Answer. You just need to brief yourself in short, crisp, and clear. The Interviewers want to know how you can describe yourself.

If there is any medical issue onboard like nose running, Diarrhea, etc then they use 200 PPM for sensitization otherwise always 100 PPM.

The cleanliness of cruise ships is more important than ever, following the 2020 Coronavirus outbreak.

Who keeps the ships looking so spectacular? You guessed it – Housekeeping.

What is Housekeeping on a Cruise?

On a cruise, Housekeeping is a team of crew members who are responsible for cleaning the cabins, and public areas, disposing of waste, and sanitization of the ship.

Cruise ships carry thousands of people, so housekeepers are essential for ensuring the guests and crew stay healthy. 

This post will discuss the many roles of housekeeping personnel, the conditions they work under, and the average salary expectations that are associated with the job.

What Do Housekeeping Do on Cruise Ships?

Housekeeping personnel have many roles and responsibilities. Most are categorised as “Accommodation Crew” as a large percentage of the housekeeping team work cleaning guests’ cabins.

On a cruise, every cabin is cleaned at least once – sometimes twice a day.

Since the pandemic many cruise lines, like P&O, have reduced their cabin service and the rooms are only cleaned once, usually in the morning. You may see your room steward working in other parts of the ship in the evenings.

When I recently sailed on P&O’s Arvia, you had to put a magnetic sign on the door to say you were out and wanted your room cleaned.

If you don’t do that, they won’t come into your cabin to clean. Our Cabin Steward said he wasn’t allowed to enter unless you had put that sign on the door.

Housekeeping on a cruise ship is very similar to the housekeeping operations seen in most hotels.

Housekeeping personnel duties are primarily associated with cleaning and maintaining areas of the ship, to keep all passengers and crew members safe.

Some examples are listed below:

  • Steward / Stewardess. This is an entry-level position for job seekers looking to get experience on a cruise ship. Typically a steward or stewardess is tasked with cleaning assigned passenger cabins daily.
  • Public Area Attendant / Utility Cleaner. This is another entry-level position, in which personnel are tasked with cleaning public areas. Some duties may include vacuuming, cleaning upholstery, reporting equipment malfunctions, and ensuring overall cleanliness.
  • Laundry / Linen Keeper. This job includes assisting in the laundry facility and collecting dirty laundry, washing or dry cleaning garments for passengers or other cruise ship staff, and transferring the laundry to designated areas.
  • Butler. As a butler, a crew member is assigned to provide personalised services for guests. These services could be anything from serving food to running errands for specific guests.
  • Supervisor. With every position in housekeeping, there is always a supervisory role. Whether that be a Head Butler, Floor supervisor, or Chief housekeeper, each supervisory role is responsible for managing and directing staff in their department.

The roles listed above are just a few of the many positions in housekeeping that are available on cruise ships.

How Long are Housekeeping Contracts on a Cruise?

Depending on the company, cruise housekeeping contracts can last anywhere from 2 months to 12 months long. However, most contract lengths are between 6-9 months.

After each contract, you will receive approximately 60 days of vacation before your next assignment. Your daily work schedule while onboard will depend on your particular position, but you can expect to work seven days a week and anywhere between 10-13 hours per day. The crew of cruise ships work really hard , often for between ten to thirteen hours a day. When i was lucky enough to be invited on the Super Yacht Emerald Azzurra, I found that the ratio of crew to passengers was very high. As a consequence, our wonderful cabin steward had time to make up various senarios for our channel mascott Captain Hudson, whilst I was off the ship! Why Do Many Staff Have Short-Term Contracts?

Due to the fact that housekeepers are employed on separate short-term contracts, not one long contract, there are usually no healthcare benefits or other benefits that are usually associated with a full-time job in the U.S.A.

Cruise lines are able to do this because they don’t register their cruise ships in the U.S.

Flagging a cruise ship in another country is known as a “Flag of Convenience” and there are many other reasons why a cruise line would do this, such as taxes and marriage licenses.

The crew do get other unique benefits as per the terms and conditions of their contracts, and health care onboard the cruise ship is covered for staff.

One benefit that cruise ship members have is access to free food 24/7.

That means they are able to have any food they want whilst on their breaks and on their time off – and don’t have to spend any of their salary on food while on their contract.

Of course, many crew members do purchase additional food and snacks in port, but th ey don’t need to if they would rather save the money.

Other perks include free accommodation and travel. They get to live on the cruise ship and travel all over the world.

When the ship is docked, they are able to explore the ports, if they don’t have to work.

How Long Do Housekeeping Work Per Day?

Housekeeping personnel can expect to work 8-12 hour days on average.

On some days, such as turnaround day where guests disembark and embark, the housekeeping teams may be required to work longer hours.

Working on a cruise ship requires you to work more hours than in a typical full-time job.

Crew members are expected to work long hours on their shifts. Usually, they are anywhere between 6-20 hours long.

Not only that, but they also work anywhere from 5 to 7 days a week. In many cases, employees work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week.

How Much Do Housekeeping Personnel on Cruise Ships Get Paid?

In many situations, housekeeping is considered to be an entry-level job, so the salary can be lower than other ship employees.

According to ZipRecruiter , a popular job search engine, the average salary range for housekeeping personnel can be anywhere from $25,000 to $100,000.

This is a wide range, which includes management personnel, so the majority of housekeeping staff earn on the lower end, or even lower than this.

The statistic above includes Cabin Attendants, Butlers, Laundry Attendants, Supervisors, and all other positions.

Supervisors and other similar roles get paid more annually than the average attendant, because of their experience and responsibilities.

Working in the housekeeping team of a cruise ship has good progression opportunities. The majority of higher-level employees started in entry-level positions and worked their way up.

How Much Do Cabin Attendants Earn Working on a Cruise?

A cabin attendant’s salary usually ranges between $650 to $1,150 per month (that’s $7,800 to $13,800 a year).

A floor supervisor might take home $1,300 or more a month. These figures do not include gratuities that the crew sometimes receive on top.

Overall, housekeeping salaries aren’t very high. But gratuities make up a large portion of the crew’s take-home salary.

Gratuities for Housekeeping on a Cruise Ship

Most cruise ship crew members’ wages are low by Western standards, with many crew members relying on gratuities (tips) to support their families.

Many cruise ships add an “Auto-gratuity” charge, this was designed to make the process of tipping easier and it is automatically added onto your cruise account, rather than guests having to tip in cash. Of course, many people do also tip in cash.

Gratuities are charged per person per night and go towards paying the crew. This does range by cruise line, but typically it’s around $15-$25 per person, per night.

I took a cruise on Celebrity Edge. Celebrity charge a daily service charge, as well as gratuities on every drink, spa treatment and speciality meal.

Not all cruise lines charge an auto-gratuity and many are moving towards including this in the cruise price.

This move to include gratuities in the cruise price is particularly popular in Europe, where cruisers are less accustomed to tipping.

Why Do Cruise Lines Charge the Auto-Gratuities?

Auto-gratuities are a way of sharing gratuities among all crew members who don’t have front-facing roles, such as laundry attendants or kitchen staff.

This way, the gratuity is being shared out to all of these workers. In a traditional tipping system, these crew members are often missed.

Around 25% of the automatic gratuities go to the housekeeping teams.

There are some cruise line jobs that do not receive anything from the auto-gratuity charges.

When this is the case, cruise lines encourage guests to provide additional gratuities to these crew personnel – such as Butlers or Concierge staff.

Many cruise lines offer ways in which guests can pay auto-gratuities before their cruises, so they don’t end up with a large bill at the end of the holiday/vacation.

  • Maintenance and cleaning of public areas (such as spa, saunas, steam rooms, dining rooms, restrooms, lounges, etc.), open decks (such as restaurants, pools, whirlpools etc.), crew areas (such as crew restrooms, Medical Center, staff/officer cabins, etc.)  
  • Report all repairs to be made in assigned section, especially safety related issues and follow-up with management as necessary.  
  • Correct usage, storage and labelling of all chemicals and other applicable equipment.  
  • Use cleaning machines and cleaning equipment under the guidance of management, maintain and as designated by immediate supervisor.  
  • Coverage of stateroom services as required as part of ongoing training.  
  • Ensure staff/officer cabins and bathrooms are cleaned as per company’s standards.  
  • Ensure hallway/corridor and lockers are kept clean and tidy at all times.  
  • Ensure carpets in cabins where applicable and hallways/corridors are kept clean through daily spotting.

India calls on Iran to release 17 Indian crew members on board seized container ship

India has called on Iran to release 17 Indian crew members on board a container ship seized by Iran on Saturday. 

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that he spoke to his Iranian counterpart Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and "took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries."

Four Filipino seamen were also on board the ship, according to the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers.

The department said it was working with its government, the ship owner, and the operator to release the captured seafarers.

On Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized an Israeli-linked container ship in a helicopter operation near the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency IRNA reported. 

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said there were 25 crew members on board.

Japanese prime minister condemns Iran's attack on Israel

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday said he "strongly condemns" Iran's missile and drone attack on Israel.

"(The attack) further aggravates the current situation in the Middle East. We are deeply concerned and strongly condemn such an escalation," Kishida told reporters.

Kishida said Japan would continue diplomatic efforts to "prevent the situation from worsening and to calm the situation down," and "respond in cooperation with other countries."

Blinken calls British and German counterparts following Iran's attack on Israel

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with his counterparts from the United Kingdom and Germany on Sunday following Iran's attack on Israel, according to readouts from the State Department. 

All parties agreed "the importance of condemning Iran's attack in the strongest possible terms and preventing further escalation," the readout said. 

Blinken earlier held phone calls with his counterparts from Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia , in which he emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the Middle East and of "a coordinated diplomatic response."

US forces destroyed more than 80 attack drones from Iran and Yemen, Central Command says

US forces intercepted more than 80 one-way attack drones and at least six ballistic missiles from Iran and Yemen during its attack on Israel, according to a statement from the Central Command.

The operation included destroying a ballistic missile on its launcher vehicle and seven drones on the ground in Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, CENTCOM said. 

"Iran's continued unprecedented, malign, and reckless behavior endangers regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces," the statement added. 

Israeli and Iranian ambassadors trade accusations during UN Security Council session

Israel and Iran’s United Nations ambassadors condemned each other’s actions during Sunday’s UN Security Council emergency session called to address Iran’s attack on Israel.

Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said Iran "must be stopped before it drives the world to a point of no return, to a regional war that can escalate to a world war." Erdan accused Iran of seeking world domination and that its attack proved that Tehran "cares nothing, nothing for Islam or Muslims" before pulling out a tablet to show a video of Israel intercepting Iranian drones above Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Erdan called on the UN Security Council to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror organization.

“Action must be taken now, not for Israel's sake, not for the region's sake, but for the world's sake. Stop Iran today."

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said his country’s operation was "entirely in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations and recognized by international law."

Iravani said:

"This concluded action was necessary and proportionate," adding that the operation was “precise and only targeted military objectives” to reduce the potential of escalation and to prevent civilian harm. “Iran is never seeking to contribute to the spillover of the conflict in the region, nor does it to escalate or spread the tension to the entire region," he said.

Tehran’s attack had been anticipated since  a suspected Israeli strike  on an Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria earlier this month.

Iravani added Iran has “no intention of engaging in conflict with the US in the region” but warned Iran will use its “inherent right to respond proportionately” should the US initiate a military operation against “Iran, its citizens or its security.”

The hours-long Israeli war cabinet meeting ended Sunday night without a decision on how Israel will respond to Iran’s missile and drone attack , an Israeli official said.

The cabinet is determined to respond — but has yet to decide on the timing and scope and the official said the military has been tasked with coming up with additional options for a response.

Separately, a senior Biden administration official told reporters that an Israeli official told the United States that it's not looking to significantly escalate the showdown with Iran.

CNN analyst Barak Ravid said Israeli ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot advocated for swift action, but US President Joe Biden's phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led to a decision to delay the response until the next day. 

Here are the latest headlines:

  • Retaliation is over, Iran told US: Iran privately messaged the United States that its retaliation against Israel had concluded, echoing what Tehran said publicly, according to a senior administration official. Late Saturday, Iran said its attack on Israel is a response to Israel's strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, and "the matter can be deemed concluded." However, President Ebrahim Raisi said any “new aggression against the interests of the Iranian nation will be met with a heavier and regrettable response,” according to Iran’s state news channel IRIB. 
  • United Nations response: UN Secretary-General António Guterres  called for a de-escalation of violence after Iran’s attack. Guterres said the United Nations and member countries have a “shared responsibility” to engage “all parties concerned to prevent further escalation.” He also called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. “Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,” he said.
  • G7 and others: Amid a flurry of diplomatic activity in response to Iran's attack, the G7 nations said they would work together to "stabilize the situation" in the Middle East, according to a statement from Biden. Also, Jordan summoned Iran's ambassador in Amman on Sunday after it intercepted Iranian drones over the country.
  • Meanwhile in Gaza: As thousands of Palestinians were turned away from returning to their homes in northern Gaza on Sunday, a 5-year-old girl was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers, her mother said. Video showed a man carrying a 5-year-old girl named Sally Abu Laila, who was bleeding from her head, with people crowding around her in panic trying to cover her wound.

Also on Sunday:

  • Israel decided to lift its restrictions on large gatherings and to reopen schools on Monday.
  • The US Department of Homeland Security has not identified any “specific or credible threats” to the US since Iran attacked Israel.

Blinken calls Turkish, Egyptian, Jordanian and Saudi counterparts following Iran's attack 

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday spoke with his counterparts in Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia following Iran's attacks in Israel, according to readouts from the State Department. 

During his phone calls, Blinken emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the region and the importance of "a coordinated diplomatic response."

In his conversation with Jordan and Egypt, Blinken also underlined the significance of achieving an "enduring end to the crisis in Gaza."

Iran will be held responsible if any action is taken against the US or Israel, deputy ambassador warns

The United States warned Iran against taking any action against the US or Israel during the UN Security Council emergency session over Iran’s attack on Israel.

“Let me be clear, if Iran or its proxies take actions against the US or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible,” US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said Sunday.

The United States is “not seeking escalation, our actions have been purely defensive in nature,” adding that the “best way to prevent such escalation is an unambiguous condemnation of the council of Iran’s unprecedented large-scale attack,” he said.

The envoy reiterated US support for Israel and condemned Iran’s attack. “Iran’s intent was to cause significant damage and death in Israel,” Wood said.

Wood also said the UN Security Council had an “obligation to not let Iran’s actions go unanswered.”

“For far too long, Iran has flagrantly violated its international legal obligations,” he said before listing occasions Iran has violated UN Security Council resolutions and international law.

Wood accused Iran of being in a “broad sense complicit” of the October 7 attack on Israel by providing “significant funding and training for the military wing of Hamas.”

He added the US will explore "additional measures to hold Iran accountable here in the UN.”

500 Newfoundlanders wound up on the same cruise and it turned into a rocking kitchen party

A Celebrity Apex cruise to the Caribbean this month turned into a rocking Newfoundland kitchen party when hundreds of people from Canada's easternmost province happened to be booked on the same ship.

By a strange stroke of luck, 250 couples from the province, as well as kids and grandparents and even Newfoundlanders living in other parts of the world, were all on the same cruise, said Mark Hiscock, who sings and plays banjo and accordion in the popular Newfoundland-trad band, Shanneyganock.

There were we so many Newfoundlanders on board, the company roped off the main pool deck one night and hosted a party exclusively for passengers from the province, Hiscock said.

"You had to show your ID, that you were part of the Newfoundland contingent," the musician said in an interview. "I ran up and sang 'The Islander' and 'I'se the B'y' and everybody was going cracked."

About 3,000 people were on board when the ship set sail for the Caribbean on April 6. Pamela Pardy bought her ticket in November and soon began seeing social media posts from friends and friends of friends saying they, too, would be on the cruise.

Her travel agent then confirmed that 250 couples from the province, excluding kids and grandparents, would also be on board.

"Plus, when we go on the ship, there were all these people who don't live in Newfoundland but are from Newfoundland," she said in an interview. "So Newfoundlanders from around the world, literally, who were, by fluke, on this same cruise."

Pardy said she and her fiance have been on many fabulous cruises -- they often take two a year -- but sailing the seas with all those fellow Newfoundlanders was uniquely special. There was a connection between the passengers, and people felt free to strike up conversations with friends and strangers, Pardy said. She and her fiance would drape a Newfoundland and Labrador flag over the deck chairs as an invitation for anyone looking for a chat.

"Being in an elevator on a cruise ship is not usually a social event," Pardy said. "But when you're from Newfoundland, and you hear, 'Come on in, my ducky,' or 'What floor are you going to, my trout?' It was just so endearing."

The non-Newfoundland passengers were also included; the open, chatty atmosphere extended to them, and they were welcomed to witness what Pardy called "Newfoundland hospitality." She said she spoke with several people without connections to the province who were now interested in visiting.

On the last night of the voyage, many of the Newfoundlanders gathered again on the deck to take a group picture and sing the Ode to Newfoundland, the province's official anthem.

"You felt part of something bigger," Pardy said. "That's the only way that I can explain it."

She said she hopes Expedia Cruises will offer another cruise full of Newfoundlanders -- this time on purpose.
