8 Top Champagne Houses in Reims, France

Wine lovers visiting Paris often choose to take a day trip to Reims for Champagne tasting. Getting there via train from Paris is actually very easy and quick. Then you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy the bubbles at a few of the top Champagne houses in Reims.

Reims is the center of the Champagne world in France. You can visit world-famous estates in Reims and Epernay , such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger, or check out the smaller Champagne houses you may not have heard of.

All you’ll need are a few advanced appointments, your walking shoes (or a quick Uber ride), and enough time to do it justice.

Below you’ll find all you need to know about setting up and enjoying Champagne tours and tasting in Reims.

How to Visit the Champagne Region

The best way to discover the region is by driving The Champagne Trail, which covers over 250 miles that wind through rolling hills, along vineyard covered valleys and past quaint little villages. All along the way you can stop to visit the growers and winemakers, to taste Champagne, and to learn as much as you like about the tradition.

There are two main cities in the Champagne region to visit, and the Champagne trail will take you between the two within just a 30 minute drive. In Reims, you can visit world-famous Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger.

Champagne region in France

In Epernay, you can spend some time walking along the Avenue de Champagne, popping in at tasting rooms along the way. The easiest way to get to the Champagne region is by car from Paris. If you’re already visiting, you can rent a car in Paris and take a day or overnight trip to Champagne.

You can take the train from Paris to Reims, but it’s not very easy to get around to the Champagne houses without a car, and you’ll definitely need a car to visit the countryside or to go into Epernay. Below you’ll find all you need to know to plan a road trip in the Champagne region, for wine tours and tasting.

Self-Guided or Group/Private Wine Tour

The first consideration you’ll probably be making is whether you want to do a self-guided or a group/private guided wine tour. If you don’t have a designated driver, or don’t wish to spit the wine instead of drinking it, you will need to take a tour or hire a driver.

There are many to choose from. You can go on a group tour, which are plentiful, often including up to 10 people and are on a pre-planned route that you can’t decide on. Tours typically go to great wineries and there’s a lot of information given, many include lunch – plus you don’t have to take care of a single detail.

Below are two group tours we recommend:

  • Small Group Full Day Tour – Your go to three different Champagne houses, where you’ll try a variety of champagnes. There’s also an included three-course lunch along the way. (8 hours)  BOOK HERE
  • Reims Afternoon Tour to Epernay – Visit the UNESCO-listed Champagne Avenue in Epernay, the historic village of Hautvillers, and visit two Champagne houses for tastings. (4.5 hours)  BOOK HERE

Private Tour

If you don’t want to go along with a bunch of other people and you’d like to have some say in the schedule, then a private tour is the way to go. Here are two that we recommend (in case there’s not a lot of availability).

What’s Included:

  • First Visit – Explanation of the manufacturing process plus cave visit followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes.
  • Visit Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon created Champagne.
  • 3-Course Restaurant Lunch
  • 2nd & 3rd Visits – A Grand Cru cellar and cave followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes at each

Tour is 8 hours, 2 people minimum. $375/pp

What’s included:

  • Return transport from Reims in a private shuttle (Mercedes Class V).
  • English-speaking driver/guide, Champagne expert
  • Visit & tasting at 2 Champagne houses
  • Guided tour of Reims Cathedral
  • Lunch reservation (payment not included)

Tour is 7 hours, 2 people minimum $599/pp

Self-Guided Tour

I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called  Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

The House Mumm started in 1827 in the historic birthplace of the Champagne, Reims. This almost bicentenary estate opens the doors of its cellars where about 25 million bottles rest peacefully in the cellars.

The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. They were originally wine merchants based in Cologne, Germany, but expanded into France when they saw potential for the region and expansion of their business. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today Mumm is spread across nearly 25 kilometers in the heart of Reims. Visitors can explore the long history of this cellar and learn about the process they’ve followed for centuries.

There are three visit types: The Cordon Rouge Mumm experience, the discovery experience, and the 100% Grand Cru experience. The visit will end at one of the most beautiful museum about champagne. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to taste their Champagnes.

#6 Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove has been in business since 1811, and its production is 3 million bottles per year. It can be quite interesting visiting a large house like this to learn the Champagne making process. The facility was built in 2019, so it’s very modern.

You can book a tasting only, or embark on one of their three tours, which takes you to their production facility and give you an explanation of the process, along with a demonstration in their eco-museum.

The tour will be followed by a comparative tasting of 3 non-vintage Champagnes (2 whites and 1 rosé) or you can add on a vintage tasting as well.

Location: 1 Place des Droits de l’Homme, 51100 Reims, France Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm Phone:  +33 (0)3 26 89 53 90 Email: [email protected]

You’ve likely already heard of this Champagne brand, as it’s one of the most popular Champagnes being sold around the world. In case you’re thinking that means it’s not worth a visit to this Champagne house because it will be too touristy, we don’t think that’s an issue.

In fact, this was one of our favorite Champagne tours in Reims. The underground cellars of Veuve Clicquot might be one of the main reasons we love it here so much. The cellars are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

That’s not surprising when you learn that they’ve been making wine since 1772. In 1909, they bought these old underground quarrys to store their wine. There is some fascinating history in these caves, which you’ll learn all about during the tour.

After the tour of the cellar and facilities, you’ll have a chance to try the Champagne. There are a few different tickets you can purchase. Click here to see them all.

  • Discovery Tour – 26€:  45min tour followed by a single tasting of Yellow Label Brut 26€. This tour is available Tuesday to Saturday.
  • On the Footsteps of Madame Clicquot – 53€:  1 hr tour where you’ll learn all about Madame Clicquot, followed by a tasting of the Brut Yellow Label and prestige Cuvée La Grande Dame.
  • Veuve Clicquot & Rose Champagne – 40€: In 1818, Madame Clicquot was the first to make a rose champagne blend, which changed the landscape of Champagne for ever. Learn all about the Rose on this 45 min tour, followed by a tasting.

Other Champagne Houses Nearby

Not too far away from Reims, there are many more opportunities for Champagne tasting. If you’re going to be in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by a few of these:

Pressoria is the brand new sensory interpretation center for champagne wines. Housed in the walls of a former Pommery pressing center in the commune of Aÿ, the immersive tour of this emblematic cultural site will help you rediscover champagne through your five senses.

Villa Signolle

A family-run business since 1802, they offer specialist champagnes for experts and amateurs alike. They do the harvesting, handling and winemaking of all their own grapes, from one of the best terroirs in the Champagne region. Their villa is on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can taste on their terrace or in the lounge, inside a house listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Champagne Le Gallais

In 1927, Hachod Fringhian, the grandfather of Charlotte Morgain Le Gallais, obtained the Clos du Château de Boursault, which had long belonged to Madame Veuve Clicquot. Five generations later, Charlotte runs part of the estate: 7 parcels with their own characteristics, in the family vineyard, overlooking the Marne valley. The press, the cellars and the wine storehouses are also located in the clos, which guarantees a great freshness of the fruit at the time of its pressing and transformation.

How to Get from Paris to Reims

You can get to Reims from Paris by taking the TGV train. From anywhere in Paris, just get yourself to the East Railway Station. You can take the Paris subway to arrive at this station. This makes it very easy to visit Reims, no matter where in Europe you’re arriving from.

You don’t have to have tickets for the train in advance, but during busy times we do recommend buying them in advance to make sure you can get a seat. There have been times that the train has been full and we’ve had to take the next one. You can purchase tickets in advance on Trainline.com .

The train journey to Reims is only about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Epernay – another of the nearby major Champagne cities – you can continue on from Reims on the TER train, which departs every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to get there.

Descending into the Veuve Clicquot Chalk Caves

How to Get Around in Reims

One of the big questions that is often asked by tourists coming to Reims on a day trip from Paris is how to get around to the Champagne house. There are three convenient ways to get around. You can choose your method based on your own needs:

  • Walk: It’s actually quite easy to walk around Reims. The biggest hurtle is getting from the train station (or center of Reims) to the area where you find most of the Champagne houses. This is about a 2 mile walk (40 mins). If you don’t want to take this initial walk, you can take a quick Uber or taxi ride from the train station. We recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, as it’s the furthest way from town (2 miles). To walk between any of the 5 Champagne houses mentioned, it will take you about 5 minutes or less.
  • Uber or Taxi: If you can’t or don’t want to walk, you can take an uber or taxi from the train station to any of the Champagne houses. Once you’re ready to go on to the next, you can call another Uber or taxi to take you there.
  • Rent a car: There is a convenient place near the train station to rent a car for the day. In fact, it’s just a few steps outside the door to the train station. It’ll cost around 40€ to rent a car for a day. We recommend using Expedia to book your rental car .

If you’re staying overnight in Reims, you’ll quickly learn that there isn’t a huge selection of hotels. We stayed at  Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix . If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, try the  Chateau Les Crayeres .

⇒ Be sure to check out our list of the drinks you should try in France . There’s so much more to enjoy beyond the Champagne.

See the map below for directions to your Reims Champagne tours.

Once you’ve visited a few of these top Champagne tours in Reims, you’ll have a much better understanding of how Champagne is made and the history behind the industry and their unique stories.

It’s a great way to expand your knowledge of the craft and appreciate it even more than you probably already do. If you have a favorite Champagne house you want to share with our readers, leave us a comment!

Thank you so much for this perfect trip plan! Sooooo helpful 🙂

Glad you found it useful!

Thank you so much for your tips! Were there any bakeries nearby to grab a snack or light lunch between tastings? I seem to only be able to see these closer to the train yet am keen to do both Pommery & Veuve tastings (and will clearly needs some food between these!)

There are a few cheese shops and bakeries in town, but not right near the Champagne houses. I would recommend picking up some cheese, bread, pastries and taking them with you, so you don’t have to find something in between.

We’re planning an overnight in Reims next month – do you have any favorite places for dinner?

We really enjoyed L’Atelier and L’Alambic, which has a fun environment.

Are children (age 13) allowed on these tours? Thanks so much for the article! Very helpful.

Yes, they are allowed.

Do you have to book a tour or can you just show up and do a tasting? We are planning a day trip for Christmas Eve. We have a tour and tasting booked for Veuve Clicquot but wanted to be able to try one or two others without doing the tour.

For most places you need to book a tour. Not many just do tastings. However, if they do you would still likely need to make a reservation for Christmas Eve. Send them an email and ask what they offer. Veuve Clicquot is actually one that offers just tastings.

Great information, thank you for your detail! I’m planning a visit, but having trouble locating information for a tour at Laurent Perrier. Do you happen to know if they do tours?!

Hi Ashley, I think that tours may be closed to the public at this time. I couldn’t find any current tour information either.

We are considering doing some biking while visiting. Question…should we do Reims on foot one day and bike to Epernay day 2? Or, would a bike in the city be an asset or a hinderance? We wish to do lots of champagne tasting and plan on visiting both areas. We are only there two full days.

Melissa, I think a bike would be a great asset in both places. If only one day, I would bike around Reims and walk around Epernay, but you can definitely bike both. It’s about a 28-mile cycle between and easy roads.

Another nice address is Champagne Roger-Constant Lemaire, we tasted 4 our delicious champagnes and we plan to go back next year. They are situated in a village called Villers sous Châtillon between Reims and Epernay.

Fantastic! Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.

Reims is the birthplace of Champagne and is the capital of the Champagne-Ardenne region. It’s where the champagne magic happens.

And “Champagne” is highly regulated. To earn this prestigious label, the sparkling wine must be produced within a strict geographical boundary, which is just about a 100-mile radius around this region

Reims is also full of history. The Notre Dame Cathedral, for instance, has witnessed the coronation of several French kings.

And if you’re into World War I history, sites like the Fort de la Pompelle offer a sobering but important look into the past.

Taking a private tour of one of the Champagne Houses will help you experience the history for yourself by getting an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the cellars and more. So let’s get to it.

⭐️ RATING: 4.9 Stars | ⏳ TOUR LENGTH:  4 Hours | ✅ Check Rates & Availability!

Your morning tour of Reims and the Champagne region starts with some history. Enjoy a look at the Notre Dame de Reims, the Gothic cathedral where the Kings of France have been crowned, and visit the last Roman gate of Reims, “Porte de Mars”, a 2000-year-old arch.

Then it’s off to the famous House of Champagne Pommery , with a complete tour of their cellars finishing with a tasting of two different champagnes.

Learn about the process of how champagne is made, why the vines are planted on the hillsides and why the subsoil is made from pure chalk.

The tour ends with a visit to the family-run estate, where you’ll get to enjoy some rare champagnes and learn about how they maintain the old ways of processing.

Suzanne was an amazing guide! She’s a local so she had so much experience to back up her knowledge of the wineries and champagne process. She was friendly and efficient with our time! The tour itself was nice because of the differences you get to see between a small family-owned winery and one of the large champagne houses. LAURA (read more reviews )

Top Tips for Visiting Champagne Houses

Book in Advance: Many champagne houses require reservations, especially if you’re interested in a guided tour or a tasting session. Booking ahead ensures you get the date and time that suits your itinerary.

Check the Calendar: Some houses close during the harvest (vendange) or off-season. Always check the opening times and days before planning your visit.

Dress Appropriately: Cellars can be cool, even in summer, so bring an extra layer. Comfortable shoes are a must, as you might be walking on uneven surfaces or standing for long periods.

3 women wearing sunglasses and holding orange champagne glasses at the Veuve Clicquot estate. Two are wearing black and one if wearing a black and white dress

Plan Your Transportation: If you’re not part of a tour, consider how you’ll travel between houses, especially if they’re in different villages. Remember, the legal alcohol limit for driving in France is lower than in many other countries. This is one of the reasons I always opt for a tour, so I’m chauffeured around all day and can enjoy sampling what’s on offer.

Ask Questions: Don’t be shy about understanding everything there is to understand about champagne . Asking questions can lead to a deeper understanding of the craft and might even result in trying a wider variety of samples. They love it when you get involved and this is where you’ll get those great stories, such as when I found out François Taittinger was jailed by the Nazis in WW2 for being rude.

Bottles of Moet and Chandon champagne going down in size sat in front of some glass on a light coloured stone

Visit Different-Sized Houses: Try to visit a mix of large, well-known houses and smaller, family-run estates. This will give you a broader perspective on the industry and the champagne-making process. There have been a couple of times when I’ve enjoyed visiting the smaller, family-run estates more, as their passion for what they do is wonderful. Plus, personally, I think their champagne is better, and they teach you more about how to taste wine .

Explore the Towns: Take time to explore the towns where the champagne houses are located. Places like Reims and Épernay have much to offer, in terms of history, architecture, and gastronomy.

Stay at a luxury Hotel: There is no shortage of great hotels in the champagne region , and it just means you’ll be able to enjoy more than one tour. This works really well if you’re spending time in Paris as Champagne is less than an hour away.

A Quick Reminder!

Hands down my favourite champagne tour was this full-day experience in Reims . Loved being picked up from my hotel and chauffeured around. Plus, the lunch was AMAZING!

Final thoughts on the best tours of the Champagne Houses in Reims

You can’t come to France and not go to the Champagne region and sample some champagne in the place in which it’s made.

If you’re vacationing in Paris , a day trip is less than an hour in travel time.

It’s so different to popping a bottle in your back garden. There is something wonderful and very special about drinking champagne in Reims or Epernay. And I should know.

So hopefully, I’ve given you plenty of choices and helped you to narrow it down so you know which champagne tour to book.

“Best Champagne Host Ever!”

What a fantastic day!! I can recommend Gwendal very highly. We have been to many wine regions around the world and have used many guides/drivers. Gwendal is as good as it gets. He is very knowledgeable and a most courteous host. Boom him with confidence.

Phenomenal experience!

This was a top-notch, must-do experience for us! I love sparkling wine and Gwendal made this such an educational and memorable experience. Everything was fabulous, from the selection of Champagne houses to give us a lot of variety, to the phenomenal lunch at the Garden, to Gwendal’s ability to teach us all about the region and history. Wow! That’s really all I can say.

Gevondyan_H

The very best!

I can’t say enough about this tour. Gwendal, our guide was delightful! And he was so informative. We learned so much about the Cathedral and the surrounding area. He provided great background information on the two wineries, before we took the tours. And he showed us interesting points of the church where Dom Perigon is buried. I would do a tour with Gwendal again, anytime. A fabulous day! Thank you Gwendal!!

“Unforgettable champagne tour services five stars.”

We were recommended by our hotel concierge service, a full day to discover the champagne region, it was a good choice for an escape from Paris. The trip was tailor-made with our favorite champagne. Our driver-guide was amazing, five star services, I highly recommend his services.

Our customers are talking about us

This tasting was great! We went to two tasting locations. At the first, we got detailed info about the champagne making process. We then saw the abbey of Dom Perignon and got some interesting history, before then finishing at another tasting location. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the champagne making process as well as what different champagnes are meant to be used for (e.g., dessert, pre-dinner drink, with food)

Trip Advisor

I went on the trip with 5 friends to celebrate my upcoming 60th birthday. It was the most amazing day. Our host for the day was excellent and very informative. The tastings and lunch were all of very high quality. I would not hesitate to recommend this trip

We really loved the small group tour to Pommery and Fagot. The price-quality was perfect, we had around 5 glasses of champaign; so a good idea to start your day happy. Our guide knew a lot about the region, and the way she presented was flawless, humorous and confident. And very important: no boring stories, just to the point. Highly recommended!

Ultimate Champagne Tasting in Reims Guide

Visiting Champagne is always a good idea. For those who love bubbly and want to immerse themselves in the culture, history, and flavors of this delightful beverage, you know you’ve got to pay a visit to the largest city in the region: Reims. To help you plan the perfect trip, this is the ultimate Champagne tasting in Reims guide!

I recently spent 4 days exploring the ins and outs of both Epernay and Reims and can honestly say, “Wow!”

Did I feel a bit like a bubble after those 4 days? Yes, but it was honestly such a great experience to try various Champagnes ranging from large and smaller houses to everything in between.

So let’s talk about everything you need to know about Champagne tasting in Reims including the best Champagne houses to visit in Reims, best tours, fun facts, and even a sample 1-day itinerary!

Row of Veuve Clicquot

There are many ways to visit Champagne, so let’s talk about how to best explore Reims!

What is Champagne?

Champagne being poured into glasses

First things first, what is Champagne? Aside from being a wine region in France located in the Grand Est, it is a delightful sparkling wine that is made in the Champagne region.

You’ve probably heard that Champagne is only called Champagne if it is made in this region of France, and that is true. But it also has to be made using the Traditional Method or Methode Traditionelle.

This means that there is a second fermentation process, where yeast and sugar are added to the bottle with the wine and it is fermented a second time in the bottle. Then, after aging, the bottles go through riddling, which is a process where the bottles are angled down and then turned each day until the dead yeast cells (lees) settle in the neck of the bottle.

Then, through a process called disgorging, the neck is frozen and the lees are removed. And finally, sugar can be added to the wine before it is sealed again.

This process makes the lovely Champagne that we know and love today.

Can you find other sparkling wines in France made this way? Of course! Only it will be called Cremant rather than Champagne.

Fun Facts About Champagne:

Close up of champagne bottles

  • Grapes used in the production of Champagne are typically Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier
  • Vineyards have been planted in Champagne since Roman times
  • Before the Traditional Method of Champagne making became popular in Champagne, it was known as a fault for the wine to be effervescent. Later on, it became popular amongst royals and winemakers started trying to produce sparkling Champagne
  • Dom Perignon helped perfect the Champagne making process
  • Madade Cliquot invented the process of riddling to get rid of the dead yeast cells in the wine

Alright, now that you have a brief history and understanding of how Champagne is made, let’s talk about Champagne tasting in Reims specifically.

Best Champagne Houses in Reims

There are Champagne houses all over the region, with grapes coming from the 5 subregions: Montage de Reims, the Marne Valley, Cote des Blancs, Cotes de Sezanne, and Cotes des Bar.

I’ll mention a few Champagne tours you can take from Reims to other houses in the countryside, but for now, let’s talk about the best Champagne houses in Reims you can visit.

1. Maison Ruinart

4 rue des Crayères, Reims

Ruinart Champagne Bottles

If there is one Champagne house that you must visit in Reims, definitely head to Maison Ruinart . This is the oldest established Champagne house. In fact, their cellars are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The house began in 1729, and the cellars are actually located in old Roman chalk quarries. I went on this tour on my recent visit to Reims and it was epic!

First of all, the cellars were incredible and you could see old mine steps! They also have an art installation in the largest quarry. Definitely book a tour to see it during your time in Reims.

Champagne Tasting in Reims - Ruinart

They also do brunches on weekends for €80 for adults and €45 for kids under 18.

Tour Price: €75 for adults. Includes 2 tastings of their Champagne.

2. Taittinger

Residence of the Counts of Champagne, 20 rue de Tambour, 51100 Reims

The origins of this Champagne house date back to 1734, with the founder, Jacques Fourneaux, working closely with Benedictine monks to learn how to make Champagne.

In 1932, Pierre Taittinger acquired the estate and changed the name. This place also has cellars made from old Roman chalk mines, and they are one of the largest producers of Champagne.

They are not currently offering tours of the cellars, but they plan to begin the tours again in July 2024 after renovations. You can, however, go on a virtual tour of the cellars .

They do offer tastings which include 2 of their Champagnes to taste.

Tasting Price: Starts at €37 per person.

3. Veuve Cliquot

1 rue Albert Thomas, 51100 Reims

Tasting a glass of Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Cliquot is always a super recognizable bottle. That iconic yellow label can be spotted far away. So why not visit where it is made in Reims?

Not only is the bottle iconic, but we can thank the widow Madam Cliquot herself for many things about Champagne today! For starters, after her husband passed away, she took over the wine business. “Veuve” in French actually means “widow.”

She is credited with creating the first vintage Champagne where all the grapes in the bottle are from the same year versus blended with other years. She also invented the riddling table to get rid of the lees.

Learn more about her life and accomplishments, as well as visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site chalk cellars during a tour.

There are quite a few tours offered here, including the Yellow Label tour, blended rose tour, La Grande Dame tour, and more! Be sure to book a tour with a cellar visit! Each includes a tasting of their Champagne.

Tour Price: Starts at €35.

4. Champagne Pommery

5 Place du Général Gouraud, 51100 Reims

Champagne Tasting in Reims - Pommery

This is definitely a popular spot to check out, mostly because you can do a self-guided tour of the Pommery Champagne house in Reims.

Plus, this house also has a strong female history, with Madame Pommery inventing the first Brut Champagne, a drier Champagne.

With UNESCO World Heritage Site Gallo-Roman chalk cellars, it is definitely worth a visit. Learn about the wine-making process and the history of the house with a self-guided digital and audio tour. There is also a contemporary art exhibition to witness.

The tour also wraps up with a glass of Pommery Brut Royal Champagne.

And if you want to have a tasting and lunch, you could book the Gastronomic Visit where you will go on a guided tour and end at the restaurant with a food and Champagne pairing.

Tour Price: Starts at €27 for adults.

5. Champagne Pol Couronne

11 Cours Jean-Baptiste Langlet, 51100 Reims

Champagne Tasting in Reims - Pol Couronne

Located close to the famous Reims Cathedral, you can book a tasting at the boutique of Pol Couronne .

While you could certainly just do a tasting or split a bottle to enjoy either inside or outside, the best thing you can do is book the sabrage.

Sabrage is the art of opening a bottle of Champagne with a saber. This place is the only one in Reims to let you do this! We did this during our last visit and it was so much fun and easier than I thought it would be.

Oh, and after you’ve popped the Champagne you get to enjoy it.

Tasting Price: Starts at €28 for 3 tastings. The sabrage starts at €52.

6. G.H. Mumm

34 rue du Champ de Mars, 51100 Reims

Another popular Champagne house in Reims, you can schedule a visit which includes a tasting. The history of this house dates back to 1827, and you can visit their lovely cellars and have a tasting during a tour.

Their tours help you understand Champagne from the inside. Learn more about the house and wine during a tour .

Tour Price: Starts at €28.

Champagne Tasting in Reims - Ruinart tasting

7. Champagne Lanson

66 Rue de Courlancy, 51100 Reims

Another one of the oldest Champagne houses in Reims, it was founded in 1760, and their Champagnes are enjoyed in over 80 countries.

There are a few tours that you can book here , and they share their history as well as how they get their grapes all the way from the vine to the flute. This is definitely one of the best Champagne houses to visit in Reims.

Tour Price: Starts at €32.

8. Champagne GH Martel & Co

17 Rue des Créneaux, 51100 Reims

GH Martel Champagne House

This smaller Champagne house sits in the middle of the city. It also has chalk pits that date back to the Medieval period, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visits here include a visit to the cellars as well as 3 tastings of their Champagne.

Tour Price: €25.

Best Champagne Tours in Reims

Champagne Ruinart Cellar

Honestly, you could book and go to most of the Champagne houses on your own. Many are either walkable or you could take a short taxi or Uber ride. And many houses are fairly close together including Pommery, Veuve Cliquot, and Ruinart Champagne.

However, if you are short on time or want someone else to handle all the logistics, here are a few tours you can take of Reims Champagne houses.

1. Paris to Reims Champagne Tour

This tour is for those who only have time to take a day trip from Paris. Thankfully, as Paris is only about 45 minutes away via train and 1.5 hours via car, it really is fairly easy to visit here on a day trip.

This trip takes you from Paris to Reims where you’ll visit 2 Champagne houses and have tastings at each and a local restaurant or winery for a 3-course lunch.

Book it here!

2. Reims Champagne Tour

Enjoy tastings at 2 Champagne houses, Pommery and Veuve Cliquot, as well as tour their cellars during this tour of Reims. The tour also includes a 3-course lunch with a Champagne aperitif.

3. E-Bike Tour Through Champagne

Want to get out of the city and explore Champagne a little deeper? Then, definitely book this tour where you’ll see Avenue de Champagne in Eperany, explore the historical village of Hautvillers, ride through a UNESCO vineyard, enjoy a cellar visit with tastings, and have a local lunch with Champagne.

Vineyards in Hautvillers

4. Sabrage Workshop

Want to learn about the history of Sabrage and even open your own bottle of Champagne with the saber? This is a great workshop that goes into the art of sabrage.

Champagne Tasting in Reims - Sabrage

5. Private Champagne Tour From Reims

Want a private tour with your friends or family around Champagne from Reims? This is a great tour that includes stops at Hautvillers Abbey, Avenue de Champagne, a vineyard, and a winery and has plenty of tastings.

Perfect 1-Day Reims Itinerary Including the Best Champagne Houses in Reims

Reims Cathedral

If you only have a full day to explore Reims, then you better do it right! Here is a quick 1-day itinerary for Reims.

Start out the morning with a quick stop for breakfast and coffee at a bakery. You’ll need something on your stomach before a day of sipping Champagne.

Then, head to the Reims Cathedral . This is definitely a must-visit during your Reims itinerary as it is where the French kings were coronated.

This Gothic cathedral has origins dating back to the 5th Century, but the currently constructed cathedral was completed in the 14th Century.

After a visit to the Reims Cathedral, head to Champagne Ruinart for a tour of their cellars and tasting. We booked the 10:45 am tour when we went. But the earlier the tour the better, so that you can enjoy your 2 tastings and lunch today.

Bottles of Champagne Ruinart

Once you’ve wrapped up your Champagne Ruinart tour, I recommend grabbing lunch down the street at Le Refrectoire at Pommery for a lovely meal paired with a glass of their Champagne.

Then, I recommend booking the afternoon visit of Veuve Cliquot for the Yellow Label tour. Make sure you have enough time between Ruinart, lunch, and this!

After that, book a later sabrage with Pol Couronne to wrap up your time tasting in Champagne.

Once you’ve enjoyed your Champagne tastings in Reims, I recommend Brasserie Le Boulingrin for dinner and perhaps grab a glass of Dom Perignon at the rooftop bar at Restaurant Gabrielle Toit Terrasse .

Where to Stay in Reims

Hotel in Reims

I recommend spending a full day and night in Reims to get the most out of your experience here. Here is where to stay based on your budget:

Budget: VRBO

Reims can get pricey when it comes to hotels, so you can definitely check out Airbnb or VRBO for great home rentals. This rental is in the downtown area and has all the comforts of home.

Mid-Range: Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix

Located in the heart of Reims near the cathedral, this is a great place to base yourself for exploring. It also has modern rooms, a cocktail lounge, a sauna, and an indoor heated pool.

Luxury: La Caserne Chanzy Hote & Spa

This is where I stayed last time in Reims, and honestly, it was because I had Marriott points and this is a Marriott hotel. However, it was amazing! Not only did I have a room with the best view of the Reims Cathedral, but it was just a great location overall. They also have a lovely spa with a hammam, sauna, pool, and a place for a massage and other spa treatments.

Other Things to Know About Champagne Tasting in Reims

Kat and Megan with Champagne glasses

Here are a few other things to know before you go Champagne tasting in Reims:

  • Book tastings and tours in advance! It can be a bit busy, and tours and tastings fill up quickly. I recommend booking everything in advance if you can. This isn’t like other wine regions in France where you can just show up. Most tours require a reservation, and many need a reservation for tastings too. I suggest booking directly on their website, or with Champagne-booking.com .
  • How many Champagne houses can you see in a day? 2-3 is the most you really want to do in a day. You need to allocate time to get to each place, and tours can last between 1-2 hours. But, if you have lunch at one with a restaurant, like Pommery, you can sneak in a taste of their Champagne but during a meal rather than a full tour.
  • When to visit: May through October is generally the best time to visit Champagne. The weather tends to be better this time of year, and you can even witness the harvest in September. However, April was when I visited and I found it far less crowded and still lovely. Just dress warmly as it is a chillier region of France.
  • Reims Champagne tours which are best? Personally, my favorite was the OG: Champagne Ruinart. I loved the presentation of the Champagne as well as the epic cellar tour.
  • How long do you need to visit Reims? At least a full day, but I highly recommend spending a couple of days to really get to see the city sites as well as visit Champagne houses.
  • How long should you visit Champagne? I spent 4 days between Epernay and Reims and, while I felt like it was a great amount of time for both cities, I feel like another couple of days would’ve been perfect to explore the countryside.
  • How to get to Reims: You can easily get to Reims thanks to the train station. Fly into Paris and take the 45-minute train to the city. You can also rent a car and drive from Paris.
  • How to get around Reims and Champagne: You can mostly walk around Reims, but some Champagne houses can be on the other side of the city, so calling a taxi or Uber is a good idea. For visits to the countryside, you can either rent a car , go on a tour, or hire a private driver . DO NOT drink and drive! Always have a sober driver if you plan to drive yourselves.

I hope this helps you when it comes to planning your Reims itinerary and going Champagne tasting in Reims! Which Champagne house in Reims would you most like to visit?

4 thoughts on “Ultimate Champagne Tasting in Reims Guide”

Hi there very helpful blog…… do you have the correct address for Champagne Pommery? When I enter it in Google Maps it shows a location in Bordeaux! Perhaps a Google Maps glitch. Greg

Hi Greg, and thank you! There are a lot of roads that are copied in cities, so if you just type in the street address and not the city, it’ll likely take you somewhere else. If you put in the address with Reims, it should pop up.

Thank you so much for your post. It was very helpful! Thanks to your recommended timeline, we have a train booked from Paris (April 2024) to arrive at Reims at 9:15am. 10:45am appt at Ruinart and a 3pm at Lanson. We wanted to go to Pommery as well but weren’t sure we’d have time between those two appointments to do the full tour/tasting (since we also need to eat lunch) …so we took your advice to book a lunch at Pommery’s Le Réfectoire at 1pm instead since it’s nextdoor to Ruinart and then we can at least try the Pommery champagne with lunch. Question: We only have 2 hours at Pommery before our 3pm at Lanson. I was really hoping to see the Pommery cellars. They allow for a self-guided tour ticket at 2pm. Do you think 1 hour is long enough for the lunch and is 45 min enough time to walk the cellars (i’m assuming self-guided tour, we can do it on our own time). Then we’d uber to our 3pm Lanson reservation. (Unfortunately Lanson only offers 3pm tours, nothing later). Thanks so much!

Hi Beverly! Thanks so much for reading! And yes, we didn’t have time to see Pommery either so we grabbed lunch there and is was delicious! I’ll say that to be safe, I wouldn’t book the Pommery Tour ahead of time. It is self-guided, so chances are if it isn’t busy (which when I went last year it wasn’t in April but you never know) you can check it out before going to your next tasting, but in France, lunches can take up some time. That way, if you are running late and need to go straight to Lanson you aren’t out of money. But the Ruinart tour will also include a cellar visit, so you’ll get to experience the historic cellars while in Reims. I hope this helps and have fun!

For the love of fizz: the 5 best champagne houses in reims, france.

As the centre of the Champagne region, Reims is the best place to taste premium French bubbles. But which are the best Champagne houses to visit in Reims?

This is where I can help you. I spent a fabulous day sipping the best on a self-guided tour of Reims Champagne houses and am excited to share my first-hand experience.

Hit the ground running with my guide to Champagne tasting at Pommery, Taittinger, Ruinart, Veuve Clicquot and G.H. Martel.

How to Go Champagne Tasting in Reims

The labyrinth of 200 km of caves, or crayères, beneath Reims, provides the perfect environment for the second fermentation of Champagne. In 2015, UNESCO placed the crayères of Reims on the World Heritage list .

Each of the city’s Champagne houses has a slice of this prime underground real estate. These range from behemoths like Veuve Clicquot to smaller boutique houses, and each has its distinct personality.

You have three options for touring the Champagne houses of Reims: self-guided, a guided tour or a private tour.

Self-guided

As I wanted to pick which Champagne houses to visit, I went down the DIY route.

Although this takes a little planning, it is easy to do. As you can walk between the houses, you don’t have to worry about driving or figuring out transport options.

You will need to pre-book most of these tours, which you can do directly with the Champagne house or via Rue des Vignerons .

woamn in sunglasses holding a glass of champagne

Guided tour

Joining an organised Champagne tour may be for you if you want to visit Moet & Chandon in Épernay or combine more than one Champagne house in a time-efficient way. It is also useful if you wish to visit one of the small wineries in the region.

All of the arrangements are taken care of and it’s also a fabulous way to meet other travellers if you are on a solo trip.

Private tour

If you want to let someone else take over the reins but want a more curated experience that is not shared with strangers, book a private tour. This is the most expensive option but may be cost-effective if you are travelling with a few other people.

Best Champagne Houses to Visit in Reims (+ Map)

I visited these Champagne houses independently.

Four of the houses are located in the Saint Remi area of Reims , a 30-minute walk from the city centre. The houses are within a 5– 10-minute walk of each other.

If you don’t fancy walking, jump in a taxi or use Uber. I recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, making your way back to the city centre from there.

Taittinger is in the centre of Reims.

If you like to map it out, here’s one that I have prepared. For an interactive map, click here or on the image itself.

1. Champagne Pommery: Reims’ Champagne Disneyland

exterior of neo tudor blue building belonging to pommery champagne house of reims france

Pommery is not your typical Reims Champagne tour.

Its vast caves are not only used for storing fermenting Champagne bottles. They are also spaces for sound and light installations . What you lose in information about the intricacies of Champagne production, you gain in a multisensory experience.

Select the self-guided tour – the first of its kind in Reims – and you can rock up at any time during the cellars’ opening hours. This makes it super easy to shoehorn Pommery into your day of Champagne tasting in Reims.

Unlike other Champagne houses in Reims, there’s no need to book a ticket in advance. There are ticket machines in the lobby.

Download the audioguide by scanning the QR code at the information desk. An excellent printed guide is also provided.

Cellar tours at Pommery

  • Brut Royal Visit – Self-guided or guided visits of cellars. One tasting (Pommery Brut Royal)
  • From the vine to the glass – A more in-depth guided tour. One tasting (Pommery Grand Cru Royal vintage)
  • Henry Vasnier – Includes a guided or self-guided cellar tour and a visit to Villa Demoiselle. Two tastings (Pommery Brut Apanage + Diamant Brut or Pommery Brut Royal + Demoiselle Tête de Cuvée)

I recommend the Henry Vasnier tour that I did.

Villa Desmoiselle is a gem of an Art Nouveau building, commissioned by Henry Vasnier, then director of Maison Pommery, in 1906. Sipping your Champagne in the villa’s gorgeous garden after your tour is a bonus.

The Demoiselle Tête de Cuvée was also my favourite Champagne in Reims.

Address : Place General Gouraud, 51100, Reims, France

2. Taittinger: The elegant one

gateway to taittinger champagne house

When I visited Reims, the hugely informative Taittinger cellar tour was the best of the bunch. Sadly, as their main location at Place Saint Nicaiseis is currently closed, cellar tours are not available at the time of updating this post (October 2023).

As an alternative, they offer tasting experiences at Demeure des Comtes de Champagne in the centre of Reims.

Taittinger tasting experiences

  • At the table de Thibaud IV – Two tastings (Brut Réserve + Comtes de Champagne Blanc) + 25-minute audio show
  • Champagne tastings – Two tastings. Choose between L’Instant Rosé ( Brut Réserve and + Prestige Rosé) and L’ Instant Gourmet (Prélude Grands Cru +  Brut Vintage)

Address: 20 rue de Tambour, 51100 Reims, France

3. Ruinart: The Grand Old Dame of Reims Champagne houses

modern sculpture of a man

Established in 1729, Ruinart is the oldest Champagne house in Reims .

This cellar tour began and ended with the group sitting around a circular table, laid with glasses and bottles of water. It felt like going into a board meeting.

However, this was by far the most social Champagne tour, and an excellent choice if you are feeling the pangs of solo travel loneliness . Furthermore, Ingrid, our outstanding guide, asked each person a few questions by way of an icebreaker.

It was here that we learnt about the rich history of Ruinart before descending into the cellars. The whole experience lasted two hours and included tastings of vintage and non-vintage Champagne.

Although this was the most expensive of the Champagne cellar tours in Reims, it was one of the best.

Cellar tours at Ruinart

Ruinart keeps it simple and offers just one tour, which includes two tastings.

4. Veuve Clicquot: It’s all about the Widow Clicquot (and the colour yellow)

wall display of bottles of veuve clicquot champagne

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot has 24 km of crayères, the most extensive cave network in Reims and the second largest in the Champagne region. These caves double as a museum space and host an unusual installation.

The three grape varieties used in the house’s signature Yellow Label Champagne – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier – are projected onto the cave’s wall. At the same time, a hidden machine pumps out the odour of the grape, with the aroma of the Yellow Label as the grand finale.

It’s like a slightly peculiar scratch-and-sniff experience.

Although this was a slick and professional operation – iPad support in different languages was available if needed – I found it the least compelling of the Reims Champagne tours. The focus was more on the family and the formidable Mme Clicquot than on the fizzy stuff.

The cellar tour concluded with a tasting of the Yellow Label Champagne.

Cellar tours at Veuve Clicquot

  • Art of Blended Rosé Champagne – cellar tour and two tastings (Yellow Label and Rosé Non-Vintage) + charcuterie and cheese slate.
  • Only One Quality, The Finest – cellar tour and four tastings (Brut Carte Jaune, Extra Brut Extra Old, Vintage 2015 and Vintage Rosé 2015)
  • The Art of Aging – cellar tour and tastings of four vintages (Vintage Brut 2015, Vintage Brut Rosé 2015, Vintage Brut 2002 in Magnum, Cave Privée 1990) + slate of refined cheeses

Address: 1 Rue Albert Thomas, 51100 Reims, France

5. G.H. Martel: The Boutique Champagne House Experience

courtyard and building of g h martel champagne house in reims france

In the shadow of Saint Remi Basilica is one of the smaller Champagne houses in Reims . Founded in 1869, G. H. Martel is one of the younger kids on the block.

Its cool cellars also double as a museum, displaying typical Champenois tools and machinery, used for planting, maintaining the land and harvesting. The informative cellar tour lasts 60 minutes and ends with three tastings.

Cellar tours at G. H. Martel

  • Initiation – Cellar tour and 3 tastings
  • 150 years – Cellar tour and 3 tastings (2x non-vintage and 1x vintage)
  • Prestige – Cellar tour and 3 tastings (3x prestige Champagnes)

Address: 17 rue des Clenches, 51100 Reims, France

Other Cellar Tours

These are not the only cellar tours that you can do in Reims. Here are a few more to consider but they are not located in the Saint Remi area of the city.

Charles de Cazanove is a five-minute walk from Reims train station.

G.H. Mumm is a ten-minute walk northeast of Charles Cazenove and offers a number of experiences.

Finally, Lanson is southwest of the city centre

Best Champagne Tours in Reims

Here are a few tours that are highly-rated:

Champagne Day Trip with 6 Tastings

This one is for you if you want to squeeze as many tastings as possible into the day. I like that it includes two glasses of Pommery Champagne at the end of the tour.

Champagne, Épernay and Family-Run Wineries Tour

E-Bike Champagne Tasting Tour and Lunch

This tour does it all. Cycling through Champagne avenues in Épernay and the village of Hautvillers. Visiting two Champagne producers including a family-run winery. And there’s also lunch and six tastings throughout the day.

Day Trip to Épernay and Hautvillers from Paris

If you want to visit the Champagne houses from Paris and simply want someone to take care of the arrangements for you, this tour should tick a lot of the boxes. Over the course of the day, you will taste eight different types of fizz in three Champagne houses. Lunch and a masterclass in the heart of the vineyard are also included.

Reims and Champagne tasting from Paris

This ten-hour tour includes up to six tastings, lunch and a visit to Reims Cathedral.

Tips for Champagne Tasting in Reims

  • When planning your DIY cellar tour, consider how long you will need to spend in each house and the time needed to move between cellars. Also, factor in time for your tasting. You don’t want to have to knock back the bubbly.
  • Although there is a restaurant opposite Saint Remi Basilica, there are no other places to eat or buy food near the Champagne houses. The one exception is the pricey restaurant at Pommery. Pick up supplies before you head out for the day.
  • Dress appropriately. As the cellars are at a constant 12 degrees year-round, bring layers even if it is blazing hot outside. Comfortable shoes are a given.

How to Visit Reims as a Day Trip from Paris

It is very easy to get from Paris to Reims.

The non-stop TGV from Gare de L’Est reaches Reims in 45 minutes. Slower trains are also available.

Some people I talked to had also visited Épernay , another major centre of Champagne production. There are swift and easy connections between the two cities.

You can check train times and costs here .

It is even possible to visit Reims as a day trip from London . Eurostar trains arrive at Gare du Nord, less than ten minutes walk from Gare de L’Est.

Where to Stay in Reims

I stayed overnight as part of a solo holiday in France . This not only gave me a chance to visit the UNESCO-listed Reims Cathedral but the city itself is a pleasant place to spend a relaxing few days.

Mid-range – Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix

I stayed at this 4-star hotel in the heart of the city. Recommended for its comfortable rooms, extensive breakfast buffet and indoor swimming pool and sun terrace.

Here are a few other places to stay that may suit other budgets and tastes

Splurge – Domaine les Crayères

This gorgeous property is the perfect excuse to blow the holiday budget. It is in the heart of Champagne house territory, just 350 meters from Pommery.

Budget – Le Sacré, Au pied de la cathédrale

This centrally-located apartment has two bedrooms and is equipped with a washing machine.

My Favourite Champagne Houses in Reims

It was a close call but Ruinart was my favourite cellar tour. It wasn’t cheap, but the guide demonstrated a real passion for her subject and it was a welcoming and sociable environment.

Pommery was stimulating and fun and also gave me the opportunity to visit the wonderful Villa Desmoiselle. As you don’t need to book ahead, it is also a very flexible option.

But whichever Reims’ cellar tours you select, you will come away knowing a lot more about Champagne production and your preferred type of fizz. I’ll raise my glass to that.

An intimate exploration in Reims, 18 metres underground

All year round, Taittinger's interpreter-guides welcome visitors from all over the world to introduce them to the art of champagne-making by going back in time. Discover more about the history of Taittinger champagne cellars

In the 4th century, the chalk pits were patiently dug out to extract blocks of chalk. 900 years later they would become the basement of Saint-Nicaise Abbey. They were then extended by a network of tunnels linking cellars, crypts and vaults used for storing the champagne wines sold by the Benedictine monks. The Abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, but its underground structures remained intact. Owned by Maison Taittinger and used for coaxing the very best out of its most precious wines 18 metres underground, the site welcomes numerous visitors year round, who come to marvel at these stunning remnants of the Gothic style in the champagne region.

For those who don’t know, champagne comes only from Champagne. From wine tours to historic memory, people come here for its eponymous nectar, its captivating cellars, its famous dishes and simply to be swept up in its devotion to good living. This introduction to the land of champagne is much more than just a checklist, it's an introduction into the lifestyle champenoise!

Visits you cannot miss in Champagne

Parmi les visites incontournables de la Champagne : Reims, et sa cathédrale.

• Hillsides, houses and wineries classified as World Heritage by Unesco In 2015, 14 cellars, hillsides and sites were registered by UNESCO in the category "cultural landscape". This shows the universality of heritage in Champagne. It's up to you to discover the gentle hills of Hautvillers, Haÿ, Mareuil, Saint-Nicaise, or even the cellars of prestigious brands such as Pommery, Veuve-Clicquot, Ruinart, Taittinger, without forgetting the institute Fort Chabrol, wine and oenological research.

• The Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral Gothic style, it served as a showcase for the coronation of many kings of France. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, you'll love its high interior luminosity, Chagall's contemporary stained glass windows, and its smiling angel, among the 2,000 statues adorning the facade.

• Roc-la-Tour These two rock masses dominate the valley of the Semois at 400 meters above sea level and form the castle of the Devil ... According to a legend; it is the ruins of a castle destroyed by an angry Satan. Stay calm.

• The Champagne Houses They are a hundred or so to vinify their own selection of grapes and vintages, according to a demanding traditional process. Some twenty of them organize visits to cellars; Ayala to Aÿ, Mercier to Epernay, Duchêne Canard to the castle of Ludes, Taittinger in the crypts of the former Abbey St Nicaise, Ruinart in the crayers of Reims ... what makes you sparkle your eyes?

• The sites of the War of 14-18 Due to its geographical location, the Champagne-Ardenne region was the scene of many battles during the First World War. Thirty sites, cemeteries and monuments remind you of these decisive moments in history.

• The castle of Sedan It is the largest in Europe, with seven floors, 35,000 m² of floor space and walls 7 meters thick. At once a fortress and a princely residence, it overlooks the city with its impressive silhouette.

• The ramparts of Langres From the top of these ramparts, the view goes far to the Vosges and Jura! The walkway tells you 2000 years of history, with 7 doors and 12 laps to go.

• Reims No time to be bored in Reims! We give you some ideas: the Gallo-Roman remains of the Mars Gate, the Roman-Gothic St Remi basilica, the Palace of Tau, the Byzantine basilica Sainte-Clotilde, the Carnegie Art Deco library but also the modern chapel designed by the painter Japanese Foujita, the halls of Boulingrin,...

• Mont Malgré-Tout Do you want to go for a nice walk? Climb to the top of Mont Malgré-Tout (450 meters), on the heights of Revin, in the valley of the Meuse. The writer George Sand, devoted his novel Malgré-Tout to this site.

• The historic heart of Troyes The city has managed to preserve an astonishing heritage of half-timbered, brightly colored houses dating from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, inhabited by rich merchants. At the bend of the cobblestone streets, raise your nose towards the mansions of noble families.
