News: Per Gessle Confirms Roxette Will Continue With New Album And Tour Under PG Roxette

roxette on tour

An era is over. Another one is born.

With the birth of PG Roxette, Per Gessle will continue the adventure he and Marie Fredriksson began, just over 35 years ago. Together with members from the classic Roxette band and a sound echoing somewhere between “Look Sharp!” and “Joyride” Gessle returns to the musical peak of his life – with a new album and plans for a tour.

“Since the 80’s, my whole life has been spinning around Roxette and to this day it’s still what excites me the most. There are millions of people out there who still love the band so of course I want to keep our music alive”, says Per Gessle.

Years have passed and Per Gessle has been torn between different visions. The Roxette we once knew no longer exists, but Per strongly felt he wasn’t ready to bury Roxette for good. He still has so much to give, so many more songs to write. Most of all, Roxette brings him nothing but pure joy and energy.

“After all there are only two options with Roxette: Either to put the lid on or to continue in some shape or form. At first, I wasn’t sure which way to go but as time passed by it became clear that I want to continue this fantastic joyride. I want to keep the legacy of Roxette alive. I’ve written almost every song Roxette has recorded over the years and they mean the world to me. Hence, I feel this is the right decision. I’m so proud of this body of work and I love working with these people.”

Because even if PG Roxette surely marks the beginning of a new era, there’s also a lot for the fans to recognize; both in the new music and in the people who’ve created it. For the recording of the upcoming album, Gessle gathered the classic Roxette band – Jonas Isacsson, Clarence Öfwerman, Magnus Börjeson and Christoffer Lundquist with the aim to make a classic Roxette record.

“When I started to write, my ambition was to try to create a sibling to ”Look Sharp!” and “Joyride” – and that’s actually exactly how it sounds. I’ve wanted to create a modern production, but with the typical Roxette trademarks.

In 2016 Roxette did their very last concert. Three years later Marie Fredriksson passed away, after her battle with cancer for 17 years.

A Roxette without Marie sheds light on a burning question: Who can fill the shoes left by one of the greatest pop singers of our time? Simple answer: No one can.

Instead, Per is joined by two other singers very well known to most of the Roxette fans; Helena Josefsson and Dea Norberg. Both have been in the inner circle of Roxette for years.

“It’s impossible to replace Marie and that was never my intention. Our Roxette era was an unbelievable fantasy that we got to share together. I’m excited to be able to continue this journey, but in a different way. Needless to say that if Marie was still here, we’d be doing this together.”

Next up is the release of the PG Roxette album and eventually a tour with both new music and old Roxette material in the setlist.

“I’m super proud of all the amazing recordings Roxette did and the new material really feels incredible. It’s not always that easy to re-invent yourself when you’ve been doing this for as long as I have with a huge body of work as a result. Sometimes you feel you repeat yourself, but then suddenly you tread on unfamiliar ground and you get curious in a wonderful way. That’s when I feel this is my life, this is what I do best, this is where I belong.”

The PG Roxette album is set to release mid September, with a first single out end of May.

Per is working with PG Roxette alongside his upcoming unplugged tour in Sweden, which starts April 21.

Swedish pop rock duo Roxette is comprised of Per Gessie and Marie Fredriksson, and they are originally from Halmstad, Sweden.

The duo met in the late 70s when they were both part of two different bands, Gessle was part of Gyllene Tider and Fredriksoon was part of Strul and MaMas Barn. While recording her first solo album, Fredriksson lent vocal backup for Gyllene Tider’s first English album, “The Hearland Café,” which garnered attention from the United States based label, Capitol Records. Capitol, however, wanted the group to change the name, which is how they settled on the name Roxette. Unfortunately international success did not come for the group, resulting in Gessie pursuing a solo career.

Both Gessie and Fredriksson each put out two solo albums until it was suggested to them by EMI managing director, Rolf Nygren, that the two sing together. The two recorded a single together under the name Roxette entitled “Neverending Love.” The success of the single resulted in a quick record entitled “Pearls of Passion” which was released in 1986. Led off by two singles, they released their second album, “Look Sharp!” in their native Sweden in 1988. The album held at No. 1 on the Swedish album charts for fourteen weeks and won their first Rockbjornen Award. The third single off of the album once again caught the attention of EMI, who had previously thought they had no market in the United States, released the single on a global scale.

After extensive touring, Roxette returned to the studio in late 1990 to record and release “Joyride.” The album became a popular success, and became their best selling album. They then embarked on another large-scale tour including countries such as Germany, Australia and the United States. The tour, which reached over 1.5 million fans, lasted until 1992 and during the tour they had collected more material for another album released later in 1992. For the rest of the 90s the duo continued to put out new albums and tour, however due to change in popular music, they skipped over a tour of the United States. They also took a break from making music together.

Gessle and Fredriksoon reunited in 1998 to record a new album entitled “Have A Nice Day,” which was followed by a tour of Europe. They followed up with “Room Service” in 2001, which did well in their home country of Sweden, as well as Germany, but did not do as well as expected. The following year they received a Music Export Prize from the Swedish Government at the Grammy awards. Again taking a break, they reunited in 2009 and in 2012 released “Traveling.”

Live reviews

Roxette are the second-most successful pop act ever to emerge from Sweden; when the number one slot on that list is inhabited by ABBA, though, you quickly realise there’s no shame in being number two. After all, Roxette’s sales figures would likely sit them at the top of the pile in most other countries; over the course of a career that’s no stretched over almost thirty years, they’ve sold in excess of sixty million records across the globe, as well as seeing their records Joyride and Look Sharp! go platinum on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Germany. The duo - comprised of Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson - have had plenty to contend with over the years, too, both professionally - having to adapt to the demands of a constantly shape-shifting pop industry - and personally, with Fredriksson’s diagnosis with a brain tumour in 2002 forcing the pair to stay away from the live stage for seven years. They’re well and truly back on it now, though, finally making it to the Night of the Proms in Belgium in 2009 seven years after having to shelve an appearance. They went on to play a huge European tour to rave reviews, with classic cuts accompanied by new material on the setlist and a stunning live show bringing the work of one of pop’s best-loved duos to life.

Roxette often get overlooked due to the phenomenal success of fellow Swedish pop juggernauts Abba, however the band have enjoyed an incredibly successful career globally and unlike the Eurovision quartet, they continue to tour to their loyal fanbase.

They are a joy to watch live and really bring a quality of fun and free spiritedness to the show which goes down wonderfully with the audience. Supported by a brilliant band, they begin with 'Dress For Success' and the hits just keep coming. What I imagined would have made a worthy finale, 'It Must Have Been Love' is played mid-set as the audience bellow back the familiar lyrics whilst Marie Fredriksson conducts them to sway in unison.

With the feel good vibes at their very height, they continue with 'Dangerous' and 'Joyride' before disappearing to huge cheers to encore. They happily bound back onstage and thank the crowds for singing along to such great effort before one final performance of 'The Look' proves that there is no shame in coming second, especially where Swedish pop is concerned.

sean-ward’s profile image

The duo was wonderful. Great setlist, perfect stage presence, flawless musical performance. Marie had to perform the whole event sitting down in the same place, and yet her voice never faltered, the tune was never lost, her wild high notes and sudden improvs never failed. They drove us wild and we jumped an sang along at the top of our lungs. We clapped until our hands were raw and we felt lost when it was over.

On the flip side, the Berlin O2 Arena is one of my least favourite concert venues. It's huge and beautiful, but the concert started one hour and a half late, at which point the people in the pit were already exhausted and cranky. The sound quality was amateur hour, and there are no secondary screens of any sort, so the people in the nosebleed section (or in fact even in the good seats) might as well stay home and watch it on Youtube. If you ever buy seats in this venue, remember to bring a really good pair of binoculars.

lalomartins’s profile image

Even though I knew that Marie has serious health problems, and I was happy to take part in their concert in Budapest, I couldn't help feel that no power, but a kind of 'sick' energy came from the stage, made me feel unconfortable.

Songs are awesome, but she had a very weak voice and was seemingly not in mood to perform on wednesday. :(

palfi-orsi’s profile image

Marie's effort is admirable. She's got money enough to retire, but she fight against her illness and gives all their fans a priceless gift.

Per is as magnificent as always. He's the Boss of Pop Rock.

And last but not least, the band was awesome.

Roxette concert was amazing... They are such a nice duo... despite Marie is still a bit fragile they did a great show, perfect voices and even the piano song with the backvocal was AWESOME. I was so touched by their concert.

lots of singing and dancing from the crowd.

Sad to see Marie suffering with her ongoing illness but she can sing as well as the day they started.

Really hope they tour again

It’s been way too silent. We needed to talk. We took care of it. We reached out to a friend.

Well here it finally is, the illusive album we’ve been hearing about for more than two years. Now the big question is: was it worth the wait? Short answer: Yes. Here’s why:

roxette on tour

Roxette’s story came to a tragic end in 2019, when Marie passed away.

Spoiler alert: If you’re curious, here’s all you need to know about the forthcoming album. We highly doubt that Per will share this…

35 years ago a very important album was released. Important how you may wonder? Did it sell millions? Did it make waves? Was it extensively talked about?

Quietly, without any fanfare nor warning – an incredible Roxette historical artefact has surfaced on YouTube in the last week or so – it is the band’s concert from Fox Theatre in St. Louis Missouri, USA from 1992 as part of their epic “Join The Joyride” World Tour.

Roxette’s extremely successful album “Joyride” turns 30 years old today. We will share some thoughts about the album, what it meant to us. A review of the box will come this fall.

Today is no ordinary day. No today it’s 30 years ago “Joyride” was released. And what a smash it was!

Now that the Bag of Trix is finally out in the world, it’s made me think about how lucky we are as fans, in the respect that Per is just as big of a geek as we all are when it comes to loving demos, alternative and live recordings, remixes and outtakes.

This is the end, or is it? The final installment of the fine Bag of Trix. Today the boxes are released.

Dear Roxette fans,

You are hereby cordially invited to a crazy party hosted by Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson to be held in an old abandoned disco hall.

Well here it is, Volume 2 of this incredible project that Per Gessle has treated us with. We truly are lucky that someone like Per cares enough about the fans and the Roxette legacy that he’s rewarding us with a collection of intriguing recordings that most artists would never bother with.

Roxette Bag of Trix Vol. 1

Here comes volume 1 of “Bag Of Trix” – the Roxette collection which presents a total of 47 unreleased or nowadays unavailable recordings: demos, alternative mixes and recordings, Spanish versions, bonus songs plus other fun stuff from the band’s long and successful career 1986-2016.

Roxette on MTV Unplugged – 30th anniversary

MTV’s acclaimed music series, MTV Unplugged premiered in 1989 and it showcased top artists in the industry performing acoustic versions of their songs. Roxette was the first non-native English speaker band invited. It was a fantastic opportunity for Roxette to show their qualities as a live band to a large audience worldwide. They recorded their show live at Cirkus in Stockholm, Sweden on 9th January 1993 and it was broadcast during MTV’s Roxette Weekend on 20th and 21st February, then on Swedish TV a week later.

Per says in the Att vara Per Gessle book:

It was good for our self-confidence to do the songs acoustically. The sound on the studio versions was based almost exclusively on production technology, but it was still quite easy to strip the songs down and play them in a natural way. And that probably affected the way we approached the new record [Crash! Boom! Bang!] . We wanted to tone down some of the technical stuff and find a more organic sound.

Lead vocals: Marie Fredriksson Acoustic guitar & lead vocals: Per Gessle Drums, percussion & Samsonite suitcase: Pelle Alsing Backing vocals, accordion & mandolin: Vicki Benckert Acoustic bass: Anders Herrlin Acoustic guitar: Jonas Isacsson Piano & pump organ: Clarence Öfwerman Backing vocals, percussion & glockenspiel: Staffan Öfwerman

3 songs from the set – Joyride , The Look and Dangerous – were released on Roxette’s Rarities album in 1995, but for the rest we had to wait until their 20th anniversary in 2006 when they released the entire performance on a DVD in The RoxBox / Roxette 86–06 box set.

The 53-minute-long concert – 12 tracks + 3 short interview parts – on the DVD was what anyone could watch on MTV. The 8 bonus tracks weren’t on TV, they saw the light of day only on the 2006 release.

Setlist (they played the songs in this order originally)

  • Spending My Time
  • The Heart Shaped Sea
  • I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) (Aretha Franklin cover)
  • Heart Of Gold (Neil Young cover)
  • It Must Have Been Love
  • So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star (The Byrds cover)
  • Watercolours In The Rain
  • Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)
  • Here Comes The Weekend
  • Perfect Day
  • Listen To Your Heart
  • Church Of Your Heart
  • Queen Of Rain

There would have been a second encore with Things Will Never Be The Same , The Big L. and So Far Away , but unfortunately, it never happened.

  • So You Wanna Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star (The Byrds cover)

BONUS TRACKS

Now, 30 years later, it would just be amazing to have this gem on streaming services. Both as audio and video. Maybe one day?

Stills are from the DVD.
