Daughtry is a North Carolina based rock band headed by 5th season American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry. Adopting sounds from influences like 90s grunge pioneers Pearl Jam as well as alternative-meal acts such as Fuel, Daughtry has developed a style that is nostalgic and heavy hitting.

Daughtry was one of the few American Idol contestants to successfully push hard rock iconoclasm into finalist levels and was also bold enough to jeopardize it to experiment in folk and dance music later on in his career. Despite his recent tendencies to dip his finger in other music genres he has kept true to his principal sound.

Chris Daughtry was born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, US, but spent the majority of his childhood in Lasker. When he was 14 he relocated to Palmyra, Virginia with his parents and eventually moved right outside of Greensboro in McLeansville, North Carolina. When Chris was 16 years old he approached music in a more serious manner, focusing on his skills as a singer and seeking out instruction on the guitar. Chris formed several bands in high school and participated in two high school productions: “Peter Pan” and “The Wiz”.

Chris acted as lead singer and rhythm guitarist in his high school band Cadence and produced one album with the group in 1999 entitled “All Eyes on You”. Chris later joined the group Absent Element and released the album “Uprooted” with them in 2005.

A year later Chris was on American Idol. He auditioned in Denver, Colorado with the song “Letter” a cover of Memphis band The Box Tops (this group was headed by Alex Chilton later of Big Star fame). Daughtry instantly caught on with the general public. He was this season’s answer to the rocker craze that predecessors Bo Bice and Constantine Maroulis previously instigated. Daughtry also had the charisma that sailed across America’s TV sets and the family man attitude that many could empathize with. Apart from Daughtry’s personal and social disposition he swept audiences off their feet with his electric and gritty covers. He made many fans after his cover of Fuel’s “Hemorrhage (In My Hands)”, one of them actually being the band who requested that he be their lead singer. Daughtry also performed a rendition of Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line” in the style of the group Live. Despite Daughtry’s trailblazing run on the show he lost out to Katharine McPhee, but at least made it to the top 4 before being terminated.

After his departure from American Idol, Daughtry wasted no time in prepping for album production. Daughtry signed with Idol’s 19 Entertainment group and RCA Records and recruited guitarists Jeremy Brady and Josh Steely, bassist Josh Paul, and drummer Joey Barnes as his backing band. His first album was the all caps self-titled debut “DAUGHTRY”. The album was led off with the hit single “It’s Not Over”. “DAUGHTRY” ranked incredibly high on the charts, staying within the Top 10 for months.

Daughtry already had 5 hit songs in the Top 40 before he issued his 2009 follow up album “Leave This Town”. Daughtry’s next album “Break the Spell” was produced by Howard Benson as was his previous releases. “Break the Spell” had some commercial difficulties in comparison to Daughtry’s past albums; however, it’s single, “Crawling Back to You” skyrocketed to No. 6 on the U.S. Adult Pop charts.

On Daughtry’s fourth album “Baptized” Martin Johnson of Boys Like Girls hopped on board to help give the album a more atmospheric and pop oriented touch. The album was released in November 2013, and was spearheaded with the single “Waiting for Superman”.

Live reviews

Really disappointed. With the concert and with the venue. Venue first; O2 Academy Leeds. We had tickets for the balcony which I have been in before so I know that seats are not reserved. It's first come gets the best seats, fair enough. When we got there 30 mins after doors, the whole balcony was full. There is limited standing room down the long sides which was also 2 or 3 deep. The small openings at the bar behind the seating were full of people also. So basically there was nowhere to watch the show from. We eventually perched at the top of the steps with three others, blocking anyone coming and going. Some people gave up and sat on the floor so could see nothing. Totally oversubscribed and really unfair. We didn't rock up 2 minutes before the main act, we were in 20 mins before the support came on and it was rammed. Poor effort O2.

So, the gig. Pretty boring to be fair. I've been looking forward to seeing Daughter for a long time as he is a great vocalist, and tonight his voice was great. But whoever drew up the set list should be taken out and shot. Dreary, slow, boring songs right off the bat and almost all the way through. He sang a couple of his good rockers and that was it, the rest was turgid. And he gave the appearance that he was pretty full of his own importance. It was a self-indulgent hour and a half. I even left before the end as I was bored stiff and there was zero atmosphere up in the balcony. Could have been so much better.

Daughtry, the rock band fronted by its name sake Chris Daughtry have had a gruelling touring schedule since they took to the road shortly after their career began in 2006. In less than a decade they have clocked up nearly five hundred shows yet with every single appearance, the band appears invigorated and intent on beating their own personal best for performing live.

The audience is clearly appreciative of this level of effort as they applaud with force at the finale of every single track. Daughtry shows versatility throughout the evening, swapping the thumping beats for softer strings during an acoustic version of 'Witness' followed by a perfect cover of 'Wicked Game' by Chris Isaak which gives the collective room goosebumps. The guitars are reinstated for 'Waiting for Superman' and 'September' which are played back to back at blistering pace as the band comes together as a whole to really showcase what they can do. The musical ability is a credit to having spent so long on the road as a unit and it has clearly paid off due to the high level of proficiency each member attains along with the loyalty of their fanbase.

Since I do not watch American Idol, I had no idea that the man behind the band Daughtry came from that series. I got into them when I heard “Coming Home” on the radio and just thought they sounded great and he had a great voice. I also thought the production on the song was very good and that the guitar break in the song was wonderful.

I saw him at an outdoor festival with many other bands. They were not the headliner but they were one of the attractions. They played about 70 minutes and did about 15 songs.

He closed with “Coming Home” and dedicated it to his hometown. The band was great musically and sounded very tight. You could tell they had played a long time together.

The crowd was pretty diverse and included many age groups. There also were a lot of young people in the crowd and I am not sure if they were American Idol fans or not, but everyone really enjoyed it and they were one of the highlights of the festival.

They are just a great rock and roll/pop band. And the production you hear on the studio recording still comes through with the live performance.

It was a great show. I've been to every Carolina show he's had However, wasn't too pleased with the event staff thereafter when waiting for a chance to meet him. Kept moving us. Barricaded us. Acted if though we were being disorderly. It was inky 7 to 10 people. Then moved us again. But failed to mention he wasn't going to come out. Waited an HR and a half in 29 degree weather. kinda figured when they cranked up the buses,it was official. As a result, I am sick. Felt it was unprofessional of Daughter to meet the few fans that cared enough to do so. Although not a total loss. Met drummer and one of the guitarist in which were extremely nice and appreciative.

Daughtry at the legendary Ryman Auditorium was fantastic! It was a great mixture of all albums (though, I could have stayed another hour to hear more favorites)! The opening act, Bobby Church, was a pleasant surprise and got the crowd on their feet. Daughtry's band is as charismatic as he is and it's a full group effort. Chris even made my 4 year old feel special by shaking her hand and patting her head. He took the time to make the audience feel a part of the show. This was Daughtry's and my 3rd Nashville show and it won't be my last - hope they'll come back!

Didn't know it was an acoustic show. Only 3 of 6 members were there. He sounded good but we were let down because we were expecting the full band to put on a regular show not an acoustic show. Not necessarily bad for Daughtry I think it's bad for the marketing and advertising of the show. They should advertise it as Daughtry acoustic tour, intimate evening, etc.

Daughtry rocked the Hollywood Amphitheater in St. Louis, and boy was it a hot one!! The Sun was roasting poor Chris but he just kept cranking out the energy. At one point he said he would like to take his sunglasses off but "God's Spotlight" wouldn't let him!! I just love his beautiful soul and if I ever get a chance to see him again I definitely will!!

What an awesome show at the Rocksino. Seats were great and the show was perfect. Love the sit down and improve provided by Daughtry and his two other band members. You can tell he is a perfectionist on making sure his show sounds perfect. Can't wait for the next album. I will definitely go to see him the next time he is in town.

Great show. Sound was a little muffled. He played his old favorites and the new ones were very good. He engaged the audience quite a bit. He is very energetic and his voice is awesome. The light show was good. We enjoyed the show very much. Definitely will see him again.

Concert was awesome. Chris had the audience involved at multiple parts of the show. He included music from all parts of the bands career from current back to 2006. Daughtry as a band puts on an awesome show would definitely pay to go and see a show by them on many occasions.

CONCERT REVIEW: DAUGHTRY Brings Back Nostalgia to Michigan (March 6th, 2022)

chris daughtry acoustic tour

First to kick off this wonderful night was a three-piece band from Rochester, New York; called Lyell . Before they began playing, they announced that their song “I’m Somebody Else” would be featured in an upcoming movie called Bad Habits . This track is an anthem for those who doubt themselves, it is all about breaking free. Promptly after performing the song; which is also their newest EP, Lyell introduced her band members and let the drummer take over the crowd attention with a commanding drum solo. Following the astounding demonstration of musicianship, Lyell introduced one of her very first songs called “Potions”, she talked about how she sent the song to Chris Daughtry in 2020 for advice, not thinking anything would come from it, and he responded with nothing but encouraging words and now look she was opening for his band. She finished her set with a song called “Erasers” which is set to come out in two weeks. Listening to the influential lyrics of their songs, Lyell ’s music is all about empowering every person who listens to their music.

LYELL Photos

chris daughtry acoustic tour

While Lyell stage setup was removed, The Royal Oak Music Theater played a variety of nostalgic songs; including the Linkin’ Park iconic track “In the End.” As soon as the audience heard the first few notes of the song, the entire venue was filled with a crowd singing along; everyone enjoying themselves and cheering the return of live music.

Up next was the powerful four-piece band led by Alter Bridge ’s guitarist Mark Tremonti , whose music definitely carries a much more metallic edge. During the middle of their set, the two guitarists engaged in a solo showdown; while the bassist pounded on his bass along to the drum beat. Front-man and lead guitarist, Mark Tremonti , has a very unique vibrato to his singing; especially during the longer notes, something I personally have not seen much of in hard rock. Tremonti riled up the crowd and kept them on their toes while they waited for Daughtry . I highly recommend seeing these guys live, it is an experience you do not want to miss.

TREMONTI Photos

chris daughtry acoustic tour

The stage was blanketed in dark cloud, above the stage was a neon sign that said “Dearly Beloved” but kept blinking randomly until it flashed and was finally readable, just as Daughtry took to the stage. The lights strobed for what seemed like forever until they changed to purple revealing the entire band and the crowd screamed loud enough to be heard outside. Halfway through their set, the entire band walked off stage except the drummer, and the drummer had a blast taking over the set for a bit, the drum solo quickly developed into the beat of “Evil”; the lights turned from purple to a stunning light show of red with highlights of blues and whites to emphasize the powerful emotions in this song.

As Chris Daughtry introduced the next song, the whole band left the stage as he picked up an acoustic guitar. As he tuned the guitar, he joked about how he is always recognized in public and the fans always say “I am your biggest fan, I really love that one song you do;” that one song being “Home”. He politely asked for the lights to be fully dimmed and told the audience to pull out their cellphones and turn on their flashlights to light up the stage. When the audience hesitated, Chris improvised a song about how it is 2022 and everyone has a cell phone and that he was not going to continue until everyone had their flashes out. As soon as the venue was full of flash lights from the audience, Chris began to play “Home”. After the brief acoustic performance the rest of the band came back on stage, the lights darkened and Chris announced that this next track, “Heavy Is The Crown”, was dedicated to Ukraine and those affected by everything happening over there. The stage lit up in a blue and yellow hue with the overhead neon sign showing a golden crown. As he sang, you could feel the pain, the sorrow, and many other emotions vibrating around; by the time the song finished nearly the whole audience was emotional and crying.

Finally came the time everyone dreaded, the band finished their set and walked off stage,  the crowd started chanting “Daughtry” at the top of their lungs, praying for an encore; which Daughtry happily obliged. The lights dimmed to a low faded blue that slowly illuminated the stage, all while the crowd screamed their heads off knowing there was more to come. This encore consisted of “Over You” and “Asylum”; if you have been a Daughtry fan for a long time you know that “Over You” is a classic, everyone in the audience belted out the lyrics, feeling very nostalgic. This is a tour that you do not want to miss, it makes you feel like a kid again, like there is not a worry in the world.

"It was one of those that I felt needed some time to simmer," Daughtry told host Chuck Armstrong on Friday night (March 22) about "Pieces." "It kind of came quick but there were things that just weren't sitting right with the arrangement, and you know, sometimes these things really benefit from taking time away."

Daughtry explained when he circled back on it following his band's last tour, he knew exactly what the song needed.

"I kind of just played it on an acoustic guitar on my phone and sent it to my producer," he said. He admitted that this new addition would make the song longer, but he didn't care.

"Sometimes we get bogged down by the minutiae of the rules of songwriting," Daughtry admitted. "I kind of stopped subscribing to that and was like, the song has to speak and let that dictate where it ends, how it ends up."

The Losses That Inspired Daughtry's New Song, "Pieces"

Letting the song breathe and not forcing it into any typical formula proved the right moves for Daughtry because as Chuck told him during their conversation, this might just be the best song he's ever released.

Not only because of the music and the arrangements but because of what the lyrics represent.

"I went through quite a bit, losing my mom and then losing my daughter a week later back in 2021," he said. "It did a number on me and I think this song really deals with the things that those kinds of events in your life bring up in you."

As he dealt with the significant losses in his life, he also had to deal with, eventually, getting back to a somewhat "normal existence," as he put it.

"I don't think I'll ever be the same as I was before those events and I'm okay with that," Daughtry said.

"I think that's kind of what this is about — we all go through [or] we're going to go through something that really shakes us and really rocks our world and shatters our reality. We can either let that destroy us or we can learn how to live with what's left."

Is Daughtry Releasing a New Record?

With "Artificial" and now "Pieces" out in the world, the question fans want to know is, what are these songs pointing to?

When "Artificial" came out, Daughtry told Loudwire Nights about a potential new album , "We're about halfway through the record as far as the writing is concerned, but we still have quite a bit to go with the recording."

On Friday night, Daughtry continued to tease a potential new LP from him and his band.

"We're still working very, very, very diligently on this record," he revealed. "I've got half the record finished and I've got the third quarter of it written."

Daughtry told Chuck that they have several songs written, but as "Artificial" and "Pieces" came together, he had to push some of those others out of the way.

"You're going, 'These are okay,' but they're not what ["Artificial" and "Pieces"] are, which made us go, 'We need to write more of these ,' you know what I mean?"

Ultimately, though, Daughtry tempered expectations for when fans might get their hands on the new album.

"We still got quite a bit of work to do to finish this record — but we at least have half of it done."

What Else Did Chris Daughtry Discuss on Loudwire Nights ?

  • What it's like writing while he's on the road: "If I don't push the pressure on me to write something, something magical could happen. But if I'm like, 'We're gonna finish writing this record when we get on tour,' it's gonna feel so contrived and lifeless."
  • What it means to him for fans to connect with a song like "Pieces" that is so personal to him: "It gave me some level of comfort, knowing that someone else is going to be able to hear their story in this."
  • Why he's excited to play the Summer of '99 Cruise with Creed

DAUGHTRY DEBUTS EPIC VISUAL FOR NEW SINGLE

Cities Crumble and Fire Rains as Frontman Chris Daughtry Faces an AI Clone in the Band’s Cinematic Music Video for “ Artificial “

NASHVILLE, TN  (August 24, 2023) — Rock outfit  Daughtry  fights for the heart and soul lost to an AI-run world in the epic visual for their new single, “ Artificial ,” out today on all platforms.

WATCH THE “ARTIFICIAL” MUSIC VIDEO HERE

Releasing their  first original material in over two years,  the new  Big Machine Records  signees usher in a fresh sonic era as frontman  Chris Daughtry  faces down a cyborg clone against a backdrop of crumbling cities and raining fire. Their most ambitious project to date, the cinematic music video spins a cautionary tale about the dangers of a planet overrun by artificial intelligence, a narrative that feels even more timely as artist unions fight for fair pay and protections from AI interference.

“‘Artificial’ is about the potential nightmare that AI could become and the idea that everything and everyone could eventually be replaced, essentially to perfection, and rendered obsolete,” Daughtry explains. “However, the heart and soul of humanity and the ability to feel love, sadness, and compassion can never be replaced. While there are plenty of applications where AI can improve our lives and assist in many areas of creativity, I feel it’s imperative that we find a way to protect our musicians, actors, writers, and all creative outlets from being destroyed. “I am so incredibly proud of this video,” Daughtry continues. “Everyone worked so hard to see this vision come to life, and it is easily my favorite thing I’ve done in my career.”

The release follows the launch of Daughtry’s  Bare Bones Tour , plotting a rare acoustic run with  26 new US dates  running throughout the fall. Alongside  Billboard chart-topping  rocker  Ayron Jones , who is set to open on select stops, the upcoming performances mark a unique opportunity to highlight the stars’ powerhouse musical versatility and vocal prowess in the most intimate of settings.

Chicago’s lee loughnane on the band’s new concert film and their debut album turning 55.

The rock band Chicago: front (L-R) Lee Loughnane, Robert Lamm, James Pankow; back (L-R) Neil Donell, ... [+] Eric Baines, Ramon Yslas, Tony Obrohta, Ray Herrmann, Loren Gold, Walfredo Reyes Jr.

In November of last year, the veteran rock band Chicago performed a special show at Atlantic City’s Ocean Casino Resort that featured guest appearances by Steve Vai, Robert Randolph, Chris Daughtry, Judith Hill, VoicePlay, Robin Thicke and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. For Chicago trumpeter and original member Lee Loughnane, the show marked a rare occasion of the band collaborating with multiple artists onstage.

“It was great to work with all the guest artists,” he says recently. “We don't have anybody sit in with us on a normal basis. And maybe if we do, it's like one person or something like that. But to have seven was challenging and very interesting to work with each one, and see how they brought their expertise to work with us and how they were able to give us their interpretation of our music. It was very cool watching it happen.”

The experience in Atlantic City was also filmed and is now being presented as Chicago & Friends in Concert , which will be screened in theaters this Thursday, April 18, and Sunday, April 21 (the film will be available in a variety of commercial formats in the future). A collaboration between the band, Fan Tracks, Iconic Events and Mercury Studios, Chicago & Friends in Concert features Chicago – led by co-founders Loughnane, trombonist James Pankow and keyboardist/singer Robert Lamm – playing over two hours of classic hits including “Saturday in the Park,” “25 or 6 to 4,” “Old Days, “If You Leave Me Now,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” and You’re the Inspiration.”

Loughnane felt that the special guest artists brought something new to the time-tested Chicago material as captured in the new film, which was executive produced by Decades Rock Live! series creator Barry Summers. “I think they had a great time too,” Loughnane says of the artists. “Talking to them backstage and then performing with them, you could see that they were enjoying what they were doing.”

The fallout show appears to have given fallout 4 a canon ending, goldman sachs issues stark bitcoin halving price warning.

For his appearance, Thicke sang lead on two Chicago songs, including “Call on Me” (from 1974’s Chicago VII album) that Loughnane wrote. “I think he did a great job,” Loughnane says. “And interestingly enough, he's singing it in a little more falsetto, which you're not used to hearing. I think it added something different to the song that was very emotionally pleasing.”

Another highlight from the shows was the vocal group VoicePlay performing such Chicago songs as “Look Away,” “If You Leave Me Now” and “Happy Man” with the band in an semi-acoustic setting. “At various times, we do an unplugged segment ourselves on stage just to sort of break it up,” Loughnane says. “It was great to hear how they approached our songs and how we were able to blend the two bands together.”

Meanwhile, Chicago will be marking another year of summer touring as they join forces with Earth, Wind and Fire again on the Heart and Soul tour beginning July 10 in Missouri. Says Loughnane: “We can't wait for it. We're going to rehearse a couple of days with Earth, Wind and Fire, and then do about 30 shows with them. We've always played the encore at the end, where we do a half-hour’s worth of music, three of their songs and three of our songs, and everybody plays. It's really cool.”

The new film and the upcoming summer tour with EWF come as Chicago marks the 55th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album, The Chicago Transit Authority , which featured the original band lineup of Loughnane, Lamm, Pankow, guitarist Terry Kath saxophonist Walt Parazaider, drummer Danny Seraphine and bassist Peter Cetera. A good number of that album’s tracks were performed during the group’s Atlantic City appearance last year, including the deep cuts “Poem 58,” “South California Purples” and “Listen” for the first time in many years.

“We hadn't played them since we had enough hits…and people wanted to hear our current hits,” Loughnane says. “So as we amassed more hits and live performances, we weren't able to do the deeper cuts anymore because people would actually complain. Not that we weren't playing things that they would enjoy hearing, but they wanted to hear the hits even over the deeper cuts.”

Recorded in New York City with producer James William Guercio, The Chicago Transit Authority ( which was also Chicago’s original name) was an ambitious double album of jazz rock, progressive rock and pop. Upon its initial release, the record’s singles didn’t become immediate hits.

“Interestingly enough, AM radio wasn't ready for it either because when we initially released “Beginnings” and “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,” they didn't want to play it,” Loughnane recalls. “Top 40 didn't want to play it because they said we hadn't had a hit yet. So that was the excuse, the catch-22 type thing. But obviously, how are you going to have a hit if you don't play it?”

But interest in the songs from The Chicago Transit Authority was revived when the band’s second album, 1970’s Chicago (a.k.a. Chicago II ), became a success and generated hits with “Make Me Smile,” “Colour My World” and “25 or 6 to 4.” “And then we went back and re-released the songs off of the first album,” Loughnane says, “So it worked for us in retrospect.

“The thing that was the most bizarre was the way the press acted toward it,” he continues, “because they put the first album as ‘groundbreaking,’ ‘way ahead of our time’ and all of that stuff. And then when we went back and re-released the songs [from The Chicago Transit Authority ] and they became hits, the same people started saying that we had sold out because the songs were hits. We hadn't changed one note on any of those songs. I think it told us that we should concentrate on what we're doing on our music, try to keep all of the other noise away from us, and just do what we enjoy doing.”

Not only did that debut album highlight the horns and Lamm’s songwriting but it also showcased the electrifying guitar work of Kath, who died in 1978. “Terry is greatly overlooked as far as the greatest guitar players of all time in pop music. And he got overlooked because, I think, unfortunately, the horns got more notoriety than the guitar. People who listen to it now go, ‘Oh, my God. Who is this guitar player?’ And he's getting more applause for what he did. He left us way, way too soon. But finally, he's getting some recognition.”

On The Chicago Transit Authority ’s legacy, Loughnane ranks it up there alongside other Chicago albums such as II , III , VII , 16 and 17 . Coincidentally, Chicago 17 is marking a special anniversary by turning 40 this year–it remains the group’s best-selling studio album with the hits “You’re the Inspiration.” “Hard Habit to Break,” “Stay the Night” and “Along Comes a Woman.”

“It definitely [a turning point] was because David Foster came in as a producer and he focused in on the tenor voice in the band,” Loughnane says of 17 . “ And he focused in on using the horns as more of an effect than you know really doing full-on brass arrangements like we had in the past. So me, Jimmy and Walt picked up other instruments and were able to get better at other instruments during that period. It was a pretty interesting time for us, but in no way did we think we were ever going to stop playing horns. If someone was attempting to get us out of the band, we weren't going to go without a problem.”

The combined success of Chicago 16 and Chicago 17 connected the band to the MTV generation after their commercial fortunes dwindled during the late ‘70s. “ 16 and 17 became like a second wave of success for us where people saw our 16th and 17th album [and] they thought those were the first and second [Chicago] albums. They were growing up during that period. And so they would say, ‘Mom and Dad, look at this!’ And then Mom and Dad would go get the albums from I to XV and say, ‘You mean these guys?’”

As for the future, Loughnane says the band is writing new music though but has no plans at the moment to put it on an album (the group’s last studio record was 2022’s Chicago XXXVIII: Born for This Moment ). Fifty-seven years into Chicago’s existence, Loughnane could have never imagined the band would endure this long amid changing trends and lineup changes (in addition to Loughnane, Lamm and Pankow, the current band configuration features singer Neil Donell, drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr, bassist Eric Baines, guitarist Tony Obrohta, keyboardist Loren Gold, percussionist Ramon Yslas and saxophonist Ray Herrmann).

“I am ecstatic that we're still able to do this for a living, says Loughnane, adding, “I would have thought we're lucky if we get one album and maybe two. That's the way we were thinking back then. There's no way to look you know this far ahead and have any idea that you would be able to do this at this level, especially.”

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, Chicago still garners airplay and concertgoers. The group has also generated admiration from musicians of different generations as indicated by the diverse guests on Chicago & Friends in Concert . “It's very gratifying to see that they have not only respect for their music, but we have influenced their music in some way and they felt honored to be able to come and share that with us,” says Loughnane.

‘Chicago & Friends in Concert’ will be in theaters on Thursday, April 18, and Sunday, April 21. For information on venues and showtimes, visit chicagoandfriendsintheatres.com .

Huge fire engulfs shopping centre in Moscow suburb

At least one person dies in blaze raging through Mega Khimki shopping centre.

Russian firefighters battling blaza

Russian firefighters have put out a massive blaze that engulfed one of the largest shopping centres in a suburb of the capital, Moscow, leading to the collapse of part of the structure and one death.

The fire early on Friday spread over an area of about 7,000 square metres (75,000 square feet) in the Mega Khimki shopping and entertainment centre, authorities said.

The head of the Russian emergencies ministry, Sergey Poletykin, reported that at least one person had been killed in the incident, with the fire put down at 10:45am (7:35 GMT).

More than 70 firefighters and 20 fire trucks had been sent to the site, emergency services said. The work was hampered due to the design of the building, which is located about 7km (4 miles) from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, they said.

“Due to the collapse of the roof, the fire spread instantly to a large area,” the Moscow region’s emergency services said on Telegram.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said it was looking into the cause of the fire.

The head of the Moscow region’s emergency services agency said it appeared the blaze was the result of safety regulations being violated during repair work on the building.

A worker told TASS a short circuit might have caused the fire, followed by an explosion that caused the flames to spread.

Russia

Russian news agencies had earlier reported that emergency services were considering “arson” as a possible cause.

Videos on social media showed a huge fire, with people fleeing the burning building into a parking lot.

Mega Khimki had been home to a large number of Western retail chains before the companies’ departure from Russia in the wake of the Ukraine war , including one of the first IKEA stores in the Moscow area.

Russia has seen a number of deadly fires at entertainment venues in recent years.

Last month, a fire killed 13 people at a bar in the city of Kostroma. A drunk man had reportedly fired a flare gun indoors but inadequate fire safety regulations caused the large number of deaths, authorities had said.

In 2018, a fire killed 60 people in a shopping mall in the Siberian city of Kemerovo.

In 2009, another blaze at a nightclub in the Urals city of Perm killed 156 people.
