What our Guests say

Testimonials.

Captain Perez - Crazy Bahamian Testimonial

We had the best time with Perez and his first mate PJ! We had a full day on their boat and could not have asked for a better, more personalized experience. Their knowledge of Exuma and its surrounding cays is extensive. If you want an experience where you can do it all (grotto, pigs, sharks, an amazing sandbar with the BEST fresh-made-in-front-of-you conch salad, a delicious Bahamian lunch, iguanas, etc.) AND have a top notch personalized experience, then look no further than Crazy Bahamian. We can’t wait to come back for round two!

Captain Perez - Crazy Bahamian Testimonial

Perez and PJ provided an exceptional Exuma private boat tour for my family and I. He tailored the tour to our interests and made sure we experienced the best of what Exuma has to offer. Swim with pigs, nurse sharks, and we saw turtles. The highlight was a secluded beach picnic where we savored freshly caught seafood while basking in the stunning surroundings. Perez is a skilled and experienced captain who made us feel safe, comfortable, and well-cared-for throughout the trip. We highly recommend Perez for a private tour of the Exumas – it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exceeded all our expectations!

Kate S. Vancouver, Canada

private boat tour exuma

Booking a private boat tour with Perez for our Exuma adventure was the best decision I could have made! From start to finish, Perez and his son went above and beyond to make our experience truly exceptional. When I was afraid to enter the Thunderball Grotto, PJ was extremely patient and guided me slowly and carefully into and out of the grotto. The personalized attention and exceptional service he provided were unmatched, making us feel like VIPs throughout the entire tour! I highly recommend this father and son team if you need a private charter.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

Best day ever.

AMAZING TIME all 17 of us came off the Walking Dead Cruise for a day of fun and that is what we got ! Timeline was most important to us as we had a tight schedule and had to be back at a certain time. We arrived and got off the ship early to my surprise our driver Romeo was already waiting. He took us to the airport where we boarded 2 planes. All I am saying is they can fly us again anytime ( after a little girl scream attack 😳😬) ! From there we took 2 boats to see the Iguanas, then the Pigs ( amazing !! ) a fun stop at a sand bank for photos and bahama mamas ( best pictures ever ) then we went and swam with a TON of nurse sharks …. after that we were supposed to go into the grotto but the tide was too high and we did try to dock for some time but decided not to ( #nexttime) .. instead Ardy took us to see an old crashed drug plane and we got some time to swim around that which was super cool ! .. back to plane. back to bus back to cruise ship all on time ! We even had some time to shop at port and get our souveniers ! CAN NOT WAIT TO DO IT ALL AGAIN ! THANK YOU FLOAT YOUR BOAT BAHAMAS !!!

Dream Bachelorette Party

I couldn’t have planned a better bachelorette trip for my sister without the help of Tatjana. We had a group of 12 women, and none of us have been to the Bahamas before. When we contacted Tatjana, she sent us a few options for everything on our wishlist and even more. She made sure we were happy and taken care of, from our transportation to our stay. I really appreciated the attention to detail and care for our group because traveling to an unfamiliar place with a big group is not easy! I highly recommend you work with Float your boat Bahamas on your next trip! We will be back!

Very Professional!

Eleuthera vacation.

Booked three trips now with Float Your Boat each one was absolutely phenomenal. Unique experience each time, custom tailored to our adventure/relaxation desires. Amazing guides. Best resource by far for booking a complete Bahamas experience.

Best resource in the Bahamas!

Tatiana is just perfect, the most resourceful person you can find in the Bahamas. We told her our needs and she prepared everything for us. She definitely made our trip easy and truly enjoyable. If you want to travel like a local and discover all the hidden places, float your boat is the perfect choice. I would recommend this experience to everybody regardless of your needs. She will find the perfect choices for everyone! Thanks again!

Spanish Wells Adventure!

This was the second time we contacted Tatjana for our trip. She took care of the whole itinerary (accommodation recommendations, excursions on land and by boat, and restaurants) and I couldn’t have had a better time! It will save you so much time, stress and for sure money to plan your stay with her. She was available and our contact person at all times with any needs and our single point of contact on the island – 5-star service so we could just enjoy our stay! Can’t wait to be back ❤️

12/10 Experience!

I was given the best experience! I was a looking for someone to handle all my needs and give me a fun tour! I received nothing short, Tatjana was super clear with expectations and made sure my tour and transportation was on time! I also stayed in her gorgeous air bnb – would highly recommend booking all your Bahamas experiences with float your boat!!

Float Your Boat Bahamas is awesome

Tatjana was awesome. Very attentive to our needs and got us in a trip last minute that others said they couldn’t. I wish i would have found this place prior to my trip and I would have gladly paid this company to plan it all out. She responded quick to every text. Also got us rates hundreds cheaper than others. She made sure to provide us a very detailed itinerary and gave us contact information and confirmations for everything. Not once did we have to look for anyone on this excursion, they found us at every stop and directed us on to next step. Will be using again in the future. Thank you

Perfectly Organized Trip to Spanish Wells

Our trip to Spanish Wells was beyond our expectations! If you follow all the tips and advice in their blog post, your trip will be so easy. It was super easy to get there, and the Airbnb, we chose (Palmetto Cottage, from the blog post) was so cute, clean and right in front of a beautiful sandbar you could walk straight out to from the beach ! A definite highlight of the was the boat trip they organised for us. Captain Shaw was awesome – he had a really nice boat, was so fun and friendly. He took us to the most incredible sights: an empty sandbar in the middle of the water littered with starfish, rope swings at another sandbar in the middle of the water and we even saw some dolphins swimming around the boat! The other road trip recommendations in North Eleuthera were super cool as well. This trip is a must. (Just make sure to see what restaurants are open when as they aren’t all open 7 days a week!)

Go-to for unique experiences

Tatjana who runs Float Your Boat Bahamas is such a great resource of information on Bahamas tourism. We traveled to Exumas with FYB and had an incredibly memorable day on a private boat avoiding all the crowds. Her blog is great and gave us so many unique non-tourist ideas while on island like special local restraunts (CocoPlum) and beaches (Love Beach).

One night trip to Staniel Cay

My family and I went on a trip to the Exumas, and loved every second of it, thanks to Float Your Boat Bahamas. Highly recommended for booking any Bahamian adventure. Tatjana was a great help. Everything was clearly communicated, well-priced, and very organized. We loved it all — from the flight, the boat rides to various destinations around the Exumas, and our cottage. Especially loved the restaurant recommendation at the Staniel Cay Yatch Club. Definitely 5 stars!

Highly Recommend!

Had an amazing experience with FYBB from start to finish. Communication was excellent and every detail was planned out for us. We swam with sea turtles, saw the pigs on the beach, snorkeled a coral reef, and had a blast! Captain Vargo was great. They even included pick up and drop off from our hotel. Definitely recommend!

White glove treatment!

Book with Float Your Boat for a white glove experience. Tatyana provided excellent customer attention. We received door to door service from our hotel to the plane, boat and on the return. We loved our day in the Exumas – each stop was beautiful and unique. Our group of 8 had a private boat with Sanchez at the helm who was a great guide. One of the perks of flying to Exuma was getting to the high traffic stops before anyone else and being able to spend more time at each destination. I would absolutely book with Float Your Boat again!

Climber823443 ON TRIPADVISOR

We rented a boat from Island Exclusive Rentals for the week. Communication was great and with it being our first time in Exuma they were very helpful with information and suggestions. The boat was delivered to our house as promised and was in great condition. Being able to keep the boat for the entire week instead of a one-day rental gave us the flexibility to see so much more and was the highlight of our vacation. I can't wait to return and I wouldn't rent from anyone else.

Charles M IMPECCABLE!

We used Island Exclusive around July 4th 2021 for a single-day tour of the Exumas chain; we also rented two boats for self-operated use for the rest of the week. I can't speak highly enough of Island Exclusive Boat Rentals. The boats were in great shape, the crew was kind and attentive, and Leah's service was extraordinary. I wish I could give them six stars, they were that good.

BRUCE B  AMAZING SERVICE & FUN

The only place we could locate that would allow overnight rental at our dock. They brought the boat, and picked it up. Service was prompt and everyone was genuine and friendly. We got four full days and felt no pressure to start late or end early. The boat was fantastic, well maintained and clean. Great for 6 adults to travel all around Exuma and the area Cay's and isles. If you need a boat rental, this is a fantastic choice.

The Exuma Expert AMAZING BOAT RENTAL!

We had an AMAZING time renting this gorgeous little thing from Island Exclusive Boat Rentals. We called the day before, and Leah and her team were so professional, responsive, helpful, and just made us feel very confident using them for the first time. The boat was clean, and we ABSOLUTELY LOVED the Bluetooth system that they have installed...didn't even need to bring our speakers. We'd definitely rent from them again, and recommend them 100 times over! Can't wait for the next time!

Jeff R BEST BAHAMA BOAT EXPERIENCE

Island Exclusive Rentals was a great experience. In the years of boating in the Exumas this was our best experience. The boat was clean, in great shape, full of fuel and in top shape. Elvis and Leah dropped the boat off right on time and the whole reservation and rental process was quick and easy. By far our best experience in the Exumas. I highly recommend them!

Exuma Escapes T-Shirt at Exuma Escapes

Island Escapes Bahamas Ltd started as a micro business back in 2014 when two young sailors decided to bridge the gap between Nassau Bahamas and the Exuma cays on a daily schedule. This distance covered some 100 nautical miles one way and a little over 200 nautical miles round trip. The feat seemed impossible initially as the only water craft we had access to was just a mere 28 feet in length. In modern day terms, it could easily be classified as a dinghy. The company built its legacy taking 8 passengers along with Captain and Mate over the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean daily facing treacherous weather and seas until the brand was forced to be recognized on a national scale.

private boat tour exuma

Since 2014, (formerly Exuma Escapes) has provided the best island excursions from Nassau! The most beautiful place on earth!

Exuma, Bahamas

The seas of the Exuma Islands have been described by astronauts orbiting the Earth as the most beautiful waters on the planet. Composed of 365 islands, one for each day of the year, a visit to the Exumas is an invitation to get on a boat and experience the emotion of the sea and its surroundings at its best. The Exumas are famous for their sapphire blue waters, which are so beautiful that their brilliant colors can be seen from space. This chain of islands boasts secluded, footprint-free beaches, deserted cayes, and ultra-exclusive resorts. Nature outnumbers man here, the coastlines are unspoiled and the private islands are home to some of the world’s most famous celebrities, including a plethora of four-legged local celebrities.

Swim with Pigs

Meet the adorable and famous swimming pigs of Exuma

This is an experience not to be missed while in town. Do you want to know how the pigs got to Pig Beach? We are not sure. Big Major Cay is an uninhabited island and the pigs are not indigenous to the island. Some claim that they were abandoned by a group of sailors who intended to return and cook them. The stories are many and no one is sure which one is correct. But on the one hand, these pigs have become one of the great attractions of this place. No other place in the world offers the traveler an encounter with a whole key of pigs.

Swimming with nurse sharks

Less than an hour from Nassau, in a small town called Compass Cay in Exuma, there is a corner of crystal clear turquoise waters, where nurse sharks and multi-colored fish abound. Swim with sharks. This is one of the tours offered by the island of Exuma, a paradise made up of 365 keys, where you can dive and snorkel in spectacular grottoes and caves, as well as swim with pigs, interact with iguanas on the beach and enjoy a rainbow. of blues

Dean's Blue Hole on Long Island

The world’s deepest salt water blue hole can be found near Clarence Town on the coast of Long Island, The Bahamas.

A blue hole is an underwater cavern and sometimes it is also called a sinkhole.

There is no shortage of blue holes on the planet, but Dean’s blue hole is the deepest and considered one of the most beautiful ones as well.

It is widely considered to be one of the world’s best diving and snorkelling site.

The water is very clear as its visibility reaches up to 30 meters. The blue hole’s deepest point is 202 metres (663 ft) but if you pass the hole and swim around, the depth of the water will be only waist-deep. Because of its enclosed nature, wind does not reach it and there are no big waves either, making it an ideal place even for beginner swimmers.

Typically, blue holes look like ponds, but Dean’s blue hole is a different one in many ways. It is connected to the Atlantic through an inlet on one side and framed by cliffs and white sand beaches on the other.

The diameter of the hole is between 25 and 35 meters, thus it is easy to swim past it. Once you reach 20 meters below the water, the diameter of the blue hole extends to approximately 100 meters wide.

Besides being one of the best spots in the world to dive and swim, it is also a marvellous sight in itself. Beaches around the blue hole are also clear and excellent spots to tan in the sun.

Even though this private tour is expensive, it is worth it and would be similar price if you are a group of four or more. And the best part is the it is completely customizable.

“ Excellent adventure! The day went extremely smoothly from beginning to end. We boarded at Senor Frogs which was a short walk from the port and they had snacks and drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. We were able to swim with HUGE turtles and at a small reef with plenty of fish. They provided snorkel gear and noodles for our use and fitted the masks. One of our party had never snorkeled and they showed great patience with my niece. Swimming with the pigs was also alot of fun! They took a ton of pictures which they drop boxed and e-mailed to us .” Scott_A

Must Visit Places On Exuma Boat Tours and Excursions

Big major cay or the pig beach.

Swimming pigs in Exuma

I am sure you must have seen the famous swimming pigs on Instagram or other social media networks. Big Major Cay is an uninhabited island and home to the swimming pigs. This is one of the first places for many boat tours. You will get to see and swim with the famous swimming pigs, feed them milk and bread and enjoy time at the beach.

Thunderball Grotto

Thunderball Grotto is another famous spot on your full day trip to the Exuma. It is the famous grotto from James Bond movies. No pictures or videos do justice to this place. It is also a great place to snorkel as well.

Nurse sharks at Compass Cay

Compass Cay is a popular place in The Exumas and home to the gentle nurse sharks. You get to feed, hold and swim with the nurse sharks. It is a fun visit for the whole family.

Staniel Cay

Staniel Cay is one of the popular islands where many hotels and resorts are based. It is usually the base for your powerboat adventures or private charters and go to lunch spot for many boat tours.

Iguana Beach

Iguana on a beach

As the name suggests, Iguana Beach is where Iguanas roam around freely. The crystal clear turquoise waters at the beach are perfect to chill and relax.

Norman’s Cay plane wreck

Snorkel the plane wreck at Norman’s Cay. You can see many sea creatures along with the plane when you snorkel.

Visit A Sandbar

Woman swinging on a swing on a sandbar

Sandbars are one of my favorite places to visit on Exuma boat tours. The tours guides are usually very knowledgeable and know the best sandbars in the cays to stop and relax. We stopped at one sandbar with a swing and most beautiful turquoise waters.

Tips and Recommendations For Exuma Boat Tours and Excursions

Exuma boat tours and excursions: faqs, what are exuma boat tours.

Exuma is a collection of islands and cays and is divided into Great Exuma, Little Exuma and Exuma Cays. Many of these cays are accessible only by boat and hard to navigate unless you are an experienced tour guide or a local. Exuma boat tours are guided tours offered by several companies to explore the Exumas from Nassau and other cities in The Bahamas. The boat captains come with years of experience on the islands and are also the best tour guides.

Many tours operate as a day trip from Nassau on a powerboat and stop at multiple spots including the famous swimming Pigs Beach (Big Major Cay), Compass Cay to feed the nurse sharks, Thunderball Grotto (famous from the James Bond movies), Iguana beach, sandbars and more. Taking a boat tour is best way to experience the archipelago’s beauty!

Why should I take a private Exuma boat tour?

Boat parked on a beach in Exuma

The Exuma boat tours and excursions can be private or semi-private. Depending on the company and size of the boat, semi-private tours have a limit of about 6-30 people. If you prefer not to be limited by others’ schedule and explore the islands on your own time and itinerary, choose a private Exuma boat tour. Be aware that private tours are more expensive than semi-private tours depending on your group. Most tours come with a knowledgeable guide who knows the perfect places to see sea life, sandbars and reefs. With a private tour, you will get a more intimate experience versus a semi-private one.

How long do Exuma boat tours and excursions last?

The duration of Exuma boat tours varies depending on the specific itinerary and tour operator. Most tours range from half a day (4-5 hours) to full day (8-10 hours). It’s essential to check the tour details beforehand to understand the duration and plan your day accordingly. Some tours listed below also offer 4-7 day exculsive tours on a catamaran. We took the full day tour and thought it was perfect to see all the best places in Exuma.

What should I bring on an Exuma boat tour?

It is best to overpack and be prepared for your Exuma boat adventure. Consider bringing essentials such as sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a towel, swimwear, a waterproof camera, waterproof phone case, change of clothes and  personal items that you may need. I also recommend packing snacks, drinks (especially if you are traveling with kids) and cash for additional purchases or gratuities.

Are Exuma boat tours suitable for all ages?

Exuma boat tours can be enjoyed by individuals of various ages. However, it is important to check with the tour operator if they have any specific age restrictions or guidelines. Some tours may not be suitable for very young children or individuals with mobility issues, while others cater to families and offer activities suitable for all ages.

We traveled with our toddler on the week of her second birthday and she enjoyed many activities. One thing to consider is that it can get windy and the power boat rides can be bumpy.

Is swimming experience necessary for Exuma boat tours?

While swimming experience is not always required, It is beneficial to have basic swimming skills, especially if you plan on snorkeling or swimming. Many Exuma boat tours offer options for non-swimmers, including opportunities to observe marine life from the boat or enjoy the beautiful beaches. They also provide life vests if you prefer to use one.

Which Exuma boat tour is the best?

The best Exuma boat tour depends on your preference for duration and itinerary. If you have a full day to spare we highly recommend this Exuma full day adventure tour.

Do the boat tours pick up from hotels in Nassau?

Some of them do pick up from hotels in Nassau and Paradise Island where The Atlantis and Four Seasons are located. Several others provide a meeting point at the marina or elsewhere to start the tour.

What is the best time to go on Exuma boat tours?

The peak season typically runs from December to April when the weather is dry and temperatures are pleasant. However, these months also tend to be busier and more expensive. The shoulder seasons, from May to June and September to November, offer a good balance of pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and potentially better deals. We took the boat tour end of March and it was perfect in terms of weather.

Are food and drinks served on Exuma boat tours?

Yes, most boat tours serve snacks, drinks and most of them stop for lunch at Staniel Cay. Please check with the tour operator beforehand. We recommend taking snacks and drinks especially if you have kids.

Is the boat tour recommended for pregnant women and people with health conditions?

It is generally not recommended as the powerboat ride can get bumpy. Please check with the tour company.

Is there a chance that the tour will get canceled?

The tour company generally communicate beforehand if there is a chance for the tour to get canceled due to bad weather or other reasons.

Can I fly to Exuma instead of boat tour from Nassau?

Yes! Some tours also have private charters that fly you from Nassau to Staniel Cay. Your boat adventure starts and ends in Staniel Cay. It saves time and cuts the total amount of time you will spend on the boat.

Final Thoughts: Exuma boat tours and excursions

Exuma boat tours are the best way to explore the remote Cays and islands of Exuma. The tours take you to the most popular islands like the swimming pigs beach, Compass Cay to feed the nurse sharks, Thunderball grotto, Iguana beach as well as unique sandbars in the Exuma and great lunch spots in Staniel Cay. If you are not sure which one to choose, the Exuma full-day experience is our top pick!

THE CAYS TO EXUMA

Exuma's premier private tour boat company, who we are and what we do.

You might be wondering, what is a Cay?  Pronounced "key", they are small low lying islands or banks made up of coral, rock and/or sand.  Consisting of 365 cays in Exuma alone, you could stop at one each day of the year and see something different every day.  The Cays to Exuma was named as a play on words so tourists can see and experience everything the beautiful Bahamian archipelago has to offer.  We want to steal the keys to your heart so you'll come back year after year for a memorable vacation.

Everyone has different approaches and priorities when it comes to vacation.  The team members at The Cays to Exuma are dedicated to providing you the best possible and memorable experience when on tour with us.  We have many years of experience on the water and want to show you all that Exuma has to offer.  You'll have the opportunity to feed the swimming pigs, walk on a massive sandbar, swim with turtles and more!  The choice is up to you as we offer various tours that can accommodate anyone. A favorite is the harbour tour where you'll be able to swim with sea turtles, snorkel at starfish beach, walk on a massive sandbar, pet stingrays, snorkel a coral reef and bluehole, and float down the lazy river with a cold drink in hand. Definitely a tour not to miss while in Great Exuma!

Unlike other tour companies, WE DON'T OVERCROWD and we take a maximum of 10-12 guests.  Our goal is to provide a personal unique experience and not a large group environment.  We offer complimentary Bahamian beer, rum punch, bottled water and soft drinks.  You are also more than welcome to bring your own beverages and snacks on the boat.

Due to insurance regulations, we do not provide life jackets to children under 50lbs and/or 8 yrs of age. You must provide your own properly fitted PFD for every child on board.

We had the best time with Jay and Ryan! They were very accommodating and had good vibes all around. Highly recommend booking a tour!

We wanted to have a family day on the ocean and the tour was everything we hoped for. The captain and entire crew made us feel at home and were so accommodating. Essence gave us a day to remember, beautiful family memories in the Bahamas. The snorkeling and beach time at Rose Island was the best.

Great captain and Tripp. You get to see a lot of fish and snorkel. This is definitely your go to for a charter when you’re in the Bahamas!

We had a fantastic trip with captain Jay. He was friendly, accommodating, and we had the best day exploring, snorkelling in clear waters to spot the turtles at green key, and the fish at the coral reef at rose island. Amazing views, and a day we’ll never forget. Highly recommend!

The tour was great and the boat ride was smooth the water was amazing and learning about the Bahamian culture and history just top it off! Essence boat tours for the win!

Joey was such an enthusiastic young man! His tours are thorough and exciting! Only the best in Nassau! I’d definitely come again! 🥳 AMAZINGGG EXPERIENCE!

Joey Ford was the greatest captain I’ve ever had. He knew his way around every island and was very descriptive when describing each animal we passed. He was very enthusiastic and even went out of his way to teach me how to swim. It was a wonderful experience for me and my group and I can’t wait to give him another visit. 10/10

I booked a tour with 5 of my friends and it was such a great time! We love Essence Boat Tours and will definitely be booking again on our next trip to Nassau! Please do yourself a favor and take a trip with Jay!

Awesome experience.

Jay took a group of 4 of us out for the day. He was on time for the pickup, and gave us the best day we had on our trip to the Bahamas. We toured the famous homes on the coast, snorkeled with turtles, cruised to a private beach, and finished up with a nice lunch on another private beach. This was the proper way to tour the Bahamas with an expert guide and good vibes all day on the boat! Thanks again Jay!

My friends and I had a wonderful time with essence boat tours during our vacation. We got everything we expected and more. Will definitely booked them on our next vacation to The Bahamas.

Amazing experience and excellent service. 20/20

Always an awesome experience with Essence Boat Tours! Joey takes us to the most beautiful and secluded parts of Rose Island. His trips are always fun and entertaining. Def recommend booking a tour with Joey!

My friends and I booked a tour with essence boat tours and couldn’t have had a better time!! Everything about the experience was top notch and we got to see some of the most beautiful views! Chonky girls forever. We will definitely be back!!

Jay took us out on his boat the first thing in the morning . it was phenomenal!! best customer service I’ve ever had provided snacks drinks drinks entertainment amazing music it was a whole pile. I highly highly recommend going going with essence tours. We loved it so much we did it twice.

My family & I had a wonderful time! We’re definitely booking with Essence Tours again.

When it comes to describing the beauties that we can find in The Exumas, words always fall short. Even poetic souls will be overwhelmed when contemplating its white sand and the intense and brilliant turquoise of the waters. But where are they? The Exumas are southeast of Nassau -the capital of The Bahamas-, and are made up of 365 keys. For traveling souls, this is a true tropical paradise, with beaches inhabited only by the murmur of the waves. That does not mean that when you get here you have to live a "Castaway" experience sleeping under a palm tree, because if there is one thing The Bahamas have, they are spectacular hotels

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

There’s so much more to this lesser-known island in The Bahamas than a failed Fyre Festival

author image

The Bahamas is hiding that it’s amazing, affordable, and the gem of the Caribbean (Picture: Getty)

More than 8,000 of the world’s ultra-elite flocked to the Bahamas in the spring of 2017 for Fyre Festival , which promised world-class headliners, luxury accommodation and five star cuisine – all the tune of up to £75,000 a ticket.

But we all know what happened next. When the masses arrived on Great Exuma – one of the so-called Out Islands of the Bahamas – they were greeted with a ‘post-apocalyptical nightmare’ : a sea of white tents, stacks of wet mattresses, and no electricity or running water.

Sharing their frustrations on Twitter, the world watched a play-by-play of Fyre Festival as it burned.

The now iconic cheese sandwich was posted, with the hashtag ‘dumpsterfyre’ and the rest, as they say, is history.

But seven years on from the iconic flop, and tourists haven’t been deterred from visiting Great Exuma, where Fyre Festival was held.

While the majority of tourists flock to the Bahamian capital of Nassau, on New Providence, Great Exuma is quieter, but still has those white sandy beaches, delicious street food and laid-back island vibes.

Mr Sandman, thanks for sending me a dream… (Picture: Dom Hines)

With it’s turquoise seas glistening in the distance, according to astronauts when viewed from space, Great Exuma is the most beautiful place on Earth. And I can attest to the fact that, once you’re taking it all in on solid ground (or should that be, white sandy beach?) it’s pretty stunning too.

I arrived in Great Exuma via the country’s main international airport in Nassau, followed by a 30 minute flight to the largest of the 365 Exuma islands.

Sandals is a stunning paradise in Great Exuma (Picture: Sandals)

Sandals Emerald Bay would be my home. I’ll admit, I expected a soulless high-rise but, to my surprise, it was actually a villa-style property sitting on a lush 500 tropical acres, close to the beach. Oh and it’s so expansive, that despite being fully occupied it felt secluded. Bliss.

I was ready to soak in all it had to offer, but that would have to wait as it was was already time to hit the road.

I was to get an authentic taste of Exuma with the People-to-People program, run by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, which connects visitors to locals for a ‘non-touristy’ experience. You can just sign up to join in all the fun.

I was invited to join a local family for dinner in their backyard who told me this was the standard view in thebackyard of most Exuma homes (Picture: Dom HInes)

I arrived at the home of locals Katharina and Victor and was instantly hit by the mouth-watering aroma of an authentic Bahamian meal being prepared – which would soon become my new obsession, conch fritters. Conch, a culinary delicacy, is a common name of a number of different medium-to-large-sized shellfish.

After checking out the meal prep, I was taken to where I’d be dining, the home’s back garden. But with its panoramic view of the ocean, it wasn’t your average backyard!

It wasn’t long before I felt like one of the family as the cook’s youngest children excitedly grabbed my hands to show me around the property as neighbours popped by to extend a welcome and sharing the stories.

What followed was an evening of lively conversation and laughter while tucking into seafood and rice and peas. And as the sun set on the gathering, even the uninvited guests – the mosquitos – seemed sad to see me go.

'The Best and Best': Enough said! (Picture: Dom Hines)

After a much-needed sleep in my room at Sandals, in the super comfortable fit for a Queen-size bed, the next morning I was on a boat chartered by Exuma Water Sports for their must-do, four-hour, Seven Beaches & Moriah Marine Park tour. The great thing about Sandals is that there are a range of both on and off resort activities on offer.

During the tour, you explore caves, coves and seven of the worlds most stunning beaches sipping on copious refreshments. This excursion can be added to your package at Sandals, which costs £150.

Our guide, Justin, made sure I glimpsed every one of the exotic sea life creatures flitting around the crystal-clear water as we passed by an unreal secluded beach. ‘We hosted a private party for Taylor Swift there,’ he then casually said as we passed the spot in Moriah Bay. As you do!

Next, it was time to alight at a breathtaking sandbar — a permanent fixture in the midst of the ocean. I stepped on to it and immediately felt almost invincible, as though I was ‘walking on water’. To stand in the middle of the sea with a strip of pristine white sand extending before me to as far as the eye can see, was nothing short of overwhelming.

Walking on water in the middle of the deep Caribbean sea, which I challenge anyone to do and not feel like a bad b***h (Picture: Dom Hines)

A brief journey then led to another of The Bahamas’ many small nameless islands where after a little stroll, a ‘secret’ beach appeared.

After I jumped into the sea, and floated and glided through the narrow caves, it was a back on the boat for a speedy sail to local favourite, Chat ‘N’ Chill bar on Stocking Island, accessible only by boat.

There, I tucked into delicious mahi-mahi fish with rice and salad for £15, while sipping on a rum punch (The Bahamas is after all, the home of rum). Heaven.

Chat n' Chill, an idyllic Exuma beach day retreat, is literally what it says on the tin (Picture: Dom Hines)

Then more heaven back at Emerald Bay, where I ate yet again, but this time some tasty Asian-fusion cuisine in one of its 11 restaurants.

If you want culture, Great Exuma has that too. Another Sandals excursion was the Historical Sightseeing Tour, during which we explored the Pompey Memorial and Steventon Jail Ruins.

Being blue in the Bahamas is apparently a good thing (Picture: Dom Hines)

Pompey is a national hero in the Bahamas. Once a slave for Lord John Rolle, a British landowner living in Barbado, in 1830, Pompey, then 32, led a rebellion against his slave master along with 43 slaves from Lord Rolle’s plantation in Exuma.

When caught, Pompey was given several lashes – but his actions managed to stop the transfer order of 77 slaves, which would have led to their separation from their families, including children.

His act was a precursor to emancipation in The Bahamas, which happened in August 1838. Now, a memorial statue stands in front of the dilapidated jail where many slaves were sent for disobedience.

After the tour hosted by our knowledgeable guide, historian Kenneth Nixon, I popped over to Uncle El’s Conch Shack, a little stand in front of the old jail ruins, with the ever-present ocean in the backdrop.

It’s run by a local food legend, Uncle El, who is quite the character – not shy about telling you why he’s the best conch salad maker on the island. After tucking into his fresh, appetising treat, which cost just £3, I think his claim would be hard to dispute.

Master at work: Uncle El is a local legend thanks to his 'best in Exuma' conch salads at his conch shack (Picture: Dom Hines)

Back at Sandals, I indulged in all the resort has to offer: I had to go for a quick dive with their amazing diving team, have at least 100 more of their tropical fruit punches at their sprawling, never busy bar, and tuck into chicken at their jerk shack.

Now while my meal was lovely, it didn’t quite pack that jerk chicken punch that you’d get in places like Jamaica – so do tuck in, but be warned!

Belly full and bags packed. It was bye, bye paradise and hello, Nassau! After all, I couldn’t not visit the capital city of The Bahamas.

The stunning powder-white sand casually rising in the middle of the deep ocean in Exuma (Picture: Dom Hines)

I was bracing myself for Nassau to be the total opposite of Exuma. Bahamas has a population of 415, 000 and Nassau has 70% of them, plus It’s beloved by American tourists, given it’s proximity to Florida.

But despite the foot traffic there, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the place is filled with pockets of serenity at every turn.

It’s where the country’s colonial past is most on display, with buildings from that era still meticulously maintained and turned into, offices and museums, including The Pompey Museum , named after Pompey, the heroic slave from Exuma.

The museum, which is only £2 to enter, is within the historic Vendue House, which was constructed before 1769 and was a marketplace until the late 1800s, where enslaved Africans were traded during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Amidst colonial buildings there are coffee shops, restaurants, and designer boutiques.

Even the Bahamian skies show out when welcoming visitors flying from Exuma to Nassau (Picture: Dom Hines)

Next, I went on a one and a half hour historic walking tour, which included the grand mansion once occupied by the abdicated King Edward VIII when he was Governor of The Bahamas in the Second World War. Nassau’s centre was pristine, by the way, with not even a stray cigarette butt insight.

I also put a postcard in the famous and still-functioning post box in Parliament Street, which bears the initials of Queen Elizabeth II – its style was one of the first used in Britain in 1852. It’s believed to be the the only pillar box of it’s kind in the Caribbean. (Two weeks later and that post card, which I forgot about, rocked up at my London flat!)

This still-functioning, famous, post box in Parliament Street, is from the 1800’s and bears the initials of Queen Elizabeth II (Picture: Dom Hines)

Next, I headed to private Salt Cay (Blue Lagoon Island) by boat to take in thestunning scenery, a gorgeous lagoon and yet more of those white sand beaches.

I relaxed my tour-weary legs at the beach before enjoying a local picnic of a delicious fish meal, washed down with the obligatory rum punch. The five-hour experience with Dolphin Encounters (again, available via Sandals) is pricey at £95, but is worth every penny.

I could move into the Sandals resort in Nassau (Picture: Sandals)

I made my way back to the my Nassau Sandals Royal Bahamian resort in its new villa-style section, where some suites come with their own plunge pool.

There’s also access by boat to their own private island. The beach club and restaurant here is a must visit, if only for the open-air beach spa, Red Lane Spa .

You get to the spa boat from Sandals Hotel, Nassau (Picture: Dom Hines)

My incredible massage would prove to be just the prep I needed for what was set to be one the best and heady nights I’ve ever had.

Because in a sea of yellow, blue and black – the colours of the country’s flag – Nassau transformed in the early hours from a relatively quiet city centre into the capital of revelry.

A must visit! Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation at Vendue House, Nassau (Picture: Dom Hines)

Starting at 2am, steel pans, marching bands, drums, and boom boxes greeted my ears with catchy, booming music as seemingly the whole town gathered to celebrate Junkanoo , to mark 50 years of the country’s independence.

Named after the West African John Canoe Festival, Junkanoo originated in the Bahamas around the 17th century as a masquerade. Slaves with their faces hidden under a mask of flour paste, celebrated on Boxing Day and the day after Christmas. Then, the flour masks were replaced by the more recognisable wire masks held on a stick. Today, Junkanoo is a bi-annual party celebrating the Bahamian culture.

There is no festival more visually thrilling than the phenomenal Junkanoo extravaganza in the heart of the Bahmian capital, Nassau (Picture: Dom Hines)

From the seemingly perennial groups of dancers parading down the streets in colourful costumes followed by musicians, there was non-stop cheering on by the crowds of locals and visitors alike.

A vibrant and surreal scene, this parade suddenly saw my ageing hips gyrating, arms flaying and head wildly bopping at the street party.

The best swimming with pigs tours in the bahamas.

Discover how to responsibly swim with pigs in the Bahamas.

Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas

Swimming pigs of the Bahamas in the Out Islands of the Exuma

Getty Images

Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.

If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.

Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?

Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.

How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas

Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.

Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.

How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida

There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:

Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip

Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours

This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.

Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.

Is Pig Beach ethical?

Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.

In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.

In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:

  • A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
  • Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
  • A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.

While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.

How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach

All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:

  • Remain calm at all times.
  • Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
  • Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
  • Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
  • If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.

What to pack for your excursion

Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Beach towel
  • Camera and/or phone
  • Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
  • Change of clothing
  • Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
  • Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)

It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.

It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.

Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.

Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.

There's so much more to this paradise island than a failed Fyre Festival

M ore than 8,000 of the world’s ultra-elite flocked to the Bahamas in the spring of 2017 for Fyre Festival , which promised world-class headliners, luxury accommodation and five star cuisine – all the tune of up to £75,000 a ticket.

Heaven.

This annual event, which could rival the spectacle of the Rio Carnival, was the fitting end to my time on the island. The Bahamas: it’s no Fyre Festival.
