They're still killing it. Played a nice variety of their hits, with perhaps a bit more focus on Frizzle Fry than on other albums, just three songs from post-Brown album, including one from their upcoming album. Was stoked to see them play Over the Falls... Les fucked up on Southbound Pachyderm and stopped, then threw in Mr. Knowitall as penance before resuming Southbound Pachyderm to finish out the encore. Hell of a show...

Les was interactive and chatty as always. This was the third time I'd seen them and it was just as good as the first, which was rad. Primus rules and I will see them again whenever I can.

Best concert ever!!! They played for allmost 3 hours. And they played all their old songs. The sound was perfect, the crowd was perfect, overall best night ever. Less claypool and his band rockend the crowd. I like their old hits kuch more than the experimental things less claypool tried the last couple of years. Primus played so good everybody was going out of their minds. Thanks for a great concert Guy's!

The atmosphere was really something else, like being on drugs but not really. It was a trip, all right. About midways through the concert they left the stage, and four POPEYE-cartoons played on a monitor for about 20 minutes. Some people got slightly irritated but I liked it. It was a nice break from the music and it really fits with Primus' antics.

Definitely worth going to!

The real locations of classic album covers, including rush’s ‘moving pictures’:, ac/dc – ‘dirty deeds done dirt cheap’ (1976).

The sleeve to the international version of AC/DC's 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap' was created by fabled English design group Hipgnosis. The building in the background was a motel on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The motel on AC/DC's 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap' cover is now called Hotel H-Wood.

Thunder - 'All The Right Noises' (2021)

Thunder's 13th studio album 'All The Right Noises' from March 2021 features a visually striking outdoor sculpture called the Singing Ringing Tree set against a dramatic skyline.

Located on the Pennine hill range overlooking Burnley in Lancashire, the Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered sound sculpture that stands 3 metres tall. Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu, the unique sculpture features pipes of galvanised steel that create sounds when the wind hits them. Luke Morley stumbled upon the sculpture when Googling "bizarre musical instruments."

Black Sabbath – ‘Black Sabbath’ (1970)

The seminal and highly eerie cover for Black Sabbath's eponymous debut album 'Black Sabbath' in 1970 was shot at the 15th Century Mapledurham Watermill, located on the banks of the River Thames in Oxfordshire.

A photograph of Mapledurham Watermill, location of Black Sabbath's self-titled debut album 'Black Sabbath.'

Six years after the release of 'Black Sabbath', Mapledurham Watermill featured prominently in the 1976 World War II movie 'The Eagle Has Landed'. Here's actress Jenny Agutter during location filming on 14th June 1976.

The grade II listed building of Mapledurham Watermill has become a mecca for Black Sabbath aficionados around the globe – including children's TV presenter Mr Tumble, aka Justin Fletcher.

Pink Floyd – 'The Division Bell' (1991)

Pink Floyd's longtime album artwork collaborator, the late-great Storm Thorgerson, had two gargantuan metal heads the size of double decker buses made for 'The Division Bell' sleeve and he positioned them in a field near the cathedral city of Ely in Cambridgeshire, which you can see in the background. In 2017, the two heads appeared at the magnificent Pink Floyd exhibition Their Mortal Remains at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

After extensively searching through fields, Bob Egan of the website Pop Spots discovered the exact location of Pink Floyd's 'The Division Bell' sleeve.

U2 - ‘The Unforgettable Fire’ (1984)

U2 recorded their fourth studio album 'The Unforgettable Fire' at Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland, however they opted for a different castle to adorn the sleeve – Moydrum Castle, east of Athlone in Ireland. Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry liked the mysticism of the ivy-engulfed ruined castle and thought it suited the music perfectly. The photo was a copy of a picture on the cover of a 1980 book In Ruins: The Once Great Houses of Ireland by Simon Marsden and the band's representatives had to pay an undisclosed fee for the copyright infringement.

The ruined, and now even more overgrown, Moydrum Castle in Ireland in 2020.

Yes – ‘Going For The One’ (1977)

After the legendary Roger Dean designed the band's previous four album sleeves from 1971's 'Fragile' to 1974's 'Relayer', Yes enlisted Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis fame for 'Going For The One'. The sleeve retained Dean's Yes logo, and featured a naked man looking towards the Century Plaza Towers in Century City, California against a blue sky.

Designed by Minoru Yamasaki (who also designed the original World Trade Center) and completed in 1975, the visually striking and geometric Century Plaza Towers are 174 metres high and the tallest buildings in California outside of Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Neil Young – ‘After The Gold Rush’ (1970)

Neil Young's third studio album from over half a century ago features a photograph of the musician walking through Greenwich Village in New York. The photographer Joel Bernstein was just 18 years old when he took the photo, and he was said to be "shocked" that Neil Young picked it.

A composite of the 'After The Gold Rush' album cover against the railings. They're located on the northwest corner of Sullivan Street and West 3rd Street, Greenwich Village, New York.

Led Zeppelin – ‘Physical Graffiti’ (1975)

The cover to Led Zeppelin's sixth studio album 'Physical Grafitti' features two side-by-side tenement buildings located at 96 and 98 St. Mark's Place in New York's East Village.

As you can see from this Google street view image, artist Peter Corriston and designer Mike Doud were forced to crop out the top floor of the five-storey buildings so they would fit onto the square sleeve better.

The Rolling Stones' video for their 1981 single 'Waiting on a Friend' was filmed on the front steps of #96 St. Mark's Place in an apparent nod to Led Zeppelin. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards meet on the steps of #96 before walking to the corner of 1st Avenue to the meet with the rest of the band.

Rush – ‘Moving Pictures’ (1981)

Created by long-time Rush collaborator Hugh Syme, the artwork to Rush's 1981 magnum opus 'Moving Pictures' is a very literal translation of the album title. A triple entendre, it features workers moving pictures, then the paintings themselves depict emotional – or moving – scenes, and finally the back sleeve has a film crew making a motion picture of proceedings. The sleeve was photographed outside the Ontario Legislative Building at Queen's Park, Toronto.

Defined by its characteristic pink-hue sandstone – giving it the nickname The Pink Palace - the Ontario Legislative Building in Rush's native Canada was completed in 1893. It houses the viceregal suite of the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and offices for members of the provincial parliament.

The Who – ‘The Kids Are Alright’ (1979)

The Who's 1979 soundtrack album to the film of the same name features a photograph of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon draped in a huge Union Jack flag outside a section of the Carl Schurz Monument at 116th Street and Morningside Drive in New York.

Bob Egan of the website Pop Spots has brilliantly superimposed the artwork onto the monument.

David Bowie - ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ (1973)

The artwork to David Bowie's seminal masterpiece 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' depicts of Bowie as Ziggy at 23 Heddon Street in London, outside the home of furriers "K. West". The photograph was taken by Brian Ward in monochrome and recoloured by Terry Pastor.

Here is a 1980s photograph of Heddon Street with the Ziggy Stardust album artwork superimposed on top.

On the 40th anniversary of 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' in 2013 a plaque was unveiled at 23 Heddon Street. Pictured are Spiders from Mars band members Woody Woodmansey and the late Trevor Bolder at the plaque's unveiling.

Led Zeppelin – ‘Houses of the Holy’ (1973)

The otherworldly cover image that adorns Led Zeppelin's fifth studio album 'Houses of the Holy' is a collage of several photographs of two alien-like children (siblings Stefan and Samantha Gates) taken at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland by Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis fame.

The 40,000 interlocking and mostly hexagonal basalt columns that make up Giant's Causeway are the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption some 50 to 60 million years ago.

The image on the inner gatefold sleeve of Led Zeppelin's 'Houses of the Holy' was captured at the medieval Dunluce Castle near the Giant's Causeway and depicts a silver man holding up the young girl.

The now ruined Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland, which was built over half a millennium ago in the Late Middle Ages. It's located on the edge of a basalt outcropping in County Antrim.

KISS - ‘Dressed to Kill’ (1975)

The artwork to KISS's third album depicts Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley wearing dodgy suits and standing on the southwest corner of 23rd Street and 8th Avenue looking north in New York City. The photo was taken by esteemed photographer Bob Gruen.

Another Pop Spots image with the KISS 'Dressed to Kill' album cover superimposed over 23rd Street and 8th Avenue.

Pink Floyd - Animals (1977)

Pink Floyd's tenth studio album depicts a floating pig above the imposing Art Deco megastructure of Battersea Power Station in London. Storm Thorgerson designed the sleeve but the idea was the brainchild of Roger Waters who regularly passed the station on journeys into central London from his home.

Located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, work on Battersea Power Station was completed in 1955 before it was decommissioned in 1983. The building was converted into flats in 2021 and 2022, and it's currently owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors.

The Clash – ‘The Clash’ (1977)

The Clash's eponymous debut album features artwork designed by Polish artist Rosław Szaybo and a cover photo shot by Kate Simon in an alleyway opposite Camden Market, London.

'The Clash' album cover superimposed on the real alleyway in Camden Town.

Eagles – ‘Hotel California’ (1976)

One of the best-selling records of all time, the Eagles' ubiquitous 1976 album 'Hotel California' is adorned with a photograph of The Beverley Hills Hotel in California. The timeless image was captured by photographer David Alexander while standing 60 feet above Sunset Boulevard on top of a cherry picker.

An aerial photograph of The Beverley Hills Hotel featuring the distinctive turrets and palm trees that appear on the 'Hotel California' cover. Work on the hotel was completed in 1912 and from the 30s to the 70s, the world-famous hotel became synonymous with Hollywood glamour.

Ramones – ‘Rocket To Russia’ (1977)

The photograph hat adorns the Ramones' third studio album was taken by the band's manager Danny Fields at 315 Bowery behind the legendary New York club CBGB.

Pink Floyd - ‘Wish You Were Here’ (1975)

The photograph of the stuntmen Ronnie Rondell and Danny Rogers for Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' was taken by Aubrey "Po" Powell of Hipgnosis at The Burbank Studios (now the Warner Bros Studios) in California. Decades before the advent of CGI, one of the stuntmen had to be set on fire wearing a flame-retardant suit and Rondell drew the proverbial short straw.

Steely Dan – ‘Pretzel Logic’ (1974)

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's third album features a photograph of a pretzel seller taken by the late Raeanne Rubenstein. The pretzel seller was standing on the west side of Fifth Avenue and 79th Street in New York near the Miners' Gate entrance of Central Park.

Deep Purple – ‘Deep Purple in Rock’ (1970)

The 'Deep Purple in Rock' album cover was the brainchild of the band's manager Tony Edwards, who suggested placing the US Presidents' heads on Mount Rushmore with the heads of the Mark II line-up; Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills in Keystone, South Dakota. Created by Gutzon Borglum, the sculpture features the 60-foot (18 m) heads of Presidents George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865).

Queen – ‘Made In Heaven’ (1995)

Queen's last studio album, released four years after Freddie Mercury's death, features a photograph at dusk of Irena Sedlecká's Mercury sculpture located at Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland.

Black Sabbath – ‘The Best of Black Sabbath’ (2000)

Black Sabbath's 2000 compilation album 'The Best of Black Sabbath' features a black-and-white photograph of four water-filled stone graves on the cover.

Led Zeppelin – ‘Led Zeppelin IV’ (1971)

The block of flats that can been seen on the back sleeve of the gatefold to 'Led Zeppelin IV' is Salisbury Tower, a 20-storey tower block on Middleway View in the Ladywood district of Birmingham. Completed in 1968, the tower is 57 metres tall and contains 116 flats.

Primus bring their Farewell To Kings show to the UK in September

US prog metal trio Primus will perform their Rush-backed A Tribute To Kings show at three UK dates in September

Rush's Geddy Lee and Primus' Les Claypool

Primus  have announced that they’ll be bringing their celebration of  Rush 's  A Farewell To Kings album to the UK in September.

The band, who have been out on the road in North America performing Rush's classic 1977 album, with full backing from Rush themselves, will play Glasgow O2 Academy September 27, London's Eventim Apollo September 20 and Manchester Academy September 30.

Primus frontman Les Claypool recently posted a photo on his Instagram feed playing bass with Geddy Lee with the caption 'Learning from the master...'. In an interview with  Rolling Stone , Caypool elaborated about the idea for Primus to cover the album. “I texted with him — I keep in touch with Geddy — just to make sure we weren’t trodding on something weird. So I checked in with him to see what he thought of it, and he was excited about the notion.”

Primus originally met Rush when they supported them on their 1992 Roll The Bones tour in North America.

Primus open the live show with  A Farewell To Kings  set before taking a break and returning to the stage for a set of their own material.

PRIMUS Cancels European Leg Of 'A Tribute To Kings' Tour

PRIMUS has canceled the previously announced European leg of its "A Tribute To Kings" tour "due to unavoidable logistical challenges."

The trek, which was supposed to see the members of PRIMUS pay tribute to their musical heroes RUSH by covering the "A Farewell To Kings" album in its entirety, was scheduled to kick off in Sweden on September 9 and make its way across Europe before finishing off with three shows in the U.K. and one final show in Dublin on October 1.

Late Monday night (June 27), PRIMUS released the following statement via social media: "We are very sorry to announce that due to unavoidable logistical challenges, PRIMUS has cancelled the upcoming European tour dates scheduled for the Fall of 2022.

"We apologize to our fans who were planning to attend and look forward to performing in Europe again soon. Ticket refunds will be available at the original point of purchase."

PRIMUS frontman Les Claypool recently told the Nashville Tennessean about why he and his bandmates decided on "A Farewell To Kings" : We always joked that we were going to play 'Hemispheres' in its entirety. And then it was, like, 'Well, maybe we should do something like that.' '2112' seemed a little too obvious. 'Moving Pictures' seemed a little too obvious. So, 'A Farewell To Kings' seemed like the right choice."

Regarding how PRIMUS approaches a tribute show, Claypool said: "I was one of those guys as a high schooler, sitting in the audience ... knowing every single note. RUSH fans are very scrutinizing. They'll tell you, we were one of the only bands accepted by the RUSH crowd back in the day when we were touring with them. That being said, it's very precious to a lot of people. We're taking it very seriously. I'll tell you, we've never rehearsed as a band this much in our lives as we did for this RUSH thing. We're doing it as close as we possibly can to the way they would do it."

As for PRIMUS 's relationship with RUSH fans at each show, Les said: "There's usually like four or five people scattered towards the front [who] are so into it. They're singing all the words and some of them get teared up. It's pretty amazing. I know for me, as a teenager, RUSH was such a big part of me starting out as a musician. I see these people [who] all these years have been so devoted to that band. To have people have that experience is very endearing."

Claypool previously told Rolling Stone that the "A Tribute To Kings" tour was about paying tribute to a band that has given him so much inspiration over the years.

" 'Hemispheres' was my first concert," Claypool said, referring to RUSH 's 1978 album and tour. "Originally we'd always kind of joked around about doing 'Hemispheres' … but we settled on 'Kings' , because A) it was the first RUSH record I ever heard and B) it contains 'Cygnus X-1' , which has always been my favorite RUSH tune. It seems to be a good one for us to tackle; '2112' seemed a little obvious."

"A Tribute To Kings" is just the latest in a long series of RUSH -related milestones for PRIMUS , which first opened for its musical heroes in 1992.

" Geddy , Alex and Neil had been superheroes to Larry , Herb and I in our teens," Claypool recalled, "so when we all became pals while touring together in the early '90s, we were pretty delighted; partially because of the musical geek-out factor but mostly because the three guys whom we had admired so much from afar turned out to be truly great, down-to-earth humans, and like us, a tad eccentric."

Watch Primus perform the entirety of A Farewell To Kings as they kick off their Rush tribute tour

Fresh from his lesson with Geddy Lee, a kimono-kitted Les Claypool took to the stage with his bandmates to tackle the daunting setlist from start to finish

Earlier this week, Primus frontman and bass guitar heavyweight Les Claypool revealed he received a bass lesson from Geddy Lee as the funk-metal outfit geared themselves up for their much-delayed Rush tribute tour, A Tribute To Kings .

Now, the fruits of Claypool’s labor have been revealed, and it seems as though the four-string lesson from Lee has been put to good use as Primus kicked off their two-and-a-half-month trip across the US on August 10 in style.

Performing their first show in Boise, Idaho, the three-piece tackled the entirety of Rush’s A Farewell To Kings from start to finish, making light work of the daunting setlist comprising A Farewell To Kings , Xanadu , Closer To The Heart , Cinderella Man , Madrigal and Cygnus X-1 – Book One – The Voyage .

From Larry LaLonde’s punchy musings on the electric guitar to Tim Alexander’s faithful drumming exhibition, the trio seemingly nailed every aspect of the performance – heck, Claypool even took to the stage wearing a kimono, modeled after Lee himself.

Elsewhere, the set also included the appearance of a Rush-accurate Gibson EDS-1275 for the thumping riffs of Xanadus , which Claypool propped up with a double-neck of his own.

As well as the comprehensive Rush tribute, Primus also performed a number of tracks from their own repertoire on the night, fleshing the setlist out with live renditions of Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers , Seas of Cheese and Over The Electric Grapevine .

Tales From The Punchbowl 's Wynona's Big Brown Beaver and Southbound Pachyderm were performed as encores.

Last year, while Primus were hard at work preparing for the 45-show-strong tour – and before his 1-2-1 tuition with the Rush icon – Claypool revealed the band had received Lee’s personal blessing for their proposed A Tribute To Kings concert.

“I talked to Geddy about it,” Claypool told Rolling Stone . “I texted with him just to make sure we weren’t trodding on something weird. So I checked in with him to see what he thought of it, and he was excited about the notion.

“He just got excited,” he continued. “He thought it was a great idea. You know, we go way back with those guys, so I think it made him feel good that it was going to be us that was going to do this thing. But I don’t know, you’d have to ask him. I can’t put words in his mouth, but he seemed excited about it.”

Primus are next slated to take the stage on August 13 at the Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington.

Les Claypool on Primus’ Rush Covers Tour: ‘It’s About Admiration for These Amazing Musicians’

By Hank Shteamer

Hank Shteamer

Update, August 2021: Primus ‘ rescheduled A Tribute to Kings tour kicks off in Boise, Idaho, on August 10th.

On November 16th, 1978, Rush came through the Bay Area on their Hemispheres tour. In the audience at the band’s Cow Palace show that night was a young Les Claypool , and 40-some years later, the Primus bassist still seems awed by what he witnessed.

“ Hemispheres was my first concert,” Claypool says. “Little 14-year-old guy who just threw up in the parking lot from drinking three Löwenbräus, having my mind blown by watching these guys do their thing.”

This spring and summer, he’ll have the chance to relive that adolescent thrill over and over, except this time he’ll be the one onstage. From late May through early August, Claypool and his Primus bandmates Larry LaLonde and Tim Alexander will honor their musical heroes on a massive tour where they’ll cover A Farewell to Kings — Hemispheres’ 1977 predecessor and the first Rush album Claypool ever heard — in full every night, before playing a full set of Primus’ own songs.

For Claypool, this will be the latest in a long series of surreal Rush-related milestones. Primus opened for Rush on tour in 1992, and since then the bassist has crossed paths with the prog legends many times. In 2006, Claypool performed at Rush’s Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction, and last year, Geddy Lee sat in with the Claypool Lennon Delirium in Toronto.

But the upcoming tour, called A Tribute to Kings, will no doubt take on added significance in light of the death of iconic Rush drummer Neil Peart in January. The timing, as it turns out, is a complete coincidence; Primus’ Rush covers run had been in the works since last year.

“We’re trying to be very sensitive about doing the tour and not having it be, ‘Hey, all about Neil,’ ” Claypool says. “It’s about admiration for these amazing musicians and friends.”

On the phone from Colorado, where he was gearing up for the first Oysterhead show since 2006, Claypool discussed how the tour came about, what fans can expect from the shows, and why he’s already nervous about hitting those late-Seventies Geddy Lee high notes.

Primus have been covering Rush for decades now, but how did the idea of this particular tour come about? Well, we had talked about doing an album in its entirety a while ago. Frog Brigade did Pink Floyd’s Animals in its entirety years ago, and it was an insane amount of work but it was also incredibly gratifying. We did the Willy Wonka thing with Primus, and we’d always talked about potentially doing Hemispheres because that was my first concert, and it may have been Ler’s [LaLonde] first concert too, actually. And when it finally came down to it, we started looking at the different records and settled on Farewell to Kings.

So when did you decide that you were definitely going to do this tour? [Our manager] Brad brought it to us last summer, I believe; last spring he started talking to Live Nation. So Live Nation thought it was a good idea, and that’s the tour, so away we’re going. We were going to do it last fall and then this whole Slayer thing came up. We had been talking about doing something with Slayer on and off over the years, and then the opportunity to do the final-final [tour in 2019] and send these guys off was a pretty cool thing, so we postponed the Kings tour.

Primus covered a bit of “Cygnus X-1 Book I” from A Farewell to Kings on that Slayer tour. Was that intended as a secret sneak preview? Well, we had started learning the tunes, and I throw in the “Cygnus” bass teaser every now and then throughout the years. That’s the thing about Rush tunes: The three of us tend to know lots of bits and pieces but very few entire songs because it’s fuckin’ Rush; it’s just hard. So it’s always been a common ground for the three of us. In fact, I remember when the three of us first got together, that was one of the things we bonded on as we sat there and jammed on bits and pieces of Rush songs. So the notion of doing the Slayer thing and doing even more of “Cygnus” seemed like a fun thing to do, so we did it.

So I heard that you actually had a talk with Geddy Lee about this before the tour was confirmed. What do you recall about that conversation? I talked to Geddy about it, yeah. I texted with him — I keep in touch with Geddy — just to make sure we weren’t trodding on something weird. So I checked in with him to see what he thought of it, and he was excited about the notion.

Do you remember anything in particular that he said? He just got excited; he thought it was a great idea. You know, we go way back with those guys, so I think it made him feel good that it was going to be us that was going to do this thing. But I don’t know, you’d have to ask him. I can’t put words in his mouth, but he seemed excited about it.

The Making of 'Fragile,' the Birth of Prog, and More with Yes Guitarist Steve Howe

See rush's geddy lee and alex lifeson cover gordon lightfoot song at toronto tribute concert.

You toured with Rush back in ’92. Did you actually meet them on the road or before? No, we met them backstage. I think Albuquerque was the first gig; I’m not absolutely sure. But, no, the three of us had been huge Rush fans in our teens, so when the opportunity came up to do that tour, it was pretty surreal. And then to meet those guys and then to befriend those guys and the subsequent years of friendship and whatnot was pretty amazing. And like I said, it was surreal at first, just ’cause there’s frickin’ Geddy and Alex and Neil standing in front of us and banging on lockers and whatnot backstage. It was an interesting time for young fiery lads coming up the ladder.

Tell me more about the banging on lockers. You guys were jamming? Yeah, we used to have little impromptu jams backstage. We had a little jam set up. And you know, we’re in all these locker rooms because we’re playing basketball arenas and whatnot, so we’d have these jams. And one day Neil would be banging on the kit; one day he’d be banging on the lockers; one day there’s Alex playing guitar using a tortilla chip for a pick. It was good times.

So in the subsequent years, you’ve remained pretty close to them? Well, there’s been long periods where I hadn’t seen any of these guys. The last time I saw Neil was at Stewart Copeland’s house. He had one of his Sacred Grove jams, and it was he and I and Neil and Danny Carey, and Matt Stone was there. I haven’t seen Alex in a while; Geddy and I and Alex went to dinner a few years ago when they were in San Francisco. We just kind of check in once in a while. But Geddy interviewed me for his book that he did , and we hung out. And part of the deal was, if I did his book he had to show me the correct way to play “YYZ,” which he did, and of course, I’ve been playing it wrong all these years. It’s always good to get schooled by Geddy Lee, you know? [ Laughs ] It keeps you humble.

Out of curiosity, how many times did you see Rush, and when was the last time? Last time I saw them was on the — what’s the tour they did that was like the Jules Verne…the last record they did?

Clockwork Angels. Correct, correct. We saw it in Vegas. In fact, I brought Stewart to that show. So that was the last time I saw them live. I don’t know how many Rush shows I saw. Obviously, we played a shitload of them, but prior to playing with them, I’d seen them at least once a year, maybe twice a year, from Hemispheres up through Signals.

So we have to speak about the elephant in the room, which is Neil’s death. Can you tell me how that might have affected these tour plans, if at all? Well, it makes the plans a little more… We’re trying to be as sensitive as we possibly can, so it doesn’t appear like we’re just jumping on the, “Hey, a superhero has died — let’s go out and do a tribute to him” type thing. So we’re trying to be sensitive to that, and also Neil was a very, very, very private person, so I don’t know how much he would want this or his family would want us talking about a lot of this stuff anyway. So I had known he had been sick for a while. Stewart was pretty close to him up till the end, so I would get little reports through Stewart every now and again as to what was happening. So it wasn’t a huge surprise, but it’s still a very jolting thing. When your heroes and friends start to leave the planet, it snaps you to.

“We’re trying to be as sensitive as we possibly can, so it doesn’t appear like we’re just jumping on the, ‘Hey, a superhero has died — let’s go out and do a tribute to him’ type thing.”

You said that you did have an idea that he was sick, so when this thing was being planned and you were texting with Geddy, did you know at that time that he was not doing well? I mean, there were rumors that he wasn’t doing well, but we didn’t know to the extent. And I never really talked about it with Geddy. It wasn’t something I really wanted to talk about, and it wasn’t something that even Neil wanted people to talk about. It’s even uncomfortable talking to you about it right now, ’cause like I said, he’s very private, the family’s very private, so I don’t think anybody in that camp really wants to harp on it.

That makes perfect sense. So in terms of the specifics of the tour, why the Farewell to Kings record? Well, like I said, originally we’d always kind of joked around about doing Hemispheres. That record has always had a very big place in my heart and head. But as we got to thinking about the record and how to tackle it — because it’s not going to be an easy feat, on many levels: A) I gotta try to sing Geddy Lee shit [ laughs ]. His older stuff is up in the stratosphere. I was texting with Geddy and saying, “Man, is any of this falsetto, or…?” And he was like, “Nope, that’s my full voice.” So I might need some help from the audience on some of this stuff. I gotta play the keyboard parts. But we settled on Kings, because A) it was the first Rush record I ever heard and B) it contains “Cygnus X-1,” which has always been my favorite Rush tune. It seems to be a good one for us to tackle; 2112 seemed a little obvious.

So will this be you guys playing that record and then a Primus set, or it’s just that record? No, we’ve done this in the past. Like I said, I did it with Frog Brigade with Animals and when Primus did the Wonka thing, we did a set of Primus and then we did the Wonka performance. So this is going to be the Kings set, then a break, then the Primus set.

Obviously there are some other Rush classics on this record like “Xanadu.” What’s rehearsal been like so far with these songs? Well, we’ve all been learning the material, but the only thing we’ve rehearsed together at this point has been “Cygnus.” And it was hard, but…that’s Rush! [ Laughs ]

Yeah, you kind of know that going in. So, I know in the past Primus have covered a few Rush songs, and I know you played “The Spirit of Radio” at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction. I usually don’t get nervous before performances, but I was scared to death for that performance, because it was extremely bizarre. A) The three of them were sitting there staring at us from their box, and B) it was an audience full of socialites; it was people in fancy clothes and jewelry, and I would imagine fake furs. It was an odd thing. It wasn’t a punter crowd.

But as far as Primus, we’ve done “YYZ,” we did “La Villa Strangiato” years ago. But lots of bits and pieces.

Geddy sat in with the Claypool Lennon Delirium last year, helping out on a cover of “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Has it been discussed that he could show up for one of these Tribute to Kings gigs? Oh, I don’t know; it’s not really on the table. But you never know. I didn’t expect him to come out. Because I knew he was coming to the Toronto show when we did the Delirium show up there, and I said, “Hey, you want to sit in on ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’?” And he’s like, “Well, you know, I’m not really a ‘sit-in’ kind of guy, but let me think about it.” And I was like, “All right, don’t worry about it.” Because one thing that drives me insane is, I enjoy sitting in but sometimes I just want to go watch the show, and when you know you have to sit in at a certain point, it kind of makes you not necessarily relax and enjoy the show so much. So I just said, “Hey, look, don’t worry about it. Just come hang and have a good time.” And then when it came down to it, he’s like, “I’m in, and he jumped up there and away we went.” And it was amazing!

Was that the first time you’d been onstage with him? I believe it was the first time. But then again, the old synapse doesn’t fire like it used to. My hard drive’s a bit fragmented. But it was the first time before a bunch of people. We’ve had little jams before.

This is a broader question, but do you feel that the success of a band as unusual as Rush helped to pave the way for a band like Primus later? Oh, definitely. Especially when you get to open for them, it helps to leapfrog you into the position of being able to play a place that’s not empty [ laughs ]. And Rush fans are very…I used to go to those shows and watch the opening bands and watch them not be well-received, and I remember, I don’t know who in particular said it, but back in the day, those guys, even their crew, saying that we were one of the best-received bands that had ever opened for them. So that was a badge of honor right there because I know that fan base. I was there for so many years.

But definitely bands like that paved the way for all of us. And, you know, to me, watching a band like Rush, especially when we were playing with them back then, it was not really cool to be a Rush fan. It was like a guilty pleasure. We actually got a lot of shit, especially from European press, for touring Europe with Rush. Because we were supposed to be this young, new…whatever the hell we were, but we were part of that alternative punk scene, and all of the sudden, here we were. I remember reading some British press, “What the hell’s Primus doing playing with these old prog dinosaurs?”

But perseverance wins the game and those guys…I remember watching them on the Colbert show and going, “Oh, my God, all of the sudden, now Rush is fuckin’ hip!” [ Laughs ] They just got touched on the shoulder by the magic wand of hipness of Stephen Colbert. And it was a wonderful, wonderful thing. I’ve taken great pleasure in watching those guys become extraordinarily popular these last handful of years, and iconic. And even your entity paying more and more attention to them. Because back when I was a kid, you never read anything in Rolling Stone about Rush or very rarely even heard them on mainstream radio.

Yeah, it’s been amazing. Since the documentary, there’s been a groundswell of interest. Yeah, and I think for Rush fans, part of that is a bit of a bitter pill, because they were always “our guys.” Those were our guys. It’s like being a Trekkie, or something. It’s a badge of honor; it’s something that not everybody understands or understood, but there was a big community of folks that you can identify with that did. And I’ve always joked that my wife is one of the few women I’ve ever met in my entire life that listened to Rush in her youth, and I always joke that that’s why we’ve been married for so long.

Getting back to the material, what’s it going to be like for you to tackle those Geddy vocals? Have you practiced much yet? Oh, yeah, it’s gonna be hard! [ Laughs ] But you know, I’m just gonna have to do it my own way; that’s just the way it is.

And obviously there are also some pretty esoteric lyrics to these Farewell to Kings songs. “Xanadu” comes to mind, in particular. [ Sings “Xanadu” ] “To seek the sacred river Alph/To walk the caves of ice.” Of course! I grew up on that stuff. And the lyrics on this record are unbelievable. I used listen to those records and try to put these stories together: [ Sings “Cygnus X-1 Book I” ] “Through the void/To be destroyed/Or is there something more?/Atomized at the core/Or through the astral door.” I mean, I remember watching that as a 14-year-old, watching the Rocinante go through the black hole up on the screen and just shitting myself the entire time, going, “Oh, my God, this is greatest thing I’ve ever seen!” So I’m stoked. I’m very excited. So I gotta get through these couple Oysterhead gigs tonight and tomorrow, and then I gotta get back hammering on this record.

It must be a real change in gears — it’s such a different sensibility from Oysterhead. But it’s super fun. You know, I’ve been doing this a long time, and you’ve gotta keep finding stuff that gets you excited to sit down and play your instrument. And this excites me. You know, I bought an old Rickenbacker — I’m gonna sit there and jam on it, man [ laughs ].

Are you guys all doing that, in terms of re-creating Rush’s old gear setup? You never know…

Can you say anything about the stage show? Yeah, we’re working on it. It’s gonna be cool. I mean, I’m very excited, ’cause we get to throwback to being 14 again, maybe 16 [ laughs ].

Primus has announced an extensive, 46-date, coast-to-coast extension of their A Tribute To Kings Tour, paying homage to prog-rock legends, Rush.

A Tribute To Kings will find the Bay area trio performing Rush’s 1977 album A Farewell To Kings in its entirety, following a set of their own music. As bassist Les Claypool told Rolling Stone , the tour is about paying tribute to a band that has given him so much inspiration over the years.

“ Hemispheres was my first concert,” Claypool said, referring to Rush’s 1978 album and tour. “Originally we’d always kind of joked around about doing Hemispheres …but we settled on Kings , because A) it was the first Rush record I ever heard and B) it contains ‘Cygnus X-1,’ which has always been my favorite Rush tune. It seems to be a good one for us to tackle; 2112 seemed a little obvious.

“Geddy, Alex and Neil had been superheroes to Larry, Herb and I in our teens,” Claypool recalled, “so when we all became pals while touring together in the early 90s, we were pretty delighted; partially because of the musical geek-out factor but mostly because the three guys whom we had admired so much from afar, turned out to be truly great, down-to-earth humans, and like us, a tad eccentric.”

Watch Primus Kick Off Rush Tribute Tour: Set List and Videos

Primus kicked off their  A Tribute to Kings tour last night in Boise, Idaho, debuting their full-album live version of Rush 's A Farewell to Kings .

After an opening eight-song set of their own biggest hits, the trio played Rush's acclaimed 1977 album in full and in original sequence. You can see video of Primus' entire A Farewell to Kings set below.

A Tribute to Kings was originally scheduled for 2020 before being  delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly before the trek, frontman  Les Claypool  posted an Instagram photo  of himself and Rush's Geddy Lee  holding their respective bass guitars. Claypool's caption, which seemingly previewed the tour, read, “Learning from the master.”

Upon announcing the jaunt, Claypool clarified to Rolling Stone that he received Lee's blessing. "I texted with him — I keep in touch with Geddy — just to make sure we weren’t trodding on something weird," he said. "So I checked in with him to see what he thought of it, and he was excited about the notion. ... He thought it was a great idea."

Watch Primus Perform Rush's 'A Farewell to Kings' and 'Xanadu'

The two bands have a long history, with Primus having opened for Rush in 1992. And for Claypool — who first saw the prog-rock band live during the 1978 Hemispheres tour — the tribute concept took on more weight following the 2020  death of Rush drummer Neil Peart .

“We’re trying to be as sensitive as we possibly can, so it doesn’t appear like we’re just jumping on the, ‘Hey, a superhero has died, let’s go out and do a tribute to him’ type thing," he said. "It’s about admiration for these amazing musicians and friends.”
