The Golden Temple, also known as the Namdroling Monastery, is one of the most well-known tourist attractions in Coorg and is located in Bylakuppe, which is the second-largest Tibetan settlement in India after Dharamshala. Bylakuppe is located at a distance of 34 km from Madikeri, 4.5 km from Kushalnagar, 7 km from Cauvery Nisargadhama, and 87 km from Mysore.

Bylakuppe is a Tibetan refugee settlement area that was created by Lugsum Samdupling and Dickyi Larsoe in 1969 and is located near to the Bangalore-Coorg highway to the west of the Mysore district. The majestic Namdroling Monastery is the main tourist attraction in this area. The Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple, was founded by Drubwang Padma Norbu Rinpoche in 1963. The sangha community here is made up of more than 5000 monks and nuns, making it the world's biggest Nyingmapa teaching center.

The enormous Golden Temple complex is home to 40-foot-tall gilded statues of the Buddha Sakyamuni, Amitayus, and Guru Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche). The tower of the temple is very intricate. The doorway's exterior walls are flanked by enormous, vibrant murals. Large gold knockers and a thick plaited rope with tassels hang from the crimson doors' exteriors. Colorful paintings on the walls show gods and devils from Tibetan Buddhist mythology.

The monastery receives a sizable number of tourists from India and elsewhere in addition to young Tibetans seeking enlightenment and education. It is fascinating to witness hundreds of Buddhist monks fervently praying and performing holy rites.

With its planted gardens all around it, this location is a serene and regal sight. When festivities like the Tibetan New Year (Losar), which is fervently celebrated at the monastery, are taking place, the town is a treat to visit. It is observed throughout a fifteen-day period in February or March. The monastery holds large thangkas—Tibetan silk paintings with needlework depicting Buddhist deities—and colorful lama dances during that time.

The neighboring Sera Monastery, which was inspired by the ancient Sera University in Tibet, is another option for tourists. The local educational hub is Sera Monastery, which is a part of the Gelugpa branch of Buddhism. It is located about 2 kilometres from Namdroling Monastery's main complex. The Sakya Monastery and the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery are two other smaller monasteries that are equally stunning. On the approach to the main monastery, there is a two-story building called Sakya Monastery. One of the four major monasteries in central Tibet, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery served as the Panchen Lama's first residence. In 1972, this was reinstated in Bylakuppe.

The prayer is at 1 PM and is a beautiful event to witness. Hours: 9 AM – 6 PM.

Detailed Guide: Places to Visit with One Day Coorg Local Sightseeing Tour with Dubare Elephant Camp by Car

The following places will be covered as part of your one day Coorg local sightseeing tour with Dubare Elephant Camp in a private cab :

1. Dubare Elephant Camp

Dubare Elephant Camp is a conservation camp for those elephants who participate in the Dussehra festival of Mysore. The major attractions of the camp are boating and elephant sighting. Provisions for river rafting are made for tourists during monsoons or after a few days of heavy rainfall.

Children especially love visiting Dubare Elephant Camp with our one day coorg local sightseeing tour because they get to feed, bathe and pet these elephants. You may also want to take a nature walk, spot rare birds and insects and go on an elephant safari.

Private cottages have been built at the spot to facilitate more tourism. Situated at a distance of 15 KM from Madikeri, Dubare Elephant Camp is a must-visit site for children and animal lovers.

2. Nisargadhama Forest Park

Kaveri Nisargadhama or Nisargadhama Forest Park is a natural river island formed by the Kaveri river. Located at a mere distance of 3 KM from Kushalnagar, the island covers an area of 25 acres. Most of the island is covered into bamboo thickets and a thick cover of teak and sandalwood trees.

Nisargadhama is also home to peacocks, deers, monkeys and elephants. A children’s park, deer park, orchidarium and hanging bridge have been built for tourists.

Tourists on our 1 day trip can also enjoy boat riding, swimming and elephant rides. Provisions of adventure sports have also been made for children. Nisargadhama is the perfect example of how humans exist at peace with nature in Coorg!

3. Namdroling Buddhist Golden Temple

Golden Temple, also known as Buddhist Golden Temple and Namdroling Monastery is the pride of Kushalnagar. Located at a distance of 34 KM from Madikeri, this monastery is home to thousands of monks and students who specialise in Tibetan culture and Buddhist heritage.

There are schools, a hospital and a shopping complex within the monastery that were built to serve the locals. The gold plated statues of Buddhist deities mesmerise every visitor and leaves them spellbound. Tourists are also taken aback by the calming prayer rituals, colourful wall murals and the overall serenity of the monastery. Tourists are allowed to visit the monastery every day from 10 AM to 5 PM.

4. Abbey Falls

Abbey Falls is located only 10 KM away from Madikeri. Abbey Falls ranks amongst one of the top sightseeing places to see in Coorg. A spectacular sight of 70 feet tall waterfall leaves tourists spellbound. Abbey Falls is the upper stretch of Kaveri river and falls from the hills of the Western Ghats.

The waterfalls are located amidst coffee bushes and spice plantations, and tourists have to walk a short hike of 2 KM through the greenery to reach the falls. An overbridge has been built so that tourists can enjoy the views of the fall without compromising on their safety. The tea shops near Abbey Falls are also an excellent place to have a quick refreshment!

5. Omkareshwara Temple

Probably the most significant Hindu temple in Coorg, Omkareshwara Temple is a 19th-century temple built in honour of Lord Shiva. The temple was constructed by Lingaraja II in 1820 as a form of penance for wrongfully putting an innocent Brahmin to the gallows.

Apart from this significant historical anecdote, the temple also displays some rich architectural style. A mix of Hindu, Islamic and Gothic styles, the architecture of the temple reflects the secular views of the Kodavas.

The ancient temple murals, mantapa and the Shiva linga are the special attractions of the temple. Tourists also love spending time looking at the colourful fishes and the turtle in the water tank of the temple.

6. Madikeri Fort

What defines Madikeri, has to be the Madikeri Fort. A humble structure built by Mudduraja in the 17th century was built into an imposing granite structure by Tipu Sultan in the 19th century. This fort is one of the prime attractions with our 1 Day Coorg Local Sightseeing Tour with Dubare Elephant Camp.

The British took over the fort in 1834. Today the fort complex mostly houses administrative offices, a court and a closed district prison. What captures a tourist’s attention in the fort is the Maha Kote Ganesha Temple, Clock Tower, Mahatma Gandhi Public Library, Madikeri Palace and the life-size statues of the elephant greeting tourists at the entrance of the fort. Madikeri Fort is a must visit for anyone who wishes to learn about the history of Coorg.

7. Coorg Government Museum

The Old Anglican Church of the Madikeri Fort was converted into a government museum in 1971. The administration believed that a museum was important to solidify a visitor’s understanding of Kodava history. Thus an impressive collection of manuscripts, inscriptions, coins, weaponry, woodcrafts, bronze statues and jewellery was put on display here. Entry is free at the museum and everyone visiting the fort must make it a point to stop for a quick visit. The museum will surely please history buffs.

8. Gaddige / Raja’s Tomb

Gaddige or Raja’s Tomb is another top attraction in Madikeri. The tombs are built in the Islamic style of architecture, complete with domes and turrets. What’s interesting about these tombs is that it contains the remains of the Kodava royals and Lord Shiva is worshipped in these tombs.

The main tombs here belong to Lingarajendara, Dodda Veerarajendara, Mahadeviamma and Rudrappa. The bars of the windows at the tomb have fine brass engravings that are marvellous to look at. Gaddige also has a spectacular garden surrounding the tombs and several viewpoints. Gaddige is not only a site of historical importance but also a pilgrimage destination.

9. Raja’s Seat

Raja’s Seat is the last destination of your one day Coorg and Dubare Elephant Camp itinerary. Possibly the most popular destination in Coorg, Raja’s Seat goes back to the days of the royalty when the king would enjoy the view of the sunset from here.

Thick stone arches, beautiful gardens, sturdy benches and the regal oak trees add to the natural beauty of this place. Tourists crowd Raja’s Seat just when the day is about to end because nobody wants to miss out on a Kodagu sunset!

Surrounded by undulating hills, misty clouds and uninterrupted views of the green, a few minutes here will erase all your tiredness of the day! This is also an excellent place to just sit with your loved ones and enjoy their company while breathing in the fresh air and bidding goodbye to the day.

Coorg obviously has heaps to offer to everyone who visits. We hope to have convinced you to visit us at Coorg, even if just for a day. We promise to send you back refreshed with a bag full of jubilant memories and a great time!
