Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant Tour Visitor Info & Review

Chevrolet-Corvette-Plant-Tour-Entrance-Display

Welcome to the home of the Chevy Corvette!

3 out of 5 stars rating system

If you’re travelling through southern Kentucky and are looking for a unique experience, check out the Chevrolet Corvette Assembly Plant Tour in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While it’s not the best tour experience in itself, the wonder of seeing a vehicle as iconic and luxurious as the Chevy Corvette being made is worth the hour.

Address:  600 Corvette Drive, Bowling Green, Kentucky 42101

Directions:  Take exit 28 off of I-65. At the first traffic light, turn right and follow the signs back behind the assembly plant (turning left at the traffic light takes you to the Corvette Museum). Bowling Green is an hour north of Nashville and almost two hours south of Louisville.

Parking: There is ample free parking on-site for the Corvette Plant Tour. Follow the signs and park in Lots A or B. Look for the electric charging station and welcome tunnel.

Cost:  The tour costs $7 per person, but is free to GM employees/retirees, active military personnel, and their guests (with ID).

Hours:  Tours are offered most days of the year (apart from some blackout dates listed on the website) at 8:30am, 11:30am, and 2:00pm Central Time.

Reservations: Reservations are mandatory to take the tour; walk-ins are not accepted. Visit the official website to reserve a spot on a public or private tour. You will be required to provide information and pay in advance to reserve your spot.

Rules/Restrictions: Children under seven years of age are not permitted, nor are strollers. Close-toed shoes are mandatory. No electronic devices may be brought on the premises (cell phones and cameras included), nor can purses or other bags.

Handicap Accessible:  Walking assisting devices such as crutches or walkers are not permitted but on-site wheelchairs are available for those who need assistance.

Look for this welcome sign and follow the path to the tour building entrance

Experience: When you first arrive, check in at the podium by the entrance. You’ll be given a tour number and must wait in an adjacent room until your number is called. The waiting room is filled with red chairs and plays Corvette commercials on a loop. Expect to wait around 15-30 minutes and arrive an additional 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time, depending on the size of the crowd.

This walking tour of the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant is a 60-minute stroll through the inner workings of the facility that produces America’s favorite sports car. Two guides will lead you around the factory lines, stopping periodically at alcoves with a microphone and speakers to answer questions.

There’s a small on-site gift shop, but if you’re looking for memorabilia, head across the street to the Corvette Museum for a much better selection. Before you leave, there’s a pull-off picnic area where you can park, eat lunch, and take a picture in front of the welcome sign.

Total experience time: 100 minutes.

Corvette Assembly Plant Tour Review:

The first thing visitors will notice, especially if it’s a crowded day, is that the tour process doesn’t feel like it’s organized to accommodate the number of visitors it receives. The check-in desk doesn’t give directions, the wait time is long, the hallways are narrow, and the waiting area feel thrown together. Visitors will have to ask for directions when they’re given a number, since some attendees won’t explain what to do. This certainly starts the experience on a bad note, but the tour itself makes up for a poor arrival situation.

The walking tour is at a moderate pace, rarely lingering too long or moving too fast. The employees at the plant are nice–including one gentleman who handed signed Hot Wheels toy cars to children in the tour. Seeing the production process is definitely interesting. If members of your group aren’t as car-savvy as you, try this game: see if you can spot all the colors for the current model year being assembled in the plant. We saw all but two.

Unfortunately, you should already have a decent familiarity with the assembly process since the Q&A format doesn’t allow the guide to talk much about the entire assembly process. Most of the time you can’t hear anything being said and are just observing the production as it’s happening. But that’s acceptable–the reason you’re here is to watch attractive cars being made.

Give yourself plenty of time to arrive when you visit and make reservations in advance. Then enjoy your experience seeing Corvettes being built!

I will have to say, that even if you're not a Corvette or even a sports car fan, you will marvel at the assembly process. There is a long walk from the parking lot to the entrance. Even longer if you don't drive a UAW made vehicle. I only bring this up because so many don't like to walk far these days. There are some restrictions, that reading some of the comments here, seem to bother many of the visitors. Not me, leave the cellphone in the car and wear the proper shoes. No big deal to me. You are provided with safety glasses and a earphones to be able to hear the tour guide. The guide is very good....and of course the narrative is how great a Corvette is. You will not see the build from start to finish, but it is explained to you. Visitors stop at designated explanation areas, and can also ask questions. I found the tour very informative and educating....and the pacing is very good. Little kids I think would get antsy. Unfortunately, the end of the tour for my group happened at coffee break time, so was not able to see the new car drive off the lot for final testing. The whole assembly line comes to a hault. If you're visiting the Corvette Museum across the street, make the plant tour part of your experience. Well worth the visit in my opinion.

My tour guide (John C. ) did a great job giving information and interacting with the group. A tour is only as good as the tour guide and John made the tour informative and fun.

Very disappointed in the tour, you have to listen with a very low quality ear bud set that cuts out constantly so I probably only heard about 40% of what was being said although I could hear the background noises just fine. It was interesting to see the assembly process but I did see some debris here and there and thought it would be a little more professional. I would probably not do the tour again even if it was free.

If your a fan, it's a must!!! Hope we win the new corvette raffle -- positive thoughts!!

Be aware that it is not only closed toed shoes that have to be worn but that they also have to have a back on the shoe. If you have a closed toed sandal with a strap in the back they will turn you away. Totally ridiculous. They are also not ADA compliant so be aware of that when you arrive. The employees do not understand what the ADA requirements are and need training.

Photo of Brian J.

Amazing tour that shows you a lot about the process of production. We had a wonderful tour guide who explained things and was very knowledgeable. They have no concept about how to be ADA compliant however. If you are not going to follow the requirements then please don't say that you are. From the time we entered until we left it was apparent that the employees did not understand what the requirements are. The questions asked were not acceptable and the walkways in the plant are too small to accommodate a person with a disability. Please review the ADA a guidelines and make changes.

Photo of Jeff W.

The plant tour in itself was great! The process of building a Vette was interesting to watch and the tour guide did a good job of explaining each process. You will get to see Vettes from the beginning frame to driving off the assembly line. I highly recommend this tour if you're a Vette fan or just want to see the process of building this car. The negatives.... If you arrive in a rainstorm, you will possibly have to walk hundreds of yards in a downpour to get to the plant for the tour. I own a Corvette, but I was made to park my non-GM, Ford, Chrysler product, that I was driving that day, in the parking lot the furthest from the plant, even though there were parking spaces closer. This seems to be a UAW idea; Since Chrysler is now foreign owned, it can't be because of American made preference. Evidently, the UAW wants to punish those driving a non-UAW union produced car, even if they also drive one made by the UAW. Just beware of a long walk to the plant tour from the parking lot, and if possible, drive a GM, Ford or Chrysler for closer parking. (note: even though you cannot bring your phone or camera, or wear open toed shoes, you can carry an umbrella into the plant and they will hold it for you during the tour)

Photo of J David H.

If you're already touring the museum the factory is a must. However keep in mind if juggling both in one day it can be tight with coordination necessary. The tickets are obtained at the museum only and I do not recall a charge for them. However they are tightly scheduled and a list of restrictions is provided. Visitors must adhere 100% to the list in order to be permitted to tour. The distance from museum to plant is minutes. Restrictions as I recall were arrive before the time to tour, no children under 10, no electronics of any type and no open toe shoes. I'm sure there are more, the list had several items. A safety video kicks it off because believe it or not bad things could occur if your not doing as instructed. It's a lighthearted video so it will go fast. Those that love both cars and engineering will be stoked by the 2 hour tour. Our guide was fantastic as well. Think of assembling legos and you will quickly understand an auto assembly plant. The cars move on a conveyor with employees snapping, bolting and screwing parts on. Robotics are used to place larger or heavy pieces. At the end you see a fully assembled Corvette. A driver gets in the car and drives it through a series of rumble strips and turns checking out various equipment prior to a final quality control inspection. At the end there is a small gift shop with a few items you cannot find else where, so don't skip. For me this was a 5+.

Photo of James W.

Just took the tour, and it's excellent. If you have an interest in cars, it's a bucket-list kind of thing, or if you have children old enough to understand what they're looking at, this is an excellent introduction to large-scale manufacturing. As other reviewers have said, take the rules absolutely seriously...they do. There will be no exceptions for anything. You're in a modern union manufacturing facility, and they are sticklers about safety, security, and liability. Do arrive early. The tour entrance is well-marked from the outside of the facility...if you can find the plant, you'll find where you're supposed to go. One disappointment: I rolled up to a gate, to verify where I was supposed to park (it's marked, but not conclusively). The security lady told me that because the vehicle I was driving was not American-made, I'd have to park in Lot "C", the farthest from the entrance (there was plenty of parking near the entrance). In fact, she told they wouldn't even open the gate to let me turn around (I didn't ask). Now, that wasn't posted anywhere that I could see, and I pointed out to her that while it's a foreign-owned brand, it has a higher US- and North American content than what they're building in the plant (I know this to be true). Of course, it's a sop to the UAW there, but it doesn't seem like good practice to offend a potential paying customer (which I am; I'm exactly their target customer, and am considering buying the product) at the expense of a ridiculous virtue-signaling message to their union members. This left a bad taste in my mouth, on an otherwise excellent tour experience. I'm reporting this to GM; not sure if it's actually policy, or just an overzealous guard, but it's a bad look for them, and as I said, it took a little of the joy out of a visit I'd been looking forward to for years.

Photo of Mary V.

My husband and I toured the plant. We have a new C8 Corvette and wanted to see how GM constructs the corvette. I learned that the factory was so clean and the workers took great care in the work they do. We enjoyed and learned a lot. I highly recommend.

Corvette Factory Tour

By OpEx Learning Team , Last Updated July 17, 2013

I’m not really into cars, but I love learning about how cars are manufactured. The corvette is an American icon and, like you I’m sure, I’m interested in learning how the chevrolet corvette is made.

Luckily for us, if you’re not able to go to the Bowling Green Factory in Kentucky, the only factory where chevrolet corvettes are made, there’s always Youtube where you can see a video of how chevrolet makes the famous corvette.

Corvette Tour Information

The factory location is at: 600 Corvette Dr, Bowling Green KY 42101

You can schedule a tour reservation, up to 365 days in advance. If you have any questions you can contact the folks at the factory by calling (270) 745-8019 Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

You are only allowed to schedule a maximum of 75 people for the private tours. You can schedule a tour of more than 75 people, but you’ll just need to call and schedule with the folks there. Oh, there’s a small tour fee of $7 per person.

About the Corvette Factory Tour

If you are able to visit the corvette factory, here’s what you can expect to see:

Watch the fascinating assembly process of America’s favorite sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette, in a one mile walking tour. Observe as robots weld the steel structure and our dedicated workforce adds parts in Trim and Chassis. See an engineering marvel as the chassis and body come together in “marriage.” Witness the birth of new Corvettes at First Start and the thrilling drive off the end of the line. We are a handicapped accessible facility.

History of the Factory

Here are some basic statistics on the factory:

There are a total of 514 employees, 413 of which are hourly and 101 are salaried. The Local Union is UAW Local 2164. At this factory, they manufacture the following corvette models:

  • Chevrolet Corvette – Base Coupe
  • Base Convertible
  • Grand Sport Coupe
  • Grand Sport Convertible

The factory is roughly 1 Million Square Feet, located on a 212 acres. It opened in 1981. Here are a few recent investments chevrolet made in the factory:

The National Corvette Museum and Bowling Green Assembly Announce Plans for New Plant Tours

corvette plant tours in bowling green ky

BOWLING GREEN, KY, September 1, 2022  – The National Corvette Museum (NCM) and Bowling Green Assembly are pleased to announce plans to resume plant tours of the only facility in the world where Corvettes are manufactured.  Tours will go on sale to the public via the National Corvette Museum’s website on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

National Corvette Museum members qualify for early booking access, beginning on Tuesday, October 25, 2022. Tour scheduling will take place at the time of purchase with public tours expected to resume before the end of the year.

In 1981, General Motors moved production of the Chevrolet Corvette from St. Louis, MO to 600 Corvette Drive, Bowling Green, KY. Known as “America’s Sports Car,” the plant tour allows visitors to watch an icon in the making. The Corvette is the world’s longest-running, continuously produced passenger car with more than 1.75 million produced. The GM site consists of 212 acres, and the plant has 1.7 million square feet – equivalent to 39 acres or 29.5 football fields, under roof.

Plant tours were initially suspended in 2017 due to plant enhancements and significant layout changes of the facility. The Covid pandemic further delayed plant tours. “We have been waiting for this day for what feels like an eternity,” said Kai Spande, Plant Director for the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant and Board Chairman of the National Corvette Museum. “It’s a great point of pride for our workforce to be able to share what it takes to make America’s Sports Car. We cannot wait to start welcoming Corvette customers, enthusiasts, and friends back for tours of our plant.”

Advanced reservations are recommended. Some walk up admission may be available but is not guaranteed day-of tour. For more information on plant tours, visit  corvettemuseum.org .

About The National Corvette Museum:  Since 1953, the Corvette has been America’s Sports Car.  The National Corvette Museum is a 501 (c) 3, not-for-profit foundation, serving as an educational and research institution with the mission of celebrating the Corvette’s invention and preserving the legendary automobile’s past, present, and future. For more information visit  corvettemuseum.org  or call 270-781-7973.

National Corvette Museum To Suspend Factory Tours In 2024

You have until February 5 to tour the Bowling Green facility.

Corvette E-Ray

The National Corvette Museum has announced it will suspend factory tours of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant in early 2024 due to "manufacturing advancements."

According to the museum, Corvette assembly plant tours will be suspended for an unknown period starting February 5, 2024. "Tours offered by the National Corvette Museum of GM's Bowling Green Assembly Plant will be suspended beginning Monday, February 5, 2024. The National Corvette Museum will continue regular operations," reads the announcement.

The museum itself does not know when factory tours will commence. Mariah Hughes, media relations and marketing production manager for the National Corvette Museum, told Road & Track that the museum "is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization not affiliated with General Motors. At this time, we do not yet have a date for plant tours to resume."

With no official reason for the temporary termination of factory tours, one can only speculate on the cause. Released as a MY2020, the Corvette should be gearing up for a mid-cycle refresh. It's safe to assume that GM would want to keep these updates under wraps, and having 'Vette fans meandering through the facility isn't the best way to do that.

Another reason could be the addition of new Corvette models. The Z06 and E-Ray aren't the only new additions to the lineup. The upcoming ZR1 would be positioned as the halo vehicle within the lineup . With even more aggressive styling, this extreme Corvette is expected to use a twin-turbocharged LT7 5.5-liter V8 with more than 800 horsepower.

This model is expected to arrive as a MY2025, so we still have time to wait before it debuts.

However, Chevrolet may be preparing the factory to accommodate this new model. That means new tooling or equipment may need to be installed. More importantly, early pre-production ZR1s could be rolling off the production line starting in February next year.

Don't fret if you plan on visiting the facility. The museum is still conducting tours until February, which will allow Corvette fans to see how their favorite sports cars are made . If you're interested in the manufacturing process of the 'Vette, tours generally last around one-and-a-half hours, while tickets cost $50 each. Unfortunately, children under the age of 13 are not permitted.

As a consolation, the Corvette Museum will remain open for fans to peruse. In 2014, a sinkhole caused extensive damage to the facility and wrecked several vehicles. Thankfully, these pristine classic Corvettes were restored .

General Motors Bowling Green Assembly suspends tours at Corvette plant

B OWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - Last year, the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly plant attracted 30,000 visitors with tours, bringing fans and enthusiasts from all over the globe to see what goes into making luxury sports cars.

However, starting Feb. 5, plant tours are being suspended due to manufacturing advancements, according to the National Corvette Museum website.

“There comes a season where it’s time for us to continue to focus internally a little bit and to advance our manufacturing, such that we can continue to produce award-winning supercars right here in Bowling Green,” said Plant Manager of Bowling Green Assembly, Ray Theriault.

It has not been released what the manufacturing advancements entail, but the closure is only temporary.

“We really enjoy having the public in Bowling Green assembly,” Theriault said. “We really enjoy having enthusiasts and our customers here because it is a win-win for both. We get a ton of joy and happiness from having the customers in, so we’re anxious to take care of what we need to take care of and then we’ll open back up for tours.”

Currently, there is no set date for the tours to open back up again. For more information on tours, go to the National Corvette Museum website.

Tours will be suspended at the GM Bowling Green Assembly Corvette Plant starting Feb. 5.

General Motors Bowling Green Assembly hosts flag raising to complete BeautifI-65 Project

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - A flag raising has been conducted at General Motors to mark the seventh flag installation of “BeautifI-65,” a beautification project aimed at boosting economic development, tourism, and showcasing patriotism in Bowling Green.

“We call this’ BeautifI-65′ because we’re enhancing 10 1/2 miles of I-65, [which] is 1100 miles long,” said Chairman of Operation Pride and Former Bowling Green Mayor Johnny Webb. “It goes from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and there’s nothing like this here in Bowling Green. You won’t find it anywhere else in those 1100 miles.”

Around 65,000 cars pass by the city of Bowling Green on the I-65 every day, and “BeautifI-65″ is meant to appeal to and draw in travelers. The 130-foot-tall American flags are placed along the interstate in front of prominent businesses in Bowling Green.

“Nothing screams Bowling Green or the USA more than a giant American flag flying in front of a Corvette plant,” said Plant Director of General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Ray Theriault.

The project is sponsored by Operation PRIDE, with its entirety being privately funded.

“All the money that we have raised here and, to date, it’s about five and a half million dollars. It’s all raised from the private sector, from individuals and small businesses, not one penny of taxpayer money has gone into building all of this out here on I-65. [We’re] really proud of that fact,” Webb said.

The event was held in front of the General Motor Assembly’s administration building on Tuesday afternoon.

Workers at the General Motors Plant gathered outside of the plant to watch the flag raising, which included the “Pledge of Allegiance,” and a rendition of “Taps” by Retired Veteran Malcolm Cherry on the bugle.

Webb says this project is not finished and hopes to install 9 of these flags along the interstate.
