Bike Test: Trek Fuel EX 9

pinkbike 2006 trek

When Trek set out to design the new Fuel EX, they up when the wheel moves deep into its travel. We’ve had wanted to set the bar for mountain bike versatility. The bike they came up with pulls from their extensive ride time and research with some of the best riders on the planet. The aluminum-framed version is not their top of the line (the carbon frame gets that title), but the EX9 sports all the high-end technologies.

WHO IS IT MADE FOR? This bike can work for a huge range of riders, and that’s what being a true trailbike is all about. The Fuel EX9 sports just enough travel to feel aggressive, but not so much that it will hold you back on a long ride or a climb. This bike is all about versatility.

pinkbike 2006 trek

WHAT IS IT MADE FROM? The Alpha Platinum aluminum frame features just over 5.1 inches of rock-gobbling suspension that uses Trek’s proprietary ABP (Active Braking Pivot) design. This design uses a pivot at the dropout inline with the rear axle and a “floating” shock that attaches to the swingarm to keep the suspension active and neutral during braking and pedaling efforts. The frame also sports a tapered head tube, one-piece magnesium rocker, and integrated chainstay and downtube protection.

pinkbike 2006 trek

WHICH COMPONENTS STAND OUT? The shock’s DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve) technology works by using an additional air chamber that’s only opened  up when the wheel moves deep into its travel. We’ve had great luck with this shock technology, but always said we’d like to see it in the fork to offer a more balanced feel. This is the first year Trek has done that. That little bit of extra air keeps the suspension from feeling like you’re getting cheated out of the last 20 percent of your travel from the air pressure “ramping up.” Bravo, Trek.

The Bontrager XR3 Team tires are a perfect fit for the EX. They roll fast and hook up very well in a wide variety of conditions. There was a day when Trek bikes were held back by mediocre, house-brand tire choices, but those days are gone.

HOW DOES IT PERFORM? Setup: Setting up the DRCV should be a hassle, but it’s not. The fork and shock have only one air chamber each to set, and Trek simplifies the process by including clip-on sag meters on both. We set both the fork and shock to 30-percent sag and hit the trails. The beauty of this system is that it can feel both efficient and bottomless with a single setup. The DRCV allows the suspension to move deep into its travel while still delivering a firm pedaling platform. With the Fuel EX, let the fork and shock work their magic.

The rebound damping circuit on the Fuel’s shock is very strong, and we found ourselves running the adjustment near full open. Smaller riders who need lower pressures may have difficulty finding a setting that doesn’t “pack up” on successive hits.

Pedaling: Trek’s DRCV shock and fork (made by Fox) also have Fox’s rider-selected CTD system (Climb, Trail, Descend modes). While the suspension action responds well to all three settings, we found ourselves leaving the suspension in the trail mode most of the time. This bike can do it all when the shock is set right in the middle.

pinkbike 2006 trek

Climbing: The aggressively steep seat tube angle puts the rider right over the pedals, which feels very efficient on long climbs. The plush suspension assists on rough, technical climbs (don’t use the too-firm climb mode in this situation) by allowing the rear wheel to follow the terrain and maintain traction. The 26-inch wheels allow for quick acceleration over obstacles in the climb, and changing lines is almost a subconscious effort.

Cornering: Rumors of the 26-inch-wheeled trailbike being killed off by the 29er and 27-incher are greatly exaggerated. The Fuel EX has something that the big-wheeled bikes can’t exactly match, and that’s maneuverability. The Fuel EX has a snappy and responsive feel in the corners, and the bike loves to be manhandled through switchbacks.

Descending: At the end of a descent, we like to see that we’ve used all the available travel. The DRCV delivers in spades. The front and rear suspension feel exceptionally balanced, allowing you to work the stroke of the shock and fork much more effectively. While the first half of the travel is designed to be efficient, the second half is designed to feel bottomless, and it just plain works. The 5 inches of travel are used so effectively; it feels like the Fuel has even more.

TRICKS, UPGRADES OR TIPS? The Fuel EX has routing for a RockShox Reverb Stealth seatpost with a remote actuation hose that routes through the frame and connects at the bottom of the seatpost rather than at the head. The EX9 doesn’t use that routing and instead comes with the standard Reverb seatpost (with its hose that connects to the seatpost head and routs externally). This spec doesn’t make sense to us. Instead, Trek should spec a less-expensive aluminum post, lower the bike price and let the rider upgrade to the Stealth seatpost if he desires. Using the standard Reverb feels like a compromise where nobody wins.

The rear brake hose clipped our heels when we were pedaling. To remedy this, we rerouted the hose on the inside of the seat stay, but this caused an unsightly rub mark in the paint. With a simple stick-on protector, both problems would have been solved. Add one before your first ride.

BUYING ADVICE The versatility of the Fuel EX9 can’t be understated. It’s not a cross-country racer, and it’s not a descending specialist; instead, it’s designed to ride everything well. The geometry feels like it has E.S.P. and knows your next move before you make it. The maneuverability and flickability built in mean you can make the move happen too.

The DRCV suspension is much more than just marketing jargon. This technology really works and makes the 5 inches of travel feel like more. Bikes like the Fuel EX9 are the reason that 26-inch wheels aren’t dead. They’re just plain fun to ride. If you’re looking for a lively partner that can do everything short of a downhill race, this bike is worth a look.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Buying used on pink bike advice

  • Add to quote

Hi, I'm attempting to upgrade into a full suspension but have come to the realization that options at my price point ($2000-2500) are extremely limited and that I may be better off staying on a HT. But I'm not ready to give up yet as the limiting factor on my rides has been lower back tightness (after around 8-10 mi). I just turned 40 so it's possible that its just the effects of getting older, but I've also been riding an upgraded entry level HT that I've had for close to 7 yrs. It's a Giant Talon 7 ( can't remember the exact year either 16 or 17 I think). Anyway, in my efforts to try and find a FS bike I've started combing through some of the posting on PB and have found some good stuff. I'm just a bit worried about scammers and or fake postings. Have any of you boughten any bikes from PB? I want to do my due diligence, how do you know if what your looking at is the real deal? I found a post that seems too good to be true. A 2020 Trek Fuel EX for $950, that just seems way too good to be true right? How can I find out if this is an authentic post. I've reached out to the seller with a few questions and will gauge their response. Do you guys have any other advise on how to authenticate a posting? I've viewed his seller history and he has some other bikes on there but none are MTBs. he has a XC bike and some brakes for sale, but I'm unsure of how to gauge this and would be grateful for any other tips. Also, I'm not very familiar with frame sizing. The listing states it a 17.5 M frame, when I go on Trek's website and view the sizing chart for the current gen Fuel EX there are no measurements with the sizes just M or M/L along with rider height and inseam measurements that are recommended for the corresponding frame size. I'm at 5'9 so based on that chart for this gen Fuel Ex Id probably go with the M/L. If this listing is legit do you think that frame would work for me at 5'9 and 195#? Lastly, is there any payment service that holds the funds until I can verify that I got what I thought I paid for? If not, how have you approached getting payment over to the seller without being completely exposed? Here's the post in question: https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3661841/ Thanks in advance for your recs! Cheers, Abe

It's getting weird out there. Start with a phone number in my opinion and if they refuse to speak on the phone, there is an issue. Ask where they are at, make up a trail name from the area and ask them if they ride it, and if they say yes to the made up trail name, report them. Just use lots of common sense. Ask for photos from angles that they can not get unless the bike is actually in their possession. Then use PP (not as a gift). When you send the money spell out exactly what you are buying (size, model, year, color, spec, etc.) because if you can not prove what you expected to get, you have no claim. Also if it's too good to be true, it is. No one on PB accidentally sells way below value. If you want a sure thing buy local, or from Pro's Closet. GL.

thanks, I'm leaning towards this being to good to be true, but the seller indicated that he'd have it boxed and shipped from the trek store. what's Pro's closet? Unfortunately I haven't found anything to promising locally yet..

The guy has only been a member for 5 days (since June 20, 2023). Both bikes he’s selling are WAY too cheap for what they are. It’s a scam. I find that if you start to ask more complex questions or for proof (I.e. damage on chainstay or for more detailed pictures of “x”, they usually can’t give you them or they try to reason why they can’t. Also if the deal is actually legit, all the power too him. However I always think that they’ll be another so if I miss that deal, it’s okay.

A HT that fits you won't seize your back. Getting a FS in the wrong size might continue to seize your back. i suggest your rent a few bikes in your local area is different sizes / geometries and figure out what reach and stack you should be on, what chainstay length you like, and what Head Angle scratches your itch. Then engage in the high stakes game of distance buying with at least the prospect of getting a fitting bike you'll enjoy riding at the end. I've had real good luck with components on pinkbike, particularly forks, but some other stuff too. Any bike ads I responded to that were TGTBT were indeed just that. Folks who are above price or on par with market have been real, but I didn't end up closing any deals. It is hard to judge a bike from photos. Shop inspection mentioned above sounds like good advice!

I've bought a few bikes off of pb. Exchanged phone calls, had additional pics sent, also had the bike inspected and boxed by a shop of my choice in their area before money was sent. Then paid the shop fees for boxing, inspection and shipping to my lbs. Sent from my moto g(7) supra using Tapatalk

Ya, ask if you can come by and see it in person...even if you can't. I did that recently on a SC Chameleon and the guy gave me every excuse why he couldn't show it in person. That's a no-go.

good stuff, thanks man!

Well you guys it did turn out to be too good to be true. Initially his post stated that he would have the bike professionally packed and shipped via his lbs. When I asked about this he told me he would cover shipping and just charge me an extra $100 because he had some coupons (what a nice guy right?). When I aske about the the lbs and the bike being professionally packed and shipped he told me that he would take care of it. This lead me to initially think that maybe he worked at a lbs and got a good deal on it (wishful thinking I know). I then asked him some probing question about riding, how he liked the bike, how much he had ridden it ( since the pics look like its barely been ridden and it a 3 yr old bike). He told me it had minimal use without specifying anything and this really had my spidey senses tingling (what kind of mountain biker speaks this way!). Then I asked for the name and location of the bike shop at which point he blocked me. I am going to share all this with the folks at PB, but if you guys could plz help me get this out to people to warn them of this asshole. I'm sure that the name on his profile isn't real, hopefully they can block him. I hate to think of how many poor and unsuspecting ppl this jerk has taken advantage of. These message boards and forums are great for learning about so much, but I hate how ppl can manipulate them to take advantage of others. Anyway, rant over. Thank you all for you advice I'm so glad I listened to my gut on this, would've sucked to get bamboozeled for a grand.

Not to derail the conversation, but if your lower back is giving you problems, working on core strength pays huge dividends for your biking enjoyment.

I really agree with @dompedro3 , they give great advice. The bike is going to need lots of service and the parts are going to be in worse shape than you expect. Price that in. If you pay with PayPal Good & Services, it should minimize your risk of them stealing your money. For your lower back pain: I'd encourage you to see a physio, especially at 40. I'm 31 and I was experiencing similar back pain due to my hamstrings being tight. Working with a physio on them got me to be pain free.

Phone calls Good photos PayPal Your good judgement Oh, and Kona Process 134 If the seller is near a bike shop, you could maybe use them to do an inspection for a nominal fee

Video chat to talk through the bike can show the bike exists in their possession. Can't guarantee they send it, of course.

pinkbike 2006 trek

Working on bike fit (maybe a professional fit) and core strength are both good suggestions. Also, it might make some people sad, but I truly believe a 27.5+ hardtail is a great bet if you’re low on budget but need some more compliance. Modern geo and lower pressure in the will reduce the hammering you’re getting. It was my one-bike choice for years, and works great for both of my parents as well as my partner.

I have bought and sold on PinkBike. That post is suspect for sure. If its too good too be true then.......... Always pay with PayPal because PayPal will have your back if the bike never shows up. Check the member registration date and phone number and ask lots of questions. More often than not they sell on eBay also so ask for their eBay user name and check the feedback and history. Good Luck.

AbeN128 said: Hi, I'm attempting to upgrade into a full suspension but have come to the realization that options at my price point ($2000-2500) are extremely limited and that I may be better off staying on a HT. Cheers, Abe Click to expand...

pinkbike 2006 trek

I agree with the idea that something about your bike fit is off if you find your back seizing after 8-10 miles. You could fiddle with saddle position, stem length, handlebar width, handlebar roll, etc. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy a full suspension though it probably lends importance to the idea of demoing a bunch of bikes and learning what works best for you

It's been a trend over the past year+ , prices too good to be true, 1 or 2 items for sale, zero sold items and a name like this ThomasQgj5EZ. 99% of the scammers I've seen in this time have these type of 6 digits/ letters not making sense after their name.<< This scammer today posted a new X01 cassette for $230. I immediately flagged him as a scammer and his account has since been removed.

pinkbike 2006 trek

Not saying they weren’t a scammer but bike closet has a XO1 cassette on sale for $250 (currently out of stock tho). Still have the XX1 (10-50t) for $299.

pinkbike 2006 trek

I also agree your current bike fit is suspect. Folks think an fs bike lets them has a comfy ass but it’s not, it gives you better traction - on fs and ht it’s your legs and arms that make the majority of the suspension so you’re still standing for the rough stuff. Wrt buying on pink bike, buying used… Even assuming the bike is perfect you really need to know what you want. What size and that you in fact love the bike. Buying without riding is a likely path to disappointment. I ride as many bikes as I can and I don’t like very many at all. The bikes I love I love. Your job is to find the bike you like, not by reading reviews but by trying them. I once did a 2.5 hr drive each way to buy a used bike. Got there and rode it down the block and… I thought it sucked. Great reviews, epic quality but my knees didn’t like its ride. Drove home empty handed with cash in my pocket. Big goal: don’t buy the wrong bike Next, someone selling a bike… the love is gone…. They’ve probably stopped doing maintanance… it’s a lucky duck that gets a perfect bike. Bushings corrode, shock needs service, etc. I’ve sold bikes and try and ensure everything is in great shape or disclosed. I always insist the buyer finds a shop near me that they like and hires them to checkout my bike, and to wrap and ship it if it checks out. I want buyer to have their own insurance, and a conversation with an impartial expert about the state of the bike they’re buying. Be suspect of free shipping, in what world does that make sense?

pinkbike 2006 trek

Make sure the seller has more than 1 post

Thank you all for the good Intel, will definitely keep this in mind as my search for the next bike continues. Sounds like I may have been wrong about needing to switch to a FS bike. Staying in the HT world does open up a ton of options. I guess I need to get out and demo some bikes.

  • Account must be more than a month old, and have sold many items, or be good at communication.
  • Be careful in cross borders sales. I like to only buy from established sellers across borders as I’ve had too many things lost or take weeks or sales fall through when sellers realize the cost of shipping.
  • Expect the bike to be in worse condition than advertised. People inevitably tolerate shortcomings on their bikes they don’t even notices
  • Expect to change bearings for FS bikes
  • Expect fork to not have been serviced
  • Expect to change chain and grip
  • Relatively new user
  • Has several bikes in different sizes
  • If seller has multiple bikes, check to see if backgrounds match
  • Is asking just slightly less than bike is probably worth
  • Asks for zelle or venmo
  • Offer to pick up bike and they suddenly live in a different city
  • Wont post specific pictures of bike (I like to ask for closeup of brake calipers to “check for leaks” and what fittings it uses since most bikes will need a brake bleed anyway)

Greg Minnaar Joins Norco – Full Interview

By Sarah Moore

After 16 years together, Greg Minnaar’s name was synonymous with that of the Santa Cruz Syndicate, but in a move that surprised everyone this off-season, even Minnaar himself, the Syndicate let go the 42-year-old South African. That left the four-time world champion scrambling to find a ride for 2024 mid-October in a year where budgets were tight.

Review: Atherton 130.X – The Lugged Carbon Cruiser

At this point Atherton Bikes needs little introduction – the brand is closing in on its 5th anniversary, and the lineup now includes four different models, with either 130, 150, 170, or 200mm of rear travel. All of the bikes are manufactured in North Wales, where carbon tubes are bonded to titanium lugs that are produced using additive manufacturing.

Opinion: Your Next Bike Will Be Steeper

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it, and I’m often a little bashful when it comes to this sort of thing, but I really, really really enjoy riding my Transition Spire. After using it as a long-term loaner I finally got around to buying it at the start of the year. I love that thing, and it was only really procrastination that had stopped me from putting my money where my mouth was until then.

Mike Kazimer’s 2024 Predictions

By Mike Kazimer

Ride to the Hills , one of the best mountain bike movies ever, was released in 2001. That means there’s a whole new generation of riders out there who weren’t even born when that classic came out, and who never got to experience the joys of ripping a derailleur off on a sketchy skinny, or of launching off flights of stairs until something broke (usually the bike, sometimes a bone or three).

I feel like the timing is right for an old-school freeride revival.

Review: BYB Tech Telemetry 2.0 – Using Data Acquisition to Improve Suspension Set Up

In the years 2020 and 2021 I didn’t work on any race teams. In that time, there was a big change and it’s a change that’s gathering pace involving data acquisition, and how commonplace it is on the circuit. Of course, it’s not entirely new. There have been one-off kits as well as production-made systems for years. So it might not just be the tech that’s developing quickly but also people’s attitudes around it.
