Is the Pirate’s Voyage Show in Myrtle Beach Worth It?

  • Pinterest 504

This Pirate’s Voyage review will help you decide whether the Myrtle Beach attraction is right for your family’s next beach trip. Thanks to our friends at Dollywood for hosting us for this fun event.

The pirate set for the Pirate's Voyage Dinner Show.

When traveling on a family vacation with tweens, it can get a little more challenging each year to find things to do that every member of the family enjoys at the same time.

During our recent family trip to Myrtle Beach, we got the chance to check out the Pirate’s Voyage dinner show as they launch their 10th season. It was by far our favorite experience from the entire weekend.

When I asked my youngest what she would tell other moms planning trips for their families about Pirate’s Voyage, she earnestly replied:

“It has everything you need! Food, family, and fun.”

She’s not wrong. How can you even argue that? I love that my little lady values the “family” portion of that statement so much that she included it as an essential for a good time.

The Pirate’s Voyage is a Dolly Parton production with locations in both Myrtle Beach and Pigeon Forge, TN. If anyone knows a thing about how to entertain a crowd, it is Miss Dolly Parton.

The kids were gasping, cheering, and laughing all throughout the show. At one point my daughter shouted: “Is that actually real?!”

Totally grinning, I glanced over at my husband to see his jaw hanging open and his eyes bulging wide.

We honestly couldn’t even believe what we were seeing on stage and our high expectations for the evening were far exceeded.

Every member of our family gives the show a hearty two thumbs up, we definitely recommend a visit if you happen to be in Myrtle Beach this year.

Want to know if the Pirate’s Voyage show is right for your family? Be sure to get the full details in my review below.

A complete Pirate’s Voyage review for families with kids:

What is the pirate’s voyage dinner show.

One part Vegas show plus one part Hollywood action movie meets one part family dinner night.

Imagine Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow performing with a Cirque du Soleil troupe over a 15-foot-deep indoor lagoon with movie-style stunts and special effects.

All while your family sits back and enjoys a 4-course meal delivered to your seats by pirate wenches.

The daring adventure features sword fights, blazing cannons, mystical mermaids and pirates scaling high above two full-sized pirate ships fighting to win Davy Jones’ coveted sunken treasure. The show is an epic battle for lost treasure on land, on deck, and in the water. Daring dock diving dogs, salty sea lions and tropical birds join in the quest and are truly a highlight of the experience.

Who will enjoy the live performance most?

This theater experience definitely caters to families with kids. While I’m pretty sure Tim and I would have loved it on our own for a date night, we really loved having the whole family attend.

TWEENS & TEENS:

There’s enough swashbuckling action to keep older kids engaged throughout the show. Our girls especially loved the live animals and special effects which included fire, fog, and cannons booming.

KIDS UNDER 8:

There are a few audience participation moments in the show that are included specifically for younger kids. The littles we saw helping out all seemed to be having the time of their lives.

Is it too scary? Some of the action sequences are very intense with loud booms and flashing lights. There is a scene where the theater gets really dark and the performers wear glow-in-the-dark skeleton suits that could frighten more timid kids.

Nothing bad happens to anyone in the show but there are action-packed sword fights where some pirates pretend to get stabbed and thrown into the water. There is no fake blood or anything gory at all and these scenes move super fast with no dwelling on anyone being injured.

Will both girls and boys like this show?

I can emphatically say there is something for everyone here.

The pirate crews are made up of both men and women pirates. The women are just as daring and adventurous as their counterparts, not just damsels in distress. I loved that one lady was Captain of a pirate ship.

On the other hand, there are sparkly mermaids and a bit of romance worked into the show as well. It isn’t all action, all the time.

For all four members of my family, the live animals were the biggest hit. It was such a fun surprise every time they’d pop up in the performance.

Where is the dinner theater?

You’ll find the Pirate’s Voyage theater at:

8907 N Kings Hwy Myrtle Beach, SC 29572 United States (US) Phone: (843) 497-9700

We were pleased to find ample parking in the theater lot so that doesn’t need to be a concern.

How to get tickets to the show and when to arrive:

You can order your tickets to the dinner show online at the Pirate’s Voyage web site here .

Depending on the timing of your trip, there are between 1 – 3 showtimes available. To take full advantage of your tickets, we highly recommend arriving at least an hour early before your show for the pre-show entertainment.

While you wait for the theater doors to open, you’ll find beverage and snack service along with live performances, face painting opportunities, and more.

NOTE: If you get tickets for seats in the first row, there’s a small chance you’ll get splashed during the show. Some of the pirates can get a bit feisty and do belly flops into the water. We didn’t get soaked, but a bit of a splash happened at the end of our meal that required extra napkins to mop up a bit. The amazing view was well worth it though.

pirates voyage reviews myrtle beach

What food is included in your pirate dinner?

The dinner service during Pirate’s Voyage was wonderful. Our waitress took care of everything while we relaxed and watched the performance.

When you arrive at your seat, you’ll find your plate and a fork with napkins already waiting. The server comes through with each element of the dinner one item at a time so you always have something to nibble on while watching the show.

Our soda glasses never ran dry, she was always there with a refill.

A bar server also comes through taking orders for adult beverages if you desire. I tried a frozen peach-rum concoction that was out of this world and was served in a souvenir mug that my kids are currently fighting over.

The Pirate’s Voyage dinner menu includes:

  • Fresh cheese biscuit, served warm
  • Creamy veggie soup, served in a mug to sip
  • Half a “cackler,” a pirate version of a roasted chicken. This was by far my daughter’s favorite item.
  • Pulled pork with BBQ sauce served on the side
  • Herb basted potato, our server called it a pirate french fry. Ha!
  • Cob of corn
  • Light and flaky apple turnover

It was more food than any of us could finish, you definitely will not go hungry.

Special dietary considerations:

This is the standard dinner meal that comes with your tickets but they do offer both a vegetarian and gluten-free dinner menu option if you need it. Just be sure to mention it at the time of your reservation.

Went tonight with family (wife, 18yo son and 14yo daughter). We paid extra for better seats and sat in "C1" area. We got there by 4:20 to get our tix and get in line for good seats to the pre-show. It was a great family night out. Meal was good and plentiful and the show was entertaining. So highly recommend if you are looking for something different while in MB. Couple suggestions.... - Get there early for the pre-show. Go upstairs and get seats to watch the pre-show. You can see everything just fine vs if you are on the floor. - Why upstairs....that's the closet to the door to enter the main theater. Non premium seats inside for the show are first come, first serve...so being upstairs for the pre show will help you get good seats. - Even if you get premium seats, they are just for that row section. So early you get to your row, the better seat. - To be honest, if you don't want to pay for the premium seats, your view/show experience will be just as fun / enjoyable. Very enjoyable night out, great fun

Omg what a magical moment. Had never been to a Diner And Show and it was the best experience ever!!!! All the seats are perfect You can see the whole stage from everywhere you seat. Great food and drinks Interaction with the show from the kids in the audience was so cute I really recommend.

Always enjoy the show. Food is good for serving such a huge crowd. Drinks are usually flat though. We attend a about once a year.

When I first heard about a pirate show, I wasn't expecting anything that great and it seemed overpriced, but then we went and it totally exceeded my expectations and was worth every penny. The performers are so talented and i felt like every minute was another amazing surprise. It was an incredible show, and the 4 kids ages 12-16 all said this was their favorite part of the vacation, even more than the amusement park and parasailing! The food was delicious, but was surprised they didn't have a kids meal option, its a lot of food for a little kid, especially picky eaters. We got the VIP seats, which means they put you in a row thats closer, it didn't seem like there were any bad seats, but there wasn't much of a price difference, so might as well get the closer seats. Overall it was great experience and would recommend this as a must do for your Myrtle beach vacation!

Exquisite. Breathtaking. Totally unique. One of a kind. Highlight of my life. Whimsical Masterpiece. I saw this show with my friend and her grandmother, we were in awe. This show changed our lives and changed our perspectives on pirates and mermaids. Before the show, we were closed minded people, but after we came out with opened minds thinking about the possibilities of the mysteries of the ocean. The food was to the perfection of a meal cooked by Gordon Ramsey himself. Walking into the pirate sing a long before the show, set the mood for the rest of our magical experience. This show suits anyone from age 3 to 103, so if you have family visiting Myrtle beach, come on down to good ol pirates voyage!!!! You will make memories and get pictures that will last a lifetime. PERIODT (we will be back in August, coupons would be very nice!) Stay safe everybody!

Photo of Alex N.

The show was entertaining. Food was subpar. Service was great. However, we were packed in like sardines and you can't get out to use the bathroom. Worst dining experience in my opinion. Would only go back if I got the last row of seats. Also, wait staff shoved everyone out of the way when we were exiting. Very unprofessional and unsafe. I prefer Medieval Times due to better seating and ushering people in and out. Also, it was very hot inside for a summer showing.

Photo of Ashley F.

Loved the show! It was filled with all sorts of entertainment. The food wasn't necessarily the best I've ever had, but the show made up for that. There's really no bad seat, as there is so much going on during the entire show. Loved the sea lion too!

pirates voyage reviews myrtle beach

This was our third adventure with grand kids (over the years). I would suggest arrive 4pm to get good pre-show seats. (Un-assigned doors open 4:30). You have opportunity to pay for pirate or princess dress up and/or buy souvenirs before show (great idea to beat crowd afterwards).. Dinner ok. Chicken was salty this time. Waiter 'Dan' great! They serve a cream based vegetable soup, 1/2 baked potatoe, roll (cheesy taste), ice tea, water, or Pepsi, Apple pie turnover for desert, they do offer bag to take home left overs. Show amazing. Lots of booms and light adventure, acrobatics, and always look at entire area!

We were visiting Myrtle Beach right after Thanksgiving. We got deeply discounted tickets ($10 each), so the three of us were able to go for under the cost of dinner elsewhere. We were not overly thrilled with it being a Christmas show (I mean, pirates and Christmas? Uh, no). But, we read it was a take on A Christmas Carol, so we decided to give it a go. We figured that the food would be so-so (we have been to Medieval Times) and we knew the show would be corny, cheesy, and cringe-worthy (I mean, anything by Dolly Parton would have to be). Let me just say, we were there in the off season, so we were sounded by bus loads of elderly tourists. Not an issue, just was really odd for us to see this. Getting in and getting our tickets at Will Call was quick and easy. So, no issue there. The pre-show was OK. We sang "Pirate Christmas Songs", and watched a couple of performers. This included Salty, the oldest sea lion they have. The performers did a great job and Salty was, of course, adorable. We were then ushered in to the main show. We found our...bench (no actual seats) and quickly realized that they had us packed in like sardines. Place settings were on top of each other. We tried to move them to make room, but were told that the section was sold out. So, yes, you are on top of the stranger next to you. If you do not get a drink during the pre-show, you are out of luck for a very long time once in the main room. I don't drink alcohol, nor did I want to pay for a soda I was getting for free at dinner. Big mistake. I was completely parched and sat there for a very long time while our overworked pirate waiter ran around helping his 2 sections. So, it was not the waiter's fault that it took so long, but it would have been nice to know ahead of time. My boyfriend climbed out of the bench in order to find me some water. While doing so, he realized that the one pitcher at the end was the soup. It was a cream based soup just sitting there, getting cold. So, now, the food. The food just "ok". The soup had gotten cold. It was a creamy veggie soup, but really a cream soup with bits of "veggies" floating in it. A Red Lobster style cheesy biscuit came with it. It was warm, not dry, but a bit flavorless. The chicken I think was done, maybe. While it was juicy, it really lacked flavor. The BBQ pork was shameful for being in the south. I have gotten way better BBQ at home, in DC. BBQ sauce was desperately needed. The potato was just a half a small baked potato. Some salt on it, but nothing else. No butter anywhere to be found. The corn was, corn. Not much to mess up there. The dessert was a member's club kind of apple turnover. Not bad, but very massed produced. I couldn't finish it all and my stomach was upset after. The show started off promising. You immediately get that it is a take on A Christmas Carol. Yes, it was corny and cheesy and over-produced. But, it was entertaining. That is, until. . . EXTREMELY CREEPY BLACK LIT "TOYS" with soul-less eyes doing a dance. Thinks "Mr. Boogie" from Nightmare Before Christmas (though that would have been fun to see instead of what we got). Then here come Mary and Joseph on the donkey for the "live nativity" that, though is part of the Christmas season, really had no business in the story itself. It was just so bad all we could do was laugh. I laughed til I cried and almost wet myself. The rest of the show was overly produced song and dance, pirate battle, etc. The two younger sea lions "decided" they had had enough and went rouge and did not hit their marks. So, that was fun. Unless you are getting a HUGE discount, or for free, I'd say take a pass and go elsewhere.

If you are in Myrtle Beach for vacation, this is a must do! Highly recommend. First and foremost, arrive early for the pre-show which starts 30 minutes before the show starts. You will get to sing along with the cast, see a seal do some great tricks and just wind down before the show begins. Once the show starts, for every two rows there is one server assigned to take care of your meal, drinks and any other items you might need. We received phenomenal service! For a dine-in show, I was highly impressed. In addition, they did not lie when they say that they will serve you a half a chicken. Its real people! Moving away from the food, the show was amazing. From acrobats to lighting, performances, and animals used for the show, it was a great show.
