Just like the Craft Center pictured above, The

CoachCal.com has a virtual tour of the new Wildcat Coal Lodge, which will serve as home to some of the students at the university, among them the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team.

As you can tell by the name, Kentucky coal operators had a great deal to do with it's construction -- to the tune of $7 million dollars. Just as a similar amount was able to get Joe Craft's name on the basketball practice facility, Kentucky coal operators got similar treatment when they made their generous donation.

Obviously, with politics being what they are and concern for emissions a major political and public health concern, there was a protest by approximately 60 students yesterday demanding that the University change the name of the dormitory. No word yet on whether or not the students and other like-minded people critical of the name were prepared to pony up $7 million dollars to replace the funds donated by the coal industry.

My guess is that the thought hasn't crossed their minds.

Kentucky Wildcat Student Life: Out with the old, in with the new Wildcat Lodge

The Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge (aka “old Wildcat Lodge” or “Wildcat Lodge” depending on when you went to UK) was demolished last Monday. When I first heard the news it really saddened me to hear that they were tearing down a building so many legends had lived in to build a new dorm. I get that UK needs it, but it’s still sad and a piece of UK history none-the-less.

Wildcat Lodge was built in 1978 and every men’s basketball player since has lived there for their time at UK. The Lodge housed half of Kentucky’s national championship teams under four different coaches. Legends like Rex Chapman, Ron Mercer, Tayshaun Prince, Derek Anderson, Antoine Walker, Tony Delk, Patrick Patterson, Jodie Meeks, Anthony Davis, John Wall, Keith Bogans, Sam Bowie, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist have all lived in that building.

I never had the chance to see the inside of old Wildcat Lodge but if you’re curious as to what it looked like, here’s Chuck Hayes giving a tour:

I have gotten a tour of the new Wildcat Coal Lodge from John Calipari himself and I can say that the facilities are much nicer than the old one. They have extra tall sinks and showers to accommodate the players, HUGE chairs in the living room, all the national championship trophies when you walk in, a mural of every Cat in the NBA for “motivation”, and they have their own rooms complete with Tempurpedic mattresses. No doubt, the new place is awesome but the old one being gone still makes me sad. I think all around UK, or at least for the die-hards the consensus is basically the same.

One student said, “I think they ruined a piece of history. The lodge has been up for years and so many legends have been through there. It served as a landmark for UK  basketball and it’s a shame they tore it down instead of making it into a museum or something else to preserve it.”

I had never really thought of making it into a museum but that would have been awesome for the BBN.

Another student also had really good point, “It’s a shame it had to be torn down, it was home to many past UK basketball legends and holds a historical value. It  also represents more of the new era, the John Calipari era of Kentucky teams now though.”

Former Cat and member of the ’96 championship team Walter McCarty lived in the Wildcat Lodge from 1993-96 said he was saddened by the news of the Lodge being torn down . “It was a great living place for all the great teams to not only bond and develop chemistry, but become a family. I have so many wonderful memories of that  building that will always remain close and be with me forever.”

McCarty was a coach at the John Calipari Pro Basketball Fantasy Camp back in August and had a chance to visit the new Wildcat Lodge while he was in Lexington.

“The new place is great, but I’m old school, the (Joe B. Hall Wildcat) Lodge will always be my Wildcat home.” McCarty said.

I would have loved to see them use the parking lot next to old Lodge for a dorm, and renovate the place and give it to another team like the women’s basketball team, personally.

I remember last season when I would walk back from Rupp after a game you would see fans waiting outside the Lodge to greet the players and maybe get an autograph. The new lodge is now across the street and I live across from it. You don’t see the fans out there as much, aside from Big Blue Madness. It seems to have changed the atmosphere. All in all, I am sad to see the old lodge go but I love getting to watch the program grow, change and evolve.

Kentucky’s basketball players have new ridiculous luxury housing including private chef, flat-screen TVs (Pictures)

wildcat coal lodge tour

Kentucky is already hard to beat on the court, and now they’re going to be even tougher to top off of it.

A video was posted to John Calipari’s website last week of the coach giving a tour of the school’s newly constructed athlete-housing dorm. The Wildcat Coal Lodge is housing the basketball team starting this year, and it provides living quarters so plush there’s no way a recruit could take a look at them and turn it down.

As The Dagger pointed out , the dorm has multiple luxurious features.

Let’s take a look at some of them.

wildcat coal lodge tour

Calipari says you won’t find any couches in the dorm. Why is that? The players only use recliners now.

wildcat coal lodge tour

Full view of the lounge, which includes the recliners, and a pool table made of Kentucky blue felt.

wildcat coal lodge tour

That’s a pretty nice looking dorm room, huh? I sure as heck didn’t have a single, much less that kind of space in my triple freshman year.

wildcat coal lodge tour

The bathrooms are specially designed with a 7-footer in mind. The bathroom sink, you may notice, comes up higher than your average sink so that the players don’t have to bend over as far.

wildcat coal lodge tour

With flat screen TVs on every floor displaying the players’ practice/meeting schedule, they’ll have no excuse for missing events.

wildcat coal lodge tour

Yes, those living in the Coal Lodge get a private chef. Grilled cheese? Burger? Cheesesteak? He’s got you covered.

wildcat coal lodge tour

And of course there are plenty of reminders of Kentucky’s winning tradition. All the national championships are displayed on the first floor, and they also have a wall that shows all the players in the NBA to come from the program.

Walk into that building, and you know you’re at a winning program that puts its players into the pros.

The Wildcat Coal Lodge is also located across the street from the basketball team’s practice facility, which makes it extremely convenient. Because, after a full day of running at practice, who really wants to walk a mile or two across campus to get home?

Another feature Calipari mentioned is that there are extra storage areas downstairs, as well as washers and dryers.

You’re probably wondering if this is legal based on the NCAA’s standards, and it is. As The Dagger states, student-athlete living quarters must be populated with at least 50% of non-athletes in order to be permissible. That means there are some extremely lucky students who get to live that privileged baller life.

In a throwback to 19th century backroom deal making, University of Kentucky President Lee T. Todd Jr. and several members of the UKY Board of Trustees refused to consider any formal student statements this week during their meeting to barter away the name of a Wildcat basketball dorm for Big Coal donations, and then fled to a back room as students made their testimonies.

But the game ain’t over yet.

The scandalous Trustees may have voted 16-3 to approve rebuilding and renaming the beloved Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge as the Wildcat Coal Lodge, but the public relations nightmare has just begun.

Rachel Maddow pilloried the scam on her program this week, with a knock-out interview with the brilliant Nation sports reporter Dave Zirin:

Grist thanks its sponsors. Become one .

To support our nonprofit environmental journalism, please consider disabling your ad-blocker to allow ads on Grist. Here's How

According to university reports, the nebulous Wildcat Coal Lodge still has to pass through the Council on Postsecondary Education and the legislature’s Capital Projects and Bond Oversight Committee.

In truth, the $7 million of dirty coal money promised for the Wildcat coffers is a pittance compared to the coal industry welfare subsidies that the state of Kentucky hands out every year. According to a recent MACED report, Kentucky taxpayers annually donate $115 million to the coal industry in infrastructure and research costs — this doesn’t even include the billions of dollars in massive external costs to the health care industry and the environment.

In the meantime, student, faculty and alumni outrage at the administrative bungling of this growing scandal continues, while the potential university violations, and the egregious backgrounds of the Big Coal pushers continue to pile up.

Rallied by Alliance Coal baron Joe Craft, the so-called “Difference Makers” behind this bizarre push to drag the legendary Wildcat basketball team into the muck as a mascot of Big Coal include some of the most outspoken supporters of the controversial process that has devastated the economies and well-being of historic eastern Kentucky communities and wiped out hundreds of miles of streams and hundreds of lush mountains in the state.

Difference Makers include Charles Baird, Chairman of Coal Operators and Associates, an outfit that has repeatedly supported mountaintop removal, and erroneously claimed in a memo to the EPA [PDF] that mountaintop removal provided “immeasurable economic and social benefits to one of the poorest regions of the United States” and resulted in no significant water pollution.

In truth, eastern Kentucky’s coal counties have lost over 60 percent of their coal mining jobs in the last generation due to mountaintop removal operations and mechanization, while poverty and unemployment have soared.

Hundreds of miles of streams have been jammed with mining waste; in 2000, over 300 million gallons of toxic coal sludge leaked into Martin County [PDF], an accident 30 times larger than the Exxon Valdez disaster, devastating aquatic life and watersheds for miles.

Another Difference Maker is Joy Mining, whose sister company, P&H Mining Equipment, makes the massive draglines used in strip mining and mountaintop removal operations .

According to some observers, the trustees dirty coal scheme of creating a Wildcat Coal Lodge, in a designated LEED-certified building, is also in clear violation of the UKY policy on naming university property:

Naming new University structures, properties, or portions thereof, e.g., playing fields, rooms, and plazas, (hereafter “property”) and changing the names of existing property, whether on the main campus or elsewhere, is of interest to the entire University community. An appropriate name accounts for present and possible future uses of the property, and reflects functions performed and interests served by the property. When some other name seems more appropriate than a functionally descriptive one, the nominations should demonstrate that the remarkable associations of that name, either with the history of the University or the nation or with the advancement of knowledge and learning, and guarantee that it will remain memorable long beyond the lifetime of those who propose the name. Nominations whose claims are parochial, of recent date and untested by the passage of time, or based on personal enthusiasm should be avoided. It is appropriate to express the esteem and appreciation the University holds for one who has brought honor to the institution by personal accomplishments, or who has given significantly of personal time and money, by giving the person’s name to a University property. Wherever possible, however, the person’s name should be given to a property related to some activity appropriate to that person’s field of interest or endeavor.

As outraged students, faculty and alumni shift to a full court press against the administration’s misguided pander to dirty coal, here are some statements from university advocates ignored by the trustees:

Hopefully, by the end of this academic year I’ll have three degrees from the University of Kentucky, including the highest in my field. My whole family’s from Eastern Kentucky and they’ve always been proud that I’m part of the UK tradition. It’s disappointing to see that tradition sold off like this to the most insidious polluters and wreckers of community in our state. I lived for several years in Cynthiana, Ky., and saw Joe B. Hall at gas stations and community events. It was good to know that local people could do something great — something heroic. That’s why his name was honored. Coal is choking our state to death and, rather than listen to the student body, the staff, and the faculty, the Board of Trustees has chosen to degrade a wonderful tradition and to trammel the dreams of Kentuckians.

-Brandon Absher, current UK student and Kentucky Mountain Justice organizer

Eastern Kentucky youth have to work extremely hard to get themselves out of the coal fields and make opportunities for themselves, often ending up at state universities like EKU, as I did, and UK. It is demoralizing for these youth to watch coal that has impoverished and sickened their families for generations be burned on their campus and touted on “academic” structures.

– Tanya Turner of Pineville, Ky., Eastern Kentucky University alum, Kentucky Mountain Justice organizer, and descendant of Kentucky coal miners.

President Lee Todd has given some hope in the last few years by creating the President’s Sustainability Advisory Committee and Student Sustainability Council in order to transition UK to a more sustainable future, but with every decision he makes like this one, it becomes all the more evident that he has no regard for this campus initiative. How are our professor’s suppose to present information in an unbiased way, when UK has made its position clear.

-Julia Lou Lepping, Native Kentuckian, UK Alum and active organizer with Kentucky Mountain Justice.

Naming a new LEED-certified campus building the “Wildcat Coal Lounge” is a bad move for this university. It is an egregious case of industrial product placement in a public institution. It is an insult to Kentucky basketball fans who remember Joe B. Hall as a great coach worthy of remembering. It is a step backward for a University whose goal is to move forward to Top 20 status. Finally this decision ignores the industry’s history of exploitation that has enriched coal corporations and corrupt politicians and impoverished Appalachia’s communities and devastated its ecosystems. This decision is unacceptable, but sadly it is just business as usual in Kentucky. We must raise our voices in opposition.

-Martin Mudd, UK physics graduate student and Kentucky Mountain Justice organizer

Jewish Tour

Jewish tour

This tour gives a well-rounded overview of life of Jews in Russia in the past and at the present time. Tourists get a chance to visit the main Jewish attractions of Moscow: the Grand Choral Synagogue, the Memorial Synagogue in the Victory Park (with the museum of Holocaust and Jewish Heritage inside it) and Jewish Museum & Tolerance Center, which is situated in a big Jewish community.

We start from the Grand Choral Synagogue, the most beautiful and the oldest synagogue of Moscow, situated in the very center. Since the day of its opening on June 1, 1906, the synagogue has been active without interruption, and has remained the center of religious and social life of Jewish people in Russia.

wildcat coal lodge tour

We continue to the Memorial Synagogue, which is situated in the Victory Park, the main WWII memorial in Moscow. We will walk through the Victory Park, observe the magnificent WWII museum and monuments and arrive to the Memorial Synagogue. The building of the synagogue is a fine example of contemporary synagogue architecture. The renowned Israeli sculptor Frank Meisler created the interior décor. The museum of Jewish Heritage and Holocaust tells us thrilling and tragic stories of Russian Jews.

wildcat coal lodge tour

After lunch break we will visit the Jewish Museum & Tolerance Center, the best museum of that kind in Russia.

The Jewish museum continues telling stories of Russian Jews. You will have a chance to learn about the “attitude of Tsars to Jews and Jews to Tsars” in Russian Empire. The exposition shows why the Pale of Settlement appeared and how ideas of Zionism and Assimilation developed in late 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum describes the active role of Jews in the Soviet revolution and in life of the USSR at its early stage; the heroism of Jews in the Red Army in WW2 and Holocaust on the territory of the USSR; life of Soviet Jews after creation of the state of Israel; repressions against Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee led by the popular actor Solomon Mikhoels and Jewish Doctors’ Plot; movement of Refuseniks and dissidents, when Zionism was called a risk to security of the Soviet state. And many other interesting stories!

wildcat coal lodge tour

The Jewish museum has a unique design. It has a lot of documentary movies on display, interviews with prominent personalities and eyewitnesses of different historic events.

Upon request, we can organize a visit to Schneerson library, which is a unique collection of books that belonged to the dynasty of Lubavitch tzadiks before the Socialist Revolution and was nationalized by the Soviet Government in 1920s.
