In saying that, the majority of travelers who visit Bohol just come to see the famous Chocolate Hills, so I am sure it’s already on your itinerary!

There are good reviews and bad reviews of Chocolate Hills Bohol, though don’t let anything you read on the internet deter you from experiencing this other-worldly location.

It’s even better than expected through your own eyes!

There are a couple of options available to reach Chocolate Hills in Bohol and that is either DIY or with a tour.

If you prefer to visit Chocolate Hills DIY it’s best to rent a scooter in the main tourist area of Panglao and make the 1.5-hour drive to Carmen.

Scooter rentals in Panglao are around 300 – 350 pesos  per day.

WITH A TOUR:

Alternatively, you can book a Bohol Chocolate Hills Tour which is a full-day tour from Panglao and is a great value for money.

This tour includes Chocolate Hills, Bilar Man-Made Forest, Loboc River Cruise, Tarsier Sanctuary, and Baclayon Church.

HOW WERE THE CHOCOLATE HILLS IN BOHOL FORMED?

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol were formed through a process known as limestone weathering. Millions of years ago, coral reefs in the sea died and accumulated on the ocean floor, forming layers upon layers of limestone.

Over time, tectonic activities — movements within the Earth’s crust — caused the seafloor to rise, bringing the limestone above sea level.

Rainwater, which contains a slight amount of acid, then seeped into the limestone, slowly dissolving it in a process known as chemical weathering.

Over a significant period, this weathering formed the limestone into the dome-like hills that we can see today – the Chocolate Hills.

HOW MANY CHOCOLATE HILLS ARE THERE?

Some reports indicate there are 1,260 Chocolate Hills in Bohol, however, others believe there could be as many as 1,776.

MY EXPERIENCE AT CHOCOLATE HILLS BOHOL

We left our accommodation in Panglao at 4 am to make the drive out to the Philippines Chocolate Hills in time for sunrise.

It was a long and chilly motorbike ride to reach the Chocolate Hills viewpoint in Carmen town but we were the first tourists to arrive which made the early journey worth it.

I parked the scooter right at the top of the hill and then climbed the steep set of stairs to reach the Chocolate Hills viewpoint.

At the top of the stairs is a panoramic observation deck boasting extensive views of the 1,268 cone-shaped Chocolate Hills and the surrounding Carmen region .

I spent a good hour taking photos of the Chocolate Hills in the Philippines and was not once interrupted by large groups of tourists which is quite common at this Bohol tourist spot.

I would definitely recommend you visit at sunrise and by arriving early in the morning as we did, you’ll most likely have the whole viewing deck to yourself.

The mysterious landscape is very impressive, to say the least, and definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

Chocolate Hills also offers facilities such as restrooms, a restaurant, and a souvenir shop.

BOHOL CHOCOLATE HILLS – INTERESTING FACTS

These limestone Chocolate Hills are covered with grass and appear to be bright green during the rainy season.

However, they turn brown by the end of the dry season, hence their name.

The hills are surrounded by green trees but funnily enough, no trees grow on the hills.

The hills are spread over an area of 50 square kilometers and vary in size from 30 meters to 120 meters in height!

The Chocolate Hills are all spread over the towns of Valencia, Batuan, Carmen, Bilar, Sierra Bullones, and Sagbayan.

We later found out that you can view the Chocolate Hills of the Philippines from two lookouts – one in Carmen which is the one that appears in Google Maps and one in Sagbayan called the Sagbayan Peak.

The formation theory of the hills assumes that they are grass-covered limestones that were once part of the marine floor.

However, the massive uplift of coral deposits and the effects of rain, water, and erosion have created the amazing formation that you see today.

Even if you’re staying on the coast at Anda Beach or in Panglao Island, there’s a plethora of tour agencies who will take you, commonly on a day tour including the Tarsier Sanctuary, Manmade Forest, Loboc River and more. If you’re in a hurry this trip could be a good option to hit up everything in a few hours.

As usual though, we recommend taking your time. Sure, you could hop in a tourist van, zip up to the viewing site, jump out, snap a selfie and be on your way. Believe us, we saw plenty of people doing this. But if the Chocolate Hills are one of your main reasons for coming to Bohol, then you may as well take your time.

If you’d like to spend the day around the Chocolate Hills area you can sleep in Loboc and grab a ride or rent a motorbike (350-450P per day) for the half hour drive. If you want to be really close to the action though, grab a room in Carmen. From town the closest viewing area is only a couple minute drive. Plus there are a couple of interesting spots to see around town including the church destroyed by the 2013 earthquake, which is now overgrown by vines and plants.

Although the Chocolate Hills get their name from their color in the dry season, they were spectacular when we saw them in the rainy season. The lush green grass gave them more of a mint chocolate look.

The best time of day to visit the Chocolate Hills is debatable. If you’re staying in Carmen, it’s easier to visit for sunrise and/or sunset, both of which are supposed to be beautiful. We visited midmorning and again in the afternoon. The clearer the skies, the more even lighting you’ll get in the photo, so avoid clouds if you can. You’ll also avoid the crowds if you stay away from the midday hordes of tourist buses that shuttle in and out.

Where To See Them

Once you get into the interior of Bohol you’ll notice that the hills are really everywhere. Riding along the main road you can probably look to your left and right and spot some. To get a good view, however, head to one of the viewing platforms. The first is the official government “Chocolate Hills Complex” in Carmen. Entrance is 50 pesos and there’s a short set of stairs up to the viewpoint. Next to the parking lot is an area where a group of children perform songs on ukuleles and do dances. Keep an eye out for the young boy who does a great speech about the legend of the Chocolate Hills and the super cute little girl dancers in hula skirts.

The other viewing point, the Sagbayan Peak, is more like a Chocolate Hills amusement park. It’s located about 18 k from Carmen and also 50 pesos, but you could argue you get more bang for your buck. The view is a bit more spread out than the previous one, but also produces some nice shots. Jules preferred this view, while I preferred the previous one, so it’s just a personal preference. This complex also includes a Kid’s Zone with a self-monitored free “zip line,” statues of super heroes and animals and playhouses for children. There’s also a restaurant on site, although we were pretty disappointed by the food. I’m sure this place picks up a little more in the high-season. They also tell you that the ticket includes entrance to their Tarsier “Sanctuary.” This round enclosure was only a few meters wide and held two tarsiers. Although the sign out front said to remain silent, the hut is right by the ticket office and quite loud. The attendant woke the tarsiers up by feeding them, which made us uncomfortable because they are extremely sensitive nocturnal animals. They also ask for a donation inside the hut. I would highly recommend NOT entering the “sanctuary.” We regretted going in. This does not seem like proper care for the tarsiers. Instead check out the official Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella.

Whether you only have time for a quick trip or can leisurely enjoy the hills from different viewpoints at different times of day, the Chocolate Hills are one of the highlights from our Philippines trip. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Your photos are great. I loved the Chocolate Hills. It was really weird being there so soon after the earthquake and the typhoon. When I visited the island had been without power for over a month following the typhoon. And the damage from the earthquake was astronomical. Luckily we were able to motorbike to the hills from Alona Beach but it was intense to see the collapsed churches and homes and some areas of roads were ripped apart. The viewing platform at the hills was still closed when I visited but the view was stunning nonetheless! I loved Bohol and would really love to go back and explore more 🙂

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol are one of the most famous landmarks in the Philippines. They create a truly unique geological formation – between 1260 and 1776 hills in varying shape and size. The hills are covered in grass, which turns brown during the summer – thus giving them their name.

How to get to the Chocolate Hills?

Most people book organized tours, which include transfers to the Hills from either Cebu or Tagbilaran. Guided tours allow to understand the history and significance of the place better, as well as make the most out of your day there. However, it’s certainly possible to travel to the hills by yourself and try out any activity and attraction you’d like.

If you are already in Bohol , then you probably booked an hotel at Panglao. Organized tours include a pickup directly from your resort. Otherwise, you’ll need to drive 30 minutes to Tagbilaran and find a guide there. It only takes 60 minutes from Tagbilaran to the Hills, so renting a motorbike and doing it by yourself is also a nice option. Travelling by bus in Bohol is generally not a good idea, since you risk wasting your whole day doing so.

Where to stay?

The most common choice is to book the trip to the hills from Cebu or Panglao, so you can include it in a package with accommodation there. Chocolate Hills ATV Tour

Renting an ATV (all terrain vehicle) is the most popular way of exploring the hills. Suitable for the whole family, you can get all muddy and dirty in this extreme ride. You'll need to get to the Buenos Aires barangay in Carmen, because that's where the rental offices are. Once there, you can either rent a vehicle or take part in a guided tour.

The guided tour goes for either 30 minutes or an hour, depends on your choice. Both include the Three Sisters Hills, and the longer route will also take you through the Eight Sisters. You can choose between a bug car or an ATV, both compatible for 2 persons. The buggy has a roof and is more like a car, so it's the safer option for novices.

You'll be accompanied by a professional guide, and provided with all necessary safety gear. The guide will help you figure out how to drive, as well as give some insights on the sights around you. Make sure to bring extra clothes, and keep in mind children under the age of 10 can only ride in the back. Pay close attention to the guide's instructions, and you are guaranteed to have a thrilling yet safe experience.

Adventure Park

This is a compound owned by the Camanayon Hill Development Corp, and a popular attraction among locals. It's especially suited for corporate events and bonding days, but that doesn't mean it can't also be a great way to pass half a day or so in Bohol.

The park has 30 different activities you can take part in. The most popular attraction is the zip line, offering a fantastic view of the hills. There's also a zip bike, as well as treetop rope climbing, horseback riding and other extreme adventures. Overall, the park is a great place for families and couples to spend some time together doing fun activities.

You'll have to pay a small entrance fee of Php 100, and then pay more for each ride you wish to take. Most of these rides cost Php 600 per person. Keep in mind though that most of them are prohibited to children under 6, and people weighing over 90kg (200 pounds).

Chocolate Hills is open daily (including holidays) from Monday to Sunday, 8.30am to 5.30pm . The best time to visit here is during the dry season, from January to May, so you can see the chocolate-colored hills. But if you prefer to see them in their greenest, you can visit during the monsoon or rainy season, which typically lasts from June to December.

The Chocolate Hills are a geological formation of as many as 1,776 conical hills in Bohol , spread over 50 sq km across the towns of Carmen, Batuan, and Sagbayan. The hills are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season of February to June, transforming them into rows of seemingly chocolate-covered mounds. One can view the hills spanning far into the horizon from the elevated overlook decks in Carmen and Sagbayan.

To reach the Chocolate Hills, you must travel to the province of Bohol first. It is accessible by air if you are coming from Manila, Clark, or Davao, landing at the Bohol-Panglao Airport. 

Upon arrival, you will then head to Dao Integrated Bus Terminal in Tagbilaran City, and ride a bus or van to the town of Carmen, where the Chocolate Hills Viewpoint Complex is situated. Another option to see the famous hills is at Sagbayan Peak, a mountain resort and park located in the town of Sagbayan. You can also ride a bus or van to get here from the Dao Integrated Bus Terminal.

If you are traveling by sea to Bohol, there are trips coming from Cebu, Dumaguete, Siquijor, Camiguin, and Cagayan de Oro, docking at the Tagbilaran City Seaport. From here, you can take a tricycle to Dao Integrated Bus Terminal and do the same process as mentioned above.

Some developers cut through Chocolate Hills – DENR

M ANILA, Philippines — Some project developers cut through the Chocolate Hills in Bohol during the construction of their structures, Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga said, reiterating that this is prohibited under the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) law.

In a radio interview yesterday, Loyzaga noted that the defacement of Chocolate Hills was even worse in the case of Sagbayan Peak, where the hilltop was all but lopped off.

“Based on our fly-over, there were similar resorts that we discovered. We discovered in particular the Sagbayan Peak where the peak of the Chocolate Hills was flattened,” she said.

Loyzaga and Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos visited the controversial Captain’s Peak Resort and other structures within the Chocolate Hills on Thursday.

“What I saw yesterday, the developer (Captain’s Peak Resort) cut some of the trees in order to design (the resort) and execute the project,” Loyzaga added.

She said that all structures at the Chocolate Hills will likely be demolished to restore the protected area.

“The (violations) on the hills were very obvious for them to execute their design in the development,” she said, noting the alteration of the hills is strictly prohibited.

Loyzaga said the demolition of the structures is necessary to restore what was damaged at the Chocolate Hills.“Yes, there is a need (to demolish the structures). We have what we call a mitigation approach for this kind of activity. The first one is to avoid the disturbance. If we cannot avoid the disturbance, we need to minimize, remedy and if we cannot remedy, we need to task (the developer) to compensate, to offset (the damage) through compensation,” she said.

“We are trying to trace when the activities started as we suspect that the activities happened when our concerned personnel were not allowed to go out during the COVID period,” she added.

Another resort

The Bud Agta resort – situated in Barangay Tamboan in Carmen town where some of the Chocolate Hills are also located – has violated the law, according to Mayor Conchita delos Reyes.

Reyes said that she did not issue a mayor’s permit to operate this year since the resort only applied for a trekking and camping ground.

The mayor said that she found out the resort has built a 174-step spiral staircase made of hardwood and G.I. pipes that leads to the top of a Chocolate Hill, based on the environmental clearance certificate (ECC) issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

She admitted that she issued a mayor’s permit in 2023 since the resort was issued an ECC and has been allowed by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB).

The ECC of the resort provides for a hilltop and viewing deck, aside from other amenities like cottage area, restrooms, resto bar, duck pond, trekking and camping grounds.

Reyes said she will also conduct an inventory of all resorts established in protected areas in Carmen town.

The government of Carmen manages the Chocolate Hills Complex, an eco-tourism park located in Barangay Buenos Aires, not far from Bud Agta resort.

Chocolate Hills Complex is owned by the provincial government, which takes 30 percent of net income, while Carmen town takes 70 percent.

The mayor said the Chocolate Hills Complex raked in over P106 million last year, surpassing its target of P80 million from fees and other income. Tourist arrivals at the complex averages 2,500 visitors daily.

Chocolate Hills Complex was built before the Chocolate Hills protected area was created and declared a national monument for its scientific and historical importance.

For his part, Abalos said he has an initial list of local government officials who will be charged for allowing the construction of the Captain’s Peak Resort.

Abalos likewise gave assurance that they will hold accountable those liable for defacement of the Chocolate Hills protected area.

“I’m sure there’s liability. They’re liable under the law,” he told reporters during his ocular inspection on Thursday at the Captain’s Peak resort, which was found operating without an ECC.

Abalos did not identify those who will be held liable, as he still has to evaluate the findings of his investigating team prior to submitting a report to the Office of the Ombudsman.

At the same time, Loyzaga told media that there’s a possibility for closure of the Captain’s Peak Resort. She added that demolition of the resort may be done, then the restoration of the hills follows.

“Most important at this point is if Bohol wants to keep its geopark status, it needs to have certain standards in terms of its development moving forward and part of that has to do with the rehabilitation of sites like this,” Loyzaga told media.

Abalos and Loyzaga agreed on two other things: a review of the guidelines and an inventory, as well as capacitating the members of the PAMB.

In 2018, PAMB approved a resolution granting go-signal to the Captain’s Peak resort, since the board was then presided over by a barangay captain. The resort was also given a building permit by the local government unit of Sagbayan, even without an ECC.

According to Abalos, the PAMB had no chairman when the resolution was approved.

PAMB allows the use of 20 percent of the Chocolate Hills area. This enabled the resort owner to build two water slides at the foot of the two hills attached to the swimming pool and seven cottages. There are still two unfinished concrete buildings issued with building permits until the resort was closed down when Abalos inspected the area.

In a memorandum circular, Abalos directed all Department of the Interior and Local Government regional directors to do an inventory of all establishments inside protected areas and submit the list to him.

Loyzaga said an inventory is in order to identify resorts in critical protected areas, and a review of some 114 legislated protected areas must be done.

DOT in PAMB

The Department of Tourism (DOT) would lobby for it to become a part of the PAMB, which is responsible for overseeing the country’s protected areas such as the world-famous Chocolate Hills in Bohol.

“On the national level, since PAMB is a creation of law and DOT is not a part of PAMB, we are lobbying for legislation to amend its composition to include the DOT so it may give its insights and guidance on sustainable tourism development for protected areas,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco said.

Once included, the DOT would be able to “provide recommendations on furthering the protection and preservation of the country’s protected areas safeguarded by the law,” according to a statement from the agency.

Responsible tourism should be observed in protected areas, Abalos, Loyzaga and Frasco said in a joint statement amid the controversy brought by the development of resorts and other structures at the Chocolate Hills.

In the statement, the three Cabinet officials added that the issuance of ECC should be a prerequisite for the development of areas covered by the NIPAS law.

“The recent issue at the Chocolate Hills in Bohol highlights the importance of responsible development in protected areas, emphasizing the delicate balance between economic development, sustainable livelihood and environmental conservation,” they said.

According to Loyzaga, Abalos and Frasco, the preservation of the country’s natural heritage is paramount, adding that harnessing the economic benefits of the nation’s resources must be tempered with the duty to uphold the integrity of the protected areas today and for generations yet to come.

Loyzaga, Abalos and Frasco added that approval and implementation of management plans in the protected areas can only be effective through balanced and streamlined representation in governing bodies, such as the PAMB.

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.
