Cow to cup: Agritourism a backstage pass at Hansen’s Dairy

Meta Hemenway-Forbes, Hansen’s Dairy Marketing Manager

hansen's dairy farm tours

Agritourism at Hansen’s Dairy aims to educate visitors on how milk gets from our cows to their cups.

Twenty years ago, Hansen’s Dairy Farm gave impromptu tours to a few hundred visitors each summer. A quick phone call could generate a same-day tour, provided a Hansen family member who wasn’t tending to the cows or the fields was available.

A dotted-nose calf greeted visitors during the Hansen’s Dairy 2023 tour season.

Visitors were given a walking tour of the Hudson farm to pet calves, cows and wallabies (the farm’s first   mascot). They convened afterward for samples of Hansen’s Dairy products in the farm’s repair shop that doubled as a makeshift tour center.

“There wasn’t an easily accessible bathroom or hand-washing station. We had people washing their hands in the sink where calf bottles are washed,” Jordan Hansen recalls, laughing. Hansen is co-owner and bookkeeper for the farm.

The dairy farm quickly outgrew its burgeoning agritourism arm. As the number of visitors to the farm increased, so did the need for more space, staff and structure. Today, the farm hosts thousands of visitors during its annual April 1-Oct. 31 tour season. Other annual events , like the Farm to Table Dinner, Down on the Farm Breakfast and A Very Dairy Christmas, draw hundreds more.

Stories of agriculture

It’s a similar story for many farms across the country.

Farm agritourism revenue more than tripled between 2002 and 2017,  a ccording to the 2017 U.S. Census of Agriculture. Nationally, 28,575 farms offer some form of agritourism — tours, events or farm-to-table direct sales. Of those farms, 2,873 are in Iowa. Data for the 2022 census, conducted by Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences, has not yet been released.

A young girl meets Lapan the cow during the 2022 Down on the Farm Breakfast at Hansen’s Dairy Farm. Tickets to the annual event sell out nearly every year.

Global agritourism market growth is driven, in part, by increasing demand from tourists who want to experience rural life along with government initiatives that promote agritourism, says a Zion Market Research report. Case in point: The Iowa Agricultural Tourism Promotion Act  was signed into law in 2021 to help boost agritourism in the Hawkeye State. The Zion report predicts continued strong growth in the industry nationally over the next several years.

20 years of tours

Hansen’s Dairy tours have certainly come a long way from their humble beginnings. Today, the farm has a dedicated tour center where educational displays line the walls. Parking space is plentiful, and a third-party booking system replaced the overwhelming number of incoming phone calls for tour requests. A tractor-drawn trolley now ferries visitors to the farm and additional tour guides have been hired to handle the influx. Kangaroos have replaced wallabies as the farm’s official mascot.

In 2022, nearly 9,000 visitors from all over the world toured Hansen’s Dairy Farm, a seismic leap from two decades ago.

Among them are hundreds of students from Iowa classrooms who take field trips to learn about dairy farming.

Silos & Smokestacks

Some of those student tours are funded by a grant through Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area based in Northeast Iowa. Silos & Smokestacks is one of 62 National Heritage Areas across the country, and the only NHA dedicated to telling and preserving the stories of agriculture.

“It’s amazing how many people aren’t really aware where their food, fuel and clothing come from. Every moment of our lives comes from agriculture somehow,” said Jori Wade-Booth, Silos & Smokestacks marketing and communications director.

Hansen’s Dairy is among dozens of Silos & Smokestacks’ Iowa partner sites . The partnerships are a win-win exchange of ideas and resources.

“We provide education for those sites and best practices for history preservation and finding funding,” Wade-Booth said, noting   Silos & Smokestacks’ partnership with the National Parks Service helps drive traffic to its Iowa partner sites.

“We have so many innovations in Iowa,” she added. “Iowa’s agriculture is part of the leading industry in our country’s birth. Our farming industry has deep and important historical roots, and our connection with the National Parks Service lets us share those stories nationally.”

Hansen’s Dairy roots run deep in Iowa, too. The farm has been in the Hansen family for more than 150 years. The Hansen brothers who own and run the farm — Brent, Brad, Blair and Blake — are the sixth generation of Hansens to do so.

Bottle feeding a calf is part of a Hands-on Tour of the farm.

Next year marks the farm’s 20th tour season. Though many things have changed since the dairy first began offering tours, the motivation to open the barn doors and let the public in remains the same.

“It’s so much more than seeing cows and kangaroos and having ice cream,” Hansen said. “People get to come on this tour and see where the cows live and what they eat. You really learn the story behind the milk that goes into the jug. We want to be transparent about how our products are made and how they get to your table.”

Disclaimer: Our visit was hosted, however, all opinions expressed in this article are completely ours and based on our own family’s unique experience.

Visiting an Iowa farm is always a rewarding and unique experience. Hansen’s Dairy is listed as a Silos and Smokestacks Heritage site.

Educators and teachers will find a wealth of information on the Hansen’s Dairy blog including videos on how to make butter, ice cream, and cheese. Milk bottling, triplet baby calves, and a ‘ Hansen’s Farm Fresh Dairy Quiz’ are a few of the other fabulous resources.

Our Tour Experience

Tour experiences will vary depending on the type of tour you choose. The cool spring morning that we visited included petting the calves and kangaroos and also learning about the milking parlor and creamery. We greatly enjoyed our visit and know you will too.

We started out our visit with petting the kangaroos. This was a unique experience and a highlight of our whole week! You might have seen some social media posts floating around that claim Iowa has a kangaroo farm. Well, that’s not the complete truth. There isn’t a kangaroo farm but there is a farm with kangaroos!

These special kangaroos are family pets of Blake Hansen and his family. Blake fell in love with the animals after a trip to Australia. Talk about a memorable souvenir!  After adding to their herd, the Hansen family welcomed baby Roodolph who will celebrate his 1st birthday in 2020. Proud parents Rocket (dad) and Scooter (mom) also have one other baby named Rocky. Roodolph was hand-raised in the Blake’s home until he was ready to be integrated into the kangaroo pen.

If your kids are begging for a new pet, just know a female kangaroo can cost around $3000 to purchase.

hansen's dairy farm tours

In addition to the kangaroos, we loved petting the six-week-old calves. We were not visiting during feeding time, but would love to come back for a chance to bottle feed a calf.

hansen's dairy farm tours

Hansen’s Dairy milking parlor is unique because it was one of the first in the state of Iowa to be attached to a barn. This allows the cows to be milked, fed, and lay down all under one roof. Each cow is given their own stall for rest and access to an outdoor lot. All the cows in the Hansen herd get their own special name which is written on their tag.

The cows are milked twice daily, at 4:00 A.M. and 3:30 P.M. Sixteen of the 150 (average) cows are milked in the parlor at one time. The milking process for the entire heard, with clean-up, takes two-three hours depending on how many cows are in production. Each cow is only milked for around five minutes and produces around five gallons.

Math Word Problem Challenge :

In the milking parlor, sixteen cows are milked at 4:00 A.M. and again at 3:30 P.M. for five minutes and produce five gallons each time. How much milk is collected from sixteen cows each day?

If the farmer has 150 cows in production, how many minutes are cows being milked in a week?

A gallon of milk weighs about 8 pounds. How many pounds of milk would 16 cows produce each day?

hansen's dairy farm tours

Adhering to safety and sanitation guidelines, guests do not enter the creamery but can view activity through a large glass window. Inside the creamery, Hansen’s Dairy employees process milk, make butter, cheese curds, cream  and other products.

Making ice cream is a two day process and finishes with mixing in one or more of over 20 flavors. Much of the work is not automated and preformed by hand. The ice cream starts as a vanilla or chocolate base, then workers will add in other ingredients, concentrating on making only a few flavors at one time.

Returning to the Tour Center, guests can mark their location on several maps, including a wold map. With a cozy country vibe, there are plenty of fun things to look at.  A test kitchen is used for continued learning. Kids can make butter, sample milk, ice cream, and cheese curds.

Visiting Hansen’s Dairy Farm is a great way to enjoy delicious treats, have unique animal encounters, and make special family memories. Add this destination to your Eastern Iowa travel plans!

What a fun combination of cows and kangaroos!

Who knew the two could go together? 🙂

What a fun, educational outing to Hansen’s Dairy in Hudson, Iowa. I had no idea there were any kangaroos in the Midwest, much less darling baby kangaroos.

You get to feed them too! A truly unique experience.

We love Hansen’s Dairy! The ice cream is superb!

We gobbled ours down! 😉

Hansen's Dairy Farm

Hansen’s Dairy Farm Tour in Hudson, Iowa

A few months back I found out about Hansen’s Dairy Farm which is located near Waterloo, Iowa.  Obviously, it’s a dairy farm so there are cows and you get a chance to milk them and feed them. However, one very unique thing about this place was that there were kangaroos. I mean, they’re not a part of the dairy process or anything. One owner has some they incorporate into the tours, and that’s really why I wanted to visit if I’m being honest. I’ve lived in Iowa for 38 years so I’ve been around my share of cows. However, I’ve only ever dreamt of going to Australia to see koalas and kangaroos. Since that obviously isn’t going to be able to happen this year, I needed to visit this dairy farm! (This is NOT a sponsored post!)

Yes, there's kangaroos at this dairy farm!

When my brother came to visit for a week, I figured it was a great opportunity to visit the farm! I knew my nieces would enjoy seeing the cows because that’s not something you really get to do in Chicago often, and I knew the kangaroos would be the icing on the cake for both of us! So, I got us tickets for the Hands-On Tour! The tour was going to show us how things worked on the farm, allow us to actually milk a cow, bottle feed baby cows, and, of course, see the kangaroos.  Then we would also get a chance to make butter and try some delicious ice cream!

Hansen’s Dairy Farm

So, a little about the farm.  This farm has been in the family since 1864 with the fifth, sixth and seventh-generations working on it now. The fifth-generation has four sons and the jobs around the farm are split between them. One delivers the products, one makes the products in the creamery, one manages the crops and cow nutrition and the last one milks and cares for the cows.

They have 300 purebred Holsteins in their closed herd at Hansen’s Dairy Farm, with 150 being milked and 150 as fill-ins/replacements.  Each cow is named using the first letter of their mother’s name and has its own personality.  They use artificial insemination and a cow will have its first calf at 2 years old.  The cows in this herd don’t just wander around grazing on grass.  Instead, the farm grows its own food for them on their 400 acres.  The feed includes hay silage, corn silage, distillers grain, high-moisture corn, canola, and vitamins.  They are not given any growth hormones! One cow will consume 90 pounds of feed and 40 gallons of water a day. That produces about 10 gallons of milk a day from each cow.

hansen's dairy farm tours

The cows are milked twice a day, at 4:00 am and at 3:30 pm. There is a 16-stall milking parlor that the cows will walk into that allows the workers to clean their utters and attach something that will pump the milk out. In the 5 minutes it takes to empty a cows utter, they will produce about 5 gallons of milk and drop about 40 pounds! The milk will come out of the cow at 101 degrees. It’s then chilled to 38 degrees in a bulk tank until it is ready to go to the on-farm creamery.

My niece was a champ at milking the cow!

“Legendairy” Products

At the creamery on Hansen’s Dairy Farm, the milk will go through a cream separator that will help clarify it and remove some fat.  They will then package the cream collected from the separator as heavy whipping cream, or use it to make butter or ice cream.  The remaining milk then gets pasteurized, which means that they heat it to 164 degrees for 15 seconds to eliminate bacteria. Now the milk is ready to be bottled!  Each week they will produce approximately 7,500 gallons of milk.  And the chocolate milk they make is especially delicious!

SO MUCH FUN!

Now, how do they make their delicious ice cream?  First they will use the cream that was collected during the separator process and mix that with egg yolks, skim milk, sugar, non-fat dry powdered milk and a stabilizer.  The mix is then pasteurized, aged for 12 hours and then chilled to 22 degrees.  Next they’ll add in any flavors or treats to the mix.  Think mint flavor, cookie dough chunks, chocolate chunks, etc.  Then the ice cream is packaged and flash frozen to -30 degrees and distributed!  They make 20 flavors of the hard ice cream throughout the year and I love the coffee one!

Hands-On Tour

Me milking the cow at Hansen's Dairy Farm.

So, let’s take the tour.  First, we met at the tour center for an introduction and then boarded a trolley pulled by a tractor and were taken to where the cows were.  We visited a small room that was the inside/middle of the milking parlor. (Since we took this tour during the Covid reopening time, in this small space we were required to wear masks.) While our guide explained the milking process we were able to watch the milking machines in action.  We were then given an opportunity to go down and actually milk one of the cows by hand!  After this, we saw a little of the creamery (through windows) and headed over where the cows were enjoying some delicious food.

Slowly approach the cows and they might let you pet them.

We were told we could pet the cows’ heads.  You had to hold your hand out to let them smell you, and then very slowly move your hand up to their heads.  I got two of them to let me pet them briefly.  Then we went where the baby cows were and were able to bottle feed them.  Those babies were so hungry! I fed Mahones and she was born on May 27th (so not even a month old at this time).  Both of my nieces loved getting to hold the bottles and feed the cows, although sometimes it looked like a game of tug-o-war.

Feeding a baby cow at Hansen's Dairy Farm.

Across the way is where the babies went when they got a little older. It’s kind of like school where they get a chance to make friends and interact with the other cows their own ages.  Here they are kept in one larger pen together, share food and water, and have free stalls where they can rest.

Hansen's Dairy Farm has kangaroos on the property as well!

Now, this part of the tour was what I was personally looking forward to the most.  One of the sons, Blake, fell in love with the Kangaroos and Wallabies when he visited Australia. He then purchased some Wallabies from New Zealand to come and live with his family at the farm. After that, they got Red Kangaroos, and currently have 5 and one tiny joey in a pouch! I was so surprised by how soft they were!  Unfortunately, I’m a little too nice so I didn’t get as much time to pet or try to feed them as the others, but I did see the joey’s face and my nieces loved it! Totally worth it!

Dream come true!

Tour Center Activities

After all of this, we hopped (haha, get it) back onto the trolley and went back to the tour center.  Here we were given small jars with buttercream in them and were told to make butter.  You don’t want to shake it until there’s no liquid left, just until most of it has globbed together. Then we poured out the remaining cream, added water, poured that out, and then we had butter!  And it was good! So good that my mother and I purchased some tubs of butter (not that we made) to take home!

I made butter at Hansen's Dairy Farm.

Then we got to try some of the ice cream and chocolate milk!  There was a list of a few different ice creams we could try.  I had coffee, my mother had lemon, my brother and sister-in-law had mint chocolate chip, and my nieces had chocolate. The servings were pre-packaged and not tiny, but luckily they had some smaller ones for the little kids.  We had to buy some to take home as well since it was so good. We got coffee and cookie dough, and then my mother and I split the two so we each could take some of both home. Seriously, its so good!

Hansen's Dairy Farm Ice Cream

My thoughts on Hansen’s Dairy Farm Tours

The price for the hands-on tour was $15/person age 4 and older, and 3 and younger was free. Honestly, I think that the price of $15 to get to milk a cow, feed a baby, and pet a kangaroo was very reasonable.  But then you toss in the making butter experience (and getting to try what you made with crackers), the taste of chocolate milk, and the not so small serving of ice cream, and it’s definitely a bargain.  At the tour center, you can purchase their products including the milk, ice cream, butter, cheese curds, and heavy cream.  They also support many other local businesses, so we were thrilled when we saw they were selling the maple syrup that we get from the farmer’s market (that I was just saying I needed to get more of).

Hansen's Dairy Farm kangaroos

Overall this was a great experience at Hansen’s Dairy Farm.  My nieces, who live near Chicago, enjoyed all the new experiences. Even my mother and I, who have lived in Iowa for 38-40 years each enjoyed it! Since we both live here, we do hope to visit the farm again.  Perhaps we’ll take my other nieces to visit, or perhaps just the two of us will go! If you’re around the Waterloo area of Iowa or willing to take a little drive, I would definitely recommend this 2-hour tour and visiting this farm!

How strange to find kangaroos in Iowa. But then, I never did see one when we visited Australia!!! I am not sure I would want to milk the cow. But I would definitely enjoy all the dairy products! I think a tour is a great fun idea for kids! Glad your nieces had fun.

You didn’t see any in Australia!?!? I would not stand for that! I have a couple of sanctuaries there that I plan on visiting when I finally make it down under!

A tour well worth the cost, interesting and fun for all ages. We learned and experienced so much in a short time. Make you you prepare kids in advance about what farms are about and expect smells and dirt but also direct contact with the animals, hands-on fun making milking cows and making butter, plus eating delicious ice cream. Tour guides are knowledgable, kind, and accommodating.

I love the tour they give and especially the butter at the dairy farm. They have ice cream and milk.

A great family day out! We thoroughly enjoyed the petting tour & it was an awesome experience for our 2 year old. We got to make the most delicious butter ever & taste the yummy cheese, milk, & ice cream too. We'll be going back soon!

I took my grandkids here for a breakfast event. The price was very reasonable. It was $33 for the four of us. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate, it was cold and rainy, but the fun was not hindered in the least. When we got there, we were greeted by someone in a kangaroo costume handing out candy which really got the kids in the mood. While we werevstandung in line to get our food, one of the owners chatted with my 4 year old grandson telling him about the farm. The breakfast was served buffet style with ham, pancakes, cornbread muffins, yogurt with granola, apples slices, and an assortment beverages which included their delicious milk. In the garagevwhere we dined, they had grace painting and a picture prop for the kids with a kangaroo with a cow in it's pouch for them to put their faces in the picture. We then boarded the wagon to be taken to the barns. On the journey one of the family members told us about the farm and how it was run. When we got to the barns there were games for the kids to get prizes. The chocolate milk flavored lip gloss was a hit. They also had an old fashioned corn shelled for them to play with and they got to twist twine into a rope. We continued on to the barns where they fell in love with the new born calves. Most about a month old. My grand-daughter was thrilled to find a chocolate cow(it was brown) and they really had fun petting and interacting with them. We got to go out to see the kangaroos but couldn't go in to play with them because of the weather. They were ecstatic to watch the pregnant one and see her pouch moving with the new baby in it. Hansen's dairy is truly a great interactive place for kids as well as being educational. We hope to make it back on a nice day to spend more time.

The kids loved getting to milk a cow and feed the baby cows. This is will a place our kids will always remember. If you're looking for something fun to do with family or friends, we highly recommend scheduling a trip here.

Much more than just a dairy farm! Hansen's Dairy is located in rural Iowa outside of the small town of Hudson. It is advertised as dairy, but is really so much more. Upon arriving, one can look upon the green prairies and a beautiful blue lake. The actual store is full of dairy goods made on site. This includes six varieties of fresh cheese curds, milk (skim, 1%, 2%, whole, and 1% chocolate), heavy whipping cream, and house made ice cream in 20 flavors. Also sold are various products from local businesses/farms. The prices are very reasonable, as the company also has two retail locations and sells their goods in local grocery stores. Best of all, the farm offers a $15 tour. At first, one might think that $15 is too much for a farm tour. However, the tour includes a brief history of the farm, milking a cow, touring the processing facility, feeding a calf, and viewing the cows up close. But wait, you also get to not only see, but pet their kangaroos. Yes. You heard me right. This dairy farm is home to 5 kangaroos, which makes it very unique. After this, you will return to the main store, where you will be shown a video on farm processes, fed cheese curds, make your own butter, and be given an 8 ounce tub of ice cream. On top of this, the farm also has Wagyu/Holstein mix cows that produce some quality marbled beef. Overall, if you find yourself drifting through eastern Iowa, this is a great place to visit for the day. You can also find their products in Iowa with a kangaroo as their logo.

This was an absolute treasure. The baby animals were amazing, the behind the scenes milking tour was terrific, but the free food at the end was the icing on the cake. I can not recommend this enough. You will not be disappointed. #hansensdairyforever

Family Fun at Hansen’s Dairy Farm

By: Author Melissa

Posted on Last updated: July 10, 2023

Home » Entertainment » Family Fun at Hansen’s Dairy Farm

If you are looking for a fun place to take the whole family that is both educational and full of excitement, I suggest heading over to Hansen’s Dairy Farm.

Not only will you learn how your dairy products are made but you get a real hands-on experience at the dairy farm that lets you interact with cows and even kangaroos.

That wasn’t a typo, I actually fed a kangaroo at a dairy farm in Iowa.

I never thought I would put those words together but that is just one of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that were made possible by visiting Hansen’s.

Hansen's Dairy Farm

I was blown away by how soft they were and how they moved around. I never thought I would see a kangaroo up close let alone pet and feed one….in Iowa.

This was my husband’s favorite part of the tour.

kangaroos in iowa

My daughter and I love to see cows even though living in Iowa you pass them almost every day while driving, we still get excited every time we see them.

When we found out that we were going to be bottle-feeding a baby cow, we couldn’t wait to hop on the trolley at Hansen’s Dairy Farm and start the tour!

Tour Bus in Iowa

While touring the dairy farm, our tour guide taught us all about the Hansen family and the history of the farm.

We were able to ask questions along the way and I was surprised how fast they had an answer to even some of the most unexpected questions.

Hansen's Dairy farm

When purchasing milk at the grocery store I often see homogenized on all of the milk jugs for sale. I didn’t even know what that meant until we took this fun-filled tour at Hansen’s.

Did you know that homogenization breaks down the molecules of milk, which destroys its natural state?

Hansen’s milk is non-homogenized and that means even some people with lactose intolerance say they can consume Hansen’s products with no ill effects!

That is great news for anyone that has had to avoid dairy products in the past and they are in for a real treat when they try any of Hansen’s products.

Hansen's Dairy Farm

My daughter and I loved bottle-feeding the baby cows the most. Who wouldn’t?

Although there is so much more to see, it is worth the trip out to Hansen’s Dairy Farm just to be able to experience this once in your life.

Hansen's Dairy Farm

Speaking of once in a lifetime experience, we got to milk a cow! Everyone on the tour got a chance and I think the adults enjoyed it as much as the kids did!

Not only did we see where the milk comes from but we also learned how it is used in all of the delicious products Hansen’s has to offer including, ice cream, cheese curds, and butter.

We were thrilled to try a sample of each of these products and we even got to make our own butter!

Hansen's Dairy Farm making ice cream

We each received a jar with cream inside and we were told to shake it. We were given crackers and salt to taste the butter once it was ready.

You could tell most of us were skeptical about this process working out, which means most people don’t even know where their food comes from or how it is made.

That is reason enough to take a trip to Hansen’s and bring the whole family!

My mom shook her jar like crazy and had tons of fun doing it. She was blown away by the results and this was her favorite part of our tour of Hansen’s Dairy Farm.

Hansen's Dairy Farm

While watching an interesting short video on how the products are made, we received samples of the products and my favorite was the Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!

fresh ice cream from farm

It was so creamy and I am willing to bet it was the freshest Ice Cream I have ever had!

I’m glad I can purchase these products at several retailers and even enjoy them at some of my favorite restaurants.

Hansen's Dairy Farm

If you are looking for a fun day that the whole family will enjoy be sure to visit Hansen’s Dairy Farm in Hudson, Iowa.

Wow this looks like such an amazing hand's on experience! I wouldn't expect to see kangaroos at a dairy farm! The ice cream looks absolutely delicious- I want a bowl!

Aww those kangroos are so cute. I wish I had the opportunity to see some of those. It looks like you guys had a great time at the farm. I miss going on thos farm field trips when you are in school. Surprisingly none of my kids have had any so far. I'll have to look for a dairy farm near us for a visit soon.

Joanne T Ferguson

What a fun experience for the whole family! What better way to spend quality time together making memories! Your litte one's face says it all!

Tuesday 11th of August 2015

Oh wow, what a neat experience for the kids. I grew up on a small farm. We use to have cows and all kinds of animals. When my dad retired, he still takes care of his cows and chickens.

Ourfamilyworld

What fun you had at the farm! I never knew what homogenized meant until you explained it. That is good to know. From now on I will check the labels of the milk I am buying.

Does it sound fun to see where your milk, cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products come from? Farms and homesteads across the United States offer dairy farm tours where your classroom, homeschool group, scout troop, tour bus, or family can get a first-hand look at operations on a dairy farm.

You’ll visit the barns and see how the animals live, walk along the pasture, or take a wagon ride. Many adventure tours let you see cows milked by robots allowing them to milk at will. There are opportunities to feed calves, pet baby goats, and even join a summer camp. You’ll see how milk is bottled and how cheese and butter are made.

Hansen's Dairy Farm offering delicious dairy and kangaroos in Iowa.

About Hansen’s Dairy Farm

The Hansen’s Dairy Farm is currently being run by the seventh generation of Hansen’s making this farm being a part of the Hansen family since 1864. Currently, four Hansen sons work on the farm and are designated different jobs to make sure the farm and creamery stay in operation. Each son and their family live on the farm or in Hudson, Iowa just a few miles down the road.

Hansen’s Dairy Farm provides cheese curds, milk, butter, hard ice cream, soft serve ice cream, egg nog, and ice cream cakes.

Why kangaroos? Kangaroos serve as the mascot for Hansen’s Dairy Farm. One of the co-owners, Blake Hansen, visited Australia and fell in love with the kangaroos down under. When he returned home he decided he needed them as pets.

Although the kangaroos were extra special, the entire farm tour was pretty amazing. I was impressed with how much of an inside look we had to experience on the tour.
