Monopoly Travel World Tour - contents

Game Contents

  • The gameboard looks shiny, so the dry inks put in there are erased easily.
  • Scottie the Dog - red
  • T-Rex - purple
  • Hazel the Cat - blue
  • Rubber Ducky - green
  • These destinations are the only properties in this game. They are like streets .
  • 10 Chance cards
  • These are like Community Chest .
  • NOTE: Be aware that the stamps put in there are permanent and cannot be erased.
  • They are made of cardboard.
  • $10 (44), $20 (45), $50 (30), $100 (21), $500 (14)
  • Total of 164 cardboard money bills.
  • NOTE: If run out or you are uncomfortable with the smaller cardboard money, you can “borrow” paper money from the other Monopoly game sets.
  • Made of cardboard (the same one as with the money).

There are no houses , no hotels , no railroads , and no utilities in this game.

Starting the Game [ ]

Choose someone to be the Banker.

  • The Banker is in charge of money, Destination cards, and auctions.

Each player selects a token (and its related stamp) to play. All tokens played will be placed on GO.

Each player starts with $1500.

  • Consisting of ten (10) $10 bills, five (5) $20 bills, two (2) $50 bills, two (2) $100 bills, and two (2) $500 bills.

All Chance and Travel Journal cards are shuffled and are placed facedown in their respective card draw deck.

The golden travel ticket will be placed on Free Parking.

  • That player is the only one with this ticket throughout a whole game.

All players will roll both dice to determine who goes first and the order of play.

  • The player with the highest number will go first. After a player completes their turn, the dice are handed over to another player on the left.

Gameplay [ ]

You roll the dice to get the number of board spaces to move with your token. When you move your token, hold on the bottom of your token .

  • Holding to the top (a character “statue”) may accidentally open the ink container of your token.

When you land on a board space, follow the instructions according to that space.

After completing an action on your turn, pass the dice to a player on your left.

However, if you roll a double, take another turn.

  • If you roll doubles three times in a row, you must go to Jail and you cannot take your third turn.

Monopoly Travel World Tour - destination card

Destination Title Deed card (front is the tour fees and a travel goal) (back is the info about a destination)

Destinations [ ]

The destinations are the only properties in this game. These destinations are the famous tourist attractions in the world. Destinations are equivalent to “streets” because they are in color sets .

Unowned [ ]

When you land on a destination that nobody owns, you must either buy or auction. You cannot decline both options.

If you decide to buy a destination, pay the amount shown on its board space. After paying, take its Title Deed with you to indicate ownership. As in most games, if you have enough money to buy but not the exact bill, the banker is allowed to make change.

Auction [ ]

If you don’t want to buy or you do not have enough money, that destination has to be put up for auction.

All players, including you , can bid. Bidding starts at $10, and any player can increase the bid by as little as $10. An auction will continue until no one is willing to increase the bid further. The highest bidder is paying for the highest bid, and they will take the auctioned Title Deed.

If no player is willing to bid in an auction, this auction will end without a bidder. The auctioned Title Deed will remain unowned in a Bank.

When you land on a destination but somebody owns it already, you may have to pay the fee.

NOTE: Landing on your own destination is like a rest space that you do not do anything. You cannot owe money to yourself. You cannot stamp either (unless that destination is your travel goal).

A fee is like “ rent ” in Monopoly. If you land on a destination that is owned by somebody else, that owner must ask you to pay a fee. If they do, pay them. If they don’t and the dice is passed, then you do not have to pay.

NOTE: There is an exception of paying a fee when you land on a destination that is your travel goal.

Color Set [ ]

If you own all destinations in 1 color group, the fees will be doubled.

  • A doubled fee is the highest amount of fee in this game because there are no houses or hotels to build.

Travel Goal [ ]

A travel goal is the most important part of this Monopoly edition.

Each destination’s Title Deed has a travel goal indicating that you have to go to another destination to visit also.

When you land on a destination that is your travel goal, you use your stamp on its board space indicating that you visit it. Your stamp will stay there for the rest of the game. Only 1 stamp will be placed in a single destination.

  • A bonus move is an extra move without using the dice and therefore does not count against rolling “three times in a row”.

If you achieve your travel goal, you are one step closer to winning the game .

When you land on a destination that is owned by someone else but it is also your travel goal , you do not have to pay the fee.

  • This works like “rent dodge” in some Monopoly editions (but without using a card).

Board Spaces [ ]

There are 22 such board spaces about destinations. Players can own and visit these destinations.

  • This is the exact same number as the number of streets in regular Monopoly.

In this travel edition, the destination board spaces are the only ones that a player can stamp for visiting their travel goal. Only 1 stamp will be occupied on a destination and it will not be erased for a game.

Flight Spaces [ ]

There are 2 types of flight board spaces. A flight space allows you to go to any destination for a fee.

You have an option to take a flight. If you don’t want to, you do not pay and you stay on a flight board space.

NOTE: Since you fly directly to a chosen destination, DO NOT collect $200 if you "pass" GO.

Local Flight [ ]

You have an option to pay $100 to travel to any destination before the next flight board space .

EXAMPLE: You land on a 1st local flight space between GO and “Just Visiting” / Jail. When you pay $100 and take a flight, you choose a destination in a light blue or pink color set.

There are 4 local flight board spaces.

  • They are in the same spots as the railroads.

Long-Distance Flight [ ]

You have an option to pay $200 to travel to any destination in the whole board .

It costs more (the same as a salary for GO) to take a long-distance flight, but it has all the destinations selectable.

There are 2 long-distance flight board spaces.

  • They are in the same spots as the utilities.

Pick up the top card from the Chance card deck. Do on what it says on that card. After using it, return it to the bottom of the Chance card deck (facedown).

If a Chance card says “If you pass GO” , you can collect $200. However, if a Chance card does not have this phrase, DO NOT collect $200 (a general rule for this edition).

Travel Journal [ ]

Pick up the top card from the Travel Journal card deck. Read on what it says on that card. If there is an empty circle , then you can stamp on it. After using it, return it to the bottom of the Travel Journal card deck (facedown).

A stamp will be there forever , so it is impossible to remove. Travel Journal is designed to last a lifetime, so a person that has recorded a journal will be with them forever. This works the same way for Travel Journals.

If there are no more empty circles to stamp, then you cannot stamp anymore. Just do on what it says on a card.

Travel Insurance [ ]

When you land in there, pay $200.

It is in the very same spot and function as the Income Tax .

Travel Guide Fee [ ]

When you land in there, pay $100.

It is in the very same spot and function as the Luxury Tax .

Jail / Just Visiting [ ]

This is just a resting space. Place your token in the “Just Visiting” section (outside of Jail).

Free Parking [ ]

At the beginning of a game, there is the Golden Travel Ticket placed on this corner space. Whoever player lands on Free Parking first will be the one to get this ticket. That player is the only user of this ticket.

After the only ticket is taken, Free Parking is just a resting space for the remainder of a game.

Golden Travel Ticket [ ]

This ticket will be used to go to any destination (unowned or owned). It is a single-use ticket.

When a player has this ticket, they can use it only on their turn. They can use it before rolling the dice or after completing an action (before passing the dice to a next player).

Once a ticket is used, it will be discarded for the rest of a game.

  • NOTE: The Golden Travel Ticket is non-negotiable , meaning that it cannot be sold or traded for anything else (including money).

Go to Jail [ ]

When you land on this corner space, you must go to Jail. Place your own token in the “Jail” portion of the opposite corner space. Your turn ends immediately. DO NOT collect $200 for passing GO.

  • Even though you roll doubles but landing on “Go to Jail”, you CANNOT take another turn.

When you reach this corner space, collect $200 from the Bank.

You go to Jail when one of the 2 events happen to you:

  • You land on the “Go to Jail” corner space.
  • You roll doubles 3 times in a row.

NOTE: There are no cards (both Chance and Travel Journal) that say “Go directly to Jail”.

Getting out of Jail [ ]

You can get out of Jail in any of these 2 ways:

  • If you roll doubles while using the (a) option, you can take another turn.
  • If successful, get out of Jail but move according to a successful roll (do not re-roll).
  • However, you cannot take another turn while using the (b) option.
  • You have 3 attempts. If you fail to roll doubles on your 3rd attempt, pay $50 and move according to that 3rd roll (do not re-roll).

NOTE: There are no “Get Out of Jail Free” cards in this game because there are only 10 cards for Chance and 10 for Travel Journal.

Deals & Trades [ ]

A player can buy, sell, or swap destinations from/to other players at any time (not only on their own turn). A destination can be dealt for another destination or cash.

Although a destination has exchanged hands, that destination’s travel goal will not change . A player’s stamp in that travel goal will not be erased .

  • EXAMPLE: Before trading, you have a destination and you meet a travel goal from that destination’s card. Later, you give away that destination for money. Your own stamp in that travel goal will be kept there and cannot be erased, so a new owner of that destination cannot meet a travel goal and thus cannot replace a stamp.

If a travel goal is not met because its board space is empty, a new owner can stamp on that travel goal.

Debt & Bankruptcy [ ]

If you owe money to a player (for a visit fee) or to the Bank (for travel fee, Chance card, or Travel Journal card) but you do not have enough money, pay all of your remaining money.

You will leave with no money, so you are technically bankrupt. However, bankruptcy will NOT get you out of a game . Therefore, you can still play.

  • You do not have to sell your destination(s) to raise money in order to get out of debt or bankruptcy.
  • All of your stamps will not be erased, even in an event of your bankruptcy.

Stamps and Ink [ ]

Monopoly Travel World Tour - stamps

Four different stamps with token icons: Red - Scottie ; Purple - T-Rex ; Blue - Hazel ; Green - Rubber Ducky

All tokens have stamps on the bottom. The ink on the stamps are dry erasable, so a stamp can be easily removed from the board. Just pop off the bottom of the token to use the stamp, and place the cover back on the token to prevent the ink from drying out.

If you land on a destination that is your travel goal and it is blank, you stamp onto that destination on the dry-erasable gameboard.

  • Unless someone else has already stamped that destination; in that case, you cannot overwrite that stamp already placed in.

After a game is over, erase all the stamps placed on the dry-erasable gameboard with a paper towel.

When you land on a Travel Journal space and you pick up a card that has a blank circle, you will stamp on only one of them.

  • If there is no blank circle remaining on a card, you cannot stamp on that card.

Stamps that are in Travel Journal cards cannot be erased at all because these cards are not dry-erasable.

Be careful with the stamp & ink because it can stain clothing, furniture, surfaces, and skin. Ink on clothes or on surfaces may be difficult to get rid of cleanly. Do not touch the ink or the stamp pad.

If only the kids (at least 8 years old as required) are playing, adult supervision is required to avoid a kid misusing ink.

When a stamp has run out of ink, you can use a dry-erasable ink cartridge using a same color (recommended). Never use pen ink, printer ink, or permanent ink since an inappropriate ink is impossible to remove cleanly and making a big mess on the gameboard (and on game pieces also).

End of the Game [ ]

The game will end when a player has stamped 4 travel goals . That player will be the winner.

  • There is no need to bankrupt all other opponents, to achieve the highest score (e.g. Monopoly City ), to reach the objective of a game (e.g. Monopoly Empire ), or to reach GO to end the game (e.g. Monopoly Space ). When you stamp your 4th travel goal, you will win immediately.

By completing every milestone, you can claim 15,180 dice, 3,500 Fountain Partners coin tokens , and several sticker packs of various qualities. These extra rewards can propel you through other events, making using them and daily tournaments worthwhile.

How to score points in the Monopoly GO Pillar Prize Tour event

Scoring points during the Pillar Prize Tour event requires landing on pickup tiles around your Monopoly board. Each tile grants two points , which increase depending on your dice multiplier. Although rolling only one dice gives you two points, raising your multiplier to 20, 50, or over 100 will increase this value, allowing you to score hundreds of points, depending on how many dice you’re willing to use.

Since the Fountain Partners event is ongoing, you’ll find coin tokens mixed in with the bunch. Watch for these tokens, as they’re useful for giving you points toward additional prizes. Monopoly Teams Up With Metallica for World Tour Edition

Newest edition of Metallica-inspired board game celebrates the band’s record-breaking 2013 world tour

Metallica Monopoly Board

There hasn’t been much to celebrate in 2020, but leave it to one of the world’s biggest bands to find something to cheer about. Metallica has re-teamed with Monopoly for an all-new “World Tour” edition of the timeless board game, nine years after their first partnership in 2011.

So what exactly is Metallica celebrating that’s worthy of a new game? For starters: their time on the road and their many accolades, which includes their record-breaking 2013 tour that made them the only band to ever perform on all seven continents. That milestone is reflected in this new edition of Monopoly, with collectible tokens representing iconic destinations in Asia, Australia, Antartica and beyond. But it’s also reflected in the game as a whole.

Metallica’s newest Monopoly game includes tokens that allow you to purchase properties like arenas and stadiums. Fans can also choose from an assortment of Metallica-inspired player tokens — including Lady Justice, the Death Magnetic coffin, the Ride the Lightning electric chair, the Master of Puppets cross, the Metal Up Your Ass toilet and the Scary Guy. And as a reward for buying all that property, you get everything you’d collect if you were able to be at a concert in 2020: guitar picks, drumsticks and snake pit passes.

The new game is a smart way to fill the concert-sized hole in your life, especially if you add in some sweet Metallica music along with your gameplay. Plus, with travel cautions and slimmed-down family gatherings, what else are we going to do this holiday season? Monopoly is pretty much the ideal family game for all ages — not to mention, one that you can get really competitive with.

And for those fans who loved the first edition of Metallica Monopoly and are eagerly awaiting the chance to collect this second one? You just found the newest thing to add to your holiday wish list.

Monopoly Travel World Tour Board Game: Rules and Instructions for How to Play

Looking for a specific Monopoly Travel World Tour rule? | Setup | Playing the Game | Board Spaces | Trading With Other Players | Can’t Pay | Winning the Game | FAQ | Components |

The objective of Monopoly Travel World Tour is to move around the board and reach four of your travel goals before the other players.

  • Choose a player to be the Banker. The Banker is responsible for the Bank’s money, unowned Destination Cards, and overseeing auctions. The Banker can play the game, but they must keep their money separate from the Bank’s money.
  • 10 – 10M
  • 5 – 20M
  • 2 – 50M
  • 2 – 100M
  • 2 – 500M

Starting Money

  • Each player chooses a player token and places it on the GO space.
  • Make sure the board has been completely erased/wiped off from the previous game. You can wipe off the board with a clean cloth.
  • Place the golden travel ticket on the Free Parking space.
  • Shuffle the Travel Journal cards and place them on the corresponding space on the gameboard.
  • Shuffle the Chance cards and place them on the corresponding space on the gameboard.
  • Each player rolls the dice. The player that rolls the highest number starts the game. Play will move left/clockwise throughout the game.

Setup for Monopoly Travel World Tour

How to Play Monopoly Travel World Tour

You will begin your turn by rolling the two dice. The number you roll on the dice determines how many spaces you will move your player token. You will move your player token clockwise around the board.

Rolling the Dice

You will then take an action based on the space that you landed on. See the Monopoly Travel World Tour Board Spaces section below for details on what each space does.

If you ended up rolling doubles, you will get to take another turn. You will roll the dice, move your playing piece, and take the action corresponding to the space that you land on. If you roll doubles three times in a row, you will immediately move your playing piece to jail. You will not get to take your third turn.

Rolling Doubles

Your turn will then end. You will pass the dice to the player on your left. They will then take their turn.

Monopoly Travel World Tour Board Spaces

The space you land on determines what action you will take on your turn.

Unowned Destinations

If you land on an unowned destination space, you will decide whether you want to purchase it, or put it up for auction.

If you decide to purchase the destination, pay the price printed on the space to the Bank. You will then take the corresponding destination card from the Bank.

Unowned Destination

Each destination card in the game has a travel goal printed on the bottom of the card. On a future turn you want to visit this location in order stamp the space.

Destination Card

If you don’t want to purchase the destination, it will immediately be put up for auction. Bidding starts at 10M. There is no turn order so players can raise the bid at any time. You must raise the bid by at least 10M. When no one else is willing to raise the bid, the player that bids the most pays the Bank the corresponding amount. They will then take the destination card from the Bank.

If no one wants to bid on a destination, the auction ends with no one acquiring the destination. The destination card stays with the bank.

Completing a Travel Goal

Should a player ever acquire a destination that has the travel goal of one of their other destination cards, they can start their next turn moving to the corresponding space. They will then stamp the space to note that they completed the corresponding travel goal. They will then take the rest of their turn as normal.

Complete A Travel Goal With Destination Cards

Owned Destinations

When you land on a destination owned by another player, the owner may ask you to pay the tour fee. If they ask you to pay the tour fee, you must pay it. The one exception is if the destination is one of your travel goals. If it is one of your travel goals, you do not have to pay the tour fee.

Owing A Tour Fee

If the owner owns all of the destinations of the corresponding color, they can charge the higher rate printed on the card.

Owning A Monopoly

Should the owner of a destination not ask you to pay before the next player rolls the dice, you do not have to pay them the tour fee.

GO Space

When you pass or land on GO you will collect 200M from the Bank.

Just Visiting Space

Just Visiting

Should you land on the Just Visiting space, you will take no special action. Make sure you place your piece on the Just Visiting section of the space. Your turn then ends.

Travel Insurance Space

Travel Insurance

You will pay the Bank the amount printed on the space.

Travel Guide Fee Space

Travel Guide Fees

Free Parking Space

Free Parking

At the beginning of the game you will place the golden travel ticket on the Free Parking space. The first player to land on the Free Parking space gets to take the ticket.

Free Parking Space with Ticket

At any point in the game (during their turn) the player that takes the ticket can move to any destination space on the board. After the ticket is used, it is returned to the box.

Gold Ticket in Monopoly Travel World Tour

After the ticket is taken, any players that land on Free Parking receive no special action.

Chance Space

When you land on a Chance space, you will take the top card from the Chance deck.

You will read the card out loud and take the corresponding action. The card is then returned to the bottom of the Chance deck.

Chance Card

If you pass the GO space due to a Chance card, you will not collect the 200M unless the card specifically says you can.

Go to Jail Space

When you land on the Go To Jail space or roll doubles three times in a row, you will immediately move to the jail space. You will not collect 200M for passing GO. Your current turn ends immediately.

In Jail Space

While in jail you can still collect tour fees, receive benefits from Travel Journey cards, bid during auctions, and trade with other players.

There are three different ways to get out of jail.

First you can pay 50M to the Bank at the start of your turn. You will then roll the dice and take your normal turn.

Second you can play a Get Out of Jail Free card at the start of your turn. You can use a card that you acquired, or you can purchase a card from another player. After you use the card, place it on the bottom of the corresponding deck. You will then roll the dice and take your normal turn. Note: My new copy of Monopoly Travel World Tour did not have any Get Out of Jail Free cards. I am not sure if this is a production error and my copy was missing the Get Out of Jail Free cards, or the official instructions included this rule despite it never actually being able to be applied.

Finally you can roll the dice. If you roll doubles, you will leave jail. The number you roll will be used to move around the board. You can try to roll doubles for three turns. If you don’t roll doubles on your third roll, pay 50M to the bank and use the number you rolled to move around the board.

Get Out of Jail Options

Local Flights

When you land on one of these spaces you can choose to go on a flight. If you pay 100M to the Bank, you can immediately move your piece to any destination space between your current space and the next flight space. You will then take the action corresponding to the space you landed on.

Local Flight Example

Long-distance Flights

Long-distance flights are more powerful than local flights. If you pay 200M to the Bank, you can immediately move to any destination space on the entire gameboard. If you pass Go while moving to the space though, you will not collect 200M. When you reach your destination, you will take the action corresponding to the space.

Long Distance Flight Example

Travel Journal

When you land on this space, you will take the top card from the Travel Journal deck. You will read the card out loud and do as it says.

Travel Journal Card

The Travel Journal cards will ask you to stamp one of the empty spaces on the bottom of the card. The number of spaces open on the card can very. If there is an empty space left on the card, you will use your stamp on one of the empty spaces. These stamps stay on the card forever. By stamping a card, you will receive its benefits/negatives in future games.

Stamping a Travel Journal Card

After taking the corresponding action you will return the card to the bottom of the corresponding deck.

Trading With Other Players

At any time in the game you can agree to trade with another player in the game. You may buy, sell or swap destination cards, and/or Get Out of Jail Free cards. The players in the deal can decide what they think is fair. If the players involved in the trade all agree to it, the trade is completed.

Only one player may stamp a destination space during the game. If you trade a destination card with a travel goal that you completed/stamped, the player you traded the card to can’t also stamp the same space.

Can’t Pay

When you owe money to the Bank or another player, you need to pay as much as you can. If you can’t pay the full cost though, you remain in the game and don’t have to pay the rest that you owe. There is no bankruptcy in Monopoly Travel World Tour and you can’t mortgage properties.

Winning Monopoly Travel World Tour

The game ends immediately after a player has stamped their fourth travel goal. This player has won the game.

Winning Monopoly Travel World Tour

Before putting the game away, make sure all of the ink has been wiped off of the gameboard. Also make sure the caps are securely on each of the token stamps to prevent the ink from drying out.

We are waiting for the next Golden Blitz of the Making Music season, find details of all previous Golden Blitz events for this season and our predictions for the next Golden Blitz in April on Monopoly Go .

The new Monopoly Go season, Making Music , is now underway. Follow that link to find details of all stickers and collections that will be available. Plus details of some of the special tokens and shields that you can get for completing all or part of the collection.

In Monopoly Go there are various types of events, we have classified them as follows:

  • Season Event - This is the main long duration sticker collecting event, usually they last from about 30-90 days.
  • Main Milestone Event - These events appear as a banner in the top center of the game board. They usually last between two and four days and consist of between 40-50 milestone levels each one with a different reward. Find out which one is currently running at the top of this page, and click through on the link there to find out the rewards, milestones and our best tips to get points for that current event.
  • Tournaments - These events usually last for one or two days, you can find the current tournament on the Monopoly Go game board located as one of the icons on the right of the screen. They always involve landing on a Railroad and playing either Shutdown or Bank Heist in order to get points. Like the main milestone event there are a series of milestones, usually 25 or 30, each giving a reward. But there is also a leaderboard reward at the end of the event which depends on where you finish in your group which usually consists of 50 or 100 players.
  • Special Events - These are other reward based events that don't fall into the above classifications such as Peg-E Prize Drop , or one of the many treasure digging events such as Jungle Treasures , Moonlight Treasures or Egyptian Treasures. These usually appear on the game every two or three weeks and usually last about five days. It's great to play Monopoly Go when these events are active as it gives another way to win rewards while the main milestone event and tournament are also running.
  • Golden Blitz - Golden Blitz occurs sporadically during a season. When the Golden Blitz's start is dependent upon the length of the season and how long there is left, but when they get going there is usually a gap of between two and seven days between each one. GBs are the only time when you can trade gold stickers in the game, so they are important to look out for. Here is out Golden Blitz schedule , where we look out for these events and record each one.
  • Sticker Boom - This is another important event to look out for, usually lasting for about 20 hours, and occurring more or less every seven to ten days, Sticker Boom will increase by at least 50% the number of stickers you receive when you open a pack. When a Sticker Boom is predicted or active, we'll let you know on this page at the top.

Some events such as the main events and tournaments we know the exact dates and times for but the daily flash boost events are predictions and may or may not occur and at different times.

New events are literally added every day and we maintain this page at least daily, sometimes, multiple times throughout the day as new events start and old ones finish.

Events are a great way to win dice and sticker packs but you need to go into these events with some strategy, here are some general tips picked up from playing Monopoly Go since it launched.

It's important to know when events starts and finish and when flash boost events are predicted to start, this way you can work out the best times of the day to play in order to take advantage of event overlaps and the flash boosts that you are most interested in.

When there are multiple events happening, work out which tiles on the board are good for you to land on to score points, then only use your multiplier when you have the best chances of landing on one of those tiles. Don't waste your multiplier by going round the board with low probability opportunities using a high multiplier.

By this I mean use small multipliers when you there is little chance of landing on an event square on the next roll, then when you come to a point on the board where there is the highest probability that you will land on an event square on the next throw, crank your multiplier up to it's max.

Boosting the multiplier when approaching a cluster of event squares

This is actually a really good technique, it doesn't always work, but you'll stand the best chance of conserving your dice as well as landing on an event square while you have your highest available multiplier.

Target hit!

As you can see from the screenshots above we needed a 3,5,7 or 9 to hit an event square, or 11 would have been good to hit the square for the tournament event that was also running.

The probability of hitting one of those numbers when of of those 5 would be been good is actually 50% so it was a great opportunity to increase the multiplier and try to get a good roll. That time it worked out well and got me 200 points in the event.

Don't try to score well in every tournament, you'll just get put into more difficult groups, score bad in some to get a more favorable group in the next tournament or the one after.

More events I am sure will pop up from time to time, we'll be on the look out for these and will add to this article when we see new events.

Justice Dept. to hit concert promoter Live Nation with antitrust lawsuit

The Justice Department plans to file an antitrust lawsuit against concert promoter Live Nation, people familiar with the investigation confirmed Tuesday.

The specific allegations remain unclear, and the timing of a lawsuit is uncertain. The Justice Department declined to comment.

But performers, politicians, scholars, rival promoters and other ticket sellers have argued that Live Nation wields far too much power in the live entertainment industry, with the ability to withhold the best shows from venues that do not use the company’s Ticketmaster service.

Public criticism peaked in November 2022 after Ticketmaster’s website crashed under extraordinary demand for tickets to pop star Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. At that time, the Justice Department was investigating the company .

In the view of critics, Live Nation and its ticketing platform have achieved outsize market dominance that harms consumers through exorbitant fees, dynamic pricing and a poor customer experience. A Live Nation official rejected those criticisms during a January 2023 hearing in the Senate, as lawmakers from both sides of the aisle accused the company of wielding “monopolistic control.”

The company has denied that it is a monopoly and pushed back against allegations that it punishes non-Ticketmaster venues.

“Ticketmaster has more competition today than it has ever had, and the deal terms with venues show it has nothing close to monopoly power,” Live Nation said in a statement Tuesday.

In June, Live Nation agreed to list its ticketing fees upfront at its venues amid President Biden’s broad push to end excessive fees across an array of industries. In 2019, Live Nation agreed to extend court oversight of its 2010 merger with Ticketmaster after an investigation that found the company “repeatedly” violated the terms of its merger. The company also agreed to several clarifications to the court-monitored agreement, including that Live Nation could not threaten to withhold concerts from a venue if organizers used a ticket vendor other than Ticketmaster.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the Justice Department’s intention to file an antitrust lawsuit.

The federal government could file charges narrowly related to the Ticketmaster merger agreement or bring a bigger case related to Live Nation’s perceived market dominance, said Daniel McCuaig, a partner at Cohen Milstein’s antitrust practice and a former trial lawyer with the Justice Department’s antitrust division.

Depending on what charges are filed, the government could seek to unwind the Ticketmaster merger, McCuaig said. He noted that the Justice Department has sought such a remedy in its case against Google and digital ad business .

“This DOJ has been more aggressive than previous administration DOJs about looking at old mergers and deciding that they may have made a mistake in letting something through previously that could now be unwound with a successful antitrust suit,” McCuaig said.

“ It looks like big-game hunting on a monopolization theory,” he added. “And monopolization cases are cases that this administration has not shied away from bringing .”
