Ontario County enhances historical tourism with augmented reality

Ontario County is calling on innovative minds to blend history with cutting-edge technology. The county, rich in historical landmarks and stories, is looking to adopt Augmented Reality (AR) to bring its blue historical markers, plaques, and statues to life. This initiative, spearheaded by Visit Finger Lakes, aims to provide an immersive experience, allowing visitors to not only read about historical events but to witness narrated stories unfold right before their eyes.

One highlighted example is the Ontario County Courthouse marker, which commemorates Susan B. Anthony’s trial for attempting to vote in the 1872 Presidential election—a time when only men were allowed to vote. This project seeks to narrate the fuller story of Anthony and other pivotal figures directly at the historical sites, making it a virtual museum experience through AR technology.

A Request For Proposals (RFP) has been issued as of February 1, inviting businesses with expertise in AR design, website design, and storytelling to contribute to this innovative project. Proposals are welcomed until February 15, with further details available on the Visit Finger Lakes website. This venture promises to revolutionize the way history is experienced in Ontario County, blending education with technology to engage both locals and tourists in a new and exciting way.

In the heart of New York’s scenic Finger Lakes region on the northern rim of Seneca Lake rests the historic, charming, and picturesque small city of Geneva.  A visit to Geneva should include sampling award-winning wines, learning about the area’s amazing history, basking in the romance of an 18th-century castle, and enjoying the eclectic food scene.

The area around Geneva was once a significant Seneca village known as Kanadaseaga. European-Americans began settling in the area in the late 18th century, and the village of Geneva was first incorporated in 1806.  Some say the city was named after Geneva, Switzerland because of the lakeside locale, others say it has Native American origins.

The city and town of Geneva have deep roots in farming and agriculture, which is reflected in the industries, institutions, and businesses that thrive here. The abundance of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and other locally-grown and produced foods has encouraged a home-grown culinary scene offering a variety of farm-to-table restaurants , wineries, craft breweries , specialty foods , and farmers' markets. Downtown Geneva’s Linden Street , which is closed to traffic on weekend nights in the warm weather, offers a variety of culinary options in a "uniquely urban" setting.

Seneca Lake, the deepest of the Finger Lakes at about 617 feet at its deepest point and the second-longest at about 38 miles, draws fishing and boating enthusiasts to Geneva. Geneva is also popular with golfers and a mecca for bicyclists due to the flat, rural roads, and little traffic. 

Geneva was named an All-America City in 2015, and for several years in a row, it has been on the Playful City USA list.

Geneva Fast Facts

History The village of Geneva was first incorporated in 1806, then again in 1812 and 1871. It eventually became the city of Geneva. The town of Geneva, which surrounds the city, was originally part of the town of Seneca, but formally became its own entity in 1872.

Size City of Geneva: 5.8 square miles (including 1.6 square miles of water) Town of Geneva: 19.1 square miles

Location With several miles of shoreline along Seneca Lake, the city and town of Geneva are in the southeastern corner of Ontario County about an hour away from the City of Rochester to the west and the City of Syracuse to the east. Routes 5 and 20 and Route 14 intersect in the city.

Terrain Geneva is mostly flat, surrounded by sweeping farmland. The elevation climbs gradually as you head away from Seneca Lake.

Key Industries

Agriculture: From family-run farms devoted to fruits, vegetables, dairy, and field crops, to research farms, the town of Geneva relies largely on agriculture.

Healthcare: Geneva General Hospital , run by Finger Lakes Health, is the largest employer.

Manufacturing: Zotos International manufactures professional hair care products; Guardian Glass makes float glass products; Vance Metal Fabricators makes large metal structures, including wine tanks for area wineries.

Food processing: Seneca Foods Corp. produces canned and bottled fruits and vegetables. The Technology Farm is an incubator for food and agriculture product development and innovation.

Higher education: Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Cornell's New York State Agricultural Experiment Station are based in Geneva. Finger Lakes Community College's Geneva Campus Center offers courses in becoming an EMT or Paramedic, criminal justice, human services, and other programs. FLCC's  Viticulture and Wine Center is also in Geneva.

Geneva City Schools serve students in the city and town of Geneva. St. Francis - St. Stephen's School offers Catholic education.

Key Landmarks and Attractions

Belhurst Castle: Historic landmark on Seneca Lake is a popular destination for weddings, honeymoons, and romantic getaways. The grounds include the tasting room for Belhurst Winery , Isabella Spa , and Edgar's Restaurant .

Geneva On The Lake: Built in 1914 to resemble an Italian villa, this AAA Four Diamond resort offers gourmet dining, manicured gardens, boat access, and classic gardens. 

Kashong Conservation Area: 83 acres of nature trails, with a picnic area and parking. Perfect for hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and dog walking (on leash). 

Seneca Lake State Park: Swim, hike, bike, boat, and picnic at this lakeside park, which includes a sprayground, disc golf course, and two marinas. 

Smith Opera House:  Built in 1894, The Smith is an architectural treasure that offers the perfect venue for taking in a live performance of music, dance, theater, film, and other community events. 

Hobart and William Smith Colleges: The Colleges, as they are known, are private liberal arts colleges with a scenic campus. 

New York State Agricultural Experiment Station: Part of Cornell University, the Ag Station conducts applied research to help build New York agriculture. 

Geneva Row Houses : Located along South Main Street, these historic row houses remind visitors of the architecture of Georgetown and Boston.

National Lake Trout Derby on Seneca Lake: Geneva is known as the “Lake Trout Capital of the World" because of its excellent fishing, and since 1964, the National Lake Trout Derby has been bringing anglers from across the United States and Canada on Memorial Day Weekend. 

Cruisin’ Night Classic Car Show: On a Friday night in mid-July, the streets of downtown Geneva are closed to traffic while hundreds of proud vintage car owners show off their wheels. The event includes live music, food, and drink. 

Rosé Soirée: Linden Street is closed to traffic and transformed into a wine garden dedicated to rosés. First Saturday night of June. 

Musselman Triathlon: Half tri and other races let you swim, bike, and run your best. Triathlon Business International calls the Musselman the ‘Best Small Event.’ Takes place over a weekend in mid-July.

Prince Edward County

Often called “The County” or “PEC”, Prince Edward County is one of Ontario’s most treasured holiday spots for its world-class wineries, sandy beaches and boutique accommodations.

Visitors flock to The County to explore small towns with antique shops, art galleries and farm-to-table fare. The 46-kilometre Millennium Trail stretches the length of The County, providing adventure for cyclists, hikers and birdwatchers.

Where is Prince Edward County?

Prince Edward County is located on the eastern shores of Lake Ontario, roughly halfway between Toronto and Ottawa. The County is most easily explored by car or motorcycle, although driving tours , bike tours  and even public transit  from the town of Belleville are available.

Beautiful Elora Streets; Ontario, Canada

Ontario is known for summer road trips and with warmer weather finally here it’s time to pick a small town and start exploring. The old mill in Elora, Canada and the Tooth of Time, Ontario

Elora is known as Ontario’s most beautiful village and it’s easy to see why upon arrival. You are welcomed with stunning view of the Elora Mill set against the riverfront and small town charm. The Elora Mill Hotel & Spa has been part of the community for over 175 years and towers above rushing falls and boasts stunning views. Elora is an hour and a half drive from downtown Toronto and located in the township of Centre Wellington along the banks of the Grand and Irvine River. The walkable downtown area has cute boutiques, restaurants, historical buildings, and galleries packed with original artwork. Art lovers can take a studio tour or even participate in a class and make their own masterpiece.

Nature lovers will be in their element at the famous Elora Gorge with 80-foot limestone cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and hiking trails like the Riverside trail for spectacular views of the water below. Be on the lookout for my favorite spot inside the Grand River Conservation Authority – Hole in the Rock – a massive rock you can literally walk right through to get to another trail. Or head to Elora Quarry (opens in June), a bucket list Ontario activity with an ‘old swimming hole’, rich forests, and sheer cliffs. Tickets to the Quarry must be purchased in advance online.

A trip to Tobermory guarantees you beautiful surroundings with sparkling fresh water, a gorgeous shoreline, and endless natural wonders. Located at the Bruce Peninsula’s northernmost point, it’s about a four-hour road trip from downtown Toronto.

Fathom Five National Marine Park, Tobermory, Ontario

Start your adventure at Flowerpot Island in Fathom Five National Marine Park. This beautiful island known for its amazing “flowerpot” rock pillars is accessible only by boat and also has historic caves and a lovely light station. Boat tours leave from Tobermory and if you start at Beachy Cove you can hike over to the flowerpots, explore the area, and have a picnic. Anther fun adventure to add to your Tobermory list is Big Tub Lighthouse. This magnificent 43-foot lighthouse at the entrance to Big Tub Harbour has a rich history and is a fun place to watch the Chi-Cheemaun ferry arriving and departing. When visiting Tobermory you can stay at cozy bed and breakfasts, cottages, hotels, or get back to nature at a wilderness campground. Starting on Victoria Day the Lion’s Head Farmers Market sells local produce on Saturday mornings and has live music at the beach.

Beautiful Huntsville is located in the heart of the Muskoka Region , known to locals as cottage country, and a dream warm weather destination. If you are looking for outdoor activities there are many to choose from including picture perfect walking trails, park picnics, and family friendly playgrounds. 3 attractions in Ontario ranked among most breathtaking landmarks in Canada

Three attractions in Ontario have been ranked among the top 10 most breathtaking in all of Canada, according to a recent report.

There's no arguing that the True North is home to some seriously awe-inspiring sights and experiences, but, when stacked against each other, which of Canada's landmarks really takes the cake?

According to a new analysis by Ontario Casinos , three attractions in Ontario — including one in Toronto — have landed within the list of the top ten most breathtaking Canadian landmarks.

The study looked at Google reviews from the country's most popular landmarks and calculated the percentage of reviews that included terms like 'breathtaking,' and 'wow,' ranking them by percentage.

Coming in at fourth place, Ottawa's Rideau Canal is a no-brainer. Home to the largest naturally-frozen skating rink each winter (well, most winters ,) and peaceful boat tours in the summer, the manmade water way is certainly a crowning jewel of the province.

Another gem from the nation's capital, Ottawa's National Gallery of Canada is caught in a three-way tie with New Brunswick's Reversing Falls and PEI's Green Gables.

Rounding out the list, Toronto's own ( recently re-opened ) Art Gallery of Ontario came in at tenth place.

Which of the country's landmarks managed to come in first place, you ask? None other than Alberta's Lake Louise, which has also been ranked the fourth most scenic lake in the world.

While the news of Lake Louise taking the cake comes as no surprise, I'm still shocked that a few of the country's greatest hits, like Niagara Falls or the McDonalds at Queen and Spadina didn't make it.

To each their own, I guess.

Enjoy Breakfast with a Side of Books in Picton

Picton is Prince Edward County’s largest community, and visitors can start their day with coffee and a sour cherry danish at Lily’s on Main Street. Head next door to browse beach reads at Books & Company , an independent bookseller for 30 years.

Find Feathered Friends

Located a short stroll away from Main Street in Picton, Birdhouse City at Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area is home to more than 100 handmade bird habitats, many replicating local landmarks.

The village of Bloomfield (population: 600) charms visitors with boutiques like Kokito , which sells artisan gifts such as MacAusland Canadian wool blankets, as well as galleries like The Love Loft , the studio of artist Jannet Haitas and home to handmade items by woman-owned, Canadian businesses.

For a sweet stop try Slickers , where cones are topped with homemade ice cream flavors like Campfire Cream (think: toasted marshmallows!).

Hunt for Antiques

Located along the Loyalist Parkway between Bloomfield and Wellington, The Carriage Barn carries a curated assortment of antique furniture and housewares.

Lunch Lakeside

Head to Wellington’s Drake Devonshire hotel, where seafood like steamed mussels and oysters on the half shell are served overlooking Lake Ontario.

Eat Your Veggies

A longtime agricultural hub, farmstands abound on the island. Visit Vicki’s Veggies for heirloom tomatoes, grown by eighth-generation farmer Vicki Emlaw. More than 50 stalls of locally grown produce and gifts pop up at the Wellington Farmers’ Market , the county’s largest, located at The Eddie , a 10-room hotel and historic barn set on 78 acres that also hosts outdoor theater productions.

Spot Barn Quilts

Follow the Barn Quilt Trails to more than 150 colorful squares located on buildings throughout PEC.

If two-wheel travel is more your style, cycle along the 28.5-mile Millennium Trail , which takes bikers across the island. Visitors can rent wheels from County Bike Rentals , which offers free pickups and drop-offs. Follow the route to local wineries like Trail Estate , which serves pinot noir beside the vines.

Savor Area Sips

Book a tasting at The County Cider Company in Waupoos, then enjoy their fruit-flavored hard ciders alongside wood-fired pizzas on the patio.

Hit the Beaches

Explore the dunes at Sandbanks Provincial Park , home to the world’s largest baymouth barrier dune formation. Cool off with a dip in the water along the park’s Outlet or Lakeshore Beaches.

Dine on a Farm, Then Rest Up

Dinner at family-run Littlejohn Farm near Picton includes a tour of the property, a cooking class, and a multicourse meal alfresco. The accommodations at Bloomfield-based Angéline’s range from a Victorian inn to the restored 1860s Babylon Log House (pictured). For a waterside sleep, book a cabin at Wander , which boasts its own beach club on West Lake.

The fair has been drawing Southern California to its fairgrounds in Pomona since 1922, but this is the third year that the fair has been held in the spring instead of the fall. It will run from Cinco de Mayo weekend through Memorial Day on Monday, May 27.

This year’s theme is “Stars, Stripes & Fun.”

Food vendors are prepared to supply the fun with corn dogs, turkey legs, funnel cake and lemonade, plus a few wild concoctions.

Charlie Boghosian, better known as Chicken Charlie, has come up with a hot honey funnel cake chicken sandwich.

Dominic Palmieri, also known as the Midway Gourmet, plans to serve Nashville hot chicken tots — double-dredged fried chicken breast on a bed of buttery garlic tater tots — at one of his stands, Biggy’s.

Food vendors throughout the fairgrounds will be offering value items at $9.50. Some are meals with 16-ounce drinks.

Value meal items also include corn dogs, slices of cheese pizza and more exotic treats such as deep-fried twinkies.

In addition to concessions, the Marketplace, a hall near the carnival games, will hold wine tastings with award-winning cheeses from the fair’s dairy competition as well as olive oil tastings. It also has a craft beer bar.

The fair will have four lounges where people can go for drinks and music: Plaza De Las Americas, in the Downtown Fairplex neighborhood; the Longboard Bar, near the grandstand; the Craft Beer Experience on Broadway near the clock tower; and the Marketplace. In addition, Top of the Park, on the fourth floor of the grandstand, will open 6-10 p.m. to concert ticket holders.

Special events will include a Mother’s Day brunch on May 12 and a whiskey tasting fundraiser on May 18 that includes a Dustin Lynch concert at 7:30 p.m.

LA County Fair

Where:  Fairplex, 1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona.

When: Friday, May 3 through May 27.

Hours: 5-11 p.m. opening day. After that 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, plus Memorial Day, May 27.

Tickets: $15-$25 for adults; $10-$12 for children 6-12 years and seniors 60-plus in advance. Tickets at the gate are $30, $15 for children and seniors.

Parking: $22 online, $25 at the gate. RV parking is $40.

Payment:  Parking, admission and concert box office payments are cashless. Advance online purchases are cheaper than gate prices.
