Why Are Taylor Swift Eras Tour Tickets So Much Cheaper in Europe?

Tickets for Swift's 51 shows overseas are 87 percent cheaper than her remaining U.S. shows, providing a model for how to keep prices low in the States.

City in Germany Temporarily Renames Itself 'Swiftkirchen' Ahead of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Stops

Trending on billboard.

That means a fan in Miami could fly to Paris for about $900 a person (according to prices generated on kayak.com), spend two nights at a four-star hotel at $250 a night and purchase a $340 concert ticket for a grand total of $1,740 — which is still $760 less than the cheapest tickets currently available for her Miami shows.

Tickets to see Swift in Stockholm (May 17-19) are even cheaper, at $312 for the cheapest tickets, while tickets for her show in Portugal (May 24-25) start at $336 and in Spain (May 29-30) start at $324. Prices do start to climb in the United Kingdom, with the get-in-the-door price hovering around £540 (about $674 USD) for Swift’s Liverpool shows (June 13-15). Prices to see Swift at Wembley Stadium (June 21-23) hover around £720 ($900).

The reason for the huge difference in price, experts say, is due in part to longstanding consumer skepticism about resale tickets in most of Europe. That’s coupled with a much more aggressive regulatory environment where artists and consumers are empowered to report and remove illegal ticket listings, and where prices are kept low thanks to laws limiting how high tickets can be marked up over face value.

Sam Shemtob , managing director for ticket resale advocacy group Face-value European Alliance for Ticketing (FEAT), points to Europe as a model for how governments can be more vigilant about regulating resale markets. In countries like France, Germany and the Netherlands, ticket resellers face limits on how much tickets can be marked up on secondary sites — typically 20% over face value. Other countries like the United Kingdom allow resale but restrict who is allowed to post tickets for resale and give artists and event promoters the right to take some resale ticket listings down.

Adopting European-style regulations in the United States by restricting ticket markups to 20% above face value would transform the concert business overnight and likely drive prices down dramatically on the secondary market. Markup caps would also likely make programs like Ticketmaster’s platinum ticket pricing (which charges high markups for a small percentage of tickets to offset the resale market) obsolete and significantly reduce the number of ticket brokers and bad actors using bots to disrupt ticket sales and illegally buy up tickets.

Shemtob notes that Europe’s ticketing rules aren’t just about protecting price, but are also designed to empower citizens to take action.

On Jan. 1, 2025, Europe’s Digital Services Act (DSA) will go into effect, creating a uniform set of guidelines for online ticket resale requiring resellers to disclose their names and contact details to potential ticket buyers. The DSA also mandates that resale platforms track takedowns of public ticket listings (to help provide a record of the deceptive activity taking place) and ban deceptive marketing practices.

While many of the DSA’s reforms mirror U.S. efforts to clean up ticketing, Shemtob says a provision in the DSA bill that makes it simple to flag, report and take down ticket listings that violate the rules is a game-changer for consumer advocates. The law creates “a clear process for removing illegal ticket listings as and when they appear,” he said in a statement provided to Billboard , putting in place “the groundwork for a fairer, more transparent ticket-buying experience for consumers.”

Besides keeping prices in Europe low, the legislation has also led to a surprising boom in tourism from U.S. fans traveling to the continent to pursue cheaper Eras Tour tickets: A spokesperson for StubHub told Billboard that 68% of ticket purchases for Swift’s 51-show run in Europe have come from U.S. buyers.

Taylor Swift is about to go back on tour: Here's what to expect on the Eras Tour in Paris

taylor swift tour tickets europe price

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website  Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

8. Lyon, France — total average cost: $1,047, safety score: 44.3

7. Lisbon, Portugal — total average cost: $1,028, safety score: 70.15

6. Munich, Germany — total average cost: $1,000, safety score: 78.88

5. Paris, France — total average cost: $971, safety score: 41.83

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

Taylor Swift fans have been able to snap up the first wave of presale tickets for the UK and European leg of Taylor Swifts Eras tour this week.

The pop megastar is bringing her Eras Tour to the UK in 2024 and had announced 13 dates and will be performing in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, and London. The Anti-Hero singer kicked off the US leg of her tour in March with a huge performance in Arizona. She has also confirmed dates across Mexico, Argentina and Brazil earlier this month.

On Monday a first wave of presale tickets for shows at Edinburgh, BT Murrayfield Stadium and London's Wembley Stadium went on sale. On Tuesday tickets for Liverpool Anfield Stadium and Wembley Stadium were listed.

And on Wednesday more tickets for Wembley are set to go on sale with presale also starting for the Cardiff, Principality Stadium concert.

Only those who participated in the Taylor Swift UK store Midnights album pre-order offer between Monday 29 August and Thursday 27 October are able to access pre-sale tickets for her UK and Ireland shows.

Ticket prices shared on social media for London Wembley indicate that both presale Left and Right Front Standing are priced at £172.25 each for the Friday, 21 June, 2024 gig. Meanwhile, a presale General Admission Standing is priced at £110.40.

Seated tickets, including side view seats and partially obstructed limited view, are proving to be considerably cheaper, and start at £58.65 and go up to £194.75 each.

For those planning on splashing out for the VIP packages, the Its Been A Long Time Coming Package comes in at a staggering £662.40 each, while Karma Is My Boyfriend is priced at £387.40 and I Remember It All Too Well Package at £332.40. The Ready for It Package is priced a £277.40, It's A Love Story package is £222.40 and We Never Go Out Of Style is £196.60.

The above is for London Wembley. For Edinburgh Left and Right Front Standing are priced at £171.25 each for the Friday, 7 June, 2024 gig. Meanwhile, a presale General Admission Standing is priced at £109.40. Seated tickets, which are staggered over a number of levels, range from £86.90 to £182.50.

Liverpool prices are: General Admission Standing £143.40, PL2 Seats £143.40, PL3 Seats Side View £109.65, and PL5 Seats £57.90.

VIP packages for Liverpool Anfield are priced at: It’s Been A Long Time Coming Package: £661.65, Karma is my Boyfriend Package: £387, I Remember It All Too Well Package: £331.65, Ready for It Package: £305.25, It's A Love Story package: £276.65 and We Never Go Out Of Style Package: £221.65.

By comparison, last month when Swift confirmed the UK leg of her showstopping tour, eagle-eyed fans believe they had figured out how much tickets could be priced at when they are available to purchase. By estimating how much tickets have sold for in the USA, and looking at similar shows here in the UK, fans came up with a map they believed would closely reflect the pricing of the show in Liverpool .

Posted on the Swifters 2.0 fan group on Facebook, the map suggested prices could start at around £49 for 'side view' seats towards the back of the stage. Some side view seats were also expected to be on sale for around the £75 mark. It was thought better seats in the house could be going for anywhere between £95 - £160, while those looking to stand they estimated would be £95 a ticket.

From 1pm, fans can try for the June 8 Edinburgh date and the August 15 London date, and from 3pm presale tickets go live for June 9 in Edinburgh.

When do the UK pre-sale tickets go on sale?

The rest of the UK presales go live as follows...

North American Swifties are traveling internationally for their best chance at seeing Taylor Swift’s 2024 “Eras Tour” as the singer makes her way through Europe.

Swift kicked off the European leg of her tour — after a two-month break and a new album release — on May 9 in Paris, France. The singer performed for four nights at the Paris La Défense Arena and continued her tour through Sweden, Portugal and Spain.

Fans have noticed Swift’s European dates have been significantly cheaper than her North American concerts. With instances of ticket prices dropping below triple digits, a trip across the pond may very well be worth the extra travel expenses.

Swift still has 42 concerts left on her European leg before she heads back to North America, where prices remain in the thousands.

Where to get tickets to Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’:

At the time of publishing, the cheapest concert date is Lyon, France (6/3/24), starting at $76 on Vivid Seats .

It’s important to note ticket prices fluctuate frequently in the resale market and vary by city and seating location. Tickets are available for purchase through platforms like Vivid Seats , StubHub or TicketNetwork .

Taylor Swift soaks it all in while performing in concert.

The Tortured Poet is headed to the Venice of the North.

From July 4-6, Taylor Swift will bring her ongoing, international ‘Eras Tour’ to Amsterdam, NIL’s Johan Cruijff Arena.

She’ll be joined by special guest Paramore at all three gigs.

And, if you’ve held out until the last minute to buy tickets, you’re in luck.

When our team last reported on ‘Eras Tour’ ticket prices back in April, the lowest price we could find on tickets for her Amsterdam shows was a whopping $776 USD before fees on Vivid Seats.

Now, a little over two months later, prices start at $275 before fees at the time of publication.

Yes, that’s over $500 (!) in savings.

Sometimes “all of this silence and patience, pining in anticipation” as Tay Tay sings in “Dress,” really does pay off.

Want to see Swift do her thing live on Ajax’s home turf?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Taylor Swift’s three Amsterdam ‘Eras Tour’ concerts below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Taylor Swift ‘Eras Tour’ news

Our team has been following the ‘Eras Tour’ closely over the past year.

Over the past few months, we spoke to a Swiftie who  shared some helpful tips  about seeing Taylor live, reported on  dropping ticket prices , and  came up with a list of all the most exciting fan trends .

Taylor Swift new music

Swift’s  “The Tortured Poets Department”  was released at midnight (and subsequently at 2 a.m.) on Friday, April 19.

While every listener will likely come away with their own favorites, we particularly enjoyed the sleek, synthy “Fortnight,” icy “So Long, London,” anthemic “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a bombastic slow build of “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and gorgeously arranged “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus.”

If you want to give it a spin — if you’re one of the few people on the planet that hasn’t already, that is — you can find “The Tortured Poets Department”  here .

The Hayley Williams-fronted pop-punk rockers are opening for Swift from May through August this year. This may come as a bit of a surprise to some fans considering that the group mounted a successful arena tour of their own in 2023.

That tour came on the heels of Paramore’s 2022 reunion; Prior to that, the band had been on a five-year hiatus.

For fans who want to check out their latest, their 2023 album “This Is Why” can be heard  here .

Huge stars on tour in 2024

Although it will cost an arm and a leg (sometimes more!) to see Swift live this year, there are much more affordable — likely stateside — concerts you can attend this year.

Here are just five of our favorite artists you won’t want to miss live.

•  Olivia Rodrigo

•  Kacey Musgraves

•  Pink

•  Gracie Abrams

•  Billie Eilish

The juggernaut that is Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour just keeps going. Starting May 9, the billionaire singer will play 50 shows across Europe before heading back to North America for dates in Canada. The tour, which took America — and our wallets — by storm last summer, will be held in some of Europe’s biggest concert venues. And, as was the case last summer, tickets are super hard to come by.

The folks over at Going analyzed which cities were the cheapest to get to, to travel within, and have the lowest-priced tickets available (Lyon and Dublin notwithstanding). Of course, prices fluctuate and things change, but here are the the cheapest cities for Eras Tour tickets in Europe (as of mid-March).

For some, forking over four digits for a concert is just too much, but for others, the experience is worth the money.

Gabrielle Lask isn’t normally a big spender, but when she had an opportunity to purchase two tickets to Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour for $4,000, the Swiftie just couldn’t “shake off” the chance to see the singer with her mom.

“It’s so much money,” Lask says. “I honestly don’t think I’ve ever spent that much money on anything in my life, but I was dying to go to that show. My mom surprised me with tickets for my 11th birthday for the Fearless tour, and this would be a full-circle moment for us to go back together.”

How Lask Covered the Cost

Lask, 24, and her mother first tried purchasing tickets through the presale program for Capital One cardholders , which reportedly offered ticket prices as low as $49.

When that didn’t work out, Lask says they tried several avenues to get tickets before connecting with a ticket broker who could get them the unobstructed, 300-level tickets for $2,000 each.

To cover the cost, Lask says she took $3,000 out of her savings account to pay for the tickets. Her mom paid the other $1,000 and paid for Lask’s flight from Florida to St. Louis, where they met and drove to Chicago together for the concert. Her mother also paid for the hotel room after the concert.

Resale Ticket Prices Have Gone Through the Ceiling

Lask wasn’t the only fan spending thousands on tickets to The Eras Tour – resale ticket prices have skyrocketed, even as the singer has continued to add more tour dates. Earlier this month, Swift unveiled a schedule for previously unannounced North American shows running through November in Miami, New Orleans, Indiana and Canada. After that, she'll take the show abroad.

The average resale ticket sold for the concert at the time of publications is $1,619, according to SeatGeek. By comparison, the average resale concert ticket this year is about $245.

“What makes (Swift’s ticket sales) even more impressive is that she is drawing this level of demand while playing at the largest venues in the country,” says Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek. “Taylor nearly broke the internet during her Eras Tour tickets sales, and the demand has not subsided.”

Fans Went Way Over Budget

Even fans who managed to get their tickets during the presale at lower prices often spent more than they expected.

Swift may have competition when it comes to fans spending on concert tickets, however. A recent InvestorsObserver survey found that fans of Beyonce were laying out an average of $1,800 each to see Queen Bey perform, about $300 more than the average spend by Swifties.

For some, however, forking over four digits for a concert is just too much. More than 70% of consumers recently told LendingTree that they've opted out of seeing their favorite performers because prices were too high.

But for Lask, who has seen Swift in concert four times, the experience was worth the money.

“She is my favorite artist, and she has released so much new music since her last tour, I couldn’t miss it,” Lask says. “It was so amazing, I cried multiple times. It was surreal being there after the battle and uncertainty of getting tickets. I just couldn’t believe I was there.”

There is one European country where Taylor Swift didn't change the economy so far

  • Taylor Swift's Eras Tour boosted hotel prices in Portugal, Spain, and Sweden but not France.
  • France's larger population and hotel capacity diluted the economic impact of Swift's concerts, analysts said.
  • Upcoming shows in smaller European countries may see higher accommodation prices and inflation.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has made it to five European countries so far. The sold-out shows have boosted accommodation prices everywhere except one country: France.

Among the four countries Swift toured in May , three saw an increase in month-on-month hotel prices this year compared to the last three years, according to a Monday report from BMI, an analytics subsidiary of Fitch Solutions.

Portugal, Spain, and Sweden's hotel prices in May increased several times' their 2021-2023 average. But France saw a drop in accommodation inflation. The researchers did not analyze this month's shows in the UK .

Researchers at BMI attributed the difference to France's larger population and greater hotel capacity compared with the other tour stops, which may dilute the impact of the American pop star's concerts.

The 290,000 people who attended the six shows split between Paris and Lyon only make up 0.43% of the French population.

Related stories

"France regularly hosts large events and has a very well-developed tourism industry and airports, suggesting strong capacity to host large numbers of domestic and international arrivals," the researchers wrote in the note. The country is weeks away from the summer Olympics kickoff.

But upcoming Swift shows in the Netherlands, Ireland, Austria, and Switzerland all have the potential to boost prices, given that those countries' populations are all under 20 million, the report noted. Swift's current tour takes her to 51 shows across 18 European cities.

The Eras tour has had a massive economic impact on other countries. The concerts rally tens of thousands of fans who spend big on restaurants, lodging, and visiting local attractions . Some Swifties will travel hours — and across countries — to attend a concert.

In the US, where the singer performed 53 shows, about 600 concertgoers surveyed by QuestionPro said they spent $1,300, on average. Swift has been mentioned on companies' earnings calls to explain demand upticks and by the Philadelphia Federal Reserve, which highlighted post-pandemic record hotel demand from her stop.

MBI analysts looking at US data found that concertgoers can spend four times the gross costs of tickets, affecting inflation in local economies. In Chicago, Eras tour dates led to 96.8% hotel room occupancy, an all-time high for the city, per the BMI report.

The fanfare is alive across the world. Swift doesn't perform in Italy until mid-July, but hotels in Milan are already booked and busy.

"Our analysis and data shows that hotel prices in Milan are on average 45% higher for the nights of Taylor Swift's shows in the city in July 2024, compared to the weeks before and after the show," Ben Julius, the founder of a tourism company called Tourist Italy, told Business Insider.

Earlier this year, Singapore's government incentives of nearly $3 million per show to get Swift to perform in the city-state sparked controversy and led to inter-regional political debate.

The Taylor Swift Economy Has Overtaken London. I Went to Its Epicenter.

I’ve never seen anything quite like what the superstar is doing to my city..

Taylor Swift is in London. Even the least culturally clued-in person could not have failed to notice. The city is full of people in “Eras” merch, and social media is awash in concert footage from the tour dates at Wembley Stadium: Travis Kelce donning a top hat and tails to make his own onstage debut, Prince William celebrating his 42 nd birthday by shaking it off in his private box. We’ve got an election going on here at the moment, so candidates are busy doing things in public to appear maximally normal. Keir Starmer, leader of the opposition, posted a photo of himself on what he described as a “Swift campaign pitstop” at the “Eras” tour on Friday. Mayor Sadiq Khan posted a version of London’s underground map with all the stops replaced by Taylor Swift song titles and captioned it “London (Taylor’s Version).” For better or worse, this has indeed felt like her town, for a weekend.

But one specific place in London is an interesting Petri dish in which to examine the Taylor Swift effect. Before April of this year, the Black Dog pub, in south London’s Vauxhall neighborhood, was an unremarkable sort of place. I live nearby and had been once or twice before. It’s a local joint that does decent food and serves beer—just a pub, in other words. However, after Swift released The Tortured Poets Department , the establishment found itself catapulted to international recognition. The extended, Anthology edition of the album features a song called “The Black Dog,” in which Swift as narrator describes realizing that a lover—presumably one of the two Londoner boyfriends that most of the album is about—had forgotten to turn off location sharing, and she then works out that he is cheating on her by tracking him to a bar by that name.

I went down this past weekend to see whether there would be any Swifties at the pub before or after their “Eras” experience and, if so, to ask them to explain themselves. As I walked over there, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, I sort of expected to be disappointed. Why would people in London for a weekend, some of them from as far afield as the States, spend any of their precious time at a bog-standard pub in a part of town well off the tourist trail? Surely they had better places to be? This was just a bonus track, after all.

I need not have worried. The Black Dog was swarming with groups of friends with “Eras” tote bags; mums and their tweenage daughters in “Eras” T-shirts; beleaguered boyfriends taking photographs of their girlfriends, all their arms bedecked in lettered bands spelling out their favorite albums and songs and lyrics. On the grass outside the pub, there were even a handful of girls stringing together more of these friendship bracelets. Inside, it was even busier, and anyone hoping for a table without a reservation was kidding themselves.

The pub sells merchandise now: pink Black Dog baseball caps, pint glasses embossed with the establishment’s logo, and, of course, friendship bracelets. Taylor Swift plays over the speakers. According to one staff member wearing a Black Dog friendship bracelet, it has been busy not just all weekend but all month. Swift fans seeing the tour elsewhere on the Continent have been incorporating the concert into a wider holiday, stopping in London on their own European tour. There was a somewhat harassed-looking security guard in an orange cap outside yelling at the Swifties to stay out of the way of cars as they got their pictures taken with a sign with the lyric “And so I watch as you walk into some bar called the Black Dog.” The guard was himself wearing a full sleeve of letter beads that fans had given to him, including one wristlet that read “Go Chiefs,” a phrase that holds no meaning for most Londoners. As I stood there, three South African women in “Eras” merch were debating which of theirs to bestow upon him. “Give him ‘King of My Heart,’ ” one said. “It will match his hat.”

I spoke to Michelle and Tammi, sisters based in Tennessee and Florida, who were there with their daughters. They were in London to see Swift the following night, and would be around till Tuesday. Maya, one of the daughters, said that “The Black Dog” was her favourite song of all, so this was the one thing she wanted to do in the city other than see the concert. They were going to the stadium that night too, to listen from outside.

This kind of tourism feels like a relatively new thing, in Europe anyway. It happened with Beyoncé’s tour as well: droves of concertgoers traveling to European cities they were otherwise not very interested in, such as the people who flew out specifically for the Stockholm show that kicked off the “Renaissance” tour. But this feels like another level in terms of numbers. This summer, 700,000 are expected to attend the “Eras” tour over the eight dates it will be in London, this month and again in August. A huge portion of that audience will be coming from abroad. Tickets to the European leg of the “Eras” tour are significantly cheaper than they are in the U.S., to the extent that many did the maths and worked out that it would be a better value to get “Eras” tickets in Europe and fly over for the concert. The Greater London Authority estimates that the tour will generate 300 million pounds for the economy, and last week the European Central Bank’s chief economist was heard musing about the megastar’s potential effect on inflation. Swift-themed functions this past weekend included a Taylor Swift drag brunch; a Taylor Swift mini-golf and cocktail event; a Taylor Swift traveling bar bus tour of London; and an adult ball pit experience with Taylor Swift music playing, as well as both warmup parties and after-parties for each concert. I cannot recall another occasion when one person’s presence in a city has kicked off such an enormous response of ancillary events and cash-in attempts. It is no exaggeration when everyone from CNBC to the New York Times writes about her as not just a pop star but an entire economy.

Three women from Ottawa told me that they had thought about coming to the Black Dog during their weekend in London but had bumped it up the agenda to that day because Swift had sung “The Black Dog” the previous night, as one of the two surprise songs she performs at each tour date. I sat down on a bench outside the pub with a group of fans, some from the U.S. and some from London, who had met one another there that day. They had all seen the show the night before. “ Tortured Poets is my favorite album,” a woman in her early 20s named Lily told me, “and we were like, ‘We have to visit the Black Dog.’ Just seeing that this is where she wrote about—it’s crazy. I almost imagine, like, this is the vibe of Tortured Poets , you know what I mean? It’s like the album in real life.”

Two other Swifties, Rachel and Ashley, found out they had gotten off the waitlist for London tickets on Thursday at 11 a.m. in New York. “We bought the tickets and flew here that night. We were in the airport by 4,” Rachel said. They got married last month. “Now we’re like, I don’t know—we thought we had the best night of our life? And then last night happened.” They wanted to come and see the Black Dog because they found the song relatable. “She was stalking her boyfriend, and, like, that’s the most human thing. I’m always looking at my Find My Friends like, Where’s everybody at, what are they doing? ”

Another group, friends from London, sat on the lawn with their pints. “I suggested the Black Dog to these two,” said Zoe, pointing to the other women with her, “and they were like, ‘We don’t know what you’re talking about.’ I was like, ‘It’s where Taylor got cheated on. It’s very important to us!’ ” She wasn’t at all surprised it was busy. “I thought it would be busier, to be honest.”

I guess for all these fans, coming to the Black Dog is a way to (let’s be real) get some Instagram pictures—but also to feel just a tiny bit closer to Swift. And her stardom is so astronomical that such feelings can be elicited just by a beer drunk from a plastic cup on some grass outside an unremarkable boozer.

When the “Eras” tour comes to a city, it creates this strange sense of us—the regular locals—and them, the world’s Swifties. As I stood outside the Black Dog, a group walked past.

“It’s crazy that there are so many people, and they’ve got so many bags,” one of the girls said to the others. One of her friends replied: “Imagine being the owner of this pub. They probably hate it.”

They don’t, apparently. Back when the song was released and the pub first started getting Swiftie visitors, the pub’s events manager, Lily Bottomley, told the BBC that the attention had been “pretty overwhelming” but that the bar “ can’t be happier ,” by which she presumably at least in part meant: “We are making a lot of money.”

People eating on the terrace outside an adjacent café were craning their necks to see what the fuss was about. One customer got up and walked over to an American woman wearing friendship bracelets.

“What’s all this?” the customer said in a south London accent.

“Oh, it’s because of the Taylor Swift song,” the American woman replied.

“All right,” the Londoner said before returning to the café, looking over her shoulder periodically with a bemused expression on her face.

The chief of Europe’s central bank is tired of people blaming Taylor Swift for the eurozone’s sticky inflation

Taylor Swift is joined on stage by Travis Kelce (R), during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Wembley Stadium on June 23, 2024 in London, England.

Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has been a revelation across Europe. Everyone from the royal family to Paul McCartney danced to her three and a half hour shows as economists fell over themselves to hail the “Taylor Effect” on the region’s economy.

However, the head of the eurozone’s central bank seems to think people who argue that she has also become an economic force could benefit from a couple of lessons in macroeconomics.

Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank (ECB), has laughed off suggestions that Taylor Swift is to blame for stubborn inflation in the region.

The latest reading showed eurozone inflation fell to 2.5% in June, closer to its target of 2%. However, services inflation, which Swift’s presence would contribute to, has remained elevated, preventing the bank from a second interest rate cut after slashing its base rate in June.

Because Swift’s time in Europe is temporary, her perceived contribution to inflation wouldn’t be “sticky.” That caused an exasperated Lagarde to dismiss the idea that she was a meaningful contributor to the continent’s stubborn price rises.

“It’s not just Taylor Swift, you know,” Lagarde told CNBC at the ECB Forum. “Others have come as well.”

Instead, Lagarde said, higher wages for service employees and rising business profits needed were the key metrics to consider before the ECB could cut rates again.

Sweden’s central bank name-checked the Taylor Swift effect as it disclosed an increase in inflation in the same month the singer performed in the country.

The Riksbank said hotel prices rose 11% in May, fueled by “ gig-trippers ” following Swift across the continent. That was a bigger increase than when Beyoncé performed a year earlier.

However, while Swift’s presence might have contributed to some price increases, it makes up a small part of the wider inflation pie.

The Taylor Effect?

The “Taylor Effect” has been documented in every region where she has taken her bumper Eras tour this year. It’s even helped her football player boyfriend Travis Kelce cash in, saying he now commands more lucrative sponsors for his New Heights podcast with brother Jason since his romance with Swift went public.

Several banks and think tanks have run economic analysis pieces that put her economic impact into the billions. The impact in Europe is expected to be bigger than in the U.S., as Americans took advantage of a strong dollar and EU regulations on ticket resale prices to get a better deal.

One report by Barclaycard suggested Taylor Swift’s U.K. legs would deliver a £1 billion ($1.3 billion) injection to the country’s economy.

The Financial Times Alphaville investigated the report and found eyebrow-raising figures behind the calculation, including an average travel spend of £110.80 to get to her gigs and £60 on a meal beforehand.

The survey was also based on a small sample size of 200 people who either had tickets or were “looking to secure” tickets to one of Swift’s concerts. Barclaycard also informed Alphaville that the figures were an average of the responses, with the more reliable median expected to be lower.

Swift is undoubtedly a generational tour de force, but analysts should look elsewhere before blaming her for European inflation’s cruel summer.

Why Thousands of Fans Are Worried They're at Risk of Missing Taylor Swift's Dublin Eras Tour

T he  Eras Tour has been  taking over Europe for the past few weeks, but ahead of the three-night show in Dublin, Ireland, some fans fear they might not make it despite already securing tickets.

Fans gearing up to attend Taylor Swift’s highly-anticipated tour at the Aviva Stadium—which kicks off on June 28 and runs through June 30—are facing a travel hiccup due to Aer Lingus’ air strike.

In the days leading up to the shows, fans have reached out to the airline with questions and concerns.

“Hey @AerLingus - if our family can’t get to @taylorswift13 in Dublin next weekend the pilots will be the least of your problems. You do not want a teenage girl as an enemy. They are the scariest people on earth. And I’ll be having her reach out to you directly,” one concerned mother, named Cara Portnoy ,  tweeted at the Irish-based airline .

“We are in the same boat. This is awful,” another user responded in the thread.

Portnoy told the  Irish Independent that she and her husband, along with their three children and some additional family members, were all flying in for the concert, spending around $500 per ticket.

“We have spent almost $10,000 for a family holiday before even setting foot in Ireland, and that’s not counting costs like pet sitters, car rental reservations, etc. That is all now in jeopardy,” she explained, adding that while she doesn’t “blame the pilots for wanting a fair wage,” she’s upset with the “entire situation and Aer Lingus’ way of dealing with it.”

“There is absolutely no way to speak to a human being without waiting on hold for hours, with virtual assistants spewing the same scripted responses,” she added, noting that it’s unclear if they’ll be able to make the flight overseas at all to see the pop star.

Another mom  shared similar concerns on X, looping in the star herself in hopes of gaining more visibility: “ @taylorswift13 thousands of your fans flying into Dublin may not make it to your concert due to an @AerLingus work stoppage. We tried to get tix to every major American city concert last year and could not. Dublin was the only show my daughters and I could get tix for.”

“Okay so @AerLingus is striking and my return flight from Dublin has been cancelled. So now idk if I’m gonna be able to make it to #TSTheErasTour this weekend. I know there’s bigger problems going on in the world rn but I’m so sad, I’ve been looking forward to this for a year,”  another heartbroken and worried Swiftie wrote.

Tweets continued to pour in, with many calling on Taylor Nation for visibility and to put pressure on the airline to provide a solution for those being inconvenienced.

On June 21, Aer Lingus took to their Instagram page to announce that the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association would be striking on June 29 from 6am to 1pm, in addition to “the existing work to rule action from 26 June,” highlighting that it would “cause major disruption to our customers” with the possibility of flight cancellations.

The contact centers are said to be experiencing a large volume of calls, however, those traveling between the 26th and July 2 can change their booking to a later date for free or cancel the flight altogether and apply for a refund/refund voucher, which, unfortunately, doesn’t help for those who booked travel specifically for the concert.

“This is nonsense! Pay your pilots! Look at what this is causing, Taylor Swift performing next weekend, you are crushing the money that will be made in tourism this weekend! And crushing the spirit of some Americans who are coming over for the show,” one comment read under the post, as another angrily echoed, “Unbelievable!! It's easy to think you did it on purpose since it's Taylor Swift's concert weekend. People spent SO MUCH MONEY one year in advance to get tickets. @taylornation .”

“Flying home from New York for Taylor Swift concert and you have cancelled my flight and moved me to a flight after the concert. All that money spent on tickets and hotels. Truly awful way to treat customers,” a third traveler noted.

Per the  Irish Mirror , Swift’s arrival in the capital city is expected to add €150 million (or roughly $160 million) to the economy, with an influx of 150,000 fans from Ireland and abroad, as many American fans have been flocking to various European cities due to cheaper ticket prices. Per Billboard , some tickets are estimated to be roughly 87% cheaper than the average price in the United States.

Neither Swift, nor her team, have issued any kind of statement about the situation, but in the words of Justin Timberlake —and thousands of uncertain fans—"this is going to ruin the tour."
