A TikTok user claiming to be a time traveller has shared a bizarre clip purportedly showing the final of the World Cup, including the teams and score.

TikTok user @worldcuptimetraveller has been sharing television footage of full-time scenes of matches which they claim to have taken in the future, The Sun reports.

Back in 2021 the mysterious poster, formerly known as @nsh.official, posted a prediction of the final score in the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.

They shared a clip showing Italy winning the final 2-1. Italy and England were locked up at 1-1 at the end of full time before Italy went on to win in penalties.

Now, the same user has sensationally claimed that they know who will be in the final of this year’s World Cup, and what the score will be.

Sharing footage which they claimed was taken three weeks in the future at the World Cup final, they claimed that Brazil will beat France 2-1.

The clip, shared with their 53k followers, shows Brazilian players and fans celebrating, while a dejected Olivier Giroud bows his head.

On the screen is the scoreline Brazil 2 – France 1, with the official-looking World Cup screen graphics.

The screen even shows the apparent goalscorers in the World Cup final, leaving the self-proclaimed time traveller with very little wiggle room.

According to the clip, the Brazil scorers will be Marquinhos and Richarlison, with Griezmann scoring for the French.

In the short video, which has garnered almost 2 million likes, the TikTok user said: “Brazil just beat France at the 2022 World Cup final. I’m a time traveller.”

The user added in the caption that they were “helping you out like last year” in reference to a video they made for the Euro 2020 final.

Many were impressed with the “time traveller’s” editing skills, even if they were more doubtful about their claims.

“Why does it look so … real,” one user said.

“Imagine if he gets it right again,” another added.

But others were quick to point out that the clip of Brazilian fans celebrating was actually taken from Richarlison’s goal in their opening World Cup match against Serbia.

While another pointed out that Giroud’s France kit appears to have only one star above the badge, meaning that it must be from before the 2018 World Cup final, where France won the competition for the second time.

The TikTok user, as well as claiming to have seen the final result coming also shared a clip of England thrashing Ukraine 4-0 in the quarter-final before the match even kicked off.

However, one TikTok user pointed out that the seemingly unnerving accuracy of the time traveller’s predictions isn’t all it seems.

Although they do seem to have got some scores correct, they have also reportedly deleted a number of predictions that didn’t come true.

World Cup image 'proves time travel is real' as 'flip phone' spotted after 1962 final

Conspiracy theorists have claimed that 'time travel is real' after a 'flip phone' was spotted in an image from the World Cup final in 1962, as Brazil beat Czechoslovakia 3-1

World Cup 1962

  • 13:37, 9 Dec 2022

Football fans pointed out a 'time traveller' that is lurking in the background of an iconic 1962 World Cup image.

In the picture, Brazil captain Mauro Ramos is seen triumphantly raising the trophy in Chile after his team beat Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the World Cup final.

But when you look closer at the image, you can spot what seems to be a 'flip phone' amongst the gaggle of reporters and photographers that are surrounding Ramos.

According to The Sun , the victorious Brazilian seems to be staring directly at the 'phone' in the snap, leaving conspiracy theorists to question the device.

Flip phones were not invented until 1996 when Motorola released StarTAC and upon further inspection of the image, it seemed that the device in question was much more compatible with the decade.

The person in the bottom centre of the photograph is holding a box camera rather than a mobile phone, which was not invented until 34 years after the image was taken.

The photographer is only using one hand, so the handheld camera remarkably seems to resemble a flip phone.

At the time, box cameras were a popular photography tool, made up of a simplistic square device with a lens at one end and film at the other.

However, this was not the first time that a 'time traveller' has been spotted with what seems to be a mobile phone in their hands before the device was invented.

Footage from 1938 also backed the theory that 'time travel is real', according to commentators.

In the film clip, a group of people were seen walking towards the camera, with one young woman standing out as she's holding something to the side of her head.

The woman in question was seen chatting as she walks in the crowd of people, with the 'device' clamped to the side of her head with one hand. She then seems to lower it before the film clip ends.

This has left conspiracy theorists questioning whether the woman was talking on a mobile phone, or whether she was holding another object to her ear.

Theorists then delved deeper into the claim, with one Youtube account stating that the woman in the footage was their great-grandmother, and she was in fact using a mobile phone.

According to YouTube user Planetcheck, the handheld device is an experimental wireless phone developed by industrial giant Dupont at their factory in Leominster, Massachusetts.

“The lady you see is my great-grandmother Gertrude Jones,” the user said.

“She was 17 years old. I asked her about this video and she remembers it quite clearly. She says Dupont had a telephone communications section in the factory.

“They were experimenting with wireless telephones. Gertrude and five other women were given these wireless phones to test out for a week.

“Gertrude is talking to one of the scientists holding another wireless phone who is off to her right as she walks by.”

In another mind-boggling revelation , a black-and-white image taken in New York City shows a man "holding a phone to his ear", much like the woman in the snap from 1938.

This image was taken two years before the woman was spotted holding 'the phone' to her ear, with conspiracy theorists claiming there were multiple 'time travellers' at the time.

While this could potentially be the case, the man could also be holding something else to his ear, or even just scratching his head.

Photo ‘proof’ time travellers EXIST as ‘flip phone’ is spotted during 1962 World Cup final celebrations

FOOTIE fans have claimed there is a 'time traveller" lurking in this iconic picture of the 1962 World Cup final celebrations.

The historical image of Brazil 's captain Mauro Ramos triumphantly raising the trophy in Chile has more than meets the eye.

The iconic snap of Brazil's captain raising the trophy seems to include a fan from the future

As well as being remembered as an eventful day on the pitch, the final has now ignited a bizarre debate after appearing to have been infiltrated by a fan from the future.

If you look closely at the gaggle of reporters and photographers trying to get close to Ramos, you may spot something that doesn't quite fit in.

Directly in front of the centre back, a person's arm can be seen wielding a recording device - that looks suspiciously like a flip phone.

And the strange object even caught the eye of the victorious Brazilian, who appears to be staring right at it.

Despite the legendary flip phone not being on the market for another three decades, this futuristic football fan seems to be years ahead of the rest of the crowd.

However, there is a simple explanation for the supposedly time travelling spectator appearing to capture the moment on a flip phone.

Upon further inspection, it becomes clear they are using technology that is much more compatible with the decade.

The person is actually holding a box camera rather than the mobile device made famous by Motorola.

Due to the angle it is being held at and the fact the photographer is only using one hand, it extraordinarily resembles a flip phone.

'Time traveller' shares footage of the 2022 World Cup final

'Time traveller' shares footage of the 2022 World Cup final

We don’t know what’s going on, but TikTok seems to be full of ‘time travellers’ at the moment.

There are dozens of users on the site claiming to be from the future, and one of them is trying to tell us the result of this year’s World Cup final.

The user in question, named World Cup Time Traveller ( @worldcuptimetraveller ), is claiming that Brazil will win this year’s tournament after beating France in the final.

"Brazil just beat France in the 2022 World Cup final,” they wrote, alongside a video showing footage of the two sides. The clip is actually pretty well cut together, with Brazil celebrating, Olivier Giroud looking glum and the scoreline showing 2-1.

It’s not the most inspired of selections, particularly as Brazil are one of the favourites to win the tournament as things stand.

However, World Cup Time Traveller has made a few correct predictions in the past after saying that Italy would win the final of the Euros 2-1 and predicting England's 4-0 win over Ukraine last summer too.

People are divided, and while most are treating it with the scepticism it deserves, some genuinely seem to think the user is an actual time traveller in the comments.

It does beg the question, though – why are they posting videos on TikTok telling us all the results, rather than just keeping quiet and making a load of money by betting on the games?

World Cup Time Traveller has competition when it comes to viral TikTokers. User Eno Alaric, ( @RadiantTimeTraveler ) has gone viral with his videos that supposedly give us insight into the future, and in one of the most recent videos he has told viewers to remember four upcoming dates in December .

Alaric also claimed back in October he warned that a meteor will supposedly hit the Earth on December 8.

Both teams ‘time traveller’ predicted would play in World Cup final have qualified for next round

Both teams ‘time traveller’ predicted would play in World Cup final have qualified for next round

Could their prophecy come true?

Daisy Phillipson

Daisy Phillipson

We don't mean to alarm you, but it looks like the two teams a 'time traveller' predicted would play in the World Cup final have qualified for the next round.

In case you missed it, earlier today we reported on a self-proclaimed time traveller who shared alleged footage from the football tournament three weeks in the future . Check it out:

As you can see in the clip, they reckon that France will be facing off against Brazil in the grand finale.

They also reckon Brazil wins the title, showing footballers and fans from the South American country celebrating the massive win.

Alongside the footage, they wrote: "Brazil just beat France in the 2022 World Cup final."

Now, there have been a plethora of so-called time jumpers hitting TikTok of late, and for the most part none of their predictions have come true.

But the same can't be said for this person, whoever they may be.

According to their account (@worldcuptimetraveller), they appeared to have accurately envisioned Italy's final score in the delayed Euro 2020 last year.

A number of their predictions appear to have come true.

The same goes for England's 4-0 victory against Ukraine in the football competition.

Regardless of their seemingly uncanny forecasts, the online community remains skeptical.

Some commenters have pointed out that they may have made a number of videos with different scores and kept them on private until the actual results come out.

But if this is the case, the TikToker can't back out of their World Cup prediction as they've published it well ahead of the final.

What's more, there are still plenty of people who have faith in the TikToker's suggestions.

And they might just be right, as both France and Brazil have just qualified for the World Cup's next round.

Brazil became the second team after France to be confirmed for the Round of 16 stages after beating Switzerland today (28 November).

Brazil just became the second team after France to qualify for World Cup's Round of 16 stage.

Following the news, one person excitedly wrote on the TikToker's video: "Brazil and France just qualified for the next round - your prediction's coming true!"

Others have pointed out some of the 'time traveller's' winning predictions.

"He got it right on Euro 2020 btw," said one, while another wrote: "Imagine if he gets it right again."

A third added: "If those two actually playing in finals... I'm putting my life savings on Brazil."

Well, with France and Brazil one step closer to the final, their prognosis can't be ruled out just yet.

Fans watch from copacabana beach as brazil plays its first world cup game.

Carrie Kahn headshot

Carrie Kahn

World Cup favorite Brazil is set to play its first game. NPR joins fans on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

It's a holiday of sorts in Brazil today, too - not officially, but kids got out of school early. Some stores and government offices closed. The occasion? The Brazilian national soccer team's first match in the World Cup - they beat Serbia two to nothing. NPR's Carrie Kahn watched the game, along with lots of fans at a bar on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro. Carrie, tough assignment. Paint a picture for us. What was it like at this bar during the game?

CARRIE KAHN, BYLINE: It was so tense in that first half, Ari. I was really excited to come and have some fun at the beach on Thanksgiving.

SHAPIRO: You almost couldn't drink your caipirinha, it was so tense.

KAHN: (Laughter) It was. But that first half was so tense. There was no cheering and then the first goal.

KAHN: It was, like, this collective cathartic release. You should have seen the face of our NPR producer here, Val De Margio (ph). He was finally smiling. It was great.

SHAPIRO: Well, tell us about the fans. Who did you talk to there?

KAHN: I spoke to a young man. He was 19-year-old Alesandre Magaliuns. He was so excited with his friends on the ground walkway along Copacabana Beach.

ALESANDRE MAGALIUNS: (Speaking Portuguese).

KAHN: He's saying, "I'm so happy. I'm so happy." He said this is the first World Cup he's really been into, and he's just sure that Brazil will win it all.

SHAPIRO: OK. Beyond that bar, tell us about what it sounds like amounted to a national holiday in Brazil today.

KAHN: Well, everyone is watching here. And it's not an official holiday, like you said, but schools let kids out early. And I've been seeing signs for days leading up to the World Cup with special hours when every time Brazil plays, shops are closed, and then they will reopen 20 minutes after the end of the game. With extra time, you know, you never know exactly when the game will end. The beach that I'm sitting on right now is the - all along the boulevard is jam packed. But there's no one on the sand. There's no one in the water. The bars are just packed. And there's - if you could hear the music just blaring behind me.

SHAPIRO: Yeah, I hear that.

KAHN: FIFA has set up a fan fest here, and there's just a concert going on. People are celebrating.

SHAPIRO: So what are Brazil's chances in the World Cup? Are they likely to go all the way?

KAHN: They are one of the favorites to win. A lot of people are saying that right now in the rankings. They are five-time World Cup winners. This is a record, and they're going for what's called a hexa, a sixth win. They have a really strong team this year with an amazing offense, with huge names like Neymar and Richarlison. He's the one who scored both of the goals today. They all are very strong forwards, and they all play in the European leagues. If someone were to get injured, Brazil has a long, deep bench that they can go to. They have three really strong goalies, and people are pointing to one weakness. They have a 39-year-old middle back, but they just say this is their World Cup to lose.

SHAPIRO: And just briefly, in our last 30 seconds or so, you've been reporting on some controversy over the yellow national soccer jersey that was associated with Jair Bolsonaro, who recently lost his reelection bid. Are people wearing that jersey today?

KAHN: Everybody here was wearing it. It seems to be that everybody's rallying around the team, and it looks like it's been a - it was a very bruising election here. The country was politically divided, but it seems like they will unite around the World Cup, especially if Brazil wins.

SHAPIRO: All right. Get back to the beach. NPR's Carrie Kahn in Rio de Janeiro. Thanks a lot.

KAHN: Thanks, Ari.

Brazil and France in World Cup 2022

France is the defending champion this year, having won the World Cup in 2018 . Previously it has been the world champion in 1998. Brazil is also a previous World Cup champion, having won the tournament on 5 occasions : 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.

This year, France was the first country to be qualified for the round of 16, also called the knockout stage of the World Cup. It did so after beating Australia 4-1 and Denmark 2-1.

Brazil saw a 2-0 win over Serbia and managed a 1-0 victory over Switzerland in the group stages, also sealing its place in the next leg of the tournament.

Whether the TikToker’s prediction comes true or not, football fans can expect to view some epic matches ahead.

The mysterious poster, known under the username @worldcuptimetraveller (formerly @nsh.official), has been sharing television footage of full-time scenes of matches which they claim to have filmed in the future.

“Time Traveler” announced the final result, as well as the players who would score the goals during the final match at the Lusail stadium on December 18th

According to the Tik Tok user, the two finalist teams will be France and Brazil, with the latter winning 2 to 1. The victory would give the “verde amarelha” team the longed-for sixth World Cup. The scoreboard would open with a goal by Antoine Griezmann followed by a goal by Marquinhos, who would tie the match 1-1. Richarlison would later give the victory to Brazil.

The “Time Traveler” uploaded videos where Brazil is seen celebrating its victory and the French team laments the results of the World Cup final. 1962, June 17: Time Traveler at the 1962 FIFA World Cup

Like the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup for men's football -- what Americans call 'soccer' -- only comes once every four years; the event started in 1930, and has been a major international event ever since. Teams literally from all over the world compete to determine who is, in fact, the best team in the world. In 1962 the event was hosted by Chile and ran from May 30 to June 17, with 57 teams coming from six different continents to participate. The cup was won, once again, by the team from Brazil, who had also won the cup four years earlier!

The event was notable for many things -- for examples, there were many violent matches ( much to the delight of the spectators ) and it was the first time the average numbers of goals per game dropped below three -- so overall it was an exceptional sporting event, the chance of a lifetime for a true fan to attend... all of which may explain why someone would want to travel through time to see it.

Yes, time travel. Sometime around 2007, when pictures from the 1962 world cup event were posted to the internet, someone noticed something very odd in one photo showing the Brazilian team's captain, Mauro Ramos, holding up the trophy after the team's win in Santiago, Chile. To be helpful, the strange object was highlighted... then posted to Pinterest and other social media websites to be sure no one missed it!

It appears that someone is using a cell phone to take Ramos' picture! Ramos himself is looking at this person, while everyone to the left of him is apparently distracted by something out of sight. How did a cell phone get to 1962?

And, in a related question, if you could time travel what sporting event would you run off to?!?

More Details, Please

The first thing that had to be done was to find a bigger and better resolution for the picture, something that doesn't always exist... luckily, in this case it was a very popular sporting event, and so a bigger and cleaner copy could be found. The strange object is much easier to see in the full resolution of the image; I've included a cropped section below that displays the object at the highest resolution.

Yep... it's a box camera, not a cell phone. It's similar in design to other box cameras in the same shot, but because its positioning in the picture only really shows one side and the fact the photographer is holding it up with one hand, it gives the impression of being used like a modern cell phone to take a picture.

While the answer in this case is a simple thing, the situation itself points up a repeating problem in paranormal 'studies' at the moment, a problem that commonly crops up in both 'time travel' and 'ancient astronauts/technology' claims... namely, the assumption that if you see something represented from the past that looks like something you know now, that they must be the same objects. In this case, if it looks like a cell phone, it must be a cell phone. All I can really say is that people in the past were just as interested in new stuff as we are today; and it shouldn't be a surprise that objects occasionally take the same shapes. That's why these claims have to be double-checked.

Personally, I'd love to see evidence for time travel show up -- I suspect it's quite possible, despite current scientific opinion -- but I also suspect it will be a very long time before I might find anything helpful!

17.9 miles of BeltLine trail to be completed in time for 2026 World Cup

A tlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Atlanta BeltLine, Inc.’s President & CEO Clyde Higgs announced today at a press conference that 17.9 miles of the 22-mile trail are expected to be complete for the 2026 World Cup matches.

Dickens said construction will start earlier on two Southside Trail segments helping to move up the completion timeline. Originally slated to be completed in June 2026, these segments are now set to be finished in the first quarter of 2026.

“By accelerating the completion of the longest continuous stretch of the BeltLine trail yet, we are accelerating equal access to economic prosperity and some of the best natural beauty Atlanta has to offer,” Dickens said. “From our federal and non-profit partners to our engineers and contractors, this has truly been a group project. Thank you to everyone involved in creating safer, healthier and more connected communities in our city.”

The accelerated construction schedule is part of the city’s efforts to prepare for the influx of visitors expected for the eight World Cup soccer matches that will be played in Atlanta in 2026. Each match is akin to hosting a Super Bowl, and organizers say visitors will number in the millions.

When the 16.3 miles of continuous trail is complete, it will connect 36 neighborhoods along the Northwest, Westside, Southside, Eastside and Northeast trails. The mainline and connector trails will provide access to parks and destinations, including Washington Park, Westside Park, and Piedmont Park . Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where the World Cup soccer matches will be played, is 1.6 miles from Washington Park, one of the closest access points to the BeltLine from downtown Atlanta. The Westside BeltLine connector trail is only half a mile from the stadium and ties directly into the BeltLine’s Westside Trail.

“We wanted to announce this construction plan as early as possible so that the neighborhoods and small businesses along the trail can maximize the opportunity that FIFA will bring,” Higgs said. “This will be a momentous milestone for us. To have more than 16 continuous miles of mainline trail completed of our 22-mile loop will be a gamechanger. People will be able to ride bikes, roll, run, walk, socialize and commute along the completed, continuous trail, allowing Atlantans and visitors to discover historic neighborhoods, BeltLine arts, retailers, businesses and destinations along the way.”

Southside Trail—Segments 2 and 3 will extend 1.9-miles from Pittsburgh Yards® in southwest Atlanta to Boulevard in southeast Atlanta. Once complete, these trail segments will provide safe passage under the 16 lanes of the Interstate 75/85 connector and under an active vehicle and freight rail intersection at McDonough Boulevard. The trail also will connect to several Atlanta Public Schools, including Carver High School and Slater Elementary, and parks including DH Stanton Park.

While the paved trail portion of the BeltLine continues to move forward, the future of rail on the corridor remains in flux. Dickens roiled rail supporters earlier this month with comments that appeared to backtrack on his initial support for transit on the loop.

In an interview with Atlanta News First , Dickens revealed he wasn’t sold on the idea of extending the Atlanta Streetcar from Downtown to Ponce City Market, which MARTA currently has in the planning stages . “Do we want it to be on rails, do we want it to be on rubber tires, do we want small pods or do we want to leave this as a walking trail?” Dickens said.

Instead, the mayor has touted four new infill MARTA stations as ways to create more access to the BeltLine.

Packers to open 2024 NFL season in São Paulo, Brazil, against the Philadelphia Eagles

time travel brazil world cup

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers will open the 2024 season against the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil.

The NFL said Wednesday the Packers will play the Eagles on Sept. 6 at Arena Corinthians , home to the Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians, in the league's first South American game. It will be a rare regular-season Friday night game.

The Packers' first International Series regular-season game was a 27-22 loss on Oct. 9, 2022, against the New York Giants in London. They were the final NFL team to play a regular-season international game. The Eagles also will play their second regular-season international game.

Teams designated for international games this year include the Eagles and Packers in São Paulo; the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars in London; and the Carolina Panthers in Munich, Germany. Opponents for the European games have not been named. Last year, the NFL announced its full international schedule in May.

It came down to the Packers or the Cleveland Browns as the Eagles' opponent. Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy has said on several occasions that Germany would be an attractive venue, but he also said the Packers would gladly play in Brazil, where Green Bay is one of the two most popular NFL teams.

"We're excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we're proud to be part of the league's continued global growth," Murphy said.

Packers-Eagles in Brazil: What's the time zone in São Paulo, the city hosting the season opener?

The matchup will be considered a road game for the Packers. Because visiting teams typically do not receive a ticket allotment for season ticket holders, tickets to the game are not available to purchase through the Packers. Ticket packages will be available through On Location, an official partner of the NFL, at onlocationexp.com/packersbrazil .

Arena Corinthians is home to Brazilian soccer team the SC Corinthians and hosted both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The stadium has a capacity of about 47,000.

Murphy said there is a benefit to playing the Eagles on a neutral field, given the difficulty of winning in Philadelphia.

The Packers, Browns and Eagles sent scouting parties to São Paulo last week to get a better sense of conditions and facilities.

"Being the first game ever in Brazil, there's not really people you can ask about their experience," Murphy said.

Peacock (NBCUniversal) has the right to exclusively stream the game . In keeping with a long-standing NFL policy, the game will be available on free, over-the-air broadcast television in the local markets of the competing teams as well as on mobile devices with NFL+. In Wisconsin, the local markets are Green Bay and Milwaukee. Kickoff time was not announced. São Paulo is two hours ahead of Green Bay.

The trip to São Paulo is longer than that to London. All told, the outbound trip to London is 10 hours, not counting layovers, while the outbound trip to São Paulo is 13 hours. Return trips are 12 hours from London and 13.5 hours from São Paulo.

The Packers earlier expressed concerns about the logistics of the trip, which Murphy said Wednesday from the team's Tailgate Tour were still being worked out. "The travel is kind of the same for both teams," he said.

São Paulo is on the southeastern coast of Brazil. It is 277 miles southwest of Rio de Janeiro and has a population of 12.3 million, making it about 1.5 times larger than New York City and as large as all of Illinois.

Packers have nine home games this season

The Packers have nine home games and eight road games this season. It is the first time Lambeau Field will host nine regular-season home games.

Home opponents include the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. Road games are against the Bears, Vikings, Lions, Eagles, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks.

The NFL will release its full schedule in early May, after the draft.

The Packers were the final NFL team to play a regular-season international game, although they did play preseason games in Toronto in 1997, Tokyo in 1998 and Winnipeg in 2019.

Argentina defeat Brazil in 2026 World Cup qualifier

time travel brazil world cup

Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 on Tuesday in an ill-tempered 2026 World Cup qualifying clash marred by pre-match crowd trouble that forced kick-off to be delayed.

A 63rd-minute header from veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi secured victory for Argentina as the world champions bounced back from last week's defeat to Uruguay to beat their bitter South American rivals.

The win at Rio's iconic Maracana Stadium leaves Argentina on top of the South American qualifying standings with 15 points from six games.

Brazil's third defeat of qualifying, meanwhile, leaves the five-time world champions in sixth place with seven points from six games.

Tempers had flared in the stands at the Maracana moments before kick-off, with Brazilian police seen using batons to drive back a block of Argentine fans at one end of the ground.

Several Argentina players went towards the disturbances in an apparent attempt to plead for calm, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez attempting to jump into the seating area at one stage to confront a baton-wielding Brazilian police officer.

Argentina's players led by Lionel Messi then returned to their dressing room as the clashes continued, with Messi appearing to say: "We're not playing, we're leaving."

The 2022 World Cup winners re-emerged onto the field shortly before 10pm local time and the match kicked off shortly afterwards, roughly 30 minutes later than the scheduled start time.

The febrile pre-match atmosphere spilt onto the field when play finally got under way, with Brazi's Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus being given a yellow card after just five minutes after clashing with Argentina's Rodrigo De Paul.

TENSE ATMOSPHERE

The tense nature of the contest continued throughout a poor first half, with neither side creating much in the way of goalscoring opportunities in a game littered with niggly fouls.

Brazil winger Raphinha was booked in the 14th minute for flinging an arm into the face of De Paul, and was lucky not to receive a second yellow five minutes later after catching Alexis MacAllister with a wild studs-up challenge.

Brazil meanwhile failed to register a single shot – either on or off target – until a 38th minute free-kick from Raphinha that deflected wide for a corner.

The only shot on goal from either side in the entire first half came on 44 minutes, when Brazil's Gabriel Martinelli lashed a muffed clearance from Argentina goalkeeper Martinez back towards goal.

Martinelli's shot was heading for the net but Argentina breathed a sigh of relief after defender Cristian Romero blocked the effort on the line.

Brazil started the second half more positively, with Raphinha having a shot blocked at the near post by Martinez after 54 minutes.

Martinez then rescued Argentina again, parrying Martinelli's goal-bound shot after a good run by Gabriel.

But Brazil were rocked after Argentina took the lead on 63 minutes with their first attempt on target of the match.

Giovani Lo Celso swung in an inviting corner from the left and the 35-year-old Otamendi soared above Brazil midfielder Andre to head home for 1-0.

A miserable night for Brazil got worse in the 82nd minute when substitute Joelinton – who had only been on the field for 12 minutes – was sent off for an off-the-ball clash with De Paul.
