How does E-ZPass work with a trailer?

Pavithra Vinoth

  • December 21, 2022

E-ZPass is an electronic toll collection system used by many toll roads, bridges, and tunnels across the United States. It allows drivers to pay tolls without stopping and handing over cash or a ticket. Instead, a small transponder is mounted on the front of the vehicle, and as the vehicle passes through the toll booth, the toll is automatically deducted from the driver’s account.

While E-ZPass is a convenient and efficient way to pay tolls for passenger vehicles, it can be a little more complicated for drivers towing a trailer. In this article, we will look at how E-ZPass works with a trailer and the options available for trailer owners.

How E-ZPass Works?

E-ZPass works by using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. When a vehicle passes through a toll booth, an antenna mounted on the toll booth sends a signal to the transponder on the vehicle. The transponder then responds with a unique identification number linked to the driver’s account.

The toll amount is automatically deducted from the driver’s account, and a receipt is sent via email or mail (depending on the agency). If the driver’s account does not have sufficient funds, the toll booth will typically display a message indicating that the account needs replenishment.

If you tow a trailer, you will need to ensure that your E-ZPass transponder is properly configured. This is because trailers are often classified as different vehicles and may require a different toll rate than the vehicle towing them.

There are a few different options for trailer owners who use E-ZPass:

Option 1: Purchase a separate transponder for the trailer

Some toll agencies offer transponders designed explicitly for trailers. These transponders can be mounted on the front of the trailer and linked to the driver’s account. When the trailer passes through the toll booth, the toll will be automatically deducted from the account.

The advantage of this option is that it allows the trailer to be accurately charged the correct toll amount. However, it does require an additional transponder and may incur additional fees.

Option 2: Use the transponder from the towing vehicle

In some cases, it is possible to use the towing vehicle’s transponder to pay the trailer’s toll. This can be done by linking the transponder to the trailer’s license plate number.

The advantage of this option is that it does not require the purchase of an additional transponder. However, it may not always be accurate as the trailer’s toll rate may differ from the vehicle towing it.

Option 3: Use a “trailer plate” transponder

Some toll agencies offer a “trailer plate” transponder, a special type of transponder that can be used to pay tolls for trailers. The transponder is linked to the trailer’s license plate number and can be used to charge the correct toll amount accurately.

The advantage of this option is that it allows the trailer to be accurately charged the correct toll amount without requiring the purchase of an additional transponder. However, it may not be available in all areas and may incur additional fees.

Option 4: Use a “trailer pass”

Another option for trailer owners is to use a “trailer pass.” This is a special type of pass that allows the trailer to be included in the towing vehicle’s E-ZPass account. The trailer pass is typically a sticker or decal placed on the trailer’s license plate.

The advantage of this option is that it allows the trailer to be included in the towing vehicle’s E-ZPass account without requiring the purchase of an additional transponder. However, it may not be available in all areas and may incur additional fees.

E-ZPass is a convenient and efficient way to pay tolls, but it can be a little more complicated for drivers towing a trailer. There are a few different options available for trailer owners, including purchasing a separate transponder for the trailer, using the transponder from the towing vehicle, using a “trailer plate” transponder, or using a “trailer pass.” It is essential to check with your local toll agency to determine the best option for your situation.

How Do I Get An EZ Pass?

Table of Contents

You can get an EZ Pass by visiting the website of the E-ZPass company in your state. You will need to create an account and provide personal information, including your driver’s license number. Once you have registered, you will be able to purchase a transponder (or “tag”) to put on your windshield. transponders can either be installed right onto the glass, or they can be fitted with a mount that sticks to the window using suction cups.

A tag costs about $25, and it will typically come with an available toll balance of around $20 (which you will have to add). You’ll fill out some personal information when you buy the EZ Pass, and the company will send you a sticker to put on your windshield. You can also get more tags for additional vehicles.

What States Does It Work In?

ez pass travel trailer

EZ Pass is accepted in 15 states/ locations and toll roads in Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia . E-ZPass also works in the District of Columbia. For a full list of E-ZPass participating states/ locations and more information, visit the E-ZPass website.

There are other types of toll payment systems that work in some states and not others: The main ones include EZ Tag (Texas), FasTrak (California), and Sunpass ( Florida ). If you’re traveling to one of these states from out of state, find out if this will work there and what you’ll need to do differently to pay your toll road fees and toll invoices.

How Much Does EZ Pass Cost?

There is an initial cost for the transponder (for example, $35 in the state of VA), and then some states charge a small monthly or annual fee to keep your account active. The amount of tolls you’ll pay also varies by state. You can find a full list of rates on the E-ZPass website. Each state manages its own website for tolls and transponder/ pay by plate sites.

How Does EZ Pass Work?

What Are The Benefits Of EZ Pass?

There are many benefits, including:

– No need to stop or slow down at the toll plaza

-E Zpass only lane (less traffic and waiting)

Rental vehicles are EZ Pass-friendly, as long as the vehicle is equipped with the correct hardware. You can either purchase this through your rental agency, or you’ll have the option of renting a transponder for a small fee if there isn’t one built into your car when you pick it up. Depending on your needs and the rental agency’s policies, transponders can be rented for a day or several months.

If You’re Not From An E-ZPass State, Is There An Alternative To Purchasing A Transponder When Traveling?

Some alternatives allow you to use EZ Pass even if it isn’t offered where you live:

– Use a toll service like EZ Pay (which works with EZ Pass) or PlatePass (which uses your license plate number).

– Get an EZ Pass from a different state. If you’re traveling to one of the 15 states that accept this pass, this could be a good option for you.

-Pay by plate. You can pay by plate for tolls if you would rather pay tolls and not get an transponder for the E-ZPass toll states. Register your license plate on the website and pay the tolls as needed. This is an option if you are only visiting the states for a short time. (Same as PlatePass).

In conclusion, EZ Pass is the ultimate driving companion. You never have to worry about exact change or having coins on hand – drive through any E-ZPass lane as you normally would, and the system will take care of the rest. This system is a real-time saver!

Can I Use My EZ Pass While Towing a Trailer? (MA PA E-ZPass)

  • By James V.

Experience says a lot. If you do not drive the East Coast toll roads, you may not have heard about EZ Pass and how it works. When you read about this Pass on the RV discussion forums, you may see that different RV owners have different experiences using different EZ Pass transponders.

Yes, you can use your EZ Pass while towing a trailer. But your experience may differ from other RV owners. Some have one color of transponder for one vehicle and they may have another color for their trailer. It also depends on the state you get the EZ Pass and how your Pass will work.

To learn more about this topic, just continue to read our article. It explores the issue so you can have the information you need before you travel those East Coast toll Roads. The news is all good.

Can I Use My EZ Pass While Towing a Trailer?

Can-I-Use-My-EZ-Pass-While-Towing-a-Trailer

The answer to this question is positive but it can get complicated. It seems that the different states involved in the EZ Pass system have a few different rules. This can affect how you go through the EZ Pass lane.

Some RV owners have discovered that their tow vehicle’s EZ Pass transponder covers both their tow vehicle and trailer. But that may be because they inputted the trailer’s license number when they bought their Pass.

Generally, you have to pick the option that allows you to configure your Pass’ transponder to include your trailer. You need to do this because trailers receive a different classification from the states involved in this system.

It is possible, and some RV owners have mentioned it, that you will get a discount for your trailer if you register it with the system. Check with your state to see all the options available.

How Does EZ Pass Work With a Trailer?

How-Does-EZ-Pass-Work-With-a-Trailer

There seem to be 4 EZ Pass options when it comes to towing a trailer, here are those 4 options:

1.  Buy a transponder for your trailer- this is separate from your tow vehicle, is linked to your account, and should be mounted on the front of the trailer. When your trailer goes through the toll booth the money will be automatically deducted from your account

2 . Use your tow vehicle’s transponder- this is done by connecting your trailer’s license to your transponder. This option can save you money by avoiding buying another transponder.

3. Buy a trailer plate transponder- connects your trailer’s license plate to the system and with it, your trailer will be assessed the correct fee

4. Buy a trailer pass- this is a sticker placed on your trailer’s license plate. However, you may have to pay an extra fee for this option

How do I Add a Trailer To My E-ZPass NJ?

How-do-I-Add-a-Trailer-To-My-E-ZPass-NJ

First, there is a trailer pass you can buy and the description goes like this:

“ Enrolled E-ZPass customers will receive a discount off the full fare off-peak and peak tolls on the Garden State Parkway only. Discount would apply to class 2 through class 5 vehicles that meet the requirements of a class 1 tag with additional axles (RV’s are eligible). This plan is offered to Private accounts only. Business and Commercial accounts are not eligible.”

So you have to be a private owner to access this pass. Also, you need to open an account with the New Jersey side of the system if you live in that state. From there you just follow all the instructions to add your trailer.

You can get those instructions from this link . If you have any more questions, use that website’ contact web page to ask them. Delaware and New York information is included when it intersects with New Jersey roads, etc.

EZ Pass With Trailer MA, NY, PA

EZ-Pass-With-Trailer-MA-NY-PA

For New York, you have to fill out an application form and check the type of trailer you will be towing. You can see that application form at this link . It seems that even if you do not have a trailer tag, the gantries are capable of determining the number of axles and the height of your vehicle. Then you will be charged accordingly.

For Massachusetts, you need to list the trailer’s license plate on your account, then their system will count the number of axles and charge you accordingly. Here is a link to the MA EZ Pass system .

It seems that Pennsylvania has a toll-by-plate system. You can register up to 4 license plates on a private account and this may include your trailer. If you have any questions contact the state office through this link .

Can I Use My VA E-ZPass While Towing a Trailer?

Can-I-Use-My-VA-E-ZPass-While-Towing-a-Trailer

In this state, you have to buy a separate trailer transponder to tow your trailer through the Virginia toll booths. Here is what they say:

“ You can switch the transponder from one vehicle to another as long as you use it on the same vehicle type. If you tow a trailer or a boat, your vehicle type will change and so you will need to get a different transponder.”

To find out all the information on costs, and procedure and to ask any questions, just click this link . The information above is found under the FAQ web page and after some scrolling to get to the right section.

Some Additional Words

As we said earlier, the EZ Pass system is governed by individual states and each state has its own rules and regulations. The websites also have information on how to use EZ Pass outside of your home state.

The cost will differ but in each case, you will have to have an original account that is pre-paid to avoid any problems with the system. In all cases, you can use EZ Pass to tow a trailer.

How much you will be charged will be up to the individual states participating in this system. For further NY information, click here . All websites should be able to answer all your questions.

Best RV Toll Pass for Travelling Through Multiple States

Best RV Toll Pass for Travelling Through Multiple States

Sharing is caring!

What is the best RV toll pass for traveling through multiple states? If you have traveled anywhere in the U.S. in your RV, you know that toll roads are everywhere.

Personally, we do our best to avoid them. However, sometimes we just don’t want to go too far out of our way. Sometimes what you save in time and gas will have to win out. You can use your Google Maps or Apple Maps to avoid them, but like a bad penny, they just keep turning up.

Some 38 states have toll roads, which includes Alaska. Hawaii does not have toll roads, just roads that take a toll on your sanity. Been there, done that.

Read on and let’s see if we can show you more about the best RV toll passes, including which ones are best for multiple states and more. There is a lot of confusing information regarding RV toll passes so let’s see if we can get it all sorted out.

Which RV Toll Pass Covers the Most States?

While toll passes are generally designed for a specific state, due to agreements with other states, they can be used in multiple states. There are three toll passes that cover most of the U.S.

Florida’s Sun Pass Pro can be used in 21 states and is accepted anywhere the E-ZPass is accepted, which is also 21 states.

Florida’s second toll pass is E-Pass, which is now known as UNI , and is accepted in 17 states. The Central Florida Expressway Authority operates UNI. Both can be used on all Florida toll roads, but not necessarily all toll roads in states outside of Florida.

Does E-ZPass Work on All Toll Roads in the USA?

E-ZPass does not work on all toll roads in the U.S. It will work in 21 states. Check your E-Z Pass website to get into the fine details.

Map answering Does E-ZPass Work on All Toll Roads in the USA?

How Much Do Toll Roads Cost in an RV?

One thing that you can do is plan ahead by looking up the fee chart on the toll roads you will be traveling on. Don’t forget to check out RV Life Trip Wizard . You tell the app where you want to go and you get a route based on choices. If you don’t want any toll roads, you can filter those out.

Traveling on a toll road with your RV can get expensive. Most tolls are based on the number of axles you have or It could also be based on weight. The gas you might expend to get around these might not be worth the time and trouble of avoiding them.

The RV Trip Wizard planning tool also shows you a safe route based on your rig’s exact measurements so you can avoid low-clearance bridges or roads that are unsafe for an RV such as those with steep grades.

Use the planner to search for points of interest including rest areas, fuel stations, overnight parking, and dump stations. You can also search for casinos with campgrounds, Walmarts, as well as amusement parks, museums, liquor stores, and more.

Some websites will also help you find out what the cost of the toll road will be ahead of time. I used TollGuru’s RV toll pass calculator to plan a trip from Arkansas to Maine.

The calculator added up my fuel costs and tolls which were around $20. You can also go to TollGuru’s List of Toll Tags For Each State. There you can see each state that has a toll road and which passes work for each state.

Do I Need a Separate Transponder for My Towed Vehicle on My Motorhome?

All vehicles passing through the tolls are required to pay. This causes some issues when it comes to motorhomes with a vehicle in tow.

One way RVers are getting around this is by blocking the towed vehicle’s transponder. Wrapping them in tinfoil or placing them in metal boxes or protective sleeves apparently works to save the extra charge.

For those with towables, your trailer doesn’t necessarily require a separate transponder, however, you may be charged for the extra axels. Different toll passes mixed with different states mean you’re going to want to confirm the requirements for your travel.

The Best RV Toll Passes for Multi-State Travel

The best toll passes are really the ones you need to get you to your next adventure. Some require that you receive a transponder, while others work by taking a picture of your vehicle and license plate. The information is relayed, and a bill will be sent to your address of record.

When we went to Maine last summer, in general, we didn’t have to stop and pay cash. We did not purchase a pass and had a bill waiting for us when we got our mail. A pass might have reduced our fees, but we knew it would probably be a long time before we traveled that way again.

3. RV Toll Pass

  • Home State: Independent
  • Canada Compatible: No

Just a few words about RVToll Pass . The website does indicate that this pass will work on 97% of toll roads in the U.S. Furthermore, if you open the site and click the button that says, “Where it Works” you will get a state-by-state accounting of where this particular pass works.

This is a third-party pass that will not only cost you the toll but a fee of around $15 a month as well, during months that the toll pass is being used.

4. National Pass

  • States It Works: 20 of 38

National Pass has several fees to use the service. In addition to the one-time account activation fee of $25, you must pay a monthly fee of $16, which includes a $3.50 fee per transponder.

If you’re looking for additional transponders, there will be a hardware access fee of $35 per new transponder. Additionally, National Pass requires a pre-paid account balance of $250 for the first transponder and $100 for each transponder.

Does My American E-ZPass Work In Canada?

To cross the border, RVers can contact E-ZPass to get an add-on transponder sticker that links to their account. When it comes to traveling in Canada, E-ZPass only works on certain toll roads.

RVers would benefit from the border sticker if they cross the border often to visit friends and family. If you only plan on crossing the border one or two times, it’s likely more paperwork and money than it’s worth.

Keep in mind, however, that without the add-on, E-ZPass only works at the border crossing toll area.

Is my American E-ZPass the best RV toll pass forCanada?

Can You Drive Across the US Without Paying Tolls?

Yes, you can drive across the US without paying tolls. We’ve probably done it, or at least tried to reduce our tolls at some point. Just remember, you will likely spend more on gas and take more time to get to your destination.

However, if that’s what you want, then you go right ahead. Those out-of-the-way roads are great places to find quaint cafes, oddball roadside attractions, as well as and much more!

Ever thought about driving through a toll area without paying? Don’t do it, all those cameras and monitors you see as you pass will get you. You’ll receive a notice and likely end up paying more due to late fees.

Tolls don’t generally add up to a lot of money even for RVs so save yourself the hassle and pay up.

Final Thoughts About RV Toll Passes

The subject of best RV toll passes isn’t a cut-and-dried topic. Most toll passes are for specific states and then have various agreements with other states, but not necessarily all states. Hopefully, your head isn’t spinning.

By getting your RV Life Trip Wizard subscription you’ll know exactly what toll roads are on the route you are planning. You can then do your research to find out the cost per axle, how weight will affect your fees, and how those fees will be managed. This will help determine whether it is worth getting a toll pass.

If you spend a lot of time traversing Florida, then you’re going to want the best RV toll pass. If you plan to spend several months on the east coast, it could also be a good investment. Head out west, with the exception of California, and you probably won’t need a toll pass.

Not a fan of encouraging people to skip paying a toll when they tow with their RV. Who is supposed to pay for the use of that road if you, the user, doesn’t? We have always had 2 transponders, one for the RV and one for the tow vehicle. We use the roads and the tow vehicle is still the same weight on the road. And if you get caught, you are looking at a much heftier fine than what the toll was. RVers are usually better than that. If you don’t want to pay the toll, don’t use the toll road. That solves your problem.

Good job guys 👍😎😎

I started with E-ZPass for the convenience on my motorcycle. When I bought the motorhome I contacted E-Zpass who suggested I get one for the motorhome not towing (based on the weight of the vehicle) and also use the pass in my toad. It’s the same cost for both vehicles as motorhome towing and I don’t need two transponders for the motorhome, using the correct one based on conditions.

tolls have gotten way out of hand and added cost for transponder and toll buy plates even worst in my county toll was 1 way on local bridge transponders available and toll booth but since pandemic the county fired the collectors and now toll by plate is 2 plus 3 convince fee and every day they send notice barely posted on the road so tourists a big part of the economy her get taken advantage of at least if they just send weekly with a 3 dollar fee would be fair but politicians are never fair especially it fleeced cannot vote i rarely use the toll bridge we have 1 free way into the city

E-ZPass Flex

EZPassFlex logo purple 2

E-ZPass Flex is an E-ZPass with an additional switchable feature designed specifically for those traveling on Express Lanes. This transponder will specifically benefit those who are traveling with the number of people in their vehicle required to qualify for an HOV discount (2 or 3 depending on the roadway).

flex transponder

When you have the required number of people in your vehicle for that roadway, you can simply slide the switch to the right and the Flex transponder will display "HOV ON." Do this before entering the roadway and you can ride the designated Express Lanes at a discounted toll rate. For those riding with fewer than the required number of people in the vehicle, just slide the switch all the way to the left, covering the words "HOV ON," and travel the designated Express Lanes at the posted toll rate. E-ZPass Flex also works like a standard E-ZPass on all other toll roads wherever E-ZPass is accepted regardless of the position of the switch.

E-ZPass Flex is currently used for discounts on roads in Virginia & North Carolina.  The special transponder can be obtained from the Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland Customer Service Centers.

EZ Pass and trailers

  • Add to quote

Guys, I'm looking for the latest info on towing a trailer (5x8 single axle) with EZ Pass (in NY and PA). I couldn't find much help on the EZ Pass websites. Do I have to go though manned booths, or can the system tell what I'm towing and bill me accordingly? Thanks a lot!

I never go through a manned both while towing nor do I ever see anyone else doing so with EZ pass. And I tow quite a bit.

I trailer quite a bit. Mostly from NY to VA, or up into the Adirondacks. I used to always just go through the highest speed option with my trailers. Then one day I got a letter from EZPASS that my account was terminated for skipping out on the toll. I read on EZPASS NY websight that you must go through a manned booth in NY, but not in the other states I frequent(every state has different rules fro trailers with EZPASS). Last night I stopped and talked to the booth attendant at a toll in NY. With a trailer you may enter a toll road at any EZPASS option. When you exit however you must go through a manned booth, and they will correct the toll to include the trailer. On a bridge you must go through a manned booth. For years I never had problems going with the high speed options, and then one day, EZPASS suspended me.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm interested in hearing what anyone else has observed.

ez pass travel trailer

I had an e-mail exchange with Pa EZ Pass concerning towing. They tell me in Pa you just go through the EZ Pass lane. The lanes are set up to weigh and count axles and adjust pricing accordingly.

Well I don't want to steer anyone wrong so I guess I have been very bad going through the Ezpass lanes with a trailer. Opps. Oh well looks like I need to go through the maned lanes from no on. Damn!

Here is the exact reply from the Pa EZ Pass System You can use E-ZPass and add a trailer or camper or a boat to your vehicle. The system will weigh the vehicle and count the number of axles to charge accordingly. On the Pennsylvania Turnpike, if the weight of the camper or trailer or boat pushes you into a higher class of vehicle, the higher toll will be charged to your account. If you are traveling on other E-ZPass agency toll roads or bridges, please contact the appropriate agency for further information.

I just go through the ezpass lane with the truck and trailer, both entering and exiting the NYS Thruway. Never had a problem or nasty note from ezpass.

Easypass with a trailer????

  • Add to quote

Anybody using easypass while towing a boat, what about the extra cost for the trailer. How does it work and is it worth getting it for bridge tolls..Thanks JK

I just got an EZ-Pass because of the extra cost for the trailer. According to the booklet they send you with the tranceiver, you only get charged the extra toll if the trailer puts you into the next higher weight class. It's a little vague, but a friend of mine who has been using it for years with a boat and a camper tells me that he's never gotten billed for the higher toll with the EZ-Pass.

Are you saying that he only pays the car toll not the extra 1.25 or what ever it may be

No, you dont pay for any extra axles or anything. Its cheaper with EZPass!

I think you get weighed before you enter the tolls, is the way it was explained to me.

I agree an ezpass does make using the pa turnpike a lot easier. The turnpike does detect the trailer and charges appropriately.

The GSP charges 50 cents when I pull a single axle trailer the toll booths with EZPass. Same for Del Mem bridge and 95 in both MD and DE. The TapanZee also see's the trailer.

Capt. Chad B. said: Yes, that is correct. You also want to make sure your trailer plate is registered on the E-pass account too just incase it does not register so they dont send you a crazy bill. Capt. Chad is correct,I just registered 2 weeks ago and asked about towing they ask for my trailer tags.It was'nt worth the chance of a fine to me. Click to expand...

Thanks for the responses, I'm probably going to get one just for the convenience of it...JK

My wifes new van, I had just registered it's tag number with EZpass, but I didn't have any Velcrow to put the transponder on the windshield. I had put it in the overhead storage compartment for sunglasses. I wanted to see if it would work in there. I mean they do tell you if you don't want to use it you have to put it in the special bag they send it to you in. When I went thru the booth it said EZpass not paid. When I got my monthly statement it just had the plate number instead of the transponder number and the regular charge. I've never registered any of my trailer's plates.

Ez Pass Is Definitely The Way To Go You will see, especially coming into the summer season, that depending on day of week(end), the toll lines can be a couple of blocks long sometimes, especially on the GSP and AC XWAY. With EZ PASS, you oft times bypass the entire 2 blocks in the EZPASS lane. Certain toll booths also have ALL lanes accepting EZ PASS. Example, AC XWAY. There are also express EZ PASS lanes at certain areas, 45 MPH. By all means, get it. It will cost you no more than paying tolls on your own. I have 4 EZ Passes for my 4 vehicles, the maximum they allow you.

If you trailer, get EZPass. No extra charge and no lines!!!

ive been trailoring my boat with an ez-pass and have never been charged any extra

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

  • Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!
  • Cost: USD $8.00
  • Food nearby: Moskovskiy Chaynyy Klub is a cozy cafe serving food items and pipping hot tea; it’s the perfect place to go if you’re visiting Moscow during the winter months!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

  • Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
  • Cost: Free to enter
  • Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

GUM Department Store

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
