Why Is the MLB Playing in South Korea Ahead of Opening Day? All About the MLB World Tour

Major League Baseball kicked off its regular season with the Seoul Series, a two-game set played by the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres on March 20

Baseball season is in full swing (well, sort of).

Major League Baseball kicked off its regular season in South Korea with a game played by the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres on March 20 ahead of the MLB's official Opening Day on March 28.

The two-day set played in Korea is part of the MLB's Seoul Series, marking one of the four international stops the league is making over the course of the season. Known as the MLB World Tour, the schedule also includes stops in Mexico City, London and the Dominican Republic.

Despite the two games being played overseas ahead of the official Opening Day in the United States, they do count towards both the Dodgers and Padres regular season record. However, upon the team's return, they each have two spring training games prior to Opening Day that don't count.

The MLB's regular season start in South Korea has unsurprisingly been a hot topic due to the schedule alone, but players have also topped headlines — with Shohei Ohtani specifically tied to a major controversy.

The former Los Angeles Angels superstar — who made his Dodgers debut in Korea after signing a  $700 million, 10-year contract with the team — is reportedly the victim of "massive theft" from his interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, who allegedly used his money for illegal gambling. Mizuhara was fired on March 20.

"The Dodgers are aware of media reports and are gathering information. The team can confirm that interpreter Ippei Mizuhara has been terminated. The team has no further comment at this time," a representative for the Dodgers said, per  MLB.com .

The MLB kicked off its regular season with the Seoul Series in South Korea on March 20, which saw the Dodgers win 5-2 over the Padres. The two-day set, played at the Gocheok SkyDome, wraps on March 21.

The Seoul Series marks the ninth time that the MLB season has opened outside the United States and Canada, and the first international host venue since Tokyo in 2019. The Seoul Series also marks the first MLB game played in South Korea.

The last international game played by the Dodgers was against the Padres in Mexico in 2018. The Seoul Series will also be the Los Angeles team's second Opening Day overseas after the 2014 season opener in Australia.

The Padres played internationally in 2023 during the Mexico City Series, so the Seoul Series marks their second straight season playing abroad. Like the Dodgers, the San Diego team played an Opening Day abroad — but in the inaugural international season opener in 1999.

What is the MLB World Tour?

The MLB World Tour was created in an increased effort to bring the joy of baseball to fans across the globe. The first international Opening Game was held in 1999, played between the Colorado Rockies and the Padres in Monterrey, Mexico.

"Major League Baseball is incredibly excited for this extensive slate of international games in 2024," Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement . "Our recent efforts have produced strong enthusiasm around the globe, and we look forward to building on that foundation... We are thrilled that our fans across four different countries outside the United States and Canada will have the opportunity to see the game’s stars."

The four stops on the 2024 MLB World Tour include Seoul, Mexico City, London and the Dominican Republic. The first three cities will host an international regular season series, while the D.R. hosted a pair of spring training games on March 9 and March 10 in Santo Domingo.

“Players have a deep interest in growing baseball around the world. No matter where they come from, players are linked by a passion for our game that transcends different languages, cultures, and nationalities,” said Tony Clark , the executive director of the MLB Players Association. "We are excited to expand our international presence in new communities and celebrate the game we all love.”

When is MLB Opening Day?

MLB Opening Day officially kicks off on Thursday, March 28, with games played by all 30 teams across the United States. Up first is the New York Mets against the Milwaukee Brewers who face off at 1:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field, New York.

Most of the games will be played in the afternoon, including Phillies-Braves, Dodgers-Cardinals and Astros-Yankees. The Texas Rangers will celebrate their 2023 World Series title before hosting the Chicago Cubs at 7:35 p.m. ET at Globe Life Field.

MLB's Opening Night game will be broadcast on ESPN with MLB livestreams available. Plus, most will be viewable on the regional sports networks affiliated with each baseball club.

World reacts to massive MLB World Tour announcement

MLB is going on a World Tour. The league announced several matchups set to take place outside of the U.S. and Canada in 2024.

MLB World Tour

Major League Baseball will take its World Tour to another level in 2024. While an MLB game was earmarked for London again, that’s not all the league has planned. MLB made significant news on Wednesday with a massive announcement that they plan on going on a ‘World Tour.’

“MLB will take its MLB World Tour to four different countries outside the United States and Canada throughout 2024,” The Comeback’s Jessica Kleinschmidt tweeted. Kleinschmidt included the key details: That MLB will travel to England, Mexico again, and then also to the Dominican Republic and South Korea.

In March, the D.R. will host two spring training games between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. The games will take place on March 10 and 11. Then, the Los Angeles Dodgers will play the San Diego Padres twice in Seoul, South Korea on March 20 and 21.

The previously announced London series between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies were re-affirmed, as was the return of the Mexico Series. 2024’s edition will feature the Colorado Rockies and the Houston Astros.

Taking the game around the globe is an easy move for MLB to make, so doing it is an easy way to get a good reaction. That they’re going to unique places like the Dominican Republic for spring training games and South Korea will make for even more excitement. The D.R. game, in particular, will be fun, as since it’s knee-deep into spring training, players who might not otherwise get an opportunity to make a mark will have that launching pad.

The sports world reacted to MLB’s massive announcement.

Love this. Growing the game. Want to see more games in London and Europe as a whole. Germany or the Netherlands next? I want to see the @Reds play somewhere overseas 🔥 https://t.co/g6YqGALyEQ — Mike Oxlong (@MikeOxlongSFC) July 12, 2023

The 2024 MLB World Tour was announced by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association Wednesday.

London, Mexico City, Seoul, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic during Spring Training will each host two-game series’ in 2024. London and Mexico City will return as host cities for the second consecutive season.

The stadiums where games will be played are Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the home of the Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido franchises of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana; Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu in Mexico City, the home of the Diablos Rojos del Mexico of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol; and London Stadium, the home of the West Ham United Premier League soccer club. A venue in Seoul has yet to be announced.

Seoul has two stadiums that serve as home to three teams in the Korea Baseball Organization. Jamsil Stadium, which is home to the Doosan Bears and LG Twins, is outdoors, though Major League Baseball could also play in the Gocheok Sky Dome, which hosted a pool round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

This Seoul Series will be the first time Major League Baseball has hosted a regular season game in South Korea. The Seoul Series will be the ninth time that Major League Baseball has started the regular season outside of the United States and Canada.

The last time the Dominican Republic hosted a Spring Training game was on March 7, 2020, when the Detroit Tigers took on the Minnesota Twins at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal shortly before the COVID-19 Pandemic shut down baseball.

The Dodgers and the Padres are playing each other outside of the United States for the second time. The first time was a three-game series at Estadio Beisbol de Monterrey from May 4-6 of the 2018 regular season.

The Padres played against the Mets during the 1996 season in MLB’s first international regular season series.

The Padres will play in their fifth international regular season series, the most of any Major League team, when they take the field on opening day 2024 in Seoul.

Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association agreed to schedule up to 24 regular season games and 16 Spring Training contests spreading throughout Latin America, Asia, and Europe over the course of the most recent Collective Bargaining Agreement, which expires after the 2026 regular season.

Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association also formed the World Tour program during negotiations for the Collective Bargaining Agreement during the offseason and work stoppage of March 2022.

Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, will also host a neutral site game between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants on June 24, 2024.

MLB also plans to have a regular season series in Paris during 2025.

Here's what's new at Dodger Stadium for the 2024 Season

A s the 2024 Major League Baseball season unfolds, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been the talk of the sport since the World Series concluded last October.

The new darlings of baseball, the Dodgers dominated the offseason by signing star players Shohei Ohtani , Yoshinobu Yamamoto , and Teoscar Hernandez . They made moves to improve along the margins as well.

As the Dodgers have made improvements to their personnel and product on the field, they have also done so off the field. Especially, when it comes to stadium renovations and fan experiences.

With the eyes of the world---and especially Japan--upon them, the organization has made a wave of new enhancements to the third oldest stadium in MLB , turning it into a vibrant hub that rolls out the red carpet for fans from all corners of the world, especially those that flow from the Land of the Rising Sun .

From cultural tributes to technological innovations and new culinary delights, the Dodgers have something for everyone who walks through the front door of what the organization affectionately calls "Blue Heaven on Earth."

Here's a closer look at what's in store for fans at the majestic, historic, and culturally diverse destination spot:

Japanese Stone Lantern: A Symbol of Friendship and History

March 26 marked a significant moment as the Dodgers unveiled a treasured relic from their past, the Japanese stone lantern gifted in 1965. Positioned prominently on the Top Deck, this eight-foot, 3,921-pound Kasuga-style lantern carries a rich narrative. Presented by Japanese sports columnist Sotaro Suzuki, a member of the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame, the lantern embodies the enduring bond between the Dodgers and Japanese baseball culture. Fans can now admire and capture the essence of this historical artifact, adding a touch of cultural depth to their stadium experience.

Cultural Inclusivity: Welcoming Fans from Across the Globe

Acknowledging the global appeal of the Dodgers, the team has taken steps to ensure a welcoming environment for fans traveling from overseas. Fan Services stations throughout the stadium now offer translator devices, facilitating seamless communication and enhancing the overall fan experience. Additionally, multi-lingual signage adorns fan-facing areas, embracing diversity and inclusivity at Dodger Stadium.

Throughout the year, the stadium has always offered expansive tours of the historical venue, including additional options on game days. Dodger Stadium offers both pregame tours and VIP tours but as a bonus this year, as part of their catering to diverse fan interests and providing insights into the rich history and architecture of Dodger Stadium, they now offer tours in Spanish and Japanese, which run four days per week with two different time slots.

Dodgers 365: Year-Round Engagement Beyond Baseball

In a bid to engage fans year-round, the Dodgers introduced Dodgers 365, a dedicated department focusing on non-baseball event initiatives. Consolidating tours, stadium rentals, and ticketed experiences, Dodgers 365 presents a plethora of opportunities for fans to immerse themselves in the Dodger spirit beyond game days.

Drone Shows and Enhanced Fan Comfort: Elevating the Game-Day Experience

Building on the success of last year's drone shows, the Dodgers have upped the ante with 10 spectacular drone shows scheduled for this season. These Friday post-game displays, featuring themed performances and captivating music, showcase the fusion of technology and entertainment at Dodger Stadium. Additionally, fan comfort has been prioritized with refreshed pavilion seats and the introduction of UberEats for convenient concession orders, minimizing wait times and maximizing enjoyment.

Tech-Savvy Solutions: QR Codes, Culinary Delights , Specialty Offerings and Unique Flavors

Embracing sustainability and convenience, Dodger Stadium has integrated QR codes in premium seating areas, allowing fans to access menus directly from their smartphones. This eco-friendly approach reduces paper usage while streamlining the dining experience. Speaking of dining, the stadium boasts a tantalizing array of new food items, ranging from traditional favorites to innovative delights. From the indulgent Fried PBB&J to the savory Pulled Pork Mac n' Cheese, the exotic Original Takoyaki, delicious Tiger Milk Boba, Birria Burger, Loaded Carne Asada Potato, Chicken Katsu Sando, Miso Ginger Salad, Kurobuta Pork Sausage, Fried Pickles, Korean Fried Bucket, and the new Home Plate Sampler, featuring veggie spring rolls, veggie tempura, veggie gyoza, and teriyaki chicken skewers.

The array of new food choices means there's something for everyone and allows fans to embark on a culinary journey from across the globe while simultaneously cheering on their beloved Boys in Blue.

The Dodgers have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on stadium upgrades, fan experiences, and renovations. The newly remodeled Centerfield Plaza is a haven for both young and old alike. In every upgrade and improvement, the team has made sure to incorporate the rich history of the franchise and celebrate its achievements.

As beautiful as the upgrades and renovations are, there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Traffic and transportation to and from the stadium is still a work in progress, and several fans have taken to social media to complain about the condition of the restrooms behind the outfield bleachers. Outdated escalators and elevators have also been a point of consternation among fans .

The press box, located on the suite level behind home plate, is in desperate need of repair and upgrades. It's one of the smallest and most outdated in all of baseball. Following the signings of Ohtani and Yamamoto this offseason, an influx of media members from across the globe has descended upon Dodger Stadium, forcing the press to squeeze together shoulder-to-shoulder in extremely tight spaces.

Additionally, with the increased rain in Los Angeles this year, weather-related damage and leaks have been revealed in the 62-year-old stadium that still requires repairs in certain parts.

These are all easy fixes of course. As welcome and inclusive the organization has been towards the players and fans, they can continue to do the same for everyone entering Dodger Stadium by making upgrades that more properly accommodate fans, media, and employees.

None of this takes away from the improvements, upgrades, and renovations the organization has made to other parts of the stadium. As the Dodgers continue to embrace tradition, innovation, and inclusivity, Dodger Stadium transforms into more than a venue—it becomes a dynamic tapestry of history, culture, and unparalleled fan experiences.

Whether witnessing the grandeur of a drone show, exploring the stadium's architectural marvels during a guided tour, or savoring the diverse flavors of its culinary offerings, fans will continue to immerse themselves in the timeless magic that is Dodgers' baseball.

Here's what's new at Dodger Stadium for the 2024 Season

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
