Why is Lizzo being sued? Explaining the lawsuit by her former dancers

Three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers have filed a lawsuit against the “Juice” singer, her production company and dance captain Shirlene Quigley, alleging sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment. In the suit, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez describe various incidents in which Lizzo, who is known for promoting body positivity, allegedly weight-shamed and mistreated her employees, as first reported by NBC News.

Lizzo addressed the accusations by her former dancers , calling their allegations “false” and “outrageous” in an Aug. 3 statement posted on her social accounts. In response, the plaintiffs’ attorney, Ron Zambrano, pushed back, accusing her of “flagrantly violating the law.”

Most recently, the lawyer representing the three dancers told NBC News on Aug. 8 that they have been reviewing new complaints and allegations from at least six people who say they have worked with Lizzo.

The news came the same day that the Made in America music festival, which had Lizzo and SZA among the headliners, was canceled.

Respective representatives for Quigley and the production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, have not responded to NBC News’ requests for comment.

As this story continues to evolve, here’s what to know about the lawsuit involving Lizzo and her former dancers.

Who is suing Lizzo?

Lizzo, 35, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, is being sued by three of her former backup dancers: Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez.

Crystal Williams, Lizzo dancer

Davis and Williams both began working with Lizzo after appearing on her Amazon reality show, “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” in 2021 and were fired earlier this year, according to the lawsuit.

Arianna Davis, Lizzo Dancer

Rodriguez also began working with Lizzo in 2021 after appearing in the music video for her song “Rumors” and resigned in 2023, according to the suit.

What is Lizzo accused of?

The three former dancers have leveled several allegations against Lizzo. Here are the key ones outlined in the lawsuit:

Alleged weight-shaming

Davis alleges that Lizzo and a choreographer raised questions about her commitment to her job on tour that were “thinly veiled” concerns about her weight gain, according to the suit.

Davis said in an interview with TODAY on Aug. 2 that while she never experienced “blatant fatphobia,” she believes she was being called out subtly for her weight.

“It was very nuanced and very underlying underneath all the other issues that were going on,” Davis said. “I just had this feeling that they had a problem with the way I was gaining weight and looking different and that I wasn’t ‘the same’ as when they first cast me.”

Alleged sexual harassment

In the lawsuit, Davis described an alleged incident with Lizzo earlier this year at an Amsterdam strip club, Bananenbar. Davis alleges that Lizzo pressured her to touch the breasts of a nude woman on stage.

Davis said no, but she says Lizzo led a group chant to pressure her to do it, “demanding a visibly uncomfortable Ms. Davis to engage with the performer,” according to the suit.

Eventually, after being pressured, Davis “briefly touched” the performer’s breast, the lawsuit says.

“I was very, very mortified, everyone burst into laughter,” Davis told TODAY in her Aug. 2 interview.

Davis says that after this incident, Lizzo allegedly began pressuring a member of her security staff to get on stage and “take it off,” according to the lawsuit.

“Plaintiffs were aghast with how little regard Lizzo showed for the bodily autonomy of her employees and those around her, especially in the presence of many people whom she employed,” the lawsuit says.

Allegedly creating a hostile work environment

The lawsuit alleges that on April 20, 2023, Lizzo falsely accused her dancers of drinking before performances, demanded they re-audition for their spots, and said if she didn’t approve of a dancer’s performance, that person would be fired. This results in an “excruciating” 12-hour rehearsal, according to the lawsuit.

Davis said in the suit she was so scared she would be fired if she left the rehearsal to use the bathroom that she soiled herself. Williams says she confronted Lizzo in a meeting, saying it wasn’t true that the dancers were drinking before shows.

“Well if you’re not, then good for y’all,” Lizzo allegedly replied.

On April 26, Lizzo’s tour manager fired Williams, citing budget cuts, the suit says.

The suit also describes an alleged meeting with dancers on April 27 in which Lizzo “repeatedly” referenced Williams’ termination, allegedly telling her team that she had “eyes and ears everywhere.” Davis recorded this meeting because she suffers from an eye condition that can make her “disoriented in stressful situations,” according to the suit.

Days later, Lizzo allegedly held an emergency meeting when she discovered that the previous April 27 meeting had been recorded, the suit says. She “became furious, hurling expletives at the group and stated that she was going to go around the room, person-by-person until someone told Lizzo who made the recording,” according to the lawsuit.

The suit says Davis confirmed that she had recorded the meeting, allegedly told Lizzo she hadn’t meant any harm and had deleted the video. Lizzo allegedly responded, “There is nothing you can say to make me believe you.”

Davis was fired that day, and the third dancer involved in the lawsuit, Noelle Rodriguez, resigned, according to the lawsuit.

Lizzo allegedly responded to Rodriguez’s resignation by “cracking her knuckles, balling her fists” and shouting at the dancer, the suit says.

How has Lizzo responded to the allegations?

Lizzo denied the accusations raised in the lawsuit in a statement posted on her social accounts Aug. 3.

“My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized,” she wrote. “Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.”

“These sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional.”

She also said in her statement that she “would absolutely never criticize or terminate an employee because of their weight.”

Lizzo’s attorney, Marty Singer, said in a statement to NBC News that the lawsuit is “specious and without merit.”

He cited a video from April 2023, recorded for Season Two of Lizzo’s reality show, “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” in which Davis spoke positively of Lizzo, calling her a “queen” and saying she looked up to her.

“These do not sound like the words of someone who was harassed or discriminated against by someone they then described as ‘THE QUEEN,’” Singer said in his statement. “We are confident that Lizzo will be completely vindicated in this matter.”

In response to Singer’s comments about the video, Davis said in a statement that she wanted to saved her job. “This video was done before the bulk of our allegations occurred, and this was just me grasping at straws and my last attempt to make her see how committed I was to being loyal to her and her camp,” she told NBC News.

Meanwhile, Zambrano, the attorney representing all three dancers, issued his own statement in response to Lizzo’s Aug. 3 Instagram post, saying Lizzo had “failed her own brand and has let down her fans.”

“The dismissive comments and utter lack of empathy are quite telling about her character and only serve to minimize the trauma she has caused the plaintiffs and other employees who have now come forward sharing their own negative experiences,” he said. “While Lizzo notes it was never her intention ‘to make anyone feel uncomfortable,’ that is exactly what she did to the point of demoralizing her dancers and flagrantly violating the law.”

What is dance captain Shirlene Quigley accused of?

In addition to Lizzo, dance captain Shirlene Quigley and Lizzo’s production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, are also named as defendants in the lawsuit. Not every claim in the lawsuit is being brought against every defendant, and some claims are made by individual plaintiffs.

The lawsuit’s accusations of religious discrimination are being brought against the production company and Quigley, who served as a judge on “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.”

According to the suit, Quigley “was not only vocal about her religious belief but took every opportunity to proselytize to any and all in her presence regardless of protestations.” The suit also alleges that when Quigley discovered Davis was a virgin, it became “a topic of extreme importance to Quigley.”

According to the lawsuit, Davis never gave Quigley “permission to share this private detail” about her life.

Quigley also allegedly simulated sexual acts and shared graphic details of her sexual fantasies with the other dancers, making the plaintiffs “uncomfortable,” according to the lawsuit.

What is the production company accused of?

The lawsuit includes allegations of false imprisonment against Big Grrrl Big Touring for allegedly forcing Davis to stay in a room after she was fired so her phone could be searched for the recording of the April 27 meeting.

The lawsuit also alleges that performers of color on the dance crew experienced racial discrimination.

Members of the management team allegedly described Williams, Davis and other Black team members as “lazy, unprofessional, ‘snarky,’ and generally having bad attitudes,” according to the lawsuit, which said that none of these same allegations were leveled against dancers who are not Black.

The lawsuit’s racial harassment complaint is being brought by Davis and Williams against Big Grrrl Big Touring, but not against Lizzo herself.

Lawyers for the three dancers are reviewing more complaints

Zambrano told NBC News on Aug. 8 that his firm is looking into new allegations from at least six people who said they toured with Lizzo or worked with her on “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.”

Per Zambrano, the allegations are of a “sexually charged environment” and failure to pay employees. However, he said that after reviewing the complaints some are potentially actionable but others are not.

Lizzo backlash — and support — continues amid sexual harassment and body-shaming allegations. Here’s the latest

It’s been a few weeks since three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers filed a civil lawsuit against the artist, citing sexual harassment and and a hostile work environment — a lawsuit that has sparked a lot of backlash for the singer in the days since it was filed.

“These last few days have been gut wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing,” Lizzo said in a statement posted on social media Aug. 3. “My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized.

“Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed,” Lizzo continued, per The New York Times . “These sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional.”

Here are the latest updates regarding the lawsuit and backlash.

What is the Lizzo lawsuit about?

In a civil lawsuit filed by three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers on Aug. 1, the singer has been accused of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment, per The Associated Press . The defendants include Lizzo, her production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc., and dance captain Shirlene Quigley.

“Plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez make numerous charges including sexual, religious and racial harassment, disability discrimination, assault and false imprisonment,” The Associated Press reported.

The lawsuit cites an “overtly sexual” work environment that involved “outings where nudity and sexuality were a focal point,” The New York Times reported.

“The dancers say that Lizzo paid undue attention to the weight gain of one of the plaintiffs, repeatedly yelled and cursed at performers, and invited them to attend events as spectators without disclosing that there would be nudity,” per The Washington Post .

Davis, specifically, claims Lizzo shamed her for weight gain before getting fired — an allegation that has generated a lot of disappointment online from fans, considering Lizzo has made body positivity a pillar of her career. Davis was fired in May for recording a meeting where Lizzo was giving feedback about her dancers’ performances, per The Associated Press .

In the lawsuit, Davis says Lizzo asked her “why she seemed less bubbly and vivacious than she did prior to the tour starting” — questions she alleges were “thinly veiled concerns about (her) weight gain, which Lizzo had previously called attention to after noticing it at the South by Southwest music festival,” per The Hollywood Reporter .

Davis says Lizzo never explicitly asked about her weight gain, but claims she was left with the “impression that she needed to explain her weight gain and disclose intimate personal details about her life in order to keep her job,” according to The Hollywood Reporter .

“I believe she was trying to allude to the fact that I was gaining weight in a way that she wouldn’t get canceled, if that makes sense,” Davis told CBS News . “It was not a like, ‘You’re fat, you’re fired.’ It was never ‘you’re gaining too much weight,’ it was never blatant, it was very nuanced.”

Lizzo also allegedly told the dancers they should be grateful since dancers typically get fired for weight gain, per CBS News .

“Everything that she stands for as an artist is a big reason as to why I think people stand behind her as much as they do,” Williams told CBS News . “To me, I just couldn’t sit with the fact that this was happening behind the scenes, and this is a big part of her fan base, but she’s kind of contradicting everything she stands for behind-the- scenes.”

Davis and Williams were fired in the spring of this year, while Rodriguez resigned shortly after, The New York Times reported.

Lizzo responds to the lawsuit

Lizzo said she is passionate about her work and holds her dancers to high standards.

“Sometimes I have to make hard decisions but it’s never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like they aren’t valued as an important part of the team,” she said in her statement.

The artist specifically addressed the claims of sexual harassment and weight-shaming in her statement.

“I am very open with my sexuality and expressing myself but I cannot accept or allow people to use that openness to make me out to be something I am not,” Lizzo said in a statement, according to The New York Times . “There is nothing I take more seriously than the respect we deserve as women in the world. I know what it feels like to be body shamed on a daily basis and would absolutely never criticize or terminate an employee because of their weight.”

Lizzo faced backlash

Shortly following news of the lawsuit, a headline on a Vanity Fair article read, “ Lizzo’s dethroning has been swift .”

The night the lawsuit broke, Beyonce reportedly skipped over Lizzo’s name in “Break My Soul (Queen’s Remix)” at a concert. In the song, Lizzo’s name typically appears alongside artists like Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj, honoring Black women in the entertainment industry, CNN reported. But recent news indicates that Beyonce has inserted Lizzo’s name back in the song, and even shouted “Lizzo! I love you, Lizzo!” at a recent concert, per Variety .

Since the lawsuit was filed, Lizzo has lost more than 200,000 followers on Instagram, per The New York Post . The annual Made in America festival — which this year featured Lizzo among its headliners — announced on Aug. 8 that it would be canceled, citing “ severe circumstances outside of production control, ” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Lizzo has also reportedly been dropped from consideration for the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show, per Yahoo! Entertainment .

Former employees of Lizzo have expressed support for the lawsuit, per The Independent . Filmmaker Sophia Nahli Allison opened up about a negative experience working with Lizzo a few years ago and offered support to the dancers who filed the lawsuit.

“This kind of abuse of power happens far too often,” Allison said in a statement, per USA Today . “Much love and support to the dancers.”

The lawsuit has generated significant criticism online, with many fans calling out the alleged discrepancy between Lizzo’s treatment of her dancers behind the scenes and her public image of empowerment and body positivity.

“Lizzo’s dancers made the show for me,” one fan wrote on Twitter . “If this is all true what a hypocrite. You can’t say live in your own skin and then criticize the dancers for gaining weight.”

Lizzo also has her fair share of supporters

But many fans online have also come to the singer’s defense, saying they will wait for the lawsuit to play out before making a judgment. On Aug. 17, members of Lizzo’s current dance crew issued a statement of support.

“We had the time of our lives on The Special Tour. We have been so honored to share the stage with such amazing talent,” the dancers wrote on Instagram, per USA Today. “The commitment to character and culture taking precedence over every movement and moment has been one of the greatest lessons and blessings that we could possibly ask for. “Thank you to Lizzo for shattering limitations and kicking in the doorway for the Big Grrrl and Big Boiii dancers to do what we love,” the dancers continued. “You have created a platform where we have been able to parallel our passion with a purpose! Not only for us, but for women and all people breaking barriers.”

Lizzo previously addressed the backlash she has received and thanked people who have reached out to her to show support.

“I am not here to be looked at as a victim, but I also know that I am not the villain that people and the media have portrayed me to be these last few days,” she said in her statement .

Just last month, Lizzo received wide praise for her interaction with a young fan in Australia who had been bullied on social media.

“They always tell me I’m not good enough,” the fan told Lizzo during a concert in Sydney, per CNN .

Lizzo proceeded to invite the fan onstage and put her arm around her, telling the audience, “The words that we say have a long-lasting effect on people.”

The lawsuit has been filed — what happens next?

The dancers responded to Lizzo’s statement, calling it “disheartening.”

“Personally, looking at the response from Lizzo was so disheartening because she was there,” Davis said on “CNN This Morning,” per CNN . “She was there and to fix your hand, to write on a piece of paper that you discredit everything we’re saying is incredibly frustrating.”

Ron Zambrano, the attorney representing the three former dancers, told NBC News that Lizzo’s “denial of this reprehensible behavior only adds to our clients’ emotional distress.”

“Lizzo has failed her own brand and has let down her fans,” Zambrano said. “The dismissive comments and utter lack of empathy are quite telling about her character and only serve to minimize the trauma she has caused the plaintiffs and other employees who have now come forward sharing their own negative experiences.”

Zambrano also told NBC News that he is reviewing allegations from at least six other dancers who toured with Lizzo.

Moving forward, Diana Reddy, an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley’s School of Law, told The New York Times that it can be hard to prove a hostile work environment in the entertainment industry and that a settlement would be likely.

“Employment discrimination plaintiffs don’t fare particularly well in court,” Reddy told The New York Times .

Marty Singer, an attorney for Lizzo, told NBC News the lawsuit is “without merit” and that he is “confident that Lizzo will be completely vindicated in this matter.”

In Stockholm, it was the cookies — the black sesame, wasabi and white chocolate, or maybe the gluten-free coconut almond dark chocolate — that signaled to Beyoncé’s dancers, crew and roadies that Grant Bird was back.

Mr. Bird is an English pastry chef and one of 14 culinary professionals on Beyoncé’s current Renaissance World Tour , which has also employed a vegan chef and three personal chefs just for Queen B and her inner circle.

After getting Covid during rehearsals in Paris, Mr. Bird had to take a weeklong break, leaving the dessert duties for the 400 to 600 crew members to two substitute chefs. By then, the crew had gotten used to his lavish desserts, which often featured a dozen different offerings at both lunch and dinner. A pared-down sweets menu spoke to his absence.

So when the crew once again saw his signature spread of hundreds of cookies in several varieties, they knew he had returned. “That was lunch, and the whole dining room applauded,” said Mr. Bird, who has also cooked for Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber and Mötley Crüe. “They just thought, ‘He’s got to be back. Because they just knew from the style.’”

Grant Bird, in a black T-shirt, stripped apron and green baseball hat, places roasting dishes onto a rolling metal restaurant rack.

Yes, Beyoncé is one of the world’s biggest stars, but traveling with a cadre of chefs isn’t just a flex. Many touring artists now take several professional cooks, not to mention entire mobile kitchens, on the road with them for efficiency, health and morale.

While idiosyncrasies like Van Halen’s ban on brown M&Ms have become familiar lore, the suspension of concerts during the Covid years has prompted an industrywide reset, with a focus on wellness. Many tours now include a vegan chef, for instance, and place a priority on physical and mental well-being as well as lessening environmental impact.

“ Before, back in the early ’80s and ’90s, it was more of a party — cocaine and whatever they wanted. And now it’s just a business,” said Gray Rollin, Linkin Park’s longtime chef, who has also cooked on tours for Prince, Madonna and Tori Amos. “We have one job to do, and that job is to put that talent onstage. Make sure that the show goes flawlessly. And then do it again the next day.”

Joking about the 2014 tour by Linkin Park and Thirty Seconds to Mars, he added, “It was called the Carnivores Tour , but 14 of the 16 guys we cooked for were vegan.”

James Digby, a veteran tour manager who had just finished working the European leg of Avril Lavigne’s tour, is familiar with such demands.

“You cannot get a nonvegetarian meal in catering on a Paul McCartney tour. That’s a challenge. Because most roadies I know are carnivores,” Mr. Digby said. “If the artist is trying to change the world, one tour at a time, by saying everybody’s a vegetarian, my job is to echo that.”

Regardless of the cuisine, the production demands are significant. The industry standard for a sizable tour requires four meals on setup and show days: breakfast, lunch, dinner and an after-concert meal, often eaten on a bus.

“An army marches on its stomach, so you’ve got to feed the troops,” Mr. Digby said. By troops, he meant the band, the backup singers and dancers, stage builders, the pyrotechnics crew, security guards, managers, bus drivers and all the other people involved in the high-stakes business of live entertainment.

At a recent Lizzo show at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, Calif., lunch featured a juicing station with a blender-ready basket of vegetables. There were corn dogs, fried chicken sandwiches and plant-based Impossible sliders, as well as couscous, squash, carrots and cookies.

It was all prepared in the arena’s kitchen. Normally, though, Latitude 45 Catering , the company in charge of culinary operations for the vegan artist’s Special tour , cooks in an elaborate mobile kitchen that packs into specialized flight cases and is reassembled in each new city.

The custom-built kitchens, including cabinets, shelves, ovens and workstations were constructed to maximize space and efficiency, and provide an elusive sense of “sameness” on the road, said Chris Mitchell, the company’s owner.

“Everything has a place, and it goes back to that same place every single day,” he said. “If somebody in the kitchen needs a stainless steel bowl — and without looking most of the time — they can just point and say, ‘Would you please give me the third bowl in that stack over there?’”

HSG Catering , the Chicago-based company currently working on the Eric Church tour, uses a 53-foot mobile kitchen containing a walk-in freezer, a walk-in cooler and an 80-gallon water heater. The unit is also equipped with a meat smoker, a wood-fired grill, convection ovens and a machine that can “sous vide 300 steaks at once,” said Bob Schneeberger, HSG’s president.

While the chefs sometimes accompany artists on private jets or in armored cars, with police escorts, cooking and baking on the road can also put them in generator-powered makeshift kitchens in fields or parking lots.

Mr. Mitchell says the job calls for a particular type of person who enjoys troubleshooting and being constantly on the move, and who can endure sleeping on tour buses for months at a time. The conditions cultivate a fraternity of sorts — many chefs proudly wear T-shirts from previous tours.

There’s also a royal-food-tester aspect to the gig.

“One case of food poisoning, and you’re canceling shows for at least 48 hours,” Mr. Digby said. As shows become bigger spectacles and ticket prices soar ever higher, an incident like that can put millions of dollars at risk.

One thing that may not have changed much over time is the pickiness of the artists, who certainly have their idiosyncratic likes and dislikes.

“Gene Simmons used to like a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato and pickles on the side,” said Mr. Rollin, who cooked for the Kiss bassist in 2008 and 2009. “But then he would never touch the lettuce, pickles and tomatoes, ever.” Jared Leto would want organic purple popcorn with every meal.

Travel can also make the desired foods hard to come by. In the 1990s, Marilyn Manson insisted on Kraft Mac & Cheese, so boxes were shipped to England, Mr. Digby said. “Guess what? Kraft manufactures a different variety of Kraft macaroni and cheese for English consumers.”

Mr. Bird, who cooked for the K-pop group Blackpink in Chicago last summer, said the band brought a separate truck just to transport its favored brands of instant ramen noodles. Like some other caterers who have worked K-pop tours, Mr. Bird was impressed with the emphasis put on the culinary operations, which always included a Korean buffet. “They have so many different food stations and stuff. I’ve never seen that before,” he said.

As for Beyoncé, Mr. Bird sent fruit platters and cookies to her dressing room. And while he couldn’t say for sure what the pop star’s favorites are, he did note: “As far as I’m aware, the ones that are particularly eaten are the Reese’s cups cookies” — a specialty of Mr. Bird’s that have a vanilla base with Belgian milk chocolate and bits of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups folded throughout.

In addition to having his confections in high demand, Mr. Bird was touched to see his name in the online credits for the Renaissance tour .

“At the end of the show, they normally give recognition to the lighting, the staging and people a lot closer to them,” said Mr. Bird, who is currently touring with the country singer Sam Hunt . “But they never mention that they travel with us catering.”

Lizzo says hostile work environment allegations against her are 'unbelievable'

Lizzo performs at the Governors Ball Music Festival in the Queens borough of New York in June.

Three professional dancers filed a lawsuit against Lizzo for allegedly creating a hostile work environment, but she says the allegations are "sensationalized stories" by former employees who acted unprofessionally on tour.

Lizzo's former dancers, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez filed a total of nine charges against the Grammy-winning artist and her team spanning from May 2021 to May 2023. During that time the dancers were "weight-shamed, forced to endure sexually denigrating behavior and preaching about sexuality and Christianity, and were pressured into participating in disturbing sex shows," according a statement from West Coast Employment Lawyers, who are representing the plaintiffs.

"The stunning nature of how Lizzo and her management team treated their performers seems to go against everything Lizzo stands for publicly, while privately she weight-shames her dancers and demeans them in ways that are not only illegal but absolutely demoralizing," WCEL attorney Ron Zambrano said in a statement.

Lizzo, a four-time Grammy-winning artist who long has been known as a backer of body positivity and self-love , responded to the allegations made against her over X Corp, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday morning.

"My work ethic, morals and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized," Lizzo writes. "Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous not to be addressed."

She writes that the former employees have publicly admitted that their behavior on tour was "inappropriate and unprofessional," and that she takes her music and performances seriously, which comes with high standards.

"Sometimes I have to make hard decisions but it's never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like they aren't valuable as an important part of the team," she writes.

Citing her own experiences with body shaming, Lizzo denies criticizing or firing an employee because of their weight. She also doubles down on her position as a champion for women, saying there is nothing she takes more seriously.

Lizzo On Feminism, Self-Love And Bringing 'Hallelujah Moments' To Stage

Music Interviews

Lizzo on feminism, self-love and bringing 'hallelujah moments' to stage.

In response, Zambrano wrote in a statement that Lizzo had failed her own brand and let down her fans.

"Her denial of this reprehensible behavior only adds to our clients' emotional distress," Zambrano writes. "While Lizzo notes it was never her intention 'to make anyone feel uncomfortable,' that is exactly what she did to the point of demoralizing her dancers and flagrantly violating the law."

The lawsuit alleges Lizzo, her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc., and the captain of her dance team, Shirlene Quigley, created an "intolerable" hostile work environment which includes, but is not limited to, "Defendants' repeated exposure of Plaintiffs to nudity against their will, and pervasive habit of sharing lewd fantasies and tales of sexual encounters."

The documents detail one occasion where Lizzo allegedly pressured Davis, Rodriguez and Williams — and the rest of her employees — to engage with nude performers in Amsterdam's red-light district, in which Davis repeatedly said she didn't want to and was "hounded" by Lizzo as a result.

One of the complaints alleges that Lizzo aggressively confronted Rodriguez, who was resigning because of how the pop star had treated Davis. The complaint alleges Lizzo stormed toward the dancer balling her hands into fists and cracking her knuckles while shouting profanities. Lizzo was restrained, according to the court documents, but Rodriguez feared Lizzo was going to attack her.

Another charge accuses Lizzo of falsely imprisoning Davis in a room, keeping her there against her will until she allowed tour staff to search her phone and iCloud storage.

Two of the plaintiffs, Davis and Williams, first met Lizzo in March 2021, while competing as contestants on the reality TV show, Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls , for a chance to join the star's live shows. Rodriguez was hired in May 2021, as a dancer for Lizzo's "Rumors" music video and stayed on with the dance team.

Davis and Williams were eventually fired, but Rodriguez resigned citing Lizzo's behavior, according to the WCEL statement.

ABOUT LIZZO

A 3x GRAMMY® Award-winning singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, and so much more, Lizzo has shifted the sound, soul, and spirit of popular music and culture. 2019’s now-classic, RIAA platinum certified debut album,  CUZ I LOVE YOU , bowed at #4 on the Billboard 200, fueled in part by such history-making hits as the platinum certified “Tempo (Feat. Missy Elliott),” the 2x platinum “Juice,” the 4x platinum “Good As Hell,” and the 7x platinum “Truth Hurts.” The latter of which ascended to #1 on  Billboard ’s “Hot 100,” affirming Lizzo as only the third female rapper to top the chart without a featured artist, as well as the first black solo female R&B singer to claim the top spot since 2012. “Truth Hurts” dominated the chart for seven weeks, further making history as the longest running #1 by a solo female rap artist ever. Named by Rolling Stone as one of the “500 Greatest Songs Of All Time,” “Truth Hurts” went on to earn a 2020 GRAMMY® Award for “Best Pop Solo Performance,” with  CUZ I LOVE YOU (DELUXE)  receiving that year’s GRAMMY® for “Best Urban Contemporary Album” and “Jerome” earning “Best Traditional R&B Performance.”

Crowned 2019’s “Entertainer of the Year” by both  TIME  and  Entertainment Weekly , Lizzo has adorned the covers of countless publications around the globe, spanning  Rolling Stone ,  Billboard ,  Elle ,  British Vogue , and many more. Among her many unforgettable TV appearances, Lizzo has lit up the stage at the American Music Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, the BET Awards,  Saturday Night Live , and an epic opening performance at the GRAMMYs, to name just a few. Expanding her imprint and influence across media, Lizzo lent her voice to the 2019 animated film, UglyDolls , and joined Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, and Cardi B in the all-star cast of that same year’s critically acclaimed  Hustlers .

Lizzo maintained this unstoppable momentum on 2021’s RIAA gold certified “ Rumors (Feat. Cardi B) ” and is now set to create her biggest, boldest, and brightest revolution thus far with her massively anticipated second full-length offering  SPECIAL  for Nice Life Recording Company/Atlantic Records, due July 15 th .

Meanwhile, last week Lizzo has made history by becoming the first person in two centuries to play the Library of Congress’ 200-year-old crystal flute .

The huge moment took place last Tuesday (September 27) at Lizzo’s Washington DC show where she played the flute which was originally owned by the fourth president of the United States, James Madison.

Sharing a clip of the performance on Twitter after the show, Lizzo wrote: “NOBODY HAS EVER HEARD THIS FAMOUS CRYSTAL FLUTE BEFORE […] NOW YOU HAVE.”

NOBODY HAS EVER HEARD THIS FAMOUS CRYSTAL FLUTE BEFORE NOW YOU HAVE IM THE FIRST & ONLY PERSON TO EVER PLAY THIS PRESIDENTIAL 200-YEAR-OLD CRYSTAL FLUTE— THANK YOU @librarycongress ❤️ pic.twitter.com/VgXjpC49sO — FOLLOW @YITTY (@lizzo) September 28, 2022

“I’M THE FIRST AND ONLY PEROSN TO EVER PLAY THIS PRESIDENTIAL 200-YEAR-OLD CRYSTAL FLUTE – THANK YOU @librarycongress.”

During her set, Lizzo – who is a classically trained flautist – also provided her fans with insight into the instrument’s history.
