Sammy Hagar Announces ‘Best Of All Worlds’ Tour With Joe Satriani

November 14, 2023 —by VHND Leave a Comment

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer SAMMY HAGAR is embarking on the long-awaited “THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS” 2024 tour. Hagar will be joined by rock heavyweights and longtime bandmates MICHAEL ANTHONY (bass, backing vocals), JASON BONHAM (drums) and revealed on Nov 14 on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show that JOE SATRIANI, one of the best guitar players in the world, will complete the band. Produced by Live Nation and featuring special guests Loverboy, the 28-date tour will commence on July 13 in West Palm Beach, FL and will conclude on August 31 in St. Louis, MO. Pre-sales begin on Wednesday, November 15 at 10 am. General on-sale begins Friday, November 17 at 10am local. For tickets and more details, go to RedRocker.com .

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour,” said Hagar. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I. We were at my Birthday Bash in Cabo for my 76th and looked at each other and high fived, like ‘let’s do it.’ We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs. The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard so it’s time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can.”

The tour follows on the heels of the chart-topping success of THE COLLECTION II, the box set released October 6 featuring newly remastered versions of the four consecutive #1 albums released during the Hagar era of Van Halen: 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (1991), and BALANCE (1995). A reminder to fans of the arsenal of hits, many which haven’t been played live since the band’s 2004 reunion tour.

Collectively, Anthony, Satriani and Bonham have played together in nearly every phase of Hagar’s career including Van Halen, Chickenfoot and The Circle, so fans can expect a setlist which draws from some of the biggest rock anthems of the last 4-decades, including, Finish What Ya Started, 5150, Your Love is Driving Me Crazy, Best of Both Worlds, Poundcake, Sexy Little Thing, One Way To Rock, Right Now, Good Enough, Eagles Fly and more. They’ve also enlisted legendary Australian musician, Rai Thistlethwayte on keyboard and backing vocals. The tour represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this band of brothers deliver one of the most legendary hits-packed live shows of their career.

Recent tour reviews

I saw Joe at the Fargo Theatre on the 17th of Apr. It was a kickass show! I had back stage meet & greet as well. the event staff was very polite and accommodating. We got to see the back stage set-up, including all of the axes Joe was using during the tour, as well as song lists, pedal set-ups, etc. The show itself was amazing! Joe played flawlessly as usual(although, he'd probably say differently), and played all the greats! The new songs are amazing as well, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for the future. Joe was extremely friendly and easy to talk to. We talked about all kinds of things for at least five minutes. He was that way with all of the fans that were at the meet & greet. Always willing to sign whatever you had, as well as pictures with the man himself. Joe is and always has been a class act. I'll continue to enjoy and revel in his artistic genius, and see him whenever, where ever I can. Rock on Joe!

Top notch band.

Satriani is a virtuoso and he is an absolute master of his instrument. His show reflects that.

Usually a band would not sound as cohesive live as they do on their studio albums. Joe Satriani and his band on the other hand sounds has full authority of the soundscape. Every note was precise. Plus, all the improvisations were appropriate, not to mention very dynamic.

I got the VIP pass. Met Joe and got him to sign the posters for some of my friends with whom I grew up listening to Satch. The VIP pass took us on stage pre-show. Got to see Joe's tech tuning his guitars, saw his Marshall amps and his gear. Took lots of pics there.

Show started at 8 pm. The live tone was fantastic. Very balanced sound from every instrument.

Mike Kennelly performed an interesting solo halfway through the show. He plays the backing guitars on some of the songs, and even plays guitar solos, sometimes alongside Joe.

Bryan Beller is a unique bassist. His chemistry with Joe is great. It becomes obvious that he is a great support.

Marco Minneman played a solo as well. I am not a drummer, but would love to go to a workshop of his if he ever did any.

Stage lighting is another big highlight. Spectacular. The production assistant Jeff told me how they have 9 crews working on the set, plus another 7 from the venue who setup everything in 3 hours, and pack it up in an hour or 2 for the next show. That's a lot of work.

What's important is band chemistry. They're very dynamic on stage, solid performers. They all have such a mature and professional approach to their love of music, it's humbling. They're pushing the boundaries of the definition of rock for sure. It's [rock music] not all about sex, drugs, or Satanism. It's very dynamic, cultured, and definitely accomplished.

Amazing show! Joe left me speechless! Only a few criticisms. Almost three hours of deafening guitar was fun but it became grinding after a while, it would've been nice to have it broken up with the occasional vocal. The acoustics of The Danforth aren't the best and the sound became muddled and Joe's guitar work occasionally became lost. After seeing so many pyrotechnic showcases I would generously call "concerts" it was refreshing to see a simple straight up show that showcased some of the best musicianship I've seen in a very long time. And after seeing the on-going feud called "Van Halen" it was also great to see a group of musicians having the time of their life together and an artist absolutely loving what he does. Joe was downright exuberant! I would recommend this show to anyone who loves watching brilliant musicians create unforgettable music together. Great fucking show!!

Satch Vai US Tour: Joe Satriani & Steve Vai

Fresh on the heels of the exciting G3 Reunion of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson, comes “The Satch-Vai Tour.”

Satch and Vai’s musical careers have been intertwined since their very early days. Satriani served as Vai’s guitar teacher during their teenage years on Long Island, New York. Their connection has continued to evolve over the years, even sharing record labels, starting at Relativity Records in the late 80’s, to both calling Sony/Epic Records home for a significant portion of the 90’s. Together, they have also frequently teamed up with a third guitarist on multiple occasions throughout the span of 29 years, participating in the semi-annual G3 Tours, both in the U.S. and abroad.

“The Satch/Vai Tour is happening! I’m so looking forward to sharing the stage with Steve again,” exclaimed Satriani . “Every time we play together it takes me back to when we were teenagers, eating and breathing music every second of the day, pushing, challenging and helping each other to be the best we could be. I guess we’ve never stopped!”

Sharing the excitement, Vai remarked, “Touring with Joe is always a pleasure and an honor. He is my favorite guitarist to jam with, and now we have another opportunity to take it to the stage. I feel as though we are both at the top of our game and that the show will be a powerful celebration of the coolest instrument in the world, the electric guitar!”

Joe Satriani Is Taking a Crash Course in Van Halen for a Summer Tour: ‘This Is Going to Be Really Hard’

  • By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

When Mick Jagger needed a guitarist back in 1988 who could effortlessly play parts originated by Keith Richards, Brian Jones, and Mick Taylor, he called up Joe Satriani . Five years later, when Deep Purple needed to airlift in a guitarist at the last second after Ritchie Blackmore quit the band, they also went with Satriani. And when Alex Van Halen wanted someone that could somehow stand in for his brother Eddie Van Halen on a possible 2022 tribute tour with David Lee Roth, he too reached out to Satch.

We hopped on a Zoom with Satriani to talk about the genesis of the tour, his history with Van Halen, how he’ll approach Eddie’s playing, and his upcoming G3 reunion tour with fellow shredders Steve Vai and Eric Johnson.

Tell me your first memory of ever hearing Van Halen’s music. I was in my apartment in Berkeley. I had my guitar on, and I was doing an early morning practice. Usually what I do is I turn on the radio, have my coffee, and I just play along with anything that comes on. And all of a sudden, without any introduction, “Eruption” comes on. I was shocked, transfixed, overjoyed.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

I remember getting the [first Van Halen] record, bringing it to rehearsal, bringing it to friends’ houses, saying, “You got to hear this. This guy is really doing it.” And back then, people either loved it or they hated it. If they were listening to Talking Heads, they didn’t want to listen to Van Halen. But I looked past the whole thing that they were doing culturally or stylistically. I was just transfixed with Eddie’s playing. I just thought, “This guy’s a genius, what he’s doing with six strings is incredible.”

Before we get more into Van Halen, I want to talk about the year you have coming up. I’m looking at your schedule right now and it’s just an insane number of dates. It’s going to be great. It’s so varied, so mixed up. I’ve never done a cruise before, and I’m going on the Monsters of Rock cruise. And then spending that much time with Steve [Vai] is going to be great. We’re going to have a lot of fun on our own tour.

Watch Sammy Hagar Honor Toby Keith at 2024 CMT Awards With 'I Love This Bar'

Wolfgang van halen responds to david lee roth's ‘this f-ckin’ kid’ video: 'born into this van halen drama', alex van halen tells all about life with eddie in new book: 'i was with him from day one'.

I want to go back to the Mick Jagger tour you did in 1988, since that’s the first time you did anything like this Sammy Hagar tour coming up. What did you learn from that experience? It was totally out of left field that I got that gig. I thought, “Oh, I don’t play like Brian Jones and Keith Richards and all these great players that have been part of the Rolling Stones.” And I just put it to Mick one day in rehearsal, “I don’t play like any of these guys. What do you want me to do? How close do you want me to get?” And he went, “Oh, just forget about that. Just get into the song and do your thing. That’s all you got to do.” And he was not looking for me to replace anything unless he thought I was really feeling it.

When you play “Sympathy for the Devil,” I can’t get that great Keith Richards solo out of my head. But you play around it. I think what I found way back in ’88 was that if you quote the most important moments, then you trigger something in the audience, and they become very receptive to your approach to playing it.

I was just deep into this track, and then all of a sudden, one of my heroes walks in. We just sat there and listened to this song for five minutes. He made a couple of cool comments, and then Andy came in the room and called him out, and they went and they got in some trouble. And I never saw Andy for the rest of the day. That’s the only time I ever met Eddie.

When you formed Chickenfoot in 2008, with Chad Smith on drums, you never played even a single Van Halen song when you toured. Why was that? When we first got together in Sam’s studio, we started fooling around just playing covers. That’s how the band got started. And I forget what happened, but at one moment, everyone looked at each other and said, “You know what? No Chili Peppers, no Van Halen, no Surfing With the Alien . We should just do what we did the other night in Vegas,” which is we played Zeppelin and Traffic and the weirdest group of cover songs. This was an opportunity where we could step out of our main gigs and connect because of our shared influences. That’s what it was. We made it a rule.

You’ve talked before about Alex Van Halen approaching you about possibly doing a tour with him and David Lee Roth. Did it go anywhere besides a few conversations on the phone? Almost. When they first called me, I said, “Why me? I don’t play Eddie at all.” But I think I said yes before the rest of my brain informed me that it was a bad idea. I was thinking, “They’ve probably asked all the other proper candidates, and they had the good sense to say, ‘No way am I doing this.'”

I was just so enthusiastic about the idea of paying homage to Eddie, and the legacy of the band, and playing with Alex and Dave. I just thought, “Well, yeah, sure. If there’s time, I’ll be able to figure out parts and how Eddie played them.”

I also had a record to finish, and a tour to do. And so I called them up and I said, “Hey guys, thanks, but I’m not your guy.” And then they talked me out of quitting. I think that happened twice. And I thought, “Okay, they had all sorts of good reasons why I had to do it, that I was the guy.” So I thought, “Okay, but…”

Little things popped up, like possibly playing at Central Park at one point, but they would fizzle for some reason or another. I just started to think, “Well, this will really never happen.” And I was so deep into finishing The Elephants of Mars and getting the tour off the ground.

Then when I saw Wolfgang play his father’s stuff with the guys in the Foo Fighters, I mean, besides getting a big lump in my throat, I just thought, “Oh, this is the way it should go. That’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Why even think that you’d invite somebody else, especially somebody like me, to pay tribute like that?” So I just figured it was over. And I could exhale and say, “I can just go back to being Joe.”

Just as a fan, are you hoping that Alex will eventually get back out there and do something? Yeah. He is such an incredible drummer. It’s really sad to think that he wouldn’t come out again and give us another decade of absolutely amazing music, but that’s his decision. It’s a very difficult thing to get over losing a family member, and one that you made so much beautiful music with. And so I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen. I hope it does. He is, without a doubt, invited to take part in what Sammy has put together.

How did Sammy approach you with this tour? He called me and said that he had this great idea to go out and to cover all the material. He wanted to do the Hagar solo material work, Montrose, Chickenfoot, and Van Halen, maybe centering around the 1995 [ Balance ] tour. That tour was mostly his era, but it also dipped back into the David Lee Roth era. He said he wanted me to do a couple of my songs, and it was going to be Jason and Mike and him.

You weren’t at all hesitant about agreeing? No. I mean, once again, silly me. I’m just thinking about how much fun it would be, just from the audience standpoint. They get to hear these great songs, they get to see some of the OG members of Van Halen, and Jason and I would do our very best to make everybody feel great as we represent all these eras of music.

The sense I have is that the set will be about 75 percent Van Halen. Is that right? I don’t know. Last time I checked, it’s still November 2023. [Laughs] You’re asking me about a set list that’s really going to get finalized in the middle of July. However, I think there are some obvious songs, and Sam’s got some favorites that he always thought they underplayed, “The Seventh Seal” or something like that. But then there are the ones that were the Number One hits, and we are going to play those.

I just think that when you put together a show, it can’t just be about songs. It’s got to flow, and the band has to be somehow represented enough so that they can really bring the audience in. So you can’t play everything. If you’re lucky enough to have a long career, you realize you have to practice triage with your set list all the time.

When Sammy toured with the Circle, and they did a Roth-era Van Halen song, Michael would sing it. Do you think that’ll happen again, or might Sammy sing a song like “Jump” like he did during his time in Van Halen? I don’t know really what the plan is going to be that far in advance. I mean, I could see Sam and Mike trading night after night, who’s going to sing that stuff. My concern is they’ve been playing this stuff forever, right? I haven’t. The most I played any of this material was the other week for Howard Stern. And we played a lot of half songs.

Are you going to try and replicate Eddie’s guitar tone? It’s really interesting. There’s an interesting period with Ed, which he starts with an old Marshall [amp] head and he moves forward into the late 1980s, getting more and more complicated with these Marshall heads. And then at some point it flips and he goes to a Soldano [amp] and he starts developing the 5150 with Peavey, and then he keeps moving forward. And then the new era of the [EVH] 5153 starts up.

For a guitar player, this is a remarkable set of changes that affords you different ways of pulling things off. And one doesn’t work for the other. Using one of the brand new amps to represent something from the first album, it’s very difficult. And it’s difficult playing later songs with the earlier setup. So in the last week, my idea is the setup he was using in 1986 on Live Without a Net . He was still using Marshalls, but it was really complicated.

If you’ve ever seen pictures of the rig, how he was using the amps, he wasn’t just plugging in and turning them up. They were going into Power Soaks. They were going into effects loops, and sophisticated effects processors, and then going into power amps. It was a complicated setup, but at the heart of it was his incredible touch. He just had a beautiful touch on the guitar. He played with such intensity. I don’t want to generalize and say that he made everything sound good, but he did. [Laughs] You notice that when you have one of his guitars and his setup or his model, he just can’t be replaced.

Do you think you’ll play “Eruption?” I don’t think. I mean, this is not a Van Halen Tribute tour. If that’s what it was, it would be a totally different job for me. But I still have to play Chickenfoot, Montrose, Hagar, and Satriani stuff. And so I can’t get totally out of my head on those things. It would be like, “Would you go to see Eddie Van Halen play ‘Surfing With the Alien’ and ‘Rock Candy’ and all that?” It would be different.

For one night, it would be fun to really step out and interpret someone else’s material. But since this is a tour and we have to be consistently great, I think what I might do is I’ll try to put together a medley of solo bits that somehow can be integrated into the show.

The tour is a great chance to shine a spotlight on Michael Anthony. He’s so under-appreciated as a bassist, and as a singer. Mike is an incredible musician. He’s got one of those talents where a huge part of his musicianship is in his brain. He can memorize everything. He doesn’t forget any part of any song. And I think because he played trumpet for a long time, he conceptualizes notes in his head. It’s not just a guy who looks at the fretboard and memorizes the pattern. The music is totally inside of him.

I’m always texting him. I’ll go, “I just saw this video clip from a couple of decades ago, and I’m thinking, ‘Mike, how did you sing, play bass like that, bend over, and have David Lee Roth do a double flip over your back and then keep playing?'” But that’s Mike Anthony. I mean, he’s amazing. He was great in the studio with Chickenfoot too.

And Sammy still sounds great, especially when you consider that he’s 76. He sounds decades younger. Sam’s got the two most important things. He’s got a voice that’s as big as the Empire State Building. It’s a huge sounding, beautiful thing. And he can communicate to people. It’s not very often you get those two elements together in one person, incredible vocal chops, and the ability to reach every single person in the audience.

Those guys are going to have to get used to me. I mean, they’ve been playing with [ The Circle guitarist] Vic Johnson, who’s amazing and has figured all this stuff out. He’s had to play all decades of this music over and over again.

How was the experience of playing on Howard Stern? I’m sure that was stressful. It was. When Sam called, I was literally covered in paint, and I was trying to finish a bunch of canvases and guitars for the Wentworth Gallery. And I said, “Guys, I haven’t played guitar for a couple of weeks, and I’m not going to be able to practice until a week before. Maybe I’ll listen to some songs, so tell me what songs they are.”

Sam kept saying, “Oh, don’t worry about it. We’re just going to play 30 seconds of this song, 30 seconds of that song, and Howard’s going to ask you about your artwork and all this other stuff.” So of course, none of that happened because by the time we got there, it was all these other new songs. And I kept saying, “Guys, I don’t know these songs, so I’m going to be staring at you.” If you’ve seen the clips, I’m not facing front. I’m facing sideways because I’m looking for any cue.

I didn’t have much time, but it was purely a labor of love for me. I just thought, “I don’t care if I screwed this up. I’m just going to do it because Eddie’s playing was beautiful and people should know that. And if I can wake people up again about Eddie, that’d be great.”

If the tour goes well, might you take it to Europe, Australia, other markets? I think that’s such a great idea. I’ve been touring the world for several decades. And one thing I know is that if you’re lucky enough to play music that has really had a big impact on society around the world, that really had a dent in culture, it’s an extra experience.

It must be flattering that both Alex Van Halen and Sammy Hagar independently decided that you were the one man for this job. I can’t explain that. It’s funny because I have friends like Phil X or Nuno Bettencourt who I think really do Eddie really great. And out there in YouTube land, there are people like Jean-Michel Sutcliffe who just blow me away with how close they get.

Early on, one of my first students was Steve Vai, and I knew right away teaching this 12-year-old kid that he was going to be developing physical skills that were way beyond my capabilities. So I learned really early that not everybody can play everything.

Steve went through a little of what you’re about to go through when he was in the David Lee Roth Band. I was talking to him about that just yesterday. And he said there was no way he was going to approach doing the solos note-for-note. He said, “We’re just totally different players. We don’t feel that way. And solos are supposed to be honest expressions of how you feel. So you do the parts of the song, but then in these other moments where Eddie would just let things fly, it’s like he’s telegraphing you a license saying, ‘Now it’s your turn to just express yourself.'”

Steve Vai & Joe Satriani Tour happening!

For the first time ever, after more than 50 years of friendship, it’s the Satch-Vai 2024 Tour! Believe it not, this is the first time Joe and Steve will tour as a duo-bill, and it comes along with plans to release a new musical collaboration.

The Satch-Vai US Tour | Joe Satriani & Steve Vai

Tickets go on sale Friday Novemeber 17

Satch and Vai’s musical careers have been intertwined since their very early days. Satriani served as Vai’s guitar teacher during their teenage years on Long Island, New York. Their connection has continued to evolve over the years, even sharing record labels, starting at Relativity Records in the late 80’s, to both calling Sony/Epic Records home for a significant portion of the 90’s. Together, they have also frequently teamed up with a third guitarist on multiple occasions throughout the span of 29 years, participating in the semi-annual G3 Tours, both in the U.S. and abroad.

In April 2022, Satriani released “The Elephants of Mars,” his 19th studio album during his 35+year musical career. Last fall, he embarked on a worldwide tour that spanned the U.S. and culminated in France on June 4th. Satriani has also ventured into the world of art, creating original canvases and hand-painted guitars, which are currently available through the Wentworth Gallery. Satriani frequently makes special appearances at the showings where purchasers of his works are treated to a private performance within the gallery.

Vai has been traveling the world since the release of Inviolate . When the current tour plays its’ final show in December, he will have staged appearances in 51 countries across the globe since the album first came out. Some for the very first time. Alongside Inviolate , in the recent past Vai released an archival album titled Vai/Gash he had been holding in his archive for three decades.

This marks the first time that the long-time friends have toured as a duo-bill. In additional exciting news, for the first time they will collaborate on new music with plans to release just before the tour launches in March.

About Joe Satriani

For over three decades, the guitar virtuoso has traveled the world, playing to sold-out crowds as both a headliner and as founder of the all-star “G3” guitar extravaganza. Satriani’ s studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date and of his many solo albums, two have gone platinum and four others went gold , with 15 Grammy nominations between them. He launched his annual “G4 Experience” in 2014 bringing aspiring guitarists together for four days of workshops, mentor sessions and live performances, providing an exclusive learning platform led by him and his accomplished peers. In 2021, he introduced the "Crystal Planet" comic series, a five-part opus interweaving the realms of music and art. The tour documentary "Beyond the Supernova," directed by ZZ Satriani and currently available for streaming, offers an intimate behind-the-scenes glimpse that intricately chronicles his life, illuminating the profound dedication that fuels his guitar mastery. His side project, Chickenfoot , featuring former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, former bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith saw their debut album certified gold and their second studio album debuted at #9. Satriani released his 19 th studio album, The Elephants of Mars , in April 2022.

About Steve Vai

Steve Vai is a virtuoso guitarist, composer and producer, considered by many as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. In over 45 years in the industry, Vai has sold over 15 million records, received three Grammy Awards, and recorded with music legends like Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake and many more. Vai has also toured extensively and recorded live projects with G3 (collaborating with different touring lineups including Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Lukather) and Generation Axe, a supergroup Vai formed with Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi. Vai is the author of Vaideology: Basic Music Theory for Guitar Players (Hal Leonard), his inaugural music theory book designed to help both beginners and veteran guitar players. In the recent past, he has travelled the globe supporting his most recent studio album Inviolate , staging performances in 51 counties across the globe. Over the course of his 43 years touring, he continues to visit locations for the first time. His final excursion in 2023 saw Vai perform in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam), Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Zallak (Bahrain), Bangalore and Kolkata (India), alongside six new markets in China (Foshan, Xi’an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Nanjing and Hefei).

Longtime pals joe satriani and steve vai coming to mgm northfield, acclaimed rock guitarists to way back to their long island days as a teacher and student.

“In all the years that I’ve known him," Steve Vai says of his pal and co-headliner and a tour coming through MGM Northfield Center Stage, Joe Satriani, "there’s just this classic excellence every time he puts his hands on that instrument. He never makes mistakes. I’m a lot more visceral — I can be sloppy. " (Larry DiMarzio)

Last year marked the half-century mark from the moment a young Steve Vai started taking guitar lessons from Joe Satriani .

For the first time, the Long Island natives are teaming up for a co-headlining “Satch Vai US Tour,” which includes a show April 13 at the MGM Northfield Park Center Stage .

“We always had opportunities to go out together, but it was always in a G3 format, which was a particular type of entity (with another guitarist) that worked really well,” said Vai, calling from Jacksonville, Florida. “Other than that, we were always out promoting our own records. We did that for decades.”

Speaking of decades, Vai’s resume includes, in addition to his solo career, numerous high-profile gigs while performing with David Lee Roth and Whitesnake.

However, the guitarist extraordinaire — viewed early on as an Eddie Van Halen 2.0 — credits another musical genius, Frank Zappa, with giving him not only his start in the business but also an education from which he still draws.

“It was the launching pad,” he said. “I was 20 years old when I joined his band. I was like a sponge. I just watched everything Frank did. I learned about business. I learned how to survive the road, record, engineer, how to just conduct yourself on stage. It was so much. He was Frank Zappa, so I just absorbed everything I could, and I worked with him for a long time.”

Actually, prior to joining Zappa’s band, he was enlisted as the future Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s transcriptionist. Beginning at age 18, Vai spent two years listening to and transcribing Zappa’s eclectic catalog.

There’s no doubt such an exercise opened up creative gateways that were evident in Vai’s playing and solo career.

“It’s a great exercise because I was forced to enter a different kind of dimension in my head,” he said. “It was an incredible practice.”

The other impact Zappa had on the young guitarist’s career was the power of autonomy. While Vai could have spent the majority of his career jumping from one hard rock act to the next, he had other plans.

“I did my first solo record right (after finishing with) Frank in 1983, so I always knew that there were musical ideas going on in my head that were kind of personal to me,” he said. “I knew I was going to need to at some point start manifesting, but these other opportunities were so great.

“I’m a rock musician at heart, so bands like Alcatraz and Dave Roth and Whitesnake — they were fantastic. I played every arena in this country multiple times. There was just great economics in it, too. But I always knew at some point I was going to have to jump ship on all that and start doing my own music.”

That’s what fans attending the upcoming Northeast Ohio show can expect, with Vai performing before Satriani. Vai returns at the end of the set to perform the new track “The Sea Of Emotion, Pt. 1,” which he hinted may appear on a full-length album — which would be the first ever from Satriani and Vai together — that could be released next year.

Considering history and similar styles, the notion of having Vai and Satriani sharing the stage means it’s an opportunity to compare their talents. However, it appears as though Vai is fine with continuing the student-teacher dynamic.

“Joe is such a solid player,” he said. “In all the years that I’ve known him, there’s just this classic excellence every time he puts his hands on that instrument. He never makes mistakes. I’m a lot more visceral — I can be sloppy.

“I can have senior moments where I miss a note, but Joe is just really solid. His phrasing is so gorgeous. I’ve learned from him my whole life. It’s so nice to have these people in your life that lift you up. They’re always inspiring you.”

joe satriani on tour

Interview and Live Photos by Robert Cavuoto

Starting at the end of January 2024, Joe Satriani will embark on three back-to-back tours that will take him crisscrossing the United States like never before. For his first tour, Joe reunited the perfect traveling guitar extravaganza for his G3 Reunion, which includes Steve Vai and Eric Johnson. G3 is Joe’s brainchild and is a celebration of all things guitar. It is designed to showcase each guitarist’s musical prowess and diversity while inspiring musicians! The event is a meeting of different musical minds, backgrounds, and approaches, but in the end, it’s a cohesive evening of masterful playing. The G3 Reunion Tour runs from January 23rd in Tuscan, AZ, to February 10th in Los Angeles, CA.

After G3 concludes, Joe and Steve continue for their Satch/Vai Tour that runs from March 22nd in Orlando, FL, to May 12th in Santa Rosa, CA. Joe and Steve continue turning fans to their instrumental guitar playing and how their contrasting styles provide a brilliant spectrum of sound!

Tickets for both of these tours can be found here: http://www.satriani.com/road/

To the delight of all Van Halen and Chickenfoot fans, Joe, Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Jason Bonham have united to celebrate the music of Van Halen, Chickenfoot, and Montrose. It is a fitting and well-deserved tribute to Eddie Van Halen, entitled The Best of All World Tour. Those outdoor arena shows will start on July 13th in Palm Beach, FL, and end on August 31st in St. Louis, MO. Tickets for The Best of All Worlds can be found here: http://www.redrocker.com/

It is always an honor, pleasure, and privilege to interview one of the greatest guitar players in the world, Joe Satriani! In my interview, Joe discusses his busy 2024 with three major back-to-back tours plus the Monsters of Rock Cruise! Joe divulges that he and Steve Vai are currently working on a new song together that they will debut during the Satch/Vai Tour and how the tour with Sammy, Michael, and Jason will encompass not only all eras of Van Halen songs but songs from Chickenfoot and Montrose! He shares the daunting task of learning all the Van Halen songs and even had an amp explicitly built to emulate Eddie’s sound. Find out about the guitars Joe plans to take on these tours, but he has yet to pack his suitcase! june 2024

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. They’ve each pushed guitar playing (and guitar design) into uncharted territories with their Ibanez signature models. They’ve appeared on multiple GW covers together and graced stages throughout the universe alongside other guitarists on package tours like the long-running G3. Two things they haven’t done together? A co-headlining, just-the-two-of-’em tour, and writing and recording new original music. But that all changed on March 29, when instrumental rock's coolest new duo released The Sea of Emotion, Pt.1 , the first of a three-part musical journey that features just about everything a guitar lover could dream of.

Anyway, as you've probably figured out by now, the cover of the new issue of GW brings these two crazy kids together for the first time since our October 2007 issue. Inside, they discuss their gritty youth back in Long Island, New York , the very first time they saw each other and – surprisingly – an obscure piece of music they composed (and recorded) together more than 50 years ago. They also get into their new and future collaborations, the upcoming Satch/Vai tour and what lies ahead. As a very Guitar World -centric bonus, we also got them to talk about all of their previous joint GW cover appearances – plus a few of their interesting individual GW covers from 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993 and... you get the idea! This issue – aka the debonair June 2024 issue of  Guitar World  – is  available right here, right now .

june 2024

This issue also features...

>>> Matteo Mancuso explains the fingerstyle techniques, arpeggios and tones that have made him one of the most exciting names in modern guitar. >>> Judas Priest's Richie Faulkner, Rob Halford and Glenn Tipton team up to discuss Invincible Shield , the band's new album. >>> Ben Weinman tells you everything you need to know about the Dillinger Escape Plan ’s surprise 2024 reunion shows. >>> Rich Robinson discusses the one-for-all mindset of the reunited Black Crowes , what they look for in a lead guitarist, and how the band’s new record came together. >>> Robby Krieger breaks down the Soul Savages’ new album and explains his struggles to come up with his own sound during his years with the Doors. >>> We catch up with Carlos Cavazo , the guitarist who replaced Randy Rhoads in Quiet Riot, enjoyed massive success with Metal Health and shared the stage with Warren DeMartini in Ratt. >>> The Beatles vs. the Rolling Stones ? Not so much! Check out our guide to 10 friendly – and occasionally excellent – collaborations between these two legendary bands. >>> Stray Cays legend Brian Setzer discusses blown amp speakers, riff writing and how he manages to stay inspired. We also have new interviews with Office Dog's Kane Strang, Faster Pussycat's Sam Bam Kolton, the Schizophonics' Pat Beers, the one and only Ihsahn , Alex Skolnick, Cameron Griffin, Isaiah Mitchell and former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder, who gives us an exclusive peak at his pedalboard. This month's transcriptions are Melanie Faye's It’s a Moot Point , Nirvana's In Bloom and the Knack's My Sharona . We have reviews of the Lerxst Chi head and Chi 1x12 cabinet, the Yamaha Pacifica Professional P12M , the Endorphin.es Golden Master Multiband Mastering Processor pedal, the EarthQuaker Devices Zoar Dynamic Audio Grinder and the Boss Waza Craft BP-1W Booster/Preamp. In terms of columns, we have new installments by Andy Timmons, Josh Smith, Andy Aledort and Joe Bonamassa , who explains why the late, great Albert King was indeed a true king of the blues.

Steve Vai talks Joe Satriani relationship, music theory and more ahead of Cincinnati show

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Guitar shredding legends Steve Vai and Joe Satriani return to Cincinnati on their first co-headlining tour Friday. Both are known for their virtuosic tapping, picking techniques and dedication to the craft, with in-demand masterclasses and rigorous practice schedules.

I recently spoke to Vai about the pair’s indelible musical relationship, his early career working for Frank Zappa and the importance of music theory to his art.

Q: You just came out with a single last month and with your album, “Gash,” last year. They touch on different stages in your career – '80s arena rock to the classical concerto-like pieces. Do you have a favorite style of music to play?

Vai : I follow my instincts, and I don't question them. It’s a feeling of enthusiasm over a particular idea. So I've always loved composing. I started studying that when I was a child. Through the years I've composed a lot of music. Right after the pandemic I recorded four hours of my orchestra music in three weeks with the Metropolitan Orchestra in Holland, and two weeks with the Tampere Philharmonic in Finland.

The “Gash” record was another one of those energies in me that just was filled with enthusiasm. I recorded it in a week, two weeks. My friend who sang, Johnny "Gash" Sombrotto, was killed in a motorcycle accident. That was 31 years ago. I put the record on the shelf and released it 31 years later.

If you ask me my favorite thing, it might be a toss-up between just sitting and composing or being onstage and playing my music. Now it's being onstage with Joe. We just keep eclipsing ourselves.

Tell me about your relationship with Joe. I understand he was your guitar teacher, and you do master class tours now. Do you have anything to say about what an important quality of a music teacher is?

I grew up on Long Island, in this little town called Carle Place. Joe Satriani, we went to the same schools our whole life. He was four years older than me, so he was one of the big kids. We all loved him, and he was a great guitar player. I was 12 years old when I started taking lessons with him. I took lessons on and off for some years, and then he moved to California.

All through these decades, we've been joined at the hip because our solo music falls in a similar genre. We've toured together with G3. We've played on records together, but we never actually sat down and wrote music together, and we never actually toured just the two of us.

I saw this recent clipping, an interview from around 1990 with me and Joe in a guitar magazine. They asked us, "Are you ever going to make a record together?" The answer was, "Right now, we're pretty embroiled in our solo careers, but a record feels like it’s going to happen one day." I even mentioned we should call it "The Sea of Emotion" because it came up during that interview.

It's reflective of a place that we all used to hang out. A giant field in between all the schools. We’d sit there, teenagers, and get in a lot of trouble. Joe and I would go there after lessons and sit and overlook this giant field, and talk about all those things that teenagers talk about – discovering the universe and the meaning of life.

When Joe and I decided to do this tour together, the idea came up: We should maybe have some new music. The next thing you know, I get these two beautiful tracks from Joe. I started working on them, and they were called "The Sea of Emotion, Part One and Part Two." I had a recording from a lesson with Joe when I was 13. He showed me this riff, and he was experimenting with some cords, and we recorded it. I thought it’d be a great idea for part three. So there's actually a little piece of teenage Steve and Joe jamming, and then it breaks into part three of the song. It was so much fun, we decided, "Let's do a whole record."

One of your first big jobs was playing with and transcribing Frank Zappa's music. You went to Berklee, Boston. That's a very cerebral path to understanding music. What would you say is the importance of doing that intellectual skill work, and how does that fit in with the emotional aspect of your art?

Well, it's really up to the individual. If their interest is in understanding high-information music or not. I was always interested in the language of music. And I wanted to understand my guitar. So for me, Berklee was appropriate. Even more so were the music classes I was taking in high school from seventh grade through 12th grade with this guy, Bill Westcott. He was a savant. He taught me everything about music theory. When I was taking lessons with Joe, it showed me how to take all that music theory that I was using to compose and apply it to the guitar.

But the thing is, it's a very common question that young musicians have. "How much cerebral information should I have?" I always say, the most important thing is your ear. How do you listen to music? How do you hear yourself? How do you hear what it is you want to do? That's how you manifest it.

For a person like myself, music theory has come in handy because it can open up doors in the melodic, harmonic realm. But you're only going to be able to retain music theory if you're interested in it. And if you're not, you probably won't retain it, and you may not use it. Having said that, it's a good idea to at least understand basic music language. If you're a guitar player, you got to know all the notes, chords, scales, just basic stuff.

With the rise of hip-hop and electronic-based music, what do you think the role of the guitar and acoustic instruments in general is in modern music?

Well, the guitar is still a very healthy ingredient in even pop music. You get Ed Sheeran, and even Taylor Swift is playing a guitar. As far as intense playing, it's just not accessible to the masses, usually – the evolution of shred, so to speak. There's a very healthy underground movement of young artists that are just hitting the scene that are doing incredible things on the guitar. Their chops, their ability to navigate the neck is higher than I've ever seen. But it’s relatively niche.

You're touring later this year, playing ‘80s King Crimson tunes with Arian Belew, Danny Carey and Tony Levin.

One of the groups that I loved in the '80s was King Crimson. It's four guys, and they just recorded live. They'd do tracks in one take, and if they didn't like it, maybe they'd do it the next day. It's rare. Now that I'm looking under the hood at all this Crimson music from that period, it is so brilliant. I've never seen or heard anything like it.

World-Check is a screening database used for "know your customer" checks (or KYC), allowing companies to determine if prospective customers are high risk or potential criminals, such as people with links to money laundering or who are under government sanctions. The hackers told TechCrunch that they stole the data from a Singapore-based firm with access to the World-Check database, but did not name the firm.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, entertainment | joe satriani, steve vai torch the fisher theatre with guitar wizardry.

A blast of guitar power chord and a room-shaking drum beat assured those at the Fisher Theatre on Tuesday night, April 16, that they were not there for…oh, “Mama Mia.”

Instead the usual home of Broadway touring productions hosted Joe Satriani and Steve Vai and their heavy rock guitar heroics, more than two and a half hours (plus a 20-minute intermission) of joyful six-string indulgences that ranked as likely the loudest thing to ever play the Fisher stage — which Satriani called “a beautiful place” early in his set. The Fisher has seen its share of virtuosic performances over the years, and on Tuesday the pairing of the two gunslingers certainly ranked among them, even if the volume and the (comparative) rowdiness of the crowd seemed to discomfit some of the theater staff.

The two axemen — friends since their teens on Long Island, where Satriani gave Vai guitar lessons — have toured together before, of course, mostly on Satriani’s G3 packages. But this year’s outing is their first with just the two of them, which gave them each an ample hour or so with their own quartets before joining forces for a three-song, 35-minute encore where they really got to have fun.

That closing segment began with “The Sea of Emotion, Pt. 1,” a recently released collaboration that will be part of a joint album Satriani and Vai plan to release next year. Standing side by side, the two black-clad, sunglassed musicians warmed into it with a long introductory jam before trading off on the song’s majestic melodies. That was just the warm-up for the mayhem that followed, however, as the duo — backed by Satriani’s quartet, with Kenny Aronoff, credibly called “the greatest drummer in the world” by his boss, holding things together — roared into the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” sung by keyboardist-guitarist Rai Thistlethwayte. That was followed by an equally long discourse on Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” also sung by Thistlethwayte and quoting a number of other songs during its playful breakdown section.

There was context for those selections, by the way; after moving to Los Angeles Satriani taught Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, while he’s also preparing for a summer tour with Sammy Hagar which will include a substantial amount of Van Halen material, likely including “You Really Got Me,” which that band covered as its first hit.

The joint session put a crowd-pleasing cap on what was already a night spotlighting the ridiculously accomplished musicianship of each player.

Vai brought the shred during his hour-long, eight-song set — half from his latest album, 2022’s “Inviolate.” He and his band came out blazing with “Avalanche” — holding his guitar away from his body by its whammy bar as he danced — and tore through epic renderings of “Zeus in Chains” and “For the Love of God,” the latter making social commentary with an accompanying video of historic world events. For “Teeth of the Hydra,” meanwhile, Vai pulled out the Hydra itself, a three-neck instrument mounted on a stand that was as striking visually as it was musically.

Satriani and Vai at the Fisher Theatre, 5 things to know

Satriani followed with a well-chosen troll through his catalog during his 11 songs, with a bit of focus on his 1987 breakthrough "Surfing With the Alien." His was a more stylistically diverse offering, mixing his brand of shred with blues ("Satch Boogie" and "Big Bad Moon," on which he sang), Middle Eastern flavors ("Sahara"), funk ("Blue Foot Groovy") and lyrical romantic balladry ("Always With Me, Always With You"). And on "Ice 9" he gleefully passed the ball with his bandmates, giving a solo to bassist Bryan Beller and engaging in a guitar-piano exchange with Thistlethwayte.

Vai spoke early in his set about the show being "an experience we can all treasure together." Mission accomplished, then, as he and Satriani delivered performances that nobody at the Fisher will soon forget.
