.

The focal point of Singapore’s status as a world-class aviation hub, Changi Airport is an unforgettable tourist destination in its own right. With a slew of accolades to its name, Singapore’s main airport boasts a trove of exciting activities, from shopping and dining to entertainment.

The airport comprises four terminals and Jewel Changi , a ten-storey lifestyle hub that seamlessly links to Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and fuses artistry, architecture and nature into a single structure.

Whether you’re in Singapore for a layover, or spending a week in our tropical paradise, Changi Airport is bound to enchant the moment you land. Here’s a small sample of what you’ll experience.

Nature nurtured

Evening view of the Shiseido Forest Valley and HSBC Rain Vortex at Jewel Changi

If you're the type of person to arrive at an airport with just minutes to spare, consider changing this habit when flying out of Singapore's Changi Airport. Ranked by Travel + Leisure readers as the best airport in the world , a position it has upheld in T+L's World's Best Awards since 2012, it's the kind of airport where you'd secretly wish for a flight delay. Why? Because there's always something else to see at Changi, between its art installations, butterfly gardens, or lounging around the rooftop swimming pool.

Whether you're stopping over for two hours or 12, read on for the best places to eat, shop, and relax in Singapore's showstopping airport.

ROSLAN RAHMAN/Getty Images

The Art and Architecture

Spread out over four terminals arranged like a 'U', Singapore's Changi Airport is one of Asia's largest aviation hubs. In 2019, before the pandemic vastly reduced air travel to and around Asia, it saw more than 68 million passengers pass through its gates, and it's on its way to reaching similar numbers in the coming years.

The jewel in the airport's crown is aptly named the Jewel, a bagel-shaped complex of glass and steel that opened in 2019. Designed by Boston-based Safdie Architects, the space is home to the world's tallest indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex, which sees almost 10.000 gallons of water per minute fall from a round hole in the glass ceiling. Circling around it is the Shiseido Forest Valley , a terraced tropical garden with more than 900 trees and 60,000 shrubs spread out between elevated walking trails and balcony-like seating nooks. While the gardens are pretty at any time of the day (note, the waterfall only starts flowing after 11 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends), they're especially spellbinding after dark, when light installations by Tokyo-based art collective TeamLab illuminate the trees and a light-and-sound show sets the waterfall aglow at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.

But the Jewel isn't Changi's only artful feature. Scattered throughout the terminals, you'll find a fascinating collection of art and installations by creatives from around the globe. Terminal 1 is home to "Kinetic Rain," a mesmerizing moving installation of 1,216 bronze droplets suspended from the ceiling, while French artist Cédric Le Borgne's "Les Oiseaux" (the Birds) seemingly fly around the Terminal 2 arrival hall. Near the check-in desks in Terminal 3, you'll find "Daisy," a propeller-like installation by German artist Christian Moeller, which determines its movements based on passersby.

The Greenery and Wildlife

From Jewel's sprawling tropical gardens to the living, plant-covered walls greeting you upon arrival in Terminal 2, Changi might just be one of the world's greenest airports. There are gardens aplenty: on the rooftop of Terminal 1, an outdoor cactus garden is home to more than 100 species of cacti and arid plants, while the elevated walkways at the nearby Discovery Garden will let you get up close with vertical gardens of tropical plants. A sunflower patch is draped over Terminal 2's rooftop park, while the whimsical Enchanted Garden inside makes you feel like you've tumbled down Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole.

The gardens come to life in Terminal 3, where travelers will find a water lily–dotted koi pond and the world's first airport butterfly garden , home to more than 1,000 tropical butterflies from around 40 different species. The two-level garden feels like a slice of rainforest jungle and includes a cave-like tunnel and 20-foot waterfall, around which butterflies flutter between colorful flowers. At its heart, a glass 'Emergence Cage' gives insight into the lifecycle, from pupa to adult, of these kaleidoscopic creatures.

For safaris of a different kind, hop on a short taxi or bus ride to the Jurassic Mile , a kilometer-long jogging and cycling trail near the airport entrance that's dotted with giant eggs and life-sized dinosaur sculptures that seem to have escaped from Jurassic Park. Among them are raptors, a tyrannosaurus, and a brachiosaurus rising almost 16 feet into the sky.

As a multicultural melting pot of Chinese, Indian, Malay, and Western influences, Singapore is arguably one of the greatest food cities in the world. It's no surprise, then, that its airport is an excellent place to eat. From a quick pre-flight bite to a multi-course sit-down meal, Changi Airport has a restaurant for every occasion.

Singapore Food Street , in the transit area of Terminal 3, will sate your hawker food craving. Designed like a slice of 1960s Singapore with candy-colored townhouses, old-timey hawker stands, and tables spilling out on the faux sidewalk, this restaurant hub has outposts of some of Singapore's most iconic eateries. Seek out the peppery bak kut teh pork rib soup by Rong Cheng; Ah Huat's ultra-comforting chicken rice; and bark chor mee pork noodles by Tai Wah, which has been making the dish since the 1930s.

With more than 100 bars and restaurants spread out over its seven floors, the Jewel is another great spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Here, you'll find outposts of some of Asia's most beloved restaurant chains, with highlights including Taiwanese mainstay Din Tai Fung for its soup-filled xiao long bao dumplings; Hong Kong's Michelin-starred roast duck specialist Kam's Roast; and herbal hot pots by homegrown Beauty In The Pot. If you're in the mood for sushi, Osaka-based Sushiro hits the spot, while Singaporean chef Violet Oon's eponymous restaurant dishes up Peranakan-style classics such as beef rendang and chili-tossed prawns.

For a literal breath of fresh air, head to Terminal 2, where the breezy Hub & Spoke area is a lovely and little-visited spot to lounge in the sun. Home to a cafe serving classic kaya toast breakfasts, nasi lemak , and traditional kopi , this pocket of green makes it easy to forget you're still in the middle of one of Asia's largest airports.

The Things You'd Never Expect to Find at an Airport

If you've got an hour or two to kill between flights, catching a movie is always a good idea. Changi Airport has its own full-fledged movie theater in Terminal 3, complete with plush cinema chairs and an ever-changing schedule of the latest Hollywood blockbusters and international indie flicks. Best of all? It's completely free and open 24 hours a day.

There's plenty to do for active types, too. At the new Climb@T3 , in the basement of Terminal 3, you'll find a rock climbing and bouldering wall rising 24 feet in the air. Thrill-seeking travelers can rent climbing shoes and other necessary gear, and sign up for guided climbing workshops or unguided sessions for seasoned climbers. For a more playful workout, seek out the Bouncing Net and Walking Net on the Jewel's jungle-fringed top floor. Suspended up to 80 feet above the ground, this jumble of monkey bridges, trampolines, slides, and hammock-like nooks delivers endless fun for children — and those who are young at heart.

Don't forget to pack your swimming gear: for around $17 per person, you gain access to the lounger-lined rooftop swimming pool of the Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel in Terminal 1, which has a Jacuzzi tub, a pool bar, and shower facilities for a post-plunge refresh.

The Shopping

With more than 300 boutiques and flagship stores operating under its roof, Changi gives many malls a run for their money. Many homegrown brands have an outpost here, with highlights including Charles & Keith for sleek womenswear, HOOGA for Singapore-meets-Scandinavian home decor, and Asian Artistry for jewelry with Peranakan, Chinese, and Indian influences. At Jewel, you'll find shops by most big-brand retailers — including Southeast Asia's largest Nike store that stocks the brand's full sports and lifestyle collections.

Shop for snackable suitcase-stuffers at Bengawan Solo, which specializes in Singaporean kueh sweets and other confectionery; or stop by Irvins for dangerously addictive fish skin crisps flavored with salted egg. Lim Chee Guan, which has been in business since 1938, is a top spot to pick up bak kwa , charcoal-roasted and dried meats beloved by Singaporeans.

You will be redirected to your dashboard shortly. We will also call you back in 24 hrs .

Jewel: singapore airport’s very own tourist attraction.

Once simply catering to arriving and departing passengers, Singapore Changi Airport now offers much more than just air travel.

Singapore Changi Airport

Singapore Changi Airport remains one of Asia's largest transportation hubs. Yet, since October 2019, a particular tourist attraction on the airport site has been attracting almost 300,000 visitors per day to wander in the marvels on offer within its iconically designed structure. Let's take a closer look at 'Jewel' - the groundbreaking initiative unlike almost any other found at an airport worldwide.

A new concept for improving airport appeal

As we all know, many airport terminals have taken on the appearance of retail centers in recent years - seemingly preferring to sell things to people who never knew they needed them rather than get them to where they need to be as quickly and efficiently as possible.

That said, some airports are pushing the boundaries in what is possible to attract passengers through the doors - more space, better lounges, shorter queues, and friendlier staff. However, Singapore Changi Airport has gone one step beyond this by opening its doors to Jewel in 2019.

Jewel Changi Airport (also known simply as 'Jewel' or 'Jewel Changi') is a nature-themed entertainment and retail complex surrounded by and linked to the main terminal buildings at Singapore Changi Airport, serving both passengers and casual visitors alike.

Jewel includes gardens, attractions, a hotel, 300 retail and dining outlets, and early check-in facilities for various airlines. Said to cover a total gross floor area of 1,461,000 square feet (or 135,700 square meters) and rising ten storeys (five above-ground and five basement levels), its attractions include the Shiseido Forest Valley, an indoor garden spanning five storeys, and the Canopy Park at the topmost level, featuring gardens and leisure facilities.

However, the centerpiece of the complex, and arguably the most impressive attraction on offer, is the 'Rain Vortex' which is the world's tallest indoor waterfall at seven storeys high.

A success straight from its opening

Although first opened on a soft launch basis in April 2019, Jewel was officially opened six months later in October 2019, by which time it had already received 50 million visitors. This simply incredible number of early visitors exceeded the attraction's management's initial targets for the whole first year.

The conception of an Icon

Jewel was conceived in 2013 primarily as a vehicle to maintain Changi Airport's status as a major aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region. The concept was to play a crucial role as part of Changi Airport's long-term plans to double its capacity by the mid-2020s and, according to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, to create more opportunities for Singapore and Singaporeans.

Jewel was developed by the newly-formed organization Jewel Changi Airport Trustee Pte Ltd, a joint venture between Changi Airport Group (CAG) and CapitaLand, a major shopping mall developer and management company based in Asia.

According to Jewel corporate media, the project cost S$1.7 billion (US$1.2 billion). It did not require government funds or taxpayers' money, despite both entities being wholly or partially owned by Temasek Holdings. This state-owned investment company also owns a majority shareholding in Singapore Airlines , the national carrier.

Concept, design, and construction

Jewel first began with the need to expand the capacity of Changi Airport's Terminal 1 and its open-air car park. This led to a strategic vision with the conception of Jewel as a gem of a destination to augment Changi Airport's position as a leading air hub globally and boost its appeal as a stopover destination for travelers.

Following the initial concept's drawing up, Jewel envisioned combining a marketplace with an urban park. This was in keeping with the government of Singapore's over-arching vision of converting the city-state from being known as the 'Garden City' to the 'city within a garden'.

The original concept was for Jewel to be an attraction that would serve not only visitors and passengers using the airport itself but also be a standalone attraction in its own right, servicing visitors to Singapore and local residents alike.

Both the Jewel complex and the airport itself are located in the district of Changi, at the eastern end of Singapore and approximately 12 miles (20 km) northeast of Singapore's central business district. Built over the former open-air car park in front of Changi Airport's Terminal 1, the construction of Jewel expanded Terminal 1's arrival hall and baggage reclaim areas by 70%, increasing the terminal's handling capacity from 21 to 24 million passengers per year.

A consortium of architects designed Jewel's toroidal glass-and-steel façade under the guidance of lead architect Moshe Safdie, who Sands Corporation had already charged to design the equally iconic three-towered Marina Bay Sands Hotel in the waterfront Marina Bay district of downtown Singapore. The glass panels of the dome are framed in steel which rests on a complex latticework, which at night, allows the glowing dome to be visible from all surrounding areas.

The landscape architect was Peter Walker and Partners; the firm awarded the contract for designing the US National 9/11 Memorial in New York City , USA. This firm also worked with Safdie on the landscaping of Marina Bay Sands.

On completing the design for Jewel, lead architect Safdie said of his creation,

"The component of the traditional mall is combined with the experience of nature, culture, education, and recreation, aiming to provide an uplifting experience. By drawing both visitors and residents alike, we aim to create a place where the people of Singapore interact with the people of the world,"

The main attraction - The 'Rain Vortex'

Jewel is made up of several attractions, some of which charge an admission price, while others are free. Access to the building itself from within the terminals or from ground level is simple, with elevated walkways linking Jewel with Terminals 1, 2, and 3.

The main attraction within Jewel, which draws most visitors, is the Rain Vortex, located within the center of the building. The Rain Vortex, currently sponsored by HSBC, is the world's largest and tallest indoor waterfall, standing at 130 feet (40 meters) in height.

Recirculating rainwater is pumped to the roof to free fall through a round hole at up to 10,000 US gallons per minute (8,330 imperial gallons or 37,850 liters) to a pool set within the basement. An acrylic funnel at the bottom prevents splashing and insulates the sound of the cascade. The toroidal-shaped roof is constructed of more than 9,000 pieces of glass spanning 660 by 490 feet (200 by 150 meters) with a sloped oculus as the mouth of the waterfall designed to act, according to Jewel, as a continuation of the building completed in a liquid form.

To prevent excess humidity in the Jewel, the waterfall's flow alternates between cascades and trickles, reducing air turbulence. The design process by WET Design engineers included testing a one-fifth-scale model and a full-size partial prototype.

At night, the circular walls of the waterfall become a 360-degree stage for a free-to-watch light-and-sound show. Furthermore, to satisfy all comers, the Changi Airport Skytrain connecting the terminals passes above ground close to the waterfall, allowing passengers who are remaining airside within the airport to see both the Rain Vortex and Jewel itself.

Shiseido Forest Valley

A collaboration between Japanese cosmetics firm Shiseido and an art collective, the Shiseido Forest Valley is one of Asia's most extensive indoor gardens. The Forest Valley is located in the heart of Jewel Changi Airport, spanning five storeys and approximately 240,000 square feet (22,000 square meters). It houses around 3,000 trees and 60,000 shrubs of 120 species that live in high-altitude tropical forests worldwide.

Canopy Park

At the topmost level of Jewel, the 150,000 square feet (14,000 square meters) Canopy Park houses recreation and leisure attractions. About half of the total landscaping is hosted at Canopy Park, including two gardens: The Topiary Walk features animal-shaped topiaries at every corner. At the same time, the Petal Garden has seasonal floral displays.

The park includes a suspension bridge called the Canopy Bridge that is located 75 feet (23 meters) above the ground and offers a panoramic view of the Rain Vortex. At 160 feet (50 meters) in length, the Canopy Bridge also has a glass panel flooring at the center section that offers a view through to level 1 of Jewel.

The park also consists of two mazes at the eastern end of the Jewel, the Hedge Maze, and the Mirror Maze. The Hedge Maze is Singapore's largest, with hedge walls standing at 5 feet 11 inches (1.80m) high.

The maze features gates that can be pushed within that will change the maze's path. It ends at an elevated watchtower that offers a bird's-eye view of the entire maze. The Mirror Maze is located under the dome, with plants branching across the top of the maze. The maze uses mirrors and various reflections to bamboozle visitors as they attempt to escape!

Also found within the Canopy Park are the Sky Nets , Discovery Slides , and the Foggy Bowls . The Sky Nets provide children's play facilities, including a Bouncing Net and a Walking Net. The Bouncing Net is 820 feet (250 meters) long, suspended 8 meters above ground at its highest point. A separate 160 feet (50 meters) long Walking Net enables visitors to look 82 feet (25 meters) down to Jewel's Level 1.

The Discovery Slides feature four integrated slides - two tube slides and two sliding surfaces. The entire structure sits at an incline, 9.8 feet (3 meters) high on one end and 23 feet (7 meters) at the other, enabling visitors to view the Forest Valley and the Rain Vortex.

The Foggy Bowls are four concave bowls with depths of between 12 inches (30 centimeters) and 26 inches (65 centimeters) for people to jump in while a mist is released to create an illusion of playing among clouds.

The Changi Experience Studio is a 32,000 square feet (3,000 square meters) space with interactive games and displays relating to Changi Airport's history and allows visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how the airport operates.

Other Jewel facilities

Jewel boasts one of the most impressive retail and dining offerings of any airport in the world. The building has over 300 outlets providing retail options and dining experiences, offering cuisines from all over the world. When the various facilities within each terminal are also considered, Singapore Airport and Jewel form a virtual powerhouse to keep passengers fed and satisfied with their diverse retail needs.

Jewel can also count a multi-screen cinema on its list of attractions. Operated by Shaw Theatres, the cinema offers 11 screens, including an IMAX theatre with a seating capacity of 828

Amongst the array of other time-killing options above, Jewel also boasts its own hotel with 130 rooms, operated by the international hotel brand Yotel under its 'Yotelair' brand.

An integrated multi-modal transport lounge provides ticketing, boarding pass collection, and baggage transfer services for various airlines in a single location. Early check-in facilities enable passengers to check in and drop off luggage up to 24 hours ahead of regular check-in times within the terminals. There are also dedicated facilities for fly-cruise and fly-ferry passengers within the transport lounge.

An all-round visitor experience

For all those using Changi Aiport, passing through the terminals as arriving or departing passengers, or those in Singapore seeking an alternative visitor experience, a trip to Jewel is a must. With entertainment for young and old alike, there is something for everyone within the iconic cross-hatched dome-shaped building adjacent to Changi's terminals.

Furthermore, a visit to Jewel can bring tranquility, calmness, and a natural sense of peace to the experience of air travel. This experience in these post-pandemic disrupted times can feel far from relaxed or stress-free!

Having recently visited Singapore and Jewel, I cannot recommend the Jewel experience highly enough. Indeed, many airports around the world can only dream of being able to offer such an innovative and awe-inspiring attraction.

Although I am not a big retail fan, the Rain Vortex really is a sight to behold. And if you are lucky enough to catch one of the spectacular evening light and sound shows set against the raging and unrelenting deluge of water pouring from the ceiling, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Indeed, the wonder of it all is likely to remain with you for the duration of your onward flight!

Jewel Changi Airport

The ultimate guide to Jewel Changi Airport

Here are the best things to do, eat, and shop for at this stunning airport mall.

Cheryl Sekkappan

It's an understatement to say that Jewel Changi Airport is jaw-dropping. This stunning glass and steel dome development (by Safdie Architects, the same folks behind the iconic Marina Bay Sands), has got it all – gardens, attractions, activity, areas, retail, dining, and more. And of course, that cascading waterfall in the middle of the Shiseido Forest Valley.

A coveted stopover destination for travellers, Jewel Changi Airport is also a popular mall destination for Singaporeans. While the crazy queues seen at Jewel's initial mall opening have died down, it remains a magnet for travellers and locals in search of things to do, eat, and shop. To help you sort through Jewel Changi Airport's many offerings, here's a guide to the best things to check out.

Hike an indoor forest

Hike an indoor forest

Escape the busy airport and into a lush green sanctuary that is the Shiseido Forest Valley. Accessible from every level, the tranquil retreat is a reminder of Singapore and a garden city even before you step out of the airport. The forest valley is also the best place to stare in awe of the HSBC Rain Vortex, the largest indoor waterfall in the world – and the crown jewel of well, Jewel Changi Airport.

Catch a film

Catch a film

Live large and catch a movie at the Shaw Theatres in IMAX. Whether you're in Singapore on transit or an Eastie spending a weekend at Singapore's newest mall concept, watching a film is the best way to kill some time. Choose from the latest releases and end the day on a high, dining at one of the eateries in the mall.

Bounce on nets

Bounce on nets

Immerse yourself in the recreational wonderland that is the Canopy Park located on the top floor of Jewel. Leave your fear of heights at home and get your heart racing bouncing on nets and going down giant slides, all while taking in the views.

Check out what's blooming

Check out what's blooming

A world away from all the shops, the Petal Garden at the top of the Jewel Changi Airport is where you can enjoy creative displays of seasonal flowers from around the world. The garden in bloom will also feature some interesting installations making it one of the more Instagrammable spots in Jewel Changi Airport.

Get lost in a maze

Get lost in a maze

Weave your way around the largest hedge maze in Singapore. Don't get too cocky, we heard that you should allow yourself at least 30 minutes in the maze. At the core of it is the watchtower where you will be rewarded with some of the best views.

The Backyard Bakers

The Backyard Bakers

  • Restaurants

Bundt By The Backyard Bakers is famed for its blackout brownies – and rightfully so, as you'd be hard-pressed to find brownies as rich and chocolatey than the ones here. Now, you can get these delightful bakes in the East, at its second outlet in Jewel Changi Airport. Besides the brownies, you can also buy its fragrant madeleines, chunky banana bread, brookies (a cross between a cookie and a brownie) and beverages.

Birds of Paradise

Birds of Paradise

  • Ice-cream parlours

When you're done with shopping at In Good Company, grab a scoop from ice-creamery Birds of Paradise. There are perpetual long queues for its artisanal gelato created from herbs, fruits, spices and botanical ingredients – think flavours like Masala Spice and White Chrysanthemum – wrapped in a fragrant and freshly-made thyme-infused waffle cone.

Violet Oon

Whether you’re a tourist on the hunt for local cuisine or a Singaporean craving Peranakan comfort food when you touch down, Violet Oon Singapore is sure to hit the spot. Gather around the communal tables at the brand's biggest outlet to date and dig into  Violet's signatures like the beef rendang ($28), dry laksa ($29) and ngoh hiang ($20). Remember to get some roti prata ($2) to mop up any leftover gravy, and round off the meal with pulut hitam with coconut ice cream ($14) for dessert.

Elfuego by Collin's

Elfuego by Collin's

  • Pan-European

For an elevated Halal European dining experience, look no further than Elfuego by Collin's. Located at Jewel Changi Airport, this restaurant offers a wide spread of hot and cold appetisers, seafood mains, and charcoal-grilled meats. Start off with seared Hokkaido scallops ($20) or tuna tataki ($12) before moving on to mains that include baked Tasmanian ocean trout ($29) and Wagyu flank steak ($32). If you've got a big group of people with big appetites, then go for the hefty charcoal-grilled Australian Black Angus Tomahawk steak ($139). Want a good meal at a steal? We recommend coming for the two-course or three-course lunch set, which only costs $19.90 and $25.90 respectively.

A&W

  • Fast food outlets

After a long sixteen years since its departure from Singapore, A&W returns to make our Coney dog and root beer float dreams come true. Located at basement two of Jewel Changi Airport, the 80-seater joint is open till late, serving both famished international travellers and locals looking for a hot of nostalgia. All its classics are on the menu, including the famous root beer float ($3.50), chicken or beef coney dog ($5.20) and curly fries ($3.60). It also includes some new-to-Singapore creations that have become hits around the region. There's the Golden Aroma Chicken ($3.20) from A&W Indonesia and Cream Cheese Chicken or Beef Burger ($4.90), which are popular in its Okinawa outlets.

Shake Shack

Shake Shack

Shake Shack at Jewel Changi Airport is Singapore – and Southeast Asia's – very first outlet. Now that the insane queues have disappeared, you can comfortably head down to find out why this New York-born burger brand has grown to cult status despite its humble origins as a hot dog cart. Other than its juicy all-natural Angus beef burgers, do also try Singapore exclusives like the Pandan Shake ($7.80) or Jewela Melaka ($7.50/$9.50), a vanilla custard blended with coconut salted caramel, shortbread, gula melaka and Lemuel chocolate chunks.

Tonito

  • Pan-South American

Helmed by chef Daniel Chavez, the culinary mastermind behind Ola Cocina del Mar and Tono Cevicheria, Tonito is an all-Latin American dining experience where you can savour dishes from Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Argentina and beyond. As Mexican folk music plays in the background, tuck into hearty plates of tacos, quesadillas and anticuchos, Peruvian-style grilled skewers while soaking in the atmosphere and the majestic view of Jewel Changi's indoor waterfall. Hot tip: dine between 7.30pm to 8.30pm to catch the five-minute light and sound show.

Yun Nans

Taste the flavours of Southwestern China at the largest Yunnan food and beverage chain in the world. Yun Nans has over 150 outlets in China and is making Singapore, and Jewel Changi Airport, its first international outpost. The restaurant specialises in highland cuisine, as there are seven tropical belts in Yunnan, offering the region a diversity of ingredients you've probably never tried before. Yun Nans brings most of its ingredients in fresh from the province to make its signature dishes like the Steamed Pot Chicken Soup ($23.90), which uses steam and condensation to create a heady chicken broth best eaten with a plate of cold rice noodles, chicken, vegetables and egg tossed in a vinegary sauce. If you're up for a spicy challenge, get the beef stew in copper pot ($24.90), an intense beef broth filled with beef shin, tendon and offal peppered with a generous amount of chilli.

Beanfolks

Take a short break amidst all the shopping at Lemuel Chocolate’s Beanfolks– Singapore’s first-ever hot chocolate bar. With a variety of customisation options available, customers can tailor their drink to their exact preferences. Beanfolks offers seven different chocolates from different countries, and over 20 infusions ranging from vanilla to roasted rice, in an attempt to encourage customers to experiment and create their ideal chocolate flavour profile. Although most chocolate drinks tend to be rich and creamy, Beanfolks keeps it light and flavourful, avoiding an over-cloying drink even when choosing sweeter options such as white chocolate and sweet foam.

Starbucks

Not only is the Starbucks at Jewel Changi Airport the brand's first flagship store in Singapore, it's also the largest. Occupying two storeys, the outlet celebrates the journey the brand has taken in Singapore thus far, with art that highlights both the brand and local elements. If you love studying at Starbucks and the airport, this massive space offers free Wi-Fi, plenty of seats and power plugs alongside a wide selection of flagship-exclusive drinks and treats. Sample locally inspired offers like Hainanese chicken rice quinoa salad, satay chicken ciabatta and Milo tiramisu. Or if you want to stick to coffee, the store offers cups made through manual brewing methods like the Chemex or siphon brew. For something more refreshing on a hot day, check out what's on offer at its four-tap nitro bar. Favourites include the nitro flat white, nitro caramel macchiato and nitro green tea, which we dare say are smoother and richer than their hand-brewed counterparts.

Lady M

Watch the world (and Changi Airport's Skytrains) go by at Lady M's fifth local outlet. The spacious café is located along the mega-mall's wide walkway, making it an airy and open space ideal for people watching as you dig your fork into its signature mille crêpes. Also try its savoury items, including bites like crab salad on toast, cauliflower soup and chicken and pesto sandwiches.

Bring a slice of Lady M home with you, no matter your destination. The Jewel Changi boutique sells frozen mille crépe cakes as well as exclusive bon bons. There are over 23 different types available, including cocktail-inspired gummies like the Gin Tonic Casino as well as flavoured nuts and chocolates like the Cognac Orange Liqueur Chocolate. The bon bons come packed in sets of three, five and eight, and each box depicts the iconic architecture of different cities: La Mansarde (three-pack),  Paris’ Haussman-style architecture; The Brownstone (five-pack), New York City's townhouses and Qing Zhuan Dai Wa (eight-pack), Beijing's traditional hutong homes.

The race for the "world’s best airport” crown has been a two-horse affair in recent years, with Qatar's Hamad International in Doha and Singapore Changi leading the pack.

This year the title has switched, with 12-time winner Singapore being edged out of the top spot by its Middle Eastern rival in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2024.

In a strong showing for Asia, Seoul Incheon bagged third place – also being named 2024’s most family-friendly airport – while Tokyo’s twin facilities of Haneda and Narita took fourth and fifth spots.

Hong Kong airport saw a significant boost, up 22 positions to 11th place after the city shook off its Covid-19 hangover and passenger numbers rose.

Once again US airports were nowhere to be seen near the top of the table, with the highest ranked, Seattle-Tacoma, slipping six places to 24.

Europe continued to have a strong showing, with Paris Charles de Gaulle, Munich, Zurich and Istanbul all maintaining positions in the top 10.

In other news: "This year HIA celebrates its milestone 10th year of operations and we are truly honored that passengers have voted us Best Airport in the World for a third time,” said Qatar Airways group chief executive officer Badr Al-Meer.

Singapore's Changi no longer at top spot, Is India in the list? Check full list of world's top 20 airports

The prestigious Skytrax World Airport Awards, often dubbed the Oscars of the airport industry, have long been dominated by a tight race between Singapore Changi, one of the busiest passenger hubs for south east Asia, and Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

The two front-runners in the competition to be named "world's best airport" in recent years have been Singapore Changi and Hamad International in Doha.

This year the title has switched, with 12-time winner Singapore being edged out of the top spot by its Middle Eastern rival in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2024.

Seoul Incheon, which was also crowned 2024's most family-friendly airport, placed third in a strong Asian performance, while Haneda and Narita in Tokyo came in fourth and fifth.

Hong Kong airport saw a significant boost, up 22 positions to 11th place after the city shook off its Covid-19 hangover and passenger numbers rose.

US airports were conspicuously absent from the top of the chart once more, with Seattle-Tacoma dropping six spots to number 24.
