North Luzon Loop Road Trip Travel Guide 2023

It was a pouring morning of Christmas day, 25th of December, 2019 when the thought came to us. While everyone in the world was busy exchanging holiday greetings and gifts, a friend of mine who also travels a lot and I were thinking of going somewhere for a week or less during the holiday break.

My mom and I initially thought of going to Isabela province, my father’s hometown; and we thought of just taking my friend with us if he wanted to. He thought it was a good idea until we came up with a better one – a North Luzon loop road trip .

Once decided with the itinerary for the North Luzon loop, we packed our stuff good for a week, pulled out some containers, filled it in with some Noche Buena goods from our table and off we went on a spontaneous road trip and adventure to Northern Philippines.

The Northern Luzon

a bus in a country side with few people on top plad

The northern part of one of the Philippine archipelago’s biggest island is among the most favorite destinations of the road trippers in the country. You can actually travel from a province to another by land. The best thing about it is that you can also witness with your own senses how truly diverse the Philippine culture is not to mention how geographically blessed the whole island is.

green mountain ranges

Every region or province has something special and unique on the table – from their delicacies, to their costumes, language, traditions, points of interest and more. Albeit the advancement and progress in most parts of the country, some groups of indigenous people in the northern Luzon still practice their traditions religiously and protect it all cost. Meeting them is among the most fascinating things you can do in a trip to their region.

Language Spoken

The language or dialect spoken varies from province to province or region. Ilocano is spoken at large in North Luzon but you’ll also encounter people speaking in  Ybanag especially in the province of Isabela; and various tribal languages in the Cordilleras. Despite the variety of local languages spoken in the north, everyone could converse fluently in Tagalog and some even in English.

The North Luzon Loop

Three people, one car; drove through and stopped at seven provinces in North Luzon in almost six days. It was indeed an epic trip!

North Luzon map

We left Tagaytay City at 10:00 PM. Initially, we planned of going to Ilocos Norte then Ilocos Sur after Cagayan but since there was a typhoon a week ago, the roads connecting Cagayan and Ilocos collapsed making it impassable. We thought of a reroute instead and decided to visit Sagada.

Places to Visit in the North Luzon

We actually stopped or passed by six to seven provinces for this North Luzon loop road trip starting from Quirino, Isabela, Cagayan, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ilocos Sur then La Union. Below are the places we visited in each province:

First Stop: Quirino Province

A lady standing in the middle of flower garden in green rolling hills

At around 10:00 in the morning, We arrived at Cabarroguis, Quirino Province. First, we went to the library where the Quirino sign is at and took touristy shots (lol). Then, we had our early lunch and rested. After a nap, we hit the road again and visited  Landingan Viewpoint   before the sun set.   The drive to and from Nagtipunan is indeed a feast for the eyes. The endless rolling hills seemed dreamy during the golden hour. Dusk started to fall when we left Landingan Viewpoint.

Paskuhan sa Quirino

We went back to Quirino Capitol in the evening as there was an on-going event in there. Every year, during Christmas, each municipality of the province sets up an exhibit that tells its history and showcases their culture and tradition as part of their Paskuhan program. There are  also contests held each night and everyone is invited to watch and join.

A silhouette of a lady in front of a lit building

That’s when we learned that Quirino was previously a municipality of Nueva Vizcaya and the indigenous people, Igorots, predominantly resided in the area. Below are some photos of the exhibits during Paskuhan sa Quirino 2019.

road trip north of manila

After enjoying the night and the lights at the Capitol, we had dinner, called it a day and rested for another adventure the next day.

Second Stop: Isabela Province

a park with the words "Bonifacio Park" written across its arc

At around 4:30 AM, we left Quirino for Isabela Province. Our trip in Isabela is but a historical and religious one. We visited different churches and historical places in Ilagan, Tumauini and Cabagan. Of course, we didn’t miss the famous Pancit Cabagan!

an old church made of bricks with a cylindrical bell tower on the side

Since it was also the holiday season, a small local carnival and long bazaar were up near Cabagan Square Park. We visited it and enjoyed some street food.

A town sign with a lit carousel at the back

Third Stop: Cagayan

a wooden canoe floating in a river

We intially planned to visit the nearby islands and beaches in Cagayan but since a recent typhoon made the waves rough and kind of devastated and made some roads impassable, we decided to visit  Callao Cave  and Calvary Hills instead.

road trip north of manila

If we didn’t miss Isabela’s Pancit Cabagan, of course, we didn’t dare to miss Cagayan’s Pancit Batil Patong. After getting stuffed with some local stir-fried noodles, we headed to our next stop: Kalinga.

Fourth Stop: Kalinga

a lady standing at the edge with a view of mountain ranges in the booackground

We were all tired and weary from our day trip in Cagayan that driving straight to Sagada would be a little impossible that night. With that, we decided to stop at Kalinga and spend a night for a good slumber in there.

We checked in to a cheap AirBnB accommodation, at Ragsac Camping Grounds, since it is also along the road that we’d take going to Sagada. We didn’t expect much from it. What we didn’t know is that it offers far more than just a camping ground.

a lady seated at the edge looking at the mountain ranges in front of her

It is located near Chico River – a river that encompasses two region: The Cordilleras and Cagayan Valley. It is also a place where the sunrise is breath taking.   After admiring the glorious sunrise, we had brewed coffee and some pan de sal. Then, we packed up and headed to our next destination – Sagada.

Fifth Stop: Sagada, Mountain Province

The drive from Kalinga to Sagada is among my most favorite! If the drive in Quirino Province promised endless rolling hills, this one took our breaths away effortlessly with the countless waterfalls and steep verdant mountain ridges that kept us up and anticipating for more!

abandoned bus wiht graffitti in the middle of the woods

We started seeing tall pine trees on one side, and cliff with mountain ranges below on the other. My nose and ears felt cold with excitement as it is my first time to set foot in Sagada. When we got into the town proper, it is noticeable that a lot of tourists walk from a point to another and few vehicles can be seen on the road.

There’s so much to love about Sagada – the hospitality of the locals, their preservation of their tradition and culture, the weather, the food, the place itself and the stray dogs. the stray dogs were friendly and they seem healthy!

Things to remember when visiting Sagada

Take note that Sagada Tourism Office requires the visitors to hire a local tour guide shall they decide to visit the different tourist spots in it. However, there are points that the tourists can visit without a guide such as the Sagada Pottery, Sagada Weaving and St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church.

We paid an amount of Php 50.00 for the tourist registration fee then proceeded to Sagada Pottery. We watched how the pots and ceramics were done out of clay. They would also let the tourists experience it. Further, interested collectors can buy from  their small store where their finished products are also on display.

First day in Sagada

After Sagada Pottery, we visited Sagada Weaving House. However, it was a holiday and the weavers were on a break according to its owner. Instead, we checked on their products as they also have a souvenir shop.

a two-story house with blue roof and white windows

Since it was just in time for us to check in, we headed to the open field of St. Mary the Virgin complex and paid an amount of Php 50.00 as per instructed by the host of our AirBnB. We walked our way to Inandako’s BnB, settled then rested for a bit.

The Lemon Pie House was just a few meters away from where we were staying so we visited it and had our snack. Before we left, our host told us that it was the first day of the annual Bonfire Festival in Langtiw. Right after stuffing our selves with a slice of lemon pie, we took a multi-cab and went there.

If there’s one thing I’d dare not to miss in Sagada, it is seeing the  Hanging Coffins  with my own eyes and knowing more about it and their death and burial rituals. On our second day in Sagada, we decided to visit it in the morning.

Few steps from the jump off point to the Hanging Coffins is the St Mary the Virgin Anglican Church. We paid it a visit before finally leaving Sagada.

Drive Through: Cervantes, Ilocos Sur

a lady standing in the middle of a sharp curve in a highway

From Sagada, we drove southwest going to La Union passing by Benguet and Ilocos Sur. We stopped at Bessang Pass National Park as the view is truly enchanting. The low-lying clouds and the fog slowly enveloped the mountainside and the long and winding road. When the wind blows, the fog fades and reveal multi-tiered waterfalls at the mountain ranges across.

Sixth Stop: La Union

We were supposed to go surfing in La Union but due to the heavy traffic we were caught in at Bacnotan, we were not able to do it. Instead, we watched the sunset and had dinner by the beach in the province.

After dinner, we left San Juan and headed back home.

Tips and Things to Remember for the North Luzon Loop

1. As much as possible, get your tanks full especially before going to and leaving Kalinga and Sagada. There are only few gasoline stations along the way. If there’s any, it’s pretty expensive compared to that of other cities’. 2. Bring gallons of drinking water and snacks. 3. Check the weather before and from time to time during the road trip. Check if the roads that you are to take are passable. 4. Always be aware of the people’s culture of the place you are going to visit. 5. Bring enough cash for this North Luzon loop road trip. Not all cities that you’ll pass by accept credit cards. There are limited banks and ATM’s as well  in some cities. 6. Save a very good music playlist. This will make you up and pumped all throughout the trip. 7. Bring and always get your power banks fully charged. 8. Mobile data is necessary but take note that some parts you’ll drive through have sporadic to no mobile reception of network signal especially from Kalinga to Sagada and Sagada to La Union via Cervantes, Ilocos Sur and Benguet.

North Luzon Loop as an Overview

This North Luzon Loop Road Trip is but an overview of how amazing north Luzon is. After this, I highly suggest or rather encourage you to go back to these provinces and stay for two to three days for you to be able to fully understand and appreciate what each of it has to offer.

Hi, We are thinking of doing a similar roadtrip in November. We are starting and ending the loop in Manilla, so we are looking to rent a car for a week on a quite small budget. Do you have any recommendation for finding a car on a small budget ?

Mahirap hirap eh, lalo na in between town centers. So, advisable talaga to download offline maps is ever 🙂 Globe ako no’n pretty decent naman pero ayun, mas madalas walang signal talaga on the road.

  • Antipolo Cathedral : This is one of the major pilgrimage churches in the Philippines. It is also known as the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, making it a favorite amongst Filipinos when they want their newly-bought cars to be blessed. Pay a visit and grab some suman and kasoy (Antipolo’s local delicacies) outside the church for your snacks and as pasalubong , too.

Corregidor Island Memorial

Photo from Shutterstock Corregidor is an island situated west of Manila near Manila Bay, and it is part of the municipality of Cavite . It is best known for its huge role back during WWII because given its rocky landscape (earning it the name “The Rock”) and strategic location, it helped form a line of defense against enemy forces to the country.

As such, a lot of visitors who are interested in history (which is akin to a trip to, let’s say, Normandy) would often make this one of their b est weekend getaways from Manila. After all, there are several ruins and memorials set up all over the island in order to brush up your knowledge of World War II — the Malinta Tunnel ‘s 1000-bed hospital area, Japanese Garden of Peace , Mile-Long Barracks , Pacific War Memorial Museum , Filipino Heroes Memorial , and more.

Beyond this, however, you can also enjoy the natural beauty of Corregidor by partaking in a biking trail that will lead you to scenic spots and then end your day afterward with a sunset experience at Battery Grubbs which is one of the 23 batteries on the island that has ‘disappearing’ guns perched on a hill (another option is at the Corregidor Island Lighthouse ). If you rather want to go on foot, you can trek through the Cadena de Amor; it will lead you to the tail of the island that grants you sweeping views of Manila Bay. .

VISITING THE NORTH OF THE PHILIPPINES

Philippines Visa Guide - Complete Visa Guide

The northern area of the  Philippines  stays under most tourists’ radar, as they all rush to visit the more popular islands to the south. It’s really a shame that out of so many beautiful locations, only the rice terraces of Banaue are somewhat known. In this post, I’ll explain what’s so special about a vacation in the north, and how you can make the most of such a trip.

Find reviews and Book your room or bed in the Philippines through

BOOKING.COM

While most tourists can only spare a few days on their vacation, there’s so much to do up north that you can easily spend 2 whole weeks there. Even if you only have a short time in The Philippines, combining one of these destinations with a trip to  Boracay  and Palawan is well worth it.

Doing so will allow you to get a different taste of the country, and visit a beautiful area most tourists sadly ignore. One easy way to do so is by  booking a vacation package through an online agency .  They will help you plan everything and find the best deals, so you have enough time to make the most out of a short visit to the north.

Even if we disregard how beautiful these places are, there are a few distinct advantages to travelling up north of the Philippines. Firstly, it’s usually much cheaper. Living costs, accommodation and travelling expenses are all lower than what it will cost you to visit the more popular islands down south, or even other spots near Manila such as Batangas, Tagaytay or Puerto Galera for example.

Secondly, it’s much easier to get there, with most destinations reachable by bus from Manila. Lastly, both the atmosphere and the landscape are unique and are unlike anything you will see anywhere else in the Philippines.

Don’t get me wrong, a white-sand island with crystal clear waters isn’t bad, and for that purpose visiting the Southern parts of the country is perfect. Mixing things up a bit, however, will allow you to get a better taste of everything the Philippines has to offer.

So, here are the best places to visit in the North of the Philippines, along with my reasoning for choosing each, listed in no particular order:

Visiting the North of the Philippines

Mt. pinatubo.

Visiting the North of the Philippines

Starting off with this beautiful location, only a 2.5-3 hours bus drive from Manila. All buses heading out to Baguio , Sagada or Ilocos stop at Tarlac – which is where the trek to the mountain begins. This stunning  volcano last erupted in 199 1, the 2nd strongest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century, which changed the surrounding landscape considerably. These changes can be seen to this very day, creating one of the most picturesque and unique places in the Philippines.

The climb to the crater involves an hour-long 4×4 drive, then another 40 minutes or so of climbing by foot. It’s one of the most rewarding hikes in the country, especially considering how easy and quick it is. If you have the time, consider camping at the summit because the sunrise is absolutely spectacular. In any case, visiting Pinatubo can easily be accomplished as a day trip out of Manila, or as a 1 day stop on your way up north. You may  check this cool tour  for this destination.

Sagada and the Rice Terraces

When planning a trip to the Rice Terraces, most people head straight to Banaue and skip Sagada altogether. Personally, I think that’s a shame since Sagada offers a better taste of what the mountain province is really like. Also, hotels over there are usually better and cheaper. For that reason, my suggestion would set your base at Sagada and spend a few days exploring the whole area.

This place is perfect for nature lovers – with a huge concentration of stunning waterfalls, mountains and caves that are all great for hiking day tours. The province is also one of the best places to witness some of the Philippines oldest traditions, such as the harvest festival, as well as try out some great traditional food.

Banaue and Batad are merely an hour and a half away, and you wouldn’t want to miss those of course. The rice terraces are a UNESCO world heritage site and a true testimony to the creativity and ingenuity of ancient man. It’s a perfect place for hiking and camping, where you can marvel at the stunning view and soak in the rich culture and heritage.

Visiting the North of the Philippines

If there’s one thing the North of the Philippines lacks, it’s good beaches to visit. Sure, there is Laiya beach in Batangas or the beautiful beaches of Zambales, but none of those can really compete with the famous beaches elsewhere in the country. Luckily, there is Pagudpud which has been nicknamed as “Boracay of the north” for a reason – its stunning beaches and overall fantastic beach atmosphere which is perfect for relaxation.

Pagudpud is located at the northernmost tip of Luzon island, so getting there can be quite difficult. It’s not the best choice if you are looking for a single-destination holiday, and is best combined with other Ilocos attractions such as Vigan city for example. If you do want to visit this place by itself, consider flying to Laoag and taking a van from there, since a direct bus from Manila would take you no less than 12 hours.

The most famous beaches over there are Saud and Blue Lagoon, with the former being considered one of the most beautiful in the whole country. There are also dozens of smaller beaches you can explore, which are perfect if you are looking for a more private experience. Main attractions include surfing, diving and island hopping. The best thing about Pagudpud is the high level of resorts – you can easily find a great all-inclusive resort for only a small fraction of what you would pay anywhere else.

Find reviews and Book your room or bed in the Pagudpud through Booking.com  |  Agoda

Visiting the North of the Philippines

Vigan City is the real gem of the north of the Philippines, and if you’ll ask me to pick one destination to go to this would be it. It really amazes me this wonderful place doesn’t get more recognition from international tourists and mostly attracts only local visitors. The old city (Calle crisp logo area) has been named a UNESCO world heritage site, as well as one of the new 7 wonders cities of the world.

Vigan is truly one of the best places to explore Filipino unique history and culture. There are not many other places where the Asian-Hispanic mix is so evident. On top of that, the city offers a vibrant nightlife and high-level accommodation. There are also quite a few interesting museums to visit, showcasing Ilocano artefacts, traditions and history.

Since Vigan is quite close to Laoag and Pagudpud, it’s easy to include in any vacation in Ilocos. Combining these with a stop at Sagada would require around of week, but I would say that is probably the perfect Northern Luzon adventure . This type of vacation provides a perfect mix of history, culture and stunning nature.

I know this is just a shortlist and sadly I had to leave out a ton of amazing locations but if you are visiting other parts of the country, don’t miss these  highlights of the Philippines . It was only meant to give you a taste of what the North of the Philipines has to offer. Hopefully, it will make you consider taking your next vacation there! If you have any questions or want to discuss another place I left out of this list, just leave a comment below.

10 PHILIPPINE ROAD TRIP DESTINATIONS: From Manila, Cebu, and More!

10 PHILIPPINE ROAD TRIP DESTINATIONS: From Manila, Cebu, and More!

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Rainy days are here again!

You know what that means: the weather is more unpredictable. But you should never let less sunshiny skies rain on your parade. The rainy season is when Vins and I love going on road trips with our friends!

road trip north of manila

This post is brought to you by Pepsi.[/caption] For budget travelers like us, the rainy season is a great time to explore. Some destinations are much better during this time: waterfalls are grander, beaches are less crowded, and wildlife is more alive! The best part: It’s off season! Hotel and resort stays are much cheaper!

Don’t let the season stop you from exploring! We’ve asked some of our travel blogger friends for some of their road trip route recommendations and we’ll be sharing that in this post.

But before that, some important tips to turn your road trip into an awesome journey by making sure you get your money’s worth.

  • The more, the merrier, the cheaper . You get the full experience when the barkada is complete! It’s also a lot cheaper because you get to split the costs of everything. In general, the cost of family rooms and dorm rooms divided among the group is lower than a double room. At restaurants, “for sharing” meals split among the group costs much less than individual orders.

road trip north of manila

  • Ask for the hotel’s policy on extra beds . Most hotels allow extra beds for a minimum fee! You can take advantage of this to save on hotel expenses.
  • Buy food, drinks, and toiletries before leaving . They are generally more expensive if you buy at the resort or hotel. You’ll save a great deal if you bring your own provision.

road trip north of manila

  • Watch out for potential savings! Even small discounts matter. They add up over time. Hotel-booking sites often offer deals like free breakfast during off-season. Take it! When it comes to drinks, a road trip won’t be the same without Pepsi. Choose a 1.5L bottle of Pepsi, which costs only P38! That’s a P10 drop from its usual price and much lower than other brands. Every peso your barkada saves collectively can be used to fund other activities along the way!

road trip north of manila

  • Buy in bulk! It will help bring down cost. Instead of buying individual sunscreens, just buy a big one and share. Grab 1.5L bottles of Pepsi and just pour into your own reusable cups! It’s more sulit that way.

Without further ado, here are some recommended road trip itineraries, as picked by travel bloggers! The first seven can be done from Manila.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

MANILA-SORSOGON ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for residents of: Manila, Southern Luzon

A post shared by Kara Santos | TRAVEL UP (@karasantos) on Dec 21, 2015 at 8:36pm PST

When it comes to road trips, no one is more credible in the Philippine blogosphere than Kara Santos of Travel-up . Her pick: Manila to Sorsogon. It’s one of the more popular road trip routes in the country. You can adjust your itinerary depending on the number of stops and how much time you want to spend in each place. The suggestion below is a very relaxed itinerary, where you can still spend some quality time in the major stops (Quezon, Naga City & Sorsogon).

Day 1: Manila to Quezon (passing the Laguna backroads) Scenic drive through Laguna backroads, stopover at Pililla Windmills Lunch in the Pagsanjan area; drive to Lucban Check into Batis Aramin Resort in Lucban, Quezon Kamay ni Hesus (optional)

Day 2: Quezon to Naga City Drive from Lucban, Quezon to Naga City, Camarines Sur Pass the Old Zigzag Road Stopover photo ops at Gumaca Arrive in Naga City Check in to chosen hotel Food Trip / Dinner at Bob Marlin’s/ Coffee at Travel Cafe Camsur WaterPark (optional)

Day 3: Naga to Sorsogon Drive from Naga City to Sorsogon For a more scenic route, pass the Tiwi-Sangay Road instead of the highway Stop for DJC Halo-Halo Lunch somewhere in Legazpi City Continue Driving to Sorsogon City Check into chosen hotel in Sorsogon

TIP: You can cut this road trip to two (or even one day) if you leave really early on the first day and make minimal stops, but this can be very tiring.

BATANGAS BEACHES ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for residents of: Manila, Batangas, Southern Luzon

road trip north of manila

My personal pick is Batangas. I’m biased, of course, because I was born and raised here. It is a blessed land. It cradles a wide array of diverse landscapes — a scenic lake, spectacular diving sites, breathtaking rivers, fertile farm lands, enchanting mountains, and a volcano.

But what most people love about Batangas is its beaches! This route will take you to some of the province’s most stunning ivory coasts!

Suggested Route:

Day 1: Lipa City to Laiya Drive to Lipa City for a quick lunch Head to your resort in Laiya in San Juan, where you will spend the night Hit the beach

Day 2: Laiya to Malabrigo to Anilao Visit Malabrigo Beach Climb to Malabrigo Lighthouse Lunch in Batangas City Drive to Anilao and check-in Hit the pool

Day 3: Tingloy Island-Hopping From Anilao, go island-hopping (Sombrero Island, Oscar Beach, Masasa Beach) Check out

PANGASINAN-LA UNION ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for residents of: Baguio, Manila, Northern Luzon, Central Luzon

For Senyorita Micaela Rodriguez, the answer is definitely Pangasinan and La Union. Her beloved hometown has a lot to offer to tired and weary city souls.  This trip takes you from Bolinao in Pangasinan to the trendy Urbiztondo Beach in La Union, making a stop at the Hundred Islands along the way.

road trip north of manila

It’s a great long weekend itinerary not just for Manila-residents but even more for those in Northern and Central Luzon!

Mica’s suggested long weekend itinerary is as follows:

Day 1: Bolinao Arrival in Pangasinan Visit Cape Bolinao Lighthouse Visit St. James Church Visit Patar Beach and watch sunset

Day 2: Bolinao to Alaminos Check out Drive to Alaminos and check in Visit Hundred Islands Park

Day 3: Alaminos to Urbiztondo Check out and drive to San Juan, La Union Check in at hotel/resort Laze/surf at Urbiztondo Beach

Day 4 – Tangadan Falls Visit Tangadan Falls Check out

ZAMBALES BEACHES ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for residents of: Manila, Central Luzon

road trip north of manila

Ada Wilkinson of Travel in Boots recommends Zambales especially to students. “It should be on top of their list,” she writes.

Zambales has a lot to offer. Subic remains a good choice. Potipot has always been an open secret. Lately, San Narciso and Liwliwa in San Felipe are also starting to get noticed! And although San Antonio’s ashen coves like Anawangin and Nagsasa are inaccessible for land vehicles, visitors can easily park their cars in Pundaquit and return after a day trip.

Day 1: San Antonio Coves Drive to Pundaquit. Park your car and hop onto a boat to the coves. Visit Anawangin Cove, Nagsasa Cove and stay overnight

Day 2: San Felipe or San Narciso Go back to Pundaquit Drive to Liwliwa or Crystal Beach Stay overnight

Day 3: Subic Shopping Check out! Drive to Subic Shopping!

LAGUNA ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

road trip north of manila

Asta Alvarez of WanderGeneration.com champions Laguna in this list! Laguna is one of the provinces we often overlook partly because its edges aren’t laced with pearly beaches. Joke’s on us because paradise isn’t always made of sand and saltwater. Much of Laguna is almost untouched, still covered with dense rainforests concealing several magnificent waterfalls. Many of its historic towns retain many pieces of its glorious past. And its cuisine showcases some of the best of the Southern Tagalog region.

Here’s a sample road trip route:

DAY 1 – CALAMBA & SAN PABLO Drive to Rizal Shrine, Calamba Proceed to Pandin Lake and have lunch on bamboo raft Check-in at Sulyap Bed and Breakfast Sulyap Swimming Pool & Jacuzzi

DAY 2 – LUISIANA & CAVINTI Check out and leave for Nagcarlan Stop at Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery Visit Liliw town (or if you skipped breakfast at Sulyap, have it at Chef Mau’s in Liliw) Trek to Hulugan Falls in Luisiana Trek to Cavinti Falls (Pueblo El Salvador) Leave for Caliraya Lake Check in at Caliraya Springs Mountain Lake Resort

DAY 3 – CALIRAYA LAKE & PAETE Caliraya Lake swimming, biking Check out, leave for Paete Paete Tour, shopping, lunch Leave for Pililla, Rizal BONUS! Pililla Windmills Stopover

ILOCOS ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for residents of: Manila, Baguio, Northern Luzon, Central Luzon

road trip north of manila

For Gael Hilotin of The Pinay Solo Backpacker , Ilocos is an old favorite. It has everything one can ever ask for in a destination. Rich heritage, check. Irresistible cuisine, check. Beaches, check. In her suggested itinerary, your journey begins in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur, and work your way up to the stunning municipality of Pagudpud, making stops at some of the region’s most iconic landmarks and most popular attractions!

Day 1: Ilocos Sur Visit Sta. Maria Church (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Spanish-era cemetery Drive to Vigan and explore Calle Crisologo and see Vigan Cathedral Check-in at hotel Visit Bantay Church and Bell Tower

Day 2: Laoag, Batac, and Paoay Drive to Batac and tour Proceed to Paoay and see Paoay Church Lunch at Herencia Cafe Experience Paoay Sand Dunes Check in at Hotel

Day 3: Pagudpud Check-in at Hotel Visit Saud Beach, Kabigan Falls, Patapat Viaduct, Timmangtang Rock Formation, Blue Lagoon, etc.

RIZAL DAY TOUR ITINERARY

Perfect for residents of: Manila, Rizal, Laguna

road trip north of manila

If you’re based in Manila or nearby provinces and you only have a day to spare, Rizal offers a quick and easy trail! For mountaineers, a trek up Mt. Daraitan awaits. Mountain resorts also provide peaceful retreat venues.

But for travel blogger Celine Reyes of Celineism , who is a Rizal local, this this one-day road trip itinerary is most suitable for those who crave a quick relaxing getaway:

Suggested Route

Angono Petroglyphs Lunch at Balaw-balaw Regina Rica in Tanay Pililla Windmills Antipolo Cloud 9 Overlooking Restaurant

SOUTHERN CEBU ADVENTURE ITINERARY

Perfect for tourists in and residents of Cebu

A post shared by Lakwatsero (@thelakwatsero) on Jun 2, 2017 at 4:32pm PDT

Angel Juarez of Lakwatsero.com has visited Cebu countless times over the past few years, it seems like there’s no stopping him anytime soon. For nature and adventure lovers, South Cebu opens endless opportunities to be blown away. Here’s his suggested route:

Day 1: Cebu City – Badian – Moalboal Drive towards Badian in the morning Go canyoneering in Matutinao Have a waterfalls massage in Kawasan Falls Proceed to Moalboal and find a place along Panagsama Beach. Swim with the Sardine Run in the in the afternoon Laze in the White Beach for sunset.

Day 2: Moalboal – Samboan – Oslob Go waterfall hopping! See Alegria’s Cambais Falls and Samboan’s Dao Falls, Binalayan Falls and Aguinid Falls. Drive towards Oslob in the afternoon Get a room at Cancua-ay Beach. Spend the rest of the afternoon and the sunset in Sumilon Island.

Day 3: Oslob – Boljoon – Dalaguete – Cebu City Get up early for the sunrise Drive to the heritage town of Boljoon after breakfast. Proceed towards Barangay Mantalongon of Dalaguete See the ragged roof of Cebu at Osmeña Peak. Don’t forget to take home a pack of Carcar’s famous chicharon on your way back to Cebu City.

ALLAH VALLEY ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for tourists and residents in General Santos City, Sarangani, South Cotabato

road trip north of manila

“There is this vast patch of land in Mindanao that can be every traveler’s haven for adventure and cultural experience,” Louie Pacardo of A Nomad’s Perspective shares. “The place is called the Allah Valley, a vast landscape covering portions of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat in South Central Mindanao region. Here, the picturesque upland town of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato is the crowning destination and the rest of the eco-cultural tourism spots are equally amazing.”

In this route that Louie suggests, you’ll get to see not just Lake Sebu but also Lake Holon, hailed the cleanest inland body of water in the Philippines for many years. And you can also make a few adjustments if you want to continue your journey to Sultan Kudarat.

Day 1: GenSan to Lake Holon Travel to Tboli (3 hrs to barangay Salacafe + 30min habal-habal to Sitio Kule, take-off point) for Lake Holon trek via the scenic Kule trail Overnight camping at Lake Holon

Day 2: Lake Holon to Lake Sebu From Lake Holon proceed to Lake Sebu (1 hr): Visit Seven Falls Ride dual zip line Take the cruise around the lake.

Day 3: Lake Sebu to Alamada Early morning travel to Alamada (3.5 hrs) for Asik-asik Falls Travel back to Gensan

Day 4: Back to GenSan Travel to Glan, Sarangani (1 hr) for the white beaches. Drive back to gensan Option 2: Travel to Maasim for the paragliding adventure

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL ROAD TRIP ITINERARY

Perfect for: Visitors and residents of Negros Island

road trip north of manila

Bacolod City is most well-known for three things — sweets, chicken inasal, and Masskara Festival. But there’s more to the city and the rest of the Negros Occidental province than its food and festivities. Negros Occidental is laced with shores strewn with white sand, its streets flanked with historic buildings, and its islands blessed with rich natural resources. Not to mention that its people are some of the friendliest I have had the honor to meet, making a trip to this jewel of the Visayas an unforgettable experience each time.

For Vins of PhilippineBeaches.org , Negros Occidental is a fantastic road trip destination! Here’s a sample route:

Day 1: TALISAY, SILAY, BACOLOD Heritage Tour in Talisay and Silay OR Mambukal Mountain Resort Food Trip in Bacolod

Day 2: DANJUGAN ISLAND Drive to Punta Bulata, check in Danjugan Island Day Trip Overnight in Punta Bulata

Road trip itinerary: sailing to the north for the weekend.

Sometime in April, my friends and I had the fortune to meet a backpacker, Kat, during our trip to the sleepy town of Pai in northern Thailand. Little did we know that in a month, our paths would cross again as Kat found herself on Philippine shores.

North road trip 8 travelling friends

We promised to show her the beauty of the Philippines from a local’s eyes, away from the glitzy dressings of travel guides and luxury magazines.

This meant exploring the road less taken: the road to the North.

North road trip 10

The Cordilleras and its surrounding areas may be more familiar to us local folk, but it’s a region often ignored by international travel magazines, who choose to paint the country as a jumble of pristine beaches and urban chaos.

North road trip 1

Although not necessarily untrue, the Philippines’ 7,107 islands have their own stories to tell, the Cordilleras included. Teeming with a rich culture unmarred by colonial influences, and lush green scenery, the North is definitely a destination worthy of any traveler’s bucket list.

North road trip driving motorist

Armed with a plan but with little time, our goal was to hit as many places as possible over a weekend. So we hopped into a sedan and rode off into the sunset.

Pinto Museum

To kick off our road trip, we headed northeast of Manila and visited the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo, a beautiful estate that showcases the best of contemporary Philippine art and serene views. Look through the museum’s stunning six galleries, each enclosed in grand wooden doors. Watch the sun set through Manila’s skyline from their viewing deck.

Right after the quick trip to Antipolo, we went home, packed our bags and headed straight to Baguio. We recommend leaving for Baguio at dawn — after leaving at 1AM, we arrived in the City of Pines at 5 in the morning, after coasting through the expressways of NLex, SCTex, and TPLex.

North road trip 12 hill station

Breakfast at Hill Station is the best way to start, with classic Filipino breakfast against rustic colonial interiors.

The Manor Camp John Hay Baguio City Day 3 When in Manila Mae Ilagan Frank Ruaya-2

After that we went sightseeing at Camp John Hay , marveling at its manicured gardens and arrays of pine trees.

North road trip 14 baguio dairy farm

Wanting to dive a little further into the local produce, we also drove to the Baguio Dairy Farm , a must-visit if you want to try local dairy, like yogurt and fresh cow’s milk.

North road trip 16 driving chevy

We also headed to Baguio Korean Palace on South Drive, undoubtedly the best samgyeopsal experience you can get in the City of Pines, giving Korean buffets in Manila a run for their money.

North road trip 13 travel backpacking

To end the day, we drove to Arca’s Yard, perched on the outskirts of Baguio City by the Ambuklao Road. It’s a perfect place to have coffee in solace, away from the lights of Baguio.

North road trip 3

Roadside stalls selling local passionfruit

North road trip sagada backpacker

After Baguio City, we took a side trip to the nearby town of Atok, Benguet , and ended up discovering breathtaking mountainous landscapes.

North road trip 2 chicken rice veggies

We had lunch at a roadside restaurant, serving a fried chicken rice meal, an eponymous dish in Baguio and Benguet.

single-and-unattached-la-union-11

The culture in La Union is impressive. With a tight-knit community, homegrown businesses have been booming left and right, and the province has since become a haven for surfers and urban jungle retirees in recent years.

North road trip el union dirty horchata

One of our absolute favorite spots to hang out in the affectionately called LU is El Union , a homegrown coffee shop that has since moved to a bigger location.

We recommend staying at the hip hostel Flotsam and Jetsam , but even if you’re just passing through, go for their craft cocktails and awesome ambiance.

One of the newest spots at La Union is the burger joint called Mad Monkeys , now occupying El Union’s former spot across Sebay. If home-cooked Filipino food is more your calling, have dinner at Tagpuan .

North road trip 9 friends

All in all, we clocked in about 1000 kilometers — and that’s all with a sedan. It’s absolutely possible to go on a road trip and explore the north even without an SUV. In fact, we drove with the Chevrolet Sail , and it’s everything you’d want in a city car that can do more.

North road trip 7 chevrolet sail

Decked with a stylish 9-inch Android head unit, navigating with Waze was a breeze, and we were even able to watch movies on the screen. You also get lots of space in this car — our friend, who stands at 5 feet 11 inches, was able to drive comfortably without sacrificing leg room for our group of five.

North road trip 6

The wide compartment allowed enough room for each of our heavy backpacks, as well as a guitar. The sun roof was also a great finishing touch especially for this nature-filled road trip, whether it was a panoramic view of the lush greenery, or driving underneath the stars.
