In this ultimate Qatar itinerary we will tell you what to do in this beautiful country whether you have 1 or 7 days in Doha. We cover the best things in Doha city, the desert and some off the beaten track recommendations from locals to make sure you have lots to do in this little country we once called home.

How to get around on this Qatar itinerary

Best Ways of Getting Around Doha / Getting Around Qatar

Best Ways of Getting Around Doha / Getting Around Qatar

The main ways to get around Doha are:

  • Careem or Uber.
  • Private Transportation

The cheapest ways to get around Doha are the Metro and buses. As a tourist I would recommend the Metro if you are looking for a cheap way to get around the city. The Metro is new and air conditioned which is definitely needed for those visiting Qatar in the Summer and is reliable. Buses really aren’t a great option for a tourist in Doha.

The taxis in Doha are called Karwas and are easily spotted by their colour and there is always a taxi rank at major tourist attractions. When I lived in Doha I would usually use the Karwa taxis instead of the app based taxis but that is my personal choice.

The other option is to hire a vehicle at the airport or at your hotel but the traffic in Doha can be challenging and may not suit everyone. If this is an option you wish to go down be sure to check the documentation you need before arrival.

Qatar Itinerary

Day 1 – museum, the dhow port and souq waqif .

If you only had one day in Doha and wanted to get a good idea about the city and country then this is the day I would chose to do.

The Museum of Islamic Art Doha Qatar - one of the best things to do in Doha at night and The Best Doha Tours and Day trips in Doha

The Museum of Islamic Art Doha Qatar – one of the best things to do in Doha at night and The Best Doha Tours and Day trips in Doha

I would start the day at either Museum of Islamic Art or the National Museum of Qatar which are both located on the Doha Corniche.

The Museum of Islamic Art is a beautiful building designed by I M Pei, which plays th symmetry and shadows and from a certain angle resembles a Qatari woman wearing a batoola (a traditional local face covering) inside explores the decorative arts relating to the Islamic world with items from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Highlight of the displays include carpet, pearls and armour.

Qatar itinerary

Qatar itinerary

This museum is probably more suited to those travelling without children as it is more suitable for an adult audience. Please note : the museum is closed and will be reopening in Autumn 2022 before the Qatar World Cup.

The other option would be to visit the National Museum of Qatar which tells you the history of the country from the nomadic and pearling days to the discovery of oil to contemporary life. There is also a gallery for children to explore which makes this a better option for those visiting Doha with kids . If you are interested in getting to know more about Qatar then this is definitely the museum for you.

Once you have finished at the museum we recommend taking a walk around the Museum of Islamic Art Park. It offers one of the best views of the Doha city skyline in my opinion and there is a cafe at the sealine which offers some of the best views in the whole of the city.

These museums are also one of the great free things to do in Qatar .

Once you have finished at the museums we recommend taking a stroll along the corniche to see the traditional Dhow port. Dhows are the traditional wooden boats of the area and boat rides are available if you are looking for something to do in Doha at night .

What to Buy in Qatar and Where to buy them

What to Buy in Qatar and Where to buy them

For your evening we recommend heading over to Souq Waqif, perhaps Doha’s most famous tourist attractions. Meaning Standing Market, the souq is a great place to go shopping especially for your Doha souvenirs . Here you can see spice souqs, the impressive gold souq, arts and crafts from the local area and grab a bite to eat. Our favourite place to eat in the Souq is Damasca One which has great balcony seating which gives you great views of the Souq and serves traditional Middle Eastern food. Alternatively we also love the Yemeni restaurant Bandar Aden which is the cheapest place you can eat in Souq Waqif.

Note : The Souq is definitely something to do in the evening as it is shut in the mornings and doesn’t really get going until the sun has gone down.

Day 2 – Mangroves, Al Khor and Katara

Qatar Itinerary

Qatar Itinerary

This day gets you out of Doha City and will require either your own vehicle or perhaps more preferable an organised tour.

This day requires an early start as you head out to the Mangroves at Al Khor.

Mangroves and Al Khor

The reason to head out of the city is to go and see some of Doha’s wildlife. The Al Khor Mangroves is famed for being a stop in the flamingo migration and they can usually be seen in January or February.

The best way to see them is via a kayaking tour. There are plenty of tours available such as XYZ.

Once you have visited the Mangroves, head back to your hotel to cool off and change before heading back out to Katara.

Katara

Katara is a cultural village in Qatar and is home to many of Qatar’s cultural festivals such as the Camel Festival usually held in February. It is a great place to wonder around with a museum and shops but also a great place to stop for dinner.

Day 3 – Visit the Desert

What to wear in Doha

The desert in Qatar

No visit to Qatar is complete without a visit to the desert.

Driving in the desert is an art form so even if you have a car we don’t recommend driving yourself. Instead use a local firm to do a half day or full day trip. These trips usually include a camel ride and dune bashing experience along with a BBQ meal.

Day 4  – Visit the Malls

The Middle East is a shopping paradise but even if shopping isn’t your thing the malls are still worth hitting during your stay. My favourite mall in Qatar is Villagio with its mock Venetian theme complete with gondola rides and a theme park but other favourites include Mall of Qatar and Festival City. There are lots of restaurants including some British and American Chains (Cheesecake Factory anyone?) and usually a theme park, soft play or ice rink to add extra entertainment.

Day 5  – Have a Beach Day

Where to Stay In Doha Qatar - Best Area to Stay in DOha

Where to Stay In Doha Qatar – Best Area to Stay in DOha

While Qatar might not rival the Caribbean or Maldives for pristine beaches many of the hotels will have a beach. If you hotel does not then we recommend buying a beach and pool day access at a hotel such as the Grand Hyatt or the Four Seasons. This is the ultimate in Qatar relaxation.

If you are visiting with kids then we recommend the Intercon (NOT the city one) as it has the most child friendly amenities and some great poolside restaurants.

Note: while Qatar has some public beaches  we recommend tourists using a hotel beach as these do not have the same dress code rules as their public counterparts.

Day 6 – Sheikh Faisal Museum and Camel Race Track

While Doha city has lots to see and do, it is worth getting out of the city again. The Sheikh Faisal Museum is one of my favourite museums in Qatar and has an eclectic mix of objects from American muscle cars to local artefacts which make it a great day out. As it is slightly out of the city it is worth pairing this trip with a visit to the Camel Race track located nearby.

Day 7  – Visit the Forts

While it may not have ancient monuments, Qatar does have some archaeological sites and some amazing forts.

The forts are a great way to find out some of this country’s history while seeing a different side to the Qatar landscape. For more information on how to get to the Qatar forts please click here.

For this itinerary, there is not one place that I recommend staying as it depends on your budget and what facilities you prefer your hotel to have. For a breakdown of areas and facilities check out our post on where to stay in Doha .

Things to Consider Before Travelling to Qatar

Things to consider when planning your Qatar itinerary that may affect opening hours and your ability to do outdoor activities. These are

  • Heat Summer gets VERY HOT. Be sure you are planning your day around the heat and take plenty of breaks
  • Ramadan Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting and during Ramadan many things will be closed during the day time and eating and drinking in public is forbidden, (although some five star hotels will have a hotel restaurant open but screened). Be sure to check when this is as if you are travelling to Doha during Ramadan it will greatly affect what you will be able to do.
  • Sports Day (usually the second Tuesday in February)
  • Eid al Adha and Eid al Fitr – as the Islamic calendar is lunar these holidays move year on year so be sure to check when they fall during your year of travel.
  • National Day – December 18th

A Guide to Visiting Qatar: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re planning a trip to Qatar, you may have certain expectations about what you’ll find there. Well, you may be in for some surprises. As you set foot in Qatar, a small peninsula in the Arabian Gulf, prepare to be swept away by the symbiosis of age-old traditions and modern flair.

Before you pack your bags and head off on your adventure, however, there are a few things you should know. In this article, we’ll cover key tips to help you make the most of your time in Qatar.

1. The Best Time to Visit Qatar

If you’re planning a dreamy trip to Qatar, the best time to go is during the cooler winter months from November to March. You’ll love the perfect daytime temperatures of 23°C to 30°C (73°F to 85°F), while the evenings are just as pleasant, ranging from 15°C to 20°C (58°F to 71°F).

This is an ideal time of the year to explore Qatar ‘s natural beauty, soak up the sun on a beach holiday, and get lost in Doha’s stunning architecture and museums. Plus, with the great weather, you can take advantage of thrilling water sports like kitesurfing, diving in the Arabian Gulf , relaxing on the beach, going on a desert safari, or birdwatching in the picturesque Al Thakira mangroves.

Place Vendôme, a lavish shopping destination in Lusail, Qatar

If you do find yourself in Qatar during the summer heat, don’t worry! Besides shopping destinations such as Villaggio Mall and the more recently opened Place Vendôme , Qatar’s world-class museums (which we’ll describe momentarily) offer a cool respite from the sun. And if you really want to be outside during the summer, you can head to open-air places like Galeries Lafayette , Souq Waqif, and Al Gharrafa Park, where air-conditioned spaces offer a pleasant retreat from the heat.

2. Things to Do in Qatar

A. if you’re into the arts and culture.

Qatar is a treasure trove for visitors who appreciate the finer things in life. With its rich cultural offerings, you’ll find yourself immersed in world-renowned art museums and the vibrant Katara Cultural Village , a haven for creatives that boasts museums, theaters, and artist studios.

As you explore Doha, be sure to visit the iconic Museum of Islamic Art , a masterpiece by architect I. M. Pei, where you’ll discover 14 centuries of Islamic art from three continents, not to mention some captivating contemporary exhibitions and international collaborations.

Museum of Islamic Art

A 5-minute drive away from the Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum of Qatar , designed by renowned French architect Jean Nouvel, will leave you speechless with its desert rose-inspired architecture as you dive deep into Qatar’s history and culture through interactive, immersive exhibitions.

b. If you’re into architecture

Architecture aficionados will love the treasures of Qatar’s groundbreaking, sky-puncturing structures. Picture yourself standing beneath the Tornado Tower, its hourglass silhouette reaching toward the sky. Within its 52 floors, this masterpiece houses a bank, a restaurant, and luxury office spaces, each vying for your attention.

The Burj Doha or Doha Tower in Qatar

Your journey continues as you find yourself drawn to the heart of the West Bay business district, where the Burj Doha, also known as Doha Tower, stands tall. The brainchild of Jean Nouvel—yes, the same architect who designed the National Museum—this 238-meter (780-foot) skyscraper is an ode to his creative genius. But the architectural marvels don’t end there.

Doha Skyline, Qatar

Be sure to venture to the Abdullah Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Center, also known simply as Fanar , where you’ll be enveloped in a cultural haven. Displays on Islam, guided tours, and Arabic language classes await you near the bustling Souq Waqif. As you delve deeper into the past, explore historic Al Koot Fort, a museum repurposed from its past lives as a police station and jail that now showcases Qatari handicrafts, paintings, and photos.

Next, gasp in awe at the Zig Zag Towers , the world’s tallest residential zigzag twin towers, a testament to the ingenuity of the architects and a spectacle for visitors.

Finally, wander through the futuristic streets of Msheireb Downtown, where the past and the present collide in harmony. A sustainable district where traditional Qatari design melds with green technology, this urban marvel boasts the highest concentration of LEED-certified buildings in the world. If you’re wondering what to do in Msheireb , exploring its galleries and museums, its numerous cafes, restaurants and hip stores.

In Qatar, every step you take is a step into a world where architectural wonders abound.

c. If you’re into adventure

As you set foot in Qatar, a land of contrasts, prepare for a whirlwind of adventure that will sweep you off your feet. Let the enchanting landscapes captivate you as the sea reaches out to embrace the desert, the majestic Mesaieed dunes beckoning you to explore their secrets. A dip in the tranquil Inland Sea awaits, offering a soothing reprieve from your arid surroundings.

On a journey to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khor Al-Adaid , you will see the desert dunes entwine with the sea in an eternal dance. Exhilaration takes center stage as you conquer the sands in a dune buggy rental, try ‘dune bashing’ (a form of off-roading), head out on 4WD escapades, or simply hike or play in the tall dunes.

As you return to civilization, immerse yourself in Qatar’s rich maritime heritage with a serene boat ride on a traditional Qatari fishing vessel, known as a dhow. Glide through the Corniche harbor to witness firsthand the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.

If you’re eager for more adventure, you can harness the power of the wind as you kite-surf along the Qatar coastline or make a splash on a jet ski. The cool waters of the Arabian Gulf offer respite from the desert heat.

The mangroves in Al Thakira in Qatar

Nature’s wonders continue to unfold before you as you navigate the unique ecosystem of Al Thakira Mangroves in a kayak, a world apart from the desert landscapes you’ve explored.

Finally, in a crescendo of adrenaline, you can take to the skies, skydiving high above Doha and the surrounding desert, your heart racing with the thrill of freefall as the world below stretches out before you.

d. If you’re with your family

As you embark on your family-oriented Qatari adventure, your first stop could be the thrilling Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park , where aquatic and land-based activities captivate the entire family. This place is one of the largest theme parks in the Middle East, with more than 50 rides and 18 attractions. Let your little ones splash around in the pools while older children indulge in laser tag, canyoning, and go-karting.

Next, the exhilarating Quest Theme Park awaits with more than 30 rides and attractions. Marvel at the EpiQ Coaster, the world’s tallest indoor rollercoaster, and plunge into immersive 3D experiences, laser tag, and carnival games.

For an educational yet entertaining experience, don’t miss OliOli , an interactive children’s play museum located in Katara Cultural Village. This captivating and lively indoor play space was created by parents who are enthusiastic about nurturing playfulness and harnessing the potential of creativity.

Haven’t had enough? The Museum of Illusions offers a spellbinding indoor experience with interactive illusions and displays that ignite the imagination.

Finally, stroll through the Pearl-Qatar’s Mediterranean-style marina where world-class restaurants and premium retail offerings will tempt your senses.

You can stop by Megapolis , a family entertainment hub in the Pearl’s Qanat Quartier, and indulge in bowling, car racing simulators, golf simulators, and arcade games. For younger children, Minipolis offers rock wall climbing, inflatable games, and a Lego area, ensuring unforgettable memories for the whole family.

e. If you just want to relax

After exploring the bustling city, it’s time to unwind and relax. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of options to soothe your soul and rejuvenate your body.

One of the best ways to relax is to take a leisurely stroll through one of the city’s parks. The Aspire Park in the middle of Doha boasts the largest lake of the city and is a great place for a relaxing stroll. Alternatively, the Hotel Park in West Bay is a lush green oasis with spectacular skyline views, fountains, and walkways.

If you’re in the mood for a more luxurious experience, the Ali Messila Spa , The Spa: Al Jasra Boutique Hotel , and Jaula Spa and Club at Grand Hyatt Doha each offer an array of treatments to help you unwind. If you’re looking for a beach club experience, Sharq Village is one of the best, especially for families . With private villa rentals and more than 250 treatments, it’s the largest spa in Doha. Meanwhile, The Diplomatic Club offers family-friendly fun with pools, water activities, and kid-friendly dining options. Check the beach club rules for public access.

Finally, the Doha Corniche is a crescent-shaped promenade on the bay that offers marvelous skyline views, which you can admire on a walk from the Sheraton Hotel park to the Museum of Islamic Art park.

3. Where to Eat in Qatar

Whatever your culinary preferences, Qatar has plenty of delightful options to satisfy your cravings. If you’re in the mood for casual Syrian fare, head to Damasca One , where you can enjoy outdoor dining at the vibrant Souq Waqif .

For a more upscale experience, try Parisa , an elegant Persian restaurant that will transport you to another world.

If you’re craving Latin American cuisine, you can’t go wrong with Curiosa at the Four Seasons, La Mar , or SushiSamba (Japanese-South American fusion cuisine).

Looking for the newest hotspots? Check out Alba at Raffles or Masala Library at the Fairmont. For dining with an Asian flair, Spice Market at W Doha Hotel offers Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine. Or if you want to indulge in some Wagyu beef and contemporary desserts, CUT by Wolfgang Puck is the place for you. Finally, Hakkasan is a Michelin-starred restaurant offering Cantonese cuisine in Doha.

Now that you’ve got a flavor of what to expect on the dining scene, you may wonder what to drink after your meal. If you want to feel truly local, look no further than the country’s beloved drink, karak tea (also known as karak chai). Introduced in the 1950s by Indian and Pakistani expats, this tea is boiled with milk, sugar, and spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, or ginger. To enjoy it in the most authentic way, head to Doha’s local cafes or chai houses, where you’ll witness men playing dominoes while sipping on this beloved beverage. Not only is it a cultural experience, but it won’t break the bank, with prices typically no more than 4 QR (about $1 US) per cup. So, take a break from your sightseeing and indulge in the rich flavors of karak tea while soaking up the lively atmosphere of Qatar’s cafes.

4. Where to Stay in Qatar

If you’re planning a trip to Qatar, we recommend basing yourself in Doha for the duration of your stay.

For a traditional Qatari experience as well as for the location, it’s hard to beat the Souq Waqif/Msheireb district. This area boasts traditional architecture, a vibrant atmosphere, and proximity to attractions such as the Museum of Islamic Art. A standout hotel in this area is the Al Najada Doha Hotel by Tivoli, which offers a blend of traditional and modern design, a rooftop infinity pool, and an extensive selection of dining options. An alternative at a slightly cheaper rate – and still under the Tivoli brand – is Najd Boutique Hotel . It is renowned for its luminous spaces adorned with traditional Arabic designs and rich decorative details in its rooms. Plus, it’s located right next to Souq Waqif metro station!

Alternatively, there are many budget-friendly options in the area or nearby.

If you prefer a bustling business district, West Bay is the place. This area is known for its high-rise buildings and landscaped parks, and it’s convenient for both business and leisure travelers. The JW Marriott Marquis City Centre and The Ritz-Carlton, Doha are two excellent hotels in West Bay that offer panoramic views of the city skyline.

For a luxurious island escape, consider staying on Banana Island. This secluded, family-friendly island is accessible only by boat or helicopter. The Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara is a top hotel on the island, offering luxury villas and suites with private pools, a marina, and a nine-hole golf course. The hotel’s spa is exceptional, too, featuring a wide range of treatments and facilities, including a Turkish hammam and an hydrotherapy pool. It’s a great place for families to stay in Qatar .

Another luxurious option is The Pearl, an island district that boasts high-end residential areas, shops, and restaurants as well as a marina and a beach club. The Marsa Malaz Kempinski on Pearl Island has a palatial design inspired by Venetian palazzos, a world-class spa, and dining options with sea views.

5. The Best Ways to Get Around

If you’re planning a trip to Qatar and looking for the best ways to get around, there are a number of options available to you. One of the most technologically advanced and affordable ways to travel is via the Doha Metro. With three lines and modern, dedicated stations, major attractions are easily accessible. The one-way fare is only 2 QAR (0.55 US), and during special events, operating hours are extended. You can purchase a travel card for 10 QAR ($2.75 US) for standard seating or 100 QAR ($27 US) for Gold Club premium seating.

Directions to metro and taxis at Hamad International Airport

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Karwa taxis and Uber are also clean, affordable, and convenient.

For those who prefer eco-friendly options that add a dose of excitement and exercise, there are dedicated cycling areas such as Doha Corniche and Al Bidda Park, where bike rentals are available. Electric scooters can also be rented from Loop Mobility and Falcon Ride .

Bikes and electric scooters rental

Finally, you can rent a vehicle, which is an especially good choice if you plan to explore remote attractions. However, this requires confidence in your driving ability in a foreign country and an understanding of local laws. You will also need an international driving license.

6. Local Customs: Dos and Don’ts

When traveling to Qatar, it’s important to respect the local culture and certain customs. Below are some guidelines you need to be mindful of.

a. How to dress

When traveling to Qatar, it is important to respect the local culture, including the dress code. It is usually recommended to wear long and loose-fitting clothes and cover your shoulders and knees to conform to the expectations of tourists in a Muslim country. However, in hotels and certain areas such as The Pearl, the atmosphere tends to be more relaxed, allowing for greater flexibility in your dress code.

The marina walkway at The Pearl Qatar

While the dress in Doha is more casual than elsewhere in the Middle East, it is still important to be modest. Keep your shoulders and knees covered when visiting religious sites, museums, souks, government buildings, healthcare facilities, and shopping centers. Women should wear a headscarf when entering mosques.

Bathing suits are only permitted in hotel pool areas or on private beaches. To ensure comfort during the summer months, it’s recommended to wear breathable fabrics such as linen, chambray, or cotton, as they help you stay cool and comfortable in the heat, while avoiding heat-retaining materials like rubber, leather, polyester, acrylic, and denim.

At the airport, dress codes are less strict, but wearing clothing that covers most of the body is still recommended for comfort.

b. Can you drink alcohol in Qatar?

While non-Muslims can buy alcohol in designated QDC (Qatar Distribution Company) shops, it is strictly forbidden to drink alcohol in public.

As a tourist, you can enjoy alcohol in bars and restaurants at hotels and tourist complexes, but it’s essential to remember that excessive drinking is not well-received. It’s also prohibited to drink alcohol in residential areas or public areas outside of authorized hotels and restaurants.

c. Can you take photos of locals in Qatar?

While exploring Qatar, just as you’d expect in many other countries, keep in mind that local people might not appreciate being photographed without their consent—especially women. But who knows? If you do ask for permission to take a photo, it could lead to a meaningful conversation and a deeper understanding of Qatari culture.

d. What is it like to travel as a couple in Qatar?

While hand-holding is acceptable, public displays of affection such as kissing, hugging, and cuddling are prohibited. Gender segregation is prevalent in public spaces, with separate queues and waiting areas for men and women. Women-only beaches and parks have designated “ladies’ days,” and it’s essential to follow rules and signs for “ladies only” or “women only” spaces.

e. Should you tip in restaurants in Qatar?

While there are no rigid regulations regarding gratuities, tourists are expected to tip in Doha, particularly if they are satisfied with the service provided. In Qatar, it’s considered courteous to offer a small gratuity to waiters and other staff members. A tip of 10-15 percent is generally appropriate for restaurants, cafes, and bars, while a gratuity of 5-10 QAR ($1.37-$2.75 US) is expected for taxi drivers and gas station attendants.

f. When is the weekend in Qatar?

In Qatar, the weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, with the workweek running from Sunday to Thursday. On Fridays, many establishments close temporarily between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for congregational prayers, including the metro in Doha, which only runs from 2 p.m. to midnight on Fridays.

Similarly, restaurants, cafes, and museums don’t open until 1 or 2 p.m. on Fridays, and two of the city’s most popular attractions, the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif, are closed on Friday mornings. On Saturdays, these places generally operate with regular hours. If you plan to visit Qatar on a Friday, be sure to structure your itinerary around these restricted hours and plan accordingly.

1. how long should you stay in qatar.

For a brief layover on a trip that includes stops in other countries, two to three days is enough time to see the main attractions in Doha, such as the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif, and the Corniche. Even if you have a short stopover of fewer than 24 hours, though, you can still enjoy the city’s world-class museums, impressive malls, and dazzling skyline.

If you’re flying with Qatar Airways and plan to stay one to four nights, be sure to check out their stopover deals for a discounted stay in four- or five-star hotels. For less than 20 euros a night, you can enjoy a mini-stay in Qatar and take advantage of a free transit visa included with your booking. With these attractive transit deals, you can easily extend your layover and experience the best of Qatar without any hassle.

2. What kind of visa do you need to visit Qatar?

Qatar offers one of the most flexible entry systems in the Middle East. More than 95 countries, including most European countries, can enter Qatar visa-free for a stay of up to 90 days! For travelers requiring a visa, a four-day transit visa is available to all nationalities. Of course, it is recommended to check the current entry requirements before traveling.

3. Is Qatar safe for solo female travelers?

Qatar is safe for tourists . In fact, it has emerged as one of the safest countries in the world, with a low crime rate and a welcoming atmosphere. In particular, solo female travelers can feel safe and secure while exploring the country’s diverse attractions, from world-class museums and luxurious shopping centers to stunning desert landscapes and traditional souks.

Qatar is the wealthiest country in the world – thanks to oil production – and the wealth is imminent in excellent infrastructure.

There are many things to see and do in Doha.

While most of them are concentrated in and around the Qatar capital of Doha, you can also find attractions in the desert and around the Zekreet peninsula.

In spite of that, Qatar is a small country and you can easily see it in 3 to 5 days. Here are our recommendations for planning your trip to Doha, Qatar with our detailed Qatar itinerary.

“Qatar does not have much history, it’s a new emirate. So I couldn’t draw on the history of the country; its history is really just being a desert. But I thought the one thing I must learn about for this project is the Islamic faith. So I read about Islam and Islamic architecture, and the more I studied the more I realized where the best Islamic buildings were.” – I M Pei, the architect of the Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha

Qatar Travel FAQs

Is qatar safe to visit.

Qatar is extremely safe to visit. It has a very low level of crime and violence and is, in fact, the 16th safest country in the world. It is quite safe for everybody including families, couples, solo men and women, as well as business travelers.

Qatar is also politically stable. Visitors should follow the usual travel precautions of respecting local customs, not bringing alcohol or pork products, not wandering alone at night, and being aware of their surroundings.

Located in the Middle East, Qatar is an Islamic country and follows Sharia laws. Qatar is also conservative.

Visitors must obey local laws and customs: alcohol is prohibited except in certain 5-star expat hotels and bars where it is served at very expensive rates.

Being drunk in public is a legal offense, for which you can be jailed. Men and women both should both dress conservatively but women are not required to cover their head.

Visitors should not criticize the ruling family or the emir and keep conversations limited to non-controversial subjects.

When is the best time to visit Qatar?

Qatar is located in the Middle East. Most of the country is a dry and arid desert. As a result, it gets very hot during the summer. From June to September, it is the low season.

The average temperature is above 40 C or 100 F. There is minimal rainfall during summer. If you do visit during the summer, we recommend drinking lots of water and not spending a lot of time outdoors at noon to avoid the extreme heat.

April to May in spring and October to November in fall is a great time to visit because of mild heat during the day and cool winds at night.

The best time to visit is however from December to March when day time temperature is pleasant.

It can, however, get pretty cold at night in the desert and we recommend dressing in layers and wearing a jacket or sweater for night time outdoor activities like the dhow cruise or camping in the desert.

Where to stay in Qatar?

We recommend basing yourself in Doha for the duration of your stay in Qatar.

You can easily see the attractions located outside of Doha via day trips by renting or hiring a car with a driver.

The best place to stay in Doha is easily inside the Souq waqif boutique hotels.

The Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels is a collection of 9 designer properties located inside the Souq. Each of these hotels has a variety of amenities and guests at one can avail of the amenities at other hotels as well.

But the best thing about Souq Waqif hotels is their location: you have the souqs shops, restaurants, and vibrant atmosphere at your doorstep.

Another option is to stay in close vicinity to Souq Waqif. There are a number of hotels in the area from where you can walk to the Souq and have a budget-friendly stay.

Alternatively, you can also stay along the Corniche where many of the international hotel brands are located.

Epic Qatar Itinerary for families, couples, and solo travelers

Day 1: museum of islamic arts, katara cultural village, souq waqif.

Start your day by seeing the highlights of Doha. Visit the famous Museum of Islamic Arts and see the Katara Cultural Village. End the day by shopping and dining in Qatar’s famed Souq Waqif.

Museum of Islamic Arts

The Museum of Islamic Arts (MIA) is one of Doha’s top tourist attractions. Designed by the renowned architect I M Pei of Louvre pyramid fame, the museum building is a beautiful work of art.

The museum is built on its own reclaimed piece of land on the Doha Bay and visitors have a beautiful view of the Doha skyline from the museum campus.

The museum is a modern take on the Islamic mosque style of architecture around the world and blends in the ancient Qatari style prominently seen in Souqs and elsewhere in the city.

The building’s upper air vents are designed to resemble a veiled Qatari woman.

The collection of Islamic Arts inside the museum is vast, diverse, and stunning. Museum has exhibits from all over the world including Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

You will find paintings, Islamic calligraphy, ancient Qurans, jewelry, ceramics, magnetic compasses, globes, jewelry, textiles, and a variety of everyday objects from ancient times.

These articles were created under Islamic rulers and show intricate Islamic patterns and motifs.

Also well represented are architectural elements including doors, windows, tiles, columns, wall panels, etc that are constructed and decorated in the Islamic style of architecture.

The museum interior is also spectacular with 5 storied grand windows that offer a memorable view of the Doha skyline across the water – my favorite view in all of Qatar!

We recommend dining in the museum café to take in this view. We ate delicious date cheesecake at the cafe and did not feel like leaving.

The museum garden and the outside courtyard of the building are also worth exploring. You should ideally keep aside at least 2 to 3 hours to explore the museum and its surroundings. Entrance to MIA is free and it is closed on Friday.

Katara Cultural Village

Katara Village is located between the West Bay skyline and the Pearl. Katara was the ancient name of Qatar and the complex is named after that.

The building design and architecture in Katara reflects Qatar’s heritage. The area is open 24/7 and holds many events including the Doha Film Festival.

We recommend walking in Katara and admiring the architecture, especially the Katara mosque, viewing art galleries, and spending time on the beach.

You can also see many local artists, check out the amphitheater, and the maritime museum. Katara also has many fine-dining restaurants including Middle Eastern, Indian, Italian, and many more.

Souq Waqif is located across the MIA. The name Souq Waqif literally means a standing market. This is an ancient Qatari market that has been recently restored and has become Doha’s premier tourist attraction.

Inside you will find police patrolling on horses and porters carrying purchases on wheelbarrows – it’s like walking back in time. The market has narrow alleys and shops selling a variety of goods from souvenirs, antiques, perfumes, spices, and household goods.

The Souq is an excellent place to shop. We spent a lot of time in Souq Waqif during our time in Qatar and loved exploring the market. To know more about the market, read our post on 22 Epic things to do in Souq Waqif .

The main thoroughfare of Souq Waqif is full of restaurants – this is a great area to dine in Qatar. You will find restaurants for all budgets and cuisines – Qatari, Syrian, Lebanese, Moroccan, Iraqi, and even Italian.

You can buy fava beans, chestnuts, and pasta from food carts and eat Turkish style ice cream. This main street also has money changers and souvenir shops. You can people-watch here for hours and be happy.

However, we also recommend exploring beyond Main Street and in the alleys where the locals shop. There you will find household goods, apparel, and even a gold souq.

The Souq also has a camel pen and horse stables – our son loved seeing the animals. The Souq also has a separate area known as the Pet Souq where you can find all sorts of pet animals including birds, rabbits, tortoises, and aquatic animals.

The Falcon Souq located next to Souq Waqif is dedicated to selling falcons and falconry supplies. This is a great place to understand the Qatari tradition of falconry. If visiting the Falcon Souq, read our article on everything you need to know about the falcon souq .

Here’s a tip: many of the porters, salesmen, taxi drivers, and other workers in Souq Waqif are from the Indian subcontinent and especially India – if you know Hindi (one of the Indian languages) – you can have a much better conversation with them in Hindi than English.

We got better deals when bargaining in Souq Waqif simply because we spoke the language and were able to pet the Arabian horses in the stables near the Falcon Souq.

Day 2: Sheikh Faisal Al Thani Museum, Doha Corniche, Dhow cruise

Visit the unique Sheikh Faisal Al Thani museum and see the camel races at the nearby Al-Shahaniya racetrack. End the day by walking along the Corniche, exploring West Bay skyline and taking a dhow cruise.

Sheikh Faisal Al Thani museum

This privately owned museum was opened by Sheikh Faisal Al Thani and showcases his private collection.

The museum is built in an ancient Qatari fort and has exhibits ranging from Islamic artwork, textiles, manuscripts, coins from various time periods, vintage cars, bikes, pearling equipment, wooden dhows, and other artifacts.

You will also find an entire Syrian house inside the museum. The Sheikh collected the items over 50 years.

The museum also has plans for a separate car museum and carpet exhibit area in the future.

The car collection will have over 600 vintage and classic cars, motorbikes,  guns, artillery, and more while the carpet collection will feature hand-woven rugs with Islamic motifs.

You can visit the museum on your own or request a special guided tour with an English-speaking guide. We recommend spending about 2 hours viewing the collection.

The museum is located about an hour out of Doha, so we suggest either driving there or keeping your taxi waiting while you see the collection, as it’s hard to find a return taxi.

Al Shahaniya Racetrack

Watching the camel races at Al Shahaniya Racetrack is one of the most unique things to do while in Qatar. The Al Shahaniya Racetrack is located near the Al Thani museums and you can do both in one morning.

The best time to visit the racetrack for a chance to see the camel races is on Friday during the winter months (November – February), when there are national and international tournaments being held. Races are also often held every day during the season.

Camel racing is one of the most expensive sports in the world and also the most unique. Camels are usually handled by robot jockeys. It is fascinating to see the camels and their kid-sized jockeys at work.

The robotic jockeys are remote-controlled; their operators drive cars around the track and control operations as needed.

Watching the races is a free and fun activity. If you can’t visit during the race season, then try visiting in the morning around 9 am when the camels are exercised every day.

The Corniche

The Doha Corniche is the city’s waterfront promenade along the Doha Bay. It begins at the Museum of Islamic Arts and continues for over seven kilometers.

Along the promenade, you will find beautifully landscaped walking paths, sculptures and monuments, and public gardens. At the other end, you will find the iconic Sheraton hotel with its pyramid shape.

From the Corniche, you can see excellent views of the Doha West Bay business district skyline – this is one of the best places to photograph the Doha skyline.

Many of Doha’s premier landmarks are located along the Corniche. The Corniche is connected by an underground walkway to Souq Waqif.

Some of the popular sculptures along the Corniche include the Pearl Monument (devoted to Qatar’s pearling history), murals, Richard Serra’s 7 sculptures near the MIA, and Orry – the mascot of the Asian Games in 2006.

This is a great place to people watch; you will be able to see Qatari families having picnics and playing with their children along the Corniche. We recommend walking along the Corniche at sunset and enjoying the spectacular views.

If you walk towards the far end of the Corniche, near the West Bay skyline, you will be able to see the beautiful teapot sculpture. We loved this intricate marble sculpture and had a nice picnic beneath its shade.

Dhow Cruise

End your day with a dhow cruise on the Doha Bay. Many traditional wooden dhows line up along the promenade near the Museum of Islamic Arts end of the Corniche.

The boats can take you on a sail around the bay and you can see Doha city from the water. The views of the skyline from the water are beautiful and the wooden dhow cruise is a very romantic experience.

The sunset cruise is one of the best – Doha’s skyscrapers are ablaze with the glow of the setting sun and the wooden dhow boats have their twinkling lights on while some others also have music to compliment the atmosphere.

You can also opt for a dinner cruise aboard the dhow boat.

Day 3: Al Thakira Mangroves, Barzan Towers, Villagio Mall, Aspire Park

Kayak the mangroves of Al Thakira. View the Barzan Towers in Doha. End the day by shopping in Villagio Mall and spending time in Aspire Park while taking in views of the Aspire Tower.

Al Thakira mangroves

If you thought Qatar was all about the desert, you are in for a surprise. Al Thakira mangroves located north of Al Khor is a vast expanse of greenery.

At Al Thakira, you will find lots of migrating birds including flamingos, herons, fish, crabs, and more. Al Thakira has lush green mangrove forests and is an excellent respite from the starkness of the desert.

The best way to explore the mangroves and wildlife at Al Thakira is via a guided kayak tour.

The kayaking trips are usually about an hour to 90 mins long and experienced guides will guide you through the mangrove forests. Many tour operators can organize this half-day kayak excursion for you.

Barzan Towers

An off-the-beaten-path destination in Qatar, you won’t find many other tourists near the Barzan Towers. The Barzan Towers are historic watchtowers in Qatar’s northern desert.

Built in the late 19th century, these served the dual purposes of keeping watch over the enemy in the desert and observing the night sky. The towers are architecturally minimalist and striking and blend in the desert environment.

The buildings have been restored in 2003 and are in great condition. Inside the tower complex, you will find a small mosque and visitor center but apart from that, there is not much to see.

The towers make for striking photographs and are a great way to spend a few hours in the desert. The Umm Salal Fort is also located close to the watchtowers but is closed to visitors.

Villagio Mall

After your trip to the mangroves and the desert watchtowers, spend the rest of your day in the Aspire Zone.

Villagio Mall located in the Aspire Zone has over 200 branded stores and is a great place to shop, dine, and people-watch. Apart from shopping, the Villagio Mall is most famous for its Italian inspiration and indoor canals with gondolas, reminiscent of Venice.

With its lit up blue sky ceiling interior, it reminded us of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Inside the Villagio Mall, you will also find other attractions including the food court, ice hockey rink, indoor playground, cinema, and bowling alleys.

Aspire Park and Aspire Tower

After spending time at the Villagio Mall, visit the famous Aspire Tower and Aspire Park. The Aspire Tower is also known as the Torch, Doha and is one of the most photographed buildings in the city for its spiral architecture.

The Aspire Tower is currently the tallest building in Doha and looks exceptionally beautiful when lit up at night.

Aspire Park located next to the Aspire Tower in the Aspire Zone is Doha’s largest urban park. This is a great place to take an evening stroll, have picnics, play games with the children, and fly kites.

The park has fountains, playground area, cafe, and a lake as well as many unique trees and vegetation including the exotic baobab trees imported from Argentina.

Day 4: Desert safari at Al Khor Udeid

For an unparalleled desert experience, venture out into the desert at Al Khor Udeid and enjoy a day full of dune bashing, desert safari, camel rides, swimming in the inland sea, and relaxing by the beach.

Al Khor Udeid is the most popular day trip from Doha and you can find a variety of tours to satisfy you. There are half and full-day safaris: the half-day safaris do not include lunch while the full-day safaris include traditional Bedouin lunch in the desert.

You can also opt for a tour that includes night camping in a Bedouin tent and enjoy the stillness of the desert at night. There are also sunset desert safaris – these are especially popular with couples. Here are the highlights of these tours:

4 by 4 vehicle Safari and sandboarding

The 4 X $ desert safari and dune bashing ride is the highlight of the trip for most people. Tour operators will take you up and down the desert sand dunes at high speeds, resulting in an adventurous ride.

Visitors also can sandboard down the dunes for a thrilling activity. Sandboarding is quite popular with kids and teens. The tour companies will provide the sand boards for free.

Camel ride, falcon handling, and photographing the desert

You can also opt for an additional camel ride and experience the desert life in a traditional way. The camel ride is quite bumpy and enjoyed by children.

Sitting astride a camel as it gets up is an equally fun and scary experience – totally memorable!

During the day, you will also be able to handle a falcon under the supervision of the tour operator and take a photo with a falcon on your hand. Throughout the day, you will have innumerable opportunities to photograph the desert landscape.

Swimming in the inland sea

You can also spend time on the beach and relax in the inland sea. The Inland Sea is located at the border with Saudi Arabia and is a beautiful natural wonder in Qatar.

Here the desert meets the Arabian Gulf creating a panoramic and scenic landscape. At high tide, the sea is created among the dunes and is an amazing experience.

Camping in the desert

Day visits and night stays will be often accompanied by BBQ buffet lunch or dinners, shisha, and resting in the Bedouin tent. The desert is beautiful at night and tranquil.

You can rest by a bonfire and may even have the opportunity to enjoy Arabian music under the stars – depending on your tour operator.

Overall, we highly recommend the desert safari to have a memorable time in the desert.

Day 5: Zekreet Peninsula, East-West sculpture, Al-Zubarah Fort

Drive out into the desert near the Zekreet peninsula and see the East-West / West-East sculpture by artist Richard Serra. Stop at the Film City ghost town and admire the abandoned buildings. Visit Qatar’s only UNESCO Site of Al-Zubarah Fort. End your day by relaxing at the Pearl.

Zekreet Peninsula

Zekreet peninsula located in western Qatar is another exciting day trip from Doha. It is just an hour away from the city.

Zekreet peninsula has unique geographical landforms including the half moon shaped bay of Zekreet, unspoiled beaches, mushroom rocks, and limestone escarpments.

The Zekreet peninsula also has lots of wildlife including ostrich, wild deer, gazelles, flamingos, the Arabian oryx which is Qatar’s national animal.

Zekreet is also a popular destination for camping. Here are some of the most popular things to do in Zekreet peninsula.

East West / West East sculpture

Apart from the sculpture ‘Seven’ near the Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha, American sculptor Richard Sierra has another modern art installation in the Zekreet peninsula of Qatar.

The East-West / West-East sculpture consists of 4 steel plates rising out of the sand and dominating the sky. The steel plates are between 48 ft and 55 ft high and are level at the top.

Visitors can touch the plates and marvel at this unique artwork. The highway doesn’t reach the sculpture and you will need to off-road over the sand to visit. Hence, we recommend visiting with a tour guide.

Film City ghost town

The Film City ghost town is an abandoned city that was built for a movie set and now lies empty and unused.

The fortified city has towers and gates but is completely uninhabited; it is one of the most unusual sights in the middle of the desert.

You can enter the Film City, take photos, and talk with the guards before making your way around the peninsula.

Natural Wildlife Reserve

The Al Reem Biosphere Reserve is located in the Zekreet peninsula.

This is a UNESCO protected area has plenty of unique desert flora and fauna including the endangered oryx, gazelle, osprey, flamingos, and more.

Wildlife sightings are unfortunately not that common but if you are lucky, you may spot an oryx.

Al-Zubarah Fort and Archeological Site

The Al-Zubarah fort and ruins of the nearby walled town of Al Zubarah are Qatar’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located by the shore in Northwest Qatar, the coastal town was a flourishing pearling village and important trade center on the Persian Gulf in the 18th century.

Al Zubarah traded goods with Asian subcontinent and the Middle East through routes in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf before it was destroyed and abandoned in the 19th century.

At the archeological site of Al Zubarah, you can see the preserved remains of houses, streets, mosque, fortified walls, and the harbor. The site is currently closed to the public since excavation is taking place.

The Al Zubarah fort overlooks the town but was built much later in 1938. It is fascinating to visit the fort and the village and understand Qatar’s importance in pearl trading.

Inside the fort, you will find a museum with archeological artifacts, maps, and other historical exhibits about the area’s history.

Al Zubarah is an hour away from Doha and you will need a car or tour to visit. We recommend renting a car or hiring car + driver for the entire day and visit Zekreet and Al Zubarah together.

If you don’t wish to spend the entire day in the desert, then consider a luxurious day trip to the Pearl. You can also visit Pearl in the evening after checking out Zekreet and Al Zubarah during the day.

The Pearl Qatar is an artificial island with office and commercial space, lavish seaside villas, luxurious hotels, residential communities, and apartment buildings, upscale shopping, fine restaurants serving international cuisines, cafes, and bakeries.

Pearl is the ultimate urban oasis and makes you forget that you are in the Middle East.  This area is extremely popular with ex-pats, tourists, and locals alike.

We recommend visiting the Pearl and walking along the seaside as well as inside the Pearl. Do some window shopping and dine in one of the cafes or restaurants. Visit areas such as Little Venice (designed like Italy) and just people watch.

Day 6: Souvenir shopping in Souq Waqif and relaxing spa massage in Doha

On your final day in Qatar, we recommend visiting Souq Waqif again to buy souvenirs, eat some more of Qatari cuisine, and catch up with the activities that you might have missed on an earlier visit.

Some of the best souvenirs to buy in Qatar include the Arabian tea and coffee pots, entire tea sets with cups and saucers, shishas, apparel including bejeweled dresses for women, shawls, and capes, oud perfumes, dry fruits including dates, baklavas, and other sweets.

You can also opt for traditional magnets, postcards, and other souvenirs.

In the afternoon, we recommend getting a luxurious spa massage in Doha.

Did you know, Doha has some of the best spa resorts in the world? Most of these resorts also accommodate day guests and you can even avail most of the resort amenities on a half-day or full-day trip.

Some of the best spas in Doha include the Anantara Spa at the Banana Island Resort and the Six Senses Spa at Sharq Village and Spa.

If you have less time?

What to do if you have less time? You can still follow our epic Qatar itinerary. If you are in Qatar on a layover and have just 1 day in Doha, we recommend checking out our article on the Best Things to do in Doha, Qatar .

If you have just 3 days in Qatar, we recommend seeing the Museum of Islamic Arts, Souq Waqif, the Corniche and dhow ride, Katara, Aspire Zone, and a day trip out to the desert.

If you have 4 days in Qatar, use the extra day to see the Zekreet peninsula and Al Zubarah or spend it relaxing at the Pearl, Doha.

Such an amazing place with a rich history! I’d like to explore that museum more. I’m a bit nerd for history and historical sites, too!

I think Qatar looks and sounds like an incredible place to visit. Hopefully one day! Great article and awesome photos…thanks for sharing!

I’m all about visiting this section of the world and your article gives me even more reason to want to visit. I hope one day it will be possible to do so. With current geo-political tensions, it’s still on my list but on hold slightly. Your article is great and your photos are wonderful!

I had no idea that Hindi was spoken so widely in Qatar! Sadly I don’t speak hindi or Arabic, so no horse-petting for me 🙁 I love markets though, I think I’d be happy just wandering around!

Qatar definitely looks like a fascinating place, a meeting of cultures and architecture to be sure! Some day I would love to explore the Middle East, and it’s rapidly changing cities like Doha!

Wow! There is so much to see and do! Did you know that in this country, they toast with water for weddings? I learned about this years ago because I’m obsessed with weddings and I don’t drink alchohol so I thought this was the coolest ever and would love to visit!

I love that the government is making such a concerted effort to preserve Bedouin heritage throughout Qatar – sounds like a really authentic destination – reminds me a lot of neighboring Dubai but without the mass tourism and western influence. The Museum of Islamic Art sounds really interesting – such a beautiful building too – I adore that staircase!!

I’ve never really thought about going to Qatar, but I have been to Oman and U.A.E. The souqs are one of my favourite parts of those countries. Thanks for the detailed itinerary.

Excellent artical , do you have to book hotels and tours through Qatar Airways for transit visa ? Otherwise do you require a local sponsor for visa ? The information on there website is confusing ( for Indian citizens )

Sachin, if you are traveling via Qatar Airways and have a stopover in Doha then you receive the visa free of cost. You just need a ticket into Qatar and an onward flight ticket, both tickets have to be on Qatar Airways. You also need to provide a copy of passports. The entire application can be completed online at Qatar Airways website. You can book hotels/cars/tours on your own. The visa won’t apply if you have a India-Qatar round trip ticket. It is an excellent stopover if traveling from US-India.

Qatar Itinerary

Things to know before visiting Qatar

The itinerary is planned so that for the first 2 days, you will visit the major landmarks of Doha, the capital city of Qatar. On day 3, you can extend a bit further and explore the city’s outskirts. The desert lands will be your home on days 4 and 5. Finally, on day 6, you can take a day trip from Doha to the nearby states.

Table of Contents

National Museum Of Qatar (NMOQ)

National museum of Qatar

Start your day at the National Museum of Qatar (NMOQ), where you learn about Qatar’s rich heritage and fascinating history. Architect Ateliers Jean Nouvel started building this museum in 2011, which took 8 long years to complete. One of the key facets of the design is the desert rose, a mineral crystal found in the Gulf region. The architect aimed to depict the eternity of deserts and their fluidity through the design.

The museum offers several experiences that stimulate your senses and enable you to learn about Qatar’s past. In fact, as you make your way through the various galleries, you’ll notice that your sense of smell is also stimulated subtly with traditional incense of different aromas. You can also explore the hidden cave inside the museum.

One of the National Museum’s latest video installations: “Your Brain To Me, My Brain To You” is Pipilotti Rist’s first video installation in the Middle East, curated by Tom Eccles and Bouthayna Baltaji. The art piece symbolizes humanity’s collective unconscious and the power of the mind. Pipilotti Rist’s art has 12000 LED lights, creating the atmosphere of inhabiting the artist’s brain, which invites visitors to embark on a journey of self-discovery through a multi-sensory experience that inspires introspection and awe.

Another fascinating aspect of the museum is the Sheik Abdulla Bin Jassim Al Thani, an old museum built in 1975, located in a special area inside the NMOQ.

Museum of Islamic Art

Museum of islamic art

Yet another museum in the vast MIA Park is an iconic landmark in Qatar. MIA museum, whose building is considered a work of art, comprises thousands of unique collectibles displayed in 18 galleries, including the masterpiece by legendary architect I. M. Pei.

In this place, you can learn about the world of Islamic craftsmanship, culture, history, and religion. The audio guides in multiple languages help the visitors understand the nuances of the above subjects. If you’re looking for some Grammable moments, you can go to the arch viewpoint on the open space. The place has a picturesque skyline as it overlooks Doha Bay. Apart from this, exhibitions and events happen regularly. Visit their official website to book the tickets online .

West Mound-Skyline Viewpoint (MIA Park)

Top 10 free places to visit in Doha, Qatar - skyline view point

Besides the arch viewpoint, MIA Park also houses the West Mound-Skyline Viewpoint. During the golden hours, the place mesmerizes visitors as the sun’s rays reflect on the tall buildings of the bay area, which in turn, reflect on the water. The visual is indeed a sight to behold.

The place is one of the best viewpoints to watch fireworks during Qatar’s National Day, which is celebrated on November 18 every year. On other days you can take a peaceful stroll by the Corniche area or even take a dhow cruise ride.

You must also see the Pearl Monument at the entrance and tour Banana Island . But make sure to visit during the day if you have plans.

Colorful Souq Wakif at the heart of the city

Situated just opposite the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif is a traditional marketplace that comes to life at night. From Arab spices, dates, nuts, home decor, garments, souvenirs, pet stalls, restaurants, and shisha lounges, you can get everything, and the place is packed with people.

There is also a separate area where you can spot falcons and camels. The buildings with narrow paths, dating back to the 20th century, have a good Arab market vibe. From here, catch the sight of the Al Koot Fort or Doha Fort, a historic military fortress closed for visitors to enter.

Ohh! Did you spot the public art of the golden thumb while roaming around? If not, search for it. After visiting all the above places, you must be tired and hungry. End your majestic day with an authentic Qatari dinner and call it a day.

Msheireb Museums

Msheireb Museums celebrate the history of 4 historic houses at the heart of downtown Doha: Bin Jelmood House, Mohammed Bin Jassim House, Company House, and Radwani House. They also have a gift shop and mini library. Each home raises awareness among people by portraying the house’s past, present, and future. The interiors perfectly blend the classic and modern design and elevate the places’ aesthetics.

Msheireb Museum requests visitors to dress conservatively, covering the knees and shoulders, as a sign of respect for Qatari culture. The entry might only be allowed if your clothing is appropriate.

State Grand Mosque

State Grand mosque Doha, Qatar

Imam Abdul Wahhab Mosque, also known as the state grand mosque, is the largest mosque in the country. Entry is open to all visitors, irrespective of religion, during non-prayer hours. The people must dress conservatively, and the women are provided with scarves or even abayas if needed.

The three-storied air-conditioned mosque consists of a total of 93 domes. The arches, marble flooring, corridors, large courtyards, and domes are modern. This simple yet elegant architecture houses separate prayer halls for both men and women, a library, and beautiful gardens.

Note: Footwear, food, and beverages are not allowed. Photography is prohibited inside prayer halls. Children less than 7 years of age are allowed only inside the women’s prayer hall.

Doha Corniche

Qatar nightlife - doha corniche

The waterfront promenade stretches for 7 km along Doha Bay. One of the most attractive skyscrapers in the world is the Doha Corniche. The corniche promenade and park are popular among the locals who gather with families and friends for running, walking, and other social activities. Pick your corner and relax along the corniche.

Katara Cultural Village

Katara cultural village mosque

With many cultural events happening daily, Katara Cultural Village is a go-to destination for festivals, concerts, live shows, and entertainment. The beautiful Katara Masjid, the Golden Masjid, the Opera House, a drama theater, an amphitheater, galleries, gardens, and the dove tower are a few landmarks in the Katara village.

For FIFA’22, the village hosted 51 events covering more than 300 activities, with the participation of 22 countries. Check the official website for the latest events happening in the village.

You can also play at the Katara beach sands, which are located nearby. Grab a bite at Tasty Street for a lot of quick grabs and street food.

Pearl Qatar

Pearl Qatar bird eye view

Pearl Island in Doha is an artificial island on the Gulf coastline which spans about 4 Km. The similar-looking buildings cover the magnificent yachts and restaurants along the sides with a designer mall.

The place imbibes a grandeur that seems far away from the city you visit on day 1. You can look at the luxurious yachts in Porto Arabia, where you can take a stroll. You must visit the dancing fountain in Souq Al Medina’s courtyard that lights up the sky after sundown. Besides these, witness Marsha Arabia and Viva Bahriya , circular lagoons surrounded by tall towers and high-end brand showrooms, such as Ferrari, Rolls Royce, and Versace.

Pearl Qatar - Qanat Quartier venice view

Qanat Quartier is known as the country’s own little Venice. The Venetian charm inspired the place and combined the rustic look with Arabian chic. Flanked by candy-colored buildings and water-front restaurants, you can experience a glimpse of Venice.

Visitors can move around the island by hitchhiking in a free tuk-tuk. The blue tuk-tuks, usually parked outside Qanat Quantier’s main gate by the valet parking area, are available daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. You can call +97450664834 and ask to be picked up within the pearl. Waiting time is typically less than 15 minutes.

Don’t miss the water taxi that connects Porto Arabia to the canals of Qanat Quartier at only 25 QAR (two-way). The water taxi runs daily from Porto Arabia (Gate 11) to Qanat Quartier (by Evergreen Organics cafe) every 20 minutes.

Lusail City

Ride along the modern manufactured Lusail city to witness the unique skyscrapers lit along the road. You must have your dinner at the Marina food arena , which is home to a variety of delicacies from different countries. The drool-worthy dishes are worth every penny spent, and you will thank us!

After soaking in so much history and heritage and having delicious food, it’s time to head to the city’s outskirts. Unlike the previous two days, the next two will be more relaxed, and you can experience the city’s other side away from its hustle and bustle.

3 2 1 Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum

Qatar olympic and sports museum near the Khalifa stadium

Any sports enthusiast will feel like they’re in heaven when they step into the 3 2 1 Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum. The world’s second-largest sports museum’s design is inspired by the Olympic Rings and resides next to the Khalifa Stadium. The museum is a comprehensive guide to sports history, from the ancient age to the modern Olympics. In fact, you can get an immersive experience by playing specific games in the Activation Zone.

The museum is abode to some of the most famous sports artifacts, such as Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey, Mohammed Ali’s gloves, rings, and many more. The sheer presence gives any sportsperson, athlete, or aficionado goosebumps as they stand amidst the preserved glory of such players.

The Khalifa International Stadium beside the museum was first built in 2006. Also known as the National Stadium of Qatar, the Khalifa International Stadium was renovated for the FIFA World Cup 2022. If you get the chance, do visit this majestic stadium.

Aspire Park

Aspire Park is a calm and serene place home to an artificial lake where swans and ducks reside. You can also go boating and kayaking in the lake, and the park has a dedicated play area that keeps the kids and adults engaged.

The park also offers an alluring view of the torch tower, which you can see while walking on paved footpaths. There are also restaurants and stalls where you can satisfy your appetite. Above and beyond these, the park also has Kidszania, Jungle Zone, and Trampo Extreme, which are quite fun. Overall, Aspire Park is a perfect picnic for families and friends who love to spend time outdoors.

Villagio Mall

I love Qatar in Villagio mall

Well-known for its sky rooftop and gondola ride, the Villagio Mall has dining options, world-class brands, an ice rink, a movie theater, and an adventure play area. You will be in awe of the interiors that exude panache and have a touch of royalty. At night, the mall is lit with dramatic lights, which elevate its aura and will leave you astounded. The place is known for its avant-garde shopping experience, and you mustn’t miss it.

For the fourth day, we’ll take you to the desert sands of Qatar and intriguing places far from the city. But before we go, here are a few things that’ll help you prepare better for the adventurous day ahead.

  • Carry enough snacks and sufficient water for the day, as you’ll find no shops or restaurants on your journey.
  • No proper roads are laid to reach these spots, so you’ll be offroading. Moreover, the GPS works well, but many routes are misleading.
  • It is highly recommended to go in a high-ground clearance vehicle.
  • Return before the daylight ends.
  • Ideally, you must visit the place during the cooler months of the year as you can enjoy the pleasant weather.

With multiple yet no dedicated routes, you’ll feel like a true explorer for whom the journey is more enjoyable than the destination. Another fascinating thing about these places is that you wonder how the various places, such as the sinkhole, rocks, art, and more, came into existence in the middle of nowhere.

Musfur Sinkhole

Musfur sinkhole - Qatar

Musfur sinkhole is a natural cave 300 feet deep and 40 feet wide. According to researchers, Qatar’s deepest accessible cave is said to be about 500,000 years old. In fact, the rock formations are unique, but as you tread into the cave, you must be careful since the rocks are slippery.

Furthermore, a fence protects this natural wonder from animals and other things. Another intriguing aspect is that the deepest part of the cave has a lower temperature than the outside. In addition, there are no bats or water at the bottom. These facets of the Musfur Sinkhole make you ponder how the place came into being and why it is the way it is.

The mystery and enigma of the place captivate the visitors, and you must ensure you only go to the site in broad daylight. One more thing you need to be mindful of is not to throw waste around and bring back all your trash.

Al Karaana Lagoon

Birds found at Al Karaana Lagoon, Qatar

The Al Karaana Lagoon is bird watchers’ and wildlife photographers’ home. The place is almost mystical because you can find water in the middle of a desert and spot numerous wildlife species in their homeland roaming freely. The place is not frequently explored, hence is quaint and relaxing. This is your perfect getaway if you want to spend time by the water or gaze at the lagoon while standing in a desert.

Dukan Public Beach

If the adventurer in you is still unsatisfied, visit the Dukan Public Beach. The place has various watersports activities you can indulge yourself in. If you are more walk-along-the-shore type, you can peacefully stroll and even collect different seashells.

You can see people fishing, boating, and all the usual sea-shore activities. The white sands, turquoise blue crystal clear waters, and a golden sunset by the beach are bewitching and make for gram-worthy moments.

Zakreet Rock Formations/ Mystery Village

Although the village is a fascinating destination, you must catch the unique rock formations just before you reach the place. These are known as the Zakreet Rock Formations, and their timeless natural beauty captures your attention like nothing else.

You can also climb to the top and explore the rocky terrain. We played a game while visiting this place: ‘ What’s this!’ The idea is to associate each formation with something tangible, like a bird or an object. It makes up for fun conversations as you reach the top, which offers a panoramic view of the area.

East-West/ West-East

east-west west-east art by Richard Serra

If you have a vehicle that could ride through the desert sands, visit the East-West/ West-East by Richard Sierra and the Film City. East-West/ West-East is a work of art amidst the wild surroundings, situated in the Zekreet desert, and is surrounded by Ras Brouq’s white cliffs. The art installation gets its name from its structure and purpose. The 4 tall steel sculptures (each over 14 m in height) reflect the sun’s movement as it rises from the east and sets over the Qatari desert in the west.

Qatar Film city

Mimicking an old Arabic home in the desert sands, the film city is a deserted fort built with mud, bricks, plenty of gates, and a Qatar flag hoisted at the entrance. You must visit the place if you’re into urban exploration and abandoned architecture photography. The place is occupied by a caretaker who lives inside a room and is very welcoming to tourists.

Desert Safari & Inland Sea

Inland sea - dessert safari

The adventure doesn’t end on day 4. On day 5, you can bash the desert’s dunes in different ways. Choose a half-day package with camel rides, quad biking, and sandboarding. The experience is a must for anyone who visits Qatar or other Middle Eastern countries.

In Qatar, the package comes with visiting the Inland Sea or Khor Al Adaid, an extraordinary landscape where crystal clear blue seabed meets the yellow sands of the desert. The golden hours are the best time to go to this site!

Al Zubarah fort

Now that the adrenaline junkie in you is satiated, you can take a day trip to nearby states on day 6. Baladiyat, or the municipality of Al Wakrah, Al Khor , and Qatar’s only UNESCO world heritage site, Al Zubarah Fort, are a couple of places you can visit. The latter was once a thriving fishing and trading port known for original pearls.

With its Middle Eastern architecture, Souq Waqif in Al Wakrah stands out amongst others on the list. You can choose either of these 3 places depending on your time and comfort.

With this, the itinerary comes to an end. Qatar is a place that combines history, sports, adventure, desert, water bodies, and more. There’s something for everyone here; you can visit the place with friends, and family, or even come solo.

Your Trip to Doha: The Complete Guide

plan a trip to qatar

Doha, the capital of Qatar, has long been known to long-haul travelers as a transit hub between East and West, but more recently it has, quite literally, become hot new destination, famous for its art. To get the most out of your visit to this bustling city flanked by the Arabian (Perisan) Gulf and the desert, find out the best to visit and what to do when you are there with this guide.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit : If you are looking for a warm, sunny getaway, look no further. It's always sunny in Doha, with a maximum rainfall of three inches a year—all of which fall in brief but sometimes heavy showers during the winter months. The best time to visit is between October and late April, when the sun shines, but the temperatures are comfortable. Even in the cooler months of December and January, the temperatures rarely dip below 57 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius), whereas in the summer months, they regularly reach temperatures of 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius).

But, as Qatar is a Muslim country, keep a note of when Ramadan falls. It changes every year, and during this Holy Month, it is illegal to eat and drink in public between sunrise and sunset, so you will find most restaurants and cafes closed, even in hotels.

Language: The official language is Arabic, but everybody speaks English, so communication is not a problem. Please note that Arabic is a phonetic language, and often you will find the English translations spelling the same words differently, such as Al Dhakira Beach which is also spelled Al Thakirah, Al Thakeera, and Al Thakhira.

Currency: The official currency in Doha is the Qatari riyal, abbreviated to QR or QAR. One riyal is made up of 100 dirhams, which is also the smallest coin denomination. Notes come in 5 riyals (violet), 10 riyals (brown), 50 riyals (green), 100 riyals (red) and 500 riyals (blue).

The Qatari riyal is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a fixed exchange rate of US$1 = 3.64 QAR. ATMs dispensing the local currency are found dotted around the airport and the city, most of which allow you to withdraw QAR with a foreign card. There are also plenty of money exchange kiosks, where you can exchange money for riyals.

Banks are open daily except Fridays between 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., although some branches in busy shopping malls, for example, may also be open in the evening.

Getting Around : The most widely used form of transport is the hire car and the taxi. All the well-known car hire companies have a kiosk at the airport, while Karwa taxis are abundant and cheap, with the meter starting at 20 Qatari riyals from the airport, elsewhere at 4 Qatari riyals, adding 1.2 to 1.8 Qatari riyals per kilometer, depending on time of day. There are public buses, which are air-conditioned and clean, and while they have a schedule, the actual service may be a little erratic. You will need a Karwa Smart Card to pay for bus tickets. Machines dispensing those are located in the Arrivals Hall in the airport. The Doha Metro is also an option .

Your hotel can order you a limousine and driver for the day if you want to have several stops in comfort and privacy, at an hourly or day rate.

Travel Tip: The Qataris are a modest people and appreciate it when visitors dress according to the culture and traditions of the country. Women don’t have to wear an abaya nor do they have to cover their heads, but it is advised that women cover their shoulders and legs down to the knees. Men in shorts are frowned upon as well, especially when out and about. On the beach however, you are welcome to wear briefs and bikinis, although topless sunbathing is prohibited.

Bring layers – in the malls and anywhere indoors the AC is usually blasting, so just bring a cardigan or shirt to cover up when inside.

Things to Do

Doha is a bustling city in a desert country. In the city itself you can visit the superb museums and galleries , walk along the beach promenade, the Corniche, and shop all day and late into the night in the traditional souk and large modern shopping malls. But only seeing Doha is missing an important part of what is essential and ingrained into Qatari daily life, the desert. Day trips or overnight glamping trips are a must to get the full experience of this small country.

What to Eat and Drink

Qatari cuisine is a mix of Lebanese, Yemeni, and Indian. Expect a lot of chicken, lamb, and rice, paired with plenty of salads, dips like hummus and moutabal, fresh fish, and honeyed sweets and dates. Restaurants in Doha are as diverse as the cuisine. You can enjoy a meal at luxurious fine-dining restaurants like Hakkasan or have a more down-to-Earth, but equally delicious meal at Bandar Aden . Head to Al Aker Sweets to enjoy some traditional desserts. You will also find nightclubs and bars for tourists.

Where to Stay

If it’s your first time staying on the Arabian Peninsula, prepare to be amazed. You might think that you have seen luxurious hotels and know what to expect from a Ritz Carlton or a Kempinski, but in Doha they added that little bit extra. Most global luxury and lower-end hotels have a property in the capital, and you can choose from beach resorts or city business hotels.

Getting There

Pretty much the only way of getting to Doha is by plane, unless you are driving across the border from Saudi Arabia. Qatar Airways flies direct from some 160 worldwide destinations and has won many awards for its outstanding service. All major international airlines such as American Airlines, Cathay, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, and United Airlines all fly into Hamad International Airport .

Travel Document Requirements

Nationals of some 85 countries can enter Qatar without a prior visa and stay for a predetermined length of time (either 30 or 90 days depending on the country) without needing a visa. Those countries include the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, and the EU. Your passport must be valid for six months or more upon arrival.

Culture and Customs

Qatar is a Muslim country and it is expected that visitors dress modestly, covering shoulders and legs down to the knee when outside of their hotel. On the beaches and by the pools you are allowed to wear bikinis, although topless bathing is not allowed. Alcohol is available in most hotels and restaurants located within hotels, although you will find local smaller restaurants will not have an alcohol license. Pork products are not available in Qatar. During Ramadan it is forbidden to eat and drink in public between sunrise and sunset, and most shops and restaurants will be closed during the day. The major hotels will have a secluded restaurant open for visitors to eat in.

When eating with your hands, avoid using your left hand, as that one is deemed unclean. Equally, if you choose to sit on the floor with locals, try not to show the soles of your feet to the other guests.

Money-Saving Tips

You can easily spend a lot of money in Doha staying at luxury five-star hotels, eating in some of the best restaurants, and buying top designer clothes . But there are plenty of smaller hotels in town where the prices are not extravagant, and eating in the local restaurants outside of the hotels is a real bargain, and more authentic to boot. Try the local shawarma, a wrap with shaved lamb or chicken meat, or an egg shawarma, essentially a thin omelette in a wrap, and you will be eating deliciously for loose change.

For good 2-for-1 savings deals, download the My Book Qatar app , where you can find many restaurants and leisure activities listed offering special deals.

Planning a visit to Qatar and looking for the best Qatar itinerary? You’ve come to the right place! This 3 days in Qatar itinerary is the perfect introduction to the country that will be hosting the World Cup in 2022. There’s so much more to Qatar than meets the eye.

Despite its small size (4,486 mi²), it’s actually the richest country in the world. And with 2.5 million people (but only half a million Qataris), it’s a multicultural destination that exceeds expectations at every turn. I’ve written an extensive 3 days in Doha itinerary to help you make the best of a short period of time here – and encourage you to visit again and and again.

Table of Contents

Arrival in Qatar: How to Get to Doha

In an ideal world, you’ll  arrive the evening before your first full day in Qatar and get a good night’s sleep . Although you can arrive to Doha on a cruise ship, the more popular mode of transportation is to fly into Hamad International Airport. Qatar Airways usually offers the best deals (and the most comfortable planes) for flights to Doha but be sure to check out Skyscanner for the best flight deals!

3 Day Qatar Itinerary: Day One in Doha

The majority of the things do in Qatar are in Doha so this post could interchangeably be called a Doha itinerary or a Qatar itinerary. The first day of this Doha itinerary is a bit action-packed, but it’s designed to help you make the most of your time while in Doha. I personally found that I was happy spending around 2 hours in each of the two museums but you can always adjust this itinerary according to your level of interest in Islamic art and / or Qatari history.

The Imam Abdul Wahaab Shaikh Mosque

Start your day with a visit to the impressive Imam Abdul Wahaab Shaikh Mosque , one of the largest mosques in Qatar. The architecture and design here is truly a work of art – understated with spectacular attention to detail. It is open to non-Muslims as long as it isn’t prayer time. Women are helped into abayas at the women’s entrance and men are expected to show up dressing appropriately (covering knees and shoulders). It has over 90 domes and can accommodate 30,000 people, so prepare to be impressed.

Msheireb Museums

Next, take a bus or Uber to your next stop, the Msheireb Musuems.

Although you would never guess by the way the country looks now, Qatar was once a desolate desert with an economy fueled by pearl fishing. I learned this and much more at the Msheireb Museums , located in Doha’s old cultural capital. This collection of museums, comprising of four different buildings, showcase not just the history of Qatar and Doha, but also family and cultural life and architectural innovation and development. However, my favorite building is Bin Jelmood House, focused entirely on the historical and modern day slave trade. The museum doesn’t shy away from addressing the role various countries (including Qatar) have played and continue to play in both historical and modern slavery. This topic is so easily glossed over in the United States and I really appreciate how Qatar addresses it directly. This is by far one of the best history and cultural museums I’ve been to worldwide and is truly not to be missed during a visit to Doha. Admission is free.

Lunch at Souq Waqif or IDAM

At this point, you’ll have two options: either you can stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants at the Souq Waqif , (20 minute walk from the Msheireb Musuems) or you can continue to the Museum of Islamic Art and eat lunch at the cafe there. The choice is yours.

Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

Walk 20 minutes (take a shortcut through the Souq) to arrive at the Museum of Islamic Art. Located on the Doha Corniche, the Museum of Islamic Art is home to the largest collection of Islamic art in the world . Designed by IM Pei (the architect behind The Louvre), the museum has seriously impressive and beautiful art pieces from three continents: everything from pottery to jewelry to weapons. Even the building itself is a postmodern work of art, with the top curved windows shaped like a pair of eyes, fondly known as “the eyes of Doha.” Gorgeous plazas flank either side of the museum, boasting some spectacular views of the Doha skyline. And of course, just outside, the MIA Park has plenty of green space for relaxing and people watching, plus a café to boot. If you’re hungry, grab lunch inside at IDAM , Alain Ducasse’s first restaurant in the Middle East. Have I sold you on this place yet? Oh yeah – admission is free here too.

Dhow Cruise

After a bustling day exploring the city, relax with a sunset cruise around the waterfront in a dhow, a traditional wooden boat. You’ll get spectacular views of the Doha skyline, the Museum of Islamic Arts, The Pearl, and more. You’ll have the option of doing a one-hour cruise or a three-one, which includes dinner.  Book it ahead of time  here .

Explore and eat dinner at Souq Waqif

End your day by exploring, shopping and eating at the Souq Waqif. Easily my favorite spot in Doha, the Souq Waqif pays homage to the traditional marketplaces of the country from the pearl-diving days. Despite being renovated in 2006 after a fire, it still retains authentic Qatari architecture and is the best place to shop for souvenirs. You could easily spend hours and hours exploring the Souq – luckily, it doesn’t close until 10 pm. While I recommend wandering around and taking in all the sights and smells, be sure not to miss any of the main attractions listed below. Grab a map from the Souq Waqif Information & Tourism Center and go!

  • The Falcon Souq: Falconry is a traditional Qatari sport still practiced today, and these majestic birds retail for thousands of dollars. In the falcon area of the market, be sure to visit the shop dedicated to selling all things related to the birds (including falcons themselves). You can even get a photo of yourself holding one. If you’re even more curious, stop by the nearby Falcon Hospital and check out the falcon waiting room and pharmacy. It’s fascinating!
  • The Gold Souq: Ornate jewelry, anyone? The section of the souq dedicated to gold is almost as beautiful as the gold itself. Here you’ll find a wide variety of stunning pieces, although you’ll likely be more tempted to just window shop in this area.
  • The Bird Souq: Falcons aren’t the only bird species that Qataris purchase. You’ll hear the bird souq before you see it, thanks to the incredible and slightly overwhelming number of species available for sale.
  • The Horse Stables: For a bit of calm away from the chaos of the central souq, head over to The Horse Stables and bid your salams to the horses used by the souq’s heritage police (aka security). Don’t worry though, visitors are encouraged.
  • The Camel Pen: If you haven’t quite gotten your fill of animals, scope out the camel pen to watch the camels enjoy their evening meal.
  • Local Art: The Souq Waqif Art Center showcases works by both local and international artists. You’ll find everything from Islamic Calligraphy to photography to paintings.
  • The Shops: If you’re looking to purchase souvenirs from Qatar, Souq Waqif is the place to do it! You’ll find a large collection of your typical souvenirs like magnets and trinkets, but you can also purchase traditional Qatari goods. Qatar is known for Oud, a strong incense sold in both perfume and wood form that is a favorite amongst locals. Spices are also a popular gift, along with clothing, dates, and more.
  • The Food: Souq Waqif is home to an impressively large collection of restaurants, both Qatari and otherwise. Whether you’re here for a snack, a meal, or a coffee stop, there are plenty of drinks and bites to satisfy your craving.

Eat dinner at The Souq Waqif. Qatari traditional food is surprisingly hard to come by, especially due to the large influence of international flavors in the country. However, if you’re looking to try some local dishes, stop by either Al Jasra Traditional Food or Shay al Shomoos for a taste of balaleet (sweetened noodles topped with egg) or makboos (spiced rice topped with protein). If international cuisine is what you’re after, don’t miss the heavenly Iranian eats found at Parisa , the Persian restaurant that is as sparkly as it is delicious.

Qatar Itinerary: Day Two in Qatar

While there are plenty of things to do and see in Doha, on your second day, you’ll experience what to do in Qatar outside of the city center. Be prepared to spend at least a few hours in the car today. The earlier you start, the better.

Khor Al Adaid (Inland Sea), Dune Bashing and Camel Rides

This is the day in the Qatar itinerary that you can’t do independently, since you’ll need a 4×4, so book a half-day , full-day , or overnight tour for a desert adventure.

After an hour or so drive, you’ll arrive at the entrance to the desert, where you can do an optional camel ride while your driver removes air from the car tires in preparation for dune bashing. Dune bashing is exactly the exhilarating adventure it sounds like – sliding down desert dunes sideways in a car. It takes anywhere from 30 – 45 minutes to arrive at Khor Al Adaid, the sea where Qatar meets Saudi Arabia (you can actually see Saudi from the shoreline). It’s also a beautiful place to dip your toes in or swim, if you so choose. Depending on your choice of tour, you will either return to Doha after a stop for some refreshments or continue on to lunch.

Note: If you choose the half-day tour, you’ll likely arrive back to your hotel around 2pm. If so, you can easily choose to do any of the other activities I recommend in my things to do in Doha post .

Regency Sealine Camp (Overnight)

Traveling to Qatar? Check out this ultimate guide to the best things to do in Doha (and beyond)! Whether you have a layover in Doha or are spending a couple of weeks there, this Qatar itinerary will show you ALL the cool things to do in Qatar. Click to read more and plan your trip. | https://passportandplates.com

Spending the night in the desert is easily one of the highlights of this Qatar itinerary and what better way to camp than in style at the Regency Sealine Camp ? While the above-mentioned overnight tour takes place at a typical Bedouin camp, Regency Sealine is for those who want both the beach resort and camping experience rolled into one. You get nice beds, bathrooms, and AC, and the private beach is right outside your door. Treat yourself!

Note: If you decide you don’t want to camp, I still recommend the full-day safari, which ends with a visit to Souq al Wakra. If you choose the half-day tour, add other activities to your Qatar itinerary from this post .

Doha Itinerary: Day Three in Doha

With the exception of the Fire Station and Racing Club, the majority of suggestions on day 3 are in Education City. Although it’s not really a “tourist attraction,” I think it’s one of the coolest parts of Doha. Education City is basically utopia for students: a collection of top universities and schools in one area with impressive services to match. While this may seem like a strange addition to the Doha itinerary, it’s home to some unique cultural icons of Doha. If these spots don’t appeal to you, you can always check out my guide to the best things to do in Doha for additional suggestions.

Doha Fire Station

Traveling to Qatar? Check out this ultimate guide to the best things to do in Doha (and beyond)! Whether you have a layover in Doha or are spending a couple of weeks there, this Qatar itinerary will show you ALL the cool things to do in Qatar. Click to read more and plan your trip. | https://passportandplates.com

Start off your day with a visit to Doha’s coolest art gallery, Fire Station (Be sure to check online to see if you’d be interested in the current exhibition). Not only are the contents of this contemporary art gallery  fascinating, so is the building itself. Operating as a fire station until 2012 (hence, the name), it was then gifted to the father Emir, who wanted a space for cultural expression. Thus, Fire Station was born,  starting as a standalone gallery and later expanding to include an artist-in-residence program.  While I was there, they were hosting an amazing exhibit about the plight of refugees (“Laundromat” by Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei). Attached to the Fire Station is  Café 999 , a peaceful place to work, grab a drink or some food, or people watch.

Qatar National Library

Traveling to Qatar? Check out this ultimate guide to the best things to do in Doha (and beyond)! Whether you have a layover in Doha or are spending a couple of weeks there, this Qatar itinerary will show you ALL the cool things to do in Qatar. Click to read more and plan your trip. | https://passportandplates.com

For your next stop, you can take the free shuttle bus (called the “Mathaf” bus) that will take you from Fire Station to the Qatar National Library in Education City.

I have this thing with libraries and bookstores. When I was little, I used to always tell people I would buy a bookstore if I were a millionaire. So when I found out that Doha has a  beautiful library , I knew I had to visit. If you’re anything like me, this library will feel like a playground. Not only is it absolutely  stunning, but it also has a plethora of amazing resources : a heritage library with historical written collections, a 3D printer, a quiet study corner, a café, and more. It has everything you would ever need in a work / study space and is easily one of my favorite spots in the city.

Mosque at Education City

Traveling to Qatar? Check out this ultimate guide to the best things to do in Doha (and beyond)! Whether you have a layover in Doha or are spending a couple of weeks there, this Qatar itinerary will show you ALL the cool things to do in Qatar. Click to read more and plan your trip. | https://passportandplates.com

Just a ten-minute walk from QNL is by far the most unique mosque I’ve ever set eyes on (and as a Muslim, I’ve been to a lot of mosques). The design is ultra-modern, set on five pillars to represent the five pillars of Islam, because symbolism. Inside, the white and pristine staircase leads up to the women’s section overlooking the men’s prayer area. There are also little skylights and windows to let natural light in. Every piece of this mosque’s design is exquisite. Definitely make a point to stop in, even it’s just for a quick peek.

Lunch at Chef’s Garden

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chef's Garden (@chefsgardendoha)

At this point, you’re probably eager for lunch. Although there are lots of food spots in the student recreation center in Education City, Chef’s Garden is an ideal choice for those who don’t want to relive their college days. Located inside Marwan’s Club in Al Shaqab, this café offers a selection of lunchtime bites. If the weather cooperates, I highly recommend the outdoor terrace overlooking a garden. You can get here either by walking for 30 minutes or by taking a quick Uber, depending on how hot it is.

Oxygen Park

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Visit Qatar (@visitqatar) on Feb 18, 2019 at 10:39am PST

Just a 15-minute walk from Chef’s Garden lies Oxygen Park. I was honestly surprised to find so many green spaces in Doha, especially considering that it’s a large city in the middle of the desert. Oxygen Park is one such space, designed to encourage people to get out and play, so to speak. One of the coolest parts is the design, with cooling tunnel segments for those running in the desert heat, recreation areas for rest and observation, and a small hill with views of Education City. It’s a fifteen-minute walk from Chef’s Garden and a design-lover’s dream – just another aspect that makes this area of Doha a must-visit.

Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club

Traveling to Qatar? Check out this ultimate guide to the best things to do in Doha (and beyond)! Now that you’ve had your fill of Education City, it’s time for some evening excitement. If you’re in Doha on a Wednesday or Thursday between November and April, don’t miss attending a race at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club . It’s one of the best horse training centers in the world, and admission to the races is free. I’d never been to a horse race prior to this and was fortunate to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility. Not only is the venue gorgeous, but the horses are incredibly well taken care of as well. Plus, the racing atmosphere is thrilling, even if you’re a dummy like me and don’t actually understand how to read the program.

Note: If this isn’t your scene, consider a visit to the Arab Museum of Modern Art or consider checking out The Pearl or Katara Village and having dinner there as well.

Dinner in Doha

View this post on Instagram A post shared by hks03 (@hks03)

You have a few different options for where to go to dinner on day 3 in Doha. It depends entirely on how you’re feeling. Note that all of these options will take some time with public transportation, so I recommend taking an Uber instead.

If you’re hungry after the horse races and are looking for somewhere nearby for dinner, you can eat at one of the many restaurants at the nearby Villaggio Mall (which is worth adding to your Qatar itinerary). Alternatively, you can head to The Torch in Aspire Park – Qatar’s tallest building with plenty of dining options .

Otherwise, you can make your way back to West Bay (where the majority of hotels are located) and eat there. I strongly recommend a meal at Al Mourjan . Located directly on The Corniche, the views of Doha’s skyline can’t be beat – plus it’s a nice chance to enjoy the evening breeze outside. The Mediterranean food menu is pretty spectacular as well.

If you still have energy and want to explore / hang out a bit after dinner, head to either The Pearl or Katara Village. Both have plenty of restaurant options and are great places to walk around or have a late(r) night out. You can also dine at either of these places if you prefer – just use Zomato as a resource to find good eats.

Since most people only spend a few days in Doha, this Qatar itinerary provides the highlights of what to see with 3 days in Doha (and beyond). Don’t worry if you have more than 3 days Qatar – there’s no shortage of things to do .

Extending your trip: what else to add to your Qatar itinerary

If you have more than 3 days in Qatar and are looking for an even more comprehensive guide to the best things to do, be sure to check out my ultimate Qatar guide here .

Where to Eat in Doha

I really wanted to eat at enough restaurants that weren’t chains or hotel restaurants to write a solid list here, but I ultimately failed. With the exception of balaleet, makboos, and Om Ali, Qatari cuisine is basically international fusion. Balaleet and makboos can be eaten at either  Al Jasra Traditional Food  or  Shay al Shomoos  and the best Om Ali (think Arab bread pudding) can be found at  Al Hubara  at The Sheraton Grand.

In Qatar you can easily find a large variety of international food and chains. Some of my favorite places to eat were  Parisa  (Souq Waqif),  Nobu  (The Four Seasons),  Al Mourjan  (West Bay), and  Sridan  (The Shangri-La). Zomato is a great local resource for finding good eats.

Where to Stay in Doha

Many well-known hotel chains have properties along West Bay, the heart of Doha. Due to its central location, it’s my pick for the  best neighborhood to stay in Doha.  I stayed at the  Sheraton Grand Doha , which was actually the first five star hotel in the country. The views and rooms were amazing, the service and amenities were exquisite and the food was delicious. Plus, it has its own beach and several pool. I highly recommend it.

If big chains aren’t your style, then it doesn’t get more boutique than the collection of  boutique hotels at Souq Waqif . I toured a bunch of them and each is more beautiful than the last. What’s more, you can use the amenities from the different hotels (spa, pool, etc) so you can get the full luxury experience.

Alternatively, check out my other recommendations below.

Musherib Hotel  (Budget-Friendly)

This charming budget-friendly hotel is located just a  5-minute walk from Souq Waqif  and offers an impressive array of amenities for its price point. Rooms are clean, comfortable, and spacious, equipped with kettles, coffee makers, safes. The hotel also includes a gym, spa, and restaurant on-site. Overall, this hotel is the whole package and an excellent accommodation choice in Doha.

Read Tripadvisor  reviews  |  Book a Stay

Ezdan Hotel Doha  (Mid-Range)

Located in the West Bay, this 4-star hotel is for those that are looking for an upgrade from “standard” accommodation that won’t break your bank. Rooms are modern, bright, and spacious, with spectacular views of the city. The staff is incredibly helpful and accommodating, the location is perfect, and there are  plenty of awesome amenities  including two swimming pools, a fitness center, two restaurants, and a supermarket. If a mid-range boutique-style hotel is what you’re after, this is where you should stay!

Sheraton Grand Doha  (Splurge)

If you want to treat yourself, what better place to do so than in Qatar’s original 5-star hotel? This is where I stayed the first time I visited Doha, and it was truly spectacular. This luxury hotel boasts large and comfortable  rooms with gorgeous decor, balconies, bathtubs, and a small seating area  (yes, even in the standard room). What’s more, you’ll have access to a private beach (for hotel guests only), three swimming pools, a state-of-the-art gym, and 7 restaurants on-site. What more could you need?

Qatar Packing List and What to Wear in Qatar

Qatar, although home to lots of expats, is still a pretty conservative country. While you don’t have to wear a headscarf or abaya, visitors and residents alike dress nicely and conservatively. For both men and women, that means covering up until your shoulders and knees at least. T-shirts and pants and/or long skirts are preferred. Below are some items that I recommend.

  • Blouses / Shirts: For when you’re out and about, you’ll want to bring along some cute tops  (short or long-sleeved depending on your sensitivity to the sun). People generally don’t dress sloppily so keep that in mind when choosing clothes. Just make sure whatever you pack is lightweight!
  • Lightweight, loose pants: Qatar is on the warmer side all-year round so you’ll want loose and lightweight everything, including pants . I’m a fan of this  particular style  but anything lightweight, but not sloppy, will do. Mix and match according to the season and your personal style.
  • Dresses: Bring a few nicer casual dresses that you can wear both during the day and in the evening. Make sure you bring something that covers below the knee   and  either covers your shoulders or can be paired with a cardigan.
  • Skirts: Depending on your style, having a couple of lightweight, maxi skirts is a lifesaver. Make sure they’re long and they match with your tops!
  • Large scarf or shawl:  Having a  large scarf  on hand is super helpful for impromptu mosque visits or to protect your skin when the sun is feeling just a little too strong. Plus, it’s a cute accessory for an outfit as well!
  • Sun hat: Your skin will want a break from the strong Qatari sun, especially if you’re prone to burning. Check out your options here .
  • Sunscreen: You’re in the desert and the sun is super strong so do not forget to back sunscreen! I’m a huge fan of this  Neutrogena sunscreen because it doesn’t leave your skin feeling gross and greasy. For the rest of me, I use the solid body stick, which works well.
  • Water bottle: This i nsulated water bottle is particularly awesome because it holds 20 oz and keeps water cold, which you’ll want in a hot country like Qatar. Also yes, you can drink tap water in Qatar.
  • Sandals:  I love  these Keen sandals because they’re cute and super comfortable to walk in all day. I bring them with me everywhere and they haven’t failed me yet.
  • All-purpose sneakers:  Last year, a friend of mine introduced me to Allbirds, these  awesome wool sneakers  that don’t make your feet sweat (even if you wear them without socks). Then I found out they’re made of Merino Wool, which explains the magic behind them. They’re cute, they’re functional, and they’re comfy AF. You can wear them to hike up a mountain or to explore a new city. They’re my go-to travel shoes and if they get dirty, I can throw them in the wash.

And in case you’re curious, these are all my must-have travel essentials no matter where I’m going!

Other Things to Know Before Visiting Qatar

Do i need a visa to visit qatar.

At the time of writing (February 2020), there was no visa fee for the stamp on arrival. You do have to have a departure ticket already booked. Many nationalities have the same luxury of fee-free visas, but of course, double check before buying your plane ticket.

What’s the best time to visit Qatar?

Firmly rooted in the desert, Qatar has two temperatures: warm and hot. A lot (but not all) of Qatar’s tourism involves outdoor activities like dune bashing, the beaches, the Souq and The Corniche, so it’s best visited during cooler months, when temperatures are in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit.

November – March: Tourism is relatively light in Qatar, so it’s easy to visit during peak season and still avoid tourists to some extent. October and April are still on the hotter side, reaching averages of 90 Fahrenheit. Instead, visit between November and March, when averages range between the 70s and 80s. Note that most places in Qatar are heavily air conditioned, so keep that in mind for packing.

What currency do they use in Qatar?

Qatar uses Qatari Rials, and at the time of writing this post (February 2020), the rate was about USD $1 to QR 3.64. Credit cards are widely accepted and there are plenty of ATM machines for withdrawing cash. Exchange rates are pretty consistent throughout Doha, so you can easily change money at the airport, if you’d like.

What language is spoken in Qatar?

The  official language of Qatar is Arabic , but English is widely spoken, due to the high population of expats living in the country. You can easily get by speaking English, although it’s always nice to learn some Arabic phrases ahead of time, for fun.

Is Qatar Safe?

I always feel like I need to address this anytime I write about the Arab world because you know, the media sucks . The reality is that Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world. As in, many people don’t lock their front doors safe. Crime is virtually unheard of and as a woman, I would have no qualms about traveling here solo . So throw whatever stereotypes you have about The Middle East out the window and come visit for yourself.

Transportation in Doha

Doha recently opened an extensive  metro and bus system  with lines covering transport to most places around Doha. It’s super clean and efficient and takes you to the majority of the places on this list. If you’d like to visit some of the places outside of Doha, you have a few options:  renting a car , taking Uber / cabs, or booking tours. Driving in Doha is relatively straightforward in the sense that signs are bilingual and drivers generally follow the rules of the road. However, Google Maps is hit and miss due to ever-changing construction and if you want to do any desert excursions, you’ll need a 4×4 and a local who knows the road. Depending on how long you’ll be visiting, you may not need to rent a car.

So there you have it: the best Qatar itinerary for 3 days in Qatar. Whether you choose to spend all 3 days in Doha or get out and explore the desert (as you should), there’s definitely something awesome for everyone in this small country in The Middle East.

Tell me: What do you think of this Doha itinerary? Would you spend all your time in the city or go out and explore the rest of Qatar?

Destination Overview

Qatar’s unique culture, history, and attractions.

Nestled on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar is a mesmerizing blend of tradition and modernity, where time-honored customs coexist harmoniously with cutting-edge architecture. As you step foot on this enchanting land, prepare to be captivated by its unique culture and rich history.

Qatar boasts a deep-rooted Bedouin heritage, and you’ll find echoes of its nomadic past in the warm hospitality of its people, known as Qatari nationals. Embrace the opportunity to immerse yourselves in local customs, whether it’s sipping aromatic Arabic coffee in a traditional majlis (sitting area) or donning the elegant abayas and thobes that reflect the nation’s pride in its heritage.

But Qatar is not just a treasure trove of history; it’s a paradise for families seeking unforgettable experiences. With a plethora of family-oriented attractions, you can explore the awe-inspiring museums, embark on desert adventures, and witness the dazzling skyline from world-class observation decks.

Best Time to Visit and Weather Considerations

Timing is everything when planning a family vacation, and Qatar has seasons to suit every preference.

For mild weather and pleasant outdoor excursions, consider visiting during the winter months, between November and April.

During this period, temperatures average between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), making it an ideal time to explore outdoor attractions comfortably.

However, if you and your family adore the sun and don’t mind the heat, the summer months, from May to September, offer a unique experience. Embrace the warmth as you enjoy indoor attractions, cooling off at water parks, or venturing into the magnificent desert during cooler evenings.

Qatar itinerary – a bit of background

Qatar itinerary - the Pearl

I am not sure if I always had this habit or it kind of developed along with the blog, but every time I meet somebody new I automatically question them about the place they call home. So when I got the opportunity to find out more about tourism and things to do in Qatar, a place virtually unknown to me, I could not help it and set up what turned out to be a series of articles on this amazing country.

Of course, this also prompted the acquisition of a Qatar-themed reading list in preparation for what will surely be a cultural family travel Qatar itinerary.

I hope you know me well enough by now not to be surprised by my thoroughness and curiosity when it comes to a new destination. Here’s what I think is important to know about Qatar.

It is a peninsular Arab country, situated at the Persian Gulf between the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and insular Bahrain. Its dramatic relief of arid desert and dunes that roll down to the shoreline of the Persian Gulf is mostly flat (highest altitude is 103 meters).

The official religion is Islam, the country being ruled by a mixture of civil and Sharia (religious) law.

It has the highest per capita income in the world, and it is regarded as the most advanced Arab state for human development. Its booming economy is due to the world’s third-largest natural gas reserves and its oil fields. In 2022 Qatar will be the first Arab state to host the FIFA world cup championship.

Archaeological evidence suggests a rich and continuous habitation of the peninsula up to the 7th century AD when the conversion to Islam took place in the area. When Portugal took over the region in the 16th century the local prince Al-Hasa chose Ottoman leadership instead of the Portuguese one. World War I and the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire brought a British protectorate until 1971 when the country finally became independent. Nowadays Qatar is a unitary constitutional monarchy.

Tradition and modernism – interview with a local

So let’s find out more about things to do in Qatar and how tourism looks like in this country from  Serban Spirea . He is the type of person who enjoys his job and you can feel this in the open, dynamic, and friendly way in which he answers questions, be them related to real estate or not. He is a young entrepreneur from Romania who opened in 2015  FGREALTY  one of the fastest-growing luxury real estate companies in Qatar.

Qatar itinerary - arab market, souk

What do you think is the main incentive to visit Qatar?

This small country blends together the mystery and the culture of Muslims, the original Bedouins, and modernism brought by wealth and a large number of expatriates that inhabit it nowadays. Out of 2.7 million inhabitants, over 2.3 million are foreigners, and thus the face of the country changes at a fast pace, while it is at the same time deeply rooted in its centuries-old traditions. Expats quickly learn to follow a certain code of behavior out of respect for the Muslim population here. I find this a very fascinating cultural experience.

Which aspect do you personally find the most intriguing?

Diving for natural pearls is traditionally associated with Qatar

Imagine that only 50 years ago the country was inhabited by tribes of nomadic Bedouins who lived off their farms and relied on diving for natural pearls for their livelihood. Their culture was mostly orally transmitted. Performances of poetry/stories accompanied by traditional music with tambourines and small drums as well as original dances can still be appreciated every Friday (the free day in Qatar). Nowadays, Qatar is one of the fastest developing countries in the world and this can also be seen outside the real estate field. For example, alongside pearls, jewelry, and traditional Muslim handicrafts (carpets, textiles, calligraphy), contemporary art pieces are being traded very successfully here.

Is this why you decided to invest in Qatar?

New cities develop at a record time here, and the driving force for it is twofold. On the one hand, oil and natural gas are the main sources of income and this has drawn many expats here in search of work. Real estate in Qatar flourished as a consequence.  Even if foreigners are not allowed to buy land in Qatar, there are large and amazing developments built for expatriates, as there are special real estate development projects.

Qatar itinerary - building projects in the country, residential area

On the other hand, I decided to invest in Luxury Real Estate as more and more tourists are interested in what Qatar has to offer. The most famous example is the  Pearl in the capital Doha , one of the most fabulous contemporary architectural projects, expected to welcome over 45,000 people up to the end of this year (a.n. 2019). It is a man-made island with buildings that blend the Arabian architectural zest for opulence with state-of-the-art modernity and the first land to be available for freehold ownership by foreign nationals.

Qatar itinerary– practical information

What should one consider when planning a trip to qatar.

Qatar itinerary - the iconic skyline of the capital Doha

The best  time to visit  is in spring or autumn. Qatar has dry, hot weather, but during these seasons the temperatures are more pleasant. You should keep in mind that the workweek here is from Sunday to Thursday, and special opening times operate during the Ramadan fasting period. In solidarity with those fasting, you should only eat in public before sunrise or after sunset during Ramadan.

Qatar welcomes tourists and the citizens within 37 countries can travel to Doha and stay in Qatar for 30 days only passport based. The list of countries that can  travel to Qatar without a travel visa  is  here .

What should one expect upon arriving in Qatar?

Qatari are welcoming foreigners into their country, being one of the most inclusive countries on the Arabian Peninsula. Actually, a large number of expats is proof in this sense. However, a dress code must be obeyed in order to show respect to the locals. The general rule for both men and women is that your shoulders and knees should be covered in public spaces. As long as these rules of decency are followed, Qatar is a safe country even for solo female travelers.

Modesty and decency in mind, you can enjoy yourself as you would in any European country. The majority of locations accept credit card payments, with prices being in the range of those in Western Europe.  Alcohol  can be purchased only in places that hold a license, but generally, hotels do serve it. There is a wide range of high-quality restaurants and cafés. My personal recommendations are  Leila restaurant ,  Ethiopia restaurant , and  Kuminous Café.

For more places to eat in Qatar check out this food lover’s guide to Doha and the amazing reviews from Time Out Doha .

And wherever you go, take a taxi. As gas is so abundantly available here, this is the safest and most affordable means of transportation if you do not have your own car.

Where to stay in Qatar

The capital, Doha, is the main touristic destination in the country and where most people decide to base themselves while exploring Qatar.

Located in Al Wakrah, 9 km from the airport and 14 km from Doha, Souq Al Wakra Hotel Qatar By Tivoli pampers its guests with a fitness center, several restaurants, seaside access, a garden, and complimentary breakfast.

The luxurious Kempinski The Pearl , located on the pearl-shaped artificial island for which Doha is famous, is ideal for families who want to enjoy the many swimming facilities.

Doha Kempinski The Pearl

Across from the shores of the Arabian Gulf sits one of Doha’s newest five-star hotels – Saraya Corniche Hotel . It offers unparalleled luxury and plush comfort in the proximity of Doha’s most famous landmarks such as the waterside promenade (Corniche) , traditional market (Souq Wakif) , and the Museum of Islamic Arts.

For those looking for accommodation in the proximity of the airport, several affordable options are available, such as the Premier Inn Doha Airport.

1-4 Days Qatar Itinerary

The comprehensive Qatar itinerary below is based on hours of research following the interview with Serban. These included discussions with other travelers, web searches, as well as countless reading hours. However, we will keep improving it up to the last minute before our visit, thus please provide us with as much feedback as possible! It is highly appreciated!

Qatar itinerary - night skyline

Qatar itinerary day 1 – Doha

Any visit should start with a walk on  the Corniche , the city’s most famous waterside promenade. You can admire the traditional dhows boats alongside very modern yachts in the blue waters of the bay and take very cool photos of the West Bay business district from here. Make sure to come back here on any evening of your stay for the opportunity to admire the Doha skyline with neon lights, a sight that gives New York’s skyscrapers a run for their money.

You could at this point consider a city tour that includes a wooden dhow boat ride or a double-decker bus ride with a complimentary dhow tour to get a panoramic impression of the beautiful capital of Qatar!

Qatar itinerary - Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, boats dhows, skyline

If you walk on along the Corniche, you will reach the famous  Museum of Islamic Arts , that features the most exclusive collections of art from the entire Islamic world. Entrance to the museum is free and on your way out you should pay a visit to the beautiful MIA park that surrounds it. A Saturday afternoon market takes place here where many local products are sold.

At this point, it’s up to you if you decide to enjoy the traditional open-air market Souq Wakif for the afternoon or spend the rest of the day exploring other excellent museums such as the Qatar National Museum and the Msheireb Museums . These are located in four traditional homes and contain cultural and historic exhibits. Across the street is the Alkoot Fort , 1920s military fort now serving as a museum with Qatari handicrafts, photos, paintings & more.

Make sure to allocate enough time for the Souq Waqif traditional-style market  as this is the place to find spices, jewelry, handmade handicrafts, textiles, and local souvenirs. Here you can enjoy the traditional labyrinth bazaar with small shops whose wares tumble out on the pavement. If in need of a break, you can stop at one of the many excellent shisha lounges. It is also a pretty good choice for dinner. Sit at one of the pavements tables of Al Tawash restaurant and enjoy the traditional Qatari dishes while taking in the pulse of the market. Parisa Souq Waqif  is another option for dinner – a popular Persian restaurant with an amazingly decorated interior and very delicious food.

Qatar itinerary day 1 - Souq Wakif

Qatar itinerary day 2 – Doha – The Pearl

Spend the morning diving a bit more into Qatari culture. Depending on how much you’ve covered the previous day, consider a 4 hours cultural tour of Doha , or make sure the Grand Mosque and the Katara Cultural Village are on your list!

Katara Village is a cultural complex built to resemble a traditional Qatari village, named after the historical name of Qatar prior to the 18th century. Its highlights include the open amphitheater, opera house, cinema, art gallery, and even a children’s cultural center.

The newly built Grand Mosque , open in 2011, is an architectural fusion of traditional Arab style and modern features, including as many as 28 large domes. One of the sights usually overlooked by visitors, it is definitely worth a stop!

Your next stop is The Pearl, the country’s most impressive architectural project. Do not miss  the Qanat quarter , a waterfront village inspired by Venetian architecture. Here starts an amazing 4-hour food tour that gives you an overview of the eclectic character of The Pearl, from the luxury Porto Arabia yacht harbor to the busy center of Medina Centrale! Enjoy it!

Qatar itinerary day 2 - visit the luxury Porto Arabia yacht harbor

Qatar itinerary day 3 – secrets of the desert

Take a day trip outside of Doha. There are two places that immediately come to mind. The  Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum   – with objects collected by the Sheikh over the years, from vintage cars and a traditional Bedouin tent to old credit cards. A guided visit is recommended to make sense of it all. You can couple it with a stop at the camel racing track in this very interesting organized tour!

About an hour’s drive from Doha, the only UNESCO World Heritage site in the country is  Al Zubarah . This is an archaeological site where, in an interactive museum,  you can get a glimpse into the old way of life of the local nomadic tribes who lived off pearl diving before the discovery of oil in the area.  A comprehensive and original guided tour of North Qatar covers it alongside other notable sights in this part of the country.

The most popular activity is, however, to take a  desert safari to Khor Al Adaid  and there are plenty of tour operators who offer them. Camel riding and Bedouin-style meals are often included for a more authentic experience.

Qatar itinerary day 4 – Doha – a few more secrets

Make a worthwhile stop at the National Library , one of the country’s most impressive cultural achievements. Besides plenty of books in Arabic and English, there’s also a heritage historic book collection in Arabic that you can visit.

Shopping is one of the most important things to do in Qatar. You can now head to the  Villagio Mall , a luxurious shopping center inspired by the architecture of an Italian hill town that even features an indoor canal with gondolas.

Qatar itinerary day 4 - go for a gondola ride - Villagio Mall!

Hopefully, for a full experience of Qatar, you’ll still fit in a stop at Doha’s equestrian center  Al Shaqab . Dedicated to the famous Arabian horses, this facility is committed to preserving Qatar’s heritage by offering the highest standards in horse welfare, breeding, and equine education. Take a guided tour of their extensive and impressive grounds! It is totally worth it!

End your day in style with a dinner at an amazing Doha restaurant. The  Al Hubara Restaurant  at the Sheraton Grand, Nobu , or   Al Mourjan Restaurant   on the Corniche are all elegant, outstanding places for a memorable end of your Qatar itinerary!

Middle East latest: US blocks UN from recognising a Palestinian state after membership vote veto

The US has vetoed a motion that would see Palestine join the United Nations as a full member. The move essentially denies Palestine's recognition as a state in the eyes of the UN.

  • Analysis: How seriously should we take the nuclear rhetoric?

As we've been reporting this evening, the UN Security Council has not passed a resolution recommending Palestinian membership, after the US vetoed the motion.

These images show members discussing and voting on the motion, with Robert Wood, United States' ambassador to the UN, the only person to lift their hand when members were asked if they opposed the resolution.

Some reaction from Palestine now.

The Palestinian presidency has condemned the US veto of a Security Council draft resolution that recommended a full United Nations membership of a Palestinian state.

The presidency said in a statement the veto was "unfair, unethical and unjustified."

The deputy permanent observer of the state of Palestine to the UN said praised the 12 members who did vote for the motion: "Thank you to all those who rise to the historical moment."

"We are not deterred in our pursuit for Palestinian freedom and independence," Majed Bamya said.

The Israeli foreign minister has praised the US for exercising its right to veto a motion that would have seen Palestine become a member of the international organisation.

"I commend the United States for vetoing this shameful proposal, which was rejected today at the UN Security Council," Israel Katz said in the aftermath of the vote.

"It is outrageous that even half a year after the 7 October massacre, the UN Security Council failed to condemn Hamas horrific crimes," he added.

The US has vetoed a motion that would see Palestine join the United Nations as a full member.

While this shouldn't come as any great surprise, the motion has now been formally vetoed by a permanent member- meaning it cannot pass.

The move essentially denies Palestine's recognition as a state in the eyes of the UN.

Twelve countries voted in favour of granting full membership to Palestine, two abstained and the US voted against the motion.

The Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, is currently a non-member observer state at the UN - a position granted by the 193-member General Assembly in 2012.

Why did the US veto?

We received an explanation from a state department spokesman earlier today.

"Premature actions in New York (site of the UN headquarters), even with the best intentions, will not achieve statehood for the Palestinian people," Vedant Patel told reporters.

"Specifically, there are unresolved questions as to whether the applicant (Palestine) can meet criteria to be considered as a state," he added.

He pointed to Hamas's continued grip on power in the enclave as one of the principal reasons for Washington's refusal to back the motion.

"We've long called on the Palestinian Authority to undertake the necessary reforms to establish the attributes of readiness for statehood and note that Hamas, which is as you all know, a terrorist organisation is currently exerting power and influence in Gaza, which would be an integral part of the envisioned state in this resolution.

"And for that reason, the United States is voting 'no' on this proposed Security Council resolution."

A former Israeli prime minister believes that Iran has formally declared war on Israel, after a massive drone and missile attack at the weekend.

Ehud Olmert told Sky's  lead world news presenter  Yalda Hakim  he thought that "strangely or fortunately enough, the event on Saturday night turned out to be a total failure for Iran and a great success for Israel and allies".

Watch part of his interview here...

Protests in Tel Aviv calling for the immediate release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are continuing.

Pressure has been mounting on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu internally to secure the release of around 130 people still being held captive by the group.

But ceasefire talks have largely stalled after Hamas's repeated refusal to agree to fresh Israeli terms.

Building on our 5.34pm post, we've now received a readout of the US-Israeli meeting on a potential Rafah offensive.

"The two sides agreed on the shared objective to see Hamas defeated in Rafah," a White House statement said.

"US participants expressed concerns with various courses of action in Rafah, and Israeli participants agreed to take these concerns into account and to have further follow up discussions between experts, overseen by the SCG (strategic consultative group)," it added.

"Participants will meet again soon," it concluded.

Rafah is the only major city in Gaza yet to be the subject of a ground assault by Israeli troops, but hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians crammed into the city have still been subjected to airstrikes over the past few months.

Mr Biden has consistently urged Israel not to conduct a large-scale offensive in Rafah to avoid more Palestinian civilian casualties in Gaza, where Hamas-led health authorities say nearly 34,000 people have been killed since October last year.

Recent Israeli actions to allow more aid to get into Gaza are not enough and more needs to be done, the US state department has said.

Deputy spokesperson for the department, Vedant Patel, said the situation in Gaza was "dire" despite some progress being made.

"There has been some measurable progress that we've seen when it comes to humanitarian aid getting into Gaza," Mr Patel told a media briefing.

"But the circumstances within Gaza continue to be dire and more absolutely needs to be done."

By James Matthews , US correspondent

The Palestinian Authority first sought full membership at the United Nations in 2011.

If there hasn't been a right time for accession since then, that time certainly isn't now.

Such is the decisive view of the United States - decisive, because the US veto at the UN Security Council means it won't happen.

Membership would, effectively, recognise a Palestinian state.

As the arguments were laid out at the UN in New York, the American rationale was laid out in a state department briefing in Washington.

It was always complicated  -  now throw in the timing and circumstances.

Spokesperson Vedant Patel said: "Note that Hamas… a terrorist organisation, is currently exerting power and influence in Gaza which will be an integral part of the individual state in this resolution and, for that reason, the United States is voting 'no'."

US opposition had been well-trailed in the run-up to the chamber vote.

Its long-held position is that the UN isn't the place for such a move - that, while it supports a two-state solution in the Middle east, Palestinian statehood should be anchored in a deal negotiated with Israel.

They are words easily written, harder to realise.

The prospect of dialogue, let alone a deal, between Israel and the Palestinians is currently non-existent.

Israel's view is predominant in Joe Biden's thinking on matters Palestinian, and this is no different.

Israel's UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said: "If the Security Council recommends full membership for the Palestinian Authority that incites and funds terror with no control over its territory, it deserves to be called the UN's 'Terror Council' not 'Security Council."

It isn't a view you’d hear from Biden, publicly at least, but the US President doesn't need reminding of well-catalogued weakness of a Palestinian Authority seen as corrupt, unpopular and unable to wield the influence that Western diplomats wish it could.

The Palestinian view was put to the Security Council by envoy Dr Ziad Abu Amr.

He told members: "Admitting the state of Palestine to the UN would lift a portion of the historical injustice that successive generations of the Palestinian people have suffered and continue to suffer."

The view resonates with the bulk of his audience.

Not for the first time, the United States finds itself out of step with majority world opinion inside the UN Security Council chamber.

It almost certainly won't be the last.

In the shadow of growing conflict, a US president with enough on his plate is picking his fights carefully.

As we reported a short time ago, the US will veto a motion that promised to see Palestine join the United Nations as a full member (see 6.17pm post).

We've now received a confirmation from Washington and an explanation as to why from a state department spokesman.

"And for that reason, the United States is voting no on this proposed Security Council resolution."

The move, which has been widely expected from the Israeli ally, will effectively block the world body from recognising the Palestinian state.
