Travel Smarter! Sign up for our free newsletter.
Cycle touring isn’t just for Lycra-clad enthusiasts. Europe alone offers hundreds of accessible cycle tours aimed at the casual rider, from Mediterranean coastal roads to river-hugging bike paths.
Exploring Europe on two wheels is the best way to avoid crowds while experiencing its iconic landscapes from a new perspective. And by booking through a trusted tour company, beginners avoid the common pitfalls of planning a cycling trip abroad. Typical benefits start with bikes and equipment included, as well as pre-planned routes, luggage transfers, pre-booked hotels, and professional guides to help with all aspects of the trip.
We’ve narrowed down the very best European cycle tours for beginners, with a mix of self-guided and tour-led packages.
Editor’s Note: Although some of Europe is starting to open to (vaccinated) American tourists, other destinations on this list have travel restrictions, and should be saved for future travel. If you do go, be sure to follow all local rules and guidelines both at your destination and upon returning home.
Self-Guided Cycle Tours for Beginners
Danube Bike Path (Classic): BikeTours.com
The majestic Danube River is a virtual playground for beginner cyclists, with hundreds of miles of flat, paved cycle paths to explore. BikeTours.com’s self-guided Danube Bike Path Tour offers six days of moderate cycling along the German and Austrian stretch of the river, starting in Passau and finishing up in Vienna. Along the way you’ll explore medieval castles, drink brandy at a Trappist monastery, and take several detours through lush Bavarian forest.
Will Europe Be Open to Americans This Summer?
Loch Ness and the Highlands: Exodus Travels
Summer and early autumn is the prime cycling season in the Scottish Highlands. Exodus offers a leisurely five-day tour along the stunning Great Glen Way , taking in the entire length of Loch Ness and its lesser-known neighbor, Loch Lochy. With only a few gentle climbs involved, the route offers plenty of spectacular views without the lung-busting ascents of other Highland tours. Keen on Scots history? Make a final day stop at Cawdor Castle (home to Shakespeare’s Macbeth), and the battlefield at Culloden.
Freewheeling in Catalonia: Inntravel
From the snow-capped Pyrenes to the glistening Costa Brava, there’s no shortage of scenery in northern Catalonia. Inntravel’s scenic eight-day tour showcases this overlooked corner of Spain, sticking mainly to dedicated cycling paths ideal for beginners. Like many a great European cycle tour, you’ll pedal through hidden valleys dotted with small villages and enjoy excellent local food and wine. There’s also a free day in Girona, a historical city replete with ancient walls and Roman fortresses.
Lakes & Cities of Slovenia: Helia Travel
Slovenia packs a lot of beauty into its small borders. This five-day cycle tour by Helia Travel takes in two of the country’s must-sees—the iconic Lake Bled (with its fairytale island castle ), and the cobblestoned capital, Ljubljana. With the Slovenian Alps never far away, the panoramas are breathtaking. If you’re feeling bold, there’s a 750m climb to the Jelovica high plateau—or catch a lift for 20 euros per rider.
Cycling in the Algarve: Responsible Travel
A fresh Algarve breeze eases you along this east-to-west tour of southern Portugal . The seven-day route offers flexibility—choose from shorter or longer distances each day, from 30km to 50km. The Algarve is known as the Portuguese Riviera, so expect reliably good weather and outstanding local seafood. Tour organizers Responsible Travel suggest skipping August, as peak summer temperatures can be too hot for comfortable cycling.
Fully-Guided Group Cycle Tours for Beginners
Normandy Cycle Tour: Trek Travel
World War II buffs will enjoy this six-day cycling trip by Trek Travel , featuring three of Normandy’s most important D-Day sites. The flat, picturesque landscapes of northern France are ideal for beginners and casual cyclists—and you’ll be led by two experienced guides with a support van in tow. Tour highlights include a picnic and apple cider tasting at a traditional cider estate (Normandy is famous for the stuff), and a private guided tour of Omaha Beach by a local historian.
Bike Safety Tips: How to Stay Safe and Comfortable While Riding
Puglia’s Undiscovered Coast: VBT
The “heel” of Italy’s boot, Puglia offers exceptional riding for beginner cyclists. VTB’s easygoing seven-day guided tour sticks to quiet country roads, where you’ll pedal past olive groves, beaches, and stone-sculpted seaside towns. Out of the saddle, there’s an afternoon of olive oil tasting, plus several farm-fresh meals prepared by local hosts. Although very little climbing is involved, e-Bikes are available on request.
Champagne Cycle Tour: Duvine
Into indulgence? Duvine’s four-day tour of France’s Champagne country serves up calories galore as you pedal from one illustrious Champagne house to the next. The riding is easy (provided you haven’t eaten too much), and Duvine’s tour guides are bilingual in French and English. Starting at the UNESCO-listed town of Reims, you’ll finish up at the village of Hautvillers, where Dom Perignon first discovered how to make champagne. Michelin-starred food options include wild game, waffles, and boeuf carbonnade .
Baltic Sea Ocean Cruise Bike Tour: Backroads
This scenic tour of the Baltic Sea squeezes five countries into eight days (Denmark, Estonia, Russia, Finland, and Sweden). If that sounds daunting, think again—most of the distance is spent sailing on a small luxury ship. Back on the saddle, there’s time to explore two of the world’s most bike-friendly cities, Copenhagen and Helsinki. You’ll also cover dozens of miles along the flat Baltic coastline, plus an afternoon detour to St. Petersburg’s Pushkin Palace, home to Catherine the Great. Backroads offers several bicycle models , including a tandem bike for couples who just can’t be separated.

5 Easy cycling routes in Europe – Cycling Holidays for Beginners
Are you a cycling newbie who wants to start bicycle touring and is looking for easy routes without massive climbs and many cars? I’ve got you covered! In this article, I have described 5 easy routes around Europe – all of them beginner-friendly, with good infrastructure and easy to navigate.
I chose designated routes as it’s easier to navigate, although I personally rarely stick to them over a longer time. I believe they are a perfect choice for a newbie bike tourer. It’s also easier to find fellow cyclists, something you might appreciate as a beginner. It gives you a wonderful sense of community and allows you to meet people with the same passion, and provides some additional security if you run into issues with your bike.
There is plenty of easy cycling routes in Europe and this list is by no means an extensive one!
I chose mostly routes following rivers or the coast since they have a flatter topography. Some of them, like the Elbe Cycling Route or The Flanders Route, partially lead through hilly areas but won’t require big climbs.
As a beginner, you might get overwhelmed by just looking at the length of some of these routes. The goal doesn’t need to be to cover the whole distance. You can pick a specific section or take public transportation on some stretches.
There are also countless options for editing these routes. Using apps like Komoot , you can look for deviations if you decide not to follow the designated trail religiously.
If you need advice on navigation apps for bicycle touring, read this article.
Danube Cycle Path
The Danube Cycle Path stretches from Germany to Romania. However, most cyclists decide to cycle the stretch from Vienna to Budapest. This unique route allows you to visit three European capitals within less than a week.
This is probably the number one bicycle route among the not-so-experienced and not-so-adventurous bicycle tourers. At first, I thought it might be too easy and boring, as I usually crave more raw adventures. I was wrong: with the blue waters of the Danube, historic towns and plenty of cyclists, the Danube Bicycle Path is an exciting ride, accessible for beginners.
Country: Austria, Slovakia and Hungary
Elevation: flat (on average 294m/100 km or 1562 ft/100 miles)
Length: 339 km / 210 miles
Traffic: mostly designated bicycle lanes, some small roads with little traffic
Road quality: very good
Trains/public transportation: this route is quite short so even as a beginner, you should be able to cover it all by bike but if needed, you will be able to catch a train along the route.
Signage: Great. Just look for the EV6 signs, and you won’t get lost!
Highlights: Vienna, Bratislava, Dunajske Luhy protected area , the Danube Bend, ferry in Vác, Visegrad, Budapest.
Velo Baltica
I lived in Gdańsk for almost 8 years, and the routes along the Baltic Sea used to be my favourite weekend getaway with my bike. Breathing in the aroma of the cluster pine and listening to the sound of the waves has a truly therapeutic effect on your mind and soul.
Although the cycling infrastructure is supposedly better in Germany and Denmark, I decided to describe the Polish part of Velo Baltica simply out of personal sentiment.
My route goes from Gdańsk to Świnoujście, but you can extend it to Rostock or even to Copenhagen, as it continues flat all the way to Denmark).
Country: Poland
Elevation: flat (on average 254 m/100 km or 1343 ft / 100 miles)
Length: 427 km / 265 miles
Traffic: very little
Road quality: decent, but there are some stretches around Leba where you might heavily struggle through sandy trails.
Alternative: take a detour to Hel for charming lighthouses, seals, and gorgeous beaches.
Trains/public transportation: It’s very easy to take a train with your bike between Gdańsk and Lębork (you can check the timetable on the SKM Trójmiasto website ). Further west, there are fewer connections
GPS file: You can download the GPS file from EuroVelo’s official website . Most of the route is fully developed and marked, but some parts are still under development, so the GPS might be useful.
Highlights: the old town and Solidarity Center in Gdańsk , the dunes in Słowiński National Park , Sopot, Kołobrzeg, Świnoujście and the Wolin Island .
Flanders Route
Cycling is deeply woven into the culture and traditions of Belgium. The cobbled roads of the Tour of Flanders attract thousands of road cyclists from all over Europe. With its impressive network of cycle paths, cute historical towns and quiet forests, Flanders is also a perfect place for rookie bicycle tourers.
Country: Belgium
Elevation: slightly hilly (on average 479 m/100 km or 2665 ft / 100 miles).
Length: 949 km / 560 miles
Traffic: Most of the route is on designated bicycle lanes and only sometimes small roads with little traffic.
Road quality: Very good.
Alternatives: There are endless options to edit the route, with an incredible network of cycling routes in Flanders. It’s absolutely worth taking a detour to cycle through the water or through the trees .
Trains/public transportation: It’s easy to take your bike on a train in Belgium , and there are frequent connections between cities. A bike supplement costs 4 euros.
Highlights: the famous Flemish cities Gent, Antwerp and Bruges; the beach in Oostende; the Town Hall and the beetle on the Needle in Leuven; Hoge Kempen National Park , and the bike paths through the Apple orchards in Limburg.
Elbe Cycling Route
Following the Elbe river from the mountains, through Prague, Dresden, Magdeburg, and Hamburg, all the way to the North Sea in Cuxhaven, the Elbe Cycling Route is one of Europe’s most various and scenic bicycle routes.
While almost 1300 kilometres sound overwhelming for a beginner cyclist, you can pick one section of the route depending on your preferences. If you appreciate the mountainous landscape, choose the part from Spindleruv Mlyn (it’s still mostly flat, don’t worry! ). The northern part of the Elbe Cycling Route will be perfect for those who like the sea, the Hanseatic cities and the lowlands.
Country: Czech Republic / Germany
Elevation: flat (281 m/100 km or 1547 ft / 100 miles)
Length: 1197 km / 744 miles
Traffic: Very little. More than half of the route runs on designated bicycle lanes or paths.
Road quality: Good. Mostly asphalt, some gravel and dirt.
Trains/public transportation: Taking a bicycle on a train in Germany and in Czechia is relatively easy so you won’t have problems skipping a part of the route. Be aware that some intercity trains don’t take bikes on board.
Signage: Good
Highlights: Krkonose National Park , the rocky landscape of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland , the old town of Prague , Dresden , and the port city of Hamburg .
The Dutch Coast
Each corner of the Netherlands is a paradise for cycling, no matter where you go. Forget those narrow, bumpy cycle lanes that make no sense which we know in most of the world. Here, the cyclist is king, and the infrastructure makes biking convenient, fast and safe.
If the main reason you didn’t venture to go on your first bicycle tour yet was the fear of cycling among cars, the Netherlands should be your first destination.
There are endless options for great cycling routes in the Netherlands, but my favourite one is the coast route, with picturesque dunes and lovely sandy beaches.
You can easily edit this route if you want to see the great Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Utrecht (probably the best cycling city in the world!). In the Netherlands, you never have to worry about the bicycle lanes and the safety, so it’s a perfect country to improvise, be creative and explore!
Country: the Netherlands
Elevation: flat like a pancake (on average 182 m/100 km or 960 ft / 100 miles)
Length: 621 km / 386 miles
Traffic: mostly designated bicycle lanes, some country roads with little traffic.
Road quality: very good/perfect for a road bike
Trains/public transportation: it’s easy to take your bike on a train in the Netherlands
Signage: Great. There is also a special app with the route and practical information.
Important info: there are many ferries on this route. Always check their timetable beforehand!
Highlights: Peaceful Zeeland , cosmopolitan The Hague, Haarlem (sometimes called the little Amsterdam, but without the annoying tourists), the sand dunes near Zandvoort.

7 Best Self Guided Tours in Europe
We have cherry-picked the best easy cycling routes in Europe and the UK for you. These easy cycling routes offer a variety of flat cycle paths, plenty of fascinating villages and towns to stop in and virtually traffic-free roads.
Whether you’re a novice cyclist, haven’t ridden a bike for years or just don’t want to work up too much of a sweat, these easy cycling routes are perfect for you. We’ve factored in plenty of time for a mid-morning coffee, leisurely lunches, wine tasting and for you to admire the region’s renowned sights. Read on for the best flat cycle routes in Europe and the UK.
1. Loire, France
The Loire Valley in France is home to some of the best easy cycling routes in Europe and is our favourite choice for a flat cycling holiday. Pedal at your own pace along the Loire and Vienne rivers to incredible châteaux and vineyards that produce delicious white wines. After learning about the grapes and their production, taste the cool, crisp wine on the terrace.
Our Loire cycling holidays can be spent at a luxurious single centre hotel, so you can really get to know the area. Or, make your own way on a self-guided cycling tour. We transport your bags to the next hotel, so you can take your time weaving between towns and châteaux. Want to see more of the region? Our e-bike holidays help you to travel for longer and see much more, thanks to the power-assisted boost. The Loire is a great option if you are looking for flat cycle routes, suitable for the whole family.
2. South Tyrol, Italy
Filled with plenty of easy cycling routes and flat cycle paths, we’re delighted to add this stunning region to our cycling holidays in Italy. It’s a spectacular area, and the well-maintained cycle routes are predominantly downhill. As you pootle down through the Adige valley, a tail wind behind you will make pedalling even easier. Stop at the Caldaro vineyards for a wine tasting, followed by lunch of the local risotto all’Amarone that is made with the local red wine.
Arriving into the glamorous Lake Garda, spend some time wandering around this chic Italian lakeside town. Popular with celebrities and Italy’s elite, unwind by the shores and indulge in the thermal baths. Or, you can continue to romantic Verona. Both options are equally as appealing in our opinion!
3. Provence, France
France’s cycling heartland, it caters for all types of cyclists. The leisurely cyclists that want to take their time between the countless sights and stunning vistas. Foodies that want to satisfy their hunger, starting with aioli garni and tapenade made from local olives and followed up with a tasty ratatouille or a bowl of fresh mussels. Wine enthusiasts are well catered for too, with the reputable Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Mazan vineyards nearby. The only problem you may encounter is which wine to choose.
If you tick all those boxes, why not extend a week-long trip and travel through the region by e-bike. You won’t even notice the extra juice from the bike or how the miles are flying by as you immerse yourself in this beautiful Mediterranean region in France.
4. Tuscany, Italy
Although Tuscany is inherently hilly, your e-bike is your savoir! Making pedalling a joy, the power-assisted boost will make you feel as though any hill is conquerable. As you engage the boost, the three settings will give a varying amount of power. This allows you to pedal for longer and cover more distances as well as giving you a helping hand on the ascents.
Roll into the walled hilltop towns with an air of class and ease, saving your energy for visiting the countless impressive landmarks. With all the miles you will have covered, the delicious Tuscan cuisine and famed Chianti wine awaits you at the end of the day. Unwind in character-filled hotels or an agriturismo, before dining alfresco and discussing your newfound love for e-bikes with your travel companions!
5. Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux’s renowned name (and wine) really speaks for itself. The city and its surrounds offer some of the best wine in the world, whether it’s the right or left bank, you can’t go thirsty. Arriving into the city, pick up your bikes and pedal around the bike-friendly city. Thanks to its wide boulevards, river-side paths and patient drivers, you’d be surprised you’re in the heart of the fourth largest French city.
One of the best easy cycling routes in Europe is along the coast from classy Arcachon to Europe’s largest dune. Pedalling through the fragrant pine forests and along the pretty coast, you will have a refreshing breeze. Park your bike at the foot of Dune du Pilat and climb the steps for incredible views over the Atlantic.
6. Cotswolds, UK
The Cotswolds has some of the best flat cycling holidays in the UK. The beautiful English countryside is considered a bit of a hidden gem amongst cyclists who want an easy route. You will meander through low traffic country lanes, wandering streams and lovely quaint villages. In addition, there are fantastic local pubs along the way to visit on your ride.
It’s a fantastic destination to admire the wide-open spaces of greenery and take in some fresh air away from the city life. At each stop, you can explore local farm shops and cute tearooms. It’s the perfect place to unwind with the best wine, boutique spa accommodation and gourmet dining. One of the most relaxing rides you can book.
7. Sussex, UK
If you want a great flat cycling holiday in the UK, look no further than Sussex. It is packed full of fantastic cycling that includes the 100 mile South Downs way bike ride and the Cuckoo Trail. Along the routes are mainly flat cycle paths with incredible scenery. The South Downs cycle paths in particular are wide-open, not crowded and well marked.
You can admire the amazing Seven Sisters from the delightful seafront. This classic British rural area has fantastic beaches and seaside towns to visit during your stay. In addition, there are excellent vineyards that produce some of the best wine in the UK. The sparkling white in particular is making waves across the world and rivalling the iconic Champagne variety.
8. Catalonia, Spain
In the northeast of Spain, you’ll find the vibrant region of Catalonia. Filled with fantastic sights, wonderful food and an exciting culture, this region is also home to some of the best easy cycling routes in Europe. Cycle along abandoned railway tracks repurposed into cycling paths and named the vias verdes, or ‘green-ways’. Fantastically leisurely, these make cycling a breeze in Catalonia.
On our tour, Catalonia from Mountains to Sea, you’ll start in the rural interior of the region where the Pyrenees create the most breathtaking backdrop to your adventure. Heading towards the coast, you’ll also visit Girona where delicious food and gorgeous architecture await you. Ending in Palamos, enjoy the blissful Mediterranean Sea and all the wonderful seafood it brings.
9. Champagne, France
For leisurely cycling and indulgent wines, the Champagne region in France is one of our favourite places to visit. Home to some of the best easy cycling routes in Europe, our Vineyards of Champagne tour is almost pancake-flat as it follows gentle canals and leisurely lanes. Stop off in grand and ancient towns like Reims and Epernay, where a tour and tasting at a Champagne House is all but compulsory.
Known for its sparkling white wine, there are countless winemakers in this region, each producing delicious and unique Champagne. We highly recommend always trying a local bottle when you’re at dinner, as this will pair best with your meal.
10. Alsace, France
In a region of multicoloured towns, canal cities, and verdant vines, you can also find some of our favourite easy cycling routes in Europe. We are of course talking about the beautiful French region of Alsace. Found in the east of the country, this is where the delicious Riesling wine is made. So famous is the winemaking in Alsace, that a pilgrimage called the Route du Vin was made. Incidentally, this is also the name of our cycling tour, as it follows this route and stops off at the most important wine towns.
On our tour, cycle past the lush vineyards where ancient castles overlook the vines, and explore the colourful towns and villages with their half-timbered buildings. Some of our favourite places to cycle to are Colmar and Strasbourg, where you can find these beautiful homes.

Bikepacking Europe: The Ultimate Guide From Long-Distance to Short Cycle Touring Routes
Last Updated on 29 September 2023 by Cycloscope
Cycle touring across, bikepacking through, or easy bike holidays in Europe? Here’s the ultimate guide for cycling in Europe! Routes, advice, & itineraries for each country.
Cycle touring Europe is a big topic, easy bike holidays as well as adventurous bikepacking expeditions are picking up at a fast pace in Europe, but so is long-distance or medium-term bike travel.
The European Union has tried to promote cycling vacation by establishing a network of cross-europe bike routes called Eurovelo.
The Eurovelo website though, doesn’t really constitute a complete guide about cycling in Europe, and we can tell from first hand experience that sticking to the Eurovelo routes might result boring and dull for many.
The aim of this article is to gather all our guides about cycling in the European countries in one single directory.
It’s hard to say what the best bike routes in Europe are, as there’s no best. It all depends what kind of bicycle touring experience you have and you want.
Through this guide you can start planning any kind of bike trip in Europe, from Expert to Beginner; once you have your destinations in mind, dive deep into the specific guides and advice articles that you’ll find linked.
We’ll constantly expand this article with first hand information from our own experiences or those of our collaborators. So check in every now and then and see what’s new.

Bikepacking in Europe: what you need to know
Although not a proper continent Europe is a vast and diverse landmass, cradle of cultures that dominated the world (often cruelly) for many centuries.
27 of 44 countries adhere to the European Union, but they are still very different from each other in terms of culture, geography, climate, and prices.
Southern Europe is where most of the highest mountain ranges are to be found, while most of the East and Central Europe consists of vast plains and rare hills.
The North is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world and its low population density and generalized “right to roam” make it ideal for the real adventure seekers.
Looking for a travel bike? Check all our reviews here!
Easy Cycling Holidays Destinations in Europe
If you’re looking for something relaxing, that can be done in safety by the whole family, you should look for countries with few hills and lots of cycling infrastructures, our recommendations are:
- The Netherlands
- Upper Danube River and Surroundings (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary)
Long Distance/Bikepacking Cycle Routes Across Europe
Of course the option are limitless when it comes to choose a long-distance cycle route through Europe. Eurovelo already offers quite a few option that, when combined end edited according to anyone’s taste, can become much more spicy than when followed blindly.
Spend time planning your route as it’s part of the fun. Research the territories you want to cross and their point of interests, this collection of guides will help you do that.
Don’t forget to always remain open to improvisation and variations of your route, don’t always stick yo a plan… sometimes go with the flow.
Here we present 2 route ideas which are a modified version of our two long distance bike trips through Europe (2014/2018).
The tracks here are to be taken as a rough guideline, check each country’s guide for more detailed routes.
The Great North
This is an epic trip that most people can do without too much training. The whole route has surprisingly few climbs, the biggest challenge is presented by the unpredictable and harsh Norwegian weather .
If you don’t want to freeze your ass, timing is also an important consideration for this itinerary. The whole length of this proposed itinerary requires at least 2 months also for the most experienced riders (unless you’re up for an endurance challenge). Three months is a more realistic timing that will allow for appropriate rest days.
The South and the East
Although shorter than the previous one, this route is much more challenging. Long mountain climbs and poor infrastructures make this a tour for intermediate/experiences bike tourers. Which doesn’t mean you can’t try it as your first tour, of course…
Instead of the shortest way to get from A to B, in this zig-zagging route we invite you to explore the challenges of the Appennini and the Balkans. This is really just an outline, the embryo of a route – research is and personalise it according to your tastes.

Costs of a Cycling Trip in Europe
If you have a long term cycle touring experience, you know that a bike trip costs as much as you want it to cost.
You can certainly travel across Europe with very little money, see our budgeting advice here, I you can adapt and leave your comfort zone.
At the same time, if you want to splurge in food and accommodation , sky’s the limit to how much you can end up spending.
By way, average costs of a cycling holiday in Europe greatly vary by country, so refer to the specific guides for costs calculations.
Cheapest Counties for Bicycle Touring in Europe
N.B. Georgia is not part of this guide yet, but we wrote a lot about it and it’s one of our all-time favourite bikepacking paradises, check all our articles here .
European Countries with Right to Roam – Where it’s legal to Free Camp
Average Campsite Costs in Europe
- Norway – 10/15€ x Tent
- Finland – 15/30 x Tent
- Baltic Republics – 5/10 x Tent
- Ireland – 10/15€ x Tent
- The Netherlands – 20/30€ X Tent
- Poland -10/15€ x Tent
- Slovakia – Very Rare
Cycling Routes of Northern Europe
With their low population density and pristine wilderness, Scandinavian countries are great cycling destinations for nature lovers.
If Finland and Sweden are bushcamp paradises but lack a bit in variety, Norway is probably one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
Belgium, Holland and Danmark have the best infrastructures for family cycling holidays, but might be boring for the adventure seekers.
The British Isles five their best in the Highlands of Scotland and the Wild Atlantic Way of Ireland. Cornwall is another gorgeous cycling holiday destination.
Iceland is on a league of its own, with its lunar artic landscapes that require a bit of experience to be tackled.
Here are our 5 favourite bikepacking destinations in the North of Europe
1. Norway: best wilderness cycling in Europe
Norway is the ultimate European destination for all kinds of cyclists. Expert bicycle travelers, road cyclists, avid mountain-bikers, all of you will face the embarrassment of choice when starting to plan your bicycle trip in Norway.
Norway has certainly all it takes to make even a short cycling holiday into a trip of the lifetime , but of course reserves its best for those who are willing to accept all the challenges it offers, and they are many, and fierce, and rewarding.
Easy Cycling Routes in Norway
The Great North of Norway has some of the most scenic roads in the world – these routes are mostly flat and easy to ride for cyclists of all levels.
The weather though is never friendly in Norway, so be ready for long rains, strong winds, and chilly nights.
- Atlantic Ocean Road
Intermediate Cycling Routes in Norway
Those are some iconic climbs of Norway, beautifully scenic and not too hard.
The Rallarvagen especially, is among our top 3 bike rides ever.
- Rallarvagen
- Trollstigen
- Southern Coast
Best long distance route in Norway
For those up to the weather challenge, cycling the whole coast of Norway will make for a trip of a lifetime. We guarantee marvel at every turn.
- Eurovelo 1 – Atlantic Coast Route
All of these routes are detailed in our free guide Cycling in Norway
2. Finland: Gravel Cycling Holidays
Finland is a sparsely populated country, the forest covers 72.5% of its area , dirt roads and tracks cut deep in the remoteness of these woods, making this country an ideal cycling destination for those looking to get lost in nature while having fun on gravel roads .
Finland can be a very easy destination for those who want to tackle a bike trip, naturally only if faced in the hottest season.
First of all, Finland is flat , all of it, so you can grind many kilometers a day without too much effort, considering you do not get a headwind. The only hills are found in the North, near the Norwegian border is the Mount Halti, 1,324 meters high, the tallest peak in Finland.
Cycling Finland in winter is, of course, a totally different matter. You will need to be more physically and technically prepared to face the harsh and long nights of the north.
Finland’s silence and wilderness will get deep into you, the uniqueness of the Lapland tundra has metaphysical powers over those with the right state of mind… don’t expect though a great variety of landscapes, cycling in Finland is more of a meditative trip, and to some it can be boring.
Easy Cycling Routes in Finland
- Aaland Islands
- Saimaa & the region of a Thousand Lakes
Intermediate & long distance bike routes in Finland
- The Iron Curtain Cycle Route EV13
All these routes are detailed in our free guide Cycling in Finland
3. The Baltic: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania
The Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania – are small enough to be visited on a single trip. They are safe and easy to ride even with kids.
Estonia is a small flat country, an ideal first destination for bike touring beginners , for a family cycling holiday or just to spend a few days/weeks relaxing without the need for any particular physical training.
In recent years, Estonia is attracting more and more tourists, both for its nature and for the beautiful medieval cities, but also for what remains of the period of Soviet occupation.
If you are specifically interested in military heritage, the best option is to travel in Latvia. Here you will find one of the calmest parts of the trail, with easily located points of interest from Soviet Union times . Below, you can find some tips and recommendations for your perfect experience of traveling in Latvia.
EV13 follows the Latvian seacoast . Aside from Latvia’s capital, Riga, which is included in the route, the areas are sparsely populated but not forgotten.
Lithuania is the smallest and maybe less interesting of the three (only when it comes to cycling), but Vilnius and the Hill of Crosses are worth adding to your itinerary if you have time.
Check our articles > How to organize a bike-camping trip in Estonia > Cycling in Latvia on the Eurovelo 13
Easy bike routes in the Baltics
- Tallinn – Rummo – Haapsalu
- Tallinn – Sadam Submarine Base
- Riga – Jurmala
Long distance bike routes in the Balitic
- EV 13 – Iron Curtain Trail
The Iron Curtain Trail starts in Finland and goes all the way down through Poland . A very convenient ferry connection from Helsinki to Tallinn also doubles as a funny highlight.
4. The Netherlands: family cycling heaven of Europe
Holland is the cycling country par excellence, with thousands of kilometers of dedicated cycling paths. The Netherlands is actually the place where our Cycloscope project started , the Dutch bike culture literally changed our lives.
The Netherlands are perfect for a family cycling holiday with kids, flat and friendly. For expert cyclists thought, the excitement might lack a bit.
Besides the cute countryside, it’s of course worth spending a couple of days in Amsterdam and at least one in Utrecht, one of the most beautiful cities in Holland , the bike will be your best friend also in exploring the cities
Best Cycle Routes in the Netherlands
- Amsterdam – Uitdam – Monnickendam [25km]
- Haarlem – Den Helder [80km]
From Den Helder, you can continue on the Breezandijk , the longest dam in the world, where strong winds may favour you or make you sweat.
From there there’s plenty of routes where to get lost among the hundreds characteristic tiny villages.
We haven’t wrote a full article guide about the Netherlands yet, you can refer to https://www.hollandcyclingroutes.com/ , a really valuable resource.
5. Ireland: Bikepacking the Edges of Europe
One of the best-known routes in Ireland, for cyclists and non-cyclists, is the western part of the coast to the south of the island which includes the famous Cliff of Moher and the Ring of Kerry .
Part of the very long (2500km) Wild Atlantic Way , which includes the whole northern and western coast, meanders along jagged cliffs, alien landscapes, and beautiful beaches.
Several people had warned us about the narrow streets and the traffic, especially in the summer.
And in fact, both things are true: narrow and poorly paved roads and many tourists with rental cars and campers make Ireland not exactly a destination for cyclists beginners or families .
But even in Ireland, it is possible to cycle on alternative routes – choosing the right roads will free you from the cars. Poor asphalt instead you will never get rid of.
(not exactly) Easy Cycle Routes in Ireland
- Ring of Connemara
- Doolin and Cliffs of Mother
- Ring of Kerry

1. Poland – Great Long-Distance Bike Holidays for Everyone
Poland may not seem to be amongst the most popular tourist destinations, but over the years it is surfing on an increasing hype .
The country’s investments in tourism are attracting a different type of travelers, those looking for cycling holidays are getting more and more interested.
Poland has been building cycling infrastructures for years, many international EuroVelo routes pass through the country, while the totally-Polish GreenVelo crosses the nation from north to south.
Poland is a rather large country, with stunning well-preserved and dynamic cities, many UNESCO World Heritage sites , and then the beauty of the Baltic Sea to the north and the Carpathians to the South.

2. Slovakia: bikepacking through the Carpathians
Slovakia is an underrated bike trip destination , bicycle touring beginners often opt for flatter and more popular places, expert adventure cyclist mostly overlook such a tiny country ending up crossing it at speed in a few days on their European Continent bicycle adventure.
But Slovakia can make for a really astounding cycling destination, the highest Carpathian peaks, the great Danube , and an interesting historical heritage are enough to keep you entertained for 7/10 days .
The westernmost section of the Carpathian Arc makes half of the country, with the bare and magnificent High Tatra mountains acting as a northern natural border with Poland, here the highest peaks of Carpathians are found. Slightly south is the smaller and forest-covered chain of the Low Tatras , offering a lot of cycling opportunities for those looking for tough climbs .
Each season has its own beauty in Slovakia, but cycling here in Autumn is a pure show. The colors are amongst the most vivid we’ve ever seen, competing (and winning, IMHO) with the marvels of the Japanese mountains .

3. Austria: quintessential Europe cycling trip
Austria is really a gem of a country, not just for its mesmerising alpine landscapes, but also for its great food, gorgeous architectural heritage , and very friendly people.
Osturňa – a Guide to a Hidden Gem of the Carpathians
Although the north doesn’t offer much in term of landscapes, it still makes for one of the most popular bike holiday rides in Europe, the Danube River Cycling Path. Which is always an easy and entertaining solution for beginners.
The best bike rides in Austria though, are without a doubt in the alpine range.
There are some of the toughest climbs you can ever ride in Europe in this beautiful mountains, great challenges also for pro cyclists .
Passing through the Alps anyway, doesn’t necessarily require to be the fittest cyclist. There are a few routes that are perfectly suitable for intermediate riders .
Beautiful valley roads, which involve some climb but can easily managed by almost anyone.

The country has been announced the world’s first green destination and Europe’s most sustainable country .
Slovenia is very safe and the cycling trails are very well maintained and marked. There are also special Information centers that offer bike maps, individual cycling tracks, and bike tour guides.
Besides that, Slovenia is still a much more affordable country compared to the others who share the Alps, it’s also a gourmet paradise.

Best Bicycle Touring Destinations in Southern Europe
Although we ourselves are southern European, or maybe exactly because of that, we haven’t cycled much around the Mediterranean countries .
We promise to expand this section of our guide as soon as possible, either with the help of other cycle travelers (maybe you?) or going there ourselves.
For now, we’ll only mention our home country.
Update ! check also Cycling Northern Spain – bikepacking route and GPX track Bikepacking Andalusia and the Southern Coast of Spain
1. Cycling in Italy
Ah Italy… Love and pain, our home but not anymore. Cycle touring has been for us a way to escape Italy, that’s why we didn’t ride so much of it – but we traveled it thoroughly by other means and we can assert it really is the most beautifully variegated countries in Europe.
3000+ km of coastline topped by the highest alpine peaks, Italy is a landscape of wonders – and we are not even mentioning the food and the architectural heritage .
There’s such a variety of choices when it comes to cycling in Italy, we absolutely recommend our friend’s website Lifeintravel , which is the Bible for cycling holiday routes in Italy.
2 Underrated Cycling Destinations in Italy
- Sardinia Although this article of ours describes a car road trip around the beautiful island of Sardinia, the itinerary featured is just perfect for a two-week bike ride. Check it out!
- Alpe Adria Cycle Trail A beautiful cycling path connecting Italy and Austra across Alpine valleys. Although the Austrian section requires quite some stamina, the Italian section is very suitable for beginners – enjoying the alpine peaks without too much effort.
5 Bicycle Touring Destinations in the Balkans
Although proper cycling infrastructures are lacking in the Balkans, this area of Eastern Europe is probably our favourite .
The Balkans are full of beautiful landscapes, inhabited by the friendliest kind of Europeans, and still very cheap.
The tough climbs and sometimes challenging road conditions make the Balkans one the best cycling destinations in Europe for experienced cyclists.
1. Bikepacking the Croatia Coastline
The long coastline of Croatia is a popular cycle touring route. It is indeed a very scenic bike trip.
Part of this route will force you on a main highway, but there’s a mountain biking route under development.
Level: intermediate
Update! We’ve wrote a full guide about this: Cycling Croatia: the ultimate bikepacking routes
2. Trans-balkanic bike route
If you’re up for serious mountain climbs, amazing villages, and thoughtful experiences , a trip across former Yugoslavia is one of a great kind.
From the unreal paradise of Plitvice in Croatia, across the hills of Bosnia covered strawberries (and mines), the harsh peaks of Kranjska Gora in Montenegro to a final highlights in the Bay of Kotor – few bike routes in Europe are so dense.
You can really stick to secondary roads and even gravel tracks for the whole bike trip, it’s going to be beautiful but challenging.
Level: expert
3. Serbia/Romania – The Iron Gates of the Danube
Although the most popular part is the already mentioned section from Passau to Budapest, the most beautiful cycling route along the Danube is the Iron Gates gorge between Serbia and Romania.
There’s no dedicated cycling path along this section but the traffic is light and the feeling generally safe.
Level: adventurous beginners
See our cycling diary from the Iron Gate
4. The Bay of Kotor
A stunning corner of Europe which makes for one of the best cycling holidays imaginable.
Level: beginner
5. Balkan Mountains – Bulgaria
A secret mountain biking paradise, the Balkan range is covered in verdant forests and crisscrossed by single-track trails that will challenge the most skilled MTBers.
Of course bike tours on asphalt are also possible in the region, for those who like some hard slopes .
Bulgaria is also one of the cheapest countries in Europe – another vantage point.

Best for Cycle Paths
Cycle the danube from passau to vienna.
The Danube Cycle Path is one of the world's best, following the course of Europe's second-longest river from its source in Germany all the way to Romania. For most cyclists, their first taste of the path is from Passau to Vienna , a section which is flat, traffic-free and extremely well-maintained - ideal for less-confident cyclists and those who prefer a slower pace. The scenery is beautiful throughout, as you follow the river you’ll pass wooded slopes, riverside cities and traditional towns. The famous Schlögener Schlinge (Great Loop) is a highlight on your first day of cycling, and it's worth extending your stay in Vienna at the end for more time to explore the museums, palaces and coffee shops.
"This was our second cycle trip with Freedom Treks and both holidays will remain among the best ever. This trip from Passau to Vienna along the Danube was spectacularly beautiful with a blend of city, village, farmland and vineyards plus historic castles along the route - always something to enjoy. The trail itself was extremely well-marked and in great condition, and the cycling is easy for the most part. We travelled with another couple and we all agreed we would do another trip with Freedom Treks again; their communication, customer service and personal attention were wonderful." - Anne McCaw, Canada

Best for a Short Break
Escape to umbria's unspoilt countryside.
Can't commit to a full week of cycling? Spend four days in the green heart of Italy on our Umbrian Escape Bike Tour , touring through the unspoiled countryside with rolling landscapes and hilltop towns. The pilgrimage town of Assisi is a stunning place to start and end the tour, with time to explore the town’s pink marble buildings and relax on a sunny terrace with a glass of local wine, some homemade gelato or a bowl of fresh pasta.
" Perfect - a few sunny days spent in peaceful and beautiful rural Italy cycling between some amazing hilltop medieval walled towns. Assisi was buzzing (there was a festival it was a Saturday) but the other towns and villages were so quiet - it was like stepping back in time. The hotels in Spoleto and Bevagna were charming and perfectly situated in the old town with their narrow cobbled alleys and pretty squares. Everything well organised, bikes were good and routes easy enough to follow." - Vicki Nunn, UK

Best for Culture
Puglia's rich greek & roman cultural heritage.
For fans of architecture, history and food, Puglia has it all. Italy's 'heel' is a melting pot of culture, influenced by the Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Bourbons and especially the Greeks. Each town you stay in is a highlight in its own right, from Alberobello's 'trulli' houses to the rocky outcrop of Gallipoli to Lecce's Baroque churches and ancient amphitheatres. Much of the cycling follows the peninsula's coastline (known as the 'Caribbean of Italy'!) with scenic views and deliciously fresh seafood at every stop.
" Had a fantastic time in Puglia, we started with an overnight stay in Matera, which is stunning and highly recommended. The tour itself started in Alberobello with a stay in the beautiful UNESCO site in a Trulli hut. The routes were simple to follow as we headed into the countryside amongst endless olive groves with virtually no traffic at all. The first two days were rural cycling before we hit the coast and followed the stunning coastal road before ending in Lecce. Each day felt different, each evening spent exploring and dining in a new place, was excellent. If you like to explore historic towns, stay fit, eat good food, drink good wine and swim in clear waters then I would highly recommend this holiday." - John Tiffen, UK

Best for Coastal Cycling
See more of croatia's enchanting dalmatian coast.
This tour has it all, starting and finishing in historic UNESCO cities with amazing islands along the way, including the beautiful Mljet Island, the vineyards of Lastovo and Korcula, the birthplace of Marco Polo. As well as incredible natural beauty, you'll also take in the captivating culture of the region, with interesting spots to admire as you ride and guided walking tours in the cities included. We'd recommend booking extra nights before or after your tour to explore the UNESCO world heritage sites in Dubrovnik and Split.
" Our trip from Split to Dubrovnik was extraordinary, we were able to cycle through all of the beautiful coastal green hills, visit small fishing villages, meet locals and still have plenty of time to enjoy the cruising aboard the Harmonia. My husband and I loved hearing about the local history, taking evening tours through the small towns, cycling all around the lovely Dalmatian coast islands and feeling like we were able to see beyond the usual tourist spots." - Kirstin Menne, USA

Best for Families
Daily visits to parks and attractions in lake constance.
If you're looking for an easy-going tour to give your kids their first cycle touring experience, Family Lake Constance should be your first port of call. The daily rides are short with a rest day in the middle and the chance to further shorten time on the saddle with ferry rides. Children of all ages are catered to by a wide range of bike hire options including child bikes, child seats, trailers, tandems and e-cargo bikes. You'll cycle around the whole of Lake Constance, riding through Germany, Austria and Switzerland with interesting attractions to visit in each town along the way - many of which are included in the tour price! Highlights include the stilt houses at the Lake Dwelling Museum in Unteruhldingen, the family-focussed Ravensburger Spieleland theme park in Friedrichshafen and the petting zoo at the top of the cable car on Mount Pfander.
" What a truly fantastic family holiday. The organisation was spot on from the moment we arrived at the first hotel until the day we left. We are a family of 5 with 3 boys (13,11 & 9) and had never done anything like this before. In no way are we cyclists but we loved every minute. It was great to head out each morning on a new mini adventure knowing we were going somewhere we'd never been. Everywhere we went was perfectly set up for cycling with dedicated cycle tracks over the vast majority of the trip and exceptionally well signed paths. Even though the trip is self-guided we barely took a wrong turn. This meant we felt really safe which is a huge thing when you have children. Overall, I couldn't recommend this holiday more for a family adventure!" - David Rollin, UK

Best for Variety
Slovenia's mountains, lakes, coastlines and cities.
This is a tour that has it all - cycling southwards from Bled on the edge of the Julian Alps near the Austrian border to the pretty Venetian harbour of Piran near the Croatian border, the scenery is ever-changing. Rugged mountain backdrops and glistening lakes give way to karst landscapes with underground caves and waterfalls before you reach the pretty beaches of the Adriatic coast. As well as enjoying beautiful natural sights, you'll also visit the country's capital city, Ljubljana. Crowned European Best Destination 2022, you'll have time to explore the pretty bridges, the imposing hilltop castle and the expansive Tivoli Park.
"We really enjoyed this cycling holiday as it had a variety of scenery and experiences. We booked this route as we wanted to cover as many of the main sights in Slovenia that could be covered on a cycling route on our first visit to this lovely country. The local people are friendly and each day was different - from exploring the capital Ljubljana, mountains and lakes, caves, to the coast. A great way to explore a new part of the world!" - Justine Patterson, UK

Best for Bragging Rights
Up-and-coming albania is still an undiscovered gem.
Awarded "Best in Travel 2023" by Lonely Planet, we don't expect Albania to retain its 'hidden gem' status for long. So if you're the type of traveller who likes to say they've seen the sights before everyone else, our Highlights of Albania tour is a great way to see as much of this amazing country as possible. Starting and finishing in the buzzing capital city of Tirana, you'll cycle south past picturesque mountains and sparkling rivers down the eastern border of the country before following the coastline back up in the west. It's a tour of cultural hot spots and unique wildlife, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a national park that's home to wolves, eagles and more. The cycling is more challenging than our average tour but the climbs and distances are more than worth it and you'll have a support vehicle on hand if you need it.
"Highlights of Albania: totally superb tour with excellent food and accommodation. Friendly and safe with a great international crowd and really experienced guides and support. This is the best Freedom Treks tour I've done (I've done about 4). If you love landscapes, go to Albania now, before everyone discovers it!" - Jeanette Martin, UK

Best for Ticking Off Countries
Six countries in two weeks along the danube.
Of our many tours that follow the Danube River, our 6 Countries Boat & Bike tour is the one to do if you want to tick off as much as possible, cycling and cruising from Passau in Germany to the Iron Gates gorge on the Serbia / Romania border and back in two weeks. There are far too many highlights to mention here, but with rest days in Budapest, Belgrade, the Iron Gates National Park and Vienna, you'll have more than enough time to get a cultural fix while the cycling in between will take you to parts of the Danube lesser-visited. However, we must warn you that there are only three departure dates for this tour so book quickly to secure your spot on the sundeck!
"An excellent tour - it felt good at the time and left us with a continuing lighthearted glow. The cruise, the rides and special tours, the food and accommodation were all excellent and managed with understanding and wit by a virtuoso cruise director. The travelling along the Danube was, of course, the centrepiece and lived up to its reputation. The special rest-day tour guides were well chosen and, together with the bike routes themselves, gave glimpses of their countries beyond the usual brochure view. All in all a very good and lasting experience." - Reg Phillips, UK

Best for Year-Round Cycling
12 months of warm temperatures in madeira.
Nobody wants their tour spoiled by rotten weather, so if you're looking to travel from late autumn to early spring, it pays to head to more southern climates. The sub-tropical Portuguese island of Madeira is ideal for an off-season adventure, with temperatures reaching up to 20ºC even in December (as Andy found out first-hand last year!). On our Madeira Bike Tour , you'll spend 7 nights exploring the best that the island has to offer, with mostly coastal cycling past historic landmarks, welcoming towns and tempting beaches. The self-guided tour involves a few long ascents, including a stunning cycle to Europe’s highest cape, so it's better suited to regular and experienced cyclists with a good level of fitness - although the steepest and longest climbs are softened with transfers.
" Lots of Madeira covered in the trip on mainly quiet roads. Beautiful scenery. Distances manageable given the hills. An interesting wonderful island to visit." - Brenda Herbert, UK

Best for Getting Away from It All
Wildlife spotting in spain’s remote extremadura region.
Spain might be the UK's favourite country to visit, but that doesn't mean there aren't still new parts to discover outside of the tourist hot spots. The Extremadura region in western Spain is one of them - an area of historic buildings and monuments left behind by Conquistadors and quiet countryside populated by unique wildlife. You'll stay in 'paradors', luxury hotels in restored palaces, castles and monasteries, as you cycle between beautiful cities that you're unlikely to have heard of. This is a tour where bringing a pair of binoculars or a zoom lens for your camera is highly recommended. Local fauna includes wild bulls, black Iberico pigs, Spanish Ibex and then a real highlight of vultures, eagles and hawks on day four in Monfrague National Park.
"This trip is a combination of luxury awesome places to stay and amazing countryside in a backwater of Spain that is much less travelled. We only met 6 English people all week! We were blown away by the national park which you ride through on day 4. Amazing landscape and if you like watching eagles, vultures, hawks its one for you. underplayed in the blurb. Take binoculars even if you are not a twitcher like me." - Gaius Jones, UK

France cycling routes
London to paris cycle route.
- Distance: London, England and Paris, France
- Start/finish: 470 kilometres
- Surface: Road and greenways
The London to Paris bike ride is an iconic ride – one of the true epic bike rides of Europe. There are many different ways to ride this route, but one of the best-known is the Avenue Verte. Beginning in London, it takes in the sights as you head south towards the coast, where a ferry shuttles you across the Channel. From there, you ride through quiet towns into the bustling capital of France, Paris.
Although you can use a road bike on this route, we’d recommend fitting some wide tyres to deal with the greenways, as you may encounter some gravel. You can also do this route in reverse, for the Paris to London bike ride. While not the longest, it’s still one of the best cycle touring routes Europe can offer.

Veloscenic cycle route
- Distance: 450 kilometres
- Start/finish: Paris, France and Mont St-Michel, France
The Veloscenic cycle route is one of the best cycling routes in France, with its easy riding and long stretches of greenways. Arguably it is one of the best easy cycling routes in Europe.
It’s perfect for those looking to see the sights often missed on other French cycling routes, including the Eiffel Tower and the Bay of the Mont St-Michel.
The route is ideal for laid-back family cycling holidays in Europe. It’s well signposted and has plenty of accommodation along the route called Accueil Vélo. In English, this means ‘cyclists welcome’. If you’re keen on finding good cycling routes in France for all abilities, then the Veloscenic route is certainly one to read up on. If you want the best flat cycle routes in Europe, this is one to consider – it’s not completely flat, but it’s very gentle.

Route des Grandes Alpes
- Distance: 710 kilometers
- Start/finish: Geneva, Switzerland to Nice, France
- Surface: Road
The Route des Grandes Alpes is a really tough route and certainly earns its position on our list of the best cycle routes in Europe.
Beginning in Geneva, before heading south to Nice, riders take in the panoramic views of some of the most famous cycling routes (and climbs) in the world.
Over 18 mountain passes and a leg-straining 17,000 metres of climbing, this is not a route for the faint-hearted.
There are tour companies who specialise in taking the hassle out of these trips so you can focus on riding the best long distance bicycle routes and soaking in the glorious alpine views.
It’s a brilliant chance to tick off some of those bucket list cols you might not otherwise get the chance to ride, and really put your climbing legs to the test. But don’t forget to bring some extra gearing! You can’t tackle the best bicycle routes in Europe without being properly prepared, after all.

Trans Pyrenees
- Distance: 1,100 kilometres
- Start/finish: Llançà, Spain and San Sebastian, Spain
The Trans Pyrenees is one of the most well-known and best cycling routes Europe has to offer. If you want epic bike rides in Europe, look no further!
Most people create a route from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean coast and ride it as a supported or self-supported ride. The statistics above are based on the route described in our article on the Trans Pyrenees ( here ).
Lost Dot, the same company that runs the Transcontinental race, also runs an event in the region. Riders are given checkpoints and parcours to ride rather than a set route. This gives riders the freedom to test their navigation and route plotting skills on top of the already massive challenge in front of them.
These great long distance cycling routes in Europe are fantastic challenges for hardcore cyclists who want to experience bikepacking and being self-sufficient on the bike across some of the prettiest (and most challenging) landscapes on the continent.
Find out more about the Trans Pyrenees here .
If you want something to remind you of your Trans Pyrenees, check out these maps .

Belgium and Netherlands cycling routes
Flanders cycle loop, belgium.
- Distance: 952 kilometres
- Start/finish: Nieuwpoort, Belgium (circular)
Belgium is steeped in cycling history and provides some of the best cycling Europe has to offer. The country is home to professional heroes such as Eddy Merckx and Lotte Kopecky, and also some of the toughest cobbled climbs and harshest terrain there is.
The Flanders cycle loop takes in a long loop of Belgium, exploring each corner of Flanders. It’s 952 kilometres long and has 5,155 metres of climbing on offer. The key thing about this route is enjoying your surroundings.
Belgium offers some of the best bike rides in Europe, and this route demonstrates why – taking in some of the picturesque towns and cities and undulating routes around the Flanders region. The country is also great for flatter Europe bike routes, but this route shows there are still plenty of climbing challenges available, too.
Our article on planning a cycling holiday in Belgium and our guide to cycling Flanders should be useful.
Zuider Zee route, Netherlands
- Distance: 440 kilometres
- Start/finish: Enkhuizen, Netherlands (circular)
- Surface: Road and cycle paths
One of the most popular Europe cycling routes is the Zuiderzee (otherwise known as the Ijsselmeer Tour) in the Netherlands. It traverses around the Ijsselmeer lake, which was created after the closing of the south sea (Zuiderzee) by a dam. The dam is part of the route and is 37 kilometres long!
The Netherlands is well known for its bike-friendly culture. The Zuiderzee route combines their official cycle routes, LF21, LF22 and LF23 to create one of the best long-distance cycle routes Europe has to offer. It is quite flat and is great for beginners if you don’t want to ride the full route.
Spain and Portugal cycling routes
Camino de santiago cycle route, spain.
- Distance: 930 kilometres (based on the most popular route, known as the ‘French Way’)
- Start/finish: Orreaga-Roncesvalles, Spain and Santiago de Compostela
- Surface: Road and gravel
Cycling the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of Saint James as it’s also known, is a less traditional way of approaching this pilgrimage. Typically, hikers adorn the trails, but we think cycling is a much more time-efficient and enjoyable way to do it.
There are five main Camino de Santiago cycling routes to choose from, all varying in starting place and thus length. But, whichever one you choose, you’ll be riding one of the most historic cycle routes Europe has to offer.
To get your Compostela, or your accreditation to certify you have completed the Camino de Santiago by bike, you need to ride at least 200km of this long distance cycle route.
Given that the terrain is split between gravel and road, the best bike for the Camino de Santiago is either a wide tyre gravel/touring bike or a lightweight mountain bike. With proper preparation and choosing the right time of year, this is easily one of the best cycle trips in Europe.
Read our in-depth guide to planning a bike tour on the Camino de Santiago and this article sharing our Camino de Santiago FAQs.

N2 road, Portugal

Beginning in Chaves in the North, riders travel 739-kilometres south over undulating terrain and through stunning scenery to reach Faro.
While many people immediately look further east when planning their Europe bicycle routes, don’t overlook Portugal, which is home to some of the best bike trails in Europe overall.

Italy and Slovenia cycling routes
Via francigena cycle route, italy.
- Distance: 1,030 kilometres
- Start/finish: Great Saint Bernardo Pass, Switzerland and Roma, Italy
- Surface: Road and unpaved
The Via Francigena bike route is steeped in history and is one of the best known long distance cycling routes in Italy.
It begins on the Swiss-Italian border and travels south towards Rome, taking in both asphalt and off-road terrain. Following the route is relatively simple, with the places to cycle carefully mapped throughout Italy with blue and white signs.
There are a few ways to tackle this route, including one of the EuroVelo routes. It’s recognised under the EuroVelo route 5 banner and begins in Canterbury, England, before heading across Europe to Rome. It is based on a historic 3,000-kilometre journey taken by Sigeric the Serious to meet the Pope in 990AD and has resulted in one of the best long distance cycle routes Europe offers.
Find out how you can take on the Via Francigena in our guide here .
Tour of Slovenia’s Julian Alps
- Distance: 324 kilometres
- Start/finish: Neblo, Slovenia and Bohinjska Bistrica
The Julian Alps are some of Slovenia’s best-kept secrets. On this loop, you’ll ride 324 kilometres of challenging terrain and beautiful scenery.
The Tour of the Julian Alps is one of many Slovenia cycling routes that provide jaw-dropping views. It may not be the longest distance, but the rewarding landscapes make it one of the best bike routes Europe has tucked away – a true hidden gem.

Multi-country European cycling routes
EuroVelo cycling routes are an indispensable resource for finding biking routes in Europe; they have worked over many years to create a dense network of routes for cycling across Europe.
One of the great things about the EuroVelo cycling routes is that they are well signposted and easily followed to help ensure you have a successful trip cycling through Europe.
Atlantic-Black Sea cycle route
- Distance: 4,450 kilometres
- Start/finish: Nantes, France and Constanța, Romania
The Atlantic-Black Sea cycle route, EuroVelo 6, is among the most scenic cycling routes Europe has.
It travels from western France all the way across Europe to the city of Constanța in Romania . It takes in beautiful countryside like the Loire Valley in France and historic cities like Vienna and Budapest, making it one of the most popular EuroVelo routes there is.
It’s not for the faint-hearted as it’s 4,450 kilometres in length, but the reward is knowing you’ve cycled one of the best cycle routes Europe has to offer – and a contender for best EuroVelo route too.
Check out our guide to cycling the Loire Valley.
Rhine cycle route
- Distance: 1,500 kilometres
- Start/finish: Andermatt, Switzerland and Rotterdam, Netherlands
The Rhine cycle route is part of EuroVelo route 15.
Beginning in Andermatt, Switzerland, riders get to see the Rhine from ‘source to sea’ firsthand.
From Lake Toma in Switzerland, the route takes you north, along the Rhine River, through France, past Lake Constance in Germany and all the way to the Rhine Delta at the North Sea in the Netherlands. The scenic section from Koblenz to Rudesheim, along the Rhine gorge is also considered one of the best bike rides in Germany.
While it’s not quite as popular a bike route as some of the others listed here, cycling the Rhine is special as you get to travel with the water. It’s suitable for road bikes and covers a distance of 1,500 kilometres. All the while, riders take in plenty of culture and picturesque surroundings. As with other EuroVelo road biking routes, it’s well signposted and easy to follow.

Danube cycle path
- Distance: 1,200 kilometres
- Start/finish: Donaueschingen, Germany and Budapest, Hungary
- Surface: Road and cycle path
The Danube cycle path is a very popular route, with scenic riverside views and leisurely towpath riding.
Beginning in Donaueschingen, riders follow the Danube river, passing through Germany and Austria before eventually reaching the capital of Hungary, Budapest .
If you’re into your adventure cycling routes, it’s good to know that this cycle path is well-maintained and allows riders to create their own itineraries by visiting towns and places just off the route. Places where riders can stop and rent pergolas, for example, are just part of the charm.
The river continues all the way to Romania, where it becomes part of the Black Sea, but the paths past the Budapest point are not as well developed for cycling. Up to that point though, it’s one of the best bike rides Europe offers alongside one of its longest rivers.
- There’s more information on the Romanian section of the Danube in this guide to cycling Romania.

Moselle cycle route
- Distance: 512 kilometres
- Start/finish: Bussang, France and Koblenz, Germany
- Surface: Off-road but mainly well-paved cycle tracks
One of many bicycle routes in Europe that follows a river is the Moselle cycle route. It’s 512 kilometres in length and begins in the Vosges mountains in France before heading north through Germany.
The route is entirely on cycle paths which are, for the most part, well-paved. This means a hybrid or road bike with wide tyres will be more than sufficient for this trip.
The infrastructure improves significantly once you reach Metz, the industrial capital of northeastern France. There is plenty to see and do along this route, and it’s quite easy going so you won’t be too tired to head out sightseeing after your ride.

Baltic Sea Cycle/Iron Curtain Trail
- Distance: 9,214 kilometres (Baltic Sea Route) and 10,000 kilometres (Iron Curtain Trail)
- Start/finish: Turku, Finland and Kirkenes, Norway (Baltic Sea Route)/Rezovo, Bulgaria (Iron Curtain Trail)
- Surface: Cycle path and road
The Baltic Sea Cycle and Iron Curtain Trails are part of the renowned EuroVelo cycling routes, which incorporate some of the best long distance bike rides across Europe. The EuroVelo routes connect Europe by bike through a network of long distance routes and are perfect for testing the legs over multiple days.
The Baltic Sea Cycle route is referenced as EuroVelo 10, and the Iron Curtain Trail is known as EuroVelo 13. The southern section of the Baltic Sea Cycle follows the same waypoints as the Iron Curtain Trail. They both travel through Estonia, Latvia and more, following the coast of the Baltic Sea, until the routes reach Germany. From there, the Iron Curtain Trail heads south, and the Baltic Sea Cycle heads north to continue following the Baltic Sea shoreline.
Partially drawn up to remember the history of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, the European Union has supported the growth and development of these bike tour routes not only to raise awareness but to support less popular regions with tourists.
Both the Baltic Sea Cycle and the Iron Curtain Trail can be ridden either as single long distance cycle rides or as smaller chunks to cater to more abilities and time frames. They’re ideal for those who enjoy a variety of landscapes and cultural exploration on their bicycles.

6 Responses to “16 of the best European cycling routes”
good morning , i present myself an avid cyclist georges boueiz from Beirut Lebanon . we are a group of 7 avid cyclists ,that likes to have a private tour for 7 or 8 days with 6 days on the saddle . the profile that we are looking for is to climb every day between 1200 to 2000 meters of ascent with a soft day in the middle of those 6 days . we already had private tours in France , Italy , Slovenia , Croatia, Greece , Corsica , etc… .we are looking this year to ride in Spain in particular in the Spain mountains ! we consider to land in Madrid around the 20th of May 2023 .we will go more into details later on . i will appreciate your feedback in this regard thank you georges
Hi Georges, thanks for this, I have just sent you an email. Best wishes, Clare
Hello! My husband and I live in Alaska and would like to do a cycling trip in Europe. We have spent a few weeks in Switzerland years ago and loved it. We are also interested in Italy – Dolomites and Tuscany rolling hills/wine country. We are currently experiencing research and decision fatigue and not sure if we should have a base hotel/bnb and shuttle to the different areas or pay the large amount for an organized tour. We aren’t sure which tour companies are reputable. We would probably prefer a self guided, with some support, type of trip. That would give us flexibility. We were looking into this October but then realized that some tours are already sold out. We do not do well in heat so Sept. would probably not work for us. Thank you so much for any direction you can give us! K
Hi there, have just dropped you an email! (Do check your spam folder if it hasn’t arrived in your inbox already…)
Just wanted to recommend the N2 route in Portugal, which 11 of us self supported riders completed 7 days ago. Chapeau for featuring the N2 here 👏
Thanks Adrian! So glad to hear you had a great time!

6 long-distance bike itineraries in Europe that promise epic adventure
Apr 11, 2023 • 4 min read
You’ll bike up and around the Alps and through three countries on the Tour du Mont Blanc © coberschneider / Getty Images
Some people like to relax on their summer vacations. Some like to stay active. And yet others seek out invigorating, adrenaline-pumping, even grueling holidays that test their endurance and deliver the ultimate in thrills.
If you’re in the last group, read on.
Adapted from Lonely Planet’s The Bikepackers’ Guide to the World , the itineraries below will test your mettle as they take you up, down and across Europe . The payoff? Sublime views, superb training and the endless pleasure of taking the road less traveled. (In this case, way less traveled.)
So gear up – and get ready for some continental-scale adventures.
1. Trans Dinarica Trail
Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Hercegovina 758 miles (1220km); challenging
The multi-use Trans Dinarica Trail was designed by local enterprises to encourage visitors to explore the Western Balkans by bicycle, and currently covers Slovenia , Croatia and Bosnia & Hercegovina . It’s a sister trail to the Via Dinarica hiking route , which extends into Albania , Kosovo and North Macedonia . The Trans Dinarica starts in Slovenia’s Soča Valley , famous for its water sports, then rolls through the foothills of the Julian Alps beside the Italian border before dipping into Croatia for a foray into the forests of Risnjak National Park . Next, it shadows the Adriatic before a transfer takes riders across the border and into Bosnia & Hercegovina, where it visits Mostar and Sarajevo .
2. Ronde van Nederland
The Netherlands 860 miles (1384km); easy
Holland’s long-distance cycling routes, known as LF routes , are an easy way of exploring this cycle-friendly nation. Most use traffic-free bike paths that are wide and well made. Some of the classic trips include the LF Kustroute along the North Sea and Wadden Sea coastlines; the popular LF Zuiderzeeroute around an inland sea and through national parks and historic towns; and the LF Vechtdalroute linking quiet Dutch villages. But put some of the LF routes together and you get this fantastic 860-mile (1384km) circuit of the Netherlands . Dunes, dykes, canals, sculptures, megaliths, polders, towns and villages feature. Completing the Ronde van Nederland earns riders a special certificate.
3. Iron Curtain Trail
Germany Distance varies; moderate
EuroVelo’s EV13 route , the Iron Curtain Trail follows that great geopolitical fissure from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea, through Norway , the Baltic nations , Poland , Germany , the Czech Republic , the Balkans, Romania , Bulgaria and beyond to Turkey . It’s not yet complete but will cover more than 6214 miles (10,000km) when finished. However, the German section is mostly signposted and ready to ride. The history of the Iron Curtain means that there are some fascinating sites to visit along these quiet roads and bike paths. But if you want to get further off the beaten track, consider the Iron Curtain Gravel Trail , a 426-mile-long (685km) trail crafted by Markus Stitz that runs from the Harz mountains to the Czech border (maps available via komoot.com ).
4. Tour du Mont Blanc
France, Switzerland & Italy 105 miles (169km); challenging
File this trip under “do now, while you can.” Climate change is causing the glaciers of the High Alps to melt, which means that the stability of these mountains is changing and, increasingly, that trails such as this loop around western Europe’s highest peak are diverted or closed due to rockfalls and other dangers. But while it’s possible, the Tour du Mont Blanc is a fantastic challenge for mountain bikers, who need only carry enough kit for three or four nights spent in refuges. Most start at Chamonix and will enter three separate countries on their ride. They’ll also cross rivers, climb several passes above 6500ft (1981m) and eat their own weight in pastries.
5. Torino-Nice Rally
Italy & France 435 miles (700km); challenging
Beginning life as an annual bikepacking rally – a noncompetitive group ride – designed by James Olsen, this gorgeous route explores some of the lesser-known Alpine regions between Turin in Italy and Nice in France , and can be ridden at any time between late June and early September when the higher parts are free from snow. Riders take a mixture of rough gravel tracks and trails, with some road diversions available if needed. Bikes are usually hardtail mountain bikes, but gravel bikes with chunky tires will also be fine. And accommodation can be in some of the mountain refugios on the route or under canvas, depending on preference. There’s a lot of ascent, obviously, so most need eight or more days if stopping to savor the views and the local food.
6. Great North Trail
UK 825 miles (1328km); challenging
Snaking north from England ’s Peak District National Park to the tip of Scotland , the Great North Trail touches on some of the UK ’s greatest cities and its wildest open spaces. This is a mountain-bike route for experienced cyclists if attempted as a single trip, but it’s easy to break it up into sections. The first leg borrows the Pennine Bridleway , which hugs the ridge of hills between Manchester and Leeds before entering the patchwork of stone walls and green fields in Yorkshire Dales National Park . The route then crosses the open moors of Northumberland National Park , and heads into the Scottish Borders at the mountain-biking hub of Peebles before visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow and taking on the real mountains of Scotland on its way to John O’Groats.
