‘It's Been a Magical Place for Me': Elton John's Final Tour Revisits LA Glory

Elton john returns to los angeles, where fans packed dodger stadium for two concerts in 1975 that became legendary., by lynn elber • published november 17, 2022 • updated on november 18, 2022 at 8:37 am.

Elton John’s audacious 1970 U.S. debut at a Los Angeles nightclub moved a critic to declare that the slight young Englishman would become one of rock's most important stars. It didn't take long.

Within five years, his reputation cemented by a string of hits including “Rocket Man” and “Daniel,” fans packed LA's Dodger Stadium for two rousing, sequin-bedecked concerts. This weekend, John will close out the North American leg of his last tour at the ballpark.

He calls it the right choice.

“I started off in Los Angeles at the Troubadour (club), and I want it to end here because it’s been a magical place for me,” John said in an Associated Press interview. The three-night stand is Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17, 19 and 20.

The final L.A. concert will be  streamed live on Disney+  starting at 11 p.m. EST Sunday. The three-hour event will open with “Countdown to Elton Live," which includes an interview with John and celebrity shout-outs.

John promised more bell and whistles than at the tour's other concerts — but hopefully without “any elephants or giraffes coming on stage,” he said, a wry reference to “The Lion King.”  The Tony-winning hit musical with songs by John and Tim Rice marks  its 25th anniversary on Broadway  this month.

The stadium stage is "enormous and fantastic. The videos are wonderful. I like to be surprised, so I will be surprised,” John said.

His influence “spans generations, making this last North American stop on his farewell tour one for the record books,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television.

The rock ‘n’ roll giant's enduring body of work includes “Your Song," “Tiny Dancer” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” He's earned six Grammy Awards, including a Legend Award, and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. His record sales worldwide have surpassed 300 million.

John is reaching new audiences through hit-making collaborations with younger artists, including Britney Spears (  “Hold Me Closer,”  an update of “Tiny Dancer”) and Dua Lipa  (“Cold Heart”) .

Lipa, Kiki Dee and Brandi Carlile will join him on stage Sunday, and it's no coincidence that all are women. He's had rewarding creative relationships with female artists, he said, and the three are “very important singers in my life.”

He and Dee had a 1976 hit with the bouncy  “Don't Go Breaking My Heart"  and she was with him at his first L.A. stadium show. John is close to Carlile, who joined him for  “Simple Things”  on his 2021 “The Lockdown Sessions” album, and their families vacation together. It's a big week for Carlile, who  earned seven Grammy nods  Tuesday.

As for Lipa, “I love her dearly,” John said. He credits their “Cold Heart” single with giving his career a boost and “launching me into a different stratosphere as far as streaming goes and connecting with young people.”

“I feel modern. I feel elated with working. When you work with a different artist, you always learn something from them, and that’s the whole point,” he said. His collaboration with Spears, which was suggested by his husband, David Furnish, yielded that and something more.

“It was a brilliant idea because having watched the documentaries and all the news footage about her horrible time with her family and conservatorship, I wanted her to feel appreciated by music fans again," John said. “To see that (single) become a success makes me feel so happy, that she’s hopefully feeling the love from those people.”

The  Farewell Yellow Brick Road  tour began in September 2018 in Pennsylvania with the first of the 300-plus dates scheduled worldwide. It was suspended in 2020 because of the COVID pandemic and resumed in 2021 in New Orleans.

In January, John heads to Australia and New Zealand, then moves on to Britain and Europe. The tour is set to conclude in Sweden next July.

The schedule would be demanding for any artist, but a genial, healthy-looking Elton showed no sign of strain in an interview last week, a few hours before a San Diego concert. Reviews have noted his vitality: “His unmistakable baritone sounds as mighty and resonant as ever, and his energy at the ivories remains positively infectious,”  Billboard magazine  said of his New Jersey stadium show last July.

“I'm not tired," John told AP. “The audiences are absolutely amazing. They dress up, it’s like a big party. And so rather than seeing it as a chore ... I’m going on stage every night thinking, ‘What are they going to be wearing tonight? What’s going to be the reaction tonight?’ At the stage of my career, it’s just an astonishingly rewarding thing to happen.”

He was a tender 23 when Robert Hilburn, the then-Los Angeles Times music critic,  predicted John’s stardom  after the Troubadour appearance in West Hollywood. Hilburn said John's performance that August night “was, in almost every way, magnificent” and called his songs (written with lyricist Bernie Taupin) “staggeringly original.”

Success followed success. While John describes the 1975 stadium concerts as the pinnacle of his career at that time, he wasn’t in the “happiest place.” He recalled a dark period of instability (dramatized in the  2019 biopic “Rocketman”)  that included a pill overdose three days ahead of the shows.

Such turmoil is far removed from his life now, which includes his two sons with Furnish.

“I’m happy, I’m contented,” said John, who’s in his third decade of sobriety. “I have a wonderful husband, a great family, I have great friends, a wonderful career. I’ve everything that any person could ever want in their life. I’ve never been as happy personally than I am now, at 75 years of age.”

“If I hadn’t got sober, I wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t have had the wonderful things that have happened to me since,” he said.

A prominent activist, he's shared his name and good fortune. He created the  Elton John AIDS Foundation,  which reports raising more than $500 million. In 2019, President Emmanuel Macron gave France’s highest award to John for his contributions to the arts and efforts to fight HIV/AIDS around the world.

Is the Yellow Brick Road tour really goodbye? “It is definitely the farewell tour,” he said, although a short-term residency, such as Kate Bush's three weeks at London's Hammersmith Apollo in 2014, has its appeal.

“But to be honest with you, when I come off stage in Stockholm next July 8, I’ll be looking forward to having a holiday, I'll be looking forward to taking a breather,” he said. Then it's back to work on projects already in progress, including “The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical.”

That's for starters.

“I'll be recording with other people, and I’ll be hopefully writing an album for myself. So it’s not as if I’m stopping doing anything,” John said. “But I’m not traveling. Traveling takes me away from my family.”

Elton John has announced the final North American leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which takes place in 2022.

The new dates kick off at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on July 15th and culminate with a two-night stint at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on November 19th and 20th. In September, John announced makeup dates for the tour, which was postponed due to the pandemic. The rescheduled trek runs from January through April. Elton John performs at Dodger Stadium to wrap U.S. leg of farewell tour

Amy Powell Image

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- It was a night to remember for Elton John fans as the singer-songwriter performed a lively and emotional set at Dodger Stadium to wrap up the U.S. leg of what is expected to be his final tour.

Los Angeles holds a special place in John's heart, as his 1975 performances at the ballpark - in a sequined Dodgers uniform - were considered one of the most iconic shows of his early career.

Sunday he performed in a glittering Dodger-themed robe that was a callback to that original outfit.

John, 75, has said he plans to retire from performing at the end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. After wrapping up in Los Angeles, he'll perform in Australia and New Zealand early next year to conclude the tour.

The crowd - and the stage itself - were filled with celebrities. John called Dua Lipa and Brandi Carlile to perform with him.

Carlile says Elton John has been an inspiration to her since childhood.

"It's so amazing," Carlile said. "It's a first time for me and a last time, of sorts, for him and it feels mystical."

Elton John has a long list of hits and has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. Some of his most memorable songs include "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," "Crocodile Rock," "Bennie and the Jets," "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Candle in the Wind" and many, many others.

He's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1988 in recognition not only of his artistic contributions but his charitable work.

The Dodger Stadium performance will be available to stream on Disney+.

Elton John has reached the end of the yellow brick road. He’s preparing for three final shows in Los Angeles, the city that launched his career .

After shows this Thursday and Saturday, the musician will take his final North American bow Sunday at Dodger Stadium, where he famously graced the stage 47 years ago in costumes that included his classic bedazzled baseball uniform.

Want to see John perform but don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars or count the headlights on the highway to Chavez Ravine? You’re in luck. Unlike in 1975, fans who can’t attend in person will have the opportunity to livestream “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.”

Elton John will take his final bow at Dodger Stadium. So let’s time travel back to his legendary 1975 concert

Beginning Thursday, Elton John will play his final U.S. concerts at Dodger Stadium, where, in 1975, he donned a sequined Dodgers uniform and made music history.

Nov. 16, 2022

“To feel the energy from the best fans, not only in Dodger Stadium again, but this time around the world from those watching live at home, will be truly extra special for me,” the “I’m Still Standing” hitmaker said last month in a statement.

“I’m thrilled to celebrate this momentous evening globally. I hope everyone feels the power and joy of performing on a stage as iconic as Dodger’s. Just like I did almost 50 years ago.”

John’s forthcoming concert at Dodger Stadium will cap the marathon North American leg of his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, which launched in September 2018 and was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s everything you need to know about the show, from viewing options to celebrity guests.

What time is the show, and where can I watch it?

The concert is slated to begin Sunday around 8 p.m. Pacific time, and fans can watch from home by tuning into “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium” on Disney+ . The show is expected to last approximately three hours.

A “Countdown to Elton Live” preshow will be available to stream on Disney+ starting at 7:30 p.m. Pacific.

Who’s performing?

John, obviously. But set to join him onstage are a few of his famous friends — including his “Cold Heart” collaborator Dua Lipa, his “Simple Things” collaborator Brandi Carlile and, of course, his longtime “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” duet partner Kiki Dee.

“When you work with a different artist, you always learn something from them,” John recently told the Associated Press . “That’s the whole point.”

Other “non-performing celebrities and influencers” also are expected to attend, according to Disney.

The song marks Spears’ first recording since 2016, following her freedom from her conservatorship, and another successful repurposing by John of his catalog.

What about Britney?

Britney Spears, who just recorded the “Tiny Dancer” remix “Hold Me Closer” with John, is not in the lineup and hasn’t performed live since 2018. But who knows? Maybe she’ll make a surprise appearance at Dodger Stadium.

The Spears collaboration “was a brilliant idea because having watched the documentaries and all the news footage about her horrible time with her family and conservatorship, I wanted her to feel appreciated by music fans again,” John told AP.

“To see that [single] become a success makes me feel so happy, that she’s hopefully feeling the love from those people.”

May 23, 2019

Can I still see the show in person?

Yes! Tickets for the concert are still available to purchase online . They range in price from about $131 to nearly $10,000.

Where to next?

Sunday’s Dodger Stadium concert will mark John’s final show in North America (at least as part of a traveling tour) — but he’s not done yet. In January, the Rocket Man will take his show to Australia and New Zealand before heading to the United Kingdom and beyond.

The tour is scheduled to end in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 8.

“To be honest with you, when I come off stage in Stockholm next July 8, I’ll be looking forward to having a holiday, I’ll be looking forward to taking a breather,” John told AP.

“I’ll be recording with other people, and I’ll be hopefully writing an album for myself. So it’s not as if I’m stopping doing anything. ... But I’m not traveling. Traveling takes me away from my family.”

Elton John

Three and a half years after Elton John announced his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour,” after an unavoidable pandemic delay, he has finally unveiled the closing stadium dates of that tour. It will make a final lap across Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand next year after the conclusion of the arena dates rescheduled from 2020 . The rescheduled 2020 dates begin in Germany on Sept. 1 and cover North America from January to April 2022.

The final stretch will kick off on May 27, 2022 in Germany, then move to North America, beginning in Philadelphia in July, and will wrap in November with a pair of dates at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, the site of an iconic Elton performance some 47 years earlier. 2023 kicks off with two shows in Auckland New Zealand on January 27 and 28, followed by soon-to-be-announced dates in Australia before the tour formally concludes there later that year. The tour will end nearly five years after its opening date in Allentown, Pennsylvania on September 8, 2018.

The full list of newly announced dates is below; see the rescheduled 2020 dates here .

Popular on Variety

Announcing the final dates, Elton John said, “Hello, all you wonderful fans out there. I’m coming to you today with an announcement I’ve been working towards for, well, all my life: the shows that I announce today will be my final tour dates ever in North America and Europe. I’m going to go out in the biggest possible way, performing at my very best, with the most spectacular production I’ve ever had, playing in places that have meant so much to me throughout my career. Whether it’s next summer in Frankfurt or at the legendary Dodger Stadium for the grand finale in the United States, I can’t wait to see you all on the road one last time. This has been an incredible tour so far, full of the most amazing highs, and I look forward to making more wonderful memories with you at these final shows. To all my friends down under, We’ll be seeing you too. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you in your town.”

The show is a crowd-pleasing tour de force of his biggest hits, designed to tug at the audience’s heartstrings as well as Elton’s own. Variety , reviewing the tour’s 70th show in New York in March of 2019, wrote: “He drops in enough deep cuts to keep the musicians and veteran fans on their toes (the second song he played was the 1973 deep cut “All the Girls Love Alice”), yet the set was so packed with hits that he’d reeled off “Bennie and the Jets,” “Tiny Dancer,” “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues,” “Border Song” and “Philadelphia Freedom” in the first half hour, and he’d barely scraped the surface.”

While this may be his final tour, it seems unlikely that it marks the end of Elton’s career as a performer — an irrepressible showman and die-hard music fan (who manages to host a remarkably contemporary weekly radio show , with an emphasis on new artists, on Apple Music 1), he will probably play spot dates and make television and other appearances for as long as he feels able.

For the US, Canada and UK dates, American Express Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public. Presale details are included in the tour routing below.

Public on-sales begin Tuesday, June 29 in Europe and Wednesday, June 30 in North America.

Ahead of the stadium run, Elton will mark his return to the stage this Fall in Europe on September 1 at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, then later to North America on January 19, 2022 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.

Elton John Plays Final US Concert: Images, Set List

Elton John  has played his final U.S. concert, delivering a rousing farewell set at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Over the corse of more than two and half hours, the music legend performed many of his most beloved tracks. The night opened with the classic 1974 chart-topping single "Bennie and the Jets," before then rolling into an emphatic rendition of "Philadelphia Freedom." "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues," "Tiny Dancer" and "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" were among the further highlights in a set that was full of them (complete set list can be found below).

Throughout the concert, Elton made reference to the historical significance of the night and his long relationship with Los Angeles. The singer mentioned that his  first performance on American shores took place at the Troubadour in West Hollywood . Five years later, he’d play a pari of sold-out performances at Dodger Stadium , the legendary gigs ranking among the most famous of his career.

Several celebrity friends joined Elton for his final American performance. Singer Brandi Carlile came out to duet on "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," while Kiki Dee later joined John in the duo's classic duet, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart."

After a brief pause, Elton returned for an encore, donning an outfit reminiscent of his famous sequined Dodgers ensemble from 1975. He welcomed pop star Dua Lipa to perform with him on "Cold Heart," the chart-topping hit from last year. Long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin was later brought onstage, much to the delight of the crowd.

As the performance was coming to a close, Elton spoke eloquently about his decision to retire from the road.

“I’m stopping touring, and this will be my last concert in America and Canada," the singer confessed. "And the reason why I’m [done] touring, I think you know, is because I want to spend time with my family. So, I want to bring them out and show you why I’m retiring: David, Zachary and Elijah.” At this point John's husband, David Furnish, and the couple's two sons came on stage, once again eliciting a roar from the crowd.

Elton then gave a heartfelt thanks to his U.S. fans.

"I became successful first in America," the rocker noted, while expressing his gratitude to everyone who purchased his music and attended his concerts. "So I want to thank you for that. You made me. Without America, I wouldn’t be here.”

Before playing his final song of the night, the rock icon delivered one parting message: “I wish you health, and love, prosperity. Be kind to each other. And farewell.”

Sir Elton John wows Los Angeles as final North American tour ends

elton john tour dates los angeles

Sir Elton John hailed his fans in Los Angeles for helping him make “history tonight” at his final tour performance in North America .

The musical megastar told crowds at Dodger Stadium “without America, I wouldn’t be here” during a show that included pyrotechnics, spectacular visuals and a surprise guest appearance from Dua Lipa.

The 75-year-old singer has been performing at multiple venues around the US and Canada as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

In the past week, he has played three nights at the Los Angeles stadium, with the final performance on Sunday.

The musical megastar took to the stage wearing a bejewelled suit jacket with large glittery lapels and launched into his first songs of the evening, Bennie And The Jets and Philadelphia Freedom.

“Tonight is a very special night,” he told crowds at the 56,000-seat arena. “We are creating history tonight, with the first ever global livestream. I’m so glad to see you Dodger Stadium.”

Throughout the evening, he bombarded crowds with a barrage of hits including Tiny Dancer, Rocketman, I’m Still Standing, and Candle In The Wind, which he famously sang at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997.

Sir Elton dedicated his performance of Border Song to the “lasting genius and legacy” of Aretha Franklin, telling crowds that the US singer’s cover of the track had helped launch his stateside career.

“Tonight is a very special night for me, a very emotional night for me, it’s been a long journey,” he said.

He described meeting and performing with Franklin, including a show shortly before the singer died in 2018.

“It was a surreal experience to be in the company of genius,” he said.

As well as British superstar Dua Lipa, he also brought US singer-songwriter Brandy Carlile and English singer Kiki Dee onstage to duet with him.

He and Carlile duetted on Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, which Sir Elton dedicated to late members of his band.

He said that all the musicians he had played with during his lengthy career had “inspired me to play better”.

Dee appeared to perform her 1974 chart-topping song Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, which the pair dueted on in 1976.

Sir Elton ended the main set with hit track Saturday Night’s Alright, which concluded with fireworks and confetti cannons.

Moments later he returned to the stage to begin his encore, dressed in a sparkling Dodgers-themed dressing gown reminiscent of the outfit he wore during his 1975 show at the stadium.

He invited fellow British superstar Dua Lipa on stage to sing with him and the pair shared an embrace before performing a rendition of their hit song Cold Heart.

Ahead of his closing number, Sir Elton told the crowd: “Without America, I wouldn’t be here.”

He thanked members of his crew before bringing his long-time collaborator and friend Bernie Taupin on stage to share the applause.

Sir Elton said he was bringing his touring to a close to spend more time with his family, before also bringing them out to further cheers.

“I wish you love and prosperity,” he said before beginning Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

Sir Elton’s first show at the stadium on Thursday marked his first time returning to the venue in almost five decades, having last performed there in 1975.

Ahead of the performance he shared a post to Instagram of himself poised over his piano wearing a bejewelled Dodgers team kit, in front of the packed out stadium.

Sir Elton previously said that Los Angeles had been “the setting for some of the most important moments in my life”.

“It’s a place that Bernie and I were inspired by when we created music, it’s the first place I ever performed in the USA and it’s where I’ve chosen to perform my final ever North American tour show,” he said, as he first announced the tour.

With his LA shows concluded, Sir Elton will next visit Australia and New Zealand before embarking on European tour dates.

The run will end with two special concerts at Vicarage Road, the home of Watford Football Club of which Sir Elton became chairman in 1976, on July 3 and 4.

Elton John in Concert

Sir Elton Hercules John, English singer, songwriter and pianist, has been a fixture of the soft rock and pop music scene since the early 1960s and toured the globe extensively in his decades-long career. John's 2016-2018 Wonderful Crazy Night Tour has taken him throughout North America, the Middle East and Europe, as did his 2012-2013 Rocket Man 40th Anniversary Tour and 2011-2012 Greatest Hits Tour. John's musical style is marked by his flashy piano work and distinctive lead vocals. He is best known for his easy-listening rock and pop tunes, though, he is equally accomplished at creating works for films and the stage. His live shows combine his expert musicianship with flamboyant costumes and infectious energy, creating an atmosphere that enthralls audiences worldwide. Elton John's musical prowess has earned him numerous accolades. He managed to have a charting Top 40 hit every year from 1970 to 1996 and has crafted timeless melodies like "Rocket Man," "Tiny Dancer," "Crocodile Rock," and "Bennie & The Jets." He's been nominated for nearly 30 Grammy Awards, and won eight, including Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and a Hall of Fame award. Elton John Background Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947, in Pinner, England, John was introduced to music at an early age. He started playing piano at age four, and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 11. After leaving the Academy in 1961, he made the decision to pursue a career in music and joined his first band, Bluesology. John met his longtime writing partner, lyricist Bernie Taupin, in the mid-1960s, and since then has collaborated with him on more than 30 albums. Classic albums like his self-titled Elton John and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player are considered masterpieces to many a rock fan, and works like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road catapulted John to his legendary status. Though John is an icon in the field of music, his worldly influence stretches beyond songwriting and performing. In 1992, he established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, with the express purpose of supporting HIV prevention, education and care for those living with the disease.

Outstanding.

I saw Sir Elton John in Bangor Maine on Nov 18, 2018. Unbelievable. He hit the stage I was in tears. Lived since 70's & I'm 70. I couldn't believe I'd ever have the most grateful experience I had to see him... Thank you Elton for coming to my hometown .

One in a million

Captain Fantastic Still Has It

Excellent show. Elton played most of the hits and the show was so much fun Five stars for the GOAT!

Tacoma, WA show 2022

Best concert I’ve ever been to and I’ve been to see quite a few shows. I actually cried because his voice is so beautiful and you can truly feel the love he has for the music and his fans. He is a world class showman, hands down. We had floor seats, spendy but no regrets. I would see him again in a heart beat. Simply amazing show!

A dream come true

My daughter shared this experience with me. Been a lover of Sir Elton since his first album. Once in a lifetime for me, but wish my brother was alive to see this too. Played"Funeral for a friend" at his funeral. He was a huge fan.

Best experience ever

Just amazing. What a true legend. The whole night was simply inspirational, he sounds better live and I feel honoured to have been part of this performance extravaganza. It was actually a really humbling experience. Note perfect both voice and piano and you could just see the love he has for the crowd and his music. Simply incredible wish I had the money to go again tonight !!!!

Beyond Amazing!

This was an incredible show! My husband and I had floor seats, and it was amazing from beginning to end. Sir Elton performed the entire time and never missed a beat. I am so glad we were able to see him live.

Sir Elton John wows Los Angeles as final North American tour ends

Elton John wraps up the U.S. leg of his ‘Yellow Brick Road’ tour in Los Angeles

Sir Elton John hailed his fans in Los Angeles for helping him make “history tonight” at his final tour performance in North America.

The musical megastar told crowds at Dodger Stadium “without America, I wouldn’t be here” during a show that included pyrotechnics, spectacular visuals and a surprise guest appearance from Dua Lipa .

The 75-year-old singer has been performing at multiple venues around the US and Canada as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

In the past week he has played three nights at the Los Angeles stadium, with the final performance on Sunday.

Throughout the evening he bombarded crowds with a barrage of hits including Tiny Dancer, Rocketman, I’m Still Standing, and Candle In The Wind, which he famously sang at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997.

Dee appeared to perform her 1974 chart-topping song Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, which the pair dueted on in 1976
